In character design, there is the crucial question:

[[BoyishShortHair Short Hair]] or [[RapunzelHair Long Hair]]? Short implies that the character is practical, independent, and strong. For women, long hair means that [[LongHairIsFeminine she's feminine, beautiful, even regal]], but it may also be regarded as decorative or impractical. So, with these two opposing hair philosophies, will the creator choose the practicality and ease of a short cut, or the awesomeness of hair that goes ''fwish'' for dramatic effect?

You need never choose between the two again. A woman who has Short Hair with Tail has the spunk and practicality of a Short-haired Hottie with all the elegant drama of RapunzelHair. A man who has Short Hair with Tail has the stereotypical, short male haircut at the front ''but'' gets to be a long hair or LongHairedPrettyBoy at the same time.

Characters with this hairstyle simultaneously rock the short and the long styles--[[RuleOfCool they're just that awesome]]. Distinct from HimeCut in that hime cuts have mid-length side tresses to frame the face, and all long in back, while ShortHairWithTail is quite obviously a short style all around ''with'' a noticeable tail.

This is a character design trope, subtrope of AnimeHair. Convenient for accommodating NoFlowInCGI -- both the short hair and the long braid are easier to animate than long, flowing hair. See also TomboyishSidetails and RapunzelHair. Compare with AnimeHair, for the general likelihood of actually seeing these styles walking around, and HimeCut, when the short hair is only in front to frame the face.

[[folder: {{Anime}} & {{Manga}}]]
* Soi-Fon (the captain of Squad 2) in ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' has two. If ShortHairWithTail is any character indicator, the short cut says she can [[ActionGirl kick some serious butt with the rest of them]], and the long hair is in keeping with the dramatic, showy side of her personality and how girly she gets around [[LesYay Yoruichi]].
* ''MacrossFrontier'' has Ozma Lee, whose hair is short clipped and tousled all around with [[SamuraiPonytail a ponytail down his back]]. This man has no mullet--he has pure awesome growing from his scalp.
* ''TenchiMuyo'' has [[RichBitch Princess Ayeka]]. You'd hardly know she had the long hair without all that dramatic wind that keeps blowing. But she still has an adorable helmet-hair bob and some serious RapunzelHair long twin tails.
** Also Tenchi himself--cropped cut all around, rat tail in back. And he usually manages some butt kicking.
* From ''MahouSenseiNegima'' [[http://i30.tinypic.com/11u9av4.jpg there's Kaede]]: short part in a straight bob, [[RapunzelHair long part of her hair]] in a ponytail tied at the nape of her neck.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'': All three Sailor Starlights have this hairstyle. [[GenderBender Though]] [[AttractiveBentGender considering]] [[{{Bifauxnen}} their]] [[DudeLooksLikeALady rather]] [[{{Crossdresser}} particular]] [[WholesomeCrossdresser situation]] with varying canon, the male/female character implications of the hairstyle might change. Regardless of canon and gender confusion, they're all very pretty and they all kick butt.
* Makoto from ''Idaten Jump''.
* Asta, at least in the ''TrinityBlood'' anime. From the front, it looks like a short cut. [[http://www.spookhouse.net/angelynx/trinityblood/tb11-abel-asta-frame2.jpg From behind,]] it's about as long as her BadassLongcoat.
* The goddess Peorth from ''Manga/AhMyGoddess''--just another quality to add to her fan-favorite status.
* Micaiah Chevelle from ''NanohaVivid''.
* [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Ray/Rei]] from the original ''{{Beyblade}}''. [[http://images.wikia.com/beyblade/images/d/d2/RaySeason2.png Observe]].
* Possibly inverted with Laharl from ''VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness'', since his super-long tails are on top rather than on the underside.
* Mew Lettuce from ''TokyoMewMew'', in twin braids for everyday and in a wrapped tail as a Mew-Mew. You actually see her twin braids down in episode 6, and that was a ''lot'' [[http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g358/v_m_troper/mewlettuce.jpg of hair.]]
* Makimachi Misao from ''RurouniKenshin''.
* [[http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2711/katekyohitmanreborn2010.jpg 25 year old Mukuro]] from ''Manga/KatekyoHitmanReborn'' let his medium-short hair grow, and chose to keep his [[RapunzelHair looong]] hair in an equally long ponytail. [[http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs38/f/2008/354/7/2/Mukuro_TYL_Vongola_by_Zodclnrl.jpg Behold]] (note: fan coloring). He's also [[MasterOfIllusion undeniably]] [[SidekickExMachina badass]].
** Uni in the same series also notably has this kind of hairstyle.
* In ''SaintBeast'', Luca's hair looks like a normal short cut from the front but has a very long wrapped ponytail at the back.
* Hikaru in ''Manga/MagicKnightRayearth'' has short hair with a long thin braid. Lafarga from the same series has short blond hair and a long ponytail.
* Musubi from ''{{Sekirei}}'' has this.
* The new ''CodeGeass'' project, ''Boukoku No Akito'' (or ''Akito The Exiled'') features its titular [[TheProtagonist hero]], [[http://codegeass.wikia.com/wiki/File:15.jpg Akito Hyuuga]] (pictured at right), with this hairstyle (the tail in question being a braid).
* Komachi/Cure Mint from ''YesPrettyCure5'', a ShrinkingViolet and the BarrierWarrior of her team, subverts this [[BewareTheNiceOnes most of the time]].
* Yui Kusanagi from ''VisualNovel/KamigamiNoAsobi'' sports this style, with the long hair tied back. It is perhaps to suggest a samurai-like image, considering she practises iaido.
* Chifuyu Orimura from ''LightNovel/InfiniteStratos'' sports a variation in that she only ties her hair to resemble this hairstyle.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: ComicBooks]]
* Hopey and Maggie from ''ComicBook/LoveAndRockets'' have had rattails and variations thereof at different points in the series.
* [[http://www.progressiveboink.com/2012/4/21/2960757/robliefeld3 The 40 Worst Rob Liefeld Drawings]] describes Shatterstar's early look:
-->''"Oh mercy, I just realized that the guy has a semi-short haircut everywhere, but has a real long ponytail, and then ALSO has two long braids coming out of like the back of his neck somewhere. Can you imagine how hard you would elbow your friend if you saw a dude with three ponytails? You would elbow the shit out of them."''
[[/folder]]

