->''Why does my hand have ''breasts'' on it?!''

The story of a boy whose girlfriend is also his right hand. No, not like ''[[ADateWithRosiePalms that]]''.

Seiji Sawamura is a high school [[{{Japanese Delinquents}} delinquent]] -- a rude, disrespectful punk with a "bad dude" air and a skill with fighting that can lay out entire gangs with his "devil's right hand". But underneath his tough guy exterior is a noble soul who won't hesitate to defend an underdog. He's also lonely and unlucky in love -- his reputation is so frightening that no girl he knows (other than 11-year-old neighbor Shiori) wants his attention or to be seen with him.

This state of affairs grates on him -- failure after failure weighs on Seiji's mind, until one day, alone at home, he bemoans the fact that he seems destined to live his life [[ADateWithRosiePalms with only his right hand as his lover]], and swears that he will accept any girl who will have him. When a strange girl's voice echoes "Really?" in the empty room, he is understandably surprised and confused -- but it's nothing on how he feels a few moments later when he discovers that his right hand has turned into a miniature teenaged girl named Midori Kasugano. He ''really'' [[LiteralGenie should have picked a better choice of words]]...

Midori, it turns out, was a perfectly normal girl from another school who idolized Seiji from afar. How she turned into his hand neither knows, but she's happy with the situation even if Seiji isn't.

Despite its bizarre (indeed, borderline-nightmarish) premise and the gang-based violence that kicks it off, ''Midori no Hibi'' is actually a comedy, although it blends a few surprisingly sober and serious elements with its mostly-slapstick humor. There are hints that it will actually develop into a strange kind of love story between Seiji and Midori (who by the third episode habitually wears a tiny T-shirt emblazoned "I (heart) Seiji"); getting there will probably be a trip. Surprisingly, the show is free of the obvious dirty humor it could generate about their relationship.

Now available in the United States under the title ''Midori Days''.

!!This show provides examples of:
* ACupAngst: Midori suffers from this a [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi17/170474-7.html couple]] of [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi54/170536-19.html times.]]
* AdaptationDistillation: The Manga goes off on some long tangents, and introduces so many characters who fall for Seiji [[HoYay (including a boy!)]] that his 'unlucky with love' status becomes more of an InformedFlaw. The much-shorter anime drops the rest of the [=crushes/=][[StalkerWithACrush stalkers]] and limits the love story's focus on Seiji, Midori and Ayase. Said boy is also removed from the equation, [[spoiler:instead retaining both his own original crush on Midori and his desire to make Midori do the right thing and return to her home and family.]]
* AdventurerArchaeologist: Hisashi Sakisaka.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Subverted and defied. Seiji ''looks'' like a bad boy and displays the typical teenage rebelliousness but that's all he does. However, his reputation is such that women shun him rather than being turned on by him.
* AllJustADream: Seiji and Midori both had the same dream: Midori was back in her body, but Seiji ended up as HER right hand. See FreakyFridayFlip below.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Kouta loves Midori. Midori, Ayase, and Shiori love Seiji. And Seiji confessed his love to twenty girls and was rejected by every one.
* AloneAmongTheCouples: Seiji strikes out with a local girl. Then, as if to [[TheWorldMocksYourLoss mock him]], he finds himself surrounded by lovey-dovey couples, while on his way to school. [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-1-page-6.html He doesn't take it well.]]
** The anime version has him get shot down by the same girl, after which, he goes to a movie theater, to sulk. When he realizes he's the only one there without a date, he [[PlayedForLaughs vents his frustration]] on the crowd and storms out.
** And again, in chapter 17, where he finds himself alone in a [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-17-page-6.html cafe full of happy couples.]] Midori tries to cheer him up, the key word being [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-17-page-8.html "tries"]].

* ArmorPiercingSlap: Shiori's step mom belts her one, to show her how much she cares.
