Denji Sentai Megaranger (Electromagnetic Squadron Megaranger) is the twenty-first installment in the Franchise/SuperSentai series, running from 1997 to 1998. Adapted in the US as Series/PowerRangersInSpace.

Kenta Date is a high-school underachiever who enjoys two things: eating yakiniku and playing the "Megaranger" arcade video game. One day, a couple of recruiters show up. It turns out that the Megaranger game is really a simulation intended to recruit people to become actual Megarangers. Kenta is the first person to be good enough at the game to be recruited. While Mentors Dr. Kubota tries to talk Kenta into accepting, the Earth is invaded by Nejiregia, invaders from the Twisted Dimension. Due to the emergency, the Megaranger gear is given to Kenta and four of his classmates who happened to be in the area. And the battle begins...

The heroes and their gear are themed after different pieces of digital technology. Manages to avoid being too TotallyRadical given the show was made when computers were first becoming mainstream, but technology still marches on.

Not to be confused with Series/PowerRangersMegaforce, the Franchise/PowerRangers counterparts to Series/TensouSentaiGoseiger and Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger. The Power Rangers Megaforce have been referred to as "Mega Rangers" on occasion.

!!The heroes:
* Kenta Date / Mega Red: TheHero. Comes off as an IdiotHero, but he's really ObfuscatingStupidity out of laziness. He's not the official leader, but he takes point because he's the Red, and that's just the way things are done in Sentai.
* Koichirou Endoh / Mega Black: TheBigGuy. The complete opposite of Kenta, as he is an overachiever who treats everything as SeriousBusiness. He's the official leader, but most people forget this since he's not Red.
* Shun Namiki / Mega Blue: The Smart Lancer and computer graphics artist. Aloof at first, but he gets better.
* Chisato Jogasaki / Mega Yellow: TheHeart and aspiring (digital) photographer. She's basically a milder version of Kouichirou.
* Miku Imamura / Mega Pink: A gluttonous female version of Kenta. She comes off as TheDitz, but like Kenta, she's also ObfuscatingStupidity.
* Yuusaku Hayakawa / Mega Silver: SixthRanger. His powers have a WeaksauceWeakness time limit .
* Dr. Eikichi Kubota: Mentors Their mentor and the creator of Megaranger suits

!!The villains (Nejiregia):
* Emperor Javious I: The BigBad. Because he's just an eye in a wall, he's more like TheManBehindTheCurtain, and the other villains know this.
* Dr. Hinelar: EvilGenius In Chief. The de facto leader of Nejiregia, since the official leader is just an eye in a wall. Hinelar knows this.
* Yugande: TheDragon and WorthyOpponent to the Megarangers. Due to his methods, he functions as TheBrute as well
* Shiborena: DarkChick. Eventually revealed to be
* Bibidebi: Evil TeamPet. Responsible for making the Monsters Of The Week grow giant.
* Guirail: Evil SixthRanger and TheStarscream. Introduced as a second Dragon, but has no loyalty to anyone or anything, which results in him getting into an EnemyCivilWar with the honorable Yugande.
* : [[spoiler:Technically another SixthRanger that appear in Megaranger vs Gingaman. Shibolena's PaletteSwap that attempt to destroy the Megaranger for Dr.Hinelar.]]
* The Nejirangers: ThePsychoRangers.
** Neji Red: BigBad Also another Dragon to Hinelar.
** Neji Black: TheDragon
** Neji Blue: TheBrute
** Neji Yellow: EvilGenius
** Neji Pink: DarkChick
** Neji Silver: SixthRanger Actually Yuusaku in a Nejiranger costume.

