->''Seven! Seven! Seven!''

'''''Ultra Seven''''', the third entry in the ''Franchise/UltraSeries'', is more serious, had very sophisticated writing and plotting, and its style is purely Science Fiction, as opposed to its kid-friendlier predecessor. Ultra Seven is an iconic character, in fact so successful that he (and actor Kouji Moritsugu, who played Dan Moroboshi) has appeared in many subsequent shows and movies, even starring in ''Series/UltramanLeo'' seven (no pun intended) years later. Decades later, Seven receives a SpinOffspring, ''Franchise/UltramanZero''.

Stationary Post Observer (or Agent) #340 from the M78 Nebula was surveying the Milky Way one time. He flew down to planet Earth when he saw a selfless mountain climber named Jiro Satsuma do a HeroicSacrifice to [[CutTheSafetyRope save his friend on a mountain climbing journey]] (Think the movie ''Film/VerticalLimit''). Agent 340 rescued Satsuma in the knick of time, and was so moved by the man's courage that he decided to stay on our planet and patterned his human identity on Satsuma's, going by the name Dan Moroboshi. People would come to know him as Ultra Seven, champion of Earth against alien attacks.
----
!!''Ultra Seven'' provides examples of the following tropes:

* ActingForTwo: Those twin alien girls from "The Secret of the Lake"? In human form, they were played by one actress. "They" appear together at the end of the episode.
* AffectionateParody: Uchimurasebun from around 1993, with Kouji Moritsugu as the Captain. Moritsugu played another Captain in ''Ultraman Zearth 2'', itself another parody.
* AgainstTheSettingSun:
** Dan and [[spoiler:Dorothy Andersen's imposter]] in Episode 15, as well as that episode's ending, with Dan running toward the camera.
** The end of Episode 24, over the skies in Hokkaido.
** The end of Episode 38.
* AIIsACrapshoot[=/=]RidiculouslyHumanRobots: "Nightmare On The Fourth Planet". "Android 0 Directive" is a subversion, as Android Zero did as she was told.
* AirJousting: These two fights were shot at the same time.
** Seven and Alien Metron run toward each other at high speed, jump (complete with a freeze-frame), land on opposite sides without actually hitting each other, and keep running. Metron flies off, Seven just jumps so he's upside down, fires up the Eye Sluggler, then controls it telekinetikally so that it hits the top of Metron's back, then jumps back to a standing position before finishing him up with the Emerium Beam.
** Against Alien Spehl.
** Seven tried this against the Guts Aliens, but it was a NoSell.
* AlienAmongUs
* AllAccordingToPlan:
** Dan already knew about the Ultra Garrison and its members before he ran into Soga and Furuhashi in "The Invisible Challenger"
** How and why the rocket was thrown off course in "Nightmare On The Fourth Planet"
* AlternateContinuity: The Seven movies, video specials, and Ultraseven X are pretty much in their own timeline.
* AnatomyArsenal: So to speak,
** The [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang Eye Slugger]] from the top of his head, by itself, with energy, and combined with telekinesis
** The Emerium Beam lamp from his forehead
** His L-shaped Wide Shot from his right forearm
** His eyes can see invisible aliens
** Knife and shuriken-shaped energy blasts from his hands
** A spiral beam from an outstretched arm
* AndroclesLion: Gorii, once Anne bandages his wounded hand.
* AntiHero: Aoki, and to an extent, Kurata.
* AntiVillain: Numerous aliens are actually terrified of humans trying to destroy their home first. [[spoiler:Alien Annon from episode 16 was talked out of destroying Earth by Seven and went back home. And who knows if those underground robots from 17 were conquerors or merely reacting to several sudden intruders.]] While some actually play up this angle [[spoiler: like the Pittans.]]
* ArtisticTitle: Episodes 1-13 feature an opening logo with scattered paint particles that shake to form the word Ultraseven in Kana; the remaining episodes feature a swirling twin-whirlpool paint effect similar to ''Ultraman''[='=]s opening, the logo appearing in two words, one at the center of each whirlpool, the word Ultra higher and to the left. In all episodes, the logo is followed by the opening credits sequence proper, consisting of silhouettes of Space Station V3, mecha, Dan, and Seven set against a wavy (think lava) multi-color background that changes color as it moves.
** The {{Cinar}} dub of the series had an AnimatedCreditsOpening, which featured lots of laser effects and an animated Ultraseven flying towards the screen.
* {{Badass}}: Seven, just Seven. Both Leo and Zero got their badassery from him.
* BadassInDistress: Dan in Episode 46
* BadassArmy: The Ultra Garrison
* BadassBystander: Dan in "The Invisible Challenger", Jiro Satsuma in Episode 17, both played by Kohji Moritsugu.
* BadassFamily: In the new Ultra Galaxy movie, Seven's son Zero turned out to be even more powerful than his father.
** Anne, Seven's love interest is pretty good in combat as well.
* BatmanInMyBasement:
** Little Hiroshi hides rock monster Ammon in his house in "The Eye That Sees in the Dark".
** Dan stays in a kid's room when hiding from the Ultra Garrison in the last episode.
* BeamOWar: Against Annon, [[spoiler:Windam]], and robot Seven.
* BeastAndBeauty: Anne and Gorii. No, he doesn't get to keep her captive.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Episodes 40, to rescue Seven and 49, to rescue Amagi, among others.]]
