A show that thematically centers on the tension between two opposing ideas will manifest that tension through three central characters: one character representing each opposing idea, and a character who must integrate and reconcile the opposition.

A common form has characters representing the Ego, Superego, and Id:

->"The id contains primitive desires (hunger, rage and sex), the super-ego contains internalized norms, morality and taboos, and the ego mediates between the two and may include or give rise to the sense of self and the well being of humans."

Sometimes the same dynamics play out with just two characters, but in those cases the representatives of opposing sides must learn to negotiate with each other. In a PowerTrio, they are free to be more extreme, and it falls to the leader to lay the smack down and keep the group integrated.

In short, OppositesAttract + 1. See also FiveManBand, TwoGuysAndAGirl, TerribleTrio, ThreeFacesOfEve, and ThreeAmigos. There is a closely related ensemble in EvilDuo. A ComicTrio uses the same ingredients, but the leader is crazy, the action one is stupid, and the thinking one is powerless. See also CastCalculus. Depending on the fandom and its tendency for shipping, a power trio may easily become an OT3.

AlienNine has the Alien Party:
* Kasumi Tomine: Joined because she likes catching/fighting aliens (Id). Also contrasts with Yuri in that she is a prodigy and a xenophile.
* Yuri Otani: Railroaded by her classmates since no one else wanted to be stuck wearing the UglyCute alien (Superego). The opposite of Kasumi in that she is a crybaby moeblob who despises all things alien.
* Kumi Kawamura: Choose to be an Alien Fighter rather than be saddled with the higher pressure and responsiblity of Class President (little did she know...) (Ego). Capable and dependable one who has no real issues with aliens--the middleman.

AxisPowersHetalia has the Axis Forces:
* Ludwig/Germany: Rational, workaholic, duty-bound (Superego)
* Feliciano/Italy: Child-like, naive, ditzy (Id)
* Kiku/Japan: in the middle (Ego)

Baccano! has a set in the Gandor brothers:
* Keith Gandor: Oldest brother. TheQuietOne and flat-out voiceless in the anime. Conservative thinking and adherent to ethics and tradition (Super-Ego).
* Berga Gandor: The middle brother. Huge, emotional, and intimidating. Not very bright (Id).
* Luck Gandor: The youngest. The calm, collected "brains" of the group. Usually at the head in most of their dealings and serves as the mediator (Ego).

BlackLagoon
* Dutch: Pragmatic, unemotive, deadpan (Superego).

Team GetterRobo? They're a bit of a special case, though, as their positions tend to shift depending on whether the current version owes more to the goofy 1970s anime or the dark and violent manga version.
* Ryoma - Ego or Id. If they're playing it LighterAndSofter he'll be a typical HotBlooded anime hero/team captain. If it's DarkerAndEdgier, he'll be Hot Blooded to the point of being psychotically violent.
* Hayato - Whether he's a cool-headed foil to Ryo's loud, flashy super robo antics or a cold an calculating sociopath, Hayato almost always fits into the Superego mold. His Getter-2's hit and run fighting style reflects this nicely.
* Musashi/Benkei - Whether he's the Id or Ego depends on the version. While he's generally a bumbling oaf who charges into battle without thinking, in darker Getter stories, while still more violent, he's usually less so than his teammates and has a great deal more empathy.

JusticeLeague (of America), and the recent (2008) comic series Trinity:
"The triumverate" of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman often match this (although the position each occupies can change depending on the situation and who's writing). Most of the time:
* Wonder Woman: Ego (Superman's ideals, but as a trained warrior, understanding Batman's points)

* Will: (Super Ego: Order) Traditional, straightforward and honest but stubborn and unyielding to a fault.
* Elizabeth: (Ego: Reason) Tries to use the method that best fits the situation and utilizes bluffs and honest diplomacy almost equally.
** While the following are hardly a power trio, The Curse of the Black Pearl sets up a nice id-ego-superego dynamic with, respectively, Jack, Will and Norrington: "[My place is] right here - between you and Jack." (Fun fact: Schopenhauer's analogue of the id was called the Will.)
** This troper thought Jack, Barbossa, and Norrington formed a trio as Id, Ego and Superego respectively.

