* The end of the film: [[spoiler: Laura finds her son from the basement...but he is dead, reduced to a corpse after being trapped there for weeks. In her grief Laura [[DrivenToSuicide overdoses with her son's HIV medicines]] and is reunited with Simón in death, where she becomes a matron for the orphan ghosts]], who say, "She's grown older, just like Wendy!" (Reference to Literature/PeterPan which was their bedtime story)
** It is also hinted that [[spoiler:he died the very first night by falling from the stairs. Evidence of this is the broken handle and the flashback that Laura had about listening to noises through a wall; immediately after the memories fade away we see the broken stairway railing and Simon lying on the floor, his neck at an unnatural angle. Which makes everything a lot sadder and creepier.]] In either case, it was [[spoiler: basically HER fault that Simon died.]]
* The final scene deserves to be mentioned: After [[spoiler:Laura's death, Carlos returns to the orphanage. He looks around the room where Laura died, still devastated that she's gone, along with ''his adopted son''. Then he finds the medallion he had given her to protect herself with halfway through the film. He then hears the doors and looks up to see them sway open... and ''[[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments he smiles]]'']].
** Just think for a second, Carlos was basically the ghost-proof parent, not believing Laura that the orphanage was haunted, but still being supportive of her. Just ''that ending'' [[spoiler:shows that he may now believe that his wife and adoptive son are probably there]].
** The group therapy session for parents grieving over their dead or missing children. One mother, in particular, claims to have found peace with her daughter’s death after perceiving the child’s content ghost in her bedroom. This is not too different from [[spoiler: the ending when Carlos witnesses paranormal activity after finding the original necklace he allowed his wife to borrow on the floor. The experience allows him to find peace with his wife and adopted son’s deaths]].
* The fact that the last interaction Laura has with Simón before [[spoiler: his death]] is her slapping him after he hysterically refused to follow her downstairs to the party.
* Thomás’s entire story is this: [[spoiler: he has a severely scarred face that motivated his mentally unstable mother to seclude him from the other children; he clearly displays some artistic talent that only goes to waste as a result of his isolation; he is somewhat bullied by the other kids for hiding his disfigured face behind a rather creepy mask when outside his secret room; and the bullying (intentional by the orphans or not) and enforced self-isolation reach the worst possible outcome after his peers trick him into entering a cave during low tide and removing his mask without his consent. Now self-conscious in how others perceive him (no thanks to his emotionally abusive mother), Thomás refuses to exit the cave over the risk of revealing his face to the other kids, leading him to drown after the tide eventually came up. Tragically, even after his own death, Thomás’s ghost had to unfortunately watch the slow deaths of his peers after his mother avenged his death by poisoning them. Moreover, it is arguably partially his fault that Simón died after convincing Simón to go down to his room, which would lead Simón being locked in said room by Laura and eventually dying, too]].
