->'''Penny:''' Sheldon has a girlfriend?\\
'''Sheldon:''' She’s not my girlfriend.\\
'''Penny:''' How long has this been going on?\\
'''Leonard:''' Four months.\\
'''Sheldon:''' She’s not my girlfriend.\\
'''Penny:''' Are you telling me, for the past four months I have been asking you what’s new and you never thought to go with ''Sheldon has a girlfriend''??\\
'''Sheldon:''' She’s not my girlfriend.\\
'''Sheldon:''' All right, everyone pay attention. Yes, I have a friend named Amy Farrah Fowler. Yes, she is female. Yes, we communicate on a daily basis, but no, ''she is not my girlfriend''.
-->-- ''Series/TheBigBangTheory'', "The Robotic Manipulation"

Yes, she is. And if she isn't, she eventually will be. ResistanceIsFutile. [[TheoryOfNarrativeCausality Narrative Causality]] compels you.

A standard response in the face of an accusation that two characters are more than JustFriends. Usually said with an exclamation point--or ten--at the end, and emphasis on the "NOT", maybe accompanied by breaking something.

"He is not my boyfriend!" is another version, albeit not as common, probably in a 65/35% ratio. There are also instances when the two accused say it simultaneously.

Is it true? Technically, yes. {{Hilarity|Ensues}}, if not bloodshed, ensues, because:
#[[EveryoneCanSeeIt Nobody believes them anyway]].
# The speaker and subject are [[ObliviousToLove long overdue]] for a RelationshipUpgrade.
#The subject was under the opposite impression.

A common inversion, especially in the second case, is when the speaker is asked about the not girlfriend/boyfriend in question, and they [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial respond with the line, even though the accusation was never brought up in the first place]]. Alternately, the accusation ''is'' made, [[INeverSaidItWasPoison but not the name]], which the defendant then gives up. In either case, cue satisfied smirk by the asker.

The number of exclamation marks and how much the characters protest and try to convince people that they ''aren't'' together is usually proportionate to the amount of UnresolvedSexualTension between the characters in question. Presumably, characters who really ''are'' just friends wouldn't feel threatened by the accusation. For extra fun, try saying it about some characters who have BelligerentSexualTension.

Especially common in shows and on channels ("Teen" Nick goes crazy with this) where kids and/or preteens are the main audience. Quite interesting, as more often than not, most kids aren't ready for that kinda stuff yet, and therefore could use whatever interpretation comes their way. For some, the trope can be coupled with the fact that it allows for both a male and female protagonist in starring roles (thus reaching a wider audience) but is as far as either the {{Media Watch Dog}}s or writers will ever go in terms of illustrating romance and relationships in a series.

See also RelativeError, for when the pair involved are relatives of each other, and MistakenForRomance, for when the pair involved actually ''aren't'' a pair.

One of the stock phrases for {{Tsundere}}s (both genders), or one/both of a couple who are JustFriends.

[[IThoughtItMeant This does not result in]] TheNotLoveInterest.

