Film watched: ''Film/DangerDeathRay''

Featured in season 6 of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000,'' it's clear Mike and the 'Bots had a blast with this one.

The episode is available in the Gizmoplex [[https://www.gizmoplex.com/mst3k/season:6/videos/mst3k-139-dangerdeathray here]].

!!The Segments:
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder: Prologue ]]

* Crow shows off his new contact lenses. They're highly uncofmortable and require constant moisture, but it's a small price to pay for 20/20 vision.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Segment 1 ]]

* Frank has opened up a talent agency, having already paid Tom to endorse designer sneakers despite his lack of feet. He's not interested in Crow's screenplays, since studios all over town have been making their own versions of his past works. While Mike tears into Frank for his new attitude, Frank admits that he wants to book Mike for a hefty-paying tour of ''Theatre/AnythingGoes''. Dr. Forrester kills all the deals and shuts Frank down.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Segment 2 ]]

* Servo has finished building his own death ray "for peaceful purposes", but he just can't resist blasting Crow with it. Even though he's charred to a crisp, Crow can't help but see the humor in it, either.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Segment 3 ]]

* Servo hosts "This Is Your Life", with Mike as the special guest. He's reunited with Crow, several times over.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Segment 4 ]]

* Inspired by the cool shades in today's film, Crow presents his new line of "manly" Italian designer sunglasses, insisting they're strictly for men. Definitely nothing woman-y about them, especially the pair with heart-shaped lenses and the pair that says "WOMAN" on top.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Segment 5 ]]

* Before Mike can read a letter, Cambot weeps over all the innocent video cameras destroyed in the movie's climax, prompting Mike to comfort him. Frank gets his glamor shot in the mail and shows it off to Dr. F.

