->''Hello, there! I'm a [[TransformationTrinket magical stick]] of [[BlatantLies love and justice]], [[LivingWeapon Magical Ruby-chan!]] [[KidnappedByTheCall Do you want to be a magical girl?]] What do you think? Become a magical girl, join forces, and [[HeroicComedicSociopath fight all that I deem evil!]]''
-->--'''Kaleido Ruby'''

A SpinOff manga of a well-known {{Eroge}}, which features the TokenMiniMoe of said game as a MagicalGirl... Wait, [[Franchise/LyricalNanoha where have we heard this before...?]]

The [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Ordinary Elementary School Student]] Illya lives together with her older brother Shirou and her two Guardians. She is a good sprinter and enjoys watching MagicalGirl anime. One day while she is bathing, she ponders about being a MagicalGirl herself, flying around with magic, [[BigBrotherAttraction seducing her brother]], then suddenly...

Her brother comes into the bath... and is knocked out by a talking MagicWand, which introduces itself as "Magical Ruby-chan". Through a combination of sweet-talking, lies, and brute force, it tricks Illya into signing a contract with it and turns her against her will into a MagicalGirl. To make it worse, she is beaten by the former master of Ruby, Rin Tohsaka, who has come to collect the wand, only to find out that Illya's contract cannot be canceled without Ruby's consent. Unable to reclaim Ruby, Rin instead forces Illya to become her servant, who shall help her to collect the 'Class Cards': seven mysterious cards which possess the power to summon the spirits of legendary heroes, and which are currently running wild in Illya's home town...

It's largely an AffectionateParody, both of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' and magical girl tropes in general, and doesn't take itself seriously at first. [[GrowingTheBeard And then it does.]]

An anime adaptation of the series aired as part of the Summer2013Anime season. A second season (adapting ''2wei!'') is airing as part of the [[Summer2014Anime Summer 2014 Anime season]].
----
!!This series contains examples of:
* ActionGirl: Illya, Miyu and Kuro are young girls who kick the butts of deadly mages and super-powered mythological figures.
* ACupAngst: The flat chested Sella freaks out in one chapter about her chest being so much smaller than the well-built Leysritt.
* AffectionateParody: Takes the CrapsackWorld of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' and turns it into a LighterAndSofter MagicalGirl series.
* AlternateUniverse:
** Takes place in an alternate version of the ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' universe [[spoiler:in which the Einzberns never obtained help from the Tohsaka and the Matous to complete the Holy Grail ritual and eventually abandoned the Heaven's Feel plan.]] As it turns out, the cards Illya collects are the same "templates" used to summon the Servants in ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight''.
*** [[spoiler:It's implied by Kuro that the Tohsakas were indeed involved with the war, but the Holy Grail ritual had ended abruptly. The lack of support from the other families stems from Rin's own lack of knowledge, rather than a direct lack of involvement. Kuro also implies that Kiritsugu abandoned his ideal of [[TheNeedsOfTheMany killing one to save the many]], most likely to save his family.]]
** [[spoiler:Miyu herself]] is from a third universe, summoned by the incomplete Grail ritual in Prisma Illya's world to serve as a Grail conduit. Participants of that universe eventually cross over to take their conduit back. [[spoiler:Their world is dying, and they need the Holy Grail to save it.]]
* ArrowCatch: Bazett catches one of the magical arrows fired by Kuro in her bare hands.
* ArtEvolution: In terms of quality, both of its sequels look much better than the ''Fate/kaleid''. While Zwei streamlined the art style of its characters, particularly the eyes and faces, Drei refined much of it, giving the series a modern look and feel.
* {{Badass}}: Bazett, who punches out more powerful mages, magical girls, and super powered servants with her bare hands.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: All the girls' nipples and nether regions are entirely non-visible thanks to conveniently steamy baths.
* BeachEpisode: Chapter 18 has all the girls going to the beach for a bit of silly fun.
* BeamSpam: A popular strategy for the magical girls is to fire dozens of magical blasts at their enemies. Caster, as in ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'', takes it to absurd degrees by creating enough magical blasts to fill the entire sky.
* TheBechdelTest: Amusingly, inverted in the anime. There are hardly any men in the series (Berserker, some of the Assassins, Shirou and Waver Velvet, Kiritsugu is mentioned but not shown as is the Grand Master of the Mage's association in London) so the odds of two of them meeting and talking about anything other than anything other than the female main characters is astronomical.
* BitingTheHandkerchief: Luvia bites her handkerchief in disgust while explaining how Sapphire abandoned her for Miyu.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Inevitable due to the parody nature of the franchise, though this happens less and less as the "seasons" go by. Still, it sometimes results in gems like the following:
--> '''Suzuko:''' "Isn't this main character treatment?"
--> '''Nanaki:''' "This is pretty ballsy coming from a mere supporting player!"
* BrickJoke:
** [[spoiler:Luvia]], angry about the destruction done by [[spoiler:Bazett,]] thinks up a way to ruin [[spoiler:her]] in revenge. Come two and a half chapters later, [[spoiler:she's billed for the damage, her credit cards are frozen, and she's reduced to an ice pop vendor.]]