* One is a fairly traditional PowerTrio:
** Roland: Instinct. (Id)

EndersGame and its sequels have a power trio of the three major sentient species:
* Buggers: Highly organized, virtually no concept of the individual, communicate psychically faster than the speed of light, very technologically advanced, put the survival of thier species first but don't seek to destroy other species. (Superego)
* Humans: Very high-tech, artistic, individualistic, but also prone to irrational decisions and chaos. Have a bad habit of nearly destroying other sentient species. Good overall, but can still be pretty dastardly. (Id)
* Pequeninos: Very low-tech compared to other species, tied to thier traditions, have a much greater concept of the individual than buggers but still less than humans, generally open-minded. Tribes fight with each other, but outside of these battles, they try to avoid conflict. (Ego)

Literature/FlowersForAlgernon

**Lampshaded in the sixth movie

* On a mission to a world that at first seems to have the hat of pilot-worship, four of the New Republic's best pilots try to sort things out. This is possibly the funniest book in all of Star Wars.
** Id: Wes Janson, dubbed "the Darling One" by Adumarians. Loves making jokes, snarky observations, believed to have very little maturity. (Really he is mature when it counts, but he mouths off a lot.)
** Superego: Derek 'Hobbie' Klivian, "the Dour One". He's the group's cynic, though far from TheEeyore.
** Ego: Both Tycho Celchu, "the Doleful One" and Wedge Antilles, "the Dilligent One". They're both more inclined to leadership and somewhat more serious. Somewhat. Tych is given to occasional, devastating one-liners, and while Wedge is usually there to be appalled at jokes, after he gets laid and later gets back into his starfighter he briefly surpasses Wes.
--->Wedge: "We have the right tools to subvert our Imperial admiral."
--->Hobbie: "What tools?"
--->Wedge: "Oh, Wes's maturity, your optimism, and my diplomatic skills."
--->Hobbie: "We're doomed."

StarWarsExpandedUniverse: HandOfThrawn Duology

*Frank: Superego, Jerkass sadly.

** Sherman T. Potter is also a possible candidate for the Superego.
** Another idea would be the Father Mulcahy.
** Even Radar O'Reilly might be an option, but then again, thats a bit far fetched.

MST3K actually has two:
* Joel or Mike and the robot pals:
** Crow T. Robot: Silly, child-like, often the butt of jokes and prone to spontaneously making costumes and believing himself to be characters from the movies they watch. (Id)

Shane, Dustin and Tori from PowerRangersNinjaStorm are more of a ThreeAmigos situation; there's little to no conflict between them, just the usual temporary disagreements you get among best friends. In the first episode, Dustin and Shane designate Tori as the "responsible" one, though.

PushingDaisies
* Emerson: Id. Says whatever's on his mind. Appears more concerned about money than morality; seems willing to flex morals when it benefits him. Likes eating and drinking.
* Chuck: Superego. By far the best-read of the trio. Concerned about what's right, fixing things, finding solutions. (Considerable overlap with ego -- she's very compassionate, a quality which the other two often lack, and is much better at relating to people than either abrasive Emerson or aloof Ned.)
* Ned: Ego. Mediates between the two. Takes input from both; but, since the power is his, the final decisions tend to be also. (Considerable overlap with superego -- he often overthinks things, and can be distant.)

RedDwarf:
* Rimmer: Ego
* Kryten: Superego

Lister, the one portrayed as the most 'normal', is a mix of all three. Holly is just bonkers.

* Superego: Data, usually. (Sometimes it was Laforge saying why something wouldn't work, but he usually TechnoBabbled himself into a solution involving the Deflector Dish or polarity reversal.)
* Ego: Picard.

Species in StarTrek:
* Humans: Well balanced, Diplomatic, Hatless, Special: Ego
* Vulcans and/or Borg: Logical, Orderly, Scientific: Superego

*Tom Corbett (ego): The rational and level-headed one, TheSmartGuy, TheHero, the StandardizedLeader

TopGear:
* James May: TheSmartGuy and often teasingly referred to as Captain Slow, because he does most things slowly and carefully, and often scolds the other hosts for being careless. Has a tendency towards GoshDangItToHeck and UnusualEuphemism. Also, he plays piano. Definitely the superego.
* Jeremy Clarkson: A loud, brash SmugSnake. He's rude, likes explosions and luxury cars, is exceedingly vocal in his dislikes, and let's not get into his politics. Almost certainly the id.
* Richard Hammond: A risk-taking adrenaline junkie prone to Cluster F Bombs... also most likely the id. But he's somewhat nicer than Clarkson and less pushy, and also seems to have a bit more of a rapport with the other two than they have with each other, so he may narrowly qualify as the ego.

