Many series will invariably have a mother (often a ChristmasCake) who is noticeably attractive. In appearance and disposition, she is more often than not either as [[{{Moe}} sweet-cute-and-huggable]] as her younger counterparts and/or hot enough to give MrsRobinson a run for her money. This may even be referenced in the show by another character commenting on her "down-to-earth charm" or "earthy good looks". If she's the only recurring female adult, she'll often be popular with the [[ParentalBonus older fandom.]] As a rule, HilarityEnsues as she will almost certainly be [[OlderThanTheyLook mistaken for her children's cute big-sister,]] much to their embarrasment.

Mothers are, of course, seen in other kinds of shows, but have a special significance in shounen, where they usually reflect the relative healthiness of the household [[EconomyCast without needing to show an extended family]]. If they're homemakers, they'll be (conveniently) always present at home, and often in the kitchen; if they work outside the house, their jobs will either be "feminine" (nurse, school teacher, waitress, secretary, etc.) or "intellectual" (lawyer, doctor, librarian, etc). They'll be more attractive to the soon-to-be-teenage audience since the Hot Mom is a realistic way to keep the cast [[{{bishoujo}} predominantly female]].

This rule tends to hold most strongly for the ''lead'' character, while a side character is more likely to have a bombastic [[EducationMama overbearing mother]]. Lead female characters, especially in UnwantedHarem series, can also have such mothers; if the lead lives with her, it's a general rule.

This trope has popped up more and more in American television, thanks largely to the UglyGuyHotWife craze started by EverybodyLovesRaymond. Where TV housewives were once barely more attractive than their husbands (if at all) most of the time, nowadays they're almost exclusively played by gorgeous, skinny women. So the common housewife with two or three kids tends to end up looking like a 30-something version of a Maxim covergirl.

Occasionally the character is an aunt or [[CoolBigSis big sister]], but this is rare. They can also get MistakenAge from people.

Sometimes abbreviated as a MILF, short for "Mother I'd Like (to) Fuck." A seemlier, but less popular, alternative is "momshell."

In the case where the HotMom is actively pursued by men half her age in-universe, she can become the series' StacysMom.

* To the amusement of Macross fans everywhere, Miria Jenius becomes this in ''{{Macross7}}'', the first direct sequel to the Macross television show (with daughter Mylene being a main character). Fittingly, fair bits of AuthorityEqualsAsskicking AND ActionMom were also added to the mix, making her in some eyes hotter than 95% of the fictional women on this list.
** There's also Ranka's mom Ranshe Mei and Alto's (dead) mother Miyo Saotome from ''MacrossFrontier'', who are arguably as hot as Mylene's.
* Julia Murai in ''GreatTeacherOnizuka''. Justified in that she gave birth to her son when she was 14, and she was only three or four years older than Onizuka himself. This becomes an important part of her son, Kunio's, characterisation, as one of his defining traits is his protectiveness of his mother from strangers who hit on her.
* Although she's not really his mother, Misato Katsuragi occupies that role for Shinji Ikari in ''NeonGenesisEvangelion'' -- and arguably, despite her good intentions, muffs it badly (the mother part, not the hotness part. She succeeds there in spades).
** Shinji's actual mother, Yui Ikari, ''was'' pretty good-looking - at least [[spoiler: before she went into her Giant Purple Monstrosity phase]]. In the official spin-offs where she is alive (such as Angelic Days and Ikari Shinji Raising Project), she looks exactly the same as when she was 22.
* HappyLesson pushes this tropes beyond logical extremes with FIVE mothers to one single male character, who are also his TEACHERS when he is at school.

The late Mrs. Tendo, similarly, was very much the image of Akane, judging by the latter's flashbacks and photographs.
* Fumio Usui in ''{{Karin}}'' was [[HelloNurse so hot]] she kept losing jobs due to employers, coworkers, and customers hitting on her.

The ensuing revelation (and the TastesLikeDiabetes nature of their relationship) causes Ryo Kuroyanagi to disqualify the man in disgust.
* Chi-Chi and, to a greater extent, Bulma, from ''DragonBall Z''. They both actually look their age, but still.
** Even more-so with Android 18, who still looks 18. Justified in that her body has been modified by Dr Gero so much that aging has effectively stopped.

* About all of the moms shown on ''Bakugan Battle Brawlers'', from that of the main character to minor characters, are pretty damn hot.
** Except for Runo's mom who's pretty damn ugly.
* Samataro's goddess mom in ''Kamisama Kazoku''. She also manages to be the MsFanservice and the InnocentFanserviceGirl of a series that has younger girls, as she delivers everything from MarshmallowHell to HadakaApron. And her deep affection for her son (which she announces is the same as a lover's devotion) adds to the OedipusRex plot of the series.
* The ''LoveHina'' manga introduces Mutsumi's mother, Natsumi. Who looks ([[GenerationXerox and acts]]) almost exactly like Mutsumi, just with slightly different hair.
** Although she isn't technically a mom (although she's old enough to be one), Keitaro's Aunt Haruka also counts.
*** And when you tell her that, be sure to be disguised as Keitaro at that time, so she will be merciful and kill you quickly.
* In ''{{CodeBreaker}}'', Sakura's mom is so {{Moe}} and small (and, arguably, childish) she looks like her ''younger'' sister. It doesn't help that she cosplays as a waitress, a bunny and the like.