* BrotherSisterIncest:
** Illya has a crush on her brother Shirou in this continuity as well, going so far as to contemplate using [[LovePotion magic]] to snare him before one of the other girls does.
** [[spoiler:Illya's copy/sister Kuro also has no problem making out with Shirou against his will.]]
* ButtMonkey:
** Rin and Luvia usually get easily knocked out of fights despite both being powerful mages.
*** Averted in the [[spoiler:Saber Alter]] fight in the anime. [[spoiler:Rin manages to hold her own against Saber Alter in close combat, and Rin and Luvia manage to destroy Saber's armor, despite ''being immune to most magic''. Granted, they had Ruby and Sapphire helping and that Saber didn't seem to take them too seriously at first, but that doesn't change that they fought the physically strongest Servant ''and nearly won''.]]
** Shirou also ends up getting beaten up in ''almost every chapter he appears''. In the family hierarchy, he actually ends at number 6, below the maids.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: Illya's parents went out of their way to prevent her from becoming involved in the world of mages. Despite this, Rin and Ruby end up getting Illya involved in collecting the Class Cards from the long abandoned Grail ritual anyway.
* CanonForeigner: Every character is a version of a ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' counterpart, except for Miyu and the Ainsworths. [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg And Tanaka.]]
** [[JustifiedTrope Justified,]] all CanonForeigner characters [[spoiler:came from an AlternateUniverse.]]
* CatGirl: Rin gets cat ears when transformed into Kaleido Ruby. Luvia meanwhile becomes a "Dog Girl" when transformed into Kaleido Sapphire.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Miyu's [[spoiler: BrokenAce]] aspect is more apparent in the anime early on.
* ChekhovsGun: Remember that [[spoiler:giant swamp that Rin and Luvia fall into in Zwei? They use it later to catch Kuro.]]
* ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve: The magical girl powers work entirely on belief. For instance, Illya is able to fly because she thinks she can, and Miyu can't because she keeps getting distracted by the laws of physics.
** InvokedTrope in 3rei, Illya realizes the Ainsworth family has taken away [[spoiler: the ability for children in their world to believe/dream.]]
* {{Cliffhanger}}: At the end of 2wei: [[spoiler: Miyu is taken by soldiers who are fighting the Holy Grail War from her AlternateUniverse.]] ToBeContinued in 3rei...
* ClingyMacGuffin: A contract with Kaleido Ruby and Kaleido Sapphire cannot be cancelled without their consent. And while they're happy to abandon Rin and Luvia, they absolutely refuse to let Illya and Miyu quit.
* CloningBlues: [[spoiler:Kuro is the suppressed memory/destiny of Illya as the Holy Grail conduit given form.]] She spends a good part of 2wei angry and bitter over not getting to be the "real" one.
* ClothingDamage: The heroines' outfits end up getting ripped apart by explosions and debris anytime a fight gets serious.
* CoolHorse: Miyu gets a {{Pegasus}} to ride on anytime she uses the Rider Class Card.
* [[spoiler: CrapsackWorld: The world Miyu comes from, ruled by TheMagocracy.]]
* {{Crossover}}: Has one with ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'' known as 'Lyrical Nanoha x Prisma☆Illya'' or simply ''Nanoha x Fate''.
* CurbstompBattle:
** Illya unlocks a portion of her sealed power during the battle with True Assassin to ''nuke'' every enemy in the area in one hit.
** Bazett takes on Rin, Luvia, Kuro, Illya and Miyu at once, and the best they can do is fight her to a draw.
** [[spoiler: Illya with Caster install vs Beatrice Flowerchild and her Berserker install. Illya never stood a chance. Also a bit ironic because normally the TheBerserker class is [[TacticalRockPaperScissors WEAK]] against the Caster class because of their low magical resistance. Too bad for Illya, Beatrice installed a Berserker that [[NighInvulnerability BYPASSES]] [[NoSell THIS]] (THOR).]]
* CutenessProximity:
** Illya goes... a little crazy around maids.
** [[MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha Nanoha]] in the crossover also sets her off, though not to the same... extreme.
* DanceBattler: [[spoiler:Archer!Illya,]] due to using [[spoiler:[[VisualNovel/FateStayNight EMIYA's]]]] fighting style.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Illya's [[spoiler:[[EleventhHourSuperPower dual wand wielding]] at the end of 2wei, which caused internal damage to her that Ruby had difficulties healing. She wanted to use it again in 3rei if she could get her hands on Sapphire, to which Ruby immediately replied that she is forbidden from doing so.]]
** Illya increases her power [[spoiler:in this form by using her nerves, along with other organs, as pseudo magic circuits.]] [[MythologyGag Sounds a lot like a certain somebody, doesn't it]]?
* DarkMagicalGirl: Kuro, the rival "Dark Illya" who shows up at the beginning of 2wei. [[spoiler:She turns out to be Illya's suppressed memories of being a Homunculus built to serve as the Grail conduit, and she'll die if she doesn't have a regular supply of Mana or someone takes the Archer Card that gives her form.]]
** [[spoiler:She wasn't the only one either. Miyu is later revealed to be given this role with her backstory, however the main time she was against Illya was at the beginning when she was TheRival.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Central characters in ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' are demoted to minor roles uninvolved with the main plot. Sakura for instance is just an ordinary student Illya hangs out with, and former {{Protagonist}} Shirou is just Illya's clueless big brother.
