!! Items
* The Zapinator, a debugging weapon on PC and a 3DS-version exclusive, is quite blatantly the orange [[UsefulNotes/NintendoEntertainmentSystem NES Zapper]] that is famously used for Duck Hunt. It was DummiedOut for a time on the PC version, until it was re-introduced in 1.4 as an obtainable weapon, alongside the initial-release gray version found pre-Hardmode.
* The Ancient Cobalt Armor (the original 1.0 Cobalt Armor) and the current 1.1 Cobalt Armor bears a resemblance to VideoGame/MegaMan's armor.
* Related to above, 1.3 added the Charged Blaster Cannon which, just like Mega Man's, can be used to fire quick shots or charged up for a stronger attack.
* The Phaseblade, a mid-tier sword, and its higher-tier upgrade the Phasesaber, are ''very'' reminiscent of [[Franchise/StarWars lightsabers]].
* The 1.0.5 update introduced Vanity slots, allowing players to wear decorative outfits over their armor. The items included with its introduction includes...
** A [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros plumber's outfit]]. The old-generation consoles got a color-flipped one based on ''VideoGame/MarioBros''.
** An [[Franchise/IndianaJones archaeologist's]] set.
** A [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda hero's outfit]] in green and purple. 1.2.1 added a Princess Dress and Tiara to go along with it.
** A certain [[VideoGame/CaveStory Robot Hat]], exactly as Quote wore it. The fact that the piranhas and anglers drop the Robot Hat may be a reference to Ironhead, which in itself is a reference to one of Pixel's previous works, ''VideoGame/SwimIkachan''
** A certain pirate's [[Manga/OnePiece straw hat]].
** A [[VideoGame/NinjaGaiden Ninja outfit]].
** A [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI clown costume]].
** and [[Series/DoctorWho The Doctor's clothes]].
* Speaking of Quote, the Xenopopper ranged weapon from the Martian Madness event behaves almost exactly like the Bubbler gun at level 3.
* 1.2.1 added a [[Film/VForVendetta Guy Fawkes Mask]].
* The Pirate Captain sells a rather interesting set of [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIVBlackFlag pirate clothes]].
* Depending on the fan you're talking to, the Bunny Hood is either [[Film/DonnieDarko Frank's mask]] or Link's.
* The description of the Grappling Hook says "[[Franchise/MortalKombat Get over here!]]"
* The Breaker Blade looks [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII identical to Clouds's Buster sword, complete with Materia embedded in the handle.]] It's even more hilariously huge than Cloud's one too.
* The True Excalibur, introduced in the Big 1.2 Update, shoots sword beams when swung, rather like [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight another incarnation]] of the legendary sword.
* The four weapons used to create the Night's Edge (Muramasa, Light's Bane, Fiery Greatsword, and Blade of Grass) are blue, purple, red, and green respectively. [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwords Just like the tunics of a certain split-up hero.]]
** One of these, the Light's Bane, also serves as a reference to the [[BlackMetal Melodic Black Metal]] band {{Music/Dissection}} and their album ''Storm of the Light's Bane''.
* The Flower of Fire allows the players to shoot bouncing fireballs like [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros a certain famous plumber]]. Ditto for the Flower of Frost.
* Sniff around in the Jungle, and you might find [[Film/ArmyOfDarkness MY BOOMSTICK!!!]]
* One of the newest and best grappling hooks in the game is the Web Slinger. [[ComicBook/SpiderMan It lets you shoot lines of sticky web out of your hand.]]
* 1.2 provides us with a [[Webcomic/TheLegendOfMaxx Hammush.]]
* The Heat Ray's description simply reads "[[Music/JeffWaynesMusicalVersionOfTheWarOfTheWorlds Oolaa!]]"
* The paladins in the hardmode dungeon constantly throw ethereal hammers at you and you can use it as well if it drops it. This may be a reference to ''VideoGame/DiabloII'' where one of the skills a paladin can learn is the Blessed Hammer that summons similar, spinning hammers. Combined with the Concentration offensive aura, this spawned a popular character build known as the hammerdin.
* The Stardust wings bear resemblance to the wings of various [[{{VideoGame/Diablo}} Archangels]].