* BigBadassBirdOfPrey: No, they don't fly, but Guts Aliens are the space version of this. Their [[LarynxDissonance deep, deep voices]] really don't help either. Aron also counts. And [[AndZoidberg Starbem Gyeron.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
** Sanae's boyfiend in "From Another Planet With Love"
** Dr. Niwa from "The Lonely Earthling"
* BittersweetEnding: Series-wise: Pandon and the Ghos aliens are annihilated, yet Seven is weak and is forced to fly home. Meanwhile, all those cities were blown up. And Dan DidNotGetTheGirl.
** Episode-wise: "The Stolen Ultra Eye" (Maya was abandoned on Earth); "Dark Zone" (The Pegassa home world was destroyed and their envoy stranded on Earth, Seven foils his attempt to blow up the planet); "Glory for Whom" (TheScrappy dies); "Envoy From Nonmalto" (maybe the Nonmaltos were telling the truth...)
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** Gabora (?) from "The Fugitive Fortune Teller" could only be destroyed if the spaceship carrying him was blown up, which he took advantage of by using his [[LosingYourHead disembodied head]] to attack and bite Seven.
** Chibull transformed into a giant brain with eyes and tiny appendages, but only when Android Zero was destroyed.
** Dinosaur Tank [[CaptainObvious combined a living creature with a mecha.]]
** Iron Rocks was a sentient battleship.
** Petelo was a giant cactus.
** Annon was an eyeball living in a rock, which took the vague shape of a prehistoric monster.
** The Pole Aliens were all limbs and head, no midsection.
** The Kanan and Pitt Aliens had oversized eyes, like flies
** The Kappa Aliens looked just like their folk tale counterpart.
** Both the Godora and Pegassa aliens are insect-like. Pegassas had a head like a hammer shark's.
** Eleking was a cross between an eel and Godzilla.
** Mikuras resembles a bipedal bison.
** Alien Wyar was all [[PlantAliens branches and leaves]]
** Alien Bira looked like a stingray with a lobster's tail.
** Alien Metron looks like an upright fish.
** Guyros is a cross between a starfish and an octopus.
** Alien Wild is a [[BigfootSasquatchAndYeti a yeti]]
** Alien Goron is a gorilla with a tail.
* BodyHorror:
** Alien Wyar's habit of turning humans into plants.
** Alien Spehl's welts. The fact that it looks like a mummy makes it scarier.
** Gorii, a human-ape hybrid created by Alien Goron in "The Great Ape Of Terror".
* BondVillainStupidity: The Salome aliens were so proud of their [[EvilKnockoff creation]], they left Dan to die strapped to a table with a bomb about to destroy their base of operations. Dan escaped.
* BottleEpisode: "Showdown at -140º" from the Ultra Garrison's point of view, as they never leave the base until the last five minutes.
* {{Brainwashed}}: Nearly EVERY alien (not all) does this to some unfortunate person in the series, be it a pedestrian, member of the Ultra Garrison, or even Dan himself!
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Furuhashi laughs out loud, then turns to the camera and shushes the audience in Episode 40, after a Guts Alien attacks his racer friend, stealing a McGuffin that happened to be fake.
* TheCassandra: "Seek Tomorrow" AKA "The Fugitive Fortune Teller", "Who Are You?", "Stolen Time"
* CassandraTruth:
** Double dose of subversion in "Stolen Time". After an act of sabotage in the Radar Room, Dr. Yushima, [[spoiler:under alien control]], calls Dan an alien spy (half-truth). Dan claims that Dr. Y is under alien control (he's telling the truth). Since Dr. Y is a respected scientist and [[YouHaveToBelieveMe Dan attacked him (Dan saw him plant a bomb in the boiler room)]], Dan is thrown in a cell. The Ultra Garrison doesn't believe either claim, anyway.
** Played straight in "Dark Zone" with the Ultra Garrison's telling Alien Pegassa [[spoiler:the Earth can't change its orbit at will]] as well as their offer to evacuate their Space Metropolis inhabitants to Earth.
* ChekhovMIA: Seven in Episode 40, so that the Ultra Garrison can save him.
* ChekhovsGift: Furuhashi's gift from Africa in Episode 39, "Seven Assasination Scheme Part I" comes in handy to save the day in Part II.
** Anne's gift to Dan (a necklace) in "Answer Max!" is a clue that [[EvilDoppelganger Dan is not himself...]]
* ChekhovsGun: The necklace from "Answer Max", when Dan, trapped in a see-through tube in the TDF boiler room, tried to shoot it out of an alien's hand, bouncing the laser beam off of the attached medallion, destroying said tube instead.
* {{Chiaroscuro}}
* CementShoes: In this case (Episode 41), Dan was chained to ''a buoy''.
* CerebusRetcon: Seven's Superior tells Dan in "The World's Greatest Invasion" Part I that [[spoiler:Seven's sustained injuries during his stay on Earth have left him in a weakened condition and to transform again will kill him ...]] Previously, Seven had bounced back from all kinds of predicaments [[StatusQuoIsGod none the worse for the wear]].
* CliffhangerCopout: Episode 14 ends with a creepy freeze-frame of King Joe about to pound Seven in the head. Episode 15 begins with a recap and the plot proper begins just before King Joe (weakly) sets his fists down on Seven. Also, see AngstWhatAngst in YMMV.
