''[[DescribeTopicHere Don't describe Britney Spears here!]] [[MemeticMutation LEAVE HER]] [[Creator/ChrisCrocker ALONE!]]''

Britney Jean Spears, born 2nd December 1981 (1991-present) is a pop star who rose to fame in 1999 off of the success of her debut single "...Baby One More Time." She also had many immensely successful singles and iconic moments in her career. Known for her catchy, dramatic, electronic focused, deep and edgy pop music. She also has a CashCowFranchise set up because of her.

You may know her from her hit songs such as, Baby One More Time, Crazy, Oops I Did It Again, Sometimes, Lucky, Stronger, I'm A Slave 4 U, Overprotected, Me Against the Music, Everytime, Toxic, Someday, Gimme More, Piece Of Me, Break The Ice, Womanizer, Circus, If U seek Amy, 3, Hold It Against Me, Till The World Ends, I Wanna Go, Scream & Shout and Work Bitch. Due to these songs and their successes, Britney has influenced many subsequent female singers of the 00's with the likes of Music/LadyGaga, Music/MarinaAndTheDiamonds,Music/CarlyRaeJepsen, Sky Ferreira, Music/EllieGoulding, Kesha, Music/LanaDelRey, Music/MileyCyrus, Charli XCX, Music/KatyPerry and Music/PixieLott all citing her as a big influence in their music and career choices.

A former member of the 90s revival of ''TheMickeyMouseClub'', Britney was the first, and ultimately the poster girl, for the [[TheNineties the late '90s]] wave of {{boy band}}s and [[IdolSinger female solo artists]]. Part of her rise came from the exploitation of her sexuality, as the [[JailBait seventeen year old Britney]] flaunted her lolita looks with [[CatholicSchoolGirlsRule school girl outfits]] and [[LatexSpaceSuit tight red leather catsuits]], while [[ContractualPurity still having]] an [[TheIngenue image of innocence]]. Interestingly, Spears orchestrated many of her most controversial moments, including choosing a high school setting for her first video, and unbuttoning her t-shirt for her '99 Rolling Stone cover. She did two promo tours' on in malls and one with Nsync. She did 4 tours in 4 years. Starting with Baby One More Time and ending in DreamWithinADream.

Her albums and singles sold millions, her videos gained constant rotation on {{MTV}}, she made numerous, well-received guest spots on ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' as both host and musical guest, her VMA performances are considered the ceremony's most iconic, controversial and memorable, debuting with a joint performance with Music/{{NSYNC}}, dancing with a snake, kissing Madonna and other things. She had a hit movie (''Film/{{Crossroads|2002}}'') and received 2 Grammy nominations (for Best New Artist in 1999 and Best Pop Vocal Performance in 2002) and won a GrammyAward for "Toxic" in 2005, has completed many sold out world tours. In early 1999, Spears started dating Music/JustinTimberlake after being reunited with him on tour. The two broke up in March 2002, after three years together and lots of press about the breakup followed. Britney soon received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame in 2003/2004.

Starting in 2004, Britney's personal life entered a downward spiral, with the media reporting every detail. Britney engaged in an impulse marriage to a childhood friend in Las Vegas which was quickly annulled after just 55 hours. This was followed by a whirlwind romance to backup dancer Kevin Federline. The pair married months after meeting and while Federline's ex-girlfriend (''Series/{{Moesha}}'' star Shar Jackson) was still pregnant with their second child. The public and media widely believed Spears was too good for Federline and that he made her "trashy". A {{reality TV}} series in 2005 (''Britney & Kevin: Chaotic'') was created in an effort to combat the waves of bad publicity surrounding their relationship. Viewership started off strong but gradually declined over the show's run, and it only made the two more fodder for the tabloids.

Though she ultimately divorced Federline in 2006, shortly after the birth of her second child, the divorce culminated in a rather public [[CreatorBreakdown mental breakdown]] that resulted in Britney night-partying heavily with Paris Hilton & Lindsay Lohan, [[ImportantHaircut shaving her head]], and checking into rehab twice. She was sent back and completed a month in rehab, but continued to spiral out of control. She gave a universally panned performance of her single "Gimme More" at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. This was followed by her losing custody of her kids for a period of time and a three hour standoff at her home regarding her custody of her sons, which involved police, ambulances, helicopters, and the paparazzi. She was soon placed in a 5150 hold at the hospital and after being released, her father was placed under her conservator-ship by the courts.

All of this is explained further, though not entirely in depth, in her 2008 MTV documentary ''For The Record''. Britney also discusses life in the spotlight, the thrill of performing and explains her actions after her marriage to Federline fell apart. She also revealed she WillNotBeAVictim and Dancing is therapy for her. She also shows her workload over a three month album launch.

Britney has since recovered fairly well and has since made [[CareerResurrection a comeback]] of sorts, returning to her career full-time. She continues to perform, and remains a relevant pop cultural figure. To date, she has sold over 100 million records worldwide and her next albums, ''Circus'' and ''Femme Fatale'', debuted at #1 on their first weeks of release, selling 3 million copies worldwide each. She also had one of the five biggest-selling concert tours of 2009 and 2011 with "the Circus Tour" and "Femme Fatale Tour", respectively. She also had four number ones, Till the World Ends, 3, I Wanna Go and Hold It Against Me. In May 2012, it was announced that she, alongside DemiLovato, would be joining the judging panel of the US version of ''Series/TheXFactor''. She left the series at the end of that year in order to get back to making music and performing.

During this time, she collaborated with Will.I.Am, who released their duet "Scream & Shout" that October. The song was a global success, reaching #1 in over 20 countries. She spent most of 2012 and 2013 recording her 8th album ''Britney Jean'', with Will.I.Am, Sia, William Orbit and David Guetta. Spears co-wrote all the album's tracks and cited the album as her most personal yet. She also did a rockumentary, examining the build up to her Vegas residency, called "I Am Britney Jean". Named "Piece Of Me", Spears 2 year Vegas residency started December 27 2013, opening to rave reviews and selling out the first two legs.

!!This singer provides examples of:
* AbsoluteCleavage: The white outfit in 3 and her Elvis outfit promo for Live In Las Vagas.
* ActionGirl: Break The Ice, Womanizer, Toxic, Criminal, Stronger and generally her stage shows.
* TheAce: In both work ethic and general ability to sell, one can look for "flops", but they are few and far between, semi on purpose (Jean) or forced by scetchy circumstances(Britney era radio drama's). Besides her comeback and very small hiatuses. Shes' the most successful one of her peers and the woman who came after her.
* AllJustADream: "Baby One More Time", Born To Make You Happy, I Wanna Go.
* AudienceParticipationSong: "I Wanna Go" got members of the audience, on the stage to dance at Femme Fatale. "Anticipating" was the sing along section in Dream Within A Dream.
* AloneInACrowd: Discussed in Alien and Lucky and her Rockumentaries.
* AlohaHawaii: her "Live And More" live show recorded on the beaches of Hawaii, and focusing on her holiday there.
* AfterTheEnd: "Till The World Ends".
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Her role in How I Met Your Mother.
* AlbumTitleDrop: The significant majority of her albums have these...
** "Baby One More Time" and "Oops I Did It Again" in the title tracks.
** "I wanna get ''In The Zone''"" in "Me Against The Music".
** In the ''Circus'' track on her sixth album. "All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a ''Circus''."
** A track from her album ''Femme Fatale'', titled "Big Fat Bass" Will.I.am can be heard saying "The Femme Fatale" at the end of the song.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Kevin Federline and Adnan the paparazzo aside, she sang of this in ''Toxic'' and ''Criminal''.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Has had the most negative feedback out of most of her contemporaries, despite being one of the most successful artists of all time. If she does have a "good" day, some of her own fans will try and take it away from her. Poor girl never gets a break. She gets made fun of for basically what makes her so successful: pop songs, prominent sexuality, not possessing powerhouse vocals, sometimes lip syncing during live performances which feature heavy dancing, albums that focus on creating dance anthems with mass appeal instead of singer/songwriting, having a huge fanbase sometimes described as delusional, poor personal decisions, working extremely hard even after immense troubles.
