Tooru Nakagami, being the heir of the Mizuchis, is about to become a [[WeirdnessMagnet major target]] for demons, ghosts, specters, and other otherworldly things. So, when Tooru and his brother Noboru visit their grandmother way out in the country, Tooru finds himself with a bodyguard in the form of Kuugen Tenkou, a fox spirit entrusted to the family. A sentinel from the shrine, Kou, comes along with them back to their city, where trouble follows them. ''Wagaya no Oinarisama'' has a focus on the supernatural, but the likable cast interacting in (or trying to get used to) today's world is a great source of fun as well.
Based on a series of LightNovels.

This series contains examples of:
* ChickMagnet - Noboru is quite a hit with the ladies, despite him being mostly clueless.
* DancingTheme - "Shiawase no Kotodama", the second end, featuring the entire cast in a cute, SuperDeformed style.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors - The relationship between the elements is a deciding factor in Kuu and Kou's battles, but a bit of magical AppliedPhlebotinum, the Sakasaen, can reverse the way the relationships work.
* FishOutOfWater - Kuu and Kou are largely unfamiliar with the modern world, but as time goes on they catch onto it and combine modern tech with magic to help them solve what comes up.
* ForHalloweenIAmGoingAsMyself - In a town populated with spirits, it makes sense.
* {{Gainaxing}} - Berika, subverted in that they're not actually her breasts.
* GenderBender - Both Kuugen and Gyoukuyou can switch between male and female forms at will.
* GirlInABox - Byakki/Shiro-chan. (May also double as SealedEvilInACan)
* HandPuppet - Mubyou.
* HotSpringsEpisode - Two, the second with VeryFalseAdvertising.
* IKnowYourTrueName
* ImagineSpot - Misaki Sakura, Noboru's secret admirer, frequently launches into fantasy sequences either mistaking Kuu and Kou for his girlfriends, or about Noboru and herself.
* ImmortalImmaturity - Kuugen, while having many smart moments considering his/her age, also has a few...not so smart.
* {{Miko}} - Kou
* MundaneFantastic
* NeverTrustATrailer - The {{Post Episode Trailer}}s begin normally, but as the series goes on, they start to show things that never happen in the next episode.
* PerpetualPoverty - Taking on two more people, plus Kou's tendency to break things, makes the family budget run very tight.
* PettingZooPeople - Of all sorts.
* RoboticReveal - Mubyou, after being on the end of a reflected fire spell.
* SchoolFestival
* WolfMan - [[spoiler:Miyabe]]