Compare/contrast with StupidSexyFriend, wherein deciding they ''should'' just be friends is contrasted with the thoughts one can't get rid of of being more than friends.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/FairyTail'':
** Lucy has to deal with this trope a number of times. People have mistakenly hooked her up with Natsu, Gray, Loki/Leo, and Ren from Blue Pegasus.
** This occurs with Elfman and Evergreen as well during the S-Class Trial Arc.
** When they were younger, Gray would constantly follow Erza around and challenge her to fights. His peers teased him for this and asked if the real reason was because he was in love with her. He got embarrassed and denied it.
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** Edward Elric says this frequently about Winry Rockbell. When Ed calls Winry to get his automail repaired after a run-in with the homunculi and Brosh asks him if he's calling his girlfriend. Ed gets so incensed by this proposition that his yelling reopens his wounds. Later Ed has a spectacular SpitTake at Hawkeye's suggestion that he loves Winry, which nearly drowns poor Hayate. It also happens in the [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist 2003 anime]] after Edward passes the state alchemy exam and writes to Winry to tell her so; Nina says that "Winry is a pretty name" and asks if she is his girlfriend, at which point, he flips out to a comparable degree of his height BerserkButton.
** Winry insists to Rose that Ed is her childhood friend, despite the fact that she has already admitted to herself that she is in love with him.
* ''Manga/InuYasha'':
** It has Inuyasha calling Kagome "shard detector" in early chapters/episodes to deny any relationship with the reincarnation of his old girlfriend. She resents it every time, at first because she's a person, not just a detector, and later because of the BelligerentSexualTension between them. The most famous instance of this is probably Miroku's entry episode (episode 16, "Mystical Hand of the Amorous Monk, Miroku!") near the end, where he denies a relationship... with LuminescentBlush and stuttering.
** Even before that, Inuyasha has the famous "We're ''not'' lovers" exchange with Kagome in the Thunder brothers arc.
** Kagome also has several "He is not my boyfriend" moments, including one where her friends ask her about her boyfriend, and she replies that they are not together and were "thrown together by a cruel twist of fate." This confuses them greatly as they were referring to Houjo.
* ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'':
** Setsuna is always saying this regarding her [[BodyguardCrush relationship]] with Konoka, especially after their impromptu NotADate in the manga. Everyone else [[EveryoneCanSeeIt just smiles]].
** [[{{Tsundere}} Asuna]] denies that she has feelings for [[ChickMagnet Negi]]. Nobody ([[EveryoneCanSeeIt including people who have known her for weeks or even less]]) buys that.
* The standard response for Naru concerning Keitaro in ''Manga/LoveHina'', only she goes further by [[{{Tsundere}} rattling off his bad qualities defensively]]. She even does this once by reflex [[spoiler: after they're engaged.]]
* In ''Manga/{{Jin}}'', when Ryoma suggests that there's something between Jin and Saki, the doctor freaks out and claims vehemently that it's nothing. He's mostly concerned with the fact that he's 36 and she's 16.
* Most of the romantic comedy in ''Manga/DotHackLegendOfTheTwilight'' revolves around Shugo's and Rena's attraction to each other--and their efforts to deny it--in the first half of the series (they stop being embarrassed about in the second half).
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'': The simultaneous version. Asuka starts chewing out Shinji for not bringing their lunches, while he tries to get his side in. Toji tosses off a remark that they're arguing LikeAnOldMarriedCouple. Cue double LuminescentBlush (they HAD kissed not many days earlier), then simultaneous denial in perfect stereo.
* A similar version is executed in ''Anime/RahXephon'' with Ayato and Meg, the Shinji-Asuka equivalents of the show, down to the simultaneous blushing shout. In this case however, their statement is true: Meg does have a crush on Ayato but he's interested in Haruka.
* The title character from ''Anime/NadiaTheSecretOfBlueWater'' obviously has feelings for Jean, but she declares otherwise to both Grandis and Marie when both call her out about it. (Naturally, since she has never known anything about love before, she does not know how to acknowledge it or express herself.)
* ''LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya'':
** A large portion of their fellow students assume that Haruhi and Kyon are dating; Kyon's friend Taniguchi in particular is completely convinced of this, no matter how often Kyon says otherwise. Also, after Kyon and Nagato [[spoiler:finally defeat Ryoko the GirlWithPsychoWeapon]], Taniguchi finds Yuki lying against Kyon while holding onto his arms, and now Taniguchi firmly believes that Kyon had sex with Yuki in the classroom... Kyon's heated (for him) over-explanation doesn't help. His friend points out that for both [[DeadpanSnarker Kyon]] ''and'' [[TheStoic Yuki]] to show that much emotion over anything is very suspicious. Which is absolutely correct.
** After Haruhi and Yuki, there is an ''{{inverted|Trope}}'' case in the 7th novel with [[spoiler: Mikuru and Kyon. Kyon is asked if Mikuru is his girlfriend by some (apparently) random guy. Kyon actually replies that she ''is'' his girlfriend, to make the situation not any more awkward.]]
** Kyon seems to have a knack for this trope. The 9th novel mentions that [[spoiler:people apparently thought his strange friendship with Sasaki meant that she was his girlfriend]].
* ''WhenTheyCry'' Anime-only arc Musubienishi-hen has this happen to Mion and Keiichi. Takano comments that they look good together, and Mion vehemently denies it.
** Keiichi, however, does not, and mumbles that he "wouldn't mind being Mion's boyfriend". After a pause, he stutters that it was a joke.
* Chiaki from ''Manga/NodameCantabile'' keeps denying vehemently that Nodame is his girlfriend--even though he spends massive amounts of time with her, mostly at his own place. Things don't get any clearer when he decides to bring her to see his father, which [[spoiler:does lead to a temporary break-up though]].
** Not to mention hugging her a few times, kissing her a couple of times, asking her to come to Paris with him, letting her stay in his room when he's not around, letting her share a bed with him... the man is stubborn.
* Second episode of ''Anime/DigimonSavers'', as Masaru and Yoshino are arguing:
-->'''Chika:''' Stop arguing LikeAnOldMarriedCouple.\\
'''Masaru & Yoshino:''' WHO ARE YOU CALLING A COUPLE!?
* Souichi from ''Manga/TheTyrantFallsInLove'' reacts violently when, after having sex, Morinaga suggests that they are "lovers" and later on, "sex friends" (his response to the latter is punctuated by dumping hot coffee on Morinaga's head). All this leaves poor Morinaga wondering just what kind of relationship they ''do'' have.
* ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'':
** The anime did this a few times with Ash being mistaken for being Misty's boyfriend, especially in the second movie.
** One rather serious time was when James and Jesse sprung their trap on the two (while they were riding on a blimp), but then, realizing Brock wasn't there, mistook them for lovebirds on a date. Of course, they both vehemently denied it and got angry... And then everyone realized [[WhoIsDriving no-one was piloting the blimp.]] It didn't end well.
** Misty was also asked if ''Tracey'' was her boyfriend. Naturally, she denied it.
** Also, Drew and May invoked this trope as well, when Harley directly asked them if they were dating.
** And in one episode, a couple accused both Ash and May ''and'' Jesse and James of being couples. Hilariously, it is during a FeudEpisode between boys and girls, and the inquirers believe their bickering is a sign of their closeness.
* ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' toys with this in the Emerald arc. We may never know if Ruby actually forgot, refuses to admit his feelings in public, or secretly likes the reaction, but his feigned amnesia[[spoiler: in regards to his confession to Sapphire at the end of the R/S arc]] drives Sapphire up a wall so goddamn hard.
* Makoto and Sekai in ''VisualNovel/SchoolDays'' do this constantly, even after [[spoiler: they start sleeping together]].
* Rina Touin from ''Manga/MermaidMelodyPichiPichiPitch'' starts out saying this about Masahiro Hamasaki, especially in the manga (his anime incarnation gets off a little lighter, mostly because he's introduced at about the same time as Nagisa and he and Hanon need all the help they can get).
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'': Ranma and Akane repeatedly deny that they share romantic interest. In fact, whenever someone mentions [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage them being engaged,]] they immediately try to explain that it was their parents' choice, not their own choice. Sometimes, however, when some other man is after Akane, Ranma doesn't deny it. He actually brings it up and says that she's his fiancée. It's one of his CrazyJealousGuy habits.
* Creator/RumikoTakahashi [[BelligerentSexualTension seems to like this trope]], as it appears in ''Manga/MaisonIkkoku'' and ''Manga/InuYasha'' as well.
* Used twice in ''Manga/{{Naruto}}''. First, with [[CoolBigSis Kurenai-sensei]] and [[FormerTeenRebel Asuma-sensei]] [[spoiler: (turns out later they ''were'' dating and she's pregnant with his baby... too bad he's dead)]] and later with [[ObfuscatingStupidity Shikamaru]] and [[LadyOfWar Temari]] [[spoiler: (although they weren't dating at the time, they hooked up at some point and were shown as married with a kid in chapter 700.)]]
* ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'':
** [[MoeAnthropomorphism Sweden calls his partner Finland his wife]], and so do [[FourthWallMailSlot fans]]. Finland denies it every time, partly because he's [[TheBigGuy scared of Sweden]].
** Another variation: Japan had sex with his close friend Greece (more exactly, Greece learns that Japan's sex life is rather "non active" and gives him a "private lesson" to help him) and is in denial about that too. [[AllJustADream "It was just a dream!]] [[Funny/AxisPowersHetalia A dream! A DREAAAAAAM!"]]
*** And in another strip, while holding a practice conversation in Japanese with Greece, Greece asks him who "Nekojiro" [aka the pretend name Japan assumes for himself in that conversation] gets along with. Japan replies, "His friend, Nekokichi-san." Greece smiles and asks if ''he's'' "Nekokichi-san", which causes Japan to blush and stammer for a bit before replying with "No comment." Take from ''that'' what you will.
** And England gets it played straight in a certain drama CD when France calls an Anglo-American argument everyone was eavesdropping on a "lover's spat" which he of course denies.
** Switzerland would also like to remind you that he and Austria had never, ever, ''ever'' been HeterosexualLifePartners.
* ''[[Anime/{{Bakugan}} Bakugan Battle Brawlers]]'' gets a few of these. [[TheHero Dan]] and [[{{Tsundere}} Runo]] have the majority of these, more commonly in season 1, but [[TheChick Julie]] recently gave the "He is ''not'' my boyfriend!" line regarding [[UnluckyChildhoodFriend Billy]]. This prompted a response of, "Now she's breaking up with me!" from Billy, who had an obvious crush on Julie from the very beginning. This was all of about a minute before [[ChildhoodFriendRomance things changed]].
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'':
** Averted in the manga. After Rukia's habit of dragging Ichigo off to hunt hollows starts rumours flying around the school (actually, Keigo starts them to cause trouble but Ichigo never finds this out), the girls end up asking Rukia (to her SpitTake surprise) if there's anything going on and Rukia confirms there isn't. That is the end of it and this trope never comes into play. WordOfGod confirmed he wasn't interested in writing a romance story and views Ichigo and Rukia's relationship as [[PlatonicLifePartners close but not romantic]].
** This trope is played straight in the anime, however, as the animators rewrote this scene to include rainbows and turn it into a JustFriends scene complete with all the romantic undercurrent this trope evokes. The animators have written this trope for Ichigo and Rukia into the anime on as many occasions as they can get away with, usually in filler scenes where they will use filler characters in an EveryoneCanSeeIt manner or even rewrite canon characters (such as Nel) in a ClingyJealousGirl way to imply there's something going on between Ichigo and Rukia. None of it is based on anything from the manga, however.
** In ''[[Anime/BleachMemoriesOfNobody Memories of Nobody]]'', Ichigo is forced to buy Senna a new ribbon after she accidentally steals one. The shopper keeper asks if it's a present for his girlfriend, triggering this trope.
* Camie the mermaid in ''Manga/OnePiece'' does a variation of this trope when asked if she was Hachi's girlfriend, and her blushing and nervous reply neatly confirms her love for him, which had been strongly implied ever since his cover arc.
* Wanna see a funny face? Ask ''Manga/{{Eyeshield 21}}'''s {{Mam|aBear}}ori if [[MagnificentBastard Hiruma]] is her boyfriend. [[spoiler: By the end of the series, she's practically using the SubordinateExcuse.]]
* [[{{Tsundere}} Taiga]] and Ryuji of ''LightNovel/{{Toradora}}'' are a shining example of this. Taiga goes on a massive parade of destruction upon finding out that the whole class was gossiping about them. It doesn't help that Taiga hangs out at Ryuji's house and he makes her Bentou every day, and they go to and from school together and they eat dinner together just about every day.