* AndThatLittleGirlWasMe: She has done this with 'Girl in the Mirror.'
--->''I can't believe it's what I see''
--->''That the girl in the mirror''
--->''The girl in the mirror''
--->''Is me''
* AntiLoveSong: "Oops I Did It Again."
---> ''It may seem like a crush''
---> ''Doesn't mean that I'm serious''
---> ''I'm not that innocent''
** She has others like "When I Say So" and others.
* AnimatedMusicVideo: "Break The Ice" and "Kill The Lights"
* {{Ascended Fan|boy}}girl: Both ways with Madonna, Madonna wanted to work with her and did twice. SelenaGomez got one of her recording rejects. Performed with Music/MichaelJackson at his 30th anniversary concert in 2001. Also presented him with MTV's Artist of the Millennium award in 2002.
** Also worked with Music/LadyGaga, Music/MileyCyrus and Music/{{Kesha}} on Quicksand, Bangerz and Till The World Ends respectively, and Music/DemiLovato on X Factor. Lady Gaga originally wrote Telephone for Spears but recorded it herself when Spears label rejected it.
** KatyPerry co-wrote a song called "Passenger" featured on Spears 8th album Britney Jean.
* AudienceShift: Her audience was originally pre-teens. Still is - we just grew up with her!
* AuthorVocabularyCalendar / VerbalTic / LyricalTic / ArcWords: You'd be amazed at how often she says [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omqGT9L76hs "crazy" and "baby"]].
* BaldWoman: Part of her CreatorBreakdown in 2007 involved shaving her head.
* BareYourMidriff: Is quite famous for doing this since 1998 and continues today. The fashion choice was considered controversial at one point, amazingly.
* BadassLongcoat: In three different sections of Dream Within A Dream.'
* BeYourself: Arguably, her overall message.
** "Bottom line: If you love yourself, it will all work out."
** "I know not everyone will like me, but this is who I am so if you don't like it, tough!"
** "I looked up to people, but I never wanted to be them. I always had my own identity."
**
---> "What you see is what you get
---> This is me, hey you
---> If you want me, don't forget
---> You should take me as I am
---> 'Cause I can promise you
---> Baby, What U See Is What U Get"
**
---> "Baby I'm a freak and I don't really give a damn"
---> "Walk a mile in my shoes, do me right or I'm through"
** "Go with your heart, follow your instincts, don't try to control it, let it kind of control you"
** The message and theme of ''Oops!...I Did It Again.''
** "People can take everything away from you, but they can never take away your truth. But the question is, can you handle mine?" From ''My Prerogative''
* BSide:I Run Away, Deep In My Heart, Intimidated, Before The Goodbye, Autumn Goodbye, Heart, Mona Lisa, Over To You Now, Chaotic. If you want to open it up to bonus tracks and exclusives they'd be more.
** Bonus Tracks: Scary, Don't Keep Me Waiting, He About To Lose Me, I'll Never Stop Loving You, You Got It All, Brightest Mornin Star, Hold On Tight, Selfish, Rock Boy, Rock Me In, Phonography, Everybody, Amnesia, Get Back, Quicksand, Outta This World, Now That I Found You, When I Found You and more.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: On December 2, 2010, after ''yet another'' set of rumors involving Britney Spears, this time from Star magazine (with input by her first husband for two days, Jason Alexander, about her boyfriend Jason Trawick allegedly physically abusing her and her keeping silent to the police on the matter, Britney personally makes five posts on her {{Twitter}} account. The first two for congratulating her fans for wishing her a happy 29th birthday, the next one announcing that the release date of her new album will be in March 2011, the fourth one to announce she will be enjoying a romantic vacation for the weekend, [[TakeThat and the last one...]], [[http://twitter.com/britneyspears/status/10465543475691520 well, you can see it for yourself]]. BewareTheNiceOnes, indeed.
** When it was reported that a prominent Republican governer's wife said she wanted to "shoot Britney" for promoting sexualty, Britney remarked "She probably just needs to get laid!"
*** Recorded a scathing attack on her label/creative team called Rebellion. Choice lyrics include: "The poison they feed you/And the voodoo that they do". Similarly, Mona Lisa - the demo of which Britney leaked herself unedited to the world on live radio - details a celebrity tired of the limelight: "She's the original, she wants you to know, she's been cloned! Now Mona Lisa's got to fly".
**** During a particularly dark period of 2007, Spears website consisted solely of a picture of her and her backup dancers flipping off the camera.
* BeneathTheMask: One interpretation of her "Change" between who she was 13 years ago, and now, is that NOW is the real her. She highlighted this sort of reveal in her video for IF U Seek Amy. Her character in the video has her secret dark self, and a positive family self, which could refer to many a person in the public eye.
* BeigeProse / Administrivia/BrevityIsWit: Her statements at ''The X Factor'' have had this element to them.
** Additionally the times when she does think hard about what she wants to say she can be make them quite witty and quick.
* BuffySpeak: She was a teen pop star, but she hasn't outgrown it much.
* {{Bishoujo}}: {Drop Dead} Beautiful.
* BitingTheHandHumor: Some of her earlier SNL work had this element to it. Particuarly the Dawn Pawlowski skit in 2000.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: She plays all three in her videos for "Toxic" and "Womanizer".
* BrownEyes: She has a personable and trustworthy set of these.
* BreakupBreakout: Was in a band called Innocense for all of five seconds before deciding to go solo and getting signed to Jive.
* BreakupSong: "Baby One More Time", "Till It's Gone", "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Don't Cry", "Baby Boy", "Why Should I Be Sad", "Look Who's Talking", "Dramatic", "Shattered Glass", 'Mannequin", "Toy Soldier", "Where Are You Now", "Shadow", "Everytime", "Womanizer", "I Run Away" and more...
* UsefulNotes/{{British Accent|s}}:
** Strangely adopted the accent during 2007 while dating British paparazzo Adnan Ghalib.
** Used quite a lot for her collaboration with will.i.am - "Scream and Shout".
** Her unreleased song, "Whiplash", written by Britney and recorded by SelenaGomez, features Selena incorporating a FakeBrit accent -- quite possibly a holdover from co-writer, Britney's demo recording.
** Used, hilariously throughout 'Work Bitch'
* BadassBoast: Piece Of Me: "No wonder there's panic in the industry, I mean please!" and "Miss American Dream since I was seventeen". Hot As Ice's key lyric is : "Living legend, you can look but don't touch!". The producer of Gimme More announces "The legendary Miss Britney Spears" at the end of the song. Toy Soldier features the line: "Coming back looking delicious, yes I know you wanna kiss it". "Work Bitch" can be seen as one Badass Boast considering she already has all of the luxury and riches she sings of and is in a position to tell others they should work for the same. She also said, when asked was she ashamed of her prior music that all of it "fucking rocks".
* BreakTheCutie: Yes, so very much. Especially the whole period 2002 to late 2008. Bad break ups, take that's to her, being bashed by her own friends, distancing herself from her friends & family & co workers, over exposure, being used for a few years and then enabled into a breakdown, an unhappy marriage, media backlash, artistic growing pains, one memorable lazy performance, and some very bad friends. 2002 to 2008 was an awful period in her life, with a few very good points cuz she WillNotBeAVictim, but still, OUCH, Britney Jean, OUCH!
* BuxomIsBetter: Britney was always a tad bit controversial even back in her "glory years" for revealing attire, some detractors have claimed that she only became famous because she is a well-endowed, attractive woman rather than because of any talent she may have as a musician. (But then again any musician who is known for sex appeal has been accused of this.)
* CallBack: One notable lyrical moment is the song "Stronger," where she sings "My loneliness ain't killing me no more," a reference to "Baby One More Time."'s "My loneliness is killing me.