!!The [=MST3K=] presentation of ''Film/DangerDeathRay'' provides examples of:
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Crow eventually sees the humour in his being fried by Servo's new death ray - at least until his head bursts into flames.
* BondOneLiner: Generally averted, much to the annoyance of Mike and the 'Bots. They give grudging approval to "He went for a swim".
* CallBack:
** Servo's love of Macintosh computers from ''[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S03E04GameraVsBarugon Gamera Vs. Barugon]]''.
--->'''Mike:''' ''[dismissively]'' Macintosh equipment.\\
'''Servo:''' ''[brightly]'' Ooh, [=McIntosh=]! Nice tube amp, good quality... ''[Bart Fargo smashes the transmitter]'' HEY!
** Mike: "[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S06E14SanFranciscoInternational That nose wheel feels mushy.]]"
** Mike's very familiar with sailor suits, as seen in ''[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S05E19Outlaw Outlaw]]''.
* CelebrityResemblance:
** Mike: "[[UsefulNotes/AbrahamLincoln Abe Lincoln]] ''[[ActorISTheTitleCharacter is]]'' ''Film/{{Timecop}}''!"
** The villainous Frank (in the movie) is described as looking like the child of Creator/MichaelCaine and Wrestling/AndreTheGiant.
* ComedicSociopathy: Tom Servo builds his own Death Ray for ''peaceful purposes'' and then uses it on Crow. Crow does have to admit that it was ActuallyPrettyFunny... that is, until [[IncendiaryExponent his head catches fire]].
* ContinuityNod: At the airport, Mike and the Bots hum a piece of music from ''Film/TheStarfighters''.
** Crow's script "Earth vs. Soup" has been mentioned before in past episodes and would be mentioned again in later ones (it even gets made (sorta) in a later one). His other script, "Peter Graves Goes to the University of Minnesota" is also brought up.
** Mike's sailor suit (which he always wears when performing, whether the role calls for it or not) was last mentioned in ''[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S05E19Outlaw Outlaw of Gor]]''.
** Among Frank's clients in his talent agency is [[Creator/ColemanFrancis Coleman Francis]] of ''[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S06E09TheSkydivers The Skydivers]]'' and ''[[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S06E19RedZoneCuba Red Zone Cuba]]'' "fame", and [[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S04E24ManosTheHandsOfFate Torgo]] appears hoping to sign on with him.
* CrackPairing [[invoked]] to describe one of the bad guys: "If [[Creator/MichaelCaine Michael Caine]] and [[Wrestling/AndreTheGiant André the Giant]] had a child."
* DestroyTheSecurityCamera: The climax of the movie involves the hero destroying multiple cameras. This greatly upsets Cambot, who feels sorry for all those innocent cameras getting killed, and leads to one of the rare moments where he actually reacts to the movie, starting to cry, [[CameraAbuse tears covering his lens]].
* EarWorm: Mike and the bots hum the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0J0XuaG5MM main theme]] constantly throughout the episode.
* EyeScream: Crow's contact lenses do NOT look comfortable.
* HandWave: When a viewer asks Servo why his head can't be seen through in the theater (note, the puppet used is actually painted black):
-->'''Tom Servo: '''Chuck, it's because of physics.
* HollywoodAtlas:
-->'''Crow:''' What country is this taking place in?\\
'''Mike:''' Europe.
* HypocriticalHumor:
** Mike chastises Frank for refusing to produce Crow's scripts, saying he wants nothing to do with him, until Frank reveals he's booked him to tour in Music/ColePorter's ''Theatre/AnythingGoes'' for a hefty sum, after which Mike is seen wearing a sailor suit and singing songs from the musical. (At least it's appropriate this time, and not, say, ''Theatre/OhCalcutta'')
** When Mike enters the theater still wearing his sailor suit, Servo castigates him, telling him, "Look at you. You look ridiculous." This while Servo is still wearing a Reebok on his head.
* InherentlyFunnyWords: "Bart Fargo Bart Fargo Bart Fargo Bart Fargo!"
* InsistentTerminology: Crow's manly sunglasses are '''''for men'''''. Especially the pink rhinestone-studded glasses with heart-shaped lenses with the word "WOMAN" on top.
* InsultBackfire:
-->'''Forrester:''' Frank... you look like a slut.\\
'''TV's Frank:''' ''[gleefully]'' Do I, really?
* ItWillNeverCatchOn: Frank refuses to get involved with Steven ([[Creator/StevenSpielberg Spielberg]]), David (Creator/{{Geffen|Records}}), and Jeffrey (Katzenberg)'s [[Creator/DreamWorksSKG project]] -- he hadn't seen any of their resumes and has no idea what they've done.
* KickTheDog:
** Frank out and out crushes Crow's dreams of being a screenwriter when explaining why he won't be picking up his scripts. And when Mike attempts to [[WhatTheHellHero chew Frank out in response]], the literal ''moment'' Frank informs him he's been booked for ''Theatre/AnythingGoes'', Mike's decked out in a sailor suit and belting out "You're the Top" in no time flat.
** One segment sees Tom blast Crow with his own personal death ray. Why? Well, it was too tempting ''not'' to, of course!
* LamePunReaction: Subverted when Mike elicits laughs from the bots with "Lattice in!"
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound: [[invoked]] Crow's constant giggling during the SpecialEffectsFailure.
* PoliceAreUseless:
-->'''Mike:''' THERE! We made them ''swerve'' slightly.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: "And the way you dove out that window, just ''terrible''."
* {{Running Gag}}s
** "DANGER! [fill in the blank]"
--->'''Servo:''' DANGER! Twist tie!\\
'''Servo:''' DANGER! Small talk!\\
'''Servo:''' DANGER! Birth control pills!
** Mocking the ''DEATH'' ray being used for only ''peaceful'' purposes.
** Mike and the 'Bots singing along with the soundtrack and adding lyrics from similar tunes where appropriate.
---> '''All:''' [[Music/HerbieHancock WATERMELON MAAAAAAAAN!]]
** Jokes about Scarface and his resemblance to a [[UsefulNotes/AbrahamLincoln certain president:]]
--->'''Mike:''' Abe Lincoln is Film/{{Timecop}}!\\
'''Crow:''' I want UsefulNotes/JeffersonDavis DEAD! I want his family DEAD!\\
'''Mike:''' Ohh, I've got a ''rail-splitting'' headache!
** The SpecialEffectsFailure[[invoked]] leads to open giggling by the crew.
--->'''Mike:''' [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial Honest-to-goodness REAL, NOT toy helicopter.]]\\
'''Mike:''' ''[on seeing the toy submarine]'' The Ti-D-Bowl Man is doing pretty alright for himself!\\
'''Servo:''' They're coming up for more baking soda.\\
''[Crow openly giggles at length]''\\
'''Mike:''' Ah, the ocean is beautiful in this side of the tub.\\
'''Servo:''' This set is at least three box tops.\\
'''Crow:''' Special effects by Billy!\\
'''Mike:''' [[BlatantLies These are NOT toys!]]
** A dramatic drumroll followed by Servo quipping, "THIS MAN will compete...!"
* SoundtrackDissonance: Lampshaded.
-->'''Servo''': ''["bup-a-dup-a-da-da" is playing]'' This isn't appropriate right now. His friend is dying over there.
* {{Squick}}: Invoked. Mike and the 'bots reaction when the characters order a double Cointreau at the bar. For the uninitiated, Cointreau is an orange liqueur that may be tasty in a margarita, but straight is pretty bitter, especially neat. Although for what it's worth, Bart Fargo seems to have ordered that bottle specifically so he could take a good look at the villain about to attack him in the reflection. It doesn't seem as if he actually finished his drink.
* ShoutOut:
** The first time the opening riff of the "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weoVHTxOr5s Tough Talk]]" sound-alike plays (the one they keep referring to as "Watermelon Man"), Mike sings along with the ''equally'' sound-alike "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?" by Music/TheLovinSpoonful.
** And of course, the reference to "Watermelon Man" itself, with a direct nod at one point to its composer, Music/HerbieHancock.
* StylisticSuck: "Yes, Mike Nelson, [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Your_Life this is your life!]]" Servo hosts; the only person they could find from Mike's past is Crow.
* TakeThat:
** The whole "Frank is a Hollywood agent" reflects the dealings Best Brains were having with interested parties from La-La Land.
** Segment 4 suggests that Italian-style sunglasses might come across as a little woman-y for American tastes, [[InsistentTerminology but they're for men]], Crow insists.
* {{Tearjerker}}: For Cambot, at least. Fargo's camera-destroying at the end of the film causes Cambot to start crying, [[InterfaceScrew blurring our view of the last host segment.]]
* TechnicalPacifist:
-->'''Servo:''' Ah, so it's a ''peace-loving '''DEATH RAY'''''.
* ThrowItIn: [[invoked]] Crow's eyes and head weren't supposed to blaze as they did, but Trace Beaulieu's improvised screaming was so funny they kept the take.[[note]]The full take can be seen on the "Poopie" collection; the broadcast edit cuts to logo before Jim Mallon pops up on-screen to extinguish him, and fades the audio over crackling sounds before Kevin's laughter trails off. Trace, still in character, mutters about being in his trailer.[[/note]]
* TongueTwister: [="BartFargoBartFargoBartFargo..."=] On one of the instances, Crow messes up and laughs.
-->'''Crow:''' [[InherentlyFunnyWords I just like doing it!]] ''[sighs]''
* YourHeadASplode: After being shot in the head with Servo's death ray.
-->'''Crow:''' I gotta admit, it ''is'' pretty funny... ''[{{everybody laughs|Ending}}... until Crow's eyes and head completely burst into flame, causing him to scream and laugh at the same time]''
