Fraser returns from a vacation in Canada to find that 1) someone is impersonating Ray, and 2) his apartment building has been burned down by a performance arsonist, whose calling card is to leave dozens of little toy ducks at the scene.

!!Tropes:
* BulletproofVest: Ray K wields one, which leads to him TakingTheBullet when Greta tries to kill Fraser.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Benton and Ray K continue to bicker over whether the latter is actually the original Ray... while their car is on fire and driving through the Chicago streets, having been rigged to go up by Greta.
* CelebrityParadox: Buck Frobisher's resemblance to "legendary Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen" is remarked upon. Fraser's comment that Nielsen had never won the Order of Canada was true when the episode aired, but no longer.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: The B-plot is fueled by Benton conducting his own surreptitious investigation of "Ray's" identity, up to and including pulling dental records and fingerprints from the latter, while Ray's co-workers all keep up the charade by repeatedly lying to Benton's face. At the end of the episode, Welsh admits that Ray V is undercover, meaning the whole enterprise could have been avoided if Welsh and the others told the truth to Benton, who likely would have gone along with it (as he realizes at the end of the episode) if he knew from the jump.
* {{Determinator}}: Benton's dogged pursuit of an armed criminal leads to him jumping off a high ridge in order to impede the boat the criminal is escaping in, and soon after, manages to arrest him after both have gone off the InevitableWaterfall.
--> '''RCMP Inspector:''' [[LetMeGetThisStraight Let me just go over the details]]... you were in pursuit of this individual for roughly six-and-a-half days, over... looks at route on map) 1,700 kilometres of deep wilderness, in pursuit of an individual you suspected was guilty of...
--> '''Benton:''' [[DisproportionateRetribution Littering, sir.]]
* HiddenDepths: During his MotiveRant in the vehicle as Benton is climbing around outside it, Ray K suggests that he took the role of pretending to be Vecchio as a way to escape some incidents in his past that led him to want to "start a new life". Those instances, which include a painful separation from his ex-wife and the death of one of his colleagues, will be explored in future episodes.
* InevitableWaterfall: In the opening sequence, as Fraser is chasing a suspect, this inevitably happens to both of them. Fraser is shown having apprehended the suspect immediately thereafter.
* NaiveNewcomer: Ray K understandably tries to keep up the charade of being Vecchio until the pressure gets to be too much for him, causing him to start venting that he was just a low-level detective looking for a job who got roped into the operation... while Benton is in the process of climbing around outside his car.
* NoodleIncident:
** During the opening sequence, the RCMP Inspector in charge of debriefing Benton comments that the latter caused ''$733,000'' in property damage, including the destruction of multiple boats and other vehicles, in pursuit of the criminal apprehended just beforehand. When he asks Benton to explain why he went to such lengths to apprehend someone who was ostensibly "littering", the explanation cuts from Benton explaining that the criminal was using a tribal burial ground as a dumping area for trash to reference to an oil tanker, and how the Inspector is to be made an "Honorary Tribal Chief" for his support of Benton's endeavors.
** Benton and Ray V arrested Zoltan Motherwell at some point during the first two seasons, though the incident never occurred on-screen (nor were the circumstances leading up to his arrest explained), only being referenced after the fact.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: The majority of Benton's co-workers, as a result of Ray K going undercover, are forced to act dumb and pretend that Kowalski was the original Ray all along. The only time anyone drops the act before TheReveal is Francesca, who tells Kowalski to "[[{{Foreshadowing}} watch where you put your hands, buddy]]" when he's trying to help her down from the burning townhouse complex.
* OnlySaneMan: Much of the episode deals with Fraser trying (and failing) to explain to everyone else that his partner has inexplicably gone missing and been replaced by a copycat who everyone refers to by the same name. The end of the episode makes it clear that Welsh and the rest of the staff were keeping up the act to make it easier for Ray K to disappear into his undercover work.
* PutOnABus: Ray K is only shown in the opening, placing a phone call to Benton and acknowledging Lt. Welsh before walking out of the Chicago PD. The end of the episode explains that he's gone undercover, with no timeline given as to whether he'll ever return to regular police work.
* ReTool: Due to the fact that the show was brought back (to CTV) after initially being canceled by Creator/{{CBS}}. The show's secondary lead has been replaced, the apartment where Benton lived for the first two seasons has been burned down, and he's saddled with a new partner that has the same first name and a different set of quirks.
* StalkerShrine: When Benton rescues Frannie from her burning apartment, he fails to notice a decorated mirror she has adorned with lipstick hearts, along with a picture of Benton (technically a still from the pilot episode), marked up with the same hearts.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: In-universe, Welsh opts to hire a detective who doesn't look much like Ray, but adopts similar mannerisms and drives a similar vehicle in an attempt to keep up the charade. It takes all manner of contrivances before Welsh is finally able to tell Benton that Ray V is undercover and Kowalski has taken his place.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: The first few times Benton questions members of the Chicago PD about Ray's whereabouts, they refer to Vecchio by his full name, tipping Benton off that something's odd.
* TrashTheSet: By the time Fraser gets back to his apartment in Chicago, he discovers that the entire complex was burnt down by the arsonist, with nothing left besides embers. In real-life, the apartment sets had already been struck (dismantled), which led to the show changing gears and having Fraser live in the Canadian Consulate.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The whereabouts of the other inhabitants of Fraser's apartment complex, including Willie and the other tenants, aren't made clear once the apartment complex has burned down, beyond a shot of some generic extras staring at the wreckage.