** Also in the song "Inside Out." She references "...Baby One More Time" ("Hit me one more time, it's so amazing").
** Called "Womanizer"'s music video, ''Toxic part 2'' outright in her documentary For The Record.
*** Additionally used an actor she used in "Toxic" in "Womanizer".
** "Yeah I did, did it again" was delicately slipped into "MANNEQUIN".
** Her Piece Of Me performances call back to her whole career.
* CannotSpitItOut: Topic of "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know".
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: She rarely, if ever, criticizes her peers and contemporaries; the few times she has, years ago, she gained much criticism. She is TheStoic of the pop world the rest of the time.
** This even applies to her "Golden Years" where she was blocked from radio stations in 2001-2004 due to copyright issues involving her label and Clear Channel.
** She is (was) knocked for being a bad role model even though if anything she is an overachiever (then) and a survivor (now). See [[http://www.newbritneyology.com/?p=219 NewBritneyology's Article About this Phenomenon]].
* CatholicSchoolGirlsRule: "Baby One More Time". Oh baby baby...
* CoolBigSis: To her 10 year younger sister named Jamie Lynne who she recorded "Chillin With You" with.
* CommitmentIssues: The singer of Oops could be seen as suffering this. Hinted at also in the In The Zone/Blackout albums.
* TheCasanova: In "Womanizer" she discusses this trope.
* CensorSteam: In the edited version of the "Womanizer" video. She appears naked in a sauna [[HandOrObjectUnderwear covering her breasts with her hands]] and with her genitals out of view of the camera, but this was still too racy for some airings, so the edited version has steam covering her.
* CelebrityEndorsement: Did three memorable Pepsi commercials back in 2000-2001, was the face of Candies for two years, and of course endorses and helps create her own perfume, two of which are some of the world's best sellers. She also worked with Skechers in the early 2000s. Plentyoffish, and Sony were featured in her Hold It Against Me music video. Appeared in various Japanese and USA commercials for numerous brands and companies.
** Also joined and backed ''The X Factor''.
** Made a mini music video/commercial for Twister Dance, released September 2012.
** She released her own video game called Britney's Dance Beat in 2001.
** She's had at least two clothing lines, one by Candies, one Intimate.
** She has many MANY Perfumes she sells, one of the best selling, ever.
* CentralTheme: Be yourself and it's okay to make mistakes.
* ChangedForTheVideo: Born To Make You Happy has the breakdown removed and Overprotected was remixed for US release.
* ChildProdigy: Award winning dancer since 3, singing since at least 5, worked for Disney in a variety show when she was a kid, used to have an incredibly dark low voice for a child, which she won awards for, used to be a successful gymnast, and went to a performance arts school in New York when she was a pre-teen.
* ChristmasSongs: "My Only Wish (This Year)."
* ClothesMakeTheLegend: The tied up and buttoned down school shirt, the red jumpsuit in Oops!, her fleshtoned VMA 2000 outfit, her 2001 VMA snake, her 2003 Toxic air hostess uniform and her various belly baring outfits in the early 00's.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Her persona on ''The X Factor'' and to some, her persona in life.
* CombatStilettos: When fighting her doppelganger in the "Hold It Against Me" music video.
* ConceptAlbum: Surprisingly apparent if you think about her albums; they all tell a story...
** ''Baby'' is about summer romances and youthful love, ''Oops'' is about being yourself and dealing with fame, ''Britney'' is about maturing and real life, ''In The Zone'' is about sexuality and fame, ''Blackout'' is about blacking out negativity, ''Circus'' is a variety of sounds and songs which examine a number of different topics, ''Femme Fatale'' is about bad relationships & dancing and ''Britney Jean'' is the story of a break up & handling it, then finding love again
* CoverVersion: "The Beat Goes On", "Satisfaction", "I Love Rock N Roll", and "My Prerogative", to name a few.
** A lesser known cover would be "Out From Under," which was originally on a Bratz soundtrack.
** She recently covered Madonna's "Burning Up" for the Femme Fatale tour.
** She covered "You Oughta Know" on The Circus Tour.
** She did a Madonna[=/=]Janet Jackson cover medley in her debut tour.
** She also covered Walk This Way with Music/{{NSYNC}} and Aerosmith themselves at the SuperBowl...
** I'm Scared was briefly a part of her Circus tour, originally by the artist Duffy.
* CrossOver: Meeting Film/AustinPowers, Pharrell Williams and DJ Qualls in the "Boys" video.
* CensoredTitle: If U See Amy instead of If U Seek Amy. Work Work instead of Work Bitch.
* CloudCuckooLander: One said that she gets the FullNameUltimatum in a affectionate way. She has her moments of saying odd things.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Lynne, her mother, wrote a book; Through The Storm released in 2008, which basically took the story they told in 2000, with Heart To Heart, and turned it on its head, with alcoholicism, money problems, her father's business issues and numerous other indications/incidents and family cited as reasons for Britney to have such a big breakdown in 2004-2008, outside the immense career pressure she was enduring.
* TheDeterminator: She makes all her decisions.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Britney Jean is personal, dark and has a Parental Warning sticker, compared to Femme Fatale's less personal dance album vibe. In The Zone was also edgier and sexier then Britney. Blackout is way darker and sexier then Circus. Oops was darker and edgier then Baby by focusing on break ups and celebrity issues.
* ADateWithRosiePalms: "Touch Of My Hand"; is about appreciating self-love in the absence of one's partner, specifically written by Spears because she felt there weren't enough songs for girls on the topic.
** "Phonography," "Don't Hang Up" and "I Wanna Go" also apply.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: A "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Ds6b33PTbGxk Criminal]]."
* DancingIsSeriousBusiness: She doesn't want to tour unless she can dance on her tours.
---> Anytime I can go into the studio and just dance and put choreography together is like a spiritual experience for me, Everyone has a world they create around themselves, if I have a lot of nervous energy when I start dancing it all goes away and I just feel emotion
---> For me art is therapy because it's like your expressing yourself in such a spiritual way, Sometimes you don't need words to go through what you need to go through. It's an emotion you feel when you dance that you need to touch on and you only touch it when you move a certain way -Britney Spears
** And most fan discussions are about her dancing, her dancing style, her passion, her frequently of touring.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: "Cannot record with my shoes on".
* DoubleVision: Used in the video for "Lucky" with her playing the role of the titular character and her guardian angel. Plays three different versions of herself in Toxic and Womanizer.
* DownerEnding: "Why Should I Be Sad?" on Blackout, "Everytime" on In the Zone and "Don't Cry" on Britney Jean.
* DoYouThinkICantFeel: Both her haters and even some of her fans like to believe her shyness and awkwardness indicates she's controlled and going through the motions. For The Record, I Am Britney Jean and all her interviews after X Factor state different..
* DigitalPiracyIsOkay: She leaked the demo of Mona Lisa to her fans in 2004/2005 and has been leaking songs ever since. Over 50 noted on TheOtherWiki. These events are all Britmas by her fans and supporters.
* DreamTeam: Music/LadyGaga, Music/{{Kesha}}, Music/NickiMinaj, Yin Yang Twins, Madonna,*NSYNC, Music/JustinTimberlake, Music/ChristinaAguilera, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, will.i.am, Bloodshy & Avant, Rihanna, Elizabeth Arden, and many many more.
* DrivenToSuicide: In the cancelled ideas for Everytime and Gimme More videos.
* DreamWithinADream: Her third concert tour for her third album was titled, and based upon this idea.
* {{Dedication}}: Just Yesterday (for my sister) for Jamie Lynn, Someday for her first son, My Baby for her second son, Perfume for Jason Trawick, Dramatic/Guilty/Look Who's Talking for Justin Timberlake, she probably has more both unreleased and songs on her albums which she hasn't disclosed who there about.
* EpicRocking: "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" is longer than any of her other songs.
* EthicalSlut: "When I Say So" and most of the "In The Zone", "Femme Fatale", and "Blackout" albums.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: She has her fair share of female fans who would turn for her in a pin drop. Reese Witherspoon admitted a crush and another female celebrity said "I'd bathe in her sweat".
