Green and Briscoe investigate the disappearance of political aide Lisa Edwards. Since there's no evidence of foul play, the detectives look into her background. They learn that she had a history of affairs with older, wealthy, married men and was currently seeing another such man. Lisa's body is discovered, and now the case is a murder investigation. Her autopsy reveals she was pregnant and may have been killed to keep the affair secret. The [=DA=]'s office follows the trail to Ted Weldon, the chair of the State Gaming Board. Southerlyn discovers that Weldon has had many affairs with much younger women and uses his friend, small-time crook Mickey Bastone, to intimidate them into keeping quiet.

Bastone confesses that Weldon paid him to kill Lisa, and Weldon is charged with first degree murder, risking the death penalty. However, the case against him is undermined because Bastone states he wasn't explicitly told to kill Lisa - just to "take care of her." The [=DA=]'s office also can't prove Weldon paid Bastone. Lewin suggests that by calling one of Weldon's previous mistresses as a witness, his wife could be persuaded to implicate him. Mrs. Weldon says she knew about the affair and Lisa's pregnancy, so she had been looking for evidence to use in a divorce case. She produces a banking slip showing a withdrawal of $10,000 from her son's college fund - the same amount of money Bastone is supposed to have received.

In court, Weldon denies everything, until [=McCoy=] produces the banking slip and evidence of Weldon forging his son's signature. Weldon is found guilty and sentenced to life, but then Southerlyn notices that the banking slip matches Mrs. Weldon's handwriting on a bail form for her husband. Mrs. Weldon confidently says that the [=DA=]'s office will not want to throw out Weldon's conviction, and it will take time before he's allowed to appeal.