* One of the weapons that can be dropped in the Dungeon in Hard Mode is a [[Franchise/KingdomHearts Keyblade]]- Ahem, sorry Key''brand''. It's baically the Kingdom Key without the chain.
* The [[LeetSpeak Pwnhammer]] is a reference to Redigit's previous game, ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBrosX'' in which the Pwnhammer was a series of levels based on ''VideoGame/SuperMetroid''.
* The Magnet Sphere fires a large ball of energy that travels slowly forward, zapping any nearby enemies with energy rays, in a manner reminiscent of ''VideoGame/QuakeII'''s BFG, sans the explosion when the orb hits a wall. It could also reference the Shocking Orbs skill used by the [[VideoGame/TorchlightII Embermage]] in which they cast a large ball of electricity that slowly travels along, zapping nearby enemies.
* If you open the Crimson Chest in the Dungeon, you get Vampire Knives. They're a reference to two famous knife-throwing vampires: [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure Dio Brando]] and [[Franchise/TouhouProject Sakuya Izayoi]] (well, she's a maid of one), who is herself a ''[=JoJo=]'' reference. The pattern of the thrown knives [[ShownTheirWork even matches the pattern in which Sakuya throws them]]!
* Terrarian homes can now be constructed of [[Film/AnchormanTheLegendOfRonBurgundy Rich Mahogany]].
* Of the many in-game paintings that can be placed, one called "Jacking Skeletron" resembles a scene from "WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas". The painting's title is also a play on Jack Skellington, the protagonist of said movie.
** Another {{painting|s}} is similar looking to the famous Creator/EdvardMunch painting Art/{{The Scream|Munch}}.
** Another painting found is a portrait of the Mechanic and Goblin Tinkerer called [[AmericanGothicCouple Terrarian Gothic]].
** Yet another painting that can be found in the Dungeon is basically just a tiny pixellated rendition of Creator/VincentVanGogh's ''Art/TheStarryNight''.
** One of the paintings sold by the Princess is the [[https://terraria.gamepedia.com/Paintings#From_Princess Dark Side of the Hallow]], which references Music/PinkFloyd.
** The Angler can reward a Duke Fishron-themed parody of the ''Film/{{Jaws}}'' poster or the boat picture seen over WesternAnimation/{{the Simpsons}}' couch. The latter is titled "CouchGag."
* The game introduced two new weapons with the Halloween Update. The [[Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet Bladed Glove]] and the [[Franchise/FridayThe13th Bloody Machete]].
* The costumes in the Halloween Update include:
** [[Franchise/{{Alien}} An Alien costume]].
** [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles A 'Karate Tortoise' costume]].
** [[VideoGame/{{Uncharted}} A Treasure]] [[Franchise/TombRaider Hunter costume]].
** [[WesternAnimation/ItsTheGreatPumpkinCharlieBrown A "Sheet with Eyeholes" Ghost costume]].
** [[Franchise/StarFox A Brown Fox costume and a Gray Wolf costume]].
* One of the daily fish the Angler will send you to catch is a Clownfish. He says that it was [[WesternAnimation/FindingNemo frantically looking for a lost relative]].
** The Angler claims to have heard of the Dirt Fish from a [[Series/CrocodileHunter "funny-talking zombie"]] who said the fish could "suffocate ten blokes his size". Making this shout-out even darker is the fact that the Dirt Fish is similar to a Stingray, the species of fish that killed Irwin.
* 1.2.4 seems to be an update themed around ''VideoGame/PixelPiracy'' from weapons like the Falcon Blade from crates and more pirate themed items up to and including the pirate staff that summons tiny pirates to fight for you... which crap on the floor like the game they reference...
** 1.3 made it that even the Pirate NPC will crap on the floor as well.
* Re-Logic/505 Games seems to like ''{{VideoGame/Worms}}'' as the land mine bought from the Demolitionist after defeating Plantera have a similar look to the mines from ''Worms 2'' and onward with its green camo and BigRedButton on top.
** In the mobile and 3DS version, players can craft the [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail Holy Hand Grenade]] which, predictably, produces a massive explosion and damage to go with it.
** Also in the mobile and 3DS version, players can find the suspicious looking apple which summons a pet worm that follows you. It even utters random context sensitive quotes straight from the games. Dying with the pet following you even causes the InstantGravestone to be a stone worm. Another pet, bought from the Clothier, is the Old Woman which, thankfully, doesn't explode.