* ClockworkCreature: Robot Commander
* CoolCar: Based on the 1957 Chrysler Imperial, it's the Pointer. It's even got its own theme song.
* ColdSnap: "Showdown at -140º", "Terror on the Moon"
* ColonyDrop: Space Metropolis Pegassa, many times denser than Earth due to the Pegassa's advanced technology, would have been this if the Ultra Garrison hadn't blown it up in time.
* CombiningMecha: King Joe and Ultra Hawk 1.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Kiriyama, Furuhashi, and Soga are none the worse for the wear after being surrounded by fire in Part I of "The World's Greatest Invasion".
* CrapsackWorld: "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet"
* CreepyChild: Shinichi from "Envoy from Nonmalto" and [[spoiler:Alien Perolinga's human form]] in "The Saucers Are Coming".
** This is what Alien Chibull will turn unsuspecting children to, as well as {{ChildSoldiers}}
* CriticalAnnoyance:
** Iron Rocks has a bomb set to go off some time after it chains up and attacks Seven.
** Played with in "Seven Assassination Scheme", when Seven's Emerium Beam lamp blinks.
** Dan's got 15 minutes to free himself and disarm a bomb, or the base will blow up in "Come in, Max".
** In 15 hours, the victims of the alien spore in "The Human Farm" will die if a cure from Saturn isn't administered. Ultra Hawk 2 is too slow; it'd take the rocket 3 days to reach Saturn. Cue Dan's [[spoiler:staged]] HeroicSacrifice.
* CrucifiedHeroShot: Episodes 39 and 40, complete with EyeLightsOut after [[spoiler: sending a beacon signal to Space Station V3 so that his teammates could find him. It didn't work.]]
** In "Showdown at -140°", [[spoiler:he recharges his body by flying up into the Sun, hovering with arms outstretched and feet together.]]
* CryingWolf: Alien Perolinga claims the amateur astronomer who saw the alien vessels will soon fall victim to this, if he tried to warn the Ultra Garrison often enough. [[AvertedTrope Dan had other ideas.]]
* CueTheSun:
** The last third of Episode 12, including a battle between Seven and Alien Spehl as well as a quieter moment with Dan, Anne, Sanae, and her brother.
** The [[AirJousting fight against Alien Metron]] at the end of Episode 8.
** The end of Episode 20, which happened after a kaijuu darkened the skies, complete with a rainbow.
** The end of "Showdown at -140 degrees", when the snow melts.
** The sun came out in full force after Seven was revived in "Seven Assassination Plan" Part II.
** The end of Episode 22.
* CurbStompBattle: Seven vs. Pandon (both times), Seven vs. Guts Aliens (first battle). Notice Seven was on the losing end in these examples.
* DarkReprise
** The darker version of "Fight! Ultra Seven" can be heard in the cliffhangers of "Seven Assassination Scheme" and "The World's Greatest Invasion", and also while Dan's superior first appears and orders him to leave Earth. This same tune became Dan's (and later, Leo's) Leitmotif in ''Series/UltramanLeo''.
** The Ultra Garrison theme gets its own reprise.
* DarkerAndEdgier
* DarkestHour: Episode 11 when Dan goes up the mountain, Episode 22 when Dan chases the alien armada, Episode 39 when Seven is crucified, Episode 48 after Pandon's defeat, and Episode 49 after the alien's plan of attack becomes clear...
* ADayInTheLimelight: Jiro Satsuma got this in Episode 17, his plight inside the mine shaft may have overshadowed the main plot (underground earthquakes caused by robots!) An episode before that also had [[spoiler: Dan seemingly dying in the first five minutes!]] and the Ultra Garrison, minus Anne, who had to handle the bulk of the work with Seven cleaning up a loose end in the final minute.
* DaylightHorror: Most alien threats take place during the day. The human incidents in "The Targeted Town", as well as Dan's encounter with Alien Metron and their earlier threat to him (he was run off the road by a "driver-less" truck), nearly all took place in broad daylight. (Soga and Furuhashi had their freakout incidents indoors, so it's hard to tell when they happened.)
* [[spoiler:DeadAllAlong: Shinichi from "Envoy from Nonmalto"]]
* DeathByGenreSavvy: The Guts aliens.
* DeusExMachina: The meteorite that lit up the Moon in "Terror on the Moon".
* TheDitz: A shrill woman who stops at a gas station in "Space Prisoner 303".
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: That was the reaction to [[BannedInChina Episode 12]] among a support group for [[UnfortunateImplications survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan]]
** He hides inside a rock, but space monster Ammon is just one big eyeball...
** On a serious note, the victims of the alien spores in "The Targeted Town" [[HatePlague go on violent rampages]], pass out, and soon after forget what happened, reminiscent of some descriptions of alcoholics' behavior.
** One of the Godora aliens, disguised as a woman, shows up at the Ultra Garrison Boiler Room to watch the bomb in there go off. She tells Dan she's not afraid to die...
** From "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet":
*** Robot Commander's treatment of his secretary looks like DomesticAbuse.
*** His guards wear uniforms reminiscent of Soviet or DPRK army uniforms.
*** Robot Commander claims that humans built robots hundreds of years before Dan and Soga's arrival, then took over the planet, enslaving humans. Robot Commander was by then in need of humans to sustain the machines. [[Anime/TheAnimatrix Seems the machines from Zero One ran with the idea]] ...
