A long time ago, the three gods, Luminara, Kronis and Cha'Tanoth, created a beautiful world, a world in which a fascinating continent now rests known as [[TitleDrop Tel Anar]]. Many wars have been fought over the ancient land, either in the name of the gods or simply for territory, but for now at least, the world is at peace. Civilisations, be they as ancient as the Elves' or as new and fresh as the Fairies', dominate the land, with one of the only pieces of common ground being the Adventurer's Institute. After signing the Adventurer's Charter long ago, a being of any race may join the Institute to become an adventurer in their own right, seeking fame and fortune from the scorching heat of The Badlands to the frozen tundra of The Forgottens!

Will you be among them?

In short, [[http://talesoftelanar.b1.jcink.com/index.php?act=idx Tales of Tel Anar]] is a play-by-post fantasy roleplaying forum. !Examples of Tropes found in the forum:
* AnnoyingArrows: Astranza Talielo, the Queen of the Wood Elves, sure has a lot of arrows...
* BishieSparkle: Invoked by Haakon, an ORC.
* BloodKnight: Elizabeth Avenell, otherwise known as the Morning Star. She is one of the King of Elon's most powerful knights, and if she's sent to take you down, it's likely you'll be left an unrecognizable, gory mess once she's done with you.
** Also a rather prominent stereotype for Orcs, although this isn't [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy without reason]].
* BoisterousBruiser: Haakon the Orc bard. Lots of his dialogue is shouted, and he just loves to have fun! He's also massive and muscular.
** Gustav I Phoenix, the King of Elon, otherwise just known as The King, has shades of this, too.
* ButtMonkey: Prince Artullian Emanuelle Talielo, brother of Queen Astranza of the Wood Elves. He's had SEVERAL mishaps:
** Haakon beat him in a grape juice drinking contest, and now jokes abound about him being unable to handle his grape juice, along with him periodically vomiting grape juice.
** He's terrified of breasts, due to an incident as a teenager.
** His sister, the Queen of the Wood Elves, said that she HATED him in front of Elizabeth and Gustav. She also constantly calls him a 'disappointment'.
** "It's almost as if the world is just taking one giant collective shit upon me..."
* ChivalrousPervert: Haakon. Haakon, Haakon, Haakon. He drools and nose-bleeds all over the place if he sees a pretty girl, but will do anything to save his friends from harm.
* ClusterFBomb: Elizabeth. We haven't exactly counted, but it's probable that over ninety percent of the instances of the word 'fuck' being used come from her.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Jekkhret the Fairy! She may be a grotesque bug creature, but she's incredibly shy, polite, and just plain adorable. She's also mentioned to enjoy juice boxes.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Most magic is this, thanks to the negative effects of casting spells too much, but Tier Ten takes the cake since it makes you [[DeaderThanDead very, very dead]].
* DualWielding: Emily Flute wields two steel swords custom made for her own use.
* ElementalPowers: A few magic system utilise the elements, with the most notable being Wizard magic. The current elements are [[PlayingWithFire fire]], [[MakingASplash water]], [[ShockAndAwe lightning]], [[DishingOutDirt earth]], [[LightEmUp li]][[WhiteMagic ght]], [[PoisonousPerson poison]], [[BlowYouAway air]] and [[AnIcePerson ice]].
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: Tel Anar usually avoids making blatant ones pretty well, but there are a few references to real world cultures here and there. These examples are all very debatable.
** The High Elves (and other Elves in general) speak a Finnish-like language, but the High Elves also have a palace in their city that has a resemblance to the Eiffel Tower. They're also known for being particularly [[FrenchJerk snooty.]] JM has admitted that he compares the High Elves to rich Connecticut socialites, among other things.
** The Fairy Hive looks like a pyramid, and Fairy swords look a lot like Egyptian Khopesh. A lot of them appear to wear headscarves, as well.
** A new race, the R'Talahai, also have some Egyptian influence, but also have quite a bit of Zulu traits, as well, specifically their throwing spears and shields, along with their way of dressing.
** Elon (The homeland of the Humans)is an economic and military powerhouse comparable to the modern United States, with a lot of standard Medieval England thrown in for good measure.
** Orcs are a strange mix of several warlike cultures from around the world, metal-heads, and surfers.
** The Nychterida, a race of bat-people, are an people who are based off of Japanese shamanism and Shinto; they recently lost their home due to the warring of a neighboring country. Their homeland has been destroyed, and now they are traveling to Tel Anar to start a new life. The are as a race bred from nobility, and now need to start anew, but they persevere and adapt to new situations well. They are best represented by Lucedraeu who is an example of a TragicHero and his FatalFlaw is his guilt for his people's loss and for loosing track of their Prince to whom he was the bodyguard.
* FantasyWorldMap: [[http://i.imgur.com/sVkg2hH.jpg One is in the works.]]