* DrJerk: Caren Ortensia cameos as the school nurse, where she has a tendency to consider patients' injuries 'boring' and ask they get hurt much more badly next time they come to see her.
** To add insult to non-injury, she often tells visitors to get lost because "healthy people make her sick."
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Illya's tears in her eyes pleading for Shirou to snap out of the drug induced trance as he pretty much forces himself on her.
* [[DontThinkFeel DON'T THINK IMASINE]] [[{{Engrish}} (sic)]]: Illya's advice to Miyu in regard to {{Flight}}. Miyu has difficulty learning to fly because her magical paradigm [[MagicVersusScience leans too heavily toward science]].
* DontTryThisAtHome: While Illya's team was wrapping up their CloudCuckoolander team member to prevent her from screwing up their cake:
-->'''Nanami:''' "Kids, be good and don't imitate this please."
* DoubleKnockout: Illya and Kuro's dodgeball match.
* DualWielding: [[spoiler: Illya dual-wielding Ruby and Sapphire in an EleventhHourSuperPower.]]
** [[spoiler: The twin blades [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Kanshou and Bakuya]].]]
* DynamicEntry: Illya seems to be fond of these at the ends of arcs.
** But even her [[DynamicEntry Dynamic Entries]] are no match for [[spoiler:her mother Irisviel, who '''''jumps a [[CoolCar Mercedes SL300 "Gullwing"]] into the scene!''''']]
*** [[spoiler:Now Miyu has taken a turn at this and saved Illya from Bazett. [[CurbStompBattle Not for long, sadly.]]]]
* EasyAmnesia: Tanaka is introduced with amnesia.
* EmpathicWeapon: Kaleido Ruby and Kaleido Sapphire are the [[{{Boke And Tsukkomi Routine}} Laurel And Hardy]] of MagicalGirl weapons.
* EquivalentExchange: It's the Nasuverse, what were you expecting? [[AvertedTrope Seems to be averted]] with the Kaleidostick wielders, however.
** [[JustifiedTrope Possibly justified]], in that the Kaleidosticks supplies its prana via [[spoiler:[[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Second Magic.]]]]
** [[spoiler:Rin actually ends up expending most of her jewels, and is forced to take a job... As Luvia's maid.]]
* EroticDream: Illya has one about [[BrotherSisterIncest Shirou]] which leads to her [[LesYay kissing Miyu]] while she's still half-asleep. And then just [[CrowningMomentOfFunny digging herself in deeper]].
-->'''Illya:''' "So-so-so-sorry, Miyu! I mistook you for my brothe... I-I mean not that I...! It's nothing like that! It was a dream! [[GratuitousEnglish Do-ri-mu!]]"
* EveryoneIsRelated: One page indicates that [[spoiler:Miyu, Rin and Luvia know who Shirou is (even though they didn't know Illya.) And he looks like Miyu's brother[[note]]Or rather, he is Miyu's brother in Miyu's home universe, and we never met Shirou's biological family in Illya's universe[[/note]].]]
* EvilTwin: Kuro from the second season, a dark-skinned version of Illya with Archer's powers [[spoiler:representing Illya's suppressed identity as a Mage / Grail conduit]]. At first Kuro tries to kill Illya in order to replace her, only to [[DefeatMeansFriendship move in as Illya's "cousin" after being defeated]] and develop a friendly SiblingRivalry with Illya instead.
** Later we can learn that Kuro is [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope a subversion]] as she is not evil but merely very dissatisfied with the fact that she took form on Illya's whim, purely because of Illya's [[IJustWantToBeNormal paradoxical wish fulfilled by her own magical power]], and that she might disappear completely if Illya's wish is ever completely fulfilled. With anger over something this serious, it is of no surprise she tried to harm Illya (to stop her from being able to fulfill the wish completely) and that she is very blunt with her (because she can't harm her now, and is trying to stop her from wanting to be normal again).]]
* {{Expy}}: A pair of twins, the elder of whom is a [[GenkiGirl excitable]] [[BatmanGambit schemer]] and the latter of whom is a polite DeadpanSnarker? Yup, [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} Kohaku and Hisui]] exist in this universe as the magical sticks Ruby and Sapphire.
** Given a nod in the anime, where a CastingGag sees NaokoTakano (Kohaku) playing Ruby and MiyuMatsuki (Hisui) playing Sapphire.
* {{Fanservice}}: Some BarbieDollAnatomy and extremely magical skirts in the first season, and more in the second, of both the girls and Rin and Luviagelita.
** Parodied '''and''' taken UpToEleven in the first anime special. Rin and Illya in gym clothes for no reason. Rin and Illya's magical girl forms analyzed in maximum detail. Illya in that cat costume, forced to take sexy poses by Ruby.
* FieldOfBlades: One shows up in Episode 6. [[spoiler:That is [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Unlimited Blade Works]], [[MentalWorld Archer's Reality Marble]], and the source of his [[MagikarpPower Projection magic]]. [[UnskilledButStrong The most that Illya uses it for is summoning several of its weapons]] [[PossessionImpliesMastery and utilizing its weapon experience ability]] to fight Saber face-to-face.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Irisviel mentions the [[spoiler:Holy Grail War]] to Kuro and Illya, [[spoiler:Miyu]] gives a surprised reaction. What makes this significant is that [[spoiler:no one else makes the same reaction. Kuro's indifference is justified, while Illya gives a proper reaction of confusion.]] It takes until 3rei for this to get a proper explanation.