* AttractiveBentGender: When Seiji dresses as a girl to catch a pervert on the train, his buddy finds Seiji "just his type". Likewise, when Kota cross-dresses, Seiji finds him incredibly attractive. So did the female gang that forced him into it.
* AudibleSharpness: PlayedForLaughs, when Seiji draws a kitchen knife to cut Midori's bandages, and scares the crap out of the two girls who were trying to avenge their boyfriends!

** It even gets PlayedForLaughs, during the school's ski trip, when she displays her badassery, via [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-48-page-7.html dynamic entry!]]
* BestBeerEver: Rin.
* BettyAndVeronica: Ayase is the Veronica to Midori's Betty for Seiji's Archie.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Averted. Seiji's best friend, Miyahara, tells him about the rumor going around which claims he hurt his right hand [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi3/170450-7.html by punching out a Yakuza's car!]] Seiji becomes exasperated and points out how ridiculous that sounds.
* BigFancyHouse: Midori's
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:Midori loses her memory of being Seiji's hand, but is able to finally confess her love for him in her real body. Ultimately averted in the manga, which ends with Seiji giving Midori the diary she used while she was attached to him.]]
* BlandNameProduct: Game Non Stop, Takamizawa's "Camon IOS" camera, and Play Girl.
* BlankWhiteEyes: How would ''you'' react to meeting Midori...?
* BlindingBangs: Suzuka, Kamaki's right hand woman.
* BlueWithShock: Invoked by various members of the cast, to where it almost becomes the equivalent of [[Manga/AzumangaDaioh Azumanga's]] BlankWhiteEyes.
* BottomlessBladder: Averted for comedy, since Midori has to go ''everywhere'' Seiji goes. And when he lost the use of his other hand too...
** Played straight with Midori, since she's only present on his arm from the waist up. In the manga, this is even [[DiscussedTrope talked about]].
* BromanticFoil: Miyahara.
* BullyHunter: Strong as Seiji is, he only fights with bad people (i.e. other delinquents, who are mostly shown to be real scum) and he protects the weak. [[{{Deconstruction}} Deconstructed]] in that the other gangs start to target the people around Seiji just to challenge him, something Seiji is aware and not proud of.
* CanNotSpitItOut: Midori before she becomes Seiji's hand, and Ayase after Seiji saves her.
* CaptainsLog: Midori's diary, written while Seiji is asleep.
* CaretakerReversal: In one episode, Seiji accidentally drinks a bottle of sake, and Midori tries to take care of him. When he wakes up, he feels great, but Midori is sick.
* CatGirl: A costume, not a "true" catgirl, but nonetheless...
* CatSmile: Nekobe, a minor character, has this effect constantly.
* CensorSteam: The steam from the hot springs neatly obscures Rin's lower body in chapter 14. [[{{Fanservice}} Her breasts are still in full view, though]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Midori took a big jump at the start of the series (which we don't find out until much later). After being a rather extreme ShrinkingViolet for much of her life, when she finds herself attached to Seiji's arm, she takes a leap of faith and confesses her love for him. This, combined with the fact that she doesn't have to be shy since she's hidden from sight most of the time, causes her to go from garden variety ShrinkingViolet to an eccentric, fun-loving, HypercompetentSidekick.
** Seiji himself goes through some throughout the series, moving away from ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption and developing a gentler, more socially apt side, underlined by his becoming less and less critical of Midori as the series goes on. While he tends to blow off Midori's advances as airheaded or insincere, after reading her diary he comes to appreciate the depth and complexity of her feelings, giving him the courage to acknowledge that he appreciates and cares for her as a human being and not just a hand.
** Ayase initially regards Seiji with contempt, believing him to be just another delinquent. After he saves her, from being kidnapped (and possibly raped), her attitude towards him begins to change. The manga version has her fall for him almost immediately afterward, whereas the anime has [[DefrostingIceQueen Ayase's feelings change gradually.]] Both versions reveal that [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-22-page-4.html she's not nearly as harsh as she lets on.]]