* [[NiceGirl Nagisa]] and [[DeadpanSnarker Tomoya]] from ''VisualNovel/{{Clannad}}'' anime, before they went on and became the OfficialCouple. And even then, the denial is relatively minimal. When directly confronted with the accusation that she and Tomoya might be dating, Nagisa hastily looks away with a nervous blush and replies with what basically boils down to, "May we talk about something else, please?" In the Visual Novel, Nagisa and Tomoya are more open about their relationship, although Tomoya still tries to hide it from Sunohara out of embarrassment ([[EveryoneCanSeeIt it doesn't work]]).
* Hilariously subverted in BakaAndTestSummonTheBeasts. EmotionlessGirl ClingyJealousGirl Shouko denies it when someone accuses Yuuji to be her boyfriend... because to her, Yuuji is her ''husband.''
* [[TheStoic Fudo Yusei]] of ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'' pulls this off after [[spoiler: Aki's dad gets Yusei to help Aki after her duel with Misty. Martha jokes Yusei for crushing on Aki--a fact that Yusei vehemently denies.]]
** Was used before in ''[[Anime/YuGiOh Duel Monsters]]'', when Mai saw Yugi and Téa hanging out (before the Battle City is announced) and asks if they are dating (technically they kind of ''were'' on a date, but Téa still points vehemently that they're just ''friends'').
** Happens early in ''Anime/YuGiOhArcV'' to Yuya and Yuzu. Sora asks Yuzu to get Yuya to mentor him, saying he'd do it if his "girlfriend" asked him to. They both deny it(with Yuzu in particular blushing), but Yuya goes a step further by saying he wouldn't be with a "rude girl" like her. Cue paper fan smack from Yuzu.
* Said by Kousaka from ''Manga/{{Genshiken}}'', [[CloudCuckooLander in his usual flippant way]]. His "not girlfriend" tries to change this any way she can, with little success. This doesn't last very long (all of three chapters, in fact), as the GenreSavvy Genshiken tell him to just admit it. He does, and thereafter goes from denying it to just not making a big deal out of it.
* ''Manga/GunslingerGirl''. Said by Triela to Maria Machiavelli, when the latter hints that Triela is in love with her [[TheHandler handler]] Hillshire. The usual awkwardness is absent as Triela makes it clear that even if she was in love, the fratello relationship doesn't work that way. [[CreatorsPet At least it's not supposed to]].
* ''Manga/DearS'': In this case, Ren '''is not''' Kousaka's slave.
* ''Manga/SkipBeat'' opens with Sho stating this about Kyoko, his [[UnluckyChildhoodFriend childhood friend]] [[LikeBrotherAndSister whom his parents raised]], whom he was essentially using as a maid. Of course, [[spoiler: after he says it enough times and she [[BeautifulAllAlong successfully enters show business]], he realizes that it's not true--by which time she has stopped seeking his affections and is [[ObliviousToLove completely oblivious to the fact that he is now actually seeking hers]].]] Sho and Kyoko continue to deny that they are or ever have been dating, even after [[spoiler: he states that she ''belongs to him'' and attempts to drive off his romantic rivals.]]
* A variation of this is found in ''LightNovel/FullMetalPanic'' with Sōsuke about Kaname. During a dance party on the ''Tuatha De Dannan'', Kurz mentions to Sōsuke that Kaname is very pretty, cute, and has a nice sense of style. ''Any'' man would fall for her in an instant. Sōsuke coldly and cuttingly replies that he wouldn't know, since he isn't interested. This is ''very'' interesting, considering that this might be one of the few instances where Sōsuke acts like a {{Tsundere}} (breaking from his usual [[TheStoic stoic]] manner).
** And likewise with Kaname--as a {{Tsundere}} you'd think she'd blow her stack when asked this question, but she usually acts embarrassed instead. Mind you their formal relationship (with Sōsuke as her secret bodyguard) isn't something she can explain to people either.
* Yuko from ''Manga/XxxHolic'' displays this kind of attitude in relation to her not-boyfriend Clow, and she tends to get rather vindictive should someone suggest she had some kind of relationship with the guy.
* Kanna and Motoki from ''Manga/KoeDeOshigoto'' have this reaction to the suggestion that they're a couple, with the same {{Speech Bubble|s}}, no less.
* ''Manga/TriGun''. When a couple bodyguards assume she's fighting with her "boyfriend", the Broom Boy (a.k.a. Vash the Stampede), Meryl Stryfe is very quick to inform them that not only is he ''not'' her boyfriend, but she doesn't even like him! Whatever she has to tell herself to get through the job.
* Often said by Yusuke in ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' about Keiko.
* ''Manga/NanaToKaoru'' does this with both Nana and Kaoru ''[[http://www.mangatoshokan.com/read/Nana-to-Kaoru/Quicker/32/9 simultaneously.]]''
* In ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}'', Fukuda volunteers to help Aoki with her manga illustrations, but is keen to make it clear to his editor, who asks why he is helping a rival mangaka, that he has no interest in her. It ultimately turns out that [[spoiler:he really doesn't have any apparent feelings for her, since she ends up with Hiramaru without him being at all displeased about it]], and it proves his commitment to "Team Fukuda" changing Jump.
-->'''Fukuda:''' And just for the record, I don't have feelings for her or anything. I actually kind of hate her.\\
'''Yujiro:''' You don't act like you hate her.
* Miu of ''Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple'' complains loudly whenever anyone calls the title character her boyfriend.
-->'''Miu:''' He's not my boyfriend! He's more like a little brother, or even a dog, you know like a stray dog you bring home because you feel sorry for it?\\
'''Kasara:''' Hey, aren't you taking that a little too far?
* ''LightNovel/{{Oreimo}}''
** Spelled out by Kyousuke regarding Manami in episode 6. His friend Akagi calls him out on the seeming hypocrisy of his explanation.
--->'''Akagi:''' So basically she's nothing more than a childhood friend to you, you're not going out with her, you have no feelings for her, but you won't allow other guys to make a move on her?\\
'''Kyousuke:''' Yeah, so?\\
'''Akagi:''' ''[sighs]''
** The original novel, however, goes on with this PlatonicLifePartners-ish excuse he makes to the reader when he feels his phrase sounded like he was in denial:
--->''Well, the answer was my honest. I just don't think there is a sharp-eyed guy that could see the appeal behind Manami's homeliness, but if he does appear, I'm going to defend her with all I have. Got it? It's in her company I can relax the most, even with nothing romantic about that. I won't give in to anyone who'd try and take that away from me.''
* In ''Manga/LuckyStar'' Most of the times Misao asks Kagami about Konata.
* In ''Anime/DarkerThanBlack: Shikkoku no Hana'' [[HeroAntagonist Misaki Kirihara]] was teased by a friend about her little obsession:
-->'''Kanami:''' ''[[[CheshireCatGrin grinning]]]'' [[ArmorPiercingQuestion Is it, by any chance]], that you don't want to follow ''Contractors'', but a ''[[DatingCatwoman certain man]]''?\\
'''Misaki:''' ''[turning to her, frowning, [[LuminescentBlush blushing]], sweating and screaming]'' Wha--that's not...\\
'''Kanami:''' ''[cheerful]'' Oh, I knew it! Your dear BK-201. ''Your panicking confirmation.''
* ''LightNovel/SpiceAndWolf'' has several instances of Lawrence calmly explaining to others that he and Holo aren't in that sort of relationship. At some point along the way, it starts becoming something of a lie. The series also inverts it when Lawrence tells other people they meet that Holo is his wife (an easy explanation as to why a young woman would be travelling alone with him), which is, naturally, untrue.
* In ''LightNovel/{{Durarara}}'' people generally assume that Mikado and Anri are dating. When they explain that they aren't, the typical reaction is usually, "Really? ...sweet, I have a shot at her, then!" Note: [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove They do not]].
** Aoba also says this to his [[spoiler:Blue Square members]] regarding Mairu and Kururi. Turns out it's rather tough to explain away [[spoiler:that they both kissed him]].
* Aria and Kinji of ''LightNovel/AriaTheScarletAmmo'' say that about each other several times.
* Fujimura from ''Manga/FujimuraKunMates'' insists that he and [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Eri]] are just friends. But he never completely rejects her constant advances.
* In the ending of ''Manga/MuhyoAndRoji'', Busujima tells Imai that her "boyfriend" Roji [[spoiler:got back together with Muhyo despite failing the advancement test]], prompting her to get angry at the use of the term.
* In ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico'', Akito repeatedly denies that Yurika is his girlfriend or that he's even interested in her. She refuses to believe that however, much to his chagrin.
* Shouma and Ringo from ''Anime/MawaruPenguindrum'' go through several rounds of saying this about the other.
* Gohan towards Videl in ''Anime/DragonBallZ''. He continually denies that anything is going on between him and Videl, even when EveryoneCanSeeIt.
* ''Manga/FruitsBasket'':
** Kyo gets pissed when any of his family teasingly suggests that he has a crush on Tohru. It's turned on its head at the end of the series, when some classmates notice the two being clingy to each other. When they ask as a joke if the two are now dating, Kyo matter-of-factly states that yes, they are.
** A rather funny variant happens at one point, when a girl tries to confess her love for Kyo, only for him to brush him off. Uotani makes a snarky comment, leading to the girl somehow concluding that ''Uotani'' is the girl he's in love with. Since they don't exactly get along, they don't take to this theory well.
* In ''Manga/{{Kochikame}}'', Komachi Ono's parents mistakenly believe that their daughter and Kankichi Ryotsu are a couple, despite her constantly trying to tell them otherwise. They also take the two's constant bickering and fighting as their cover for flirting.
* In ''LightNovel/LoveChunibyoAndOtherDelusions'' basically most of the interactions between Shinka and Kumin, regarding Dekomori in the movie and the 2nd Season.
* Taken a step further in ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' when Kiyoh assumes that Gimmy and Darry [[IsThatCuteKidYours are two kids that]] [[BelligerentSexualTension Kamina and Yoko]] had together.
--> '''Kiyoh:''' Yoko! When did you have children? Don't tell me you and Kamina--?!\\
'''Yoko:''' As if that'd happen!
* In ''Manga/RaveMaster'', Haru and Elie do this a lot, starting when Haru's father asks if they are together. They finally admit their feelings near the end of the story.
-->'''Gale Glory''': Ha ha! You got yourself quite a catch there, son. Nice rack too.\\
'''Haru Glory''': I told you... it's not like that.
* [[BelligerentSexualTension Tomoe and Nanami]] do this a lot in ''Manga/KamisamaKiss.'' Though by chapter 38 of the manga Nanami privately admits to herself that she hopes to change that.
* In ''Manga/DetectiveConan'', Ran gets very flustered when her friend teases her about being Shinichi's girlfriend. Interestingly, this is averted at two points in the manga. The first is when Conan teasingly asks her if Shinichi is the guy she's interested in only to be surprised when she freely admits that he is. The second is during a later case, when a woman asks Ran if she has a sweetheart (or, depending on you translate it, a lover), to which Ran replies, "I do have a person I like! [...] He's really smart and he's good at soccer. He's ready to help at any time. He's really cool... He's even a better detective than Dad!"
* In ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'', Ian at one point refers to Eren as Mikasa's boyfriend. She blushes and denies it.
* Kyouhei and ocassionaly Sunako from Manga/TheWallflower say this when other characters infer that they have a romantic relationship. The belligerant sexual tension between the two and the quite obvious fact that the two are the hero and heroine in a romantic comedy make such claims baseless.
* ''Franchise/KagerouProject'':
** During Chapter 18 of the manga, Hiyori asks Momo about her 'boyfriend' Shintaro. Being brother and sister, the latter two blurt out this trope in mutual disgust.
** When Kano presses Ayano about Shintaro, she insists vehemently that there's nothing there. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt The rest of the cast and fandom disagree.]]
* This was Arima's response to his mother in ''Manga/HighSchoolNinjaGirlOtonashiSan'' when she said that Otonashi-san was no good for her son (since she wasn't rich). However, he said that if he did fall in love with her, it's none of his mothers business.
* Emi from ''LightNovel/TheDevilIsAPartTimer'' is always assumed to be Maou's jealous ex by those who don't know that the two of them are actually a hero and demon lord from another world (and even by someone who actually ''does'' know, in the fourth light novel). The fact that she blushes while denying these accusations does not help her case.
* Anime/SamuraiFlamenco: Mari assumes that [[HoYay Goto and Masayoshi]] are a couple. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt Twice]]. Goto denies it both times.
* ''Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam'' has the Argama crew thinking that Kamille and Fa are a couple and termed their quarreling as a means of [[BelligerentSexualTension "recreation"]].
* This is done hilariously in ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam00'' Season 2 where Mileina asked Setsuna and Marina if they're lovers, the two answered simultaneously that they're not in a very flat expression. Then when Mileina asked Allelujah and Marie/Soma the same question, all she got is a LuminescentBlush from both of them, causing her to {{squee}} in delight.
* ''Manga/KingdomHeartsII'': At separate points, Sora is referred to as Kairi's boyfriend and Kairi is referred to as Sora's girlfriend. Both deny it, but it's very clear that they are romantically interested in each other.
* ''Manga/DogsBulletAndCarnage'' have a double example of this. When Haine and Magato first met each other, both immediately assumed that the other is Naoto's boyfriend. Naoto is not amused.