** The Spehl Aliens, apart from the real life controversy that got Episode 12 banned, give off a [[PaedoHunt paedophilic vibe]].
* DoNotAdjustYourSet: Many times, such as "Stolen Time" (hypnosis via TV screen), "The Invisible Challenger" and Part II of "The World's Greatest Invasion".
* {{Doppelganger}}: Dan is this to Jiro Satsuma. Also, Dan impersonated Masaki Kazamori in the video specials from 1999.
* DoppelgangerSpin: The Prote and Guts aliens.
* DrillTank: Tha Magma Raiser, which was used in the BigDamnHeroes moments above.
* DrivenToSuicide:[[spoiler:Alien Maya]]
* EleventhHourRanger: Kurata in the last episode, after learning Dan was Ultraseven.
* EtherealChoir: The Pole aliens' Leitmotiv.
* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys:
** So believes Alien Goron, who despite looking like a gorilla, has a tail. He thinks he can turn Anne into an ape/human hybrid just like he did with Gorii, his first test subject, once her brain is irradiated.
*** The episode takes place in a monkey zoo, so monkeys of all shapes and sizes get plenty of screentime.
* EvilDoppelganger:
** [[spoiler:Dan and Furuhashi]] in "Answer Max".
** Furuhashi and Soga in "The 0.1 Second Kill".
** Kiriyama's friend Ishiguro in "The Green Terror".
* EvilIsPetty: Robot Commander slaps a girl for not making him coffee the way he likes it.
* EvilKnockoff: Seven had one in "The Decisive Battle of Dan vs. Seven".
* EyeBeams: Seven, Alien Spehl, Android Zero, Alien Goron, and others. Seven in particular [[XRayVision can see invisible aliens]] as well as emit energy blasts.
* EyeLightsOut: Happened to a few kaijus and aliens throughout. For a heroic example, see CrucifiedHeroShot above.
* TheFaceless: The old man in "The Fugitive Fortune Teller" encountered these.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Ultra Seven's Eye Slugger tends to dish these out by slicing monsters to pieces.
* {{Fanfare}}: The main title song (both versions), the song "Urutorasebun" and many parts of the score (especially during a transformation sequence, like in "Fight! Ultraseven")
* FantasticVoyagePlot: "The Flower Where Evil Lies"
* FauxAffablyEvil: Robot Commander
* FingerTwitchingRevival
* FiveManBand[=/=]TrueCompanions: The Ultra Garrison
** TheHero[=/=]SixthRanger: Dan Moroboshi/Ultra Seven
** TheLancer: Soga, the hot-headed sniper
** TheSmartGuy: Amagi, Intelligence expert with an IQ of 200
** TheBigGuy: Furuhashi, a consummate athlete, weapons expert, and laid-back guy
** TheChick[=/=]TheMedic: Anne Yuri, the Token Female
** TheCaptain: Kiriyama, the soft-spoken, fatherly leader
* FlawExploitation: The Metron aliens are counting on humans to turn against each other and fight each other to death so their invasion goes smoothly.
* FlungClothing: From suits and ties to Ultra Garrison uniforms in Episode 12.
* GameBreakingInjury: Or rather, ''injuries'', which weakened him so badly that, in Episode 48, his boss from M78 ordered Dan to go back home and not to transform until ready to leave.
* GenreSavvy: Nearly all aliens initially go for either Dan or the Ultra Eye, sometimes both (like the Salome aliens, who built Robot Seven).
** DangerouslyGenreSavvy: The Guts Aliens
* GloryHound: Aoki from "Glory for whom?", which got him and others killed.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: The [[TransformationTrinket Ultra Eye]]
* GoodIsNotNice: Nuclear scientist [[{{Jerkass}} Dr. Iwamura]], which [[HumanAliens Alien Shapulay]] exploits by trying to con Anne into believing the scientist is an alien.
* [[ImposterForgotOneDetail Godora Forgot Two Details]]: Really, if you impersonate Dan, [[spoiler:you should have been wearing Dan's necklace, the one Anne gave him to cheer him up! Also, a cut on your head shouldn't heal that quickly!]]
* GrandFinale: Episode 49, complete with [[spoiler:a farewell to Anne, a final battle, a BigDamnHeroes rescue, and a flight back to M78.]]
* GratuitousGreek: The Ultra Hawk 1 vessel [[DetachmentCombat can split in mid-air into Alpha, Beta, and Gamma vessels that can fly and shoot lasers]].
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe:
** Alien Spehl, sliced vertically in mid-air. Seven even sends his Eye Slugger skipping over the surface of a lake, just like a stone.
** Alien Wyar
* HatePlague: "The Targeted Town"
* HatesEveryoneEqually: Mr. Ichinomiya from "The Lonely Earthling", to the point of accepting sponsorship from research scientist Dr. Niwa, whom he knows to be Alien Prote in disguise. [[UnwittingPawn Niwa in turn used him for nefarious purposes.]]
* HeroicBSOD: The Ultra Garrison and Captain Kurata, [[MassOhCrap complete with freeze-frames]], when Anne tells them Dan is Seven in the last episode.
* HeroicRROD: Seven, after fighting Pandon, transforms back to Dan and collapses.
