''Shin Lupin III'': '''Frankenstein attacks Lupin'''.

Lupin’s gang is scuba diving in the Mediterranean Sea, looking for the location of the lost treasure of Captain Kidd, when their hunt is interrupted by a group of strange masked divers who attack them, making off with the treasure. Jigen shows them a flipper lost by one of the assailant with a mark that reveals the true nature of their opponents: the infamous Red Ghosts! Back in their hideout, Lupin and Jigen are joined by Fujiko when they discuss this phantom gang which has already taken several treasures from under their noses with ease, and they bring up the rumors of their usage of shamanism and necromancy.

According to Fujiko, they have developed a secret ray gun which can be used to summon the spirit of a deceased person in the body of his descendants, which is how they found out about Kidd’s treasure, and furthermore Fujiko speculates that their next target could be another descendant of a famous thief: their friend Goemon. Somewhere in the woods, Goemon is attacked by the wolves controlled by a woman from the Red Ghosts and is soon captured and taken to their hideout. There they use their soul gun to summon the ghost of Goemon Ishikawa the first, and force him to possess his descendant, asking him to recover one of the last treasures he stole in life: the golden Rosenkreuz Pot. Meanwhile, Lupin’s gang is after them, with Jigen explaining that the Red Ghosts have a long history behind: they first appeared in the middle ages as a secret society lead by the infamous doctor Frankenstein, who used his knowledge of necromancy and technology to bring the famous Monster to life. The cult’s plan was to use the Monster’s power to increase their grip on the world, but during a fierce battle a knight shoot the creature with a holy bullet, causing his soul to leave his body, and then put the runaway soul inside the precious Rosenkreuz Pot. This was not the end of the Red Ghosts, who made other appearances in the shadows (they were said to be aiding Hitler himself) and Jigen speculates that they want to get their hands on the pot to recover the Monster’s soul and revive him.

In fact, in the Red Ghosts’ car, Goemon explains that back when he was alive, he secretly left Japan on a Christian ship and went to Rome, where he infiltrated the Vatican and stole the Rosenkreuz Pot from the Pope’s treasury. He then managed to return to Japan where he was captured by Hideyoshi and executed, but before his death he managed to hide the golden Pot in a Buddhist temple. Despite some minor inconvenience due to encountering the Red Ghosts’ trained wolves and Zenigata, our heroes manage to meet Goemon in the temple as he’s revealing the Rosenkreuz Pot, hidden the Great Buddha’s finger, but their friend is now controlled by his more ruthless ancestor and they’re forced to flee from his deadly attacks. As they try to follow them by car, they’re gunned down by an helicopter driven by the mastermind of the Red Ghosts, Dr. Frankenstein the 15th. Having recovered the pot, the Red Ghosts and Goemon return to their island base where the Monster’s lifeless body is kept in a lab, ready to be awakened. As Lupin’s group, having survived Frankenstein’s ambush, lands on the island, having used a tracking device to follow them. They are too late, however, as the Rosenkreuz Pot is put in the reviving machine along with the Monster and the soul soon returns to the body. Before the doctor’s eyes, the Monster is, once again, alive. Having detected the presence of Lupin’s group on the island via cameras, Frankenstein gives the creature its first order in centuries: dispose of the intruders! As the group reaches the gates of the lab, the Monster emerges, and before is incredible strength and its immunity to mundane weapons, our heroes are powerless to stop him.

Desperate, Jigen suggest that only the Zantetsuken may prove useful against the revenant behemoth and they make a dash for the structure, with the lumbering abomination following them. However, the trio doesn’t make far into the lab, as they’re soon confronted by Frankenstein, his female assistant and a still- possessed Goemon, and soon the Monster is behind them. In trap, Jigen manages to get his hands on the woman’ soul gun and shoot at Goemon, exorcising him from the ghost of his ancestor. As the Monster is manhandling our heroes, Jigen desperately calls at the samurai, who tosses his Zantetsuken at the creature, stabbing it squarely in the heart and causing his soul to leave the body. With the loss of his soul, the Monster goes berserk and in his wrath grabs both his creator and his henchwoman and drag them across a door in the lab’s weapon storage room. As our heroes flee for their lives, Frankenstein tries to shoot his crazed creation, but a stray shot ignites the explosives and everything is consumed by an ocean of flames, with the Monster gone for good. As Lupin and his gang witness the end of the Red Ghosts, Jigen explains that he remembered that Zantetsuken was said to be able to purify unclean beings, hence be able to stop the maddened monster.