* Creator/MitchHedberg: "I don't have a girlfriend, I just know a girl who would get really angry if she heard me say that."

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* A running gag involving [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica Steve Rogers]] and [[ComicBook/{{Agent 13}} Sharon Carter]] during the Creator/MarkWaid run on Captain America. Played with in that they used to date and have a very strained relationship at present.
* In the [[ComicBook/MegaMan Mega Man]] comics, Vector Woman frequently teases Protoman and Quake Woman about their "relationship".
* ''Comicbook/YTheLastMan'': Yorick frequently has to inform people that his bodyguard Agent 355 is not his girlfriend. Ironically 355 often pretends Yorick is her transsexual girlfriend in order to hide that he's the last man on Earth.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster'' comics from the ''ComicBook/NintendoComicsSystem'', Princess Lana acknowledges to Samus Aran that Kevin is Not Her Boyfriend. The result is your classic BettyAndVeronica LoveTriangle.
* Interestingly enough, [[WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond Terry]] drops this quote verbatim in the ''[[ComicBook/BatmanBeyond Hush Beyond]]'' comic when Bruce calls Max his girlfriend. It appears to be a mix of ShipTease and EveryoneCanSeeIt, but PlayedForLaughs rather than romantic tension.
* In ''ComicBook/PocketGod'', Sun tells Toola that Ooga's not her boyfriend when she asks about their relationship.
* In ''ComicBook/{{Minimonsters}}'', many people (mostly Victor) teases Frank about his not-so secret crush on Henrietta, and that makes Frank blushing and shout desperately that she's not his girlfriend.

[[folder:Comic Strips]]
* ''ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}}'': Linus is constantly telling Sally, "I'm not your sweet babboo!" In this case, HE means it, but SHE doesn't. The phrase became so [[MemeticMutation popular]] that there's even a strip compilation book entitled ''I'm Not Your Sweet Babboo!''

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/ACrownOfStars'': At the beginning of the story Asuka denied Shinji was her boyfriend and vice versa. One of the reasons is they did not know where they stood with each other and the only thing they were certain about is they did not want to remain apart. Other of the reasons is they were in denial. Later they got together--after a fashion--but Asuka was unsure about her own feelings for a while, so she denied it until her doubts disappeared.
** In chapter 30:
--->'''Ching''': No, I didn't peek in the window and see you making out with your boyfriend\\
'''Asuka''': He is not my boyfriend! I mean… we haven't talked about it… I don't know
* ''Fanfic/AdviceAndTrust'': Asuka constantly denied that Shinji was her boyfriend before getting together. Ironically, she hates having to put up this act all the time in order to keep her relationship secret after she and Shinji became a couple.

* When Hermione is forcing Draco to take back his insults in ''Theatre/AVeryPotterMusical'', Ron chimes in with this:

** Asuka several times insisted there was nothing between her and Shinji, he was just a friend and she was not his girlfriend and will definitely not be his wife. Nobody was convinced.
** In chapter 4:
--->'''Kaji''': ''(in front of Asuka)'' And why not talk about the future, Asuka? Or should I say Ikari Asuka Langley?\\
''Asuka turns a vivid shade of red while Shinji tries to hide himself under the table.''\\
'''Asuka''': Kaji-san, please understand that there's nothing between me and stupid Shinji, okay?\\
''Everyone is grinning and staring at them, not really convinced by Asuka's words.''
* ''Fanfic/ChildrenOfAnElderGod'': In chapter 6 Asuka claimed she wrapped her arm around Shinji's earlier because she was trying to make Kaji jealous and she did not like her fellow pilot. Of course, everyone disregarded her claims.
* ''Manga/{{Evangelion 303}}'': In chapter 5 Asuka spent a looong time berating Shinji, complaining about that idiot not calling her, not noticing that she was worried about him and making excuses for staying in his house and sleeping in his home. [[http://eva303.smackjeeves.com/comics/1046811/029/ Jessika asked her if “idiot” was German for “boyfriend”]]. Asuka’s answer was as angry as predictable:
-->'''Asuka''': WOULD YOU SHUT UP?

* In the ''VisualNovel/MuvLuvAlternative''[=/=]''VideoGame/ArmoredCore'' crossover ''FanFic/ProjectIgnition'', this is common enough with Adler and Selene, seeing everyone sees them as a couple. However, pressing the issue is dangerous as it appears to be one of [[AntiHero Adler's]] {{Berserk Button}}s. Sort of, because usually pressing his BerserkButton actually causes violence--in this case, it's just yelling.
* In ''[[FanFic/AGunToLovesHead A Gun to Love's Head]]'' despite the fact that Light and L insist that they aren't lovers Mello refuses to believe them [[spoiler: until it becomes true]].

** Subverted when a dream-interpreting fortuneteller assumes Adam is Kira's boyfriend ([[ItMakesSenseInContext mostly because Kira was sitting on Adam's lap at the time]]). Since they aren't even remotely a couple (dating other people, vast age difference, barely know each other), they're rather confused by the assumption.

Akio says that he and Miho "spent some time working on some organizational stuff for the team," which is only ''part'' of what they did. Senmonka then decides to ask if they did anything else, making Akio want to hit him, but Akio inwardly concedes that the entire arrangement isn't so bad.
** Similarly, Tsubasa points out that Miho must be keeping Akio busy, but Akio points out that [[spoiler:because of Miho's aforementioned injury]], she has needed a lot of help. [[spoiler: Maria's actually talking about piano and drums jam sessions, not sex.]]
* ''FanFic/DoctorWhoovesTheSeries'' has the [[ChickMagnet Doctor]] and Twilight, his companion. Or, shall we say, more than companion?

* ''Fanfic/TheSecondTry'' provides the next examples:
** In order to keep the {{Masquerade}}, Asuka is forced to protest that Shinji isn't her boyfriend whenever someone suggests that she likes him, even though [[SecretRelationship they got married]] several years ago -[[PeggySue from their perspective]]-.[[note]]No one ever brings up the fact that her claims are MetaphoricallyTrue.[[/note]]
** According Misato, she and Kaji haven't got back together. And they are NOT dating. They are merely hanging out together. And having sex. But he's not her boyfriend.
* Subverted in ''Fanfic/NeonGenesisEvangelionGenocide''. When Asuka asks Shinji if he's dating Rei, he denies it, knowing that the relationship he has with Rei is both something ''else'' and more than a little complicated by the fact that she died and came back to life as another person. He also realizes that these reasons are far too complicated to explain to Asuka, so he settles for telling her that Rei simply isn't interested.

* In ''Disney/{{Hercules}},'' [[DatingCatwoman Megara]]'s main song, "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_bEWXs_FX4 I Won't Say I'm in Love]]," is about [[GreekChorus the Muses]] trying to get her to admit she's fallen for [[TheHero Hercules]].
* ''Disney/TreasurePlanet'': Doppler reacts this way when BEN thinks he and Amelia are a couple because he's carrying her. It's said with less denial and more tenderness than usually found in other examples, but that's because the film is hinting at their growing fondness for each other.
-->'''Ben:''' Awww, isn't that sweet? I find old-fashioned romance so touching, don't you? How about drinks for the happy couple?\\
'''Doppler:''' Ooo, uh--no. Thank you. We don't drink, and, uh--and, uh, we're not a couple.
* In the ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'' song "Fixer Upper," Kristoff's "family" of trolls immediately assume that [[Franchise/DisneyPrincess Anna]] is Kristoff's girlfriend when they meet her (after all, she's the first girl he's ever "brought home") and continue blatantly [[ShipperOnDeck shipping them in song]]. Though they do falter a ''bit'' at hearing Anna is engaged to Hans, they quickly get over it and even try to marry Anna and Kristoff on the spot anyway. They actually manage to get to the vows part before the accidental participants stop them.
--> '''Kristoff:''' ''Enough!'' She is engaged to ''someone else'', okay?!\\
'''Troll #1:''' So she's a bit of a fixer upper.\\

* ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheKillingJoke''. On encountering Batgirl again, Paris Franz wants to know where her "overbearing boyfriend" (Batman) is. Batgirl responds with this trope, so it's no surprise to the GenreSavvy that it foreshadows a later Batman/Batgirl RelationshipUpgrade.

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/ThatThingYouDo'': A variation. James Mattingly goes nonlinear when he sees the "Careful girls! He's engaged!" during their big TV debut. (It was a reference to the "Sorry girls! He's married!" caption during The Ed Sullivan Show performance by Music/TheBeatles.)

* ''Film/PeeWeesBigAdventure'': Pee-Wee is constantly having to reiterate that Dottie is not his girlfriend. It's a variation on the trope, however, because the only person who seems to think that this is the case is Dottie herself.

Even though Owen is not her boyfriend (their first date was a disaster, so they split up before the movie) Claire just smiles at the thought instead of making a vehement denial. They've already shared a BigDamnKiss, after all.