* FullContactMagic: [[spoiler:Bazett's]] fighting style.
* GenreSavvy: Illya spent her entire life watching MagicalGirl animes, and it shows.
* GottaCatchThemAll: The Class Cards.
* GratuitousGerman: Rin & Luvia's spells.
* IconicOutfit: [[spoiler:Card users are given one when a card is installed.]]
** [[spoiler:Illya and Kuro wear a modified version of Archer's red [[BadassLongcoat sort-of longcoat]] and armor when utilizing its install.]]
** [[spoiler:When the Saber Class Card is installed, Miyu gets [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Saber's blue battle dress]], whereas Illya becomes [[FateUnlimitedCodes Saber Lily]].]]
** [[spoiler:The Rider install gives Illya a nifty EyepatchOfPower, whereas the Caster install lacks its trademark hood.]]
** [[spoiler:Illya's Lancer install is otherwise identical to the original, however.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Illya has a few moments of this, particularly after the powers sealed inside her start acting up.
** This infuriates Kuro, and Illya realizes this isn't just a slap in the face to her existence, but to Miyu as well.
** [[spoiler:Miyu herself]] is someone for whom her brother wished this, since at that point she was [[BrokenBird too broken]] to wish for it.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: [[spoiler:Kuro needs to be regularly supplied with mana in order to keep from disappearing, and this is essentially her attitude when she explains to Illya that the two of them are the most compatible for the process. Also see IntimateHealing below.]]
* ImagineSpot: Luvia has one of those when [[spoiler:Irisviel invites she, Rin and Miyu to spend some days at the Emiya household since the Edelfelt mansion was destroyed by Bazzet]]. Her line of thought involves [[spoiler:sleeping together with Shirou, having a baby and ''marrying'' him.]]
* InSpiteOfANail: Shirou was still orphaned and adopted by Kiritsugu, despite changes.
* IntimateHealing: [[spoiler:Kuro {{mana}}-drains Miyu by kissing her. She's not hurt, but the fatigue plus embarrassment causes her to collapse.]]
--> '''Kuro:''' "Thanks for the treat!"
** She then proceeds to do this to ''every female in Illya's class''.
** The [[DeusSexMachina "other way"]] from ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' still exists, as Illya learns when she asks if there's any other methods.
* InvisibleToNormals: Averted. When some of the girls from school first see Illya transformed, they recognize her instantly and assume she's doing some bizarre cosplay. [[spoiler:Of course, they might have been somewhat distracted by the fact there were [[EvilTwin two of her]]...]]
** In 3rei, [[spoiler:the castle of Ainsworth]] is invisible to anyone not in its close vicinity.
* LampshadeHanging: A side-effect of Illya's GenreSavvy is that when she spots MagicalGirl tropes at work, she tends to point them out. The biggest example, of course, would be Miyu's NewTransferStudent status.
-->'''Rin:''' "Emiya-kun is one of those people you put in the 'natural disaster' class. I mean, why does he [[AccidentalPervert drag us with him every time he randomly trips]]? What's up with him? Is he [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight some kind of hero from an h-game or what?]]"
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[spoiler:[[VisualNovel/FateStayNight EMIYA]]. While Shirou himself is unimportant to the plot, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVIQLGTVkws a remix of his theme]]]] pops up in Episode 6 of the anime.
** Ironically, Illya's own leitmotif, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78EKF80QhGo Die Lorelei]] is absent from the anime. [[spoiler:But then again, she does get her own Emiya theme, so...]]
* LetsGetDangerous: When Ruby and Sapphire grant "guest" access to Rin and Luvia when they're up against [[spoiler:Saber Alter]]. One would never believe that Magical Girls could be so {{Badass}}.
* LighterAndSofter: ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' is a visual novel where the main characters are constantly hunted in a dramatic MeleeATrois, putting their lives at stake. This manga, however, is light-hearted and focusing on magical girl antics. Illya is a healthy young girl with a normal lifespan, is enjoying herself immensely when she's not running for her life, and her and Shirou's parents are alive.
** The second "season" called 2wei [[spoiler:is mostly the same, being full of light-hearted moments, even though there are some more serious elements like Kuro's existence, Bazett's appearance, and the fight against the 8th card]].
** The third "season" called 3rei [[spoiler: is much more serious. There are still a few comedic elements, especially in the {{Omake}}, but between Miyu being held captive by TheMagocracy, Miyu's universe's Shirou being held captive and tortured by the ones who captured Miyu, and Illya's party being trapped in a CrapsackWorld, it is debatable whether this trope still applies]].
* LimitedWardrobe: Averted, although Rin and Luviagelita tend to wear outfits of the same style as their standard outfits in the visual novels (Luviagelita wears frilly things, Rin tends to show off the ZettaiRyouiki in most of her outfits).
