* Tons of horrible things happen to bats, from burning alive to being bombs to getting your wings pecked off (as a child--and still alive) to suicide. And the list goes on and on.
** Not to mention the things that could have happened to Shade and Marina: Being left for an owl, being lost in the sea (Shade) and drowning (Marina), not to mention being struck by lightning and getting attacked by bigger bats that could tear out your heart in a second. Shade and Marina were also close to getting their wings pecked off.
* Project X-Ray in Sunwing, responsible for the HumansAreCthulhu trope. Also TruthInTelevision; see Website/TheOtherWiki.
* The implication that Goth killed all of the bats in the snowy cabin and wore all of their bands as a sort of hunting trophy in Silverwing. He doesn't even eat all of them, saying that there "is only so much bat even [he] can stomach." In Firewing, Murk explains that he only eats bats to survive, but apparently Goth is just a mass murderer.
** This might be an inversion, as this is what saves Shade and Marina in the second last chapter: Goth and Throbb get struck by lightning captured by their bands.
* Goth and the cannibal bats in general.
* One could point out countless examples in Firewing, but in the end, the whole book is pretty much this. It is Hell after all.
* Cama Zotz himself is pretty frightening, both before and after we meet him in person.
* When almost kills out of rage is both scary and sad. She snaps out of it but it's sad to see children characters going through this.
* Griffin almost getting buried alive beneath Tree Haven. As it is, he gets sucked into the Underworld, which isn't much better.
* All of Goth's attempts to kill the main characters. At first it was...mostly...for survival, but as he gets angrier and more vengeful he all but turns into a serial killer.
* The final fight in Silverwing in the clouds, where visibility and hearing is almost zero, where lightning could strike at any time, not knowing where an enemy is coming from until it's too late.
* Griffin getting attacked by the Oasis bats and later .
* Cama Zotz is revealed to have . Though one good thing did come out of it, and luckily Zotz can't destroy it.
* Anyone squeamish about needles won't like the part where Shade and the other bats get the discs sewn onto their stomachs. It's also just sad to see animals treated that way. As the above examples state, it was something that really happened.
* Goth succeeds this time, in the most awful way. He tears heart out and probably eats in in front of Shade. It's what Goth wanted to do to Shade when he was a newborn, only this time it's so much worse.