* FatAndProud : Rik Naamio is certainly not unhappy about his belly, and is often the first to joke about it amongst pretty much anyone.
* FieryRedhead: Elizabeth certainly fits this trope to a T.
* FragileSpeedster: Emily Flute is pretty much this, as although she can dish out a decent amount of damage and has pretty good reflexes, she can't take many hits before keeling over.
* TheGoodKing: The King of Elon! He genuinely cares about his people, and strives to do his best as a ruler.
* GreyAndGrayMorality: None of the races and factions in Tel Anar are truly good or truly evil.
** While the Elves are often looked upon as a 'good' or 'Luminara-aligned' race, they have a completely genocidal attitude towards Vampires, as do the Werewolves.
** Fairies were created by Kronis, however, they generally seem to be one of the friendlier races we've seen, unless the topic of Spidren is brought up.
** The Spidren are viewed as genocidal monsters by the Fairies, however, Fairies are a major food source for the Spidren.
** As for individual characters, Elizabeth is on the side of what can loosely be considered the good guys. She also swears a lot, can be quite rude and mean to other people, and doesn't hesitate to kill people when she needs to.
** Haakon is an Orc, generally considered one of the 'evil' or 'Kronis-alligned' races, but he enthusiastically supports the side of what can be considered 'good'.
*** TL;DR, It doesn't matter what race you are, or which god you serve, it depends on the perspective of individual characters.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Leonard kills someone with a shovel.
* InstrumentOfMurder: Haakon's axe lute is certainly nothing to be trifled with.
* LargeHam: Haakon, and just about any other Orc in general.
** Skullshatter, the Chieftain of the Orc-Goblin-Troll Alliance, is the LARGEST of hams.
** Gregor, the Job Master of the Elon Adventurer's Institute, certainly comes close with his '''BOLD TEXT'''.
* TheLoonie: Considering one of the ADMINS (JM95, known as EpicJM on Website/TVTropes) has Loonie tendencies, there are several instances where HilarityEnsues.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Mostly standard Western dragons, but with quite a few more elements than just [[KillItWithFire fire]] which are not free to play for everyone, for [[GameBreaker good reason]].
* OurElvesAreDifferent: The High Elves love to remind everyone how much better they are than everyone else.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: [[http://i.imgur.com/PsfRE8zl.jpg I'd say so.]] The Fairies of Tel Anar are taller than humans on average, live out near the Badlands, and possess a HiveMind.
* MagicAIsMagicA: All the magic systems are organised into Tiers and have consistent effects depending on the spell.
* MagicMusic: Bard spells, of course!
* MarionetteMaster: Most Tiers of Puppeteering are like this, though some of the higher Tiers delve into [[PeoplePuppets something else]].
* MusicalAssassin: While Bards aren't really known for direct attacks with their instruments, certain ones (such as Haakon's axe lute) would allow you to play like this, if you so desired.
* NonElemental: While there are a few magic systems that are like this, the Tier Nine Wizard spells called Scission are [[StuffBlowingUp rather destructive]].
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: This is how Orcs are often stereotypically seen, when they're not too busy being psychopathic [[BloodKnight Blood Knights]].
* RaisedAsTheOppositeGender: Elizabeth was raised as a boy because her noble parents already had a daughter and were too old to try again to produce a male heir. She literally believed she was a boy, and that as a teenager, her breasts were pecs. Artullian, her knight training buddy as a child, pointed out that those were definitely NOT pecs, causing the both of them much trauma. Now, however, she's much more comfortable knowing she's a woman.
* RedShirtArmy: Elon's army literally has a section of the army called Red Tunics, who are this to a T.
* ShoutOut: Several.
** [[Manga/FairyTail Haakon's tendency to complement Emily on her 'nice body'.]]
** The Fairies came from JM watching ''Film/District9'' one time too many.
** Some of Elizabeth's mannerisms are based on those of Revy from ''Manga/BlackLagoon''.
** The King of Elon looks quite a bit like Music/DaveGrohl.
** Most of the stuff on the site is probably inspired from ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings'' or ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' in some sort of way.
** At one point, Emily comes across a species she hasn't seen yet, says "[[VideoGame/{{Pokemon}} Who's that Pokémon?]]" and pulls out her Species of Tel Anar book.
*** Kain Nightwatch throws a red crystal, and an Elven warrior pops out of it! Jokes about the crystal being a Poké Ball were had.
** Jekkhret the Fairy has some elements of her personality based off of that of [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Fluttershy]].
* TotallyRadical: This is how Haakon the Orc talks. Actually, Haakon is this personified. He loves pizza and surfing, and often punctuates his dialogue with surfer lingo.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Elizabeth and Leonard both have romantic feelings for one another, but especially Elizabeth has trouble making her feelings known.
* ZergRush: The general strategy of the Orcs of the past, especially in The Draconic War.