* LiteralSplitPersonality: [[spoiler:Kuro was born from Illya's memories up until she was 8 months old, having already gained the ability to understand communication and knowledge. The memories were sealed so that Illya could have a normal life.]]
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: [[spoiler:Rho Aias. Used by Illya to stop one of Saber Alter's [[SwordBeam Excaliblasts]].]]
* LuckyCharmsTitle
* MagicSkirt: In the first season.
* MakeAWish: [[spoiler:The Grail conduit's power. The solution to a Wish Maker who wants to be normal? Wish to be normal!]]
** The result of that wish was [[spoiler:appearance of [[EvilTwin Kuro]]]].
* MundaneUtility: As the blu-ray exclusive OVA shows, magical girl transformations can be used for other things -- like dancing. Specifically Miyu uses Sapphire to ''dance more naturally'' during her class' turn in the Sports Festival. Oh, and it adds sparkles to her routine too.
* MutuallyExclusiveMagic: Mages have the same limitations that they do in the rest of the NasuVerse. [[MagicalGirl Magical Girls]] aren't as restricted; they're not quite [[RealityWarper Sorcerers]], but they can easily perform feats that would cripple or kill an ordinary magus, with the catch being they require the approval of their EmpathicWeapon. And then there's whatever is sealed inside Illya; the limits aren't yet apparent, but it's shown the ability to crush Epic Spirits with relative ease, her MagicalGirl status seems to be waking it up, and she's ''not happy''.
* MysteriousPast: There is... something sealed inside Illya, that her maids know about. A vast power that goes way beyond "MagicalGirl" and that the recent nonsense seems to be waking up. When she remembers pieces about it, she tries to go back to forgetting.
** Miyu also is a "something." It's mentioned that she required an UndeadTaxExemption; and like Illya; she can manifest cards within herself. Kaleido Ruby comments that if Miyu had used her true power in their initial sparring, Illya would have been creamed. It then asks if Illya knows just what Miyu is. [[spoiler:In 3rei it is revealed that she is Shirou's "original" sister, and the Holy Grail of her world.]]
* MythologyGag: Several ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' gags pop up. A few of the more prominent:
** Rin starts out with the class card for Archer, her Servant from the game. Her rival, Luvia, starts out with Lancer's, Archer's most common rival.
** Rin and Illya inverting the famous 'Are you my master?' scene, with the standing figure ''ordering'' the sitting one to be her ''slave''.
** Rider is the first Servant to be defeated on-screen. As usual.
** The "I will 'go home'" from Rin's letter.
** The "[[GratuitousEnglish Liner]]" is a reference to ''Literature/AngelNotes'', one of Nasu's early works, which is set AfterTheEnd of the NasuVerse. It refers there to the evolved human beings that live on AfterTheEnd. (The rest of the GratuitousEnglish is just referring to Zelretch's dimensional cheating.)
*** It doesn't stop there. The entire premise of the [[spoiler:alternate universe is based around ''Literature/AngelNotes''. The world has started to die and the mana has begun to deplete. An unknown particle has begun to surface in its place, poisoning the current lifeforms. The Ainsworth Holy Grail War was started in order to make a wish to save humanity by allowing them to survive the world's death.]]
** Later chapters have shown characters from Fate/Zero and HA popping up left and right. Caren Ortensia is the nurse at Illya's school. And in a blink and you'll miss it shout out to her character, when Illya is injured in one chapter, her maids barge into the nurse's office, dragging Shiro along with them. In the very next panel, Shiro is wrapped in a cloth and dangling from the ceiling while Caren scolds the group, wondering "why just me." This is especially funny when you realize that this is the Cloth of Magdala, her primary weapon in HA, which has the power to forcefully bind men.
** Zelretch is serving as the master of Rin and Luvia, while [[Literature/FateZero Waver Velvet]] is acting as his assistant.
** The music that plays when [[spoiler:Illya installs the Archer Card? [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Emiya]].]]
** [[spoiler:Kuro's treatment of Illya is extremely similar to Archer's treatment of Shirou in the original Fate/Stay Night. Bonus points for the fact that Kuro is essentially the Archer Card given form.]]
*** It goes even further. [[spoiler:Archer was future Shirou who overcame his supposed limitations, was given form by the Holy Grail, and required prana to sustain himself; he counted on being erased out of existence by killing his past self. Kuro is Illya who overcame the supposed limitations of cards (she has the Archer Card permanently active) and only came to exist when Illya's wishes backfired because of her limits, given physical body by Illya (whose latent magical power comes from the fact that she is the Holy Grail's vessel), and whose existence requires prana not to disappear into nothing; she is also incapable of killing Illya without supposedly dying herself.]]
*** The short version: [[spoiler: Archer is Shirou's disgruntled Future self of who he becomes, Kuro is Illya's disgruntled Past self of who she could have been.]]
** Miyu's [[spoiler:Saber Install chant]] is the same one that is used for the [[spoiler:Servant Summoning Ritual of the Holy Grail War]].
** Caren's attitude in this series is a MythologyGag related to her father's identity, and his most important mental problem [[spoiler:said father being Kotomine Kirei, and his problem being the fact that the only way he could feel happiness was through Schadenfreude)]].