* ChekhovsGun: Seiji and Midori think they've gotten Takamizawa to forget about the whole thing. But [[spoiler:his digital camera]] didn't.
* CherryBlossoms: In the opening credits, also in one picture Kota has of Midori
* ChickMagnet: Seiji.
* ClassRepresentative: Ayase in all but actually being the representative. One panel in the manga shows that Ayase isn't the actual class rep, it's just that everyone always looks up to her instead of their real Class Rep.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: [[http://www.anymanga.com/midori-no-hibi/004/011/021/ Seiji on the proper use of guitars.]]
* CostumePorn: Some of Midori and the doll's outfits.
* CoolBigSis: Rin is a brutal and drunken version, but still loving.
* CornerOfWoe: [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-22-page-16.html Invoked by Ayase]], after failing to seduce Seiji with her new swimsuit, which she had chosen with the express purpose of showing off her figure.
* CovertPervert:
** Midori has had some pretty lewd dreams and fantasies, though she doesn't actually get more explicit than ThisAndThat. She also seems pretty eager to help Seiji in the bathroom...
** Ayase happily fantasizes on how Seiji in going to save her from [[spoiler:drowning]], including mouth-to-mouth, and later on, how they'll warm each others bodies while naked (and [[SomethingElseAlsoRises not only the temperature goes up]]).
** Ayase's most blatant moment was when she and Seiji accidentally switch video tapes after running into each other. She was expecting to have a story about a young boy and his faithful dog. She ended up with a piece of Seiji's PornStash. Her response? [[spoiler:''Take notes.'']]
* CranialEruption
* CrossPoppingVeins: more realistically done than usual.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Midori, natch. And her mom.
* DeathGlare: A skill Seiji [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi26/170489-9.html uses]]. When Kouta uses it, it resulted in PuppyDogEyes instead.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Ayase, in the anime version. The manga portrays her as being closer to {{tsundere}} instead.
* {{Delinquents}}: Seiji and his gang, along with the other rival groups.
* DemonHead: Rin pulls this off once or twice.
* DraggedIntoDrag: Kota is saved from physical torture by the Crimson Angels when they decide to force him into dresses. They are instantly smitten with how cute he looks, and start fighting among themselves as to who gets to play dress-up with him.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: [[AttemptedRape The upper panel on]] [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi61/170548-16.html this page]][[FlatWhat .]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: A ''38-year-old man with a son'', no less...
* EagleLand: Lucy Winnlad is an American, you can tell because she has [[WearingAFlagOnYourHead American flag panties]]. Her friend Daniel is [[AmericansAreCowboys so stereotypical]] a Type Two that he takes RefugeInAudacity.
** Also Lucy came to Japan to get away from him.
*** People tend to forget the Native American shaman. He's shown in a surprisingly nice light. He is the only one of an entire crowd of traditional medicine and religious men that knows what really happened to Midori.
* [[EvenEvilHasStandards Even Creepy Otaku Have Standards]]: Takamizawa may be a doll fetishist with some very disturbing attitudes towards women, but even he knows that taking upskirt photos with a cellphone is not acceptable behavior.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Seiji. Not only is he a ChickMagnet, he has a cute boy head over heels for him. And his best friend fell for him when he [[WholesomeCrossdresser went undercover as a girl]] to catch someone who was cutting up girls' skirts.
* FaceOfAThug: Part of the reason why he constantly has a stream of bullies challenging him, which lead to how he became so good at fighting. Unfortunately, this creates hell for him when it comes to dating.
* FalseCameraEffects: Seen in the anime version, mainly during Seiji's fight scenes, which often include ShakyCam effects.
* FanService: Invoked in both the manga and anime versions; particularly chapter 22, where Ayase finally [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-22-page-11.html flaunts her sex appeal]].
** The manga also isn't averse to showing its characters unclothed, ranging from "matter-of-fact" (partial) nudity to full body shots obviously intended as {{Fanservice}}.
* FirstGirlWins: Sorta. See the [[spoiler: BittersweetEnding]] entry near the top.
