[[quoteright:342:[[Anime/DragonBallZ http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/SuperMode(DBZ-Vegeta).jpg]]]]

An "Overdrive Mode" where a character temporarily becomes much stronger, almost always accompanied by a [[PowerMakeover visible change]]. Basically, a DangerousForbiddenTechnique or DeadlyUpgrade without the dangerous/deadly parts -- it may be limited somehow, [[HourOfPower usually by time]] or a finite PowerSource, but sometimes it's not even that (if it [[CastFromLifespan shortens the user's lifespan]] or similar, it's a HeroicRROD). Very popular in action-based video games. May or may not have a [[InvincibilityPowerUp requirement to trigger]] (usually [[UnstoppableRage anger]]), but must [[RuleOfCool look awesome]] via [[PowerGlows glowing]] and [[PowerFloats floating]].

These transformations are usually accompanied by either a failure on the part of the other party to intercede, or a temporary [[BattleAura "aura of invincibility"]] that renders them incapable of doing so. [[TropeCodifier Popularized]] by the Super Saiyans of ''Anime/DragonBallZ''. Super Modes are particularly common in {{manga}} and {{anime}}.

The SuperTrope to InvincibilityPowerUp, LimitBreak, SuperpoweredEvilSide, DeadlyUpgrade, and often regarded as a OneWingedAngel act for heroes. Related to superpowered {{Animorphism}} and occasionally SuperEmpowering. TurnedRed is the bad guy version of this. A PowerUpFullColorChange and the StandardPowerUpPose may be its visual indicators. A FusionDance sometimes results in this trope. When used by characters with MultiformBalance, expect the SuperMode to be either AllYourPowersCombined or LightningBruiser.

* When Super Sugar Crisp changed its name to Super Golden Crisp, its mascot (Sugar Bear) gained the ability to transform into Super Bear. (This powered-up form was anything but endearing, though, and the concept was soon dropped.)