** Illya's [[spoiler:Zwei form increases her power by using her nerves, along with other organs, into pseudo magic circuits. [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Before he discovered his actual circuits, Shirou had been using his nerves as pseudo circuits to power his Reinforcement.]]]]
** [[spoiler: In 3rei, at one point Illya equips the Lancer Card--granting her Cu Chulainn's ability--and fights it out with Kuro--who's still wielding Kanshou & Bakuya reminiscent of the first fight that Shirou saw.]]
** Kotomine Kirei [[spoiler:runs a ramen shop in Miyu's home reality. Anything he makes ends up being evilly spicy mapo tofu. And like the timeline that sprung off from Fate/Zero, he seems to know a LOT about the situation than he initially lets on, judging by his conversations with Gil]].
** Darius rants about [[VideoGame/MeltyBlood stage plays.]]
* NewTransferStudent:
** Miyu transfers into Illya's school ''immediately'' after her mysterious appearance at the beginning of the first series.
** Kuro von Einzbern / Dark Illya also does the exact same thing after her initial defeat.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Luvia has one.
* {{Nosebleed}}: Magical Ruby uses this to collect blood from Illya to form their contract in the first chapter of the manga.
* NotCompletelyUseless: Gae Bolg, especially when compared to its [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight original appearance]]. It goes from [[TheWorfBarrage literally always getting countered by something]] [[TookALevelInBadass to ]] [[OneHitKill actually showing off its true power]].
** [[spoiler: On its first and second appearances, it's used to kill off Rider and Caster, 2 of the remaining 5 cards.]]
* NotSoDifferent: Kuro tries to convince Miyu of this, regarding both their origins and their place in a "normal life."
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Irisviel very clearly knows more about her daughter's situation than Illya herself does, yet when asked about it will only smile innocently and pretend she doesn't understand the question. [[RefugeInAudacity Even when she was giving lengthy discussions on the subject not five seconds earlier]].
* OhCrap: In 2wei, the magical girls give a collective one when [[spoiler:Gilgamesh brings out Ea. In fact, this is pretty much the default reaction to Gilgamesh doing ''anything''.]]
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: During the epilogue of the first season, Luvia makes off with Rin's cards. The epilogue chapter ends with a SequelHook--[[spoiler: Rin caught up to Luvia and beat the crap out of her, reclaiming all of the cards, but is forced to remain in Japan for fighting.]]
* OutsideContextVillain: [[spoiler: The Holy Grail Participants from Miyu's AlternateUniverse]].
* PaintingTheMedium: The second season begins with the girls wondering why their outfits have changed, and the only explanation given is something along the lines of 'because a new storyline started'.
* PantyShot: Loads in the second season, although it's not the focus of the manga.
* ParodySue: Miyu Edelfelt is one of these at first appearance. She is hilariously good at ''everything'' in school; confusing the teachers with her advanced mathematics, creating breathtaking masterpieces in art class, and cooking elaborate feasts in Home Ec using only a single frying pan. Getting a time of 6.9 seconds in 50 meter dash is also impressive for someone her age.
** In 3rei, it is revealed that she isn't as perfect as she appeared to be, [[spoiler:courtesy of psychological issues--whatever was done to her before her brother managed to send her to Illya's world made her into [[TheAce an ace]], but left her [[BrokenAce really broken and unable to dream]].]] Still doesn't explain her inhuman cooking skills, but that one might be running in the family.
* PowerCopying: The cards provide the user with a specific Noble Phantasm when included in the Kaleidosticks. [[spoiler:Installing them into oneself allows the user to gain a fraction of the Heroic Spirit's power and abilities by overwriting one's own existence at the cost of being unable to use the Kaleidostick's powers.]]
* PowersInTheFirstEpisode: Wether the first chapter or first episode, Illya gains MagicalGirl powers by forming a contract with Kaleido Ruby. This also tells the readers/viewers that this story is a lot different than the original VN.
* PowerupLetdown: The [[spoiler:Assassin Install]] is actually ''weaker'' than Illya's standard Prism form. This gets lampshaded by Kuro, and acknowledged by Illya, before switching back.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The anime adaptation avoids or outright cuts out any reference to Illya [[spoiler:a Grail conduit]] from the supporting characters like Sella, Liz, or even her mother Irisviel. In the latter's case, the conversation the two had in the anime was completely given a different context -- instead of Iri obliquely telling Illya not to be afraid of her powers, she gives her advice on trying to understand why Miyu acted the way that she did.
** The 2nd season is an aversion. Mysteries brought up by the first season and left a mystery are explained in episode 6. [[spoiler:What was the [[SupernaturalGoldEyes golden-eyed]] personality that engaged the Assassin and Saber cards]]? That was [[spoiler:Kuro, Illya's original personality who was sealed by Irisviel and released through the Archer card.]] How did Illya perform feats like [[spoiler:overpowering the Saber Card's Excalibur and detonating a massive amount of mana]]? It's because [[spoiler:Illya/Kuro is a conduit to the cancelled Grail and her bloodline carries a magical background from her mother's side, granting her the mana capacity to perform said-feats.]]