* {{Expy}}: In some of her music videos, Britney isn't Britney, she's ''WesternAnimation/AeonFlux'', complete with her own Trevor Goodchild. Three instances: "Toxic", "Womanizer", and "[[AnimatedMusicVideo Break The Ice]]".
* EasterEgg: All over the artwork of her seventh album Femme Fatale she has a tattoo saying either 7 or the FF insigna.
* {{Fangirl}}: Has Fangirls in Madonna, Lady Gaga, Music/MarinaAndTheDiamonds, Music/DemiLovato, Music/KatyPerry, Music/PixieLott, Music/{{Kesha}}, Rihanna, Music/LanaDelRey, Music/MileyCyrus, Music/HilaryDuff, Music/KellyClarkson, and Music/SelenaGomez, amongst other artists.
* {{Fanservice}}: Many of her videos and outfits.
* FirstNameBasis: If you say Britney the first thing you think of is her. Also the unique spelling means "Brittany" is often used as a diss against her.
* FeatherBoaConstrictor: Her famous and infamous Slave 4 U VMA 2001 performance.
* FemmeFatale: Her seventh album and tour was based around this concept. Of the more killer woman action girl defense of self way.
* FemaleGaze: Often in her video's she'll show off the man's sexiness too.
* FollowYourHeart: To go with her BeYourself message, she also said:
** "Go with your heart, follow your instincts, don't try to control it, let it kind of control you"
** "Brave New Girl", "Stronger", "I Wanna Go", "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", "Touch of my Hand" and "Passenger" would also, all fit into the criteria.
* FullNameUltimatum: Implied that when her parents are angry with her they call her Britney Jean, in an affectionate way.
* FormerChildStar: Former Mouseketeer.
* FakeOutFadeOut: in her cover of I Love Rock N Roll.
* GemEncrusted: Famously had diamonds glued all over her naked body for the Toxic video. Wore a bra made entirely from diamonds during her Dream Within A Dream tour in 2001-2002. Currently opening her Vegas show wearing a jewel encrusted bodysuit similar to the one she wore at the 2000 VMAs.
* GeniusDitz: Offstage she can be flaky, awkward, and her behavior weird, but during the glory years she was an unparalleled performer and the most successful pop star of the 2000's.
* GenkiGirl: She barely has breaks, even her "breaks" are over-filled with projects, tv shows, recording, tours, and little ditties/Britmases for her fans. She has spoken of becoming bored as soon as she has free time.
* GenreRoulette: Ever since her third album she's been mixing up her sounds a lot.
** To be exact she's toyed with genres such as bubblegum pop, dance-pop, R&B, trip-hop, electronica, rock, dubstep, synthpop, and new wave.
** Her most varied albums are In The Zone, Blackout and Circus.
* GoodBadGirl: A big part of her image growth from the year 2000, which was not overtly sexual till 2001 with Slave 4 U.
* GenreShift: While she has been mixing up her sound, there does seem to be a general drift in one direction. Ever since she got the Grammy for "Toxic" (for Best Dance Recording) she's produced fewer ballads, and had begun to experiment with a lot of rhythm-based genres, like Electronica, Dubstep, and Trip-Hop. She seemed to have found her niche in the umbrella of "Dance Music," and all the sub-genres that envelops. However, her 8th album Britney Jean saw her return to some old-school pop beats and saw Spears using her natural, deeper voice for some songs.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: "Love me, hate me, say what you want about me but all of the boys and [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer all of the girls]] are begging to '''[[DoubleEntendre if you seek Amy]]'''." Say those last four words out loud. Then put them into context with the rest of the song. The album it was on escaped the [[MediaWatchdog Parental Advisory]] label, but [[SubvertedTrope it didn't get past the radar the second time]] four months later, when she released it as a single (not only was it heavily censored, but TheBBC and likely many other broadcasters insisted on just calling it "Amy").
**
--> "Do me right or I'm through."
--> "Baby, don't you wanna dance upon me?"
--> "wanna dance till my body aches"
** Her third and fourth album featured many sexual references, overt and subtle, and were released at a time when her key demographic was still quite young.
* GirlishPigtails: In the "Baby One More Time" video and various live performances.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, some moments during her 2007 VMA performance and her Slave music video where she engaged in a co-ed orgy.
** Almost kissed Lady Gaga's character Jo Calderone at the VMA's 2011 but backed away, quipping "I've done that already!".
* GodivaHair: While she's in the bath in the "Everytime" video.
* GreatestHitsAlbum: Two, ''Greatest Hits: My Prerogative'' and ''The Singles Collection''.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Was marketed as this when she first started out, though she's cast that image aside in favour of a more mature image.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Began partying frequently in 2001-2002, partied hard with Paris Hilton after her divorce in 2006 and continued without Hilton for most of 2007. Infamously partied with Diddy the night before her 2007 VMA performance, with some choosing to blame her clubbing for the failed performance.
* HandOrObjectUnderwear: The "Womanizer" video has her completely naked in a sauna covering her breasts with her hands, and the "Toxic" video has her entirely naked and covered with diamonds.
* HatesBeingAlone: Is never single for very long, and she said she was a "go-er" when in mental and emotional trouble, doing anything to stay busy. She loves her friends and family dearly. She hates being alone and doesn't thrive being on her own. Even when her workload is immense she keeps up with her childhood friends and people she works or worked with. One time flying her friends to Hawaii to see her!
* HeartbeatSoundtrack: Used at the end of, oddly enough, Heart!
* HollywoodSpelling: Those with the more traditional spelling of "Brittany" are probably annoyed by how she spells her name (or more specifically, her mother's choosing to spell it as such to set her apart)
* HotterAndSexier: Been walking this path for awhile now. Was dubbed Sexist Woman In Music by Billboard in 2012 and Sexiest Woman Alive in 2004 by FHM.
* HiddenDepths: Before fame, she used to perform with a voice much more similar to Christina Aguilera's style of singing. She and her label decided to "change" her signature style to something more relatable to younger audiences, hence the "girly" and "sexy" tone she's known for. Britney worked for a year with a vocal coach to bring back some of her older vocal nuances for her 8th album Britney Jean. She taught herself piano over one weekend, as confirmed by her manager. She plays the piano on her song Everytime. Spears also wrote the song Someday (about a baby) in one sitting, two weeks before discovering she was pregnant. Almost all producers who have worked with her have publically admitted they thought wrongly about her and were pleasantly surprised by her professionalism and her vocal abilities. One even commented that she does not need anywhere near as much vocal doctoring or autotune compared to other pop contemporaries.
* HumanAliens: in the music video for "Oops!...I Did It again," she's the queen of Mars.
** Recently lampshaded in the video for "Hold It Against Me." Britney pokes fun at a rumor from early in her career that she was an alien by crash landing to Earth as a pop star who shortly after takes the world by storm at the beginning of the video.
** A song on her 2013 album Britney Jean is called Alien. It examines the loneliness in fame and features lyrics like "The stars in the sky look like home/take me home" and "I was lonely then/like an alien".
* HymnToMusic: Me Against The Music, Circus, Till The World Ends, Body Ache, to name a few.
* IdiosyncraticAlbumTheming: 5 out of her 8 albums so far end on a ballad. Dear Diary, Everytime, Why Should I Be Sad, My Baby and Criminal.
* InDaClub: All her albums from Britney to Britney Jean.
* ImportantHaircut: Shaving her head in February 2007 shortly after being forced into, then checking out of, rehab.
* IntercourseWithYou: So many of her songs...Especially on ''In The Zone'' and ''Blackout''. Slave 4 U is probably the most famous.
** Pretty much every song on ''Femme Fatale'' features this trope in full effect.
** "Body Ache" and "Tik Tik Boom" of Britney Jean.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: An interpretation of "Toxic" reads this way.