* The Super Saiyan (and its variants) from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' is easily the TropeCodifier; a legendary warrior with an increasingly long mane of blond hair who gains an order of magnitude of power. This is achieved out of a cross between strength, a pure (good, evil, determined, etc.) heart, and a ''really'' bad day.
** In the later sagas, Trunks and Goten can transform with no difficulty at all, to the shock of Gohan and the adults. Fan speculation indicates that [[LamarckWasRight if fathered by someone who can already transform]], it swaps the Saiyan tail trait out for easier access to the Super Saiyan form. This is confirmed in the epilogue of the series, where Goku and Vegeta's descendants go Super Saiyan without realizing the significance of it, just noting that their hair turns yellow.
* For [[spoiler:Titan Shifters]] in ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'', [[spoiler:transforming into a Titan]] acts as their Super Mode, since they can trigger it at will. [[spoiler:In Episode 25, Eren goes further than this, seemingly having a SuperpoweredEvilSide to his Titan transformation, which is already a pretty amoral transformation.]]
* In ''Anime/TekkamanBlade'', D-Boy undergoes a procedure which has a fifty percent chance of killing him in order to evolve his powered form into "Blastor Mode." Later, his EvilTwin [[TheDragon Tekkaman Evil]] also acquires a Blastor upgrade.
* Despite several Transformations and Fusions, actual Super Modes are fairly rare in ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}''. The main examples are Imperialdramon Fighter Mode (HumongousMecha-like Mon goes from dragon to humanoid form) and later Paladin Mode (Fighter Mode gets a PaletteSwap based on Omnimon, whose powers he's borrowing.) There's Gallantmon Crimson Mode (his vehicle becomes armor) and Beelzemon Blast Mode (gets wings, new gun) from ''Anime/DigimonTamers.'' Although the Burst Mode of ''Anime/DigimonSavers'' fails to qualify [[DeadlyUpgrade on Health and Safety grounds...]] at least, if you use it [[{{Aesoptinum}} improperly.]]
** To be technical about it, Burst Mode actually does qualify (in Savers, at least), the health and safety issues come from triggering the ''wrong'' transformation -- the V-Pet version of the Burst Mode doesn't qualify, but for Savers, the actual DeadlyUpgrade is ''Ruin Mode'', rather than Burst Mode, which in itself doesn't come with negative side effects at all. After learning from the initial mistake, the heroes have no problem avoiding Ruin Mode.
** Digivolving itself can be considered a Super Mode (particularly the Mega forms), especially since the digimon reverts back after the fight. This is especially the case for Patamon in the first series since it's so hard for him to digivolve, but when he does, it's essentially "We've won."
** Digivolving in ''Anime/DigimonXrosWars'' is treated as this, but unlike the previous example, it's more of "temporarily accessing the stronger, future self". With that said, Digivolving is '''not''' the strongest form of the main character.
** Using the [[Anime/DigimonAdventure02 Digimentals]] qualifies, as well; the early premise of the series is that the [[BigBad Digimon Kaiser]] has established towers that prevent "regular" digivolution, which counteracts digivice-inspired power-ups from the original kids. Enter the Digimentals, which can imbue Digimon with alternate "Armor" forms that bypass the control towers' effects (and are usually powered between Champion and Ultimate). The Digimental of Miracles in particular grants a GoldenSuperMode. The ExpandedUniverse declares these to fall into the PowersAsPrograms category, which means that the main team of digimon can use all of them.
* Nanoha's [[CastFromHitPoints Blaster Mode]] and Fate's [[FragileSpeedster Sonic Drive]] in ''NanohaStrikerS''.
** Only seen once is Subaru's [[SupernaturalGoldEyes yellow-eyed]] [[UnstoppableRage berserk-mode.]] She practically lost an arm, and ''didn't notice''.
** Fate's "Overdrive/True Sonic Form", which makes her literally the fastest fighter in the Nanohaverse seen so far.
** ''A's Portable: [[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Battle of Aces]]'' has Full Drive modes for everyone, which gives stat boosts, PowerGlows, and allows usage of the LimitBreak.
** ''NanohaForce'' features the Reacted forms for the Eclipse Drivers.
* Kazuma's 'Contractor' state from ''LightNovel/KazeNoStigma'' falls under this: Lasts for 5 minutes, and leaves him somewhat weakened when it wears off - but with no [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique permanent side-effects]]. While it lasts, his [[GlowingEyesOfDoom eyes turns bright blue]], and he's basically unstoppable. If they [[RedEyesTakeWarning turn red]], ''[[SuperpoweredEvilSide be somewhere else!]]''
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'':
** Rarely, shinigami possess a second release for their power called bankai which enables them to achieve their true potential. Out of more than 6,000 shinigami, less than 30 have reached this level of power and they're all in very high ranking positions, except for a few exiles who used to hold very high ranked positions before their fall from grace. Ichigo is the exception being a substitute shinigami rather than a real one, but he also possesses bankai.
** Shunkou is a technique that fires up the physical body with a massive PowerGlows boost. Only two shinigami have been shown to be able to do this, Soifon and Yoruichi.
** Subverted with the Arrancar resureccion. It looks like they enter SuperMode the way shinigami enter bankai, but really they walk around in a sealed form and then release themselves back into their real form for battle. This is double-subverted with Ulquiorra, who has a secret secondary release that other arrancar don't possess, which takes him to a different level to his resureccion.
** Vizards are shinigami who were forced ForScience to suffer a SuperPoweredEvilSide which manifests through the donning of a hollow mask. If they can master the monster within, they gain the ability to access great power, but only for a very short period of time. The lone exception is [[GenkiGirl Mashiro]] who can maintain this form for up to 15 hours. Ichigo was also able to do this for much of the story, and eventually learned how to combine both his SuperMode powers together (bankai and hollow mask) to create something unique.
** Quincies have access to two SuperMode forms. The traditional version is known as Letzt Stil, an almost-lost technique that is found only within the Ishida family. The modern replacement technique is known as Völlstandig. [[spoiler: Letzt Stil leads to a destruction of a quincy's power after use, whereas Völlstandig doesn't result in this consequence.]]
* {{Guyver}} Gigantic. Pronounced "gih-GAN-tic", it's part power-up and part HumongousMecha, as the wielder is about nine feet tall.
** Recently, the main character has attained the ability to transform it into Guyver Gigantic Exceed, which is the size of a skyscraper. Considering the LensmanArmsRace that drives the series, it was only a matter of time.
* Hyper Mode in ''KidouTenshiAngelicLayer''. In the manga, it's the result of Kaede's tinkering with her Angel, but in the anime, all the first-run Angels have the ability.
* ''GaoGaiGar'''s Cyborg Guy has an ability explicitly named "Hyper Mode", which hugely enhances his strength and speed for three minutes. It's unknown whether he has the same ability as an Evoluder, but it ''is'' implied that his final HumongousMecha, Genesic [=GaoGaiGar=], has the equipment to do something similar.
** It actually does so...for about one second, for the very last push on the last attack - it's so quick that it's hard to tell what it is without going frame-by-frame.
** The cylindrical devices on either side of Cyborg Guy's head when in combat form were batteries storing the energy for his Hyper Mode form. He had 8 of them. Genesic's hair was made up of roughly ''a million of those things.''
* In ''Anime/MobileFighterGGundam'', the Shining Gundam has a Super Mode which Domon initially activates with UnstoppableRage; after McNinja Schwarz Bruder trains him in the art of [[TranquilFury Meikyo Shisui]][[note]]"Clear Mirror, Still Water[[/note]], Domon gains access to [[PowerGlows Golden]] Hyper Mode. He retains this with his MidSeasonUpgrade God Gundam, and it's later shown that the other members of the FiveManBand learned it as well (and it goes without saying that Domon's mentor, Master Asia, had achieved this state long ago).
** Then, there is ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Gundam 00]]'' with its Trans-Am system, which [[MythologyGag triples a Gundam's performance while turning it red]].
*** As for Setsuna when he gets the 00-Raiser, it doesn't double the suit's power. It SQUARES it.
** ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Gundam SEED]]'' has SEED Mode. [[WordOfGod The show's director]] once described it as the physical representation of a character surpassing his limits. Rather than a super mode for the machine, though, it's for the pilot, who enters a sort of Zen state where they gain hyper-awareness and extreme precision and reflexes. One of the reasons Kira's so tough in ''Destiny'' is that he's learned how to activate this state ''at will'' (for everyone else who can use it, it's spontaneous).
** In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn'', the titular Unicorn's NT-D (short for Newtype-Destroyer) is described as "the mode in which the Unicorn's performance limiters are disengaged". When activated the suit's armor expands, revealing a glowing red frame underneath. It becomes faster, mentally controlled by the pilot, gains an I-field (making it invulnerable to beam weapons), and the ability to ''take control of enemy remote weapons'' and use them against their masters. Also doubles as DangerousForbiddenTechnique, as it puts incredible mental strain on the pilot and runs out of power after 5 minutes.
*** There's an upgraded version of this Super Mode that only activates when a fully awakened Newtype is in control: the green psycoframe. While the normal NT-D is constantly attempting to ramp up the pilot's aggression (making it tough to control) and runs out of juice after 5 minutes, the green version has everything entirely under the pilot's control, no time limit, and allows the generation of a Psycofield on its own, allowing it to perform physics-defying stunts like blocking {{Wave Motion Gun}}s or recreating the Axis Shock.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamF91'' plays with this. The titular F91's super mode is actually a design flaw, the system generates too much heat and the transformation (radiator fins expand, face opens) is done for better cooling. That being said, the shredding armor layer and heat signal it leaves behind when moving creates after-images, which can be very useful in battle.
** The [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamAGE Gundam AGE-FX]] has "FX Burst Mode", in which the suit gains incredible speed and a nigh-impenetrable energy barrier, as well as over a dozen beam blades popping out of every conceivable joint on its frame. The one downside is that it can't use its [[AttackDrone C-Funnels]] in this mode.
** ''Anime/GundamBuildFighters'' includes the Star Build Strike's "RG Mode", in which the Gunpla becomes much faster and stronger... but it has limited duration and there's a chance that the increased performance, if mishandled, could break it due to strain. The Gundam X Maoh also demonstrates a sort of SuperMode by double-charging its Satellite System, which turns the X-fins red and allows it to wield a superpowered beam saber, the Maoh Sword.
* ''TenjouTenge'' has the cute, petite [[SuperDeformed chibi]] girl Maya Natsume becoming a HugeSchoolgirl when getting ready for fighting.
* Moka from ''RosarioToVampire'' has two forms: her normal form, which looks like a normal but ''very'' PantyShot-prone schoolgirl, and her SuperpoweredEvilSide, which is taller, has [[BreastExpansion bigger tits]], and GlowingEyesOfDoom.
** Inner-Moka is more just extremely arrogant and violent than evil, but she's very much a SuperMode for Moka. Tsukune gets one of his own later in the manga, his eyes change and his expression deadens and he proceeds to kick the ass of everything in the area that isn't Moka.
** Tsukune himself develops one as a result of his EmergencyTransformation. After repeated [[SuperEmpowering blood injections]], if not for a [[PowerLimiter certain measure]], there would be [[OurGhoulsAreCreepier unpleasant]] [[AxCrazy consequences]].
* Ranma from ''RanmaOneHalf'' has the "cat-fist" ("neko-ken"), which makes him more agile and gives him invisible claws that can cut through anything. It has two big limitations: 1) it can only be induced by [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes an intense fear of cats]], and 2) it gives him the mentality of a cat, making him easy to distract and incapable of using tactics and strategy.
* ''Anime/SailorMoon'''s seasonal upgrades started out with very minor changes, but in S she acquires the Holy Grail, which gives her an upgrade literally referred to as Super Mode: a white skirt with gold and blue trim, a giant froufy back bow, and lots of new little fancy details. [=SuperS=]' seasonal upgrade was to make her Super form her permanent form, giving Sailor Chibi-Moon a similar Super powerup. Eventually, all the other sailors also got a Super form power-up.