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship[=/=]SchoolgirlLesbians: As a MagicalGirl staple, this is obviously in effect:
** The most obvious pairing are Illya and Miyu, who are FireforgedFriends and share quite an amount of intimate moments.
** A more down-toned, sort-of BelligerentSexualTension relationship is fairly obvious between Luvia and Rin; the two can't stand each other very much but in truth they rely on each other ''much'' more than they'd like to admit. Though they obviously don't kiss.
** Season 2 adds Kuro, who is ''a lot'' more open about everything, making the relationship between Illya and Miyu a lot more complicated. The fact she randomly walks around kissing everyone she meets (which somehow are only girls) pretty much confirms this trope. After all, [[GirlOnGirlIsHot Girl On Girl is Cute]].
* RummageFail: In ''3rei'', Gilgamesh attempts to withdraw Vimana from the Gate of Babylon, but is unable to find it (his treasury having been split in two and divided between himself and Angelica). He casually tosses out a number of legendary treasures while rummaging around for something that might be useful in the situation.
* SceneryPorn: So, so, so much in the anime.
* SchmuckBait: While looking at job ads, Rin gets a little too blinded by one position's absurd pay rate to notice that the job requirements are so specific that really ''only she'' could possibly fill them. Congratulations, Rin-san... you are now Luvia's personal maid.
* SchrodingersCat: Illya's parents Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel von Einzbern are both alive in this continuity, while both have been long dead in the original ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' and only appeared in person in the [[Literature/FateZero prequel]].
** Miyu's [[spoiler:very existence is this, as everything points to her being Shirou's ''actual'' biological sister. This means that in every other continuity it's likely that she died during the same fire that engulfed the city at the end of Literature/FateZero]].
* [[spoiler:ScrewYourself: Being partially Archer, Kuro's feelings toward Shirou are technically this.]]
** And then recently, [[spoiler: Kuro and Illya are getting too chummy...]]
* SeriousBusiness: Illya vs. Kuro in an epic, life-or-death, magically powered... game of dodgeball.
** Sella gets ''really intense'' about weight loss.
** And now 2wei Chapter 12 brings us ''Epic Cake-baking''.
** Epic food judging too.
--->'''Shirou:''' ''(with an ultra serious look on his face)'' "'''I can't tell a lie about cooking!'''"
* SequelHook: The anime has one. [[spoiler:In Episode 10, Bazett walks through an airport after the credits end.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Yeah, it's safe to say that Ruby [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v02/c010.6/3.html just]] ''[[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v02/c010.6/4.html maybe]]'' ships [[NotBloodSiblings Shirou/Illya]].
* ShoutOut: To a lot of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' {{doujinshi}}. Such as "Sword Dancers" (aka "Archerko") and "Unlimited Maid Works".
** Take a look at the 'wild dogs' in [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v01/c002.1/6.html this image]]. One of them in [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} particular]]...
** At one point, Kaleido Ruby suggests they 'explore' an alternate dimension by 'reducing it to nothing with a [[Anime/LyricalNanoha 'Lyrical Grade']] magical blast'.
** The way that Illya solves the issue that same chapter is probably a Nanoha reference as well: [[spoiler:As she proceeds to kill all of True Assassin's incarnations at once, as mentioned above, with a Nanoha-style 'level everything at once' blast. Starlight Breaker on steroids.]]
** In Episode 10 of anime, Illya uses Nanoha's "Zenryoku Zenkai!"[[note]] Maximum Power!/Full Power! [[/note]] CatchPhrase when [[spoiler:firing a point-blank mana blast at the Berserker Class Card]].
*** In Chapter 9.5, Karen-sensei is showing putting sugar into green tea. Six of them. At least unlike Lindy, she didn't put milk in it...
** [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya/v01/c001/14.html The wands]] seem awfully familiar as well, especially when they're [[Manga/CardcaptorSakura trying to combine them with cards.]]
** The crossover with ''Nanoha'' features Ruby using a [[Anime/DragonballZ scouter]] to measure, basically, Illya's tendency to freak out over cute stuff.
*** Another chapter in a flashback shows Rin and Luvia at the end of the one of their spats...and Shirou laying in a crater in a very familiar pose one of the Z-fighters did after being blown up.
** Illya can probably sympathize with [[LightNovel/ToAruMajutsuNoIndex Touma]] after [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v02/c011/11.html this]] scene.
** [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} "Teach us,]] [[http://mangafox.me/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v01/c010/14.html Mama Iris!" corner]]
* SinkOrSwimMentor: So Miyu has a mental block against flight that she really needs to get over. What's the most sensible way to go about it? Well, if you're Luvia, the obvious answer is 'throw her out of a moving helicopter'!
** What makes it worse is that ''it fails''.
* SkinshipGrope: Pops up a few times, including one awkward example wherein Illya gets felt up in the bath by her ''mother''.
* TheSpock: Miyu's weakness, a lack of imagination in a world where this powers up your magic.
* SpoilerOpening: The anime opening [[spoiler:shows the cards being used in battle]].
* StayInTheKitchen: Inverted with Sella in the first episode. She actually wants Shirou to leave the housework to her so that he can be a better big-brother example to Illya. You could say that she wants him out of the kitchen.
* StealthHiBye: [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v01/c006/6.html A favorite of]] [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/fate_kaleid_liner_prisma_illya_2wei/v01/c007/4.html August, Luvia's loyal butler]].