!!Recurring Super Sentai tropes:

* AlasPoorVillain
**
* AllYourPowersCombined: The Multi-Attack Rifle. In a subversion, it is formed from all but Kenta's weapon.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: "M" is for Megaranger
* ByThePowerOfGrayskull: "Install! Megaranger!
** Yuusaku has "Keitaizer! Install!", named from his TransformationTrinket.
* CallingYourAttacks:
* CoolBike: Mega Silver's Auto Slider, which can transform into a hoverboard much like the Cyber Sliders rode by the main team.
* Crossover: Megaranger vs. Carranger, where the Megarangers get the exclusive Megatector armors.
* FinishingMove:
* FiveManBand
** TheHero: Kenta
** The Big Leader: Koichirou Mega Black's description is "Powerful, but rather slow".
** The Smart Lancer: Shun
** TheHeart: Chisato
** TheChick: Miku
** SixthRanger: Yuusaku
* HomeBase: INET base
* HumongousMecha: After six straight shows that started with five-piece combinations, the Galaxy Mega was the first main robot since the Five Robo that was combined from less than five mechas. In fact, the Galaxy Mega is the first main robot since the Bio Robo that is formed from only two mechas. This was later remedied with the introduction of the Mega Voyager, in addition to support robots for both.
** AMechByAnyOtherName: The Voyager Machines, the components of the Mega Voyager.
** CombiningMecha:
*** Mega Ship + Mega Shuttle = Galaxy Mega
*** Ro Voyager 1 + Shuttle Voyager 2 + Rocket Voyager 3 + Saucer Voyager 4 + Tank Voyager 5 = Mega Voyager
** TransformingMecha:
*** Delta Mega, which has a shuttle mode
*** Mega Winger, Mega Silver's mecha, has three modes (fighter, tank and jet).
** MechaExpansionPack
*** Galaxy Mega + Delta Mega = Super Galaxy Mega
*** Mega Winger doesn't actually combine with anything, but it can lend its Mega Wing attachment to the Mega Voyager, allowing it to become the Wing Mega Voyager.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: All episodes use excited episode titles.
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: All shout their respective names, followed by Denji Sentai! Megaranger!
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Kenta is the only one with the Battle Riser, which allows, amongst other things, the formation of Super Galaxy Mega. We're also told his computer-symbol allows him to program any skill into himself.
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: Bibidebi's only reason for living. When a monster is beaten, he beams down and bites them with a growth virus.
* MonsterOfTheWeek: The animal-like Nejire Beasts, later upgraded into the more robotic Psycho-Nejilars.
* Mooks: The Kunekunes.
** KingMook: The MonsterOfTheWeek in one episode was Boss Kunekune, identical to the other Mooks except for a black head and PsychicPowers. His idea of MakeMyMonsterGrow was having his flunkies pile on top of him, forming a giant mass of Kunekune the Rangers had to call in their mecha to deal with.
* OnTheNextEpisodeOfCatchPhrase
* RegularCaller
* SuperMode: Miku gets one for an episode. Yugande gets one in the finale. The entire team gets the Mega Tector armor in Megaranger vs Carranger.
* SupervillainLair: Grand Nejiro
* ThemeMusicPowerUp
* TitleScream
* TransformationNameAnnouncement: "Complete! Galaxy Mega!"
* TransformationTrinket: A trope applying to all Super Sentai, but notable here in that Yusaku's TransformationTrinket is the very first use of a cell phone as such in Super Sentai, which has since become ubiquitous to the point of absurdity. Justified here given that the show's entire theme is digital technology; later shows completely lack any justification.
** No justification except that cell phones are rapidly approaching ubiquity in real life, thus making a cell phone-shaped morpher extremely easy to hide or carry.
** They are ubiquitous now (one of several things the show got right), but as a TransformationTrinket they would be somewhat more difficult to use mid-battle than a bracelet, with maybe only Boukenger showing otherwise.
* TwoGirlsToATeam: The seventh Yellow and Pink duo and the third one in a row. This was the last Sentai team with two female rangers at the same time for the next six years.
* WeaponOfChoice:
** BifurcatedWeapon: The Mega Snipers. Primarily a Handguns gun, but can either split into two smaller guns or combine with the Megaranger's personal weapons into a "Sniper" gun.
** SuperWristGadget: The Battle Riser.
** Kenta: Drill Saber Drill Saber + Mega Sniper = Drill Sniper. It later upgrades into the Drill Sniper Custom
** Kouichirou: Mega Rod Mega Rod + Mega Sniper = Rod Sniper
** Shun: Mega Tomahawk Mega Tomahawk + Mega Sniper = Tomahawk Sniper
** Chisato: Mega Sling Mega Sling + Mega Sniper = Sling Sniper
** Miku: Mega Capture A stun/capture gun Mega Capture + Mega Sniper = Capture Sniper
** Yuusaku: Silver Blazer Gun and Sword modes.

