Alan Menken (b 22 July 1949) is a composer and songwriter for theater and film. Beginning with ''Disney/TheLittleMermaid'', for which he wrote both score and songs with lyricist Howard Ashman (the same team who wrote ''Theatre/LittleShopOfHorrors''), he has been the go-to guy for [[DisneyAnimatedCanon Disney musicals]], including ''Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast'', ''Disney/{{Aladdin}}'', ''{{Pocahontas}}'', ''Disney/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame'', and ''Disney/{{Tangled}}''. This has earned him ''eighteen'' AcademyAward nominations, eight of which he won--more Oscars than any other living individual.

After ''Mermaid'''s success, Menken wrote ''Beauty and the Beast'' and began ''Aladdin'' with Ashman before the latter's death in 1991. Since then, Menken has written with a multitude of lyricists, including Tim Rice (''Aladdin'', the {{Screen To Stage Adaptation}}s of ''Beauty and the Beast'' and ''Aladdin''), Jack Feldman (''Film/{{Newsies}}'' and its ScreenToStageAdaptation), Creator/StephenSchwartz (''Pocahontas'', ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'', ''Film/{{Enchanted}}'', the ScreenToStageAdaptation of ''Hunchback''), David Zippel (''Disney/{{Hercules}}'', ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger''), and Glenn Slater (''Disney/HomeOnTheRange'', ''Tangled'', the {{Screen To Stage Adaptation}}s of ''The Little Mermaid'' and ''Film/SisterAct'', ''Series/{{Galavant}}'').

Due to the cancellation of Disney's adaptation of ''Literature/TheSnowQueen'' (later retooled into ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'', with Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez writing songs and Christophe Beck composing score), Menken will provide music for a Creator/DreamWorks movie titled ''{{Lidsville}}''.