* InsultBackfire: One of the most common insults about Crossroads was that she was playing herself. A very intelligent, quiet, socially outcast nerd, with morals. Also when people call her voice soft they are basically saying she knows how to fit into a song instead of compete with or overpower it.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: "can we just go to the movies", "I like to be out amongst the people", "I don't wanna be one of those stuck up people who's like "everybody's looking at me', but they are, it's the truth", ''Like an alien'', are but a few examples.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Both friends with Madonna, and friends with Lady Gaga, Kesha, Katy Perry, and Selena Gomez. She's the bridge between the the 80's pop stars and the 2010's pop stars.
* JustFriends: Discussed in "Dear Diary", "Seal It With A Kiss" and other songs.
* KaleidoscopeHair: She has dyed her hair many colors over the years, though blonde has always been predominant and associated with her career.
* TheKlutz: Her selling point is Klutz to whom you can relate.
* LampshadeHanging: A few examples of this...
** "Womanizer" has a conspicuous shot of a Nokia cell phone near the start. One of the appointments just visible in the frame is about a product placement meeting.
** The start of the video for "If U Seek Amy" spells out the "hidden" message in the lyrics very blatantly before the song begins.
** "Piece Of Me" is one long lamp shade hanging regarding her relationship with the press.
** In the video for "Hold It Against Me" Britney pokes fun at a rumor from early in her career that she was an alien by crash landing to Earth as a pop star who shortly after takes the world by storm at the beginning of the video.
** The SopranoAndGravel elements "Big Fat Bass (Feat. will.i.am)" is lampshaded with the lyric: "I can be the treble, you can be the bass".
** Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video has a woman obviously from a radio news channel saying how "Britney shows up at awards show half naked again, this annoys MoralGuardians Everywhere".
* TheLeader: She is known for starting trends within pop music; she was possibly the first pop star to work with The Neptunes, Blackout brought dubstep to the mainstream with Freakshow, Toxic foreshadowed dance pop's resurgence, she was the first solo female pop artist and is credited with kickstarting the teen pop trend of the early 2000s. A few of her "clones" have since commented that they were indeed marketed to be similar to Britney in sound and style. Blackout was dubbed "one of the most influential albums of all time". She also showed an odd focus on Chick Rock, Pop/rock, Faux rock and rock elements on her second and third album before the sound became cool in late 2002. Her 2001 album also had heavy R N B elements in Slave, Boys and others. Those are but a few examples
* LighterAndSofter: Circus was softer then Blackout, as far as topic goes, Femme Fatale was softer then Circus. Emotionally.
* LongRunner: She has been in the musical industry for quite a while: 16 years.
* LongTitle: "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", "Born To Make You Happy", "Why Should I Be Sad", "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "That's Where You Take Me", "What It's Like to be Me", "Don't Go Knockin' On My Door", "Now That I Found You", "Oops! I Did It Again" in relation to all of her other titles.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Refers to her paranoid, insecure moments in her relationship with Jason Trawick on "Perfume". Speaks of not being able to sleep from a mixture of excitement and insecurity after obtaining a new boyfriend in "(U Drive Me) Crazy". On Womanizer quips "You say I'm crazy/I got your crazy!" to the uh, womanizer. Appeared on then husband Kevin Federline's song Crazy, where she sings "And they say I'm crazy, for loving you".
* LyricalDissonance: "Lucky" is a perky, symphonic pop song about a celebrity who hates their life and feels that they are alone, despite how many people surround them day to day.
---> "She cries in her lonely heart thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life, why do these tears come at night?"
---> "Lost in an image, in a dream but there's no one there to wake her up"
* LicensedGame: Britney's Dance Beat.
* MelismaticVocals: The word "go" in Baby One More Time which she turns into a very deep "GoOoOoOoOoOoOO". Same for "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know": "Don't hold back! Just let it goooooooooo! Don't...let me be the last to knoOoOoOoOw". "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" and "And Then We Kiss are full of these. Slave 4 U: "I'm a slaAaAaAaAve...for you!". I Love Rock N Roll: "We can be aloooooooone". Perfume: "Sometimes it feels like there's threeeeeeeeeeee" The time she sang Happy Birthday to LA Reid during X Factor in 2012.
* MadonnaWhoreComplex: Discussed in the notes in her first greatest hits collection..
---> "...is she a good girl doing bad things,
---> or a bad girl doing good things?
---> Either way we are engaged."
* {{Medley}}: She's done about 8 tours featuring various medlies. The most memorable ones are her DWAD medley of Sometimes/Born To Make You Happy/Lucky featuring Britney dancing in a life size music box, the Femme Fatale tour medley of Baby One More Time and S&M, her VMA performance of Satisfaction/Oops I Did It Again, and her performance with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott saw her performing Like A Virgin/Hollywood/Work It and a Madonna Janet Jackson 80's medley in her first tour, Gimme More/Break The Ice, and there are some others.
* MinisculeRocking: "Dear Diary" is her shortest song, as is "Shattered Glass", just under 3 minutes, her average is way over 4.00
* MusicIsPolitics: Played straight, but Britney and her team know how to play the game. She was the first pop star out the gate in 1997. She knew what styles are cool and are not. She is willing to take risks when others didn't and work hard when others don't. She gets things like momentum and keeping presence even on "hiatus".
* MadnessMantra: "Not alone, not alone, not alone" in Alien.
* {{Meganekko}}: While in disguise as a SexySecretary in the "Womanizer" video, and on ''Series/HowIMetYourMother''.
* MindScrew: Many of the videos for her first songs turn out to be daydreams. Lucky turned out to be incredibly prophetic to Spears own life. The Overprotected Darkchild video sees Britney being annoyed by criticism of an outfit she wore to a recent awards show. In response, Spears puts on the same outfit and dances in various public places before the media catches up to her.
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: Is subjected to some of the cruelest lies and criticisms yet refuses to respond to most of it. Was famously brought to tears by both Diane Sawyer and Matt Lauer in 2003 and 2006 respectively after they reminded her of the hardships she'd suffered and informed her of some of hatred surrounding her. Lauer went so far as to show her untrue tabloid headlines wishing for the ending of her marriage to Federline. Spears was lost for words, quietly remarking "Oh, they shouldn't say that, they should be pro-love". Examines loneliness all throughout her discography. Talked about wanting to feel "a part of the people" but not being able to walk down a street without security in her 2008 documentary. Again, was reduced to tears after confronting her lack of personal freedom.
* MoodWhiplash: The penultimate track of ''In The Zone'' is the upbeat, girl-powerish "Brave New Girl," which segues into "Everytime", one of the most TearJerker songs Britney ever recorded.
* MoralGuardians: She did manage to anger many of them in her early years, with the claims that she presented inappropriate sexual imagery to her younger fans and especially when she posed for a very provocative photo shoot for ''Rolling Stone'' magazine in 1999 when she was still under 18.
* MsFanservice: Often in real life.
* MultipleDemographicAppeal: Her audience ranges from preteens to 40 year olds.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Noted in both "Live and More!" and "Behind The Scenes of The Toxic Video" she must have caffeine every morning due to her crazy working hours. Is somewhat famous for her Starbucks addiction.
* MyCountryRightOrWrong: While Britney has largely shied away from talking about politics, during an interview for MTV, Britney stated her political beliefs: that she had unwavering support and trust for then-president George W. Bush regarding the Iraq War, as well as stating her belief that Americans should trust and support their President no matter what.
** She did, however, lampshade this when she guest-starred on ''Will and Grace'' as a maniacally right-wing pop star who takes over Jack's gay network--only to reveal that she's actually a hardcore lesbian.
*** She has since voiced her support for gay marriage, hinting at a slightly less Republican or conservative perspective.
* {{Nice G|uy}}irl: One unarguable part of her persona, very very few negative anecdotes, remembers fans after concerts, follows them on twitter, tweets them on occasion, was brought to tears when one gave her a framed poem about her talent, these days she says she does her albums and tours for her fans, Pink, Ke$ha, Hilary Duff, Mary J Blige, Robyn, all her producers and collaborators, and almost everyone who's ever met her says she is SWEET and highly professional.