* HeroicSacrifice:
** [[HeroicBystander Jiro Satsuma]] per the flashback in Episode 17, which inspired Ultraseven to stay on Earth, copying Satsuma's likeness under the name Dan Moroboshi. Satsuma lived, subverting the trope.
** Mr. Ichinomiya from "The Lonely Earthling" stepped into a teleporter with Dr. Niwa (alien in disguise), presumably killing both.
* HeroicSecondWind: Seven vs. Starbem Guyron, Reconstructed Pandon, Iron Rocks, Crazygon, King Joe, Gabora, Darii, Petero, and so on.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Kurata and Hirota
* HiddenInPlainSight: Dr. Miyabe's formulas for his energy shield in "Project Blue" was written [[spoiler:on a flashlight he kept in his bedroom]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** Pandon was defeated twice by preventing a weakened Seven from using his Eye Slugger. The first time, Seven grabbed it and mutilated Pandon by using the weapon like a sword or knife; the second time was even worse for the kaijuu because he caught it and threw it back at Seven, who used telekinesis to shoot it back, [[OffWithHisHead decapitating the monster.]]
* HonorBeforeReason:
** In "Showdown at -140º", Chief Yamaoka refused to evacuate the base as the temperature was dropping and people were passing out from the cold. In his view, evacuating the base was the same as deserting their duties as an earth defense team.
** Seven himself, even after his superior orders him not to transform and return to M-78 instead.
** Dan promised to be present at Osamu's surgery, and he was, in spite of being seriously injured during one of Crazygon's rampages.
* HourOfPower: Averted, as he can fight almost non-stop. In extreme cases, he does run out of energy...
* HotBlooded: Soga and Kurata
* HumanAliens: [[VoluntaryShapeshifter Dan Moroboshi]] and a few villains (i.e. Icarus, Godora, Pitt, Prote, Shapplay, Borg) throughout the show are this. They're usually HumanoidAliens in their true form.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: The rationale for most alien attacks. Poignantly so in "Dark Zone" and "Envoy from Nonmalto", the latter comes to a conclusion where even Dan is left wondering if it's true...
** The show was pretty big on this, yes. In one episode an alien puts funky space seeds in cigarettes to erode the trust between humankind and cause our civilization to collapse. The narrator assures us that the episode could only happen in the future. Why? Because people don't trust each other enough in the present. Then again in a slightly later one the narrator almost seems to be encouraging this, when he says that if you see a suspicious person you should call the Ultra Garrison, because they might actually be an evil space invader.
** [[spoiler:The Pedan impersonating Dorothy Andersen]] [[WhatTheHellHero calls out the Ultra Garrison]] for sending an "exploration" rocket to planet Pedan. Their "invasion" caused the Pedans to invade Earth in retaliation.
** The Ultra Garrison blew up Starbem Guyron's home world by accident, thinking it was uninhabited. Cue kaijuu attack.
* HumanOutsideAlienInside:
** The reason Dan ran away in Episode 49. Any X-rays would reveal his secret.
** One of the Pitt aliens in "Secret of the Lake", who goes as far as to pretend to refuse medical help.
* HumongousMecha: Windam, King Joe, Yuuton, Iron Rocks, Dinosaur Tank [[spoiler: and Fake Ultraseven]]
** CombiningMecha: King Joe
* IllGirl: Osamu (a boy) in "The Brave One". Akira (another boy) in "The Strange Neighbor". Amagi's fiancée in "The Flower Where Evil Lies". Anne and her friend in "The Human Farm"
* ICanStillFight: Dan does this in Episode 49, after Seven's epic near-loss to Bandon. [[TheDeterminator No creepy hologram of his boss, or even a friendly prompting from Anne will stop him.]] He was doing this when he first realized he was ill.
* IdiosyncraticWipes: Episode 46 and the flashback sequence in Episode 39.
* IdiotBall: In Episode 46, Dan and Anne were following a Salome alien responsible for blowing up a ship. Dan blew it when he [[DistractedByTheSexy would stare at the "pretty girl" for a long time]], [[WhatAnIdiot then chased her by car at high speed]]. Not long after, he got captured.
* ImportedAlienPhlebotinum:
** In "Seven Assasination Scheme", the rock that Furuhashi's car racer friend sent him from Africa could [[spoiler:produce a powerful beam to revive Seven in time to prevent his execution by the Guts aliens.]]
** "Radiation Alpha 73" from Saturn in "The Human Farm" is the only thing that can cure an alien infection.
** The big rock in "The Green Terror" is made of Tilsonite 808.
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: The Eye Slugger
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: [[spoiler: [[ChekhovsGunman Furuhashi's]] gun]] in Episode 38 "Battle of Bravery."
* ImprovisedWeapon: [[spoiler:Atomized red paint, used in "The Invisible Challenger" against the Cool aliens]]
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: Alien Nurse, an all-metal [[ItMakesSenseInContext self-coiling]] kaijuu to boot.
* IronicEcho: All three of the Guts Aliens' Leitmotivs (Aron vs Seven, Dan's first encounter with the aliens, and the fight leading to the crucifixion) can be heard at double speed when Seven destroys their spaceship.
* ISurrenderSuckers: In "Project Blue", Alien Bado pretended to beg for mercy after Seven had the upper hand during their fight, only to produce some kind of stabbing weapon, which he tried to poke Seven in the face with. Seven then tosses him headfirst against some rocks.
