Shrewd, snarky sixteen-year-old orphan and street urchin Pagan Kidrouk enters TheKnightsTemplar in twelfth-century Jerusalem, seeking work as a squire. He finds himself assigned to Lord Roland Roucy de Bram, an excessively stoic and chivalrous knight whom Pagan nicknames "Saint George". As the book progresses, Pagan discovers the human being behind Roland's apparently emotionless exterior. He and Roland become unlikely friends, and Pagan remains fiercely loyal to the knight throughout the series.

* {{Bookworm}}: Isidore, to the point of being a {{Loner}} and having NoSocialSkills
* CatchPhrase: "Christ in a cream cheese sauce."
* DeadpanSnarker
* LonersAreFreaks: Played straight at the beginning of PS - this is how those around him see him because of his [[spoiler: epileptic seizures, which he has been shamed into believing it's a "devil" possessing him.]] Later subverted.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Roland. He also falls into associated tropes, mostly WideEyedIdealist and NoSenseofHumor.
* PleaseSpareHimMyLiege: Pagan to Saladin.
* TheStoic: Subverted with Roland when he has a rather emotional CrisisofFaith a few times in the series. Strays into StoicWoobie territory after the first half of Pagan's Crusade.
* WhiteSheep: Roland turns out to be this to his DysfunctionalFamily, much to Pagan's bemusement.