* As of version 1.3, one of the endgame armors you can craft is the Stardust Armor. Wearing the full set allows you to summon a guardian that has more than a passing resemblance to [[Manga/JojosBizarreAdventure Jotaro Kujo's Stand, Star Platinum]]. [[https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?forums/pc-re-logic.85/ The Journey's End update to it]] made it even more obvious.
--> '''Loki''': "Stardust Guardian now has a more much vigorous and aggressive attack, and he will attack automatically without prompting. [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial All resemblance to a certain anime is purely coincidental.]]"
** Interestingly, Cenx claims that the Stardust Armor was meant as a reference to [[VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft Algalon the Observer]] when it was made, and that she had never even heard of ''[=JoJo=]'' before then. But when the community started drawing comparisons, [[SureLetsGoWithThat the dev team rolled with it]].
* The Meowmere fires out cats with rainbow trails, ala [[MemeticMutation Nyan Cat]]. The Journey's End update adds the Meowmere Minecart, which basically allows you to ride the Nyan Cat.
* The Arkhalis, an Expert Mode-only sword, is the [[Franchise/{{Castlevania}} Valmanway]] in all but the name. Its tooltip, 'I didn't get this off of a Schmoo', pushes the shout out even farther by referencing ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight''. Version 1.4 makes it a Developer's Costume set item for the developer Arkhalis (which has a chance to be given to players that open a Hard Mode Boss's treasure bag in Expert Mode), and put in a weapon called the Terragrim, which is basically the same weapon balanced for pre-Hard Mode with a green blade instead of blue. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The Valmanway, named Crissaegrim in that installment of the series, is a very rare drop from the Schmoo enemy, and the version of the Valmanway that you can upgrade into within ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaDawnOfSorrow'' has a green blade.[[/labelnote]]
* In version 1.3, the Traveling Merchant started selling paintings, including one of [[TrueFinalBoss the Moon Lord]]. The title of that painting? [[VideoGame/{{Splatoon}} Not a Kid, nor a Squid]]
** Another reference could be the Paint Gun that the Painter uses when defending himself, it can shoot all of the possible team colors in ''VideoGame/Splatoon1'' (along with red, which doesn't show up outside of certain Splatfests [[BloodyHorror for good reason]]).
* A number of the Yoyo-class weapons in 1.3 are named after the ones manufactured by the company One Drop, and even possess the company's insignia in their tooltip.
** The Terrarian even has the company's logo in the tool tip. One Drop later [[{{Defictionalization}} Defictionalized]] the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity+1 Yoyo]].
* The description for the buff granted by piloting an UFO says "[[Film/IndependenceDay It's a good thing you had a Mac]]"
* The [[FinalBoss Moon Lord]] will drop the [[VideoGame/{{Portal}} Portal Gun]]. If beaten on Expert, he'll also drop an accessory which allows the player to reverse gravity but only when touching a platform, akin to ''{{VideoGame/VVVVVV}}''.
** The fact that the ''Moon'' Lord drops the Portal Gun may be a reference to [[labelnote:Portal 2 Spoilers]]''VideoGame/Portal2'' in which conversion gel is made up of ground up, portal conductive moon rocks or that the very final portal you place in the (single player) game is on the moon.[[/labelnote]]
** The 1.3.1 update adds the Portal Gun Station (Similar to the rotating pedestals from the first game that held the two portal guns) and the Companion Cube Pet.
*** There is an easter egg involving said Companion Cube. If the cube happens to fall into lava, it will emit the Lunatic Cultist's death sound. If it is submerged long enough in the lava, It will also play the Moon Lord's death sound. Both of those reference the fact it was tossed into the incinerator in the first game. If you are in a dark enough area, It will damage you, A reference to [=GLaDOS=]' reassuring message about how it will never ''[[ExactWords threaten]]'' to stab you.
* The Brain Suckler's banner is called "Nebula [[VideoGame/HalfLife Headcrab]] Banner". Considering [[PersonalSpaceInvader what]] [[ZergRush they]] [[FaceHugger do]], it's a pretty apt comparison.