** Alien Plastic did something similar, so Seven tried to fly off, only to be frozen in place.
* {{Jerkass}}: Kurata, in spite of his Ensemble Darkhorse status, is often condescending, cocky, competitive, and quick-tempered.
* {{Kappa}}: Tepeto, who not of Earth, but controlled by aliens.
* KarmicDeath: Gas-guzzling, fire-breathing Kurasso...burned to death, engulfed in flames.
* KnightOfCerebus: The Guts and Ghos aliens.
* KryptoniteFactor: Extreme cold
* LargeHam: Furuhashi and Soga. Dan and Kiriyama have their moments.
* TheLastDance: Seven vs Reconstructed Pandon.
* LastSecondChance: Seven successfully convinced Ammon to leave Earth this way. Alien Pegassa got angry and tried to blow up Earth instead when Dan tried this after Pegassa's space colony was destroyed.
* LeeroyJenkins: [[EnsignNewbie Prospective team member Aoki]], who nearly killed Dan and Kiriyama in mid-air, and caused the death of many soldiers on the ground when an alien he failed to report attacked during an exercise. Dan uncharacteristically (for this show) lost his temper and smacked him just before he redeemed himself and died.
* LooksLikeCesare: The human guise of Alien Icarus.
* LooksLikeOrlok[=/=]FacialHorror: Alien Bado
* ManlyTears:
** [[spoiler:When Dan "dies" in "Fly to the Mountain of Evil", his teammates (Anne is missing, somehow) take it very hard. The twist is that Soga in particular ScreamsLikeALittleGirl, sobbing loudly, yelling out Dan's name.]]
** The end of Episode 49.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Seeing as Seven is [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld thousands of years old]] and Anne is twentyish...
* MeaningfulBackgroundEvent: In the episode "Escape From Area X" Dan is seen covering his ears while an Ultra Garrison staff officer is explaining the concept of [[PhantomZone virtual space]] to Kiriyama. This may look like a blooper, but Alien Bell, which was hiding in that virtual space, emits an ear-piercing ring that bothers and eventually harms humans, but it can and does stun a HumanAlien like Dan. It seemed like Dan's hearing could pick up the sound no matter how faint. Cue [[HellIsThatNoise the ear piercing ring]] coming out of the radio a few seconds later.
* MeaningfulName: Moroboshi = Many stars. Also, from Pandora, ''Pandon''
* MindManipulation: Almost half of the entire series's aliens have used this on the Ultra Garrison to do their bidding in their plans to take over the world. There are so many different examples of this that it may probably take up most of this page.
** Alien Bira
** Alien Metron
** Alien Iyros
** Alien Shaplay
** Alien Kanan
** Alien Borg
** Dally
** Alien Mandala
** Dancan
** Alien Pega (His own subtitle is Hypnosis Alien!)
** Alien Goron
** Alien Salome
** Alien Ghose
* MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness: Arguably a 2: Mohs/WorldOfPhlebotinum, as it tries to offer more scientifically logical explanations for things that occur in the show, yet at the same time, concepts such as Seven himself are hard to explain scientifically. However, it is above most Ultra Series and even some Godzilla films, which are pure fantasy stuff at times.
* MonumentalDamage: In the last episode, the Ghos Aliens use underground missiles to blow up several world cities such as New York, London, and Paris. [[DoNotAdjustYourSet As they alert the Ultra Garrison]], they show StockFootage as [[spoiler:Amagi]] reads their demands out loud.
* MoodWhiplash: Examples:
** Part of the setup for Episode 39 (a daytime patrol by two Ultra Garrison members that came up with nothing but a happy scene at an amusement park full of unsuspecting people), compared to what happened after Dan and Anne run into the Guts aliens...
** The was a hilarious moment in Episode 24 "Return North!" when the Kanan aliens, operating out of a lighthouse, place Windam under their control, causing him to attack Dan. Dan transforms and "defeats" his friend by wearing him down, complete with "Fight! Ultraseven" playing in the background. This happens just as Furuhashi has a close call with an airliner.
* MurderousMannequin: Android Zero, complete with an electrifying handshake, EyeBeams, and hand beams.
* NonHumanSidekick: Three Capsule Monsters: [[{{Mon}} Windom, Mikuras, and Agira]]. Dan summons them by throwing their respective capsules.
** They predate Pokemon by about 25-30 years.
* NonIndicativeName:
** The Eye Slugger, Seven's boomerang-like weapon
** The Magma Raiser, the Ultra Garrison's DrillTank
** The Ultra Eye, being a pair of goggles
** The Pointer is a CoolCar.
** The Ultra Hawks (three of them) are cool mecha; Vessels 1 and 3 are planes, 2 is a rocketship.
** Averted with the Talk machine the Salome Aliens used on Dan.
* NonIndicativeTitle: Ultra Seven is the name of just one character, not a team of seven Ultramen.
* NoRomanticResolution
* NothingIsScarier: Episodes 18, 19, and 25 have their moments.
* NoSell: Against the Guts Aliens (first fight), Starbem Gyeron (with the Eye Slugger, no less), King Joe, and Pandon (first fight, when the Emerium Beam won't even fire; second fight, when Seven threw the Eye slugger and Pandon caught it and threw it back; then Seven used telepathy to defeat him with it).
