Since the NGE manga did indeed come first (or depending on how you see it, at the same time). It's just way slower to be published. The example's last line is still quite redundant since you can't base an anime on a manga that didn't come first, but I first saw that later and I'm too lazy to fix it.

...because the former really comes off as someone who disagrees with that position shoehorning a TakeThat into the paragraph. It also assumes that the opinion's shared by Stephen King without actually quoting him (I'm not at all confident he'd really agree), and it's most certainly not an opinion that "most creators laugh at". It's a standard rule of literary analysis to focus only on the work itself, and taking every single thing a writer wrote but didn't publish as "canon" is just insane: in many cases, there's a reason why the writer didn't try to publish it.