Torchwood:
* Gwen: TheEveryman, er, woman...not that anyone on this show cares. (Every few episodes, Tosh fills this role; this contributor can only remember one conversation between them, and that was mostly Subtext). (Ego)
* Jack: An immortal, level-headed SufficientlyAdvancedAlien. (Superego)
* Owen: When you're the resident LovableSexManiac, what does that make you? (Id.)[softreturn]There's a reason Ianto gets so little screentime...
* Alternatively, one can see Captain Jack as TheKirk/ego, the (usually) emotionally restrained, matter-of-fact Ianto as TheSpock/superego and the argumentative, passionate Owen as TheMcCoy/id.
** Children of Earth later seems to put Jack as the Id, Ianto as the Superego, and Gwen as the Ego.

TheTroop:
*Jake Collins: Gets thrust into the world of supernatural critter wrangling, and is an avid superhero buff. (Id)
*Felix Garcia: TheSmartGuy who is somewhat more level-headed, but still acts somewhat spaztastic as Jake does at times. (Superego)

* Knuckles: Strong sense of duty and commitment, but highly susceptible to manipulation and incredibly hard to gain trust from (Borderline Id/Superego, but leans more towards Superego).

* Team Dark:
** Shadow: Brooding and spiteful (Id).

* Marisa: (Id)
* Sakuya: (Superego)
Undefined Fantastic Object:
* Reimu: (Ego)

** Debatable. Especially for Sanae, where in one path she becomes "obsessed" with youkai hunting.

The Ultima series - Though the Avatar and Companions can be shuffled a number of ways, the trio that stands out are The Avatar, Iolo, and Shamino. The majority of the games begin with the three of them together, and in all games Iolo and Shamino receive more dialog and plot significance.
* Iolo - Bard and the model of Compassion. Tends to instinct and occasional crankiness, artistic temperament, and the only character with a lifelong love through the series. (Id)
* Shamino - Ranger and the model of Spirituality. Though he can be a man of action, tends toward meditation, communion with nature and the higher order of human consciousness. (Superego)
* Avatar - The Avatar is the role model of all the Virtues, and seeks to apply them in practical example for problem-solving. (Ego)

WorldOfWarcraft - The major racial leaders of the various factions.
* The Horde
** Thrall: Charismatic and far-sighted leader struggling mightily to redeem his race and do the right thing, in spite of impossible odds. Balances the necessities of the Horde with the demands of its people. (Ego)
** Sylvanas Windrunner: Coldly calculating Dark Lady of the Forsaken, breaking her quiet brooding only rarely in moments of extreme hatred and loss, over the terrible events that have created her newfound people. (Superego)
** Garrosh Hellscream: Brash, arrogant young orc with a sense of invincibility-both personal, and of the Horde. Extremely aggressive, often disregarding the counsel of Thrall and the other leaders to act with caution and reason. (Id)
* The Alliance
** Varian Wrynn: Hotheaded human king nursing a desire to annihilate the Horde in general and orcs in particular. Not prone to reason or negotiation, and quick to use violence. Id
** Prophet Velen: Quiet, methodical leader gifted with prescience and wisdom, carefully plotting the best course for his people and the rest of the world, no matter what happens. Superego
** Tyrande Whisperwind: Struggles to deal with internal problems before worrying about the Alliance, and attempting to guide the night elves through the new series of endless wars with diligence and respect for the old ways. Ego
* Northrend Forces
** Tirion Fordring (Argent Crusade): Trusts in the light and the forces of righteousness with unshakable faith, refusing to employ questionable means on account of the moral ambiguity. Perhaps the single greatest paladin alive. Id
** Darion Morgraine (Knights of the Ebon Blade): Ruthlessly pragmatic fallen hero, liberated from the Lich King's control but still employs all the dark and forbidden knowledge and techniques he learned as a death knight. Does not recognize or value such follies as honor, righteousness, or valor. Only results count. Superego
** Alexstrasza (Wyrmrest Accord): Operates by unknowable rules, wielding an OmniscientMoralityLicense, but also deeply compassionate, and willing to work even with races that have done horrific wrongs to dragonkind.