* FirstKiss: Seiji, inadvertantly to [[spoiler: Ayase]] in chapter 20. It was meant to be a kiss on the cheek, but ends up being [[AccidentalKiss full on the lips]], thanks to [[spoiler: Midori's attempt to stop him.]] [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-20-page-15.html Needless to say.....]]
* FlagBikini: Lucy Winrad, {{expy}} of [[VideoGame/RivalSchools Tiffany Lords.]]
* FlungClothing
* ForSCIENCE: The credo of [[MadScientist Dr. Makinoha Shirou]], as shown [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi24/170486-15.html here.]]
* FreakyFridayFlip: In one episode, Seiji and Midori switch places.
* GaggingOnYourWords: Seiji is incapable of saying "I love you" to Midori, even as a throwaway and joking way.
* GeckoEnding: The anime is much shorter than the manga, and leaves out several females, most importantly Nao Makinoha and Lucy Winradd.
** On the other hand, it happened just before the manga ended, and the final resolution itself is almost identical.
* GenkiGirl: Midori, during her time as Seiji's right hand; which serves as the crux of her character development, considering [[ShrinkingViolet what she was like before.]]
** However, Lucy has her beat by a country mile, as seen when she [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-44-page-9.html easily outpaces Ayase]], during a 10k, [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-44-page-10.html while somersaulting!]]
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: [[ADateWithRosiePalms "The only lover I'll ever have is my right hand..."]]
* GiantFood: While it's not considered giant to anyone else, Midori greatly enjoys having her "favorite choco-banana ice cream in an extra large size" ... of course, until it [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything melts over her head]].
* GirlsAreReallyScaredOfHorrorMovies: Ayase manages to get a date with Seiji, having watched the movie three times beforehand to locate all the scary parts that would justify her giving Seiji a SecurityCling. Unfortunately, it fails every time.
* GratuitousEnglish: Just a phrase here and there.
* GrewBeyondTheirProgramming: Naongu, which is lampshaded by her creator, [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-63-page-14.html Shirou]], when she [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-63-page-15.html developes a conscience.]]
* {{Glomp}}: when done by a girl on one's right arm, can be painful....
* {{Hachimaki}}: Ayase sports one momentarily when she sets out to become Seiji's girlfriend.
* HairColors: Mainly Midori; while Seiji is blonde, a flashback suggests that he bleaches his hair, while all other characters seem to have normal hair colours. Which makes the female lead's unique hair colour more unreal and interesting.
** Notably, in the anime at least, the real Midori's hair is more of a dark green than the bright green of her smaller self...
** Midori's name is written with the kanji for 'beautiful bird', but it's a homophone for 'green'.
* HairTriggerTemper: It's very, very easy to get Seiji riled up, especially if your name is Midori. It's mostly PlayedForLaughs, though.
* HeyItsThatVoice: [[TengenToppaGurrenLagann Kittan]]? What happened to your hand?
** If Shiori ''really'' wants to be friends with Seiji, she should use [[MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha a Starlight Breaker.]]
* HowToBecomeALoveInterest: Ayase uses a bunch of these in one episode to try to get Seiji. HilarityEnsues.
* HyperspaceMallet: Nao has one of truly epic proportions which will knock seemingly anything out with one hit.
* IHaveThisFriend: Ayase finally spits it out.
* ImagineSpot: An interesting take on the trope, where the {{Imagine Spot}}s are presented as a very short movie, complete with title and credits; being a reader of romance novels and manga, Ayase's also take the form of shojo manga starring her and Seiji. In the manga, Kota is prone to these - and he gets frustrated not only because he's [[EvenTheGuysWantHim imagining himself with Seiji]], but he's somehow subordinate to Midori.
* IncrediblyLamePun: Yes, he made a "helping hand" [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi3/170450-18.html joke.]]
** How about Midori? It's Japanese for green. Guess what Midori's hair color is.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: Kamaki Rina seems to love Seiji's old brutal ways, [[http://www.anymanga.com/midori-no-hibi/006/007/013/ just look at that face.]]