* StormingTheCastle: The plot of 3rei. [[spoiler: Challenging the Masters of Miyu's AlternateDimension to save her. She's held in an actual castle there.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: The series itself acknowledges this regarding Miyu for Illya.
** Illya's classmates note with dismay that Illya is the ''only'' person Miyu is 'dere' for. "You unlocked the Miyu route!"
* {{Synchronization}}: Rin has a curse that will [[ChainedHeat kill one target of the magecraft if the other target dies]]. She eventually uses this to make Kuro / "Dark Illya" stop trying to kill Illya, And later on Bazett to force the battle mage into a draw.
* TakeAThirdOption: When Illya is forced to choose between [[spoiler:Miyu or the world, she chooses neither. Instead, she seeks to find a solution where [[MythologyGag everybody can be happy.]]]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Rin and Luvia ''despise'' each other, but they are thoroughly competent when they actually manage to put aside their differences and work together. Granted, it takes a threat of the highest caliber to actually make them do so, and they go right back to shouting matches and brawling the second it's dealt with...
** Rather, they continue to bitch at each other [[CasualDangerDialogue while dealing]] [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome with it]].
* ThirdPersonPerson: Tanaka is Tanaka!
* {{Tsundere}}: Alternate universe or not, Rin is still Rin. And to make things worse, Illya is almost completely incapable of bringing out her deredere side.
** And Sella, although she seems to reserve her 'dere' for Illya exclusively. Poor Shirou in particular gets an almost unending stream of hostility.
* {{Transformation Is a Free Action}}: Averted by Illya in the second episode. Her transformation seems to work in real-time as seen from [[spoiler:Rin's]] perspective, including the music and light show.
--> [[spoiler:'''Illya:''' "I'm back."]]
--> [[spoiler:'''Rin:''' "Why did you bother hiding yourself?"]]
--> [[spoiler:'''Illya:''' "Because it's embarrassing."]]
** Also averted when [[spoiler:Illya installs the Archer Card. The only reason Illya completes the transformation is because Saber is interested in what Illya was doing.]]
** Averted again in Episode 9. [[spoiler:Berserker tries to attack Miyu while she's priming her Saber install.]]
** Averted in Episode 1 of the second season. Rin and Luvia can be heard struggling while Illya and Miyu complete their transformations.
* {{Transformation Sequence}}: Averted in the manga, where the magical girl transformations are more or less instantaneous. Hilariously played straight in the anime. [[LampshadeHanging Illya even acknowledges how embarrassing it is]].
* TruceZone: The gang encounters Bazett during the BeachEpisode, who is working off the damage she did during their fight as an iced treat vendor.
* UndeadTaxExemption: Luvia cooks one of these up for Kuro when her presence is revealed to the rest of Illya's school. Interestingly enough, Luvia comments that they had done the same thing for Miyu...
* UndyingLoyalty: Miyu is loyal to Illya period.
* UnprovokedPervertPayback: [[spoiler: Illya forcibly rips Shota!Gilgamesh out of the dark mass with her hand in a [[GroinAttack very awkward place]]. She immediately opens fire, which Gil lampshades noting that he should be the one screaming.]]
* UnwantedHarem: [[spoiler:It's looking like Shirou's putting one together, and he ''isn't even the main character''. Illya, Kuro, Rin, Luvia, and maybe Miyu... that's five, four of them added in the space of ''one chapter''. Dude doesn't even have to try anymore, does he?]]
** [[spoiler:And then the ''very next chapter'' is a flashback explaining how Rin and Luvia fell for him... while also adding Sakura to the harem! He really ''doesn't'' have to try anymore!]]
** [[spoiler:It's Nasuverse, a male lead will always have a harem.]]
** [[spoiler:The beach episode ends with this: First, Nanami calls out Rin and Luvia for getting between her sister and Shirou (NoodleIncident, bag of frogs); then, in order, Luvia, Rin, and ''[[HoYay Issei]]'' lay claim to Shirou. The four of them corner Illya to make her decide which one gets Shirou. She then runs away, thinking about how SHE wants Shirou. Finally, Ruby comes by with a "LovePotion", gives it to Shirou, and it turns out to be a TruthSerum. Cue Shirou passing out and, in his sleep, clearly defining the Unwanted part, stating what he dislikes about each of the first four suitors. Let's go over this: Illya, Kuro, Nanami's elder sister, Rin, Luvia, and Issei. As well as possibly Sakura and Miyu. Poor guy really can't catch a break.]]
* VisualPun: When Mimi watches Illya kiss Kuro in Chapter 17 of 2wei, the scene switches to a bouquet of lilies (i.e. [[GirlsLove yuri]]) that their other classmates were discussing.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: The 'Archer' Class Card, when equipped to one of the Kaleidosticks, gives the wielder a bow... or rather, it gives them ''only'' a bow, without providing any, y'know, ''arrows''. Illya is not amused to discover this. [[spoiler:Eventually subverted when she uses it by directly integrating it into her own body instead of into Ruby. [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower The result gives her complete access to Archer's projection magic, a ''much'' more worthwhile ability.]]]]
* YaoiFangirl: Illya's friend Suzuka and her sister. They eventually got Mimi addicted to it.
* YuriFan: Mimi believes girls should love girls.