Warcraft 3 has a few as well
*Night Elf leaders, Reign of chaos
**Tyrande: strong sense of who should or shouldn't be allowed in the forest, more traditional. Superego
**Furion: More flexible, willing to work with outsiders, ego
**Illidan: Seems somewhat erratically driven by a desire for power and anger. Id

*Orc leaders, Reign of chaos
**Grom Hellscream: Aggressive, would rather fight than negotiate. Id
**Cairne: Calmer, more protective of others. superego
**thrall: Handles pressures from both directions. Ego

*Human leaders, Reign of chaos.
**Arthas: Impulsive, driven by a desire for revenge. Id
**Uther: Moralistic, follows laws and customs quite closely. Superego
**Jaina: Ends up in the middle, personality wise. Unlike most examples, she is in a lot of ways less powerful than the superego and id, but sh does make a major decision after seeing both of the other two make arguments and decisions. Ego

*Night elf leaders, Frozen throne
**Maiev: Becomes obsessed with tracking down Illidan. Id
**Tyrande: the one who most remembers previous alliances and morality (see missions 6-8). Superego
**furion: Seems to end up making most of the overall decisions. Also is again the most flexible. Ego

Starcraft: Not a typical "character" power trio as such, but the different races do have elements of the different characters described above.
*Protoss: Highly structured society, strong rules and customs. Tends to be the most righteous. Superego
*Zerg: Driven by instinct, with an overall goal of absorb other life-forms and evolving into biological perfection. Id
*Terrans: Have people who can go both directions. Most Terrans seem focused in achieving goals. Ego

ValkyrieProfile - The conflicting natures of the three valkyries is not the focus, but it is a central part of their development, especially in the second game. They are even described as separate components of one greater being.
* Hrist - Harsh, ditiful, gets the job done. (Superego. Labeled by Freya as the secondary ego.)
* Lenneth - Balanced (Ego. Labeled by Freya as the primary ego.)
* Silmeria - Emotional, rebelious (Id)

TheLegendOfZelda, even though one of the three is the villain. Probably played straight with the godesses, who represent each of them. It's even kind of Lampshaded because of the Triforce.
*Link: The hero, bearer of the Triforce of Courage, always does what seems to be the best, but tends to be fooled into making mistakes by Ganon. (Ego, favouring Superego. However, he sometimes acts like an Id himself)
*Zelda: Bearer of the Triforce of wisdom, smart and puts the need of others in front of her own. (Superego, but one of her alter egos, "Tetra," is a boarderline case to "Id")
*Ganondorf: Holds the Triforce of power. Wants world domination. (Id, period)

ShinMegamiTensei has a classic case of this in the beginning, though eventually things get worse and the player, as the Ego, is forced to either side with one of the remaining members of the trio against the other, or reject them both. Anyway, while the trio's still together, it goes...
* Law Hero (Superego)
* Neutral Hero (Ego)
* Chaos Hero (Id)

CallOfJuarez: Bound In Blood - The [=McCall=] Brothers
* Ray, wild and aggressive elder brother (Id)

* Shin / Sailor Truth: Id (stubborn, obnoxious, in-your-face PluckyGirl)
* Aki / Sailor Beauty: Ego (relatively normal -- emphasis on relatively)

ArthurKingOfTimeAndSpace, which also contains an explicit lampshading here
* Arthur - The laid-back leader who mediates between the other two (Ego)
* Lancelot - ultra-moral and perfectionistic (Superego)
* Guenevere - confident, determined, and potentially a source of friction (Id)
Interestingly, this is almost certainly a homage to StarTrek, at least in the space arc, where Guenevere is the ship's doctor and Arthur, as king, is effectively captain of the Excalibur.

FletcherApts
*Bob: StraightMan Hamster (Ego, tending toward Superego at times)
*Doug: HollywoodNerd Dog (Superego)
*Bill: BoisterousBruiser Goat (Id)

MSPaintAdventures Problem Sleuth:
*Problem Sleuth: Charismatic, Candy-Corn Revolver wielding Leader

Lagend
*Nikol Mimagi(Ego)
*Lewk (Id)

OrderOfTheStick has two:
*The half of it left in Azure City when the Order was split up:
** Celia: StupidGood ActualPacifist, out of place in an adventuring party (superego)

* Gabe: Emotional and dimwitted (Id)
* Jim: "Even-handed, and slow to anger" (Ego)

SomethingPositive
* Aubrey: Brash, impulsive, confrontational, slightly sociopathic (id).
* Davan: Somewhat of a JerkAss, but much more self-controlled than Aubrey (ego).
* Pee-Jee: Moral (relatively), often the voice of reason (superego).

