It's a Creator/KaoriYuki manga. This is all you need to know.

A tale of a boy named Setsuna Mudo, a TroubledButCute high school student who also happens to be the reincarnated fallen angel Alexiel. Now he's gotten himself in the middle of a war between heaven and hell; only this time, it's the soldiers of ''heaven'' who are evil unholy bastards.

But this of course, is only the BackStory. The real plot is that Setsuna [[BrotherSisterIncest wants to get in his (biological) sister's pants]]-for the anime, in any case. Things go on much longer in the manga, and ultimately [[MindScrew become quite complicated and aggressively bizarre]]. Mutated fetuses try to destroy the universe towards the end.

Has a series of drama [[CompactDisc CDs]], which is based on several manga arcs.

!!Tropes used in ''Angel Sanctuary'':

* AgentPeacock: Rosiel.
* AIIsACrapshoot: [[spoiler:God itself is a computer. It doesn't seem to have a PersonalityChip, but it's pretty [[GodIsEvil evil]] nonetheless.]]
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: [[LoveHurts Or ends badly]].
* AllStarCast: The drama CD cast is somewhat stellar. First off, Creator/TakehitoKoyasu as Kira.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Played straight at first, then subverted: The first time Setsuna reaches Sara, she refuses to go with him, since it would trigger widespread consequences.
* AmbiguousGender: Belial made a decision when they were an angel to be genderless. Since it was decreed by God that angels ''must'' have a sex, the result didn't quite work out as intended.
* AnyoneCanDie
* ApocalypseMaiden: ''Many''. Alexiel, Rosiel, Lucifer and [[spoiler: Sandalphon]] [[PersonOfMassDestruction all have the power]] [[BecauseDestinySaysSo and the destiny]] to destroy the world (or at least mess it up). [[DysfunctionJunction Incidentally, they're also damaged enough to contemplate doing it willingly]]. [[spoiler: Kinda makes you wonder why God would create so many superpowered emotional time-bombs. [[GodIsEvil Oh wait...]]]]
* ArchangelGabriel: The Archangel of Water, known also by the Islamic name Jibril. She herself never appears in the story, save for a few, brief instances, as a soulless figure in the Water Garden but [[spoiler: Sara is apparently her reincarnation, though she doesn't appear to have any of Gabriel's memories. Sevothtarte forced her to reincarnate into Sara to "kill two birds with one stone" - create a watcher angel for Alexiel's then-reincarnation, Setsuna, and get rid of Gabriel, who openly opposed his policies as the Prime Minister. Sara uses her body after Metatron removes the needle, but returns to her original body after Raphael revives it. Gabriel's body is then placed back in the Water Garden. It can be assumed that, after Sara dies in her normal life, she will return to Gabriel's body, this time with all of her memories.]]
* ArchangelLucifer: Not really Archangel of anything or the other, but when he was born with his twin brother Michael, everyone assumed that he would be the child of Light and Michael the child of Darkness, as an Angel of the High Council prophesied. However, after meeting with God and learning that his only purpose was to be evil, he... did just that. He has four black wings, and is the only character in the series with that particular number.[[spoiler: Kira is, in fact, his reincarnation. His soul was sealed inside Nanantsusaya, and Rosiel brings him back. He ends up killing Kato, under Rosiel's control. He then helps Setsuna and Adam Kadamon to kill God. After that, he leaves to go do his own thing.]]
* ArchangelMichael: The Archangel of Fire. He's one of the shortest characters in the whole story. He helps out Setsuna here and there. [[spoiler: He also seals up Adam Kadamon to cut off Gods source of power in the end.]]
* ArchangelRaphael: The Archangel of Wind. He's a sleaze. [[spoiler: He falls in love with Sara, but soon realizes he really loves Barbiel, and nearly dies reviving her from Sandalphon's attack. He is now stuck in a deep, 10 year long sleep. He also, along with Uriel, reveals Sevothatarte as Lailah.]]
* ArchangelUriel: The Archangel of Earth. A fairly important character. [[spoiler: He first appears in Hades, wearing a magic-mask to remove his emotions. Setsuna heads down to see him after hearing that he took Sara's soul. However, Setsuna is too late, as Zaphikel had already taken it up to Heaven. Uriel reveals that he is the one who cast the curse of eternal reincarnation into tragic lives on Alexiel, and asks to be punished, but Setsuna spares him. He then brings back Kato, and appears later on to have Raphael fix Setsuna's body. He and Raphael also reveal Sevothtarte as being Lailah. He then seals up Adam Kadamon with Michael and Kurai (with her elemental dragons of Water and Wind) and later returns to Hades and sets out to get his companion, Doll, back into her original body, which ran out of energy during the time he was absent. He also created a body for Kato after he lost his original one.]]
