MisterSix: Shouldn't this be BlackMagicGirl? Black Magician Girl sounds like a girl magician who is black.
HarpieSiren: To quote the artical "Named both for the Final Fantasy class "black mage" and for the Dark Magician Girl from Yu-Gi-Oh!."
{{Tanto}}: This entry was born in YKTTW and we went through the thought process, but someone didn't launch it (sigh) and that discussion has been lost.
Later: Incidentally, I don't think the FinalFantasyVI girls count. Terra and Celes don't have the personality, and Relm's not a natural magic-user. "Girl who uses attack magic" is not the trope; it's just a part of the trope. Moving here...
-->* The [[TheSmurfettePrinciple three female characters]] in ''FinalFantasyVI'' ''all'' embody this trope, actually. Two of them, Terra and Celes, are magic-users ''before'' everybody else can be, the third, Relm, has the ability to bring her paintings to life. Relm is a GenkiGirl, and Terra and Celes were both {{Action Girl}}s for TheEmpire -- Terra, being half-Esper, was considered a special weapon, and Celes was one of their generals.
{{Scifantasy}}: Fair enough.

{{Citizen}}: I saw [[http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cit_suzumiya_black_magician_girl_nagato.jpg this picture]] and thought of this entry, but the description doesn't fit, so linked here.

{{Duckluck}}:I gotta say, even knoywing the reason behind it, it's still a stupid name. Not that I can think of anything better...
BigT: Well, maybe if you used the PC term "of African Descent" instead of black, you wouldn't have a problem with it. :P

* The Valkyrie class in FireEmblem is, basically, a mounted StaffChick who can relay on offensive magic *and* staves after promotion. Notable Valkyries are Mage General Cecilia from Fuuin no Tsurugi, the promoted Priscilla and Ursula the Blue Crow from Rekka no Ken.
** Subverted in FireEmblem 8. The Cleric Natasha and the Troubadour L'Arachel can promote into Valkyries, but Natasha can also becomer a Bishop and L'Arachel can promote into Mage Knight (who uses staves and fire/thunder magic, whereas Valkies use staves and offensive light magic). BadassBookworm Lute and the male [[SquishyWizard Pupil]] Ewan, if he becomes a Mage and not a Shaman, can also promote into Mage Knights.
{{Tanto}}: In addition to being egregiously rambly, this doesn't have anything to do with anything. BMG is a ''personality type''; that's just as important to the trope as the "girl who uses offensive magic" part. None of these characters fit that greater trope. At all.
Later: ''And'' they still don't.
Mouser: I've removed Priscilla again and inserted a new FireEmblem entry. Is this more accurate?
{{Yoshi348}}: Illyana definitely wasn't, unless something weird happens to her between 9 and 10. She's a ''doormat''. Her death speech is ''VisibleSilence''.
{{Mouser}}: When I put that there, I only listed Nino and Tiltyu as examples. Agreed on Illyana. (And [[ShrinkingViolet Tinny]], for that matter. Removing her.)

BobLaRice: The fact that you did not seize the opportunity to call this trope BlackMagicWoman gives me a little pang of regret.
*JustCallMeNed: No fucking kidding! What a waste.

Removed Cecelia from WildArms. Not only is her character upbeat and happy, she also uses both healing and offensive magic, so doesn't fit this trope in the least.
