zomo: ...so many exceptions. Is this entry then pretty much a moot point?
{{osh}}: Not exceptions. This is entry is how there are few references completely ''out'' of context. An exception would be a show featuring Christ Chex or something.
{{YYZ}}: The point is that in anime, 1) Jesus himself is never mentioned ''except'' by people specifically defined as Christian, no matter how much Christian imagery pops up, and 2) even the Christians are surprisingly reluctant to speak the name of the Savior.

RobinGoodfellow:
->"Fujiwara Zakuro/Mew Zakuro from Tokyo Mew Mew is some sect of '''Protestant''' in the anime, apparently one that has little problem with Schoolgirl Lesbians. She wears a cross, prays and goes to church, but never during actual scheduled '''mass''' times."
Just for clarity, Protestants don't go to Mass; that's strictly Catholic.

{{Scientivore}}: ...and I'm ''yet again'' struggling to understand why an apparently universal trope has been singled out as an AnimeTrope. WTF? Please explain to me how the treatment of the Jesus Taboo in anime is different from its treatment in other media.
{{Lale}}: The Japanese have different standards, different traditions. This sounds more like UsefulNotesOnJapaneseCulture.
UnknownTroper: In anime, Christian symbolism is used out of context because it looks cool. Western works are more likely to not show Christianity at all (though it's practically a guarantee that somebody will be Jewish).

Anonymous: On that note, the NGE example reminded me of ''Kingdom Come'', a DCU story from a while back that featured, at the end, a giant cross-shaped [[spoiler:mushroom clou

VampireBuddha: Cut out some natter:
*** Then what was up with all that 'Lost Jerusalem' stuff?
** This Christian troper was five seconds away from being vaguely offended before he realised they just interpreted Jesus as a husky voiced badass who fired energy bolts from his hands. Then it officially became awesome.
** This troper thinks that Cloverway never had a production bible to begin with.
*** This troper agrees with the above. [[spoiler:Considering their first rename for the Messiah was "The Ambassador of Good..."]] SO MUCH PAIN. If you had any respect for the original at all, that moment was like a hot spike in the cerebrum. With a sledgehammer. Absolute, undiluted {{Narm}}, except it makes you cry for a different reason instead of laugh. A {{Macekre}} too, of course.
** Perhaps you haven't heard, TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse.
*** Well, it's not exactly ''the'' Grail, but close enough.
I also moved the ''FullMetalAlchemist'' example to straight examples, because they never actually mention Jesus.