* AttemptedRape: Astaroth threatens to rape Kurai, but he gets stopped by Astarte taking over his body. Early on in the manga, Sara has a flashback of Setsuna protecting her from this as a child.
* AxCrazy: Rosiel, oh Rosiel...
* BecomingTheMask
* TheBeautifulElite: And how!
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Deconstructed. ''Viciously''.
* BigBad: Rosiel. [[TheHeavy He sets off the entire plot]], remains Setsuna's deadliest enemy, and [[spoiler: ''very nearly'' [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt causes the apocalypse single-handedly]]]].
* [[spoiler: BiggerBad]]: [[spoiler: ...which was all according to God's plan. Turns out, He'd deemed the universe a massive [[YouHaveFailedMe failure]].]]
* BigBadWannabe: Sevothtarte. [[spoiler: Does her best, but loses HARD.]]
* BigGood: Alexiel, whose ([[{{Reincarnation}} kinda]]) ThanatosGambit saved the world more than once. Adam Kadamon, meanwhile, takes the role of the Bigger Good.
* {{Bishoujo|Series}}: Not as many as bishounen, but there are several. Most notably Alexiel and Jibril.
* {{Bishonen}}: Too many to count.
* BlackAndGreyMorality: Sets up and subverts GodIsEvil and SatanIsGood; nobody is really that wonderful but almost everyone has an understandable, if {{Wangst}}y, reason for what they do.
** [[spoiler: ''Except'' God himself. Every single conflict in the series arises because God is a complete and total bastard.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: Another recurring theme. Most characters with unusual power or beauty end up paying pretty damn hard for it, directly or indirectly. [[CrapsackWorld And some of them don't even deserve it]].
* BodyHorror: Plenty of examples, mostly provided by Rosiel.
* BrotherSisterIncest: It is even relevant to the plot. Unlike many similar situations, Setsuna and Sara [[spoiler:go all the way and even gain a kind of happiness, albeit a very short lived one, as a couple. They are finally together again at the end of the manga. Additionally, all of the angels are ''related'', so their couples, including Alexiel/Lucifer and Zaphikel/Anael, would count as this.]]
* TheChessmaster Rosiel and [[spoiler:Adam Kadamon]].
* CrapsackWorld: ''[[WorldOfPun Holy literal shit.]]'' Let's face it, pretty much every character in this series could use a hug.
* CouncilOfAngels: And boy, are they bastards.
* DarkIsNotEvil
* DeathBySex
* DefrostingIceQueen: Alexiel's process of re-humanization. Lucifer's too, to an extent.
* DemonicPossession
* DeusExMachina: The final episode of the OVA.
* TheDreaded: Rosiel.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Rosiel, Arachne, Astaroth... Kaori Yuki seems to love this trope.
** To give a specific instance, when some mooks wanted to kidnap him in the middle of the night, Rosiel was able to convince them that he was woman ''just by talking in falsetto''. The mook's reasoning is paraphrased as thus: she was way too pretty to be a man and so hence, is not Rosiel.
** This could apply for Adam Kadamon, but then, he/she/it doesn't really have a gender.
* [[spoiler:EarnYourHappyEnding]]: [[spoiler:Despite a setup which borders on a CosmicHorrorStory (coming inches away from a DownerEnding), most of the cast lives to see the world saved.]]
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:Kato is really fond of this trope. He has THREE, the last one being permanent.]]
* EmpathicWeapon: An interesting double case. Alexiel's sword, Nanatsusaya, houses a spirit which serves and follows her because she knows his real identity ([[spoiler:Lucifer]]). On one of their adventures, said spirit's human form finds a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]] with spiritual powers and sentience, which asks him to follow him around. So, the mystic sword's personified spirit can now summon a mystic sword of his own. Is that a good weapon or what?
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Alexiel and [[spoiler:Belial]].
* EvilVersusEvil: [[AxCrazy Rosiel]] vs. [[ANaziByAnyOtherName Sevothtarte]] vs. [[ChaoticNeutral The Satans]] vs. [[spoiler: {{God|IsEvil}}]]. And they STILL find the time to oppose Setsuna.
* EyeScream: Later on in the manga, Rosiel [[spoiler:puts something in Setsuna's eye that let's him take control of Setsuna's body.]] Setsuna reacts by [[spoiler:stabbing out his own eye and acting like it was no big deal.]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: No, not being caught in an endless cycle of reincarnation into cruel lives and brutal deaths each time. [[spoiler:Being imprisoned by God and slowly fed to your children (which makes it no surprise that angels are as messed up as they are) is probably a lot less fun, isn't it Adam?]]