** And then in Sailor Stars, she goes one step further with her Eternal form, altering almost every feature of the costume. It starts off as being so powerful that she can only maintain it for a short time, but a few episodes later it becomes her permanent form. A [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]]-only upgrade gave the rest of the teams uniforms in a similar design (and without any of the individual details that had distinguished them from each other in earlier modes).
* In ''Manga/TentaiSenshiSunred'', Sunred, like any good {{Sentai}} hero, has a super mode. His is called Firebird Form, and if the opening ([[BaitAndSwitchCredits maybe]]) is anything to go by, it's very impressive.
* Son Goku in ''Saiyuki''. When his restraining coronet is removed, he reverts to his Sage form, the Seiten Taisei, which amplifies his speed, power and invulnerability to godlike levels but renders him incapable of speech or of distinguishing friend from foe. When the coronet is back on he has no idea what he's done.
* Very common in ''SoulEater'', with subtropes included (usually BishounenLine). There's the basic Resonance of Souls, the more advanced Chain Resonance, [[spoiler: using the power of the Black Blood]], Maka's Witch Hunter [[spoiler: and Demon Hunter attacks]], Black☆Star's Uncanny Sword mode [[spoiler: and the blade modes after unlocking Masamune's true power]], Free's werewolf form, Mosquito's younger forms, and many others.
** And later [[spoiler: Black Star and Death the Kid]] uses the Insanity.
*** Followed by Kid activating [[spoiler: two of]] the Sanzu Lines himself, using his 'killing intent' (and, apparently, his father's power) to destroy Noah. [[NotQuiteDead Sort of]].
**** Kid's Sanzu Lines turn out to be a [[PowerLimiter different trope]], functioning as a Super Mode only until they began, one after the other, to [[DeadlyUpgrade become permenant]].
** As both Maka and Black Star's original super-modes have become standard, they've essentially been replaced by their upgrades - Witch Hunter by Demon Hunter, and the improper version of the Uncanny mode with the ''real'' one.
* In ''{{Naruto}}'', both Jiraiya and Naruto have the [[InHarmonyWithNature "Sage Mode"]]. By drawing on the natural energy around them, they can drastically increase their strength, speed, endurance, and durability, as well as get a whole new array of abilities and heightened senses. The difference between Jiraiya and Naruto is that, while Jiraiya has achieved an "Imperfect Form", which changed his appearance quite a lot, giving him toad-like limbs, Naruto has achieved a "Perfect Form", and the only visible effects of his Sage Mode are a pair of red-lidded, [[AnimalEyes golden frog eyes]], which are said to be the mark of a true sage. The only physical drawback for both the forms is the [[HourOfPower time limit]], however, with proper planning the form can be exploited to handle most combat situations. [[spoiler: Though Naruto can enter it near instantly now with further practice, has sustained a higher duration when needed, and raised his Rasenshuriken count of it from two to three. Naruto can now combine Sage Mode with Biju Mode, making his power go UpToEleven.]]
** Also, [[spoiler:Kabuto has his own version of Sage Mode, called "Snake Sage Mode" (Though Kabuto calls it "Dragon Sage Mode") which is a snake/dragon equivalent of the toad one used by Naruto and Jiraiya, complete with changing his appearance to a reptilian-one, even though he has achieved a "Perfect Form" just like Naruto.]]
** Later chapter reveals that [[spoiler:Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, has his own version as well, which, unlike the other three examples, does not appear to have an AnimalMotif, but a "God Motif", which gives him some FacialMarkings. And it's ''FREAKIN' awesome.'']]
** The Jinchukuri's (i.e. Naruto) Bijuu forms also count here. It requires rage to unlock it, similar to the Super Saiyan. [[spoiler: However Naruto and Bee can fully control Kurama and Gyuki respectively, giving Naruto a GoldenSuperMode and Bee a Full Power Mode.]]
** There's the [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique "Chakra Gates"]] used by Lee and Guy, increasing their physical stats humongously. By pushing it to its limit though, the power output will inevitably kill the user.
** The Akimichi Clan has their own called 'Calorie Control' which produces butterfly wings out of chakra from their back. Inexperienced Akimichi access this with the forbidden Red Pill which, unless Tsunade is there, means certain death. However, experienced Akimichi like Choji and Choza can access this to increase their speed, physical power, and endurance to tremendous amounts.
* A couple in ''MahouSenseiNegima''. First, [[spoiler:Albireo's Pactio]] which is completely broken, letting him [[spoiler:take on the form of people he has met for limited periods of time. Even people like Nagi.]] And he was already pretty badass. The kanka technique that Takahata, Asuna and Vanderburg use, which drastically increases speed and power, at a downside of draining magic and ki at what is implied to be a a decent bit faster for both than fighting normally with either alone. Also Negi's [[spoiler:black magic, which can have damaging effects on his psyche due to its [[AllThereInTheManual nature to encompass and accept everything]], it also has at least five modes, depending on what spells it's used with. Its also probably going to turn him into a demon (something he has no problems with, considering [[NobleDemon his master]], and has a slight chance of killing him. Although Negi himself mentions that [[GenreSavvy he's really not worried about his odds of survival.]]]]
** And now [[spoiler: he actually ''has'' gone demon, or at least, partially. Having mastered his super form, he presumably no longer has to deal with the side effects, and he curb stomps Quartum like he was nothing.]]
* Kirihara Akaya's Devil Mode in ''ThePrinceOfTennis''. There's also Muga no Kyouchi ("State of Self-Actualization") and its three doors, ''especially'' Ten'i Muhou no Kiwami (literally "The Pinnacle of Perfection").
* ''OnePiece'': Monkey D. Luffy develops the Gear transformations in the Enies Lobby arc. The first one, Gear Second, pumps blood in his body to strengthen his organs, giving his body a pink hue with purple, glowing veins, while sweat steams on his body, giving an appearance similar to a BattleAura. He's [[LightningBruiser MUCH faster (able to go Hypersonic+ speeds) and MUCH stronger (the mere punches he throws causes the air around him to impact onto his target)]] and names all of his attacks with the word "Jet" as a prefix for all of them. His Gear Third technique uses air to blow up his body parts to massive sizes, able to destroy entire towers in one punch. However, his speed heavily [[MightyGlacier decreases]] and afterwards he temporarily [[HeroicRROD shrinks.]] Obviously, he uses his Gear Second more.
** To a lesser extent, some of the other members of the crew have super modes too, like Zoro's Asura which spawns an extra 2 heads and 4 extra arms to allow him to use 9 swords at a time, Chopper's Monster Point form (Even though that counts more as a DangerousForbiddenTechnique ([[spoiler: at least pre-TimeSkip]])), and Sanji's Diable Jambe which literally sets his leg on fire.
** Luffy's Gear Second also counts as a low-tier DangerousForbiddenTechnique, at least according to Lucci, who observes that using it stresses his body past its limit and shortens his life, similar to modern-day doping. (Luffy acknowledges this, and simply states that he'd rather shorten his life than lose his Nakama.) Interestingly, there's no indication that Gear Third has such long-term effects, since its side-effects are immediate and wear off within minutes.
*** The drawback appears to only come from overusing the ability. The main feature of Gear Second is that it drastically increases his metabolism making all his bodily functions work that much better at the cost of consuming his body's nutrient stores quicker. When he overused it against Lucci he was trying to sustain use with an already starved body. Later on, short bursts of the ability, or using it then eating immediately after show no drawbacks.
* Several times during the course of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' Unit 01 goes into "berserk" mode where it operates autonomously and becomes much more powerful than it normally is - though this is less a Super Mode than it is the Eva getting [[UnstoppableRage angry enough]] to temporarily overpower its {{Power Limiter}}s.
** Played straight, however, in ''[[{{RebuildOfEvangelion}} Rebuild of Evangelion]]'', where in the second movie, Shinji somehow makes his Eva enter a state where it can fire {{Eye Beam}}s and has greatly increased control over its substantially more powerful AT field. The third movie identifies it as the Eva transforming into a 'pseudo-evolved state', caused by the pilot's complete loss of emotional self-control; in Shinji's case, it ended up [[spoiler:starting Third Impact]]. Then at the end of the movie, it turns out that [[EvilCounterpart Unit 13]] is capable of achieving this state as well, which it promptly does in response to [[spoiler:Kaworu losing his shit when he realizes he and Shinji had been fooled by Gendo to start Fourth Impact]]. Bottom line: if an Eva starts to glow like Adam, '''''run like hell''''' 'cause chances are [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt the world is about to end]].
*** Another Super Mode appears in the second and third movies as well: Unit 02 is capable of turning off its {{Power Limiter}}s at will to revert into a bestial form that behaves more like a rabid animal than a human. In the second film, Mari invokes it with the now-memetic line ''"Invert controls; backdoor code: '''THE BEAST'''"''; in the third, Asuka uses ''"Mode change: Code 777"'' instead, [[spoiler:making the Eva adopt a more animalistic appearance: digitigrade legs, prominent fangs and even an animate tail]]. In this mode the Eva is capable of, among other things, ''catching Zeruel-grade {{Eye Beam}}s with its mouth'' and [[NoSell slapping them aside as if they were nothing]]. The only downside is that it makes the pilot go AxCrazy for the duration of the mode and it's also stated to cause [[MindRape mental contamination]], [[InformedAttribute though we haven't seen any ill-effects from that]].
* In ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'', after Yusuke [[spoiler:dies and comes back to life]], he is able to change into his demon form, which gives him access to both spirit and demon energy. Kurama can also revert back to Yoko Kurama (who was much stronger), and Hiei also has his demon form (where multiple eyes sprout on his body, used only once in the series); Hiei can also absorb his Dragon of the Darkness Flame attack, which grants a massive power boost.
** Toguro also has his transformation to 100% power, which temporarily causes an eclipse and kills half of the audience in the process. It's every bit as cool as the 30+ episode buildup to it implied.
* The ''Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula'' series has the Zero Zone. Similar to the ''Gundam SEED'' case above, this particular mode is the representation of surpassing the character's limits, A state where a driver can read one's mind with their car, in which the user can see a bit of the future, look into other driver's thoughts and also predict their movements.
* When [[HigurashiNoNakuKoroNi Ryuugu Rena]] enters "adorable mode", she does not lose.
* In ''Manga/FairyTail'' the Dragon Slayers have Dragon Force.
* Kinji's "Hysteria Mode" from ''HidanNoAria'', which has certain trigger conditions.
* The two protagonists of ''TigerAndBunny'' play this trope straight with their superpower ''Hundred Power'' which amplifies their existing human abilities by 100 times but only lasts for five minutes in addition to this they have the Good Luck Mode, a modification in their PoweredArmor that enhances their power by [[spoiler:[[{{Subversion}} not a damn bit]] -- but it sure looks cool, doesn't it?]]
* While most ''PrettyCure'' series have different {{Super Mode}}s being seen only in movies, ''FreshPrettyCure'' was the first to introduce a SuperMode, the Cure Angel form, though it was for only one Cure at a time. ''HeartcatchPrecure'''s Super Silhouette would be the first series to give the team a SuperMode.
* In ''LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex'', there's a few examples:
** One is Index's John's Pen mode, which more or less allows her to use some of her vast spell knowledge to take out serious threats.
** The second, and more visibly obvious, is [[spoiler:[[OneWingedAngel awakened espers]]. Both Accelerator and Kakine have reached that point, and both received a boost to their powers. Accelerator managed to do it ''twice'', though.]]
** The third is to be [[spoiler:fused with the MISAKA Network. Both Hyouka Kazakiri and ''Mikoto Misaka'' are forced to fuse against their will, significantly boosting each one's power, including potentially to ''Level 6'' in Mikoto's case (though Hyouka voluntarily does it later on).]]
* Optimus Prime's Super Mode from ''TransformersArmada'', ''TransformersEnergon'', and ''TransformersCybertron''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]

