[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Beauty_and_the_Beast_CW_2859.jpg]]

A reboot/modern retelling of the 1987 TV series ''Series/BeautyAndTheBeast'' that debuted on Creator/TheCW in 2012.

Featuring Kristin Kreuk as Catherine, this version retains the UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity setting, but Catherine is a cop and Vincent (Jay Ryan) is a handsome human (save for a scar on his right cheek) who has super strength and speed as the result of a secret government project involving animal DNA. Whenever he gets [[HulkingOut angry]], he transforms into a violent and uncontrollable beast.

Was renewed for a third season.

!!Tropes used in the show:

* ActionGirl: Catherine.
* {{Adorkable}}: J.T., Cat, of all people, also has her moments.
* [[spoiler: AmnesiacLover: Vincent as of Season 2.]]
* AlliterativeName: Again, Catherine Chandler.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology[=/=]LEGOGenetics: The Muirfield experiment and Vincent's transformation.
* TheAtoner: Gabe.
** Subverted sadly when he becomes darker as the second season goes on, all in the name of "protecting Catherine." It finally blows up in everyone's faces when Gabe takes the beast serum and becomes a monster again, only this time his personality changed from misunderstood friendly loner to psychotic killer; he ends up killing one of Catherine's friends in cold blood. Later he murders Cat's FBI informant and comes close to killing J.T.
* BadassBaritone: Vincent thanks to his actor, Jay Ryan.
* BettyAndVeronica: In Season 1, Catherine (Veronica) and Alex (Betty) to Vincent (Archie).
** Later Season 2 has Catherine (Betty) and Tori (Veronica) to Vincent's Archie.
** Followed by Vincent (Veronica) and Gabe (Betty) to Catherine (Archie).
* BeastAndBeauty: Yeah.
* BetaCouple: [[spoiler: J.T. and Tess]] as of Season 2 Episode 16
* BigAppleSauce: Duh.
** Though it's filmed in Canada.
* BigDamnHeroes: Facilitated by how he hangs out spying on people, Vincent gets to play this rather frequently.
* TheBigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:In episode 14.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: Vincent is cursed with inhuman speed, strength and senses. The only downside is he gets a little vascular and his teeth get kind of funky. The glowing yellow eyes might sound freaky but the way they look in the show is actually just really cool.
* BreakTheCutie: Catherine, ''so much''. First her mom is murdered in front of her eyes, then she is almost killed herself, later [[spoiler:she loses who she believes is her father and Vincent gets kidnapped. When she finally finds him though, [[LaserGuidedAmnesia his memory of her is wiped.]]]]
-->'''Catherine:''' [[TearJerker I've lost so much. I can't lose you again, too.]]
** The same can be argued with Gabe. Season 1 portrays him as a guy who, like Vincent, never wanted to be a beast and only wanted to grow up normal; said beast powers ended up costing his mother's life. When he finally was rid of his curse and fell for the one person who can truly make him happy, his own jealously and Catherine's indecisiveness for who she truly wants to be with ends up costing his friendships with nearly everyone on the show, ending with him becoming a monster again, both outside...and in.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Gabe.
** Subverted when he takes the beast serum and transforms again.
** Forcibly invoked again when Catherine straps the Beast Negating Crystal on Gabe, turning him human and finally allowing them the chance to kill him.
* BusCrash: [[spoiler: Implied with Alex when "Claire"'s partner gets onto the bus in the seat behind her.]]
* ButNotTooForeign: Catherine and Heather are half-asian on their mother's side while their dad is caucasian.
* CatapultNightmare: Vincent has one in which his beast side comes out, uncontrollably, during an intimate moment with Cat, hurting her. He concludes they CantHaveSexEver.
* ChildhoodFriends: Vincent and J.T.
* DanceOfRomance: In episode 9.
* DeadpanSnarker: J.T. and Catherine's partner Tess. Gabe can be pretty good at this too when he wants to.