** In episode 40, the Ultra Garrison tried to rescue a crucified Ultra Seven from the air by firing an AppliedPhlebotinum beam into Seven's Emerium lamp. [[spoiler: Too bad it was a hologram]].
* NotHimself
** Amagi in Episode 49.
** Windam in "Return North!".
** Seven before he fought Dancan in "The Vaporized City".
** Dr. Yushima in "Stolen Time".
** Kiriyama's comrade-in arms Ishiguro in "The Green Terror", after returning to Earth.
** Anne, when Alien Kuraso took her hostage.
** Hirota
* NuclearNasty: Alien Spehl
* NuclearWeaponsTaboo: Subverted throughout the show; played straight with the banned episodes.
* OffWithHisHead: Alien Chibull, Gabora ([[LosingYourHead it then took a life of its own]]), Alien Prote (it was a Hologram, though), and Reconstructed Pandon, to name a few. In a subversion, Alien Goron's head separated from his body when Seven blew him up.
* OhCrap:
** In "Come in, Max!" when Anne figures Dan is an impostor...
*** Also, when dan saw the girl in the boiler room.
** In "The Targeted Town" when Dan finally met Alien Metron...
** Dan's reaction to seeing Robot Seven.
** The [[MassOhCrap Ultra Garrison's NoSell rescue]] in Episode 40, see above.
* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: He lacked a Color Timer (or a time limit in his true form, for that matter), unlike his predecessor. That made him more powerful in comparison. He was still weakened by extreme cold and could still run out of energy and sustain severe injuries if faced with a powerful enough enemy.
* OneWomanWail: When Dan and the Pole Aliens communicate.
* OrWasItADream: Dan thinks his superior officer is just a nightmare brought on by his weakening condition, then the Ultra Eye pops out of his pocket and flies across the room to float in front of an owl-shaped cuckoo clock. Dan sits on the bed and reaches for his pocket, realizing the Ultra Eye is not there after all.
* OurHeroIsDead
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The Spehl Aliens and Alien Wyar
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: The intangible Shadow Men from "Invasion by the Dead"
* PainfulTransformation: Alien Chibull in "Android Zero Directive"
* PatrioticFervor: What gets the Ultra Garrison especially worked up about the deaths in "The Ultra Garrison Goes East" is that [[spoiler:as foreigner assassinations on Japanese soil]] they make Japan look bad. Not to mention, they were scientists from the Western Hemisphere side of the Garrison.
* PhantomZone: Alien Icarus' Fourth Dimension, which Dan successfully breached. The virtual space that Alien Bell was hiding in, too. Also, see SquashedFlat below.
* PhlebotinumBattery: The Sun. Also, see ImportedAlienPhlebotinum above.
* PlantAliens: Alien Wyar
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: The Eye Slugger
* PublicExecution:
** In "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet", Robot Commander staged live executions of insubordinate humans that aired on TV for his amusement. Dan and Soga didn't realize these executions were real when they first witnessed them as they happened.
** [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim Instead of quietly killing Dan]], the Guts Aliens figure they'll capture Seven, show him to the world for less than 24 hours, and assasssinate him just as the world looks on. They thought the people of Earth would surrender quickly after.
* RaceAgainstTheClock:
** In Episode 39, the Ultra Garrison has about 10 hours (until 5:21AM the following day) to save Seven from execution.
** In Episode 37, it was ''seven'' hours from the time the Ultra Garrison got word of the Magellans' incoming missile to impact (midnight). Dan ended up recovering the Ultra Eye 30 minutes before impact.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Aoki, who killed a kaijuu, apologized about his misdeeds and died.
* RedShirt: A young, impetuous upstart called Aoki in "Glory For Whom?", and Soga's sniper rival Kiyota in "The 0.1 Second Kill".
* ReflectiveEyes: "Number 340! No, let's call you by your name on Earth: Ultra Seven."
* TheReveal: From "Envoy from Nonmalto", [[spoiler:Shinichi was DeadAllAlong]]
* {{Revenge}}: The Zampa alien from "Terror On the Moon". In "Super Weapon R-1", Starbem Guyron (a bird-like sentient creature) instinctively targeted Earth, seeing as Earthlings blew up its home planet.
* TheRightOfASuperiorSpecies:
** In "Dark Zone", the Pegassas expected Earth [[spoiler:to change its orbit on a dime]] to avoid a collision with their space colony. Since that wasn't going to happen, they would have destroyed the Earth anyhow, seeing as any planet not advanced enough to comply was not worth their time.
** Since the Ultra Garrison and Dr. Miyabe's Defense Barrier got in their way of an invasion and got one of their alien vessels destroyed, Alien Bado was willing to blow up the Earth.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Capsule Monster Windam]]
* SayMyName: "DAAAAAAAAAN!"
* ScareChord: A show specialty; in fact, one of the first bits of music, the one that introduces the Ultra Garrison, sounds like a series of chords.
* ShapeshifterModeLock: Seven, whenever his [[TransformationTrinket Ultra Eye]] [[RunningGag was stolen]]. Also, when he was defeated in the opening minutes of ''Series/UltramanLeo'', he was stuck in human form. He recovered offscreen. "Escape From Area X" is a subversion; while Alien Bell's chirp prevented him from using the Ultra Eye, he transformed by sheer force of will regardless.