* NonActorVehicle: Crossroads was Britney's first major acting role.
* NonAppearingTitle: "Brave New Girl" and "The Hook Up" don't have the titles as they are titled in the song. "brave girl" is said in Brave New Girl and "hook up" is said in The Hook Up. Me Against The Music was originally titled In The Zone, while the song was renamed, the album it was featured on was titled In The Zone and the title appears as a lyric in Me Against The Music. Interestingly, that title itself only appears in the second spoken ad-lib of the song, not in the actual lyrics.
** Also Blackout doesn't feature the word, or any references to blacking out. Britney Jean and Britney albums lack her name in them.
* NoodleIncident: At her December 30, 2013 Las Vegas show, she led *NSYNC's Lance Bass around on a leash. He thanked her for leading him "around like a kitty. Totally like old times."
* NostalgiaFilter: In regard to her fans. If it is older it is better by default, even if it's just the same thing or she's just a little older then she was back then. Her fans have an odd fixation with comparing everything she does now to the Old Britney - usually her work/style/clothes/body from 1998 to 2003. Anything after 2003 is considered New or Recent Britney. Most fans agree that her attitude towards her career significantly changed after her knee injury in 2004, and as a result tend to idolize the workaholic she used to be beforehand.
** These days the overall opinion is that her music has gotten better...''Blackout'', ''Circus'' and ''Femme Fatale'' earned her some of the best reviews of her career. The general consensus is that she knows how to create a hit, make a decent album, treat her fans well...
* NostalgicMusicBox: Used in her unreleased track "Baby Boy" and in her 2001 tour performances of "Born To Make You Happy".
** Also used for TearJerker effect in "Everytime." [[invoked]]
* NotStayingForBreakfast: She had a string of flings post Justin in 2003-2004. This is also a running theme in on the ''Femme Fatale'', ''Blackout'' and ''In The Zone'' albums
* NextSundayAD: Till The World Ends is dated 21 December 2012. The song came out early 2011. This is a reference to the end of the world conspiracy theory.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: This is up for how easily you believe in rumors, what she and her people outright state, and what her songwriters/collaborators state. Her producers, co workers, directors and other co-ordinators outright state she contribute heavily in the creation of her songs and how they are executed. On the other hand, in some interviews she could not name producers on her albums (though not all artist directly meet with their producers anyway). In an interview shortly after In the Zone came out, she identified one producer as "some guy in England." Songwriter Kerri Hilson, who wrote "Gimme More," calls Britney "One-take Jake." T-Pain commended her professionalism when she re-recorded their song Hot As Ice. She is generally known for her supreme professionalism in the studio and not taking up too much time doing numerous takes. She has said just because her performances are showy and her music is popular doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's doing!
* OrWasItADream: TheReveal of the DreamWithinADream tour is that she's not dreaming the whole non sensical epic experience.
* ObligatoryBondageSong: ''Lace And Leather'' is this.
** Her feature on a remix of "S&M" by Rihanna too, which was decidedly more graphic than the original lyrics.
** "Selfish" could be interpreted this way.
* ObsessionSong: "Radar" has its creepy moments.....
--> Whether you like it or not, I ain't gonna stop
--> I got my eye on you... and I can't let you get away...
* PassingTheTorch: A literal one from Madonna in the Me Against the Music video. Also a TakeUpMySword moment as Madonna is still around.
* PastInTheRearViewMirror: "Passenger". "hand over the keys".
* PimpedOutDress: The nightgown and awards show gown in "Lucky" and the wedding dress in "Hold It Against Me".
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Her childhood friends have been with her since infanthood, Jason was a long term friend/associate turned lover, and "I Will Be There" a track off her first album and "Chillin With You" of her 8th.
* PerformanceVideo: Gimme More, Overprotected (Crossroads video). Only two which is rare.
* ThePerfectionist: She has noted her perfectionist qualities in interviews, and most recently her I Am Britney Jean doco, but she doesn't like the fact that she is a perfectionist at all because she knows she can be difficult and stubborn as a result.
* PrayerPose: She did this in her Baby One More Time album cover, her Me Against The Music video and her 2007 VMA performance.
* PluckyGirl: Especially after 2002!
* PrecisionFStrike: If U Seek Amy is wordplay for "F U C K me". Dramatic: "Baby, fuck you". Get Naked: "I'm crazy as a motherfucker". Hot As Ice: "This ain't no foolishness or fuckery".
* PrettyInMink: Has worn several furs, like a [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/britney_at_the_2000_grammys.jpg fox wrap over]] a [[SimpleYetOpulent simple white dress]] to the 2000 Grammys, a [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/britney_spears_into_womanhood_4915.jpg sable-trimmed dress]] for a magazine shoot, a [[PinkMeansFeminine pink rabbit jacket (with pink jeans)]], and others.
** The single cover for Work Bitch has her wearing blue fur.
* ProductPlacement: Has started using her own branded perfume in her most recent music videos. Circus, Hold It Against Me, Criminal and, of course, Perfume!
* PunctuatedForEmphasis: I'm! Not! That! Innocent!
* RageQuit: She fired her entire creative team in 2005, saying on her website that they were too controlling and she was sick of being taken advantage of. Her quickie marriage was also dubbed an act of rebellion against her team, as was her head shaving. In an online letter in 2007, Britney spoke of "a manager from a long time ago who tried to come back into my life and change things..." in relation to her actions around the time of her head shaving. It was later revealed her manager conspired with her mother to get her into rehab. Britney spent most of 2007 at odds with her team, friends and family, infamously serving her mother with papers from a lawyer stating that she was not to go near Spears children if she was on any medication. They have since repaired their relationship.
* RearrangeTheSong: She has cabareted up, and otherwise remixed, her hit songs "Oops!", "Crazy" and "...Baby One More Time" on her tours since 2001.
** The cabaret mixes were performed at her Onyx Hotel tour and her ABC Gotham City Hall special.
** Overprotected was remixed for release in America, in order to target a more urban demographic.
** Crazy was remixed for release as a "Stop!" remix.
** Boys was remade into a Co-Ed remix with producer and songwriter Pharrell Williams singing a verse.
** Me Against The Music Bollywood remix and Circus was made funky.
* RefugeInAudacity: In her ''Series/WillAndGrace'' and ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' episodes where she plays extremely out of character people.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: "Rockstar" is this in spades. "I never loved you XOXOXO"
** Stronger, Womanizer, Dramatic, Don't Go Knockin' On My Door, Cinderella, Lonely, Piece Of Me, Kill The Lights as well.
* TheRival: Music/ChristinaAguilera, who was also originally in ''[[TheMickeyMouseClub The New Mickey Mouse Club]]'' also Music/JessicaSimpson and Mandy Moore fit into this description in the early 00's. Not so much recently...
** Recently Music/LadyGaga, Music/{{Rihanna}}, Music/KatyPerry and Music/{{Kesha}} fit the bill today. Though she is friends with all of them.
* RunningGag: The Gh: My Prerogative dvd has extra's and most of them feature the Astronaut of the Oops video. Love also always makes her crazy (once per album), I Am Britney Jean has Jamie Spears and his duct tape, There is probably more...
* RockStarSong: "Can't Make You Love Me", "Look Who's Talking", "Overprotected", "Outrageous", "Mona Lisa (Both Versions)", "Money, Love and Happiness", "Rock Star" "All That She Wants (Self written verses)", "Rebellion", "Alien", "Work Bitch", "Telephone", "Get Back", "Piece Of Me", "Circus", "Kill The Lights", "Mannequin" and "I Wanna Go".
* {{recut}}: Multiple cuts exist for her Not A Girl, Piece Of Me, Perfume, Gimme More, 3, Womanizer and Till The World Ends videos.
* RecordProducer: Danja, Max Martin, Dr Luke, Will I Am & now David Guetta.
* {{Rockumentary}}: "Time Out With Britney Spears" "Live and More", "Stages:Three Days In Mexico", "Britney Spears: In The Zone", "Chaotic", "For The Record", "I Am the Femme Fatale" and "I Am Britney Jean".