* DeathByOriginStory: Catherine's mother is murdered by two assassins.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Presently a case of "Female-On-Male Sexual Harassment Is Okay," but Tori's use of her pheromones on Vincent is treated as a non-issue. Catherine doesn't seem to see how ethically repugnant Tori's behavior was, because she's too focused on how much of Vincent's erratic behavior she's been letting slide. Were Tori a Tony and were Vincent a Veronica...
* {{Expy}}: The Beast mutates into a super-strong, overly aggressive monster, a little bit like TheHulk.
** He's also a handsome, brooding superhuman worried that his violent nature will harm the female lead, much like [[{{Literature/Twilight}} Edward Cullen]].
** Tess is similar to Edie from the original.
* DestructoNookie: Not as extreme as other examples, [[spoiler: but Vincent and Cat]] make a really big mess when they have sex.
* EnterStageWindow: Vincent enters Cat's apartment (or simply attracts her attention) mostly through her bedroom window.
* FairCop: Cat.
* FlashbackNightmare: Catherine has one of in season two's opener.
* FollowTheLeader: As stated above, Vincent is a lot like Edward Cullen and this show was likely made to appeal to ''Twilight'' fans.
* GenderBlenderName: Gabe's girlfriend, Tyler.
* GeniusBruiser: Vincent is not only super strong, he's also a former doctor.
* GenkiGirl: Heather.
* GovernmentConspiracy: Muirfield, the outfit behind the experiment. They want to recapture Vincent and circumstances suggest they may have been behind the murder of Catherine's mother.
* GutturalGrowler: Vincent.
* HeCleansUpNicely: When Vincent wears a tux in episode 9.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Evan]] in episode 18. Also an example of RedemptionEqualsDeath.
* HeelFaceTurn: Gabe, at the beginning of the second season when Cat "kills" his beast side.
** FaceHeelTurn: The progression of the season slowly culminated in Gabe turning insane due to his obsession from Cat and everyone turning against him, ending with him taking the beast serum and going around killing Catherine's closest friends.
* HulkingOut: Vincent's power.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Vincent spent ''ten years'' trying to find an cure.
-->'''Vincent''': I'm just helping out, okay? And for once, J.T., I almost feel normal.
** Gabe as well, though he took a more extreme method in trying to rid himself of the beast gene: killing Vincent and harnessing his DNA.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: What ends up happening to [[spoiler:Gabe]] to finally end his life.
* IOweYouMyLife: [[spoiler: Gabe]] to [[spoiler: Catherine,]] after the latter [[spoiler: revives him after being shot by Muirfield, [[BroughtDownToNormal curing him.]]]]
* KilledOffForReal: Evan and Tori. Later [[spoiler: Gabe]]
* JekyllAndHyde: Vincent and his "beast" personality.
* LastOfHisKind: Vincent was the only one to escape being terminated by Muirfield.
** [[spoiler: Subverted. As Gabe is later revealed to be an ''earlier'' generation of beast.]]
*** [[spoiler: Season 2 has Vincent on an mission of killing other beasts, one of which is revealed to be one of Vincent's military buddies who also thought he was the only one to survive.]]
* LivingLieDetector: Vincent can usually tell if someone is lying, using much the same metrics an interrogator with a mechanical polygraph would use: heart rate, pupil dilation, and perspiration.
* LongLostRelative: [[spoiler:Vincent's]] nephew, Aaron, makes an appearance.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Gabe, full stop. What first started as trying to make amends for his actions in Season 1 has evolved into having deeper feelings for Cat. While several characters such as Tess was supportive of him trying to hook up with her, others like J.T. and, later, an amnesiac Vincent kept pushing for Cat to stay away from him. Despite Gabe finally hooking up with Cat during the middle of Season 2, Cat's former feelings for Vincent ended up costing their relationship. It doesn't help when Gabe then starts believing that only ''he'' deserves Cat and that Cat's father is constantly encouraging Gabe to take matters into his own hands and keep Vincent and Cat apart. Later actions such as getting Cat's sister kidnapped, threatening to expose everyone's secrets to the world, and murdering people left and right started driving Gabe slowly insane, ending with him becoming a beast again. [[spoiler: Gabe's sanity becomes non-existent when the heroes manage to defeat him, ending with him trying to murder ''Cat'' and dying in the process.]]