* [[TheIncredibleHulk The Hulk]] has multiple forms, but the one that best fits this trope is his "Worldbreaker" mode, which can easily do [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin what its name suggests]].
* {{Superman}} achieves his SuperMode by literally flying into the sun and staying there for a little bit. His power grows to the level where he can defeat ''{{Darkseid}}'' with minimum effort.
* ''ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW'': Remember Twilight's glowing eyes from the series' pilot? [[spoiler:The magic of the comet infuses Twilight with even more power, causing her eyes to glow, a powerful aura to form around her, and to float off the ground, ending with a magical burst that defeats Chrysalis.]]

* Super Hottie Goddess from FanFic/Hottie3TheBestFanFicInTheWorld
* In the ''FanFic/FacingTheFutureSeries'', Danny has unlocked such a mode that triggers under moments of extreme duress. While Danny gains a major boost in power in this form, he is unable to control it, and overuse of it could cause his body to burn out. [[spoiler:However, it has been shown in the first story of the series that not only will Danny get control of it, but Sam will unlock one too]].
* In the ''FanFic/TheSumOfOurSins'' It is told that the royal sister's normal, tall, sparkly forms are this. Twilight reaches this form when she is in a fit of rage after finding out Rainbow Dash had been absorbed by the God's Sin. Turns out in this universe every race can ascend to a higher form, if they just break their body's magical limits. It's also worth mentioning that the Rainbow powers are used like this.
* In the ''Fanfic/PonyPOVSeries'', [[BadFuture Dark World!]]Derpy and Traitor Dash's Elements (Loyalty and Treachery/Free Will) give them forms of this. Derpy's [[LimitBreak turns off all her body's natural limiters]] and increases her strength to the point she can do the work of an entire team of Pegasi by herself. At first this does have a toll on her body (though Rarity and Applejack have [[HealingHands Healing Hooves]]), but she gradually builds up her endurance to use it more frequently. In Traitor Dash's case, she can transform into Ender Dash, her already incredible speed increasing to the point she can perform a FlashStep and both her Pegasus magic and strength. [[spoiler:She retains this after her HeelFaceTurn, possibly even becoming stronger, to the point her Sonic Rainboom (called Sonic Endboom in this form) can allow her to ''escape the atmosphere'' and even break through [[BiggerBad Nightmare Paradox]]'s armor.]]

[[folder:Literature]]

* The ''StarWars'' franchise has a Super Mode called [[http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Oneness Oneness]], a state of perfect harmony with TheForce. While this is normally only possible after death, there are a few cases of Force-sensitives achieving this state in life. As a living extension of TheForce itself, a person in Oneness can perform feats far beyond even the strongest Jedi and Sith. It is impossible for a Dark Side practitioner to enter this state given that it requires the one thing no Dark Side user would ever consider: complete and total surrender to the Will of TheForce. The most awesome example of Oneness is Ganner Rhysode's YouShallNotPass [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome moment]].
** Or Dorsk 81's throwing 17 star destroyers half-way across the star-system.
* ''Literature/MuneShinri'' has the Sage's trance (given the nature of the work, it's likely inspired by ''{{Naruto}}'').
* ''PercyJacksonAndTheOlympians'' displays two possible versions of this one being in The Last Olympian where he receives the curse/blessing of Achilles. The second appears in both the The Last Olympian and The Son of Neptune where he enters a battle mode in which he generates a localized hurricane around his body that allows him to defeat a titan in single combat. It should be noted that he seems to lack control over the hurricane barrier.
* ''Literature/LegacyOfTheDragokin'': Ravage, an already big and strong guy, can make himself bigger and stronger still. He also gains points to his durability and can NoSell attacks that would have given him trouble before.
* Rachel can do this in ''{{Literature/Animorphs}}'' The Return, thanks to Crayak. She morphs into a bigger, more muscular version of herself with long claws.

[[folder: Live Action TV ]]

* ''{{Buffyverse}}'':
** Buffyverse vampires are generally that bit more dangerous when they go GameFace, especially if the vampire is Series/{{Angel}}. For him, this is really a super-charged version of TheCoatsAreOff; in the sense that he can still fight effectively enough beforehand, but when his fangs extend, his opponent(s) are in ''very'' serious trouble.
** In Pylea this becomes even more pronounced. Due to it's unique properties, Vampires are rendered completely human until they put on their GameFace, at which point they become the completely feral "Van-Tal", implied to be the true form of the demon that inhabits them.
** In the season four finale of ''Buffy'', the Enjoining Spell combines the Scooby Gang's various attributes into a reality-warping force of nature inhabiting Buffy's body. The drawback is that it taps into the spirit of the First Slayer, who spends the following episode trying to kill them in their dreams.
** Doyle's bracken demon mode.
* KITT's Super Pursuit Mode in the last season of ''KnightRider''.
** ...and [=KI3T=] in the 2008 TV movie and (just about) every episode in the resulting TV series.
* ''Franchise/SuperSentai'' and ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' have two standard variations: those originating in ''Sentai'' are usually lightly-armored upgrades available to the whole team (at least to the core team for the most part), while ''Rangers'' adds "Battlizer" modes that are heavily armored and armed to the teeth, usually [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority only for the Red Rangers]] (though other male Rangers usually get their own battlized versions in the toyline).
** ''Series/BakuryuuSentaiAbaranger'' had Abare Mode, which was available from the first episode. ''Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder'' avoided using footage of it until the first big Red vs White Ranger fight. Then ''Abaranger'' gave Red an exclusive upgrade (a rarity for ''Sentai''), and ''Dino Thunder'' added a Battlizer mode on top of that.
** ''Series/SamuraiSentaiShinkenger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersSamurai'' have quite an odd example, as the Rangers pass around a single [[TransformationTrinket Super Mode Trinket]]; so everyone can use any upgrade, but only one Ranger at a time. Subverted with ''Power Rangers''' Mega Mode and Shogun Mode (which would otherwise be the Battlizer-style upgrade) as well; though more armored and visually impressive than the regular Ranger suits, they're only used to pilot the Megazords, not for fighting (barring one use of Shogun Mode in the finale).
* In the ''Franchise/KamenRider'' franchise, ''Series/KamenRiderStronger'' and all of the Heisei-era main Riders, plus several secondary ones, get more powerful forms near the end of their series. Naturally, a lot of these include new merchandise (usually a large sword) to sell with them.
** For extra fun, ''Series/KamenRiderDecade'' Complete Form can summon copies of his nine predecessors' Super Modes to perform tandem versions of their {{Finishing Move}}s.
** Since ''Decade'', tie-in movies both near and after the end of the series usually undergo SerialEscalation, granting a Rider a Super-er Mode and even a Super-est Mode.
* ''Series/MadanSenkiRyukendo'''s eponymous hero has 9 different forms, including his default one. One of them is titled "God Ryukendo", and that's not even his most powerful form.
* Riser Shirogane in ''GenSeiShinJustiriser'', a powered-up form of Riser Glen.
* R1 Max in ''Series/TomicaHeroRescueForce''
* Fire-1 X in ''Series/TomicaHeroRescueFire''
* ''Franchise/UltraSeries''
** ''Series/UltramanMebius'' has ''four'' super modes -- Mebius Brave, achieved when Ultraman Hikari lends him his TransformationTrinket, Mebius Burning Brave, which is fueled by ThePowerOfFriendship, [[spoiler:Mebius Phoenix Brave, which is gained when he does a FusionDance with his teammates,]] and Mebius Infinity, a form gained by a FusionDance with the Ultra Brothers.
** Played with by Ultraman Hikari. He first appear as Hunter Knight Tsurugi, which is his super mode, but it doesn't potrayed that way because the armor was corrupted by his rage. He later assume the form without give in to rage, and finally unlock its true power.
** ''Super'' Series/UltramanTaro, gained via Ultra Brother FusionDance in the compilation flick, ''Ultraman Story''.
** Glitter Tiga for Series/UltramanTiga.
** Gaia Supreme for Series/UltramanGaia.
** Eclipse Mode for Series/UltramanCosmos; the movie add Future Mode.
** Crusher Mode for [[Series/UltramanCosmos Ultraman Justice]].
** Ultraman Legend for Ultraman Cosmos and Ultraman Justice's FusionDance.
** Ultraman Noa for Series/UltramanNexus.
** [[TheBerserker Burst Mode]] for [[Series/UltraGalaxyMegaMonsterBattle Reimon]], although it's SuperpoweredEvilSide.
** Ultimate Zero for Franchise/UltramanZero.
** Ultraman Saga for Ultraman Zero, Series/UltramanDyna and Ultraman Cosmos's FusionDance.
* ''Series/StarTrekVoyager''
** The ''USS Prometheus'' has one of these.
** So did the future version of ''Voyager'' itself in the GrandFinale. It could don super armor capable of shrugging off the best efforts of the Borg (for a time).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Multiple Media]]

