In flashbacks, Michael consults his lawyer about Susan's request for him to give up his paternal rights. The lawyer warns Michael that he will have a costly uphill struggle for custody. In a deposition, Susan's lawyer browbeats Michael over not knowing anything about his son. Afterwards, Susan tells Michael privately that she thinks he's going to win if their case goes to court, and asks him to give up for Walt's sake. Michael reluctantly agrees, and says goodbye to Walt.

At the hatch, Kate disappears in a flash of light, and Locke follows her down. He finds her, and Desmond holds both of them at gunpoint. Desmond makes Locke tie Kate's hands behind her back and lock her in a closet. He discreetly slips her a pocket knife, which she uses to cut herself free. She crawls into an air vent. When an alarm sounds, Desmond forces Locke to enter the Numbers into the computer and press the execute button. A countdown clock flips back to 108 minutes. Desmond hears Jack's arrival, and drags Locke out at gunpoint, while Kate watches from the vent.

In the ocean, Sawyer finds Michael and drags him to a piece of driftwood. The two argue, with Michael blaming Sawyer for Walt's kidnapping. Sawyer removes the bullet lodged in his shoulder with his bare hands. They eventually float up to a beach, where Jin comes running out of the jungle, shouting "Others!" They are approached by a sinister-looking group of strangers.

!Tropes in this episode include:
* AirVentPassageway: Kate finds one in the Hatch closet, and uses it to get around the Hatch and observe Jack's arrival and confrontation with Desmond.
* AmoralAttorney: Susan's lawyer during the proceedings is just as despicable as she is.
* BatDeduction: Sawyer tells Michael that he got a good look at the boat and believes it must have come from the Island. After all, Danielle said the Others were coming for the kid...except Sawyer was already gone by then.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Sawyer is initially dismissive of the shark swimming around them, saying "it's only a shark." Michael is not as comforted.
* {{Cliffhanger}}: Michael and Sawyer return to the island, only to find Jin running out of the jungle while screaming "Others!" And then a group of menacing people approach.
* ContinuityNod: Michael gives Walt a stuffed [[Recap/LostS01E02PilotPart2 polar bear]] toy when he says goodbye to him at the park.
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Sawyer uses CPR to revive Michael after pulling him from the water. Michael wakes up quickly and only coughs a little afterwards.
* DavidVsGoliath: Michael's lawyer namedrops this by admitting that he's obviously the best Michael can afford and the case is going to be an uphill battle. Susan privately tells him that he's going to win, but convinces him to just drop it and let Walt go.
* GeorgeLucasAlteredVersion: When the episode first reaired, a view of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center was added from the office of Michael's lawyer, in order to better establish the timeframe of the flashbacks.
* ItsAllMyFault: Michael says this, telling Sawyer that he shouldn't have brought Walt on the raft.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While Susan seems to put in some emotional manipulation, she does have a point that Michael is not in a position to care for Walt since he still has physical therapy and is not stable financially.
* ManipulativeBitch: Susan and her lawyers twist every instance of Michael agreeing to her demands to make him look like a negligent absent father.
* OhCrap: Charlie makes this face when he sees Claire idly looking at his Virgin Mary statue, unaware that it's full of heroin.
* OnceMoreWithClarity: Jack's arrival in the Hatch and confrontation with Desmond are shown again, this time from Locke and Kate's perspective, revealing that Kate was watching from an air vent.
* SmugSnake: Lizzy Calloway, Susan's lawyer, comes across as even more smug than she is. She even uses the fact that Michael doesn't know Walt's first words against him.
* SweetTooth: While climbing out of the pantry, Kate sees a box of candy bars, takes a bite out of one, and stuffs several more into her pants.
* TallyMarksOnThePrisonWall: While being escorted by Desmond, Locke and Kate see a wall covered with tally marks. According to the production designer, there were ''9,000'' marks on the wall, which, if they were meant to represent days, would be going back to 1980, around when the Hatch was built.
* ThreateningShark: Sawyer and Michael are attacked by a shark attracted by the blood from Sawyer's shoulder while floating in the ocean. Michael shoots it dead.
* UngratefulBastard: Michael has a right to be angry, but he lashes out at Sawyer WHO GOT SHOT trying to protect them all. He’s even upset that Sawyer’s bleeding drew a shark to them.
* WeHaveToGetTheBulletOut: Sawyer removes a bullet from his shoulder with his bare hands. Deconstructed, since his wound starts bleeding a lot worse after he does this, and becomes infected in subsequent episodes.