* MissingMom: Catherine's mother was murdered in front of her when she was younger, and it drove her to become a police officer.
* MixedAncestry: Catherine and Heather's mother was Asian-American, while their father is white [[spoiler: though Catherine's biological father turns out to be someone different than she thought]], reflecting Kristen Kreuk's actual ancestry.
* MythologyGag: Since it's a reboot, it's to be expected. The AbsurdlySpaciousSewer that Vincent and J.T. hide out in is reminiscent of the original.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: Gabe, as revealed in season two's opener]].
* OnlySaneMan: J.T.
* PapaWolf: Reynolds seems to be this, unbeknownst to Cat.
* PutOnABus:
** [[spoiler:Alex,]] and [[spoiler:Joe.]]
** As of Season two, it seems [[spoiler: Heather]] as well.
* RescueRomance:
** Catherine and Vincent bond over the fact that he saved her from her mother's assassins years earlier. She reciprocates by helping to protect Vincent from detection/recapture by Muirfield.
** It's also implied with Gabe to Catherine.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Heather and Cat.
* RunningGag: Vincent and J.T. have a security system that can also shut down all wireless signals... if Vincent remembers to turn it on.
** Tess getting J.T.'s name wrong like "T.J.".
* SanitySlippage: Gabe's love for Catherine has twisted into an obsession. Lampshaded by both J.T. and Tess when they comment on Gabe's state of mind. [[spoiler: Thrown out the window when he becomes a beast and turns into nothing more than a rampaging murderer out for blood, even Cat's.]]
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: All the beasts in the show have their eyes glow an ominous yellow color; characters in the show who witness this piss themselves in fear as a result.
* SuperSoldier: Vincent's "beast" form was given to him by military scientists during his time in the army. [[UpToEleven Played even straighter]] after [[spoiler: he's kidnapped and "reprogrammed" to follow orders [[NoQuestionsAsked without question.]]]]
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: What Gabe feels has happened to him. "Losing" Cat to Vincent, having nearly everyone turned against him, and then having Cat tell him straight to his face that she wants nothing more to do with him anymore threw Gabe's morality off the cliff. By this time, he took the beast transforming formula and once more became the very thing he tried so hard to rid himself off in Season One; if everyone is going to treat him like a deranged beast, then he might as well ''be'' that deranged beast.
* TitleDrop: "About Last Night".
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler: JT]] is revealed to be this as he [[spoiler: was the one who had Vincent signed up for the Muirfield project, thinking it would help him on the battlefield]].
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: Alex. [[spoiler: Eventually subverted, when Alex is PutOnABus.]]
* WasOnceAMan: Played Straight.
--> Vincent: I guess it reminds me of who I use to be.
-->Catherine: [[{{Averted}} An doctor?]]
-->Vincent: [[{{Subverted}} Human.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: There has been no mention of Brooke, Heather and Cat's stepmother, especially after [[spoiler: their dad's death]].
* WhamLine: In the season one finale when [[spoiler: Vincent is captured and taken via net and helicopter]].:
--> [[spoiler: '''Reynolds''': Don't shoot [Catherine], [[LukeIAmYourFather She's my daughter.]]]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Vincent, the original beasts from his army unit, and some later beasts like Tori, were all average, well-meaning citizens who had their normalcy ripped away by monsters like Reynolds and Muirfield in their attempt to create the perfect supersoldier. When the experiment went wrong, rather than try to help and harness their power like Catherine's mom tried to do, the assholes would rather wipe them from existence and cover up their mistakes; a sad case of shoot first, ask questions never.
* YankTheDogsChain: So freakin' much.
* YourCheatingHeart: Tess is having an affair with her married boss, Joe.
** As of Season 2 Episode 15, [[spoiler: Cat cheats on Gabe with Vincent.]]