* In ''Literature/ABrothersPrice'', in a rather serious situation, [[spoiler: Cira insists]] that Jerin is not her boyfriend, and she is not interested in him at all. This is important, because [[spoiler: the villains want to make a show of raping Jerin, with her ForcedToWatch. She takes the fun out of it]] by claiming she's lesbian. She's actually rather attracted to Jerin, [[spoiler: who, unbeknownst to him, is engaged to marry her.]]
* ''Literature/HarryPotter'':
** This happens repeatedly to Harry, thanks to Rita Skeeter's false reporting in ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFire'' that Hermione is his girlfriend. Harry and Hermione are LikeBrotherAndSister, but he still has to explain things to a worried Viktor Krum--and has to ''keep on'' saying it to half of Hogwarts. Poor Hermione is attacked by Harry's [[EstrogenBrigade rabid fangirls]] and even has [[MamaBear Molly]] giving her the cold shoulder for a while.
** In ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheDeathlyHallows'', Harry even has to say this to ''Ron'' at one point.
** It doesn't help that in ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix'', Cho thinks that Harry is two-timing her for Hermione during their Valentine's Day date. She's also angry at Hermione for not telling the members of the Dumbledore's Army about the jinx in the members list which earned her friend Marietta several pimples for attempting to expose them to Professor Umbridge; Harry retorts that Marietta got what she deserved and Hermione is doing the right thing, which gets Cho accusing him of defending his "darling Hermione". Needless to say, this ends their relationship.
* In ''Literature/OnTheJellicoeRoad'', Taylor denies being Jonah Griggs' girlfriend, even though she is secretly in love with him (and they get together at the end anyway).
* In ''Literature/DoraWilkSeries'', Joshua keeps telling Miron that CuteAndPsycho Laoise is not his girlfriend, despite Miron's mocking (if good-natured) claims to the contrary. Seeing how Joshua is the resident NiceGuy, it's hard to say what his feelings for Laoise really are.
* In ''Literature/WutheringHeights'' [[NaiveNewcomer Mr. Lockwood]] mistakes Catherine (II) for his wife instead of his [[ObnoxiousInLaws daughter-in-law]], which Heathcliff finds amusing. Mr. Lockwood then states she must be Hareton's wife, which causes Hareton to [[CrushBlush blush]] and be [[AllLoveIsUnrequited far less amused]].
* ''Literature/TheWarAgainstTheChtorr''. In "A Matter for Men," [=McCarthy=]'s JerkAss co-worker Ted deliberately lets an annoying officer think they're gay lovers to piss him off. [=McCarthy=] spends the rest of the novel denying that he and Ted are boyfriends, "or any other kind of friends."
* ''Discworld/MovingPictures'':
-->'''Gaspode:''' Your girlfriend…\\
'''Victor:''' She's not my girlfriend!\\
'''Gaspode:''' Would-be girlfriend…
* ''Franchise/{{Star Wars|ExpandedUniverse}}'':
** In ''[[Literature/HandOfThrawn Vision of the Future]]'', an alien calls Mara Luke's "beloved companion," clearly misunderstanding their relationship. Then again, maybe not, since they get engaged at [[ItWasHisSled the end of the book.]] Also, in the same book, Mara reveals to Luke that she wasn't "involved" with Lando.
** ''Literature/DeathStar'' has Uli, a jaded surgeon who still pines after Bariss Offee, a Jedi Knight who was killed twenty years ago. He's summoned to tend to Leia after she is tortured. While talking to her, as she plants the idea that he should risk imprisonment and leave Imperial service, he's struck by her eyes, which are brown. Bariss's were blue. Talking to her even for that little space of time shakes him up, and he tells his companions about her. Later this leads to them referring to her as his girlfriend, and he delivers the {{Stock Phrase|s}}.
* In book two of ''Literature/CodexAlera'' features a simultaneous "S/he is not my mate!" from Tavi and Kitai.
* In ''[[Literature/TheUnderlandChronicles Gregor and the Marks of Secret]]'', Gregor and Luxa are going to investigate the Nibbler's situation, but since no one can know about it, they pretend that they are going on a picnic. Of course, Howard shows up and offers to join them, so Gregor, looking for an excuse, tells him that they're going on a date. Even when Howard finds out that Gregor was lying, he still chews him out because, seeing as Luxa's a princess and Gregor's not even an Underlander, they couldn't possibly be married. Gregor states several times that he and Luxa aren't like that and marriage is thinking ''way'' too far ahead, but then Howard asks Gregor why he thought Howard might believe it in the first place, rendering all his arguments useless.
* Throughout most of ''[[Literature/{{Twilight}} Eclipse]]'', Bella tries to convince everyone that Jacob is Not Her Boyfriend. Then she realizes that she does love him, but she loves Edward ''more'', thus casting Jacob in the role of [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Unlucky Childhood Friend]].
* ''Literature/TheDresdenFiles'':
** Pops up several times between Harry and different characters. (Harry isn't good with relationships.) His mysterious ex Elaine and police officer friend Murphy have each mistaken the other for his current girlfriend. Also, people mistook Harry for being in a relationship with Susan Rodriguez before he actually would go so far as to call it that, since he's the chivalrous type.
** Later in the series, used [[MistakenForGay between Harry and Thomas Raith]]. Thomas is intentionally acting flamboyantly gay. Harry is very open with and trusting of Thomas even though Thomas is a vampire, but he can't tell anyone the real reason: [[spoiler: they're half-brothers]]. Not knowing the real reason, most people jump to the conclusion that Thomas is Harry's lover. At one point Harry deliberately plays that role, and some minor characters continue to give him a hard time about it.
** Even later, after [[spoiler:Molly]] becomes a main character, Harry also gets this with her. She's his apprentice in magic, after all, and it's something of a social norm for wizards to sleep with their apprentices.
* Averted in the ''Literature/DarkestPowers'' series. Multiple times, people talking to Derek will refer to Chloe as "your girlfriend", and while talking to Chloe will refer to Derek as "your boyfriend". They never deny it. For one thing, it's not worth it; the people taunting them about it are either bad guys looking to kill and rape them, or JerkAss [[{{Muggles}} humans]] mocking what they think is a schizophrenic girl. For another, Chloe quickly learns that denying a relationship between them only serves to convince people she's hiding something.
* Played with and lampshaded in Creator/RykESpoor and Creator/EricFlint's novel, ''Literature/{{Boundary}}''. A.J. and Jackie are two scientists who work together and are friends; they also bicker a lot. As such, Jackie always gets ribbed by the other people in their team about her "boyfriend" A.J. She vehemently denies these accusations to the knowing reaction of the others. Of course, when A.J. ends up with his real love interest--another scientist named Helen, which was [[ShipTease teased]] earlier in the novel--Jackie smugly declares to everyone within hearing distance, "I ''told'' you he wasn't my boyfriend."
* In ''[[Literature/PercyJacksonAndTheOlympians Percy Jackson and The Battle of the Labyrinth]]'', Percy makes it clear to his mother that his planned afternoon at the movies with Annabeth is ''not'' a date. Sally Jackson is not convinced. One gets the distinct impression that neither is Percy. [[spoiler:And yes, he and Annabeth do become a couple.]]
* In ''Firestar'', Ned [=DuBois=] is so deeply estranged from his wife, Betsy, that neither of them gives a damn anymore. Which is why he spends every third page thinking about exactly how little she must give a shit that he's disappeared to Brazil, is sleeping with every woman who will let him, and hasn't yet finished his letter to her.
* In the first book of Creator/TerryGoodkind's ''Literature/SwordOfTruth'' series, Zedd is introduced to Kahlan by Richard... but not before Zedd calls out Richard for being rude by not introducing him to his "girlfriend." Richard calmly denies this, only for Zedd to joke about Richard, therefore, denying that Kahlan is a girl.
* In ''Literature/{{Ravenscliff}}'', Cecile inverts it saying "He's not my ''brother''," meaning to her cheerleader friend that she has an option on her new [[FlirtyStepsiblings stepbrother]].
* In Creator/SarahAHoyt's ''Literature/DrawOneInTheDark'', Kyrie denies that she is Tom's girlfriend to his father.
* In ''Literature/WarAndSnowflakes'', both the "she is not my girlfriend" and "he is not my boyfriend" variants are uttered many times, forming a RunningGag.
* Yellowfang and Raggedstar act like this in ''Literature/WarriorCats: Yellowfang's Secret''. At first.
* ''Literature/SoonIWillBeInvincible''. {{Cyborg}} ActionGirl Fatale and DarkActionGirl Lily are looking over the scene of a battle between their SuperTeam and {{Supervillain}} Dr Impossible. Fatale comments, "I think your boyfriend beat up my boyfriend." Lily points out that due to her HeelFaceTurn, Impossible is no longer her boyfriend, and the fact that Blackwolf exchanged a few words with Fatale in the elevator does not make him Fatale's boyfriend either.
* In Creator/LJagiLamplighter's ''The Unexpected Enlightenment of Literature/RachelGriffin'', Rachel says this about Gaius. She has more than the usual excuse, since they only met the day previous and she feels the gap in their ages is too wide. [[spoiler:Later, knowing him to be in danger, Rachel is upset because she hasn't really had a chance to consider whether she wants him as her boyfriend.]]
* In Creator/RogerZelazny's ''Literature/LordOfLight'', Rudra declares that he never was romantically involved with Kali. The reason why he started hunting jackbirds after one of her lovers was incarnated as one was that he disliked their songs.
* In ''LightNovel/ValkyrieIntoTheHeavens'', Danny says this regarding Michiko.
-->'''Danny''': She's my best friend, [[ParentalSubstitute Max]]. She's been inside my head... that doesn't mean she's my girlfriend or something!
* In ''Literature/PleaseDontTellMyParentsImASupervillain'', Gabriel says this about Lucyfar, although neither he nor the rest of the book offers any explanation for why he lets her {{Glomp}} him or why he shows up for what appears to be a purely social meeting.
** In ''Literature/PleaseDontTellMyParentsIBlewUpTheMoon,'' after [[spoiler:the BigDamnKiss of the]] last book, Ray and Penny's relationship remains poorly defined. They spent too much time avoiding awkward conversations.
* Simon towards Maureen in ''Literature/TheMortalInstruments'', in whom he is genuinely not interested despite her liking him to an absurd degree. It comes back to bite him in the ass later on.
* ''Literature/{{Archvillain}}'': Maira protests several times that she is not Mighty Mike's girlfriend, despite him [[DamselInDistress rescuing her]] on a regular basis and flying her to school every morning.
* ''Literature/JourneyToChaos''
** Tiza is firm in telling others that she is ''not'' in love with Nolien. He's just a SquishyWizard that she has to take of; it's her job as TheTeam's tank. The occasional SmoochOfVictory is irrelevant and so is their weekly NotADate.
** Eric and Annala endure this sort of teasing from Revas, Oito and many others (including villians). [[PairTheSmartOnes With their "nerd mating dance," it's hard not to]].
* ''Literature/ZeroSight'': [[TheProtagonist Dieter]], when asked by Jules ([[BettyAndVeronica Betty]]) if he and [[TheVamp Rei]] ([[BettyAndVeronica Veronica]]) had sex in front of the fireplace in Rei's cabin, denies it vehemently - much to the dismay of the rest of the students in the cafeteria, who had been [[GossipyHens eavesdropping]].
* In the ''Literature/{{Clementine}}'' books, Clementine insistently states in her narration that even though he's trying, Margaret's big brother Mitchell is N-O-T ''not'' her boyfriend; though she also admits that if she ever had one, it would be him.
* In the backstory of ''Literature/TheGreatGatsby'', Nick apparently had this problem back home, since he spent a lot of time hanging around his female friend. Unlike most examples, she really ''wasn't'' his girlfriend -- part of the reason he moved was because people were starting to gossip and expecting him to propose, which Nick didn't want to do.