* InvulnerableKnuckles: Played straight in an urban legend about how Seiji hurt his infamous "demon right hand", while punching through a Yakuza's ''car''.
* JamesBondage: Osamu and Kouta exist to be taken hostage to lure Seiji into fights.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Seiji.
* {{Joshikousei}}: All of the girls to varying degrees, but mainly invoked by Ayase, who's rarely seen outside her school uniform.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Over and over! [[spoiler:Midori even used the fact that she couldn't remember a particular day when it was said she went back to her old body as proof that should she go back, she will forget everything about her time on Seiji's hand.]]
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: Seiji thinks that his problem is not being able to get a girlfriend, but that's actually just a symptom of his general inability to interact non-violently with others. Having to protect Midori and her secret, and deal with wacky people he can't just punch, brings out his better qualities.
* LostInCharacter: In one chapter, Seiji and his friends skip school to watch a film shoot featuring their favorite actor, Aikawa Shou. The actor playing Shou's {{yakuza}} underling isn't impressing the director, so the director looks around and immediately casts Seiji and the others as the delinquents. They go to Shou and ask for advice on how to act, and he tells them, "When you're given a role, you have to become that role completely." Cue them completely overreacting during Shou's death scene. HilarityEnsues.
* MadScientist: Shirou Makinoha, who's obsessed over how Midori ended up on Seiji's hand.
** Most disturbing moment: [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi25/170487-13.html when he sprays Midori with glue]] (which looks [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything weird]] [[{{Squick}} for glue]]).
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: subverted by Nao Makinoha, she has more interest in Midori than Seiji.
* MagicalGirlfriend: Midori, who becomes [[LoveInterest Seiji's]] right hand.
* MagicalNativeAmerican: The Indian WitchDoctor is the only one to correctly identify Midori's condition.
* MagneticGirlfriend: Midori again.
* MeaningfulName: Nekobe, leader of the Crisom Angels, has a constant CatSmile.
* MegatonPunch: Hoo boy, Ayase's a pro when it comes to these. They're justified or, at least, understandable given the circumstances.
** She delivers a brutal one after Seiji [[spoiler: [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-20-page-15.html accidentally steals her first kiss!]]]]
** The next one happens shortly after he recovers from [[spoiler: sleeping pills]] and finds her straddling him; which caused him to [[spoiler: [[SomethingElseAlsoRises get an erection.]]]] She becomes flustered and decks him.
** She gives him one more, when they get lost during the school's ski trip, and end up at [[spoiler: a love hotel.]] She gets startled by a bug, while she's in the bath, which prompts him to check on her. When she [[SecurityCling glomps onto him]], it takes them seconds to realize she's stark naked; upon which, Seiji gets sent into orbit.
** Then there's the bastard who took advantage of her, [[CovertPervert while pretending to coach her.]] Ayase finally sees through his bullshit [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi66/170556-19.html and dispenses justice.]]
** Miyahara gets one too, near the end of the anime version, when he [[ItMakesSenseInContext starts waving porn vids around]], [[PlayedForLaughs while asking Ayase for help!]]
* MemeticBadass: In-universe example: Seiji's reputation around the school, specifically regarding his right hand. When he pretends it's broken to hide Midori, the stories [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q5TZWCcwVU only get wilder]].
* MinorLivingAlone: Seiji lives alone, since his parents are said to be traveling abroad and his older sister, Rin, lives with her boyfriend. She drops by, every other month or so, to give him enough funds to cover food and expenses.
* ModestyTowel: Seiji wears one ''in his own bathtub''. Normally would be an {{egregious}} example of the trope, but it's perfectly [[JustifiedTrope justified]] here since there's a girl on his arm. (And then the towel [[NakedPeopleAreFunny falls off . . .]])
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: Rin to her kid brother, Seiji. But Seiji is usually this towards all other gangs.
* NerdsAreVirgins: [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi57/170541-11.html So that's what breasts look like.]]
