-> ''"In a fight, you have to be careful not to break the little bones in your hand on someone's face. That's why I like bathrooms -- lots of hard surfaces.''"
-->-- '''Michael Westen''', ''Series/BurnNotice''

When someone dies in the bathroom either while... occupied at the time of death, or if their death is directly brought about by use of the bathroom fixtures. The fictional bathroom can be a truly dangerous place. [[ToiletHorror It is fraught with assassins, demons, and killer mutant creatures, to name a few.]] This is very possibly why NobodyPoops. Death or injury in the bathroom is a one-way ticket to a [[UndignifiedDeath legacy of ignominy]], and the prevalence of scary water-closet events seems to speak of a [[PrimalFear deeper human fear]] of vulnerability in this most private of places. Not to mention that some tricky assassins may exploit the assumed privacy and safety of the bathroom by CampingACrapper.

In this sort of situation, the phrase "MakeItLookLikeAnAccident" can take on [[PottyFailure disturbing subtext]].

In real life, one possible heart attack symptom is for blood to gather in the veins of the lower intestine, making the person feel like they have to go #2. When you hear of people dying on the toilet, that's usually what happened.

This generally has nothing to do with AssKicksYou. See {{Swirlie}} for less injurious (hopefully) examples. See BathroomBrawl for fights that happen in bathrooms (although it is still possible for someone to get killed) and CampingACrapper for someone getting attacked or killed in a bathroom ''without'' direct usage of the fixtures. For deaths probably adjacent to these, see DeadlyBath.

* In an episode of ''{{Manga/Gintama}}'', the Yorozuya crew and the Shinsengumi are dealing with a supposed ghost (which turns out to just be an alien fly-woman, but they don't find that out until the end of the episode), and Kondo has an encounter with said "ghost" in the bathroom. When Hijikata slams his stall door open, Kondo is in there... head-first into the toilet bowl.
-->'''Gintoki:''' How did ''that'' happen
* Alluded to once in a while in ''Anime/HauntedJunction'', a manga about school spirits:
** A gang of school spirits knocks out and kidnaps schoolers [[spoiler: to send them to their original building, an old school from Aomori that's about to be closed down.]] In the manga, one of these attacks happens in the bathrooms and it shows a girl being severely wounded.
** A whole episode is about a female spirit named Blue Spot Girl (Aoi Hanten), who haunts an all-boys school's bathrooms and beats up the male students if they don't give her the answers she wants to their questions. She's the long lost little sister of ''another'' bathroom spirit, Akamanto Kamen (Red Mask), who steps up to the challenge with different results according to the continuity.
* The first episode of ''Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt'' has Panty getting sucked into a toilet by the MonsterOfTheWeek. Fortunately, she's [[{{Immortality}} an angel]] so we [[TakeOurWordForIt hear her]] duking it out with the monster inside the pipes before being spewed back out of the toilet [[CoveredInGunge Covered In Poo]].

You see the thug hiding by the toilet as Rorschach goes in and can see brief images of him while the door swings back and forth. ** In ''Literature/{{Phantoms}}'', Harold Ordnay and his wife try and escape the Ancient Enemy by hiding in the hotel bathroom. It gets them anyway (although Ordnary has enough time to scrawl a cryptic warning on the mirror). Other characters throughout the book are also found to be missing from locked bathrooms.
** In ''Literature/{{Darkfall}}'', a drug dealer tries to hide from the goblin-like demons sent after him by Baba Lavelle by seeking refuge in the master bathroom of his home. However, the goblins are very small and get in through an air conditioning vent, killing him.

* In one of the ''Literature/RogueWarrior'' novels, Marcinko takes a serious beating from a tango who ambushes him in a bathroom and starts smashing his head into the fixtures. * Creator/CormacMcCarthy's ''Literature/BloodMeridian'' ends with [[spoiler:Judge Holden murdering "The Kid" in an outhouse]]. [[AmbiguousEnding Probably]]. [[GainaxEnding Maybe]]... [[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* ''Series/BreakingBad'': After his close friend and associate [[spoiler:Gus Fring is discovered to have been a massive drug kingpin]], Peter Schuler barricades himself in a washroom as the police arrive to take him away for questioning. Knowing the evidence connecting him [[spoiler:to Fring]] is likely irrefutable and he will probably spend the rest of his life in jail, Schuler electrocutes himself with a defibrillator while sitting on the toilet. A bit of {{Bathos}} occurs when he slumps over, as the automatic flush activates as his body falls to the ground.
* The ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'' episode "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E1Lessons Lessons]]" has the spirits of a dead nerd, a female teenager and a janitor haunting inside a talisman in the bathroom.