* Finding a jar of [[http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Tartar_Sauce Tartar Sauce]] in a crate lets you summon a [[http://youtu.be/uVTfszppJl8 mini minotaur]] as a pet. Said mini minotaur is dressed just like a Maulotaur, a boss in ''VideoGame/{{Heretic}}'' and a temporary summoned ally in the sequel, '' VideoGame/{{Hexen}}''.
* There is a lot of discussion on [[EnergyWeapon Last]] [[WaveMotionGun Prism]]'s origin, as it could be either from:
** ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', based on this [[https://derpicdn.net/img/view/2015/7/11/934926__safe_screencap_rainbow+power_spoiler-colon-s05e13_do+princesses+dream+of+magic+sheep_terraria_spot+the+difference_the+last+prism.png scene]].
** ''Series/KamenRiderDouble'', as seen in [=CycloneJokerXtreme=]'s Finisher [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=NF8iK3Mdnnc?t=5m55s Prism Bicker Final Illusion]]
** ''Music/PinkFloyd'', more specifically ''Music/TheDarkSideOfTheMoon''.
** Marisa Kirisame from ''Franchise/TouhouProject'', as this ordinary witch uses a powerful rainbow beam called ''"Master Spark"''
** Vel'Koz of ''VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends'', this reference having grounds on the tooltip of ''Last Prism''.[[note]]The tooltip says: ''"Fire a lifeform disintegration rainbow"'' and Vel'Koz's ultimate ability is ''"Lifeform Disintegration Ray"''.[[/note]]
* The descriptions for the the Wedding Veil and Wedding Dress, dropped from The Bride, have the descriptions "Mawwiage..." and "Wuv... twue wuv..." respectively, from the priest's speech in ''Film/ThePrincessBride''.
* The helmet-and-goggles vanity hat that the Mechanic sells looks very similar to those worn by the Engineer from [[VideoGame/TeamFortress2 Team Fortress 2]].
* Introduced in 1.4 are all of the following:
** The Traveling Merchant will sometimes sell you the [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica Sergeant United Shield]], a weapon similar to the Light Disc. Its tooltip? [[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse "I can do this all day."]]
** Water Chests found in the Ocean can sometimed contain the Shark Bait item, which is used to summon the Shark Pup pet, which has a ''very'' close resemblance to the viral Baby Shark music video. The flavor text also reads "Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo", which is some of the lyrics of the song.
** The Chum Bucket item drops from several Blood Moon enemies you encountered while fishing, and its tooltip is simply [[WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants "Plankton!"]]
** [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants A Magic Conch,]] although it teleports the user to one of the Oceans rather than telling them to do nothing.
** The Stellar Tune, a rare drop from the Empress of Light in a similar vein to Plantera's The Axe, might be a reference to the [[https://stellartone.com Stellartone]] brand of tone controls for electric guitars and bass.
** Another Expert and Master mode exclusive item is added to [[spoiler:the Moon Lord]]'s treasure bag: the Celestial Starboard, a wing item that looks like [[Franchise/{{Kirby}} a giant star shaped board that you ride on, and has a glowing trail behind it]]. Its tooltip simply reads "The more you know", referencing the meme.
** The Travelling Merchant now has a chance to sell a Pretty Pink set of vanity items, which are a complete replication of [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica Kaname Madoka's magical girl outfit]].
** The Bloody Tear, which can be used to summon a Blood Moon, has the tooltip [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaIISimonsQuest "What a horrible night to have a curse."]]
* Chippy's Couch is one to the Terraria-centric content creator [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkfTUab0xxTMPRTNgs9vMCQ ChippysCouch]], whose channel name provided the item's namesake. The flavor text "Heeellllllo Terraria enthusiasts!" was even his old CatchPhrase for a time.
* Since Creator/SpikeChunsoft handled the Japanese console ports of the game, they inserted a few exclusive costumes in place of the Nintendo-referencing ones due to copyright reasons. In their place, they added...
** [[Franchise/{{Danganronpa}} Monokuma]] and [[VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair Monomi]] costumes.
** A [[VideoGame/ShirenTheWanderer Shiren]] costume.
** A Toro costume, based off of the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan mascot.
* The tooltips for the TV Head set reference lyrics from certain songs:
** Video Visage, the head piece, reads [[Music/LemonDemon "You can't see me behind the screen, I'm half human and half machine..."]]
