''Blood Lad'' is a {{seinen}} manga by Yuuki Kodama, which ran in ''Young Ace'' from 2009 to 2016 and was compiled into 17 volumes. The manga tends to subvert or parody some action/battle manga tropes.

Staz Charlie Blood, {{Otaku}} vampire and ruler of a district in East Demon World, falls in love (and bloodlust) at first sight with Fuyumi Yanagi, a [[SailorFuku Japanese schoolgirl]] who accidentally enters Hell. Unfortunately for the smitten Staz, she is killed while he is fighting an intruder on his territory. Her ghost remains in Hell and Staz embarks on a quest to resurrect her by implanting her spirit and bones in new flesh.

An anime adaptation debuted in the summer of 2013. Creator/YenPress licensed the manga in English, while Creator/VizMedia has the anime licensed in North America.

!Provides examples of:
* AloofBigBrother: Braz. A {{bishonen}} whose motivations are unclear. [[spoiler:Does he want to kill Staz for his great power, or did he seal him to save him from power overload?]]
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Neyn is this to Bell and Knell. Particularly when she offers to let Staz suck her blood while generously showing her cleavage.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Braz. He's a ManipulativeBastard whose intentions have not been revealed. Does he have good intentions? [[KnightTemplar Think that he has good intentions?]] Is he just plain evil?
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Richarz Blood, the previous King of the Demon World and Braz, Staz and Liz's father, is brought back from the dead by Braz, only to be killed again by Papladon Akim]].
* BerserkButton:
** Calling a certain leader of North Demon World a pig:
---> I'M NOT A PIG!!! I'M A BOAR!!
** Do ''not'' mock the [[Manga/DragonBall Kame]][[AwesomeButImpractical hameha]] or Staz will take you down.
* BestHerToBedHer: Bell wants to find the guy who stole her magic… so she can make him her "lover boy". Later, after Staz [[spoiler: unlocks his power]], she realizes that she finds Staz incredibly attractive because of his strength.
%%** Also Staz and Knell.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: The manga ends with Papladon and Herrshaft Grimm being defeated and with Braz's help, Fuyumi is finally revived and is able to return to the human world, but without any memories of her time with Staz or any of her adventure with her new friends on the Demon World. Thankfully, during the final scenes, it is shown that this time Staz has come to the human world and become a student in Fuyumi's class. Staz then introduces himself to Fuyumi again and it is hinted that even if she truly lost her memories of him, they can at least [[RelationshipResetButton re-start their relationship from scratch]]. Hopefully, without any supernatural interferences this time.]]
* BlandNameProduct: Hell has a clothing brand called [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniqlo Oniqlo]].
* BloodKnight: Wolf. He just wants a WorthyOpponent, you guys!
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: The morality of Makai is very different from anything the reader might encounter in modern society. Abusive parents and siblings are the norm. Positions of authority are often decided by duels to the death, sometimes with entire armies fighting each other. (Fuyumi was killed as collateral damage in such an incident.) It is considered perfectly acceptable to hire professional ''killers'' to discipline your children or their LoveInterest, not to mention use them in training your disciple(s). Still, AxCrazy OmnicidalManiac wackos are universally frowned upon, and either hunted down and killed or imprisoned for exceptionally long prison sentences. As an example, "Evil Jack" had a prison sentence of 20,000 years.
* BoundAndGagged: How Fuyumi is delivered to Staz when he orders his men to bring her to him.
* CharmPerson: Staz can control the minds of mortals with his saliva. Originally, it was used to subdue those he bit but he figured it had other uses and collects it in a spray bottle to instantly mind-control without biting.
* ChildrenDoTheHousework: Fuyumi Yanagi did the chores, mainly cooking, for herself and her father at home. [[MissingMom Her mother was never around]] [[spoiler:because of a freaky incident where she fused with a doppelgänger]].
* ClothingDamage: During her fight with Staz, [[spoiler: Bell]] just barely squeezes out of his giant hand but gets the bottom half of her outfit pulled off.
* CockFight: Staz and Wolf fight, with the winner getting Fuyumi.
* CoolGate: Bell can create Black Curtains between any two places, not just between Earth and Hell. [[spoiler: Papladon Akimu can also create these with his magic rings.]] Later it is revealed that [[spoiler: Bell's brother Knell and father Heads Hydra]] can also do this.
* CuteGhostGirl: After Fuyumi [[DeadToBeginWith abruptly dies in the beginning]], she comes back as a ghost.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Liz is one of the cutest anime characters to have ever been created.
* DaywalkingVampire: Staz can walk in broad daylight (albeit not comfortably), eat garlic, and is unafraid of crosses.