* Axonn's super mode in ''{{BIONICLE}}'' is essentially the combination of a very controlled version of an UnstoppableRage and TheJuggernaut. He becomes immune to every attack his foes can toss at him, and the effect wears out after he has delivered a spectacular beating in them. It can be accessed by making him very mad.
** The Kaita and Nui [[FusionDance fusions]] were also regarded as this, in a scene or two, but [[ForgottenPhlebotinum they never appear in the story anymore]].

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mythology and Religion]]

* This is OlderThanPrint: Cuchulain, [[CelticMythology Irish folkloric]] hero, when particularly angry, would enter a super mode where he was stronger, faster, tougher, etc. On the down side, he [[OneWingedAngel changed into a terrible monster]]. His muscles bulged and twisted around in his body, and some joints would reverse, hence the name "Warp Spasm". Additionally, one eye would grow as big as a goblet, the other eye would shrink to a pinhole and recede into his skull, his mouth would grow and his hair would stand on end. And given that in his "normal" mode he can throw spears into the clouds and have them come down on his enemy minutes later, or leap clear over fortress walls, his Super Mode was pretty damn super indeed.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Tabletop Games ]]

* Clerics, Druids and Wizards can all do this in ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' with the right feats.
** Feats or spells. Clerics in 3rd and 3.5 Ed can do it with the right domain choices, if available (Destruction + Strength. A smite that already has a good bonus getting an ''additional'' bonus from the Feat of Strength power. Yeah, Can you say "cleaved in 'twain"?)
*** [[Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick ''Great cleavage''!]] *snicker*
** Or any of those three classes when using the Shapechange spell. With the right choice of form, the power-up can be exceedingly impressive.
** The Barbarian's Rage, which makes him all around meaner and tougher to his enemies for about half a dozen game rounds. This is a CharlesAtlasSuperpower, because it is pretty much done by further adrenalizing an already trained and powerful body. The SuperMode is powerful enough that ''the barbarian ignores all wounds, including incapacitating and fatal ones, while it is active''. Afterwards, however [[CriticalExistenceFailure ...]]
*** The Barbarian (Rage mode or not) doesn't ignore damage. The Frenzied Berserker after gaining level 4 in the [=PrC=] does while in their SuperMode.
*** Now, in 4e, it is explicitly supernatural. It's the result of temporary, willing possession by primal spirits, some of which are subtle enough you might not even notice the feats performed aren't possible. Others set you on fire. Wardens also get super modes that last for the whole combat as daily powers, temporarily transforming themselves into part-spirit beings with varying powers.
** Another one is sort of implied for dragons, or at least dragons who prefer to stay in humanoid forms rather than their natural state (such as song dragons). When they revert, they're going from an average humanoid to a giant dragon with claws, wings, armoured scales and very, very sharp teeth.
* Building these is fairly simple in ''{{GURPS}}'' but a particularly funny example appears in the Biotech supplement where the [[CatGirl Felicia]] parahuman template has a Super Mode that causes their libido to go into overdrive afterward.
* In the ''TabletopGame/YuGiOh'' card game, certain Synchro monsters get "Assault Modes" where they become more powerful stat-wise, and get stronger effects. Stardust and Red Archfiend also have Majestic forms and Accel Sychro forms too [[note]]"Shooting Star Dragon" and "Red Nova Dragon" for Stardust and Red Archfiend, respectively.[[/note]]
** And, in the anime series' finale, they go even further with [[spoiler: Shooting Quasar Dragon]], a form of Stardust achieved by entering the golden [[spoiler: Over Top Clear Mind]] Super Mode. Note: The card DOES exist in reality. Holy crap...
* Game mechanic of Privateer Press's {{Monsterpocalypse}}. Here called Hyper Mode (and with Ultra, Mega, and Quantum variants, depending on rarity), you attempt to accumulate Power Dice by securing (or crushing) buildings, holding power zones, destroying units, etc. When you have enough, your monster can go Hyper, gaining different stats. Generally, these are improved, though some have lower defense or health and drastically altered powers, resulting less in a power up and more in a significant strategy change. You can be dropped out of Hyper Mode by certain attacks (including a [[TapOnTheHead Headbutt]]) or drop out willingly (useful if your Alpha has higher defense). You also enter Hyper Mode automatically when your Alpha mode is depleted of health, resulting in something like TurnsRed.
* Various groups in ''{{Exalted}}'' can do this. Among the most prominent are Lunars using the Deadly Beastman Transformation Knack and Infernals using Shintai Charms.
* This is why ''TabletopGame/BigEyesSmallMouth'' has the Alternate Form power. It's not hugely powerful - without modifiers you spend nine points on something to give you +10 points - and it's required that there's some drawback (even if it's only social) to prevent you from simply morphing into Omnikill Form and spending the rest of your life there.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''Franchise/TheElderScrolls'':
** ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsIVOblivion'':
*** The Mythic Dawn cultists that are the main enemies in the story campaign summon demonic swords and armor when threatened.
*** The Orc race's Berserker Rage halves incoming damage and doubles outgoing damage for a short time.
*** The spell crafting system makes it possible for the player to combine these and several other buff spells into one super-spell that eats their entire mana bar at a go. At high levels, one can go from a skinny mage in robes to an imposing warrior in full heavy plate armor in a few seconds... until the spell wears off.
** ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'':
*** The [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent werewolf]] transformation counts on paper, although in practice it's usually AwesomeButImpractical to the point of nearing UselessUsefulSpell territory due to the inability to use healing potions or gear. The ''Dawnguard'' expansion makes it somewhat more useful.
*** The ''Dawnguard'' expansion also adds [[OurVampiresAreDifferent Vampire Lord]] mode for those that take their character down that route.
*** The ''Dragonborn'' expansion features a shout called [[https://images.nonexiste.net/popular/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Dragonborn-Dragon-Aspect-Shout1.jpeg Dragon Aspect]] which gives the user increased abilities while at the same time giving them an aura glow in the form of a dragon.
* In ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'', while some of the characters' hyper-combos are transformations (i.e., Dante's Devil Trigger and Phoenix's evil version, Dark Phoenix), the most notable transformation isn't even a hyper-combo at all: The X-Factor, which increases in quality depending on how many teammates were knocked-out in the fight.
** The expanded rerelease, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, added several more characters with Super Modes, most notably [[PhoenixWrightAceAttorney Phoenix Wright]] (not the same as the above Phoenix) with his ability to become an unstoppable justice juggernaut after collecting enough evidence, easily able to kill anyone in the game with a simple combo ending with his Turnabout Mode-only Hyper Combo. The powered up lawyer glows gold, and a mere [[GivingSomeonethePointerFinger wave of his arm]] summons a massive simulacrum of his extended arm, smiting his foe.
* In ''[[ZettaiHeroProject ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman]]'', the player can activate "Unlosing Mode" after gathering enough power. Unlosing Mode greatly boosts one of the player's stats for a set number of turns.
* Kratos' Rage Of The Gods/Titans/Sparta from the ''VideoGame/GodOfWar'' games.
* Keats' Transcend Mode, from ''VideoGame/{{Folklore}}''.
* Sora's Drive Forms (particularly the Final Form) in ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII'', with the exception of Anti Form, which is more of a SuperpoweredEvilSide. The Command Styles in ''Birth by Sleep'' may also count.
* ''RobotAlchemicDrive'': Each of the controllable robots has a super mode (Vavel starts with its own super mode that gets upgraded halfway through the game, while Glangg and Lagioule have to earn their's). The trade-off is that activating the super mode puts the player on a three-minute time limit: exceeding that limit will destroy the robot, resulting in a game over.
* Super Sonic from ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'', obtained after collecting all the Chaos Emeralds. There's also Hyper Sonic, with all the Super Emeralds, which can cause a huge flash when jumping that causes ''all enemies on-screen to be destroyed.''
** In this mode, his eyes turn red, and his quills stand up and [[GoldenSuperMode glow yellow]]. It's highly reminiscent of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', which, considering creator Yuji Naka is a huge fan of, isn't surprising.
** Furthermore, several other characters have gone into "super" forms over the course of the story. Most notable would be Super Ix from ''VideoGame/SonicChronicles'', for being one of only two super transformations that used the Master Emerald and the first humanoid villain to use a super transformation. There's also Super Mecha Sonic, in ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'', the other Super form achieved through the Master Emerald, a robot that used a super transformation - and in a boss fight where the player is ''not''.
** Shadow also features a Super transformation, featuring a lemon yellow color. To date he's achieved it with the Chaos Emeralds three times.
*** Silver is also given a Super form by Super Sonic himself in ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Sonic 2006]]''.
** Knuckles, like Sonic, is also able to use the Chaos Emeralds to gain a Super form, and use the Super Emeralds to achive Hyper Knuckles. Both forms have him glow pink. His hyper form can kill everybody on screen simply by gliding into walls at a high speed.
** Tails also gets a super form, but only with the Super Emeralds from ''Sonic & Knuckles'' combined with ''Sonic 3''. Among the usual increased speed and invincibility, but has four birds that he shares his power with, who fly around killing things on their own.
** Darkspine- and Excalibur Sonic from the [[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries Storybook Series]].
** Burning Blaze from the ''[[VideoGame/SonicRush Rush]]'' [[VideoGame/SonicRushAdventure games]].
** As a [[VideoGame/SonicUnleashed Werehog]], Sonic has an Unleashed Mode.
* Dante's various demonic forms (a.k.a. Devil Trigger) in the ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry'' series -- particularly his ultra-powerful "Sparda" form, which is actually an EleventhHourSuperpower courtesy of his father. Overlaps with OneWingedAngel and LimitBreak.