!!Tropes specific to Denji Sentai Megaranger:

* ActingForTwo: Actually three. Asami Jo portrayed three character. Shizuka, Shibolena and Hizumina. [[spoiler:All of whom are Replacement Goldfishes to each other]].
* ArmCannon: Delta Mega has gatling guns on each arm.
* Avenging the Villains: .
* BadassBookworm: Yuusaku. Designs mecha by day, beats down mooks barehanded and untransformed ...er, also by day. It helps that he works out.
* CatchPhrase: "Game Over!", said before destroying the MonsterOfTheWeek with Galaxy Mega. Dropped when they switch to Mega Voyager.
* CoolOldGuy[=/=]OlderSidekick: Mega Silver may be the SixthRanger, but Yuusaku Hayakawa (age 25) is this to the rangers.
%% * CompetitiveBalance
%%** JackOfAllStats: Kenta and Miku.
%%** MightyGlacier: Koichirou
%%** FragileSpeedster: Chisato
* CompressedHair: Many of Shibolena's disguises feature her with long hair. Justified that it's more like a transformation than disguise.
* CoolSword: In a sense. The Galaxy Mega has the second-highest number of sword finishers in Sentai history, losing only to the semi-sentient Bio Robo.
* CreepyCentipedes: Centipede Nejire is not only creepy but is rather formidable foe as well. Thank to its "SummonMagic" and that Delta Mega being "mind-controled".
* DancingTheme: The second ending theme, "Bomb Dancing Megaranger.""Bomb" here may be a mistranslation or a pun on the fact that it should be Bon dance (bon-odori).
* EarnYourHappyEnding: The last arc, in general. [[spoiler:The Nejiregia managed to expose the Megarangers' identity to the school, and this in turn causes everyone to drive the Megarangers away from their school, even if they're model students like Kouichirou or not-so-insufferable geniuses like Shun, and everyone lost their will to fight on. But the Nejiregia still continued their assault to humanity, so the Megarangers pick up their resolve to fight on, save mankind and in the same process, restore their reputation that they're not bad students, but fighting to save their asses. It works and they're welcomed back, and able to graduate.]]
* EggMcGuffin: Komutan.
* ElementalPowers: The Nejiranger's true forms each have one:
** PlayingWithFire: Neji Red/Neji Phantom
** DishingOutDirt: Neji Black/Neji Vulgar
** AnIcePerson: Neji Blue/Neji Bizzare
** BlowYouAway: Neji Yellow/Neji Sophia... sort of
** GreenThumb: Neji Pink/Neji Jealous
* EliteMook: Boss Kunekune, a MonsterOfTheWeek.
* EnemyCivilWar: Guirail and Yugande clash over Guirail's more underhanded tactics vs. Yugande's more honorable methods. [[spoiler:It hits the fan when Guirail severely injures Yugande by using him as a HumanShield against the Megarangers. Hinelar then decides to end it by offering Guirail a power-up that's really PsychoSerum that turns Guirail into a mindless OneWingedAngel. Guirail is soon the first to be killed by the Megarangers' MidSeasonUpgrade mecha.]]
** EvenEvilHasStandards, EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: All those because at least Hinelar form a strong bond/companionship with his creations (Shibolena and Yugande) and would take care of them greatly, Guirail does not, so he learns the hard way what happens when some 'newcomer' made not by him tried to double cross his 'family'.
* FairytaleWeddingDress: In episode 16, Miku bought one when she and everyone thought they will die thanks to Poison Moth Nejire. After the plot resolve it was discovered by Chisato who teases her that whom Miku will wear it for.
* GiantMook: King Kunekune, which is Boss Kunekune surrounded by a "body" of Kunekunes.
* GirlishPigtails: Miku. Surprisingly, she lost it when she reappears in Gaorangers vs Super Sentai
** TruthInTelevision: Not that surprising really - her short hairdo shows that ShesAllGrownUp.
* GratuitousEnglish: The opening (and the transformation sequence) gives us this garbled mess.