* In ''Series/{{Frasier}}'', Roz tells the following story:
-->Lupe Velez, the movie star in the '30s. Well, her career hit the skids, so she decided she'd make one final stab at immortality. She figured if she couldn't be remembered for her movies, she'd be remembered for the way she died. And all Lupe wanted was to be remembered. So, she plans this lavish suicide - flowers, candles, silk sheets, white satin gown, full hair and makeup, the works. She takes the overdose of pills, lays on the bed, and imagines how beautiful she's going to look on the front page of tomorrow's newspaper. Unfortunately, the pills don't sit well with the enchilada combo plate she sadly chose as her last meal. She stumbles to the bathroom, trips and goes head-first into the toilet, and that's how they found her. ...Will you ever forget that story?[[note]]This is an urban legend. Velez killed herself with a large amount of secobarbital, which is lethal even with small doses. Also, it was not over her career, but other issues including being pregnant out of wedlock.[[/note]]

[[folder:Mythology & Folklore]]
* Many versions of the famous "Bloody Mary" {{urban legend}} claim that Mary appears in her victim's bathroom mirror before killing them. Some versions imply that she ''prefers'' hanging around bathrooms, while others maintain that she can be summoned in any dark room in which the victim is alone (the bathroom just happens to be a natural place to get some privacy). Considering the tale's origins as a {{ghost story}} circulated by children, this detail was probably chosen [[RuleOfScary to make Mary seem scarier]] since the bathroom is a place where [[ParanoiaFuel people generally expect to be left alone]].
* Japanese folklore includes several ghosts/{{yokai}} said to inhabit bathrooms. Both of these are featured in ''Anime/GhostStories'', though Hanako gets some AdaptationalHeroism.
** Hanako-san is the ghost of a young girl who died there (whether murder, suicide, or dying in a WWII bombing), who sometimes pulls victims through the toilet into hell.
** Aka Manto or Akagami-Aogami is a demon who will ask the victim to choose between red paper and blue paper. [[MortonsFork Either choice will result in them being killed]], red by cutting with blades, blue by strangling. And before you think of TakingAThirdOption, picking another color will usually end up with him dragging you to hell anyway (DependingOnTheWriter).