* NoblewomansLaugh: From an 11-year-old Shiori in a leather domme outfit, yet...
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: Takamizawa quickly loses interest in a girl that looks like his favorite doll when he learns that she's actually a fearless martial artist.
* NostalgicMusicBox: Midori has a music box on her bedside table where her real body is laying. Its melody is heard once or twice coming from the box itself when her mother opens it, but the rest of the time the melody is used in Midori's flashbacks.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Seiji's first attempt to return Midori to her comatose body made her mother faint on the spot and nearly got him ''lynched'' by a horde of angry maids.
* ObliviousToLove: Averted. Seiji is repeatedly made aware of Midori's feelings, but he brushes her off due to her size and because she's attached to his right arm, which he explains (albeit bluntly) during the first episode.
** He can't help but be aware of [[BrattyHalfPint Shiouri's]] crush on him, because she pesters him about it every chance she gets, when he wishes she'd find someone her own age and leave him alone.
** Seiji also asks Ayase if she was serious about being in love with him, which she denies by saying it was joke. He doesn't believe her, at first. 'til she begins acting disinterested in him. At which point, he let the matter drop.
** And though Lucy's wild about him, she isn't his type. Plus, his best friend, Miyahara, has a crush on her. So Seiji tries to help him get together with her.
* OcularGushers: Seiji invokes this whenever he's depressed about not having a girlfriend. The first episode of the anime shows him [[PlayedForLaughs stuffing his face amidst a crying spell.]]
* [[OfCorpseHesAlive Of Corpse He's Conscious]]: One manga chapter deals with Midori dealing with household issues while Seiji's knocked out due to drinking some tequila. This includes having to drag Seiji's body over to greet a pizza delivery man and a textbook salesman and fighting off a theif that broke into Seiji's home.
* OlderThanHeLooks: Karate master Aoi Sakajima, a manga-only character who looks and acts like a 10 year old. The only reason people actually study under him is because he's so cute.
* {{Otaku}}: Shuichi Takamizawa, a doll otaku who covets Midori
* OutOfGenreExperience: Feudal-era Japan with Seiji as a wanted swordsman during, Days Special.
* PantyShot: Several, during the {{chikan}} incident, including Yukari and Ayase's. Midori and her friends as well, during the locker room scene, in Midori's [[{{Flashback}} flashback chapter.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: Seiji's parents are said to be traveling abroad, and his big sister lives with her boyfriend, leaving him on his own.
* ParentWithNewParamour: Seiji helps Shiori get over her initial dislike of her new mother.
* PedestrianCrushesCar: PlayedForLaughs when Seiji's best friend, Miyahara, tells him about [[MemeticMutation the rumor]] going around the school that says he injured his right hand [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q5TZWCcwVU by punching out a Yakuza's car!]]
* {{Porn Stash}}: A couple of chapters in the manga deal with Midori clearing out Seiji's collection of adult magazines / tapes.
* PrecociousCrush: Shiori's efforts to win Seiji's affection, especially in episode 6.
* PowerPerversionPotential: See FetishFuel above.
* PuppyDogEyes: Often invoked by Kouta, and occasionally, Midori.
* QuiveringEyes: Midori, usually PlayedForLaughs, or to ratchet up the {{moe}} factor.
* RedBaron: Seiji is known in town as 'Mad Dog Sawamura'. His right hand got a RedBaron of its own, being called the 'Devil's Right Hand'.
* RefugeInAudacity: Daniel's extreme condescension towards non-Americans (including trying to cheat in blatantly obvious ways and expecting them to work) combined with his frequent use of racist slurs are just so over-the-top ridiculous that they'd only seem believable in a period piece.
* RepeatCut: [[spoiler:(Ayase hugging Seiji when she confesses to him in the anime.)]]
* RescueRomance: Ayase develops a romantic interest in Seiji, after he rescues her from a gang.