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Daniel Jackson from ''Series/StargateSG1'' claims as much when Vala says they had to reschedule their "date". Of course, no one believes him.
* Joan in ''Series/JoanOfArcadia'' insists this regarding Adam about OncePerEpisode, until they [[RelationshipUpgrade finally kiss for the first time]].
* Brief example happens in the ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' episode "Inheritance," where Data tells his "mother" Juliana (the wife of his creator Dr. Soong, she claims) that he's going to see Counselor Troi; Juliana assumes the two are close, and comments that she's glad that the accessories her husband designed that made him "compatible" with humans actually work. (Not a true example of the Trope, of course, because Troi is ''not'' Data's girlfriend; he was going to see her because she's the Counselor, and Juliana misunderstood.)
* On ''Series/{{MASH}}'', Colonel Potter has just become the unit commander and is getting up to speed on his staff. He calls a name, the person says "Here" (or the like), and then he reviews their record and makes some comments. He goes over Margaret Houlihan's record, compliments her, and then moves on:
-->'''Colonel Potter:''' Major Frank Burns.\\
'''Houlihan:''' JustFriends, sir. ''(realizes)'' I mean, he's not here, sir.
** A {{running gag}} in the early years of ''Series/{{Mash}}'' was Frank and Margaret trying to hide their relationship, even though everyone in camp knew they were an item.
* Happened a few times to the Doctor and Rose in the first two seasons of the 2005 revival of ''Series/DoctorWho'', apparently just because the writers were running out of ways to broadcast that the new show had romantic subtext.
** After River Song thoroughly distracts the Doctor in "The Impossible Astronaut":
--->'''Canton Delaware''': So what's going on here?\\
'''The Doctor''': Ah... nothing; she's just a friend.\\ '''Rory''': I think he's talking about the possible alien incursion?
** Later, however, River becomes one of the very few of the Doctor's love interests to eventually avert this, with them flirting pretty openly initially and later the Doctor actually marries her.
** In a flashback scene in "Let's Kill Hitler", it's learned that Rory and Amy had denied any romantic involvement, only while Rory insisted that he and Amy were just friends, Amy at the same time said, [[MistakenForGay "He's gay."]] She suspected his sexual preference because he had never shown the slightest interest in any girls... only to realize that he ''was'' interested in one girl - her.
** The Doctor and Clara, less out of shyness or uncertainty about their feelings, but out of a wish to act mature and avoid unreasonable expectations in favor of preserving their deep, underlying friendship. The flimsyness of the denial varies based on which stage in their relationship we are talking about; In late series 7, it goes to the point of featuring plenty of touching and kissing (if rarely near the mouth), and everyone around them calling them an item despite their half-hearted protests to the contrary, but both their deliberate tolerating and indulging of the ambiguity comes back to bite them when they have to deal with hurt feelings anyway after his [[TheSlowPath long stay on Trenzalore]] and [[TheNthDoctor subsequent regeneration]]. At the end of the next episode, "Deep Breath", he uses the phrase actually meaning to break it off [[AnchoredShip (right before admitting that he ''did'' think of them as an item, but had come to see that as a mistake on his part)]] while trying to at least salvage their friendship after she reacted negatively to his changed, notably older appearance (In truth, she couldn't care less what he looks like, but he didn't hear her make that speech, and she still can't help being somewhat off-put by finding his gruffer, less predictable and distinctly less touchy-feely demeanor much harder to read). But before long, regardless of their frequent fallouts and shift towards [[VitriolicBestBuds passive-aggressive banter]], he's back to constantly trying impress her, getting very competitive whenever anyone else tries to, giving her the occasional LongingLook, offhandedly referring to one of their meetings as a "Date"(!) when she's out of earshot, and acting ''blatantly'' flattered when he mistakenly assumes that she's settled for a lookalike as a boyfriend. This progressively turns into a clusterfuck when it turns out that since he declared himself "not her boyfriend", she has started a serious relationship with a co-worker, and winds up entangling herself in a web of lies to keep them from meeting since they almost instantly dislike each other.
** After said boyfriend [[spoiler: dies tragically]], and the narrative moves into Series 9, Clara and the Doctor's relationship deepens and they do become a couple in all but name (in a non-sexual fashion, or so it would appear on screen), with Clara in "Before the Flood" even at one point playing the "if you love me" card and acknowledging that after [[spoiler: Danny's death]], she's not ready to lose the Doctor, too. (It's worth noting that in the first episode after [[spoiler: Danny's death]], Clara tells the Doctor that, besides him, the Doctor is the only other man she'd ever have married.) Climaxes in the final three episodes when [[spoiler: Clara's death results in the Doctor becoming TheUnfettered and nearly destroying time itself to bring her back]], during which this trope is invoked in "Hell Bent" when the immortal Ashildr challenges the Doctor as to why he's doing all this for Clara, to which he replies, "She's just my friend," which triggers a DeadpanSnarker response that makes it clear the woman doesn't believe it.
* Parodied in ''Series/{{Spaced}}'', when Tim reacts indignantly in this fashion to a (sarcastic) suggestion from Daisy that his "boyfriend" Mike is on the phone for him... only to purr "Hi, babe." in a seductive tone as soon as he picks up the phone.
** A similar joke appears in ''Film/ShaunOfTheDead'', once again an ActorAllusion between the characters played by [[HeterosexualLifePartners Simon Pegg (Tim / Shaun) and Nick Frost (Mike / Ed)]].
*** The DVD commentary puts this down to them ''forgetting'' they'd already done the joke in ''Spaced'', Shaun's pained expression after saying it being Simon remembering during filming.
* ''Series/{{Monk}}'': Natalie is highly amused whenever someone thinks she suppresses romantic feelings for Monk.
** In "Mr. Monk and the Game Show", Monk goes on Roddy Lankman's show ''Treasure Chest''. Before they begin the first round, Lankman asks Monk if there's anyone at home to whom he wants to say hello. He mentions Sharona, causing Lankman to ask, "And how long have you and Sharona been married?" Monk quickly corrects him.
** Inverted in "Mr. Monk Gets Married", where to rescue Randy's mother Maria from gold-digging antiques dealer Dalton Padron, Monk and Sharona must infiltrate a marriage counselling camp by (of course) pretending to be a couple with severely exaggerated problems, with Monk playing a cowardly mop salesman and Sharona pretending to be his alcoholic wife. Their marriage is the absolute worst one in history. When at the end they reveal the ruse, the marriage counselor is relieved.
** In "Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion", Dianne Brooks finds Monk in line while people are turning in their registration forms. She asks him if he's dating, and he firmly replies no. When this happens, Monk is by himself as Natalie is heading back to her car. Later, though, Natalie has reconsidered and decides to stay with Monk for the remainder of the reunion. Naturally, when Dianne spots Monk and Natalie together at the cafeteria, this happens:
-->'''Dianne Brooks:''' Adrian! There you are. We've been looking for you. ''[Dianne notices Natalie]''\\
'''Natalie Teeger:''' Hi! I'm Natalie Teeger. ''[Natalie and Dianne shake hands]''\\
'''Dianne Brooks:''' Hi. Dianne Brooks.\\
'''Natalie Teeger:''' I'm his assistant.\\
'''Dianne Brooks:''' Ahh... Oh, so you two aren't... ''[she points between Monk and Natalie; Natalie laughs]''\\
'''Natalie Teeger:''' ''[grins]'' No!
** Also happens in one scene in "Mr. Monk Gets Lotto Fever," where Natalie is signing autographs, Monk comes up to grab some wipes from her purse and one of Natalie's fans asks her if Monk is her boyfriend. Natalie corrects the fan.
** Inverted again in "Mr. Monk is Someone Else". Panicked by unwanted romantic advances from Lola, Monk quickly blurts out that he already has a girlfriend, and her name "Natalie Teeger'''b'''" (it's French Canadian).
-->'''Captain Stottlemeyer:''' [[DeadpanSnarker Well I guess you have a date, Miss Teegerb]].
** In the TieInNovel ''Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii'', when Monk and Natalie first encounter Natalie's friend Candace, she seems to think that Natalie was exaggerating her claims about Monk's OCD compulsions, in part because she's never met Monk before and because Monk happens to be on an anti-OCD drug that he takes to control himself during flights. Due to Monk not acting like himself, Candace assumes that he's her boyfriend.
* Big Pete of ''Series/TheAdventuresOfPeteAndPete'' spells it out: "Look, you're a girl, and you're a friend--but you're not a girlfriend!"
* [[HoYay A frequent refrain]] of the two boys of ''Series/{{Psych}}''.
* ''Series/PhilOfTheFuture'', in the episode in which Phil gets tired of being carted around doing "girl stuff" with Keely:
-->'''Phil:''' I don't wanna be your ''girlfriend'', I wanna be your ''boyfriend''! ...I mean, your friend, who's a boy. A guy. A guy friend.
** And later in the same episode:
-->'''Keely:''' Phil, you can tell me anything. I'm your ''girlfriend''… I--I--I mean your friend who's a girl. A gal. A gal friend.
** Seems to be a recurring motif with '''Keely's''' actress Aly Michalka. See ''Series/{{Hellcats}}'' and Marti and Dan for details.
* A version appears on ''Series/{{Friends}}'' after Chandler and Monica first had sex in secret.
-->'''Joey:''' Have you seen Monica?\\
'''Chandler:''' I'm not seeing Monica!
* ''Series/{{Smallville}}'':
-->'''Lana:''' You and Comicbook/{{Lois|Lane}}.\\
'''[[Franchise/{{Superman}} Clark]]:''' Lois? She's bossy. She's rude, she's conceited. I can't stand her!\\
'''Lana:''' The best ones always start that way.
* ''Series/GreysAnatomy'': Lexie invokes this about George to Sloan at the start of season 5.
* Ted's GirlOfTheWeek in ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' assumes that Robin and Barney are going out.
-->'''Robin:''' [[RapidFireNo No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.]] Barney and I are not together, no, no.\\
'''Barney:''' Really? Sixteen "no"s? Really?
** Robin and Barney also spend the season five premiere firmly denying that they are boyfriend and girlfriend. They seem to have no problem admitting that they are a couple, so long as the terms "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" aren't used.
* ''Series/{{Quantico}}'': Raina firmly denies that she and Simon are a couple.
-->'''Simon:''' Not many couples can say they've both been kicked out of the FBI.
-->'''Raina:''' It's not funny and we're not a couple.
* ''Series/TheXFiles'': If it happened once, it happened a thousand times to Mulder and Scully, most notably in "The Rain King". Basically guaranteed to happen starting about mid-season four onward.