** Lazer Blazer, the torso piece, reads [[WesternAnimation/TheLorax2012 "How bad could business possibly be?"]].
** Pinstripe Pants, the legs piece, reads [[Music/ScissorSisters "I can't decide... leather or suede?"]].
* The Zoologist sells the Leather Whip, which is Castlevania's Vampire Killer in all but name, after filling out 15% of the Bestiary. The tooltip reads "[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight Die,]] [[{{Memes/Castlevania}} monster!]]"
* The Gingerbread Cookie food items tooltip reads "[[WesternAnimation/Shrek1 Not the gumdrop button!]]".
* The [[https://terraria.fandom.com/wiki/Mushroom_set?so=search Mushroom set]] turns you into [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Toad]]. Oh, yeah!
* The Dunerider Boots, the Desert-themed variant on the Boots of Hermes, let you run faster on sand. Their tooltip reads "[[{{Franchise/Dune}} Walk without rhythm and you won't attract the worm]]".
* The travelling Merchant sells vanity sets based on Rosalina and Peach, as well as a pet that summons a [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy Luma]].
* At certain bestiary completion percents, the Zoologist sells both a Lightning Carrot, that summons an electric rabbit that looks a lot like [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Pikachu]], and a Ball O' Fuse Wire, which summons a [[TabletopGame/ExplodingKittens demolitionist kitten]].
* The Squirrel Hook's tooltip is "In the tree, part of the tree", which is chanted by the squirrel in the ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' episode "Up a Tree".
* The tooltip for elderberries reads "[[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail Smells like your father]]".
* The Life Drain weapon is a magical skull staff that steals the health of enemies. Suspiciously similar to a certain weapon in ''VideoGame/{{Blood}}''.

!! Enemies
* There is a rare skeleton wizard enemy named [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail Tim]].
* There is another uncommon enemy found in the Jungle; a zombie named [[Franchise/IndianaJones Doctor Bones]] that drops a unique hat.
* The King Slime mini-boss has a ninja suspended in the middle of it (and drops a piece of the Ninja Outfit when defeated). A giant slime was a boss in the first Ninja Gaiden.
** The King Slime is also a monster from the ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' Games and the Slime Crown resemble that monster. As of 1.3, it even wears a crown, making it look almost similar.
* The Wyvern enemy bears a striking resemblance to another dragon by the name of [[Anime/SpiritedAway Haku]], as well as [[Film/TheNeverendingStory Falkor]].
* When delving the hardcore dungeon, beware the might of the undead martial artist [[Creator/BruceLee Bone Lee]]!
* Plantera is an obvious nod to Music/{{Pantera}}, Cenx's (a.k.a. Redigit's wife) favorite band.
* One of Duke Fishron's attacks involves him summoning Film/{{Sharknado}}s. The Summoning staff you can loot from it lets you summon one (or several) of your own.
* In the 1.3 update, more monsters based on horror monsters now appear in the Solar Eclipse, such as [[Franchise/{{Halloween}} Psycho]], [[Film/CreatureFromTheBlackLagoon Creature From the Deep]], [[Film/TheTexasChainsawMassacre Butcher]], [[Film/TheFly1958 Dr. ManFly]], [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} Mothron]], [[Film/TheExorcist The Possessed]], [[Franchise/{{Hellraiser}} Nailhead]], [[Film/{{Phantasm}} Deadly Spheres]], and [[Literature/{{Frankenstein}} Fritz]]. One of the cut enemies shows resemblance to [[Series/TheAddamsFamily Thing]].
* The [[spoiler: TrueFinalBoss the Moon Lord bears a great resemblance to the TrueFinalBoss of VideoGame/{{Bloodborne}}, the Moon Presence- both are EldritchAbomination [[GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere Giant Space Fleas from Nowhere]] with exposed ribcages that seem to come from the moon.]]
* In hardmode Underground Desert you can find {{Sand Worm}}s called [[Literature/{{Dune}} Dune Splicers]].

!! [=NPCs=] and Dialogue
* Almost every single line the clothier says is a reference to a Creator/TomHanks movie.
* The Goblin Tinkerer will sometimes say "[[Music/{{Motorhead}} Hey, does your hat need a motor? I think I have a motor that would fit exactly in that hat.]]"