* RuleOfSymbolism: Fully invoked for the "Hold It Against Me" music video.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Hates being alone, thus spends most of her off time seeking a good sane functional non jealous man, who's not threatened by her power, nor a cheater.
* SanitySlippage: During her tragic breakdown from 2006-2008.
* StalkerWithACrush: Her role on How I Met Your Mother and the Radar lyrics.
* ShrinkingViolet: Since her break down she's been more introverted and quiet, as well as quite awkward and nervous both in interviews and performances.
* SequelSong: Now That I Found You for When I Found You, My Baby for Someday, Trip To Your Heart for Heaven On Earth, The Heaven Trilogy: Heaven On Earth, Unusual You, Trip to Your Heart, and Stronger for Baby One More Time. Also her albums "Britney" and "Britney Jean" sort of serve as personal bookends.
* SelfBackingVocalist: Written about in NewBritneyology.com's In Depth articles, particularly used in her song "Shadow."
** Recently "Selfish" and "Don't Keep Me Waiting".
* SelfDeprecation: "Piece Of Me" includes calling herself shameless. Used to do a lot of skits poking fun at her fame/unique style.
** "Lip-Sync + Fake Boobs (SNL)" is one fine example of her Self-Deprecation habit.
** She briefly appeared in a Macy's Christmas advert where wide bunch of different stars and TV personalities were setting up an outlet for the Christmas shopping season, and basically played up her somewhat ditzy image. First seen trying to push open a door labeled "Pull", last seen accidentally pulling the plug on a string of lights that were set up for decoration.
* SelfTitledAlbum: Her third album and her 8th album.
* SelfEmpowermentAnthem: Brave New Girl is a focused song Britney wrote to encourage herself to embrace her new-found freedom as a 21 year old in 2002. Mannequin, Stronger, Don't Go Knockin' On My Door and Lonely also encourages people to get out of bad relationships and find happiness within themselves. Rebellion sees Britney speaking out against controlling people. Touch Of My Hand examines female sexuality away from the male gaze, and finds sexual fulfillment in self love. Spears wrote the song specifically for girls because she felt it was important they discover themselves outside of anyone else's validation. Many of her songs see Britney take on a sexually forward or dominant attitude, particularly Slave 4 U: "I won't deny it, I'm not trying to hide it". Her 8th album examines adulthood, emotional maturity, clarity after breakups and sees Britney rediscovering her religion on the three bonus tracks.
* SexySecretary: One of the personas she uses to test the loyalty of her boyfriend in the "Womanizer" video. The character she plays on How I Met Your Mother,
* SexyWalk: On the stage!
* SexyStewardess: She dresses up as one in the "Toxic" video.
* ShoutOut: The last shot of her "I Wanna Go" video is a shout out to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video.
** There are also shout outs to'' Film/{{Terminator}}'', ''HalfBaked'', and Crossroads in the middle of the video.
** Her VMA performance with Madonna and Christina Aguilera was a callback to Madonna's own 1984 performance of "Like A Virgin."
** The video of "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Ds6b33PTbGxk Criminal]]" feels reminiscent of Film/BonnieAndClyde, complete with the police trying to kill them with machine guns.
* SillyLoveSongs: Recent songs such as "Trip To Your Heart," "Heaven On Earth", "Unusual You" and "Now That I Found You"...and several songs from her first and third albums in particular.
* SingerNamedrop: In "Gimme More", "Intimidated" and "When I Say So".
* SingerSongwriter: Co-wrote the majority of In The Zone and the entirety of Britney Jean. Her Everytime co-writer said she only helped with arrangement and melodies, otherwise everything else was Britney. Wrote Someday in one sitting.
* SmarterThanYouLook: See Obfuscating Stupidity, above. Producers outright state she has a say in her songs and how they are executed. Music video directors have said she comes to them with ideas in place. On the other hand, in 2003 interviews she could not name a producer on In the Zone, saying he was "some guy in England." The vast majority of her co workers insist she works very hard on her albums, picking selecting and evolving the projects. Her managers has insisted numerous times that she is far from an industry puppet and even when she had minimal power, she was still calling the shots. She has stated multiple times that she knew what she wanted from a young age. Had a similar rise to fame as Beyonce yet does not receive anywhere near the same industry respect or credit.
* {{Socially Awkward Hero}}ine: Performs for millions worldwide but comes off incredibly awkward and shy in interviews. Often cannot word sentences properly but can remember hours upon hours of detailed choreography for shows. Has taken some cringeworthy Meet and Greet photos with fans.
* SomethingCompletelyDifferent: Her ventures into pop rock ("I Love Rock N Roll", "Rock Boy," "Rock Me In") and pure rock ("Don't Keep Me Waiting"). Her live rock cover of "You Oughta Know", too. Her habit of putting ballads at the end of heavy dance albums. Freakshow introduced dubstep when it was still fairly underground. Her between albums shift from bubblegum pop to urban sexy pop courtesy of The Neptunes in 2001. In a way, her 2000 VMA performance - starting the show with a tuxedo and a breathy cover of the Stones 'Satisfaction' before bursting out of the tuxedo revealing a flesh coloured body suit and performing a rock-inspired remix of Oops I Did It Again.
** Britney Jean, her eighth album is intentionally personal and from her heart, featuring only two dance tracks. The rest all examine various personal encounters including her recent breakup with Jason Trawick, her breakdown, her fame and her religion.
* StageMom: Lynne Spears encouraged her and her sister to get into show business from a very young age, with Britney in dance classes by age 2 and working nightly on Broadway by age NINE. Spears now encourages her own children's musical talent but has said she will not ever force them into the industry if they don't want to. In one interview she joked that she'd lock them in their rooms till they were 30 if they wanted to be famous!
* StepfordSmiler: Subject of "Lucky" Type A and Type B.
** Some people feel she is this in her Femme Fatale era interviews.
* TheStoic: Refuses to get into feuds, even though it seems most of her contemporaries have something to say about her... Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Ke$ha, and Justin Timberlake have all made somewhat direct or indirect comments regarding Britney in an insulting or rude manner at one point or another, and those are just her contemporaries. She has never said anything rude about or to anyone except during the ''In The Zone'' era, after being provoked for at least five years prior. Most of the time she keeps her head down and does her own thing.
* StrictlyFormula: Her first two albums were this so much they border on [[ExtrudedBookProduct Extruded Music Product.]] Both followed a pattern of singles consisting of the title track, ("...Baby One More Time," "Oops!... I Did It Again") a mid-tempo song ("Sometimes," "Lucky") another up-tempo song with rock and dance flairs ("Crazy," "Stronger"), and a slow syrupy ballad ("From the Bottom of My Broken Heart," "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know."). Although "Born to Make You Happy" wasn't released in the U.S.
** All of her main men featured in her career somehow: She toured with *NSYNC and recorded "What It's Like To Be Me" with Justin, Kevin was in My Prerogative's video and Jason was in Criminal's video. So far, only David has not shown up in any songs or videos.
* StudioChatter: "Is this thing on?" and "Can you turn it up?" on "I Love Rock N' Roll" and "Don't Keep Me Waiting" respectively.
** Oops I Did It Again album also features some studio chatter and random phone conversations with her friends.
* SpoiledSweet: Began a performing school for kids. Usually releases promo singles or remixes even when on break. She is wealthy but shops at discount stores and shies away from leading a flashy lifestyle.
* SuperBowlSpecial: Got paid an obscene amount for doing one of these in the early 00's. This was in relation to her CelebrityEndorsement of Pepsi.
* SurprisinglyGentleSong: Not in the typical hardcore rock sense, but in the break from the dancing your ass off sense sense or happy feelings sense or typical pop sense:
** "Where Are You Now" on Oops, "Everytime" / "Shadow" during In The Zone, "Why Should I Be Sad" at the end of Blackout, "Unusual You" / "Out From Under / "Blur" / "My Baby" on Circus, "Trip To Your Heart" on Femme Fatale and "Passenger" / "Chillin With You" on Britney Jean.