** Rosiel didn't have it easy either. Seems that God enjoyed torturing his closest family the most.
** This is also what wing cutting is said to be.
* FetusTerrible: Sandalphon
* [[spoiler:FromNobodyToNightmare]]: [[spoiler:Lailah. ''Holy Kadamon''.]]
* [[spoiler:GodIsEvil]]
* HalfIdenticalTwins: Boyz and Noyz
* HealingFactor: Kira, although his recovery rate gets increasingly slower as the series progresses. Also Alexiel and Rosiel.
* HealingHands: Raphael
* HeroicSacrifice: More than enough, but most notably [[spoiler:Kato's and Zaphikel's sacrifices for the main cast]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Raphael and Michael, Setsuna and Kira.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: [[spoiler:Lucifer]]
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Particularly in the manga.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Setsuna and Sara's mother is a rather nasty woman who [[AbusiveParents isn't going to be winning any parenting awards anytime soon.]] However, considering her children ''do'' harbor incestuous feelings for each other, her desire to keep them separated is somewhat understandable, even if she goes about it in an extremely dickish way.
* KavorkaMan: Raphael. He's not unattractive, but he's a transparent sleaze.
* LadyOfWar: Alexiel
* LightIsNotGood: Nope. Not at all. Conversely, DarkIsNotEvil. Hell, one of the most sympathetic groups in the manga are a race of underdog demons called the 'Evils'.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: If you use all your fingers and toes you may count the REALLY important ones.
* LotusEaterMachine: Setsuna gets trapped in one very early in the manga. In this dream, Sara is not his sister, but his girlfriend, he is a normal teenager, and the guys who died in the first volumes are alive and well.
* MindScrew
* [[spoiler: TheMole]]: [[spoiler: Arachne turns out to be one for Belial and the demons, though her heart wasn't really in it.]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse: [[spoiler:Lailah]] [[UriahGambit set up]] her rival to be killed ''by their loved one''. Which he regrets all of his life.
* MySiblingWillLiveThroughMe
* NotBloodSiblings: Subverted even before the series got going. One of the first scenes in the OVA is Setsuna resigning himself to the fact that he and Sara are related.
* NoWomansLand: Heaven is this. While most men there do not have it easy, women have it worse.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The Archangels, Alexiel, Rosiel, Lucifer...
* PietaPlagiarism
* PlayingAgainstType: A drama CD example - Creator/ShowHayami voicing the heroic and somewhat emo Uriel.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Obviously.
* RespawnPoint / BodySurf: Lucifer, willingly ''and'' unwillingly.
* ScrewDestiny: [[spoiler:Fate itself ends up being destroyed by Lucifer.]]
* SharingABody: Alexiel/Setsuna, Lucifer/Kira, Jibril/Sara - though this also ties in with {{Reincarnation}}.
** [[spoiler:Alexiel and Setsuna ''may'' have been split in the end. Notably, Alexiel's spirit is seen with Lucifer after Setsuna loses his divine powers.]]
* SissyVillain: Rosiel. Kinda. It's hard to call foul when most of the male cast looks and dresses only ''slightly'' less effeminately than he does.
* ShoutOut: Tokyo is destroyed on July X, 1999.
** Setsuna speaks of the ''Film/LadyHawke'' movie, unknowingly speaking about [[spoiler:Alexiel and Lucifer]].
* SmokingIsCool: Most notably Kira and Kato.
* StarCrossedLovers
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Kira. But Alexiel ''and'' Lucifer are extreme examples too.
* TragicMonster: Where do we even begin?
* {{Transsexual}}: Arachne. In her case, she doesn't have reassignment surgery because it'd mean she would lose some of her strength.
* {{Tsundere}}: Kurai and Anael.
* WasItAllALie
* WingedHumanoid: Almost everyone, which is not surprising. Some characters have unusual numbers. Adam Kadamon has 6 wings, Rosiel and Alexiel have 3, and Lucifer has 4. This is supposed to be a sign of their power.
** In angelology, some of the higher castes of angels are supposed to have more wings than the lower castes. The idea is overall sound, but it isn't actually accurate. Assuming you believe the really straight angelology stance on this, Lucifer should have 6 wings because he was a Seraphim.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Setsuna and [[spoiler:Rosiel]].
* {{Yandere}}: Rosiel. Uriel used to be one.