** It even happens in the [[Film/TheXFilesIWantToBelieve 2008 movie]], though in reference to being married.
-->'''Father Joe:''' No. I can see you're a woman of faith, but not in the same things as your husband.\\
'''Scully:''' He's not my husband.
* In ''Series/That70sShow'', when Jackie and Hyde started their relationship, they wouldn't admit that they're together, even though they were making out all the time.
-->'''Jackie:''' He is not my boyfriend.\\
'''Hyde:''' I'm not her boyfriend. They just don't get it.\\
'''Jackie:''' No. Why would they? Let's go, baby.
* Series/{{Bones}} and Booth do this many, many times.
* ''Series/TheWestWing'': Josh denies a relationship between himself and Donna at least twice, once to Amy Gardner (who becomes his girlfriend after it's cleared up), and once to Lt. Commander Jack Reese (who dates Donna after confirming he's not getting in the way).
** Inverted with some irony on the campaign trail in the last season.
-->'''Josh:''' ''(into the phone)'' No, I don't have Donna!
::: She's lying next to him at the time...
* In the 1990's Australian series ''Police Rescue'' the two main characters, Micky and Georgia, are going to interview a witness, who asks Micky: "Is this your girlfriend?" Micky responds truthfully that no, she's his (police) partner. Georgia later snarks at him about this, as while it's technically true, there's always been an obvious vibe between them.
* ''Series/ICarly'': In "iGo to Japan", the check-in clerk at a hotel mistakes the 15-year-old pair for a honeymooning couple. Freddie gives Carly an eyebrow raise and gets slapped across the face for his stupidity. In "iLike Jake", Carly gives Freddie a kiss on the nose for helping her to fix Jake's terrible singing voice, and Jake mistakes their kiss for them being together.
* In the ''Series/RoyalPains'' episode "Am I Blue?", Evan's new just-friend is under the persistent impression that Divya is his girlfriend:
-->'''Evan:''' Uh, we're not really...\\
'''Anna:''' You'll make up! You're so good together.
* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''
** Happened in, "Blood Ties".
-->'''Glory:''' ''(about Spike)'' He wakes up; tell your boyfriend to watch his mouth.\\
'''Buffy:''' He is ''NOT'' my boyfriend.
** In fact, Buffy often denies Spike being her boyfriend, even when it is revealed that she had slept with him.
-->'''Buffy:''' [Anya did] something very stupid.\\
'''Xander:''' With your boyfriend.\\
'''Buffy:''' He is not my boyfriend.
** Technically, it was true in both those cases, as they weren't having a relationship in season 5, and in the second example, she had already broken up with him. But Buffy denied it even while they were having an ongoing sexual relationship (granted, in this scene it was partly because she was being evaluated by a social worker and he wasn't the most presentable boyfriend):
-->'''Ms. Kroger:''' Um, Miss Summers, if you and your boyfriend would like to--\\
'''Buffy:''' He is NOT-- ''(Spike looks over with a scowl; Buffy clears throat)'' ...not my, my boyfriend, he's, um, just... a... ''(Spike waits to hear what she'll say)'' Spike... this nice woman is, uh, ''(meaningfully)'' from Social Services?
** Buffy even denies it to Spike when they're alone together; in fact, his referring to her as "love" or "my girl" is a guaranteed BerserkButton as Buffy refuses to admit they are (or should be) having anything more than comfort sex. A notable use of this trope as it's not PlayedForLaughs but is a sign of their DestructiveRomance. In the final episode of the series, Buffy gives the most truthful version of this trope when she says that Spike isn't her boyfriend, but "he is in my heart."
** The first time Buffy used this line on the show, however, it was about Angel--in season 3 episode "Revelations", when Buffy's friends finally learned that Angel was back from hell.
-->'''Buffy:''' What are you guys talking about?\\
'''Oz:''' Oddly enough, your boyfriend--again.\\
'''Buffy:''' He's not my boyfriend. Really, truly, he's... I don't know.
** Then we have the comics where Buffy learns Satsu is in love with her, and they sleep together. Willow finds out and when the topic is brought up Buffy denies that Satsu is her girlfriend, before they sleep together again.
%%* ''Series/{{Andromeda}}'': This happens to Dylan and Rommie at least once in the first season.
* ''Series/{{Castle}}'' has a variant in the first few seasons; someone questioning whether Castle and Beckett are, you know, will get approximately this response:
-->'''Beckett:''' No.\\
'''Castle:''' Not yet.\\
'''Beckett:''' ''(glare)''
%%* ''Series/{{NCIS}}'': Tony and Ziva.
* Happens on two related episodes of ''Series/LawAndOrderCriminalIntent''. Robert Goren's brother Frank assumes that Alex Eames, his police partner, is Bobby's girlfriend; Bobby corrects him, but it doesn't seem to sink in (possibly because Frank is a drug user). In the next episode, Bobby gets a phone call from his hospitalized mother Frances, who says that Frank told her Bobby has a girlfriend and she wants to meet the woman. Bobby tries to explain that she's not his girlfriend but his mother hangs up on him, leaving him awkwardly telling Alex, "My mother wants to meet you."
* A variation on ''Series/TheMightyBoosh''. Lance Dior accuses Howard of being Vince's wife. Howard bursts out with "''I'm not his wife, am I! I don't know where he is at all times!''" Lance is '''Not''' convinced. In another episode, a cabin owner thinks that Vince and Howard are together, but Howard denies it.
** Usually averted. [[DudeLooksLikeALady Vince]] is mistaken for Howard's wife/girlfriend in ''many'' episodes, and instead of denying it--like you would expect two supposedly straight male friends to do--they just look slightly pained. Apparently, it happens so often they just gave up trying to protest.
* ''Series/AmericanDreams'' has a couple examples with these, mostly with Sam and Meg; they ''can't'' get together, due to Sam being black and it being 1966. JJ also gets this with a couple of his wartime romantic interests, where he actually has no real interest in the girl because of Beth, his fiancée back home. There was also a variation on this when one of the members of JJ's platoon is involved with a reporter; although he says this, it's implied they actually are and he's just not telling, and of course EveryoneCanSeeIt anyway.
* In the season 4 premier of ''Series/TheBigBangTheory'', Sheldon insists that the girl he met on a dating site, who has been texting with him for four months and intends to bear his children, is not his girlfriend.
-->'''Sheldon:''' Amy Farrah Fowler has asked me to meet her mother.\\
'''Leonard:''' Yeah. So?\\
'''Sheldon:''' What does that mean?\\
'''Leonard:''' Well, you know how you're always saying that Amy is a girl who's your friend, and not your girlfriend?\\
'''Sheldon:''' Uh-huh.\\
'''Leonard:''' You can't say that anymore.
** They finally make a RelationshipUpgrade in season 5 when Sheldon gets jealous of Amy dating other guys and ends up asking her to be his girlfriend.
** The first season had this exchange:
-->'''Mrs. Cooper:''' ''(To Leonard and Penny)'' Might say you two make a cute couple.\\
'''Penny:''' We're not a couple.\\
'''Leonard:''' Us? Psh, no. We're just two singles. Like the cheese... individually wrapped. Not together.\\
'''Mrs. Cooper:''' I strike a nerve?\\
'''Howard:''' Oh yeah.
** Of course, in this case, it wasn't so much denial as it was trying to cover up his painfully obvious crush.
* In season five of ''Series/{{Dexter}}'', everyone who meets Lumen assumes that she is Dexter's girlfriend, but he insists that she is merely his "tenant". Though in fairness, she really wasn't his girlfriend at the time.
* Comes up in nearly every episode of ''Series/BurnNotice''. Everyone except Michael knows that Fiona is, in fact, his girlfriend. Michael, for his part, is only tempted by ''one'' other woman over the course of the series, and she turns out to be an assassin deliberately playing on every weakness he has.
* Occurs in season two of ''Series/AshesToAshes'' TheBabyTrap episode, [[BelligerentSexualTension Gene and Alex]] have been *ahem* pulling all nighters in order to combat the corruption in the force, which the rest of the team tactfully ignore. Enter [[NewOldFlame Jackie]]:
-->'''Jackie:''' Are you shagging my future husband?\\
'''Alex:''' [panicky look] {{No|tWhatItLooksLike}}!
* Bret and Jemaine from ''Music/FlightOfTheConchords'' are sometimes mistaken for a couple, specifically by Brahbrah, a woman they were both trying to impress. It was a fair assumption to make, given that they're two thirty-something guys who share a bedroom, and they spend quite a bit of the episode wrestling each other.
* Series/InspectorLynley and his partner Sergeant Havers. ''His own wife'' half-seriously suspects him of having an affair with her! And she's not the only one. They're not together... [[UnresolvedSexualTension yet]].
%%* In the ''Series/WizardsOfWaverlyPlace'' episode "Family Game Night".
* On the BBC show ''Series/{{Sherlock}}'', people often assume that Sherlock and John are a couple, and John corrects them, usually by saying "We're not a couple."
* Justified on ''Series/{{Supernatural}}''. Sam and Dean Winchester are attached at the hip, look nothing alike, spend most of their time checking into motel rooms together, almost always use aliases with different last names, and at any given moment have been caught in the midst of deep emotional tension you could cut with a knife. Add Dean's tendency to joke-flirt ("Sammy, I get all tingly when you take control." "Be my Valentine?" etc. etc.) and the fact that they're both so gosh-darn pretty (a stereotype, yes, but still a factor) and it's hardly any surprise that they have to keep frantically saying "No, we're brothers! Honest!"
* Played with in the ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'' short "Catching Trouble," and combining the trope with HaveAGayOldTime, when the announcer refers to hunter Bob Ross as his "boyfriend."
-->'''Announcer''': My boyfriend knows what he's doing!\\
'''Joel''': Look, he likes you as a friend, but he's not your boyfriend!
* Season 4 of ''Series/GameOfThrones'' has Cersei Lannister asking Brienne of Tarth if she's in love with her brother Jaime. Brienne denies it (though in the books, it's implied that she had a one-sided crush on him), but it's actually PlayedForLaughs; what she says is that she loves Jaime "like a brother, Your Grace." This doesn't exactly ease [[BrotherSisterIncest his sister's mind]].
* ''Series/MalcolmInTheMiddle'': Malcolm and Cynthia, in Seasons 2 and 3. Much to Malcolm's embarrassment, his friends and family rib him mercilessly about their "relationship" whenever Cynthia is nearby, prompting him to say this very line several times.
* In Season 5 of ''Series/{{Arrow}}'', Oliver gets annoyed when several characters refer to HotScoop Susan Williams as his "girlfriend" after she gives him her number.
* ''Series/Daredevil2015'': Matt Murdock ends up dating [[SexySecretary Karen Page]] for a bit in season 2. After their first kiss, they have a hard time admitting to Foggy that they are now dating, even after flirting a bit in front of him at Nelson & Murdock, or [[HoldingHands holding hands]] while entering Frank Castle's hospital room.