* DeathByOriginStory: Fuyumi gets eaten by a plant monster at the beginning of the story, reincarnating as a ghost who was eventually given new flesh but also a constant helping of Staz's blood to keep herself tangible.
* DimensionalTraveler: Bell. [[spoiler: A family trait she and Knell inherited.]]
* {{Doppelganger}}: A altered take on the myth in what happens when they meet with one of them being from the human world and the other from the demon world. [[spoiler:Instead of one of them dying the two [[FusionDance fuse together as one being]] when they meet one another.]]
* {{Doppelmerger}}: Fuyumi's mother encounters Bell's demon mother, Neyn, who turns out to be her doppelganger from the demon realm. This meeting results in the two women unexpectedly merging together. Fuyumi's father Yagani decides to let Heads, the husband of Neyn's demon half, take her away from him for the sake of his daughter's safety and future since she wouldn't be able to have a normal life with a HumanDemonHybrid mother and a half-sister with teleportation magic.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Staz and Braz
* EmergencyTransformation: Staz has to give Fuyumi some of his blood when she starts disappearing in the mortal world. This doesn't turn her into a vampire, but does give her the strength to stay tangible and "access to the first level of [his] vampire powers".
%%* EveryoneIsRelated
* {{Fanservice}}: Fuyumi's and Bell's huge boobies and their frequent outfit changes, and lots of {{Shirtless Scene}}s from Staz.
* FingerSuckHealing: Inverted: When Fuyumi sucks Staz's finger, it's ''she'' who heals.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler:Fuyumi and Bell actually met when they were kids at the time their moms fused into one. Flashbacks show they even played together for a while.]]
* FrankensteinsMonster: Papladon Akim, both figuratively and literally.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Staz thinks the "bloodsucking wannabe noblemen" vampire image is dumb, and doesn't see why he should go terrorizing humans when they make awesome things like anime and video games.
* FusionDance: What happens if you meet your mortal/infernal doppelganger, [[spoiler:which is how Fuyumi and Bell wound up as half-sisters]].
%%** VaderBreath
* BoyMeetsGhoul: The story begins with the vampire Staz meeting and falling at first sight for the human girl Fuyumi. Then, she dies and becomes a ghost after a ManEatingPlant attacks when Staz leaves her alone for a few minutes. Staz then is deadseat on bringing Fuyumi back to life.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Wolf is [[TooManyHalves half werewolf]], surprise surprise. [[spoiler:Knell Hydra is [[ChangelingTale literally]] [[SwitchedAtBirth one]]]]
%%* HellGate
* IJustWantToBeYou: ShapeShifting Yoshida gets to impersonate his idol Staz while Staz is out of town, so that a territory war doesn't ensue. Yoshida is a little too happy about this, though it's PlayedForLaughs.
* InformedAttribute: Apparently all Demons believe that ItsAllAboutMe, yet most of the demons throughout the story have engaged in altruistic acts.
* IntriguedByHumanity: Staz is very fascinated with human pop-culture, especially Japanese pop-culture.
* IOwnThisTown: Staz and Wolf are Lords of the East and West districts of hell respectively. They collect rent from their tenants and must fight challengers to their power.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Fuyumi and Bell inherited their huge breasts from [[spoiler: their mother Neyn]].
* JerkAss: The residents of the Demon World are pretty unpleasant people. The only characters that can be remotely construed as 'nice' are [[CuteGhostGirl Fuyumi]], [[{{Moe}} Liz]] and [[{{Bishonen}} Knell]], but even they have their moments of being just as bad as the rest of the cast.
%%* JustBetweenYouAndMe:
%%-->'''Bell (to Fuyumi)''': "Just between us girls."
* KillTheCutie: Fuyumi, at the very beginning of the story. She gets better, though as a CuteGhostGirl.
* KlingonPromotion: Whomever kills the ruler of a district becomes the new one. [[spoiler: The same also applies to the throne of Hell]].
* KnightTemplarParent:
** [[spoiler: Neyn]] will protect her daughter, even if it means her daughter has to remain as a ghost and Staz has to die.
** Also, Fuyumi's dad. [[spoiler: He lets his wife get remarried (sorta) to a punk demon lord, just to protect Fuyumi from her own sister]]. Heads said that Fuyumi's dad was the one person who absolutely terrified him, because no demon would do something like that even for their own child.
* LeftHanging: The anime ends on a cliffhanger leaving several loose ends. An OVA was released, but it does little to resolve anything. And there is currently no word of a second season in development.
