ARIA http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akira_aria.jpg
She's tall, pretty, aloof and composed. As a result, she generally attracts quite a following wherever she goes. She usually has waist-length, dark hair.

While it might not be fair to say that trouble follows her everywhere, it's accurate for most cases of the type. This sometimes causes an undeserved reputation as a delinquent.

Often the target of one or more SchoolgirlLesbians. If she is one herself, expect her to have a more-or-less Moe or ShrinkingViolet girlfriend.

The term was coined to describe Azuma Hazuki of YamiToBoushiToHonNoTabibito, playing on the old description of a man as "TallDarkAndHandsome". However, this is not a purely physical characterization; the aloofness is a key aspect of the trope.

This character type crosses over rather regularly with the Ojou and Kuudere. Feel free to compare the examples.

!!Examples:

* Azuma Hazuki in YamiToBoushiToHonNoTabibito, for whom the term was created, with Yuri Fans checking to see if anyone else fits the pattern.
* Tenjou Utena in RevolutionaryGirlUtena, one of the early incarnations of this character type -- except for her hair, which is pink in the anime and strawberry-blonde in the manga.
* Sakaki in AzumangaDaioh is a subversion - her apparent aloofness is really the because she's a ShrinkingViolet, in spite of her physical appearance.
* Himemiya Chikane in KannazukiNoMiko, complete with Moe ShrinkingViolet girlfriend.
* Mima in PerfectBlue despite having short dark hair.
* Shion, Mion, Rena, Miyo, and arguably Rina (although she is hated, and for good reason) in Higurashi.
* Majority of the female cast of CodeGeass in terms of appearance, but proper examples are C.C., Cornelia, Euphemia and Marianne.
* Nico Robin in One Piece.
* Erika in Daimos.
* Lucy in ElfenLied despite having red hair.
* Akira in ARIA (pictured).
* Melfina in OutlawStar.
* Momo in PeachGirl.
* Rukia , Nanao and Neliel in Bleach (despite Rukia being Short Dark and Bishoujo.)
** And Senna, from the Memories of Nobody movie.
* Shana and Mergery Daw in ShakuganNoShana (like Rukia, Shana is Short Dark and Bishoujo, while Mergery is Blond.)
* Kuga Natsuki in Mai-HiME.
* Zakuro in TokyoMewMew.
* Aoyama Motoko in LoveHina.
* Lieutenant Kanuka Clancy from Patlabor. Possibly a part of her rivalry with Bifauxnen Lt. Kumagami.
* Madoka Ayukawa in KimagureOrangeRoad. -- Since KOR was over 20 years ago, she is one of the originals
* Sai in KidouTenshiAngelicLayer.
* Tomoyo in Clannad, who immediately gained fangirls upon transferring and received gifts from them. Also, compare on how tall she is compared to the other girls by looking at how tall her life-size teddy bear outfit is.
* Shizuma from StrawberryPanic. She has white hair, but otherwise fits this trope just fine.
* Maki Izumi from MartianSuccessorNadesico is something of a subversion of this. Physically speaking, she's quite attractive; however she's always cracking bad puns, has a habit for playing the ukelele (terribly) and nobody seems sexually interested in her while she never shows any sexual interest in anyone else. [[spoiler:At least not until the episode where everyone's repressed personalities come to the forefront and her sexual side tries to convince both Akito and Akatsuki to have sex with her. Of course, this is also the episode where it's explained that she's repressed her sexual side because both of her fiancees died young and she's convinced if she opens up to anyone they'll inevitably die as well and she'll just be alone and heartbroken again.]]
* Jun Fudo in DevilmanLady.
* Rider in FateStayNight embraces this trope.
* Asagi from Yotsubato Yotsuba&!, only the waist-length hair is brown and she's more troublemaker than troubled.
* Setsuna Meioh (AKA Sailor Pluto) and Rei Hino (Sailor Mars) from SailorMoon. (At least Rei is Short, Dark and Bishoujo...)
** The manga version of Rei plays this trope terribly straight, looking much older than her actual age in the process.
* Kikyo and Kagura from Inuyasha.
* Reki from HaibaneRenmei.
* Akira from MahouSenseiNegima
*** Also from the same series, Mana Tatsumiya.
* Cynthia from Pokemon, despite being blond.
** Don't forget about Gym Leaders Sabrina and Clair, as well as Pike Queen Lucy.
* Kotonoha Katsura in SchoolDays.
* Ogasawara Sachiko in Maria-sama Ga Miteru.
* Ceres in AyashiNoCeres.
* Amatsuka Megumi in TenshiNaKonamaiki. (She has the wrong hair color, however.)
* Kazetsubaki Kuriko in Maburaho.
* Caren in MermaidMelodyPichiPichiPitch, and later, the other members of the secondary trio.
* Karen and Komachi in Yes! Precure 5. Karen best fits the personality part, though.
* Konoe Tsurugi in HanaukyoMaidTai.
* Simone from ShiroiHeyaNoFutari, the first shoujo GirlsLove manga ever from way back in the '70s. Yes, this trope has existed ever since the beginning of the genre.
* Kan'u Unchou in IkkiTousen. To be expected since she's supposed to be a voluptuous schoolgirl version of the resident GeniusBruiser and GentleGiant of RomanceOfTheThreeKingdoms, Guan Yu.
** Also, Kaku Bunwa (Jia Xu)
* Ran, titular character of KazemakaseTsukikageRan, is a textbook example of the trope, particularly in that she attracts trouble like a magnet (or is attracted to it?) and has a Moe ChineseGirl following her around most of the time. However, she dresses and acts in a masculine way, despite looking quite feminine; if she were ever taken for a boy (oddly, no one makes this mistake) she would be bounced right over into Bifauxnen territory.
** People are often in the dark about her gender until she starts talking, though.
* Hinamori Amu from ShugoChara wears a public persona that makes her appear as an example of this trope to her schoolmates -- in reality, she's plagued by self-image issues and hates acting that way.
* Kanae Kotonami from SkipBeat fits this trope--at least the physical description, anyway. Her true personality is a bit more Tsundere fiery.
* Isayama Yomi from Ga-Rei -Zero-. To certain extent, the main character Tsuchiyama Kagura also count.
** The chief of the Environment Ministry special division and her secretary, as well.
** And Natsuki Expy Kasuga from the Defense Ministry squad.
** Come to think of it, is there any woman not fitting this trope in Ga-Rei -Zero- ?
* Tatsuki from Hyakko, although it's her blond friend Torako who gets the fangirls.
* Anego from DaiMahouTouge is the full-blown delinquent variety, even though she is nothing compared to the protagonist.
* Ami Kawashima and Sumire Kanou from Toradora
* Takane from SoraWoKakeruShoujo.
* Suigintou from RozenMaiden... as far as miniature dolls go anyway.
** Despite having WHITE hair.
* This is a major plot point for Yukari Hayasaka from ParadiseKiss, as she uses her appearance to break into professional modeling.
* Akiha Tohno from Tsukihime.
* Mio from K-ON, complete with an all-girl fanclub, despite being painfully shy.
* Futaba from [=~Amanchu!~=] is rather withdrawn, but as things look now she may score cute Hikari as her girlfriend.
* Sae from HidamariSketch, despite having short hair and being a pettanko.
* Maya from [=~Maya's Funeral Procession~=], another GirlsLove manga from the '70s.
* In different Gundam series:
** Matilda Ajan in the original series
** Haman Karn in ZetaGundam and its sequel
** Aina Saharin in The08thMSTeam.
** Relena Peacecraft (despite being a blonde) and Lucrezia Noin in GundamWing.
** Marrue Ramius and Aisha in GundamSEED.
** Meer Campbell in GundamSeedDestiny.
** Marina Ismail and Sumeragi Lee Noriega in Gundam 00. [[spoiler: Tieria Erde, while dressed as a woman, looked and acted like one. Complete with fangirls.]]
* Sumika from SasamekiKoto.
* Mana Kuzunoha and the Natsume sisters, Maya and Aya in TenjouTenge.
* Nana Osaki from Nana though of the short hair variation
* Arashi Kishu from X and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle.
* Takako Chigusa from BattleRoyale