* SurrealMusicVideo: "Hold It Against Me," and "I Wanna Go" so very much. "Boys" also is a bit trippy, as is "Circus" in parts.
* SubduedSection: Lonely, What It's Like To Be Me, I Run Away, Don't Cry, Till It's Gone, off her Britney and Britney Jean records. There are more.
* SmartMark: Britney Spears fans come in two flavours: the more cynical, just for the music kind, and the more thoughtful, sympathetic kind, who love her for her, and all her music.
* TakeThat: Has done three unreleased songs about how much crap Justin Timberlake gave her after he was done with her and sold her out to the media. The songs are called, "Look Who's Talking", "Dramatic" and "Guilty." She implied that he was a momma's boy who placed her very low on his list of priorities and wasn't there for her and then subsequently freaked out when she actually did something about it and dumped him, also indicating her fame bothered him. This however clashes with Justin's version of what went down, which he details on his hit song "Cry Me A River" and the Justified album.
** There was another TakeThat that never came to be. Songwriter Cathy Dennis wrote a song for Britney after hearing Justin's TakeThat song "Cry Me A River" and designed it to be her rebuttal. The song was called "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex," but Britney decided not to record the song. The song was then given to British singer Rachel Stevens, and it became one of her biggest hits.
** "Womanizer", About all her prior lovers..
** The leaked demo "Rock Star" may have been aimed at Fred Durst after he dissed her in "Just Drop Dead".
** "Mannequin" outright states that a guy "can cry cry cry, again-gain gain, [but] my face like a mannequin".
* TakeThatCritics: She's not afraid to give it like she gets it, especially from her third album (Overprotected) onwards, in her SNL specials, her cameos (''Will and Grace'') and beyond, Piece Of Me directly confronts how perverted and invasive paparazzi have been towards her since the start, Kill The Lights is basically a continuation of this, and the If U Seek Amy performance on Femme Fatale Tour has a follow on from that concept, showing Britney standing on a pedestal while dancers with cameras try to sneak upskirt shots.
** She called "Cry Me A River" by Justin Timberlake, pussified, and called out David on stage in vagas.
* TallPoppySyndrome: And how, especially in the media! Australian media loathes her success, going so far as to ask fans outside her shows to look sad for their false reports of people walking out. The Australian public took all her In The Zone singles to #1 and sold out all her Circus Tour shows. Femme Fatale went to #1. Till The World Ends, I Wanna Go, Criminal, Work Bitch and Scream & Shout stayed in the charts for months and months..
* TeenIdol: She was the definitive one in her early years, hitting it big with "...Baby, One More Time" at age 16.
* ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld: "Circus."
--->''There's only two types of people in the world''
--->''The ones that entertain, and the ones that observe''
--->''There's only two types of guys out there''
--->''Ones that can hang with me, and ones that are scared''
* ThisIsASong: "Everytime."
--->''I may have made it rain''
--->''Please forgive me''
--->''My weakness caused you pain''
--->''And this song is my sorry''
** Also "Lucky"
---> "This is a story about a girl named Lucky"
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: "Gimme More." It's ''BRITNEY'' bitch...
** "Work Bitch" applies too.
* TenMinuteRetirement: She was supposed to take a 6 month break after the Hype Backlash of 2001/2002, didn't happen, went straight back to work harder than ever, resulting in the In The Zone era, where she saturated media for two straight years. Was technically on "maternity" leave through periods 2005-2008, did TV shows, Three albums (Blackout, Circus, Original Doll) award shows, a remix album, and at least one mini-tour during this period, and in 2010 she earnt millions of dollars despite doing nothing except a Glee cameo, a perfume and a clothing campaign. She also recorded Femme Fatale during that period.
* ThreeMinutesOfWrithing: Slave, Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know, Till The World Ends, Gimme More.
* ThreeWaySex: The focus of the song "3" and "Girls and Boys".
** AThreesomeIsHot: 3 again.
* TitleOnlyChorus: "Gimme More." (and Womanizer, almost).
* TitleTrack: Oops I Did It Again, Circus, Baby One More Time
* {{Twitter}}: She is one of the most followed celebrities on the social site, [[https://twitter.com/#!/britneyspears 35 million+ strong]].
* TrueCompanions: She has stayed friends with the same set of people since she was a child. Noted in her Live And More and For The Record documentaries. "Chillin With You" And "I Will Be There" discuss this.
* UnknownRival: Known throughout the pop world for never responding to put downs and just keeping her head down while other people will openly talk trash about her. Christina Aguilera is her most particular unknown rival, though some of her mean-spirited, confusing comments came to Spears attention in 2004, who responded with hurt, assuming they had a good friendship. Aguilera apologized for to Spears for her comments shortly after, claiming they were misconstrued.
* UpdatedRerelease: Usually refrains from doing this, with the exception of "Britney" which was re-released in Australia/Oceania with an extended album (17 tracks) and a bonus dvd.
* UnexpectedCharacter: To most of her younger fanbase Ying Yang Twins was very left field. Subverted years later with her much anticipated works with Will I Am and T.I.
* VocalEvolution: Through time she's used many voices, depending on the song and the era, sometimes full bodied, sometimes whisper, sometimes aggressive, sometimes heart felt. While most write her off as minimally talented vocally, her variation and nuance in her performances are what fans love most about her. You won't find many Britney fans who enjoy the showpony, powerhouse vocal performances of Whitney or Adele.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know is set on a beach, with a guy walking around all muscle and shirtless.
** Womanizer shows Britney's love interest in the shower.
* WhatDidIDoLastNight: "Blur" and "Early Mornin'"
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Employs a British accent on "Scream and Shout" and "Work Bitch".
* WeirdnessMagnet: Over her 32 year life, she's been through some crazy highs and lows.
* WolverinePublicity: All her features and the songs she features on always bring success for the people she works with.
* WillNotBeAVictim: The theme and verbalized outright in her "For the Record" rockumentary. "I don't like that, [being called a] victim of my success. I've been *placed* in that category for some reason, and I hate that because I love to see people making the most of their situations."
* AWildRapperAppears: Ying Yang Twins in "Boom Boom", Sabi in "(Drop Dead) Beautiful", Will I Am in "Big Fat Bass", and T.I in "Tik Tik Boom".
** Played with in Brave New Girl and It Feels Nice/Sin City when she's the rapper.
* WomanScorned: "Toxic", "Stronger", "Lonely" and "Womanizer."
** "Dramatic" and "Guilty" would also count.
* WomanofaThousandVoices: One of the reasons people enjoy her music is that she tends to have characters and play roles in every single song, from the crazy party animal who wants nothing more but to have fun (Get Naked, Slave, Freakshow), to the maternal sweet hearted mother who cares for the world (My Baby, Someday, Now That I Found You)
* Workaholic: Even if her fans feel she needs 6 years off to recover from herself. She opts out of that. She composed two seperate albums over both her pregnancy's and she often practises dancing on her few breaks. Her fellow composers note she calls THEM in to lay down tracks and work out her next album, promptly' she also starts tour designs early. She seems hesistant to take time off. She has said in her I Am Britney Jean doco, she likes to work on her birthday and tends to get into trouble when she doesn't have a schedule. She likes to work, and hard.
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: "Brave New Girl" is an example of this. "Changing her M.O". Stronger also mentions how she's better off on her own...
* XtremeKoolLetterz: What U See (Is What U Get) and If U Seek Amy.
* YouAreNotAlone: "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "Dear Diary", "Brave New Girl", "Lucky", "Touch Of My Hand", "Alien", "I Will Be There" were all created for the purpose of relating to her fans...and this trope works well with her "BeYourself" over-all message.
* {{Yandere}}: Her role on How I Met Your Mother.
* YourCheatingHeart:
** "He About To Lose Me" to {{tear jerk|er}}ing effect.
** "Womanizer", "Perfume", "Shattered Glass" and "Guilty" also apply.