%%* TheLegionsOfHell
* LargeHam: Due to the nature of the series, most characters will engage in this at least a bit. The most noteworthy ones are Staz, Bell, Papladon Akimu, Sabao and of course Siam Kid, the leader of "Team Fearless." Special mention goes to Chief of Police Goyle of Demon World Acropolis. While normally calm, stoic and respectful, when he gets angry the Ham is so strong that his anger actually manifests as the dragon-shaped "Angry".
%%* LongRangeFighter: Staz.
* LoveTriangle:
** Both Staz and Wolf like Fuyumi.
** Another with Staz, Fuyumi and Bell a type 5 with Fuyumi being C, Staz B, and Bell A.
** [[spoiler:Neyn, Heads (Bell and Knell's Dad) and Fuyumi's Dad after the fusion. ]]
%%* MadScientist: Two! Braz and the lazily-named Franken Stein.
%%* ManipulativeBastard: Braz.
%%* ManEatingPlant: Fuyumi gets eaten by one.
* MeaningfulName: The ''Blood'' siblings are vampires. ''Bell'' Hydra gives her namesake to Fuyumi as a way of summoning her for help.
* MonsterLord: Staz, Wolf, heck, it's easier to list the named characters that ''aren't'' Demon royalty of some sort.
* MsFanservice
** Fuyumi, of the {{Reluctant|FanserviceGirl}} type. She quite literally changes from one sexy outfit to another, as well as getting naked. She usually ends up sucking on something, be it Staz's fingers, baby bottles when sick, etc.
** Bell is the {{Shameless|FanserviceGirl}} type.
* NeverTheSelvesShallMeet: If they want to remain [[FusionDance separate people]], that is.
%%* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: Come on, it's a battle manga.
* NextTierPowerUp: [[spoiler:When Braz removes the bullet he has implanted in Staz's heart to seal his powers.]]
* {{Nosebleed}}: Wolf gets this after seeing [[MsFanservice Fuyumi]] dressed in a PlayboyBunny style costume.
-->"Is he getting excited over the girl?!"
-->"You can't find that sort of cheesy reaction even in {{Shounen}} manga these days."
* NotWhatItLooksLike: In chapter 49, Fuyumi gets a powerful blood-craving and desperately begs for Staz's blood, but the way she asks, and Staz's response, especially the desire to do the ritual in his bedroom than the bathroom ''sounds'' suggestive. Too late Fuyumi notices Bell looking on through either a window or a portal.
* OccidentalOtaku: Staz loves Japanese pop culture, but it's slow to filter down to Hell, and he's never been to Japan.
** In attempt to impress Fuyumi, he dons his hilarious idea of what an average Japanese person wears. The first thing he does when he meets Fuyumi is ask her about manga and games.
** As a prime example of how outdated his collection is, he's completely shocked to discover that there's more than one ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' game.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Because some of them are vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, etc. apparently.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Vampires' powers vary wildly. Staz, for example, can crush a person's heart by clenching his fist, and suck out their demonic energy - "miasma" - to heal himself ''after'' he has bitten them, through implanting one of his teeth in the bite. He doesn't have to drink blood and can withstand sunlight and garlic. He can also use MindControl on people who have touched by his saliva.
* PapaWolf: Heads Hydra when it comes to his kids [[spoiler:and Fuyumi]]. Also, [[spoiler: Fuyumi]]'s dad, who is the only one that had ever scared Heads. It proves that you don't have to be a man of action to be a papa wolf.
%%* PipePain: Wolf's weapon of choice.
* PlayboyBunny: Fuyumi wears a SchoolSwimsuit with [[AnimalEaredHeadband fake bunny ears]] and a tail during the wrestling match, as she is appointed the "Ring Girl".
* PlotTriggeringDeath: Fuyumi's sudden death by a ManEatingPlant sets Staz out on a quest to resurrect her.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Had Richarz Blood and Wolf Daddy told Braz about [[spoiler: the Door]], Braz would have never tried to avenge his father's "murder". Had Braz explained to his siblings why he needed Staz's fully awaken energy, Staz might not have run away and Liz would not have felt so lonely. In fact, the entire plot revolves around this trope.
* PowerLimiter: [[spoiler: The bullet that Braz shot Staz in the heart with]]
* PuniPlush: Only the girls' designs, interestingly -- the guys are drawn a lot more sharp-edged.
%%* PsychoactivePowers: Division Chief Goyle.
* RomanticVampireBoy: Staz, albeit one lacking the usual "[[VampiresAreRich rich]] vampire [[VampiresAreSexGods sex god]]" perks.
* SailorFuku: Fuyumi enters the Demon World wearing her school uniform.
* SecretDiary: When Bell loses the bottom half of her clothes during a fight with Staz. She's more concerned that he'll find out what she wrote in it, while drunk.