* Silhouette from Watchmen (she even has a cute nurse girlfriend) in spite of her bobbed hairstyle.
* To some extent, Hellboy Liz Sherman. She had long hair in the first film; it was cut into a bob by the second.
* TheBaroness from GIJoe.

* Violet Baudelaire from ASeriesOfUnfortunateEvents.
* Vidia from the DisneyFairies series.
* Bellatrix Lestrange from HarryPotter.
* Susan Pevensie from ChroniclesOfNarnia.

* Megurine Luka, one of the Vocaloids, was designed with this image in mind. ... Except her hair, which is pink like that of the previously mentioned Utena.

* Tsugumi Komachi in Ever17.
* Hatsune in AtlachNacha.
* Saki Tsuzura of ArcanaHeart. The fact that she Expy looks like Chikane may just be a coincidence, really.
* Shanoa from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, some of the women she rescues flirt with her, even.
* Also Tear Grants from TalesOfTheAbyss
* Uzuki from AkaiIto, something that may have contributed to her popularity.
* Kaya from AoiShiro as well as a milder version in Ayashiro.
* Natsuhi from UminekoNoNakuKoroNi. Would probably be an adult counterpart to TheOjou if she didn't have a tendency to get upset and yell at people so easily.
* Sena from ChaosHead.
* Mai in Kanon, with the "undeserved delinquent reputation" variant.
* Shion in OtomeWaBokuNiKoishiteru.
* Arguably, Yuugi Hoshiguma (despite her blond hair), Mima (green), Yuka Kazami (also green), and Eirin Yagokoro (white) would be the Touhou series' closest examples.
* Lulu from FinalFantasyX, although people generally leave her alone because of her sardonic nature. NPC Dona is pretty much the same, with an emphasis on "dark".

* Maaya Chiaki from RedString.
* Susan of ElGoonishShive eventually evolved into a flawless clone of Sakaki, and more or less fits this trope.

* Sapphire has Khina Sabiri (although her hair is in a ponytail, and is medium-length besides) and Morgana Rubanenko.
* Shandala, heroine of BrokenSaints, fits the physical type (until her haircut in Chapter 6), and trouble does tend to follow her around.

* Raven from TeenTitans despite having short hair. In two episodes she grew waist length hair.
* Ember from DannyPhantom, though she really IS a delinquent.

* AngelinaJolie.
* Even though it's not really clear if she was tall or not, Anne Boleyn was definitely dark and bishoujo.
* Tilda Swinton.
* YuuAsakawa. In fact, she voiced majority of the characters seen in the anime section!
* Monica Bellucci
* Catherine Zeta-Jones
* Lee Young Ae
* RomiPark
*Many a character of Suzie Plakson's (best known around here as Worf's eventually fridged LoveInterest in StarTrekTheNextGeneration.)