** Enemies can also Devil Trigger in [[HarderThanHard Dante Must Die]] difficulty, making them tougher. Usually, the weaker the enemy, the sooner they will Devil Trigger.
* Jaster Rogue's "Star King" form in ''VideoGame/RogueGalaxy''. It doesn't actually seem to make you any stronger, in-game, but you DO get some fairly impressive [[CutscenePowerToTheMax Cutscene Superpowers]], and it looks undeniably BadAss.
** Actually, it increases his maximum Hit Points by a certain percentage, but by the time you first get to it, you'll probably be very close to max Hit Points anyway.
* ''VideoGame/{{R-Type}} 3'' has a Hyper Mode which replaces your WaveMotionGun with a SpamAttack.
* The Super-charged Gravity Gun at the end of ''VideoGame/{{Half-Life 2}}'' and the beginning of ''Half-Life 2: Episode One'', which allowed the player to pick up almost anything (including enemy soldiers and APCs) and throw it.
* Terra's Trance/Morph mode in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI''. Among other things, it doubles her damage output and halves incoming magic damage.
** Vincent Valentine's Limit Break transformations in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''. Unique in that his forms look nothing like him and are uncontrollable until the battle ends.
** Every character's Trance mode in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX''.
*** What's interesting about ''Final Fantasy IX's'' case is that [[spoiler:the big Bad's One Winged Angel form '''''is''''' a Super Mode; after giving up on wielding the game's Summon Magic, he actually seeks out and harnesses the game's own Limit Break system to empower himself!]]
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2'' has a trio of 'Special Dresspheres' unique to each of the girls. By switching between every normal Dressphere on their grid, they can undergo a ''Anime/SailorMoon''-esque transformation and take on boss-like forms that replaces the other two combatants.
** The Cosmos Warriors of ''VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy's'' [=EX-Mode=] has them either equip their InfinityPlusOneSword(s) or go into their respective Super Modes (including [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyI upgra]][[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIII ding]][=/=][[VideoGame/FinalFantasyV mastering]] their [[JobSystem job classes]], [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI entering]] [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX a Trance]], [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV or something else]] [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII related to the mechanics]] [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX or lore of]] [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXI their respective games]]). On the other hand, ([[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV alm]][[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII ost]]) '''all''' of Chaos' Warriors enter their respective OneWingedAngel forms.
* Nariko gets one of these at the end of ''VideoGame/HeavenlySword.''
* The battle with the FinalBoss of the SNES game ''VideoGame/SuperGodzilla'' has Franchise/{{Godzilla}} transform into the much more powerful [[TitleDrop Super Godzilla]], allowing him to go toe-to-toe with Bagan.
* ''VideoGame/CrimzonClover'' has Break Mode, activated by pressing the bomb button at 100% Break Gauge. It increases your firepower, doubles your Break Rate, and causes stars to shower while damaging enemes. During Break Mode, if you fill the gauge before Break Mode runs out, you can activate Double Break Mode, which gives you even more firepower and doubles your Break Rate ''again.''
* From all of ''VideoGame/MegaManX'''s armors, the [[color:purple:Ultimate Armor]] stands out, a secret armor accessed only through a cheat code, or, in some games, beating the game under special circumstances. It's the most [[GameBreaker broken]] armor in the series, having several abilities that make some of the games much easier.
** The same could be said for Zero's own [[color:crimson:Ultimate]] upgrade in ''VideoGame/MegaManZero''. It increases all his stats, and executing certain button combinations allow him to use {{Charge Attack}}s without, y'know, actually ''charging'' them.
** All playable characters in ''VideoGame/MegaManXCommandMission'' has unique ''Hyper Mode''.
*** For X, it's X Fire, and after defeat certain BonusBoss, the aforementioned Ultimate X.
*** Zero starts with Black Zero, and like X, defeating a certain BonusBoss gives him Absolute Zero.
*** Axl's Stealth Form.
*** Spider's Trickstar.
*** Massimo's Glint Armor.
*** Marino's Quicksilver.
*** Cinnamon's Iron Maiden.
** ''Any'' EM Wave Change in ''MegaManStarForce'', which transforms people from "random guy on the street" to "electromagnetic engine of destruction". ''2'' gives secondary, tertiary and even quaternary Super Modes in the forms of Tribe On (one element), Double Tribe (two elements), and the obscenely powerful Tribe King (which requires OneGameForThePriceOfTwo). There's also the Element + Void tertiary mode known as Mega Man Rogue, which can't even be accessed until you've beaten the game and is somewhat AwesomeButImpractical.
* ''VideoGame/{{Shatterhand}}'' has a mode activated by getting the same sets of robot powerups twice in a row.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Persona 3}}'', Aigis is able use "Orgia mode" which releasing her limiter upon the order by MC which increase her performance alot. In FES her sister Metis also able to use a somewhat improve version call "Neo Orgia Mode" since Aigis own one been fried after the battle with Metis. The downside is that after it runs out, they overheat and become inactive for a few turns.
** Aigis regains her Orgia Mode in ''Persona4Arena''. It's also been improved, allowing her to continue fighting even after overheating (though her performance still suffers somewhat in that case).
* While Mario's powerup forms tend to be more along the lines of SwissArmyHero; the Fire Flower is treated as his SuperMode in the SuperMarioBrosSuperShow. Many of the major bosses have their own SuperMode, as well.
** The Super Star or Starman item in the game series are also super modes for the Mario Bros. The item makes them invincible and flash a bunch of different colors, sparkle, flash in rainbow colors, or something else, depending on the game. ''SuperPaperMario'' has the characters become [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever giant 8-bit pixel version of themselves]] and flatten anyone that gets in the way.
* Some OriginalGeneration in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' use this.
** Cybuster can power up by being possessed by the spirit of wind Cyfis, culminating in the godlike Full Possession Mode.
** In ''VideoGame/EndlessFrontier'', Alteisen Nacht and Weisritter Abend will enter Rage Mode when they use Overdrive attack.
** In ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsZ'', Gunleon transform into Magna Mode to perform its two strongest attacks.
* In ''VideoGame/KingdomsOfAmalurReckoning'', "Reckoning" Mode is this for the Fateless One. Everything but the Fateless One goes into slow motion as he/she fights with weapons empowered by the Weave of Fate. "Reckoning" also allows Finishers which consist of the Fateless One ripping out opponents' fate and beating them to death with it.
* Overlimit and its renamed variations throughout the ''TalesSeries''. It generally allows arts to be used rapidly, the temporary use of some special arts (Including the flashy [[LimitBreak Mystic Artes]]), and some degree of protection from enemy attacks.
** Ludger, the protagonist of ''VideoGame/TalesOfXillia2'' has a second one in the form of his Corpse Shell transformation, which gives him a [[BladeOnAStick lance]], a new moveset, invincibility (Getting hit reduces the duration, however), the ability to perform nearly infinite combos (Only limited by the duration of the mode), and access to another Mystic Arte. It's a total GameBreaker if used properly, as not even the strongest bosses can survive a single combo from it if you trigger it while they've got a massive damage bonus on them from exploiting their weak points. If you ''really'' want to go for maximum overkill, it's possible to do a lengthy combo using the aforementioned Overlimit, end it with a Mystic Arte, then transition into this mode to keep the combo going, then hit them with ''another'' Mystic Arte before it ends.
* The Tengu Pro Energy Drive in ''VideoGame/PN03'' gives an invincible aura and a boost in Palm Shot firepower.
* Hard Drive Divinity in {{Neptunia}}. Typically changes the appearance of the user and her weapon and [[PowerFloats makes her hover]]; in [[GenkiGirl Neptune's]] case, it also changes her voice. In the [[VideoGame/HyperdimensionNeptunia original game]], HDD lasts indefinitely until the battle ends or the user is incapacitated, while in [[HyperdimensionNeptuniaMk2 the series reboot]], HDD lasts as long as the user still has Skill Points to spare.
* In ''VideoGame/AsurasWrath'', The Guardian Generals of the Demigod race can enter a special mode called a Vajra Form, where they have a halo behind their back that represents their Mantra type, and is the only one any of them can obtain naturally without extra Mantra from Humans. There are some occasional differences, however:
** [[FatBastard Wyzen]] not only has a regular Vajra mode, but when using Mantra and human souls, he can turn into a massive 100 foot Humanoid giant, and with at least Hundreds of ''MILLIONS'' of souls, he can turn into the [[AttackOfThe50FootWhatever massive]] huge ''planet'' sized Gongen Wyzen. [[spoiler:When Asura gets his memories back and awakens to his rage, the downside of this last form makes itself clear, as Asura destroys him with a powerful blow to the colossal finger that Wyzen was trying to use to crush him like a bug]].
** Deus, long with a regular Vajra form, [[spoiler: fuses with the completed Karma Fortress to become Devanam Sakra Indra Deus, where he controls the Karma Fortress' movements at will, and powers himself up and gives him a whitish energy mask when fighting on foot to go with his halo]]
** [[spoiler: [[TrueFinalBoss Chakravartin]] starts off with his Golden Spider form, then when using Mithra's special powers by possession, he obtains a humanoid form with 12 pairs of arms and a halo made of thousands of arms. Then he sheds the form to become an even more humanoid, silver colored Reaper-like being, which is known as his Creator form.]]
** The reining king of this, however, is Asura himself, he doesn't have just 3, not 4, not even ''5'', but [[spoiler: '''6''' different forms of power at his disposal]]. Counting them down in order from first seen to last seen:
*** First, his base form is when he's usually at his weakest, with his golden metal material that all combat ready Demigods have merely covers his hands like gauntlets.
*** Vajra form: His arms are completely covered in golden armor and his strength is increased to higher levels. This is Asura's most commonly seen form, and it's power is shown by him being able to fight multi-kilometer-sized Gohma in space with no effort.
*** Six-Armed Vajra Form: His other most commonly seen form, where he [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin gains four extra arms]]. His already incredible power is increased to new heights, allowing him to fight with planet sized enemies, including Gongen Wyzen and blow him up, and Gohma Vlitra's initial form with near ease. This form, combined with enough anger, also is what he uses to defeat Deus.
*** [[spoiler: Berserker Form: This is Asura's second strongest form in terms of raw power, but it's completely unstable and out of control in regular situations, as when he awakens to it, he has just been witness to the death of the poor girl who reminded him so much of Mithra as a result of Olga's [[MoralEventHorizon most despicable act]], and is [[UnstoppableRage just about out of his mind with rage]]. Asura gains massively huge Mantra arms, able to wipe out entire battalions of space ships with ease, and temporarily hold back the [[WaveMotionGun Brah]][[KillSat mastra]]'s powerful Mantra cannon with an energy beam attack and weaken it enough significantly.]]
*** [[spoiler: Wrath Form: The follow up of the above, after his Mantra arms were blown off. He's only ''slightly'' less powerful without them in this mode, as his anger makes this form stronger and faster overall without them, but this is when his body starts deteriorating the most, making it his weakest form by technicality when almost nearly at death.]]
*** [[spoiler: Mantra Form/Prajna Form: The pinnacle of Asura's power without the Mantra Reactor implant, given to him with help of Mithra's power to fight Vlitra. This form is when Asura's rage is at it's most concentrated, and unless extremely angered, it allows him to keep him from going into the previous 2 forms much easier and use their power with much more ease. It goes beyond even them, as Asura grows over '''1000''' Vajra arms from each side, which shrink down and turn Asura's arms into giant massive gauntlets, his power is increased a thousand fold of his previous forms. Also referred to as Prajna Asura in [[AllThereInTheManual Official Complete Works]]]]
*** [[spoiler: Mantra Reactor Asura: Something of a sub-super form, This is Asura after having the Karma Fortress's Mantra Reactor implanted inside him by Yasha's sacrifice. It allows him to channel as much power as he needs to and he no longer can turn into his Berserker or Wrath forms because his anger can no longer destroy his own body. It allows him to use his power in even stronger ways then ever, increasing all his abilities to levels never before seen, even in base mode. This allows him to defeat Chakravartin once and for all. His Mantra turns a rainbow color thanks to having all of the 8 Mantra types thanks to the reactor. This actually referred to as Mantra Asura in the Official complete works instead, with the above Mantra Asura being called Prajna Asura]]
*** [[spoiler: Asura The Destructor[=/=] Six Armed Mantra Asura: Asura's most powerful form in the entire game, allowing Asura to become on level with that of a true god. He grows to a size that literally dwarfs that of the planet of Gaea (The planet being barely as big as the center ring of his Mantra Form halo), and gains 4 extra Mantra Form style arms, and his skin turns grey with rainbow TronLines in his skin. His form has physical strength far beyond any form previously, punching through a planet thousands of times bigger then his own planet dwarfing size, and destroys entire rows of planets with ease, as well as stars with just energy blasts. He also has a Human sized form, which is shown in his final battle with Chakravartin, yet it's equally as powerful, and only get's stronger thanks to Asura's anger at Chakravartin.]]
* In ''VideoGame/AlteredBeast'', powerups made you successively more muscular, until you max out and gained your beast form and powers.
* Sol Badguy from ''GuiltyGear'' has "Dragon Install", which temporarily increases the power of his attacks at the cost of depleting health. This created a minor trend in the anime fighter community where people would call any super mode in games similar to ''GuiltyGear'' "[X] Install."
** Painwheel's SuperMode in ''VideoGame/{{Skullgirls}}'' is officially named "Hatred Install", probably as a nod to the above.
* ''VideoGame/BlazBlueChronoPhantasma'' has a new "Overdrive" mechanic which gives everyone a character-specific SuperMode when activated. For instance, Hazama gains his infamous health-draining ring, Taokaka [[DoppelgangerAttack gains a doppelganger who follows her]], Jin can freeze his opponents more, etc. Many moves which were {{Super Mode}}s in previous games (Ragna's Blood Kain and Bang's Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan) are now Overdrives as well.
* ''WorldOfWarcraft'' gives this to Demonology Warlocks in Wrath of the Lich King called Metamorphosis. This demonic form originally lasted for 30 seconds and gave the Warlock some unique moves, plus more armor and increased damage. With Mists of Pandaria, Metamorphosis was revamped. Players can now shift into their demon form as long as they have energy in their new Demonic Fury bar, plus grants them Nether Plating. Furthermore, Warlock skills are replaced with demon skills(Ex: Corruption becomes Bane of Doom)
** The Glyph of Demon Hunting gives Warlocks a Dark Apotheosis form, like a minor Demon form made for soloing content. In some cases, they can serve as off-tanks for Normal and sometimes Heroic Dungeons if the main tank croaks. Unlike Metamorphosis, Dark Apotheosis can stay in place till the player wants to disable it.
* ''VideoGame/PlayStationAllStarsBattleRoyale'''s transformation Level 3 Supers are meant to invoke this by letting the user kill instantly, like with the above-mentioned [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry Devil Trigger]], [[VideoGame/HeavenlySword Goddess-form]] and [[VideoGame/GodOfWar Kratos]] instead of Rage of the Gods/Titans/Sparta calls upon his powers from his time as the god of war while wielding the [[ForgedByTheGods Blade of Olympus]]. Others include [[VideoGame/JakAndDaxter Light Jak]], [[VideoGame/GravityRush Gravity Panther]], the [[VideoGame/TwistedMetal Sweet Bot]] and [[VideoGame/{{InFAMOUS}} The Beast]].
* ''{{Franchise/Pokemon}}'' introduces "Mega Evolutions" in ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY''. Not to be confused with the [[EvolutionPowerup usual evolution]] in the series, Mega Evolution is a temporary in-battle form that requires [[TransformationTrinket special items]] to unlock. Not all Pokemon can Mega-Evolve, though. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLY062owp8M This video]] shows the ones who can demonstrating their power. It's quite useful as it counts [[TransformationIsAFreeAction as a free action]] - activating after the Speed stat check for the turn, but out-prioritising everything except switching and [[BackStab Pursuit]] targeted against aforementioned switchouts - and can give some incredibly useful abilities.
* TheGuidedFateParadox allows your main character - a down-on-his-luck OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent who finds himself inexplicably promoted to God Almighty after winning the title in a raffle(!) - to temporarily go into 'God Mode' after killing enough enemies. Floating? Check. Badass-looking armor? Check. Screen-clearing super-attacks? Check. Complete invulnerability? Check. Highly limited duration which goes down even faster if you get hit or use attacks? ...check.
* OnePiecePirateWarriors 2 adds 'Style Mode' for all playable characters. What it actually does varies between characters - Luffy goes into Gear Second, Sanji [[ManOnFire catches on fire]], fighters with appropriate training activate Armor Haki, Logia-users transform fully into their element (making them immune to normal attacks), and so on. Regardless of the details, however, it always works in much the same way: You start glowing, NoSell enemy attacks, and access better, stronger combos which you deliver with increased attack-power and speed. It's always time-limited, but with the right skills equipped (and a bit of luck with finding [[HyperactiveMetabolism food-items]]), you can keep it up for a LONG time, laying waste to numerous bosses and hundreds of enemies...
** Better yet, you can bring along a Crew Member for support - and if you beat enough enemies while in Style Mode, you can end it by activating Crew Strike, where you tag in your chosen Crew Member and play as THEM for a while... in THEIR Style Mode.