* {{Seinen}}: Is serialized in Young Ace, a Seinen magazine.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: The Blood family seems to have a thing about their first names ending in the letter 'z'.
* ShoutOut: Done here and there. At one point Staz dives out of a floating continent in an ''Manga/AstroBoy'' pose and then fights like Akira from ''VideoGame/VirtuaFighter'' [[YearsTooEarly while quoting him.]]
%%* SiblingRivalry: Staz has one with his siblings Liz and Braz.
%%* [[ShapeShifting Shapeshifter]]: Yoshida.
* ShirtlessScene: Pretty much the entire [[spoiler:boxing match between Staz and Wolf, as well as in Bell's room.]]
* SilverBullet: The {{Vampire Hunter}}s of Team Fearless use silver weapons, including bullets, when they fight Staz because vampires are weak to silver.
* TheSocialDarwinist: The Demon World is based upon this mindset. The stronger a demon is, the higher they get in the hierarchy (they become a territory Boss by winning every fight against other demons in said territory, a noble demon by beating every Boss, and the King by beating every noble demon). However, this mindset has now turned against the Demon World, as Akim is an anomaly (created in a lab), so the demons doesn't consider him their rightful King, but since he is stronger than any natural demon, they can't beat and overthrow him. They now have to rely on cunning and ingenuity, like humans.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: The Plant Seller who challenges Staz (boss of the Eastern District of Demon World) with a pack of carnivorous plants. While the seller and most of his pack of plants are quickly dealt with by Staz, one of the plants sneaks up to Staz' room and eats Fuyumi, setting up the rest of the story.
* SpeciesSurname: The ''Wolf'' and ''Hydra'' clans are werewolves and have a multi-headed dragon as a patriarch respectively.
%%* SpellBook: The Book of Resurrection.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: It's not uncommon to see members of the Blood family have their name rendered as "Vlad" in English, despite official material saying otherwise due to both being spelled exactly the same in katakana. The age-old L/R confusion rears its ugly head in regards to Blood T. Liz/Riz, with the most common evidence to the latter is the jumpers worn by prisoners in her private jail having "B-T-R Prison" printed on the back.
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: Averted when Staz is kicked before he can finish charging his [[Franchise/DragonBall Kamehameha.]]
* TechnicallyLivingVampire: Vampires live in the Demon World as a species of demon and reproduce naturally, as seen with Staz and his siblings having a vampire father.
* ThemeNaming: Bodyguards for the King of Hell are given code-names or actual names based on colors. [[spoiler: This is the first clue that Akim is being taken over by Grimm.]]
* ThirdEye: Satie and Mamejiro are two demons with three eyes which gives them the ability to see into a person's soul. They own a bar called The Third Eye.
* TrappedInAnotherWorld: Fuyumi is stuck in hell after she dies and becomes a ghost, which leaves her unable to return to the human world without disappearing.
* {{Tsuchinoko}}: One of Staz's favorite food. Fuyumi also admits it's quite tasty.
%%* UnderBoobs: Bell shows these when fighting.
* UnskilledButStrong: Oddly enough, this is Staz and Wolf's biggest weakness, and by extension that of most other demons as well. Because of the demons' immense physical and magical strength, even a brawler like Wolf turns out to have next to no hand-to-hand combat skill due to never really needing to learn how to fight. This lack of combat skill comes back to bite them in the ass when Kelly and Burgundy, two of Papladon Akimu's creations, show up and are revealed to be far too strong for even Staz and Wolf to defeat. Only Knell's grid room and White Step's intervention saves the day, after which Staz and Wolf become White Step's students.
* VegetarianVampire: Staz doesn't like to drink blood, though the only reason he gives is "BECAUSE I'M ME!!!". Fuyumi is the first person he wants to drink the blood of, so perhaps he only wants to drink the blood of those he is attracted to. He also wants to rebel from the traditional vampirism of his family, because he hates them, so perhaps that is why.
* VomitDiscretionShot: Episode 3, courtesy of Fuyumi after she meets Wolf for the first time.
* WeakButSkilled: White Step, a human who has lived in the Demon World for decades. Though he is weaker than even the weakest of demons, he more than compensates for it with his overwhelming martial arts skills. He is even capable of outfighting Kelly and Burgundy, the immensely strong creations of Papladon Akimu.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the anime, there's a subplot about one of Staz's models getting broken by his minions while he's away. It's treated as big deal when its brought up, but nothing ever comes of it.
* WorldInTheSky: The Hydra family resides in a PocketDimension consisting of floating islands. Fuyumi directly compares it to [[Anime/CastleInTheSky Laputa]].