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* During the part of the play test for [[TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons D&D]] Next that was open to the public, there was a Tomb of Horrors inspired adventure called The Mines of Madness. [[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/AmongUs'':
** On the map Polus, one of the potential locations for the Fix Wires common task is located in a non-functioning toilet stall near Medbay. There's also a [[AirVentPassageway vent]] located directly under the task panel, [[InvokedTrope allowing]] Impostors to conveniently murder any hapless Crewmate who's unfortunate enough to have to fix the wiring in the toilets ''and'', in many cases, get away with it.
** One of the possible tasks on the Airship map requires a Crewmate to unclog a toilet. [[InvokedTrope Taking advantage of]] both this and the fact that the toilets are a relatively secluded part of the map, a viable strategy for the Impostor is to hide in a toilet stall and kill any Crewmates that pass by. The seclusion of the toilets on the map are also a double-edged sword in this case -- while Crewmates can hide there without getting caught for the entire round, GenreSavvy Impostors can also keep the dead bodies of the Crewmates they killed there without them being found.
* You can't kill ''anyone'' in ''VideoGame/{{Bully}}'', but a swirlie is still a knockout if you can drag your enemy to the toilets and flush 'em.
* [[https://www.alphabetagamer.com/death-flush-game-jam-build-download/ Death Flush]] is a horror-comedy game about a man and his girlfriend who are threatened by a Freddy Kreuger-esque figure known as the Toilet Seat Killer who kills people through possessed toilets.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Deception}} 4'', The Nightmare Princess, one of the newest traps is a rigged toilet. On the surface, it's just a normal unassuming toilet. But plant a poor victim's butt on it and it'll give her an ultra-high pressure bidet that'll rocket her into the air.
* One of the Cannith Challenges in ''VideoGame/DungeonsAndDragonsOnline'', is called Moving Targets, where you have to kill a bunch of mobsters in their mansion. In this one though, they randomly teleport around the place, sometimes going to the toilets. One optional objective in this challenge is to actually kill a boss while he is in the toilets, making it an EnforcedTrope.
* ''VideoGame/Dishonored2'': In one of the apartments infested with deadly bloodflies, you can find a deceased man sitting on a toilet.
* ''VideoGame/{{Fallout}}'' series:
** In ''VideoGame/Fallout2'' one sidequest involves a cave under a toilet in Modoc. It is blocked by rocks that can be cleared with explosives, but that causes methane to explode. If you aren't quick enough, you may get killed and get a NonStandardGameOver, something like "your stinking body flew far away, the locals were too disgusted to bury it". If your party is wounded by the explosion, they may attack you.
** ''VideoGame/Fallout3''. There are numerous traps in the game, but one the most sinister takes the form of a toilet rigged to electrocute whoever uses it, which in your case is drink from it. Some toilets also have mines placed in the bowls or tanks.
** In ''VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas'', one opportunity to assassinate Papa Khan is when he goes to use the outhouse. Bonus points if carried out with explosives.
* Nagao Kagetora of ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'' (more famously known as UsefulNotes/UesugiKenshin) died while on the commode in life before [[HistoricalGenderFlip she]] became a Servant. As a result, Nobunaga likes to make fun of her for it, and she's subjected to multiple gags based on toilets. In real life, Uesugi Kenshin did in fact die while using the bathroom, but it was sheer coincidence as that was when his body gave out due to esophageal cancer.
* ''VideoGame/GhostbustersTheVideoGame'' has a Cursed Artifact in the form of an absolutely ''disgraceful''-looking toilet. When you collect it, your HUD reads: "This toilet is making frightening noises...is someone drowning?" Turns out the thing has a bloodthirsty demon bound to it and was involved in an assassination many years ago.
* One of the stage interactions inside Arkham Asylum in ''VideoGame/Injustice2'' is a toilet inside a wrecked cell. * ''VideoGame/HalfLife2: Deathmatch''. You have a gravity gun that can launch heavy objects at lethal velocity. Most of the maps have toilets that can be picked up with this gravity gun. Needless to say, this is an iconic combat technique, so much so that not only is the kill icon for thrown objects a flying toilet, it's also in the title screen for the game. There's also an achievement in the standard game for killing an enemy with a toilet. It's aptly named "Flushed".
** ''VideoGame/BlackMesa'' features no less than two scientists who met their demise on the crapper. One is turned into a headcrab zombie not long after the resonance cascade, bursting out from the stall as soon as you approach it, while another is found shot through the stall door in the midst of the military's cleanup operation at the Biodome Complex.
** ''VideoGame/HalfLifeAlyx'' also includes an unfortunate soul who was zombified inside a bathroom, in the Northern Star hotel. You can even hear the toilet flush just before they come out to attack you.
* ''[[VideoGame/Hitman2016 Hitman]]'':
** On many maps there are opportunities to slip your target something that will cause them to rush for the bathroom to throw up into, giving you the chance to sneak in and shove their heads into the toilet bowl to drown them.
** In Marrakesh, one of your assassination targets is holed up in an abandoned school. On the floor of the second-floor bathroom of the school is a hole. It's got a toilet beside it. Guess what you can do if your target walks under the hole.
* In ''VideoGame/JetSetWilly 2'', the toilet at the start sucks you into an inescapable death trap.
* In ''VideoGame/LeisureSuitLarry1InTheLandOfTheLoungeLizards'', one of the [[NintendoHard many,]] ''[[NonStandardGameOver many]]'', '''''[[HaveANiceDeath many]]''''', [[TheManyDeathsOfYou ways]] [[EverythingTryingToKillYou to]] [[YetAnotherStupidDeath die]] involves ''flushing a backed-up toilet.'' [[GuideDangIt Of course, you're required to use the toilet for]] OneHundredPercentCompletion, [[GuideDangIt and one would instinctively flush it for more points.]]
* In ''VideoGame/MadWorld'', you can give your enemies lethal swirlies, though they're not so much swirlies as just dunking their heads into the toilet and waiting for them to explode into tiny chunks.
* The Hanako ghost also exists in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 1}}''. It consists of a mobile toilet from which a gruesome demon peeks out and lashes out at the party... and [[DemonicSpiders it knows]] [[OneHitKill Mudoon]].
* In ''VideoGame/SaintsRowTheThird'', this is one of the weapons for fighting with at Murderbrawl XXXI.
** ''VideoGame/SaintsRowIV''. The President of the United States can turn INTO a toilet and kill people. Reasons unclear[[note]]mayhaps due to it taking place in a computer simulation?[[/note]].
* In ''VideoGame/SpaceQuestIIVohaulsRevenge'', using the lighter in the restroom on Vohaul's asteroid base causes a methane explosion.
* In the opening of ''VideoGame/SplinterCellConviction'', [[PapaWolf Sam]] can [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique make a hitman very well-acquainted]] with several different toilets and sinks in a [[DisgustingPublicToilet filthy public restroom]].
* In ''VideoGame/SyphonFilter: The Omega Strain'', one of the {{Yakuza}} officers in Murakawa Tower can be taken out while relieving himself at a urinal.
* ''VideoGame/Uncharted3DrakesDeception'' features a GiantMook as a WarmupBoss at the beginning of the game. After the fight goes into the men's bathroom, Drake defeats the guy by smashing a toilet cistern into his face.
* In ''VideoGame/SleepingDogs2012'' Wei Shen can drown enemies in toilets and urinals when fighting in a bathroom.
* In ''VideoGame/Yakuza0'' during Chapter 1, Kiryu can slam unfortunate mooks heads into urinals with Heat Actions. He also has a fight against [[BossInMooksClothing Yoneda]] before slamming him into one, holds his head into the water then smashing his head through to break the urinal. That's not what kills him. Just to cap off the fight, Kiryu DROP KICKS HIM OUT THE WINDOW!

