* Even ''Outbreak'', a side title, manages to be depressing. Eight people fighting desperately to survive, seeing familiar friends, co-workers, and family all shambling undead. Cindy sees her co-worker eaten alive, Jim may be forced to kill some of his own co workers, Kevin witnessing the fall of the RPD... even Bob, Mark's friend.
* The antisocial plumber David. Through the entire game he seemed enraged at the entire situation and most determined to survive. Then consider that his fighting could all have been in vain... "I'm supposed to feel awful, but I felt like laughing. Why? Well it really doesn't matter now...does it?"
** David is also the only one of the playable characters to have a CatapultNightmare about getting eaten by zombies following the events of the game, so he may have actually been more affected than the others, since none of them are shown to have nightmares about it.
* Pretty much all the endings that aren't [[GoldenEnding Remain Hopeful]] are this to some extent. But, from the top:
** The [[BittersweetEnding Regretful Endings]] are these by default. All of them have the survivors [[HeroicBSOD deeply shaken by their experiences]] and their failure to retrieve additional samples of [[MagicAntidote Daylight]], with some even suffering an implied {{Despair Event Horizon}}:
---> '''[[IntrepidReporter Alyssa]]''': "Innocent curiosity can bring self-destruction. [[BrokenBird My only hope is to forget]]. The darkness... is too much for me."
---> '''[[{{Keet}} Kevin]]''': "I should congratulate myself for making it out alive... but I don't feel like doing that. I've lost too much. And any trace of what once was has been obliterated. I succumb to weakness and regret."
---> '''[[TheHero George]]''': "Light falls upon us at long last. Much has been sacrificed to reveal the truth, and [[AllForNothing now there's no one left to hear the answer]]. It will be sealed and buried in the depths of man's memory. In time, this too will be forgotten. [[HumansAreFlawed Such is the legacy of mankind.]]"
---> '''[[ShellShockedVeteran Mark]]''': "[[NukeEm The sun is rising]]. The [[ZombieApocalypse nightmare which will likely cover the Earth]] is gone in a flash. Yet, the worst enemy is neither zombie, nor virus. [[HumansAreBastards It's man's total lack of conscience, or remorse]]."
** The [[AndThenJohnWasAZombie Chopper Zombie endings]]. [[HopeSpot You came]] ''[[HopeSpot so close]]'' [[HopeSpot to escaping Raccoon City]], only for [[ZombieInfectee the virus dwelling within the survivor you play as]] to [[YankTheDogsChain turn them into a zombie as the chopper crosses city limits]], complete with the character outright crossing the {{Despair Event Horizon}} in a brief but solemn inner monologue moments before they turn and implicitly infect/kill their rescuers.
** Two of online bad endings are definitely this, with the other two crossing over with {{Dying Moment Of Awesome}}. Whether it's [[ShipTease George and Cindy]] [[FinalFirstHug embracing one another]] as the missiles scream down toward Raccoon City, or [[PluckyGirl Yoko]] and [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Alyssa]] sharing a [[GoOutWithASmile laugh and a final contribution against Umbrella before the city burns]] [[note]]Hell, even the ''soundtrack'' recognise these ones as tearjerkers! They're the only endings in which a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYFXPOgs4d8&list=PL2C6A07AC53D8CA39&index=25 different, more solemn track]] is played rather than the usual [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-f2ofXcrgQ&list=PL2C6A07AC53D8CA39&index=27 orchestral ending track]][[/note]], it's hard not to be left feeling at least a little sad afterwards.