** Tighten up reality gangster / Stigma through idiot hearing / Keep frustration clear / Patience open ahead / Getting away with it lead / Some distant memory drove / Get the message / Indiscipline all remains / Wish double editorials cover / Under stress new canoe / Primal tribal / [a final line which is obscured by the main text of "MEGA[insert color here] READY"].
* HighSchool: All the Megarangers except Yuusaku are high-school students.
* HomeBase: Subverted - Nejirejia destroys INET's Earth base very early on, so for most of the show Megaranger's 120-man strong support team is based aboard the Mega Ship. They're in there during battles as well.
* HypocriticalHumor: With a FreudianSlip to match.
-->Kenta: *seeing Miku eating a lot* Miku, did you just get fatter?
-->Miku: (Beat) Fat?
-->Shun: Kenta, you shouldn't bemean a woman's heart with words like that!
-->Miku: Shun, did I get fatter?
-->Shun: Yep - I mean, just a little!
* IdiotHero: Megaranger began this trope in Sentai. It's now used at least every other series, but Megaranger is one of the only ones to actually justify it with ObfuscatingStupidity.
* IronicEcho: Guirail constantly claims that "To defeat Megarangers, we must do whatever it takes."
* MidSeasonUpgrade: Mega Voyager for the heroes, Yugande's repaired form and the switch to cyborg Monsters Of The Week for the villains.
* MrFanservice: Yusaku can qualify as one.
* MsFanservice: All main female characters.
* NiceHat: Because of the way the Mega Shuttle combines with the Mega Ship, it looks like Galaxy Mega is wearing a nice shuttle-shaped hat. Behold.
* OfficialCouple: and are both heavily implied. Even qualify this. This doesn't stop the ShipTease though.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Bibdebi. His name even come from the word devil(debi in japanese). Dr.Hinelar appearance(specifically, his "horns") is also seem to be inspired by one as well.
* PaletteSwap: Perhaps an unintentional genius moment, but like in older video games, the Megarangers' suits are near identical save for color and a slight difference in vizor shape.
**
* PantyShot: Miku has a famous one in episode 50.
** Shibolena's can be seen alot. Lampshaded by Yusaku in episode 36.
--> Yusaku:"The view from down here is pretty good too."
--> Shibolena:"Really?(held her sword) This will cool you down!"
* ParentalAbandonment: .
* PacManFever: Inverted; the Megaranger game at the beginning of the show had photo-realistic graphics (at least for the characters; there's not much in the way of backgrounds) due to it being actors in suits.
* ProductPlacement:
** In the first episode, if you look hard enough when Kenta is playing the Megaranger arcade, you'll see there's an VideoGame/X-Men Vs Street Fighter machine behind him.
** In episode 14, when Kenta is scolding the little children at the arcade, you can blatantly see a VirtuaCop 2 machine in clear sight.
* ThePsychoRangers: The US adaptation of the Nejirangers is the TropeNamer.
* ReplacementGoldfish:
**
* RocketPunch: Super Galaxy Mega's finishing blow.
* RecycledInSpace: Series/KousokuSentaiTurboranger with digitial technology replacing automobiles as the theme.
* SecretIdentity: As they're just highschoolers, the Megarangers keep their identities as secret as possible - a point hammered home by the Nejirangers attacking users of a popular wireless 'net access device, just because it made the same sound as their TransformationTrinket. Yuusaku, on the other hand, has no such reservations, and frequently doesn't bother. Then again, near the end of the series Dr. Hinelar does find out who the Rangers are, and sends a monster to attack them at school, leading to them being ostracized and having to live in an old warehouse.
* ShipTease: While there're official couples above, Kenta gets fair share of teases with both Chisato and Miku and in the former case the times is almost equal to Chisato and Kouichiro.
** And on the villain side we have Bibidebi(perhap one-sided) with Shibolena.
* SkySurfing: The Megarangers ride around on hoverboards called the Cyber Sliders. Mega Silver has a modified version, the Auto Slider, that also transforms into a CoolBike.