* Going into the bathroom in any of the ''VisualNovel/CorpseParty'' games is a bad idea. They have a high mortality rate.
** The [[FanSequel Fan Game]] ''VisualNovel/CorpsePartyCrossFear'' deliberately rachets up the paranoia by putting a set of bathrooms on every floor.
* ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'': When Sayaka Maizono's attack on Leon Kuwata failed, she attempted to hide in Makoto Naegi's shower. It failed and Leon stabbed her to death there.

* Reversed in ''Webcomic/KevinAndKell''. Kevin resorts to a loan shark who shows up via his toilet. The next strip shows little Coney in potty training on the same toilet, and the results: One dead loan shark, one full bunny. When asked about the effects of the shark would be on the young girl, she shows in a later panel what results: she visits the bathroom with a fishing rod.

* From ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'', when discussing how Timmy's "Super X" wishes tend to go south, Wanda brings up Super Toilet, which immediately causes Cosmo to freak out. This gets a BrickJoke a few seasons later, when Cosmo meets Super Toilet and then seem to make amends... then the toilet slams its lid, knocking him in and flushing him.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' episode "I Second That Emotion", Bender gets angry at Nibbler and flushes him down a toilet. This leads to Professor Farnsworth installing an empathy chip in Bender's head, which leads to Bender feeling sorry for Nibbler, taking himself apart and flushing ''himself'' down the toilet to look for him. Both are subversions, as they survive, but it leads to a meeting with the sewer mutants, and then Leela being left as a VirginSacrifice for a monster called El Chupanibre (ItMakesSenseInContext, honest) which is defeated by being flushed down a ''giant'' toilet.

* In an episode of ''WesternAnimation/RobotChicken'', Venus di Milo from ''[[Series/NinjaTurtlesTheNextMutation Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation]]'' is shown to have committed suicide by trying to flush herself down the toilet.
-->'''Cop 1:''' Ironically when she died, she [[NoDeadBodyPoops crapped herself]].
-->'''Cop 2:''' Is that ironic, or just funny?
* In the ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' episode "Reverse Cowgirl", Clyde's mother constantly harps on him for leaving the toilet seat up, insisting that she might fall in. [[ProperlyParanoid Not only does that happen, the flushing causes her insides to be pulled out, killing her.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Spliced}}'': In "Pink", a mole-ster pretending to be Entree's conscience (ItMakesSenseInContext) hits Entree over the head with a toilet hard enough to shatter the toilet.
* A close variation in ''WesternAnimation/StaticShock'' when Static deals with Hot Streak by pulling a sewer line out of the ground and inundating him in its contents.