[[folder: {{Film}}]]
* The Padawan cut from ''StarWars'' is cropped all around, except for one ''very'' long, thin braid.
* Some artwork ''{{Mulan}}'', which shows her in the outfit and hairstyle she fought [[BigBad Shan Yu]] in at the end of the film for some reason had her hairstyle drawn in a way so it now includes a ponytail.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: LiveActionTV]]
* In ''Series/BabylonFive'', the female cut for the Centauri could be considered this--shaved bald except for the long, long ponytail.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: VideoGames]]
* Yuna from ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2 Final Fantasy X-2]]'' has relatively short hair, except for a ''very'' long braid from the back underside that nearly reaches her feet. How she grew that much hair in two years or whether it's some sort of extension is unexplained.
* [[http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-01/ffta-marche.html Marche]] from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTacticsAdvance''.
* Grown-up Aile from ''MegaManZX Advent''.
* {{Pretty Boy}}s Yukimura and Nagamasa (and [[ButtMonkey Kanbe]]) from ''VideoGame/SengokuBasara'' all have this, supposedly so they could keep their long {{samurai}} hair while staying HotBlooded and manly.
* Firion and The Onion Knight in ''VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy''
* In ''ValkyrieProfileCovenantOfThePlume'', [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100131164915/valkyrieprofile/images/4/44/Valkyrie_profile_covenant_of_the_plume_art_3%282%29.jpg Cheripha]] has this.
* Zhong Hui from ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors''.
* [[http://www.zeldainformer.com/images/articles/Impa.jpg Impa]] in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword'' has very short hair, but her bangs on her right side make a long tail.
* ''VideoGame/EtrianOdyssey IV'' uses this for one of its female Swordsmen. In addition to wearing a bandana over a ponytail, her hair looks shorter in the front, but includes TomboyishSidetails. Notably, the other female Swordsman (who doubles as the class rep) just has a bob.
* Serah Farron from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'' has an odd variation, with the tail being an 80's-tastic side ponytail.
* Karst from ''VideoGame/GoldenSun: The Lost Age'' wears her hair short with TomboyishSidetails and a thin tail in the back.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: {{Webcomics}}]]
* Soli of ''Webcomic/TheMeek'' has this. She used to have long hair all around, but at some point she cut it.
* ''{{Homestuck}}'':
** The Handmaid: Neck-length hair, except for two bangs framing her face which reach almost to her feet.
** Later, Meenah is seen with two braid-thin tails that touch the floor behind her.
* In ''{{Drowtales}}'', Agneya'mukhi Balvhakara has the bangs and sides of a HimeCut, but this trope in back. (Seen [[http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?sid=8019 here]] in the last panel on the right)
[[/folder]]

[[folder: WesternAnimation]]
* One episode of ''KingOfTheHill'' has Bobby idolizing a garage-band punk rocker with a buzz cut and a rat-tail. His attempts to do the same doesn't take off.
* If baldness can be taken for "short cut", then Prince Zuko had one in the first season of ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender''.
* Crazy Stunts in ''WesternAnimation/SkysurferStrikeForce''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: RealLife]]
* Attempted with varying degrees of success and failure by mullets. Rarely do they reach RapunzelHair length with the long parts, rarely is the long hair badass, and rarely do mulleteers go for the all around short with a single long ponytail--but there are some occurrences.
* [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QIMZbtZqq0Y#t=323s A rare successful real-life example.]]
* Rat Tail and Duck Tail are also RealLife examples of attempts at this style.
** The former was especially popular in the mid-80s, worn by pop singers like Aimee Mann and the men in Tears For Fears.
* A traditional Manchu hairstyle forced on the Chinese during the Qing Dynasty involves having the head mostly shaved bald except for an area in the back of the head which is grown long and braided into a tail. It's called a "queue" - not to be confused with the thing you stand in to wait for something. [[EnforcedTrope The Manchus executed any Chinese who cut their queues or grew out the rest of their hair]].