** In the manga, it wasn't quite a romantic one when he saved her. When he took a beating to save a friend and ensure said friend wouldn't get kidnapped to draw him out again, however, she started to understand him more and fall for him.
* RunningGag: Pretty convenient how Ayase's [[IHaveThisFriend "friend"]] always seems to [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-8-page-2.html skip out on her]], which always leaves her [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-22-page-9.html with an extra ticket]] she can't simply throw away. Of course, [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial Seiji doesn't HAVE to go]] if he doesn't want to, she just figures she should throw the offer out there. [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-8-page-4.html Suuuurrrrreee.]]
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Takamizawa uses his glasses to hide his Otaku obsession. The lenses will crack to show that his emotions are becoming too much to contain, then appear undamaged when he has control again. When he's being sincere but still scary, one lens will clear while the other is opaque.
** Rin, whenever plotting something embarassing for Seiji.
* {{Schoolgirl Lesbians}}: Kamaki and Suzuka.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Seiji desperately wants a girlfriend, but is completely oblivious to Midori's and Ayase's feelings for him
** At least with Ayase, it's at least understandable given how [[{{Tsundere}} hot and cold]] she treats Seiji. However, given how much Midori [[LoveFreak talks about love]], it boggles the mind how he can miss it.
*** He doesn't mis it, he just doesn't reciprocate the feeling. Also it's quite possible Seiji deems Midori's "love freakness" as insincere or jokingly.
*** Well, [[AnguishedDeclarationOfLove he does get better.]]
* ShoutOut: (Episode 4's visit to a "figurine shop" briefly displays recognizable tributes to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Rei Ayanami]], ''Manga/CardcaptorSakura'' and at least a dozen other anime girls; there's also a parody of the Toho Studios standard movie opening. Also, in chapter 57 in the manga, there were two characters who were clearly cosplaying as Naruto Uzamaki from {{Naruto}} and Monkey D. Luffy from ''OnePiece'')
** The Makinohas were flush with these. [[GiantRobo A robot controlled by wristwatch?]] Check. [[Franchise/{{Gundam}} A cyborg that's mobile without legs,]] [[Manga/AstroBoy had feelings,]] and the head is [[CoreFighter self-sustained?]] Check. [[MechaMooks A bunch of mass-produced androids]], that suspiciously looks like something from [[{{Macross}} Zentradi?]] Check.
** [[OnePiece Crocodile's Hook]] appears on [[http://tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi25/170487-7.html this page.]]
** And [[GashBell Gash]]'s book pops up on [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi37/170507-7.html this one]]
** Or the [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi57/170541-5.html Final Fantasy X's Yuna and Rikku.]]
** A manga version of ''Literature/AClockworkOrange'', [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi46/170522-7.html pops up here.]]
** Rin [[FistOfTheNorthStar pulls a Shin]] [[http://www.tenmanga.com/chapter/MidorinoHibi40/170512-8.html on a biker who was unfortunate enough to overtake her]].
** Volume 4's cover has Seiji [[http://www.anymanga.com/midori-no-hibi/004/ wearing a sweater with]] [[Music/TheWho The Who]] on it.
** Lucy and Kamaki bear more than a striking resemblance to [[VideoGame/RivalSchools Tiffany and Chairperson]], respectively.
** Lucy reminds one physically, of [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Winry]]. The fact that her last name is Winrad might suggest that this is intentional.
** There's the Beniko chick from Midori's school, who looks a helluva lot like Benio from OuranHighSchoolHostClub. [[NamesTheSame Name's (almost) the same]], even!
* ShownTheirWork: When the Native American shaman's house is shown there is a Tipi in his yard. However he lives in South Dakota making his tribe one of the few that actually used Tipis.
* ShroudedInMyth: Seiji thanks to his friend's constant rumor spreading.
* SilentBob: Nao. Often says volumes with actions and usually says no more than two words when she does speak.
* SnowMeansLove: [[spoiler:The last episode of the anime.]]