* SpiritualSuccessor: To Series/DenshiSentaiDenziman. The series' share, among other things, the light-up foreheads of the ranger's helms and the hideous, twisted, asymmetrical look of the monsters.
** The fact that the heroes are high school students bring it closer to Series/KousokuSentaiTurboranger. See RecycledInSpace.
** Not to mention the fact that the main hero of the story was recruited by being good at a video game was also the driving plot of TheLastStarfighter (see XMeetsY below)
* SomethingAboutARose: One Neji monster was based on a rose, and it turned people into plant people. Turning Chisato's best friend into a plant person and laughing about it in her face is not a good idea, as Shibolena found out first hand.
* SuperPrototype: The Mega Silver suit, customized and fitted for actual battle, and noticeably more powerful than the Mega Ranger suits. Naturally, it has a 2.5 minute time limit.
* TakenForGranite: The AnkouAnglerfish Nejire Beast had this power.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler: After Yugande's power is reduced and he is almost killed by [=MegaRed=]'s Drill Saber, Shibolena runs in to take the damage instead.]]
* TankGoodness: The Digitank, the first Sentai tank (that isn't just a form or component of a mecha) since the Jack Tank in Series/JAKQDengekitai.
* TechMarchesOn: Surprisingly averted; the writers predicted the rise of digital technology. For example, Chisato was a photographer who specialized in using digital cameras. In 1997.
** Red's and Pink's forehead symbols are outdated however, red's being a desktop PC with a CRT monitor, and pink's being a cellphone which looks more like a pocket calculator then modern phones.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: The Nejirangers do not get along, even though it's in their best interest to do so.
* TemptingFate: After Miku screwed up for the umpteenth time...
-->Chisato: Oh great. Now we just need a Nejirejia attack to complete the day!
-->*Digitizers ring*
-->Whole team: *sigh*
* ThemeNaming
** The surnames of the five main Megarangers (Date, Endoh, Namiki, Jogasaki and Imamura) form the word "DENJI".
** Keeping with their "twisted" theme, everyone in Nejiregia (including Nejiregia itself) is named after either the Japanese word for "to twist" or a synonym.
* ThemeTuneCameo: Kenta hums the shows theme song while riding his bike in episode 24.
* VillainSong: Shibolena has "The Blue Devil's Smile", and Bibidebi has "Bibi! Bibidebi da Debi".
* VillainousBreakdown: Neji Blue is particularly fixated on attacking his counterpart. When show up, he attacks his own teammates to get at them.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld
* WeaksauceWeakness: Yuusaku can only stay as Mega Silver for 2.5 minutes at a time .
* WhatTheHellTownspeople:
* TheWorfBarrage: When fighting Mad Guirail the Super Galaxy Mega is given a new uber attack. If anything it only pisses him off more.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Averted first in episode 50 when and later in Series/SeijuuSentaiGingaman vs. Megaranger, .
* XanatosGambit: Dr. Hinelar pulls off one of these late in the series, when [[spoiler:he decides that he wants to be the actual leader of Nejiregia, not just the de facto one. Thus, he creates the Nejirangers, secretly using Javious' life force as their power source. He knows full well the Megarangers will eventually kill the Nejirangers, so he made sure that when the Nejirangers die, the backlash kills Javious too. Hinelar succeeds, becoming the new BigBad. Until then, he had Pyscho Rangers working for him.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Hinelar(Silver and Purple), Shibolena(Blue) and(if you count) Bibidebi(Green)
* YouFailTheIQTest: In one episode Miku evolves into a genius with an IQ of 800.
** Which would make her a pretty good contender to join Volt, wouldn't it?
* ZettaiRyouiki: Chisato
** And, if tall boots count, Shibolena too.