* Ty Lee: the perky, giggly, girly one (Id)

Also the original [=GaAng before they picked up Toph=]:
* Sokka: Impulsive, headstrong, reckless and clumsy beyond belief. (Id)
* Katara: Caring, nurturing, and strict (in a motherly sort of way). (Superego)
* Aang: Wavers between both extremes at times but generally settles into the happy medium by episode's end. Fittingly enough since he's the personification of spiritual balance in the Avatarverse. (Ego)

Ben 10
* Ben Tennyson: Over-eager superhero. (Id)
* Gwen Tennyson: Brainy, understated, occasionally snarky. (Superego)
* Grandpa Max: Authority, knowledge, parental figure, former MIB-type. (Ego)

Ben 10 Alien Force
* Gwen: Smart, voice of reason, gets along with both well (Ego or Superego)
* Kevin Levin: Cocky, daring, an ex-villain (Id)
* Ben: As the leader, tries to do what the hero sees as right, though it may backfire. (Superego or Ego) He eventually finds out that one of his forms, Alien X, takes this concept a little too literally...

Biker Mice from Mars:
* Vinnie: Fun-loving party animal and wise-cracker, who acts first and apologises later. Always has a grin, even when in pain. Colour scheme: white. (Id)
* Modo: Preaches traditional moral values and quotes the wisdom of his grandmother. Gentle-hearted giant whose anger is usually brought on by reflecting on the actions of others. Chooses to wait and plan rather than rushing in. Colour scheme: grey. (Super ego)
* Throttle: Cool, wry, with a soft-spot and great understanding for his bros, but with a keen eye for the middle ground between them. Warm-hearted and fun-loving, but in moderation, and serious and commanding as the situation demands. He will generally hold the veto vote between the paths of action suggested by the two extremes. Colour scheme: yellow (Ego)

TheBoondocks:
* Huey: Moralizing leftist (Superego)
* Riley: Gangster thug wannabe (Id)
* Robert: Balance (Ego)
** Or Ceasar as the Ego, depending on the version you're looking at.

DannyPhantom
*Danny Fenton/Phantom: Leader, usually caught in middle (Ego)
*Sam Manson: Rational, levelheaded, cool and cynical (Superego)
*Tucker Foley: Fun-loving, comic relief, always tempted by his vice (Id)

DogtanianAndTheThreeMuskehounds:
* Porthos: leader and mediator (Ego)
* Athos: hotheaded man of action and appetite (Id)
* Aramis: refined aesthete (Superego)

EdEddNEddy:
* Ed: Big, dumb, brutish, and easily swayed (mainly Ego, but can be drawn in either direction depending on which other guy is persuading him)
* Edd: Neat freak, TheSmartGuy (Superego)
* Eddy: Schemer, ruled by his desires (Id)
Depending on the nature of the episode, they sometimes switch roles: Rules-obsessed Edd can become the limiting Superego, while CloudCuckoolander Ed can act as the impulsive Id. Ironically, when this happens, it puts no-self-control Eddy in the Ego position by default as he tries to reign in the extreme behavior of the other two and keep them focused on their goal (jawbreakers or money.)

Futurama:
* Bender: Boozing, smoking, Jerkass robot. (Id)
* Leela: Levelheaded, predictable Action Girl. (Superego)

* Kiva - Always trying to hold Coop back from his id-riffic rampages. Superego.
* Jamie - A fairly normal guy (if unambitious), although he isn't completely immune to flights of fancy. At the very least, he sometimes tries to talk Coop out of his more dangerous exploits, in favor of going to look for the Planet Of HotAmazon Women. Ego.

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
* Flapjack: Adventurous Keet keet. (Id)
* K'nuckles: Older anti-role model. (Ego tending towards Id)

* "Big Bad Harv": violent criminal made from years of repressed anger (id)

TimeSquad
* Buck Tuddrussel (id)
* Larry 3000 (superego)
* Otto (ego)

TransformersAnimated -- Blitzwing is the power trio.
* Icy (superego) - calm, collected, rational
* Hothead (id) - aggressive, uncontrolled, passionate

TransformersArmada had three sets:

** Interestingly, this trio adopts a colour scheme for each character: yellow for the neutral Marshall, cool grey for Dacowta, and warm cream for Cowlarado. This scheme is revisited in Biker Mice From Mars...

Greek and Roman Myth
* Zeus/Jupiter: Impulsive, greedy, prone to huge temper-tantrums, entirely motivated by his sex drive (Id).
* Poseidon/Neptune: Depending on the mood, could be reasonable or nuts. But in general less impulsive than Zeus and less rigid than Hades. (Ego)
* Hades/Pluto: Brooding, morbid, obsessed with rules and laws. (Superego)
** Debatable, depending on your source. In some myths Zeus, god of law over men and hospitality, is the mediator between other gods and the enforcer of laws, while Poseidon, as roiling and angry as the sea, causes trouble. It was Zeus, after all, who decreed that the gods should stop interfering in the Trojan War, and who swallowed the Goddess of Prudence.