* ShaggydogStory: "The Stolen Ultra Eye" from Maya's point of view; "Dark Zone" from Alien Pegassa's point of view.
* SixthRanger: Dan first showed up as a civilian [[AllAccordingToPlan that happened to run into Furuhashi, Soga, and an alien invasion.]] After suggesting a method to make the otherwise invisible Cool aliens visible and vulnerable to attack, he rode shotgun in one of the Ultra Hawks to deploy the Ultra Garrison's ImprovisedWeapon. The plane crash-landed and he called on Windam to attack the alien ships. When Windam was overwhelmed, he called him back, transformed, killed an alien, set the hostages free, and took the alien ship into outer space to be blown up. Dan was then inducted as a full member of the Ultra Garrison.
** Captain Kurata in Episode 49, after his HeroicBSOD.
** Furuhashi's friend Ayako, in Episode 40.
* TheSoCalledCoward: According to Kurata, Dan failed to stop the Ghos aliens on first sight and ran away after his team was attacked. [[TheLastDance Dan had bigger fish to fry.]]
* {{Sizeshifter}}: From giant-sized (most of the time) to the size of a small insect, and sometimes even human-sized.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Pandon was originally called Bandon. Also, the anglicized names vary all over the place.
* SquashedFlat[=/=]PhantomZone: One episode had aliens do this to humans, not by literally squashing them, but by [[spoiler: taking their picture, somehow capturing their life essence on film, leaving the inert bodies behind]]
* ShootTheShaggyDog: The Magellan aliens always intended to blow up the Earth, never mind Maya was left behind.
* ShoutOut
** "The Strange Neighbor" is this ''Ultra'' series' homage to ''Film/RearWindow''.
** "The Green Terror" references both [[spoiler:''Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' as well as ''Film/InvasionOfTheBodySnatchers'']].
** Pedan Robot King Joe [[{{Tuckerization}} is named after writer Tetsuo ''Kinjou'']]
** Episode 31 is reminiscent of ''Film/FantasticVoyage''
** The opening credits may refer to the ''Bond'' movies, [[Film/YouOnlyLiveTwice one of which]] had just wrapped up production in Japan.
* SoundtrackDissonance: Tense moments in Episode 8, as well as the TearJerker end of Episode 12, are scored to upbeat, classical-sounding, music.
* StarfishAliens: Metron, Wyar, Guyros
* {{Telekinesis}}: Seven's got it, may explain his "Urutora Nenriki" (force of will) power [[Series/UltramanLeo later on]].
* {{Telepathy}}: How Seven communicates with Annon in "Glowing Eye in the Darkness", the Pole aliens in "Showdown at -140 Degrees", and Alien Maya in "The Stolen Ultra Eye".
* ToKnowHimIMustBecomeHim: The Guts aliens unleash flying kaijuu Aron, who takes on Seven in a protracted battle to assess Seven's strengths and weakness, as well as discover his SecretIdentity.
* TooPowerfulToLive: Crazygon, Guts, Ghos, King Joe, Pandon.
* TransformationTrinket: The Ultra Eye
* {{Tuckerization}}: From Kinjo to ''King Joe''
* {{Ultraterrestrials}}: The antagonists in "Envoy from Nonmalto", no pun intended.
* UnPerson: A salary man becomes one courtesy of aliens in "Who Are You?".
* VisualPun[=/=]StealthPun: Pandon coming out of a box. ''Pandora's Box''
* XRayVision: Dan/Seven can see invisible aliens.
* WhamEpisode: "The Ultra Garrison Goes West", "Seven Assassination Scheme", and "The World's Greatest Invasion", all two-part episodes.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Agira and Mikuras weren't mentioned in the show after their final appearances. In Agira's case, Dan never called him back in Episode 46. All Capsule Monsters would show up again in other continuities.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: "The Dark Zone" provides a thorough deconstruction of this trope. A TearJerker.
* WhatTheHellHero: Both Kiriyama and TDF Chief Yamaoka got one from a subordinate for not evacuating the base quick enough during the huge blizzard in "Showdown at -140º", causing unnecessary casualties.
** Dan calls Aoki out on his recklessness.
** Soga and Kiriyama call out Kurata in the last episode after he accused Dan of failing to prevent the alien invasion and being a coward.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: In Amagi's case, explosions and heights.
* WorthyOpponent: Seven to numerous aliens who treated him like an actual individual. Sometimes Seven could even talk a few aliens out of attacking Earth since they would trust his word over any human's.
** The Pedan aliens specifically ask Dan to join them.
** The Metron aliens warn Dan to stay away from Kitagawa (where "The Targeted Town" is set) as they don't want to kill another alien.
* WouldHitAGirl: One of Alien Metron's victims, as well as Robot Commander.
* TheWorfEffect: King Joe, Crazygon, Alien Guts (actually two) and Pandon (''he'' may not be a straight example as [[WorfHadTheFlu Seven already was in bad shape when they fought]])
* YouAreNumberSix: The explanation for Ultra Seven's name is he's the unofficial seventh member of the Ultra Garrison with the way he keeps showing up to save their bacon. Lampshaded in the Cinar dub.
** Also, Stationary Post Observer # 340, as his commander called him in "The World's Greatest Invasion".
** Dan Moroboshi is a ''SixthRanger'', and based on the above rationale, the sixth Ultra Garrison member.