* Dash of the Literature/WhateleyUniverse can use his Energizer power to make himself much, much faster and stronger. For ten minutes. And it takes him about ten minutes to crank himself up first. And he can only do it a couple times a day without completely exhausting himself.
* In the web serial Worm the hero Battery's powers work like this, by standing still and concentrating she powers up, giving her a boost to speed and a smaller boost to strength as well as limited electromagnetic powers, the longer she stands still for the more powerful / longer she can keep it up for.
* The Sonic fan animation ''WebAnimation/NazoUnleashed'' has massive use of this, from Super Sonic and Shadow, to giving the Big Bad Nazo a Perfect form to [[spoiler:Hyper Sonic and Shadow, who fuse to become Shadic, then Hyper Knuckles and Super Tails]].
* WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'s own Yang gains a super mode where her hair and attacks are enhanced with fire. It also seems to require a short charge up (via chain attacks) before it reaches its full effect, signified by her eyes glowing red. She can then go into HYPER mode when both angered and fully charged.
** This is [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] in her character song, "I Burn", which literally includes the words "I'm world class, and Super Saiyan now".

* In ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'', Aang can enter the "Avatar State", during which he acquires the combined warrior skills of his previous lives, turning him into [[PersonOfMassDestruction a god of destruction.]] The drawback is that if the Avatar is killed in this state, he [[DeaderThanDead will not reincarnate]] and will thus [[FinalDeath cease to exist]], which almost happened in the season 2 finale thanks to Azula. The only reason he survived being trapped in an iceberg for a century was because he was in the Avatar State the entire time. Aang is pretty much on auto-pilot in the Avatar State and will attack anything perceived as a threat with maximum force. Avatars who achieve willful control over the Avatar State through spiritual mastery and experience are considered "fully realized," and are usually nigh unstoppable. Fully realized Avatars have done things like stop erupting volcanoes, split a peninsula off from the mainland as an island, and create spirit seals that last for ten thousand years.
* Ben had various Ultimate Modes for his aliens thanks to the Ultimatrix in ''Ben10UltimateAlien''. The only known drawback was that the Ultimate forms developed personalities and thoughts of their own, which Azmuth eventually dealt with. Ben loses this power, however, when he receives a new Omnitrix and the Ultimatrix was, by WordOfGod, destroyed before ''Ben10Omniverse''.
* Happens regularly in the animated ComicStrip/{{Popeye}} shorts. Whenever Popeye eats some spinach, every fight he's losing in turns into a CurbStompBattle in his favor.
* The space dinosaurs of ''{{Dinosaucers}}'' could 'Dinovolve' and become big, strong primal versions of themselves-but not without intelligence like when the Tyrannos did it.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' episode ''[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E26TwilightsKingdomPart2 Twilight's Kingdom Part 2]]'', the ponies' Rainbow Power seems to function like this. Once the danger has passed, the Mane Six revert back to their normal forms.
** Similarly, in the finale of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks'', the Rainbooms get rainbowfied super modes on top of their anthropony transformations.