* SparklingStreamOfTears
* SpinOff: ''Aoi Destruction'', which followed the adventures of the [[DudeLooksLikeALady trap]] dojo owner and his [[BigGuy colossal]] son.
* SqueakyEyes
* StealthClothes: Takamizawa; he doesn't wear the "standard" outfit, but they're clearly Stealth Clothes anyway.
* StupidSexyFlanders: Kouta is often squicked by his crush on Seiji, particularly after the ImagineSpot where he found himself fantasizing about being Seiji's ''left'' hand.
* SuggestiveCollision: Played with and subverted twice:
** The first incident happens when Ayase invites Seiji to her house for a [[ThroughHisStomach home cooked meal.]] After several failed attempts to get him to notice her, she gives in, [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-42-page-15.html slips]], bumps into Seiji, [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-42-page-17.html and ends up like this.]] At least, til Seiji notices [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-42-page-18.html the kitchen's on fire!]]
** It happens again, after they get lost in the mountains, during the school's ski trip, and end up [[spoiler: at a love motel.]] When Seiji tries to turn out the lights, he activates [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-49-page-12.html the bed's controls]], causing Ayase to [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-49-page-13.html literally fall]] [[http://manga.animea.net/midori-no-hibi-chapter-49-page-14.html right in his lap!]] The moment gets ruined when [[spoiler: [[Nao's father appears.]]
* TemptingFate: Seiji swore in the first page of chapter 3 not to get into a fight ever again. Guess what happens on the next page....
* ThatPoorCat: Repeatedly, in the anime version.
* [[TheydCutYouUp They'd Cut You Up]]: Well, ''off'' at least...
* ThroughHisStomach: Ayase, in the throes of her crush on Seiji, [[BlatantLies "accidentally"]] brings an extra lunch and has no choice but to offer it to him.
* ThrowItIn: InUniverse, Seiji's gang gets minor parts in a movie featuring their favorite actor, and get a little ''too'' into it.....
* TrainingFromHell: Rin put Seiji through a form of this as a child.
* TheTrickster: Seiji's elder sister.
* TroubledButCute: Seiji.
* {{Tsundere}}: Ayase towards Seiji, and Seiji to Midori -- especially in the manga. Shiori is also a tsundere to Tohyama.
* UnwantedHarem: twice as large in the manga, including one guy
** Kouta has his own UnwantedHarem in Nekobe and the Crimson Angels, a gang of four female delinquents.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Zigzagged. Seiji's delinquent image stands in stark contrast to the nice and peaceful kid that he was in his childhood. Subverted in that anyone who gets to know him finds out he still has a heart of gold, it's just that it's hidden under a thick layer of anti-social behavior which scares everyone away.
* VisualPun: A possible example occurs when Seiji is punched to the ground in a bowling lane. Does this mean the gang member scored a strike?
** One that's much less ambiguous - during the manga, Ayase is sitting on Seiji's lap after he's been knocked unconscious. She goes in for a kiss right as he wakes up. She has a shocked look on her face - and a large banana appears in the background.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: When Seiji [[CrashIntoHello meets]] Lucy, he sees her stars-and-stripes panties. The comparison image? Film/{{Rocky}} wrapped in the same flag.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Quite a few times in the manga: Seiji does this a couple times to catch a subway pervert and to raise some money; Kouta does this too many times to count
* WideEyedIdealist: Kota; just look at [[http://puu.sh/1Dbj this]].
* WidgetSeries
* WomanScorned: You don't want to go near Midori when she's angry....
* YaoiFangirl: In the manga, Seiji's first crush, Yukino, ends up becoming this
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: When Seiji refuses to sell Midori to a famous figure collector for half a million yen, the collector tells the other figure {{otaku}} that such devotion should be an example to all. Cue awkward photo with Midori-puppet-wearing otaku. As a BrickJoke, when Takamizawa brings Seiji to show how Midori has inspired him to follow his dreams, the others there are impressed that the "God of doll otaku" was there to wish Takamizawa well, with Seiji strenuously objecting to the nickname.