* Someone once told the Wizard that [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic friendship is magic]]. [[TakeThat That's ridiculous]]! [[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway You can't turn people into frogs with friendship]]! It doesn't help that the Dryad can have the name "Celestia".
* The Party Girl is [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicPinkiePie very similar to another character who likes parties]] down to the eye color. Two of her possible names go further with the Shout Out with Trixy and Sparkle. In addition, there is also a Pet Turtle you can summon, [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E7MayTheBestPetWin who flies using a small propeller strapped to his shell]]. Journey's End added the Shimmer, which allows you to change the cosmetic appearance of [=NPCs=], and the Party Girl will turn from a Pinkie Pie shoutout into a Rainbow Dash one.
* Two of the names the short, plump, long-bearded Demolitionist can have are...[[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings Gimli]] and [[VideoGame/DwarfFortress Urist]].
* One of the possible names for the gun merchant is Dante. [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry Now, someone named Dante who handles guns, where did I hear that before?]]
* The Shimmered form for the Steampunker is a ''dead-ringer'' for [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteel Mint,]] another incredibly skilled and accomplished (if scatterbrained) mechanic.
* One possible name for the Pirate Captain NPC is [[Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries James T. Beard]]. Also, if the Tavernkeep is around in your world, he will comment that it's about time since [[Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean his rum is almost gone.]]
* The Cyborg will sometimes say "My expedition efficency was critically reduced when a projectile impacted my locomotive actuator". This is an ExpospeakGag version of "[[VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee]]".
* The Princess's name pool includes references to ''Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland'', Ariel from ''WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989'', Belle from ''WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast'', Emilia from ''Literature/ReZero'', (Cure) Flora from ''Anime/GoPrincessPrettyCure'', and ''WesternAnimation/SofiaTheFirst''. Momo (Japanese for "[[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Peach]]") is also part of her name pool, and one of her paintings is of what can only be Peach's castle from ''VideoGame/SuperMario64''.

!! Other
* The dungeon entrances are highly reminiscent of those from ''VideoGame/ZeldaIITheAdventureOfLink''.
* The Cursed debuff looks, acts, and as inflicted [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaI in exactly the same way as it was when Link had to deal with cursed skulls.]]
* The effect of the Ichor debuff (decreases defense), as well as one of the weapons made using Ichor ([[UrineTrouble Golden Shower]]) sounds a lot like [[VideoGame/TeamFortress2 TF2]]'s Jarate.
* Red ice that spreads? [[http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-009 Where have we seen that before?]]
* A few of the hairstyles are shoutouts; The player can get the hairstyles of [[Franchise/SailorMoon Chibi-Usa's/Rini's]], [[Manga/DragonBall Super Saiyan Goku's]], [[Franchise/StarWars Princess Leia's]] and [[Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean Gibbs's]].
* Among the achievements added for Desktop[=/=]Steam, we have the following:

** [[Film/DieHard "Dye Hard"]] for equipping dyes in all the dye slots.

** "Series/BlackMirror" for crafting the Cell Phone.
** The tool tip for "Dead Men Tell No Tales" (for dying ten seconds after opening a Dead Man's Chest) reads [[Film/JurassicPark "You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could open the chest that you didn't stop to think if you should."]]
* The Bestiary entry on the Grub bait item describes it as being [[WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994 "slimy, yet satisfying"]].
* One of the three EasterEgg world seeds creates a bee-themed world. The seed required to get this bee-themed world is, as you may have guessed, '[[Film/TheWickerMan2006 Not the bees!]]'. [[RunningGag Terraria must really love that joke, huh?]]
* While living in a Graveyard, one of the Witch Doctor's quotes is [[https://youtu.be/oHUIU3HG1rk?t=59 "Arise, zombie! Zombie, arise!"]]
* The Underground Jungle is one big shout-out to the Jungle from {{VideoGame/Spelunky}}; it features similar challenges and graphics, and hides [[spoiler:a secret temple that takes heavy influence from Franchise/IndianaJones]].
* The Corruption is ''eerily'' similar to ''Literature/TheColourOutOfSpace''. A faded, sickly purple coloration on everything, plant and animal life turning twisted, the very ground and water becoming tainted...
* One possible death message from FallingDamage is that the deceased "forgot their [[Literature/PeterPan happy thought]]".