* "I'm Not Your Boyfriend" by 3OH3.
* 10cc, "I'm Not In Love".
* The song by Music/MichaelJackson, "Billie Jean", is focused on this trope. [[spoiler:But, it was implied that while Billie Jean was not his lover, her son was indeed his son.]]

* In ''Theatre/ThePajamaGame'', Babe, in denial that she's attracted to Sid, sings "I'm Not At All In Love," a claim which is met with smirking derision from the girls:
-->''It's easy to see that her daffy grin\\
Is the grin she always wears,\\
And she's breathless because\\
She ran up a flight of stairs!\\
Obviously! Naturally! Certainly!''
* Many examples in musical theatre of people singing ''you'' are not my boyfriend/girlfriend. Of course, whether they mean it or not, they'll certainly be in love with that person by the end of the show (sometimes the end of the song) :
** "Make Believe" from ''Show Boat'' ("might as well make believe I love you... for to tell the truth, I do!").
** "People Will Say We're in Love" from ''Theatre/{{Oklahoma}}''.
** "If I Loved You" from ''Theatre/{{Carousel}}''.
** In "I'll Know" from ''Theatre/GuysAndDolls'', Sky and Sarah sing about their perfect loves and how unlike Sarah/Sky said love will be. A few scenes later, they start to realise their attraction to each other.
** "Don't Like You" from ''The Beautiful Game'' (a.k.a. ''The Boys in the Photograph'') by Creator/AndrewLloydWebber and Creator/BenElton.
* Roger and Mimi in ''Theatre/{{RENT}}''. In the song "Happy New Year", Benny sings, "Does your boyfriend know who your last boyfriend was?' and Roger responds, "I'm not her boyfriend!".

[[folder:Video Games]]
* In ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Heart Gold''/''Soul Silver'', the grandmother of the opposite gender friend of the player character (can be either gender) suggests that the characters are boyfriend and girlfriend, and one of the characters immediately denies it.
* Inverted and then, well, blown up by Squall for otherwise uncharacteristic hilarity in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII''. Squall is more or less forced into showing Rinoa around Balamb Garden, and stops in at Dr. Kadowaki's office. The following exchange occurs:
-->'''Kadowaki:''' Hi there, Squall! Oh my... it's not every day I see you walk around with a girl! Is she your girlfriend?\\
'''Squall:''' Yes.\\
'''Rinoa:''' Are you serious?! Squall?! I'm gonna take it seriously.\\
'''Squall:''' I'm serious.\\
'''Rinoa:''' Woo. I'm speechless.\\
'''Squall:''' I'm seriously joking.
* Played with in the [[ItMakesSenseInContext weirdest possible context]] in ''VideoGame/{{Psychonauts}}'':
-->'''Raz:''' I don't know if she's really my ''girlfriend''. I mean, I think she...\\
'''Lungfish Resistance Member:''' I only meant she was your friend who is a girl, Goggalor.
* In ''VideoGame/BeyondGoodAndEvil'', when Jade first brings her new sidekick Double H home with her to the lighthouse, several of the orphans naturally assume he's her new boyfriend. Jade quickly tries to correct them.
-->'''Jade:''' I swear, he's not like the others!
* In ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss'', there is one point where the party returns to the first real dungeon the game had. Luke and Tear, having been the only party members at that point, remark upon how it was night when they were last here, which leads to the rest of the party wondering why on earth they didn't know that Luke and Tear were "in a place like this, alone, at night." Luke quickly exclaims "[[NotWhatItLooksLike It wasn't like that!]]" and starts hastily trying to explain himself when [[DefrostingIceQueen Tear]] suddenly states simply, "The very idea is absurd." Luke is visibly stung, indicating that perhaps he falls under the third example at the top. Of course, any sympathy the player may feel for Luke is immediately replaced by laughter over [[DeadpanSnarker Jade's]] [[CrowningMomentOfFunny brilliant]] reaction to the whole thing.
-->'''Tear:''' The very idea is absurd. ''(walks away a bit, everyone else remains in place)'' What are you doing? Come on.\\
'''Luke:''' ...now I'm mad.\\
'''Guy:''' Damn, that was cold...\\
'''Jade:''' ''(sounding VERY happy)'' Yes, it was.\\
'''Guy:''' You sound like you're having fun, Colonel.\\
'''Jade:''' More than you could ever imagine.\\
'''Guy:''' ...you're horrible.
** It happens a lot between the two. The second [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDAj3kMjU8c OVA]] has this frequently.
* In ''VideoGame/TalesOfRebirth'', Tytree at one point refers to Claire as "Veigue's girlfriend", to which he calmly responds "She's just a childhood friend". It would be an inversion to the usual reaction a character is supposed to have, but then again, he's [[TheStoic Veigue]]...
* In ''VideoGame/TalesOfVesperia'', Estelle has to remark this multiple times about Yuri, insisting that "it's not like that!" whenever Raven and/or Judith will tease her about it while she's blushing furiously (Yuri doesn't blush, but does go very wide-eyed whenever he's involved in getting teased, and never denies it). This example is much more ambiguous than others, though, on if they really are attracted to each other or not.
* In ''Videogame/HyperdimensionNeptunia'' in the second game, Mk2, IF snaps when the rest of the cast is saying that they would like to have Compa as a wife, so she claims she belongs to her, immediately realizing what she just said and claiming that she didn't mean it like that. Something similar happens in the trailer of the videogame Geki Noire, with Noire talking without thinking about Neptune.
* In ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}'', in both ''Sorrow'' games, Soma frequently feels the need to point out that Mina is not his girlfriend, despite the fact that its obvious to everyone else that she's his designated {{Love Interest|s}}. He will actually ''become Dracula'' if he sees his beau hurt, but she's n-n-not his girlfriend.
** This is actually said completely seriously in ''Portrait of Ruin''. Whether or not Jonathan and Charlotte are still in the denial stage and/or just have really good poker faces is up to you:
-->'''Vincent:''' Even so... the two brave vampire hunters! I envy you!\\
'''Vincent:''' ''(sigh)'' The perfect couple! I'm slightly jealous!\\
'''Vincent:''' Hi there... the young couple! So naive!\\
'''Jonathan:''' She's [[LikeBrotherAndSister like my kid sister!]]\\
'''Charlotte:''' ''Jonathan!'' [[BerserkButton Stop treating me like a child!]]\\
'''[[SpeakInUnison Jonathan and Charlotte:]]''' Vincent, you're scaring me...
* Odd example: ''VideoGame/MortalKombatShaolinMonks''. Kung Lao takes a jab at Liu Kang whenever Kitana is seen or mentioned with the former denying any relationship. In canon, it's heavily implied they are supposed to be just that.
** Given a nod in [[VideoGame/MortalKombat9 the latest game]], during Kung Lao's story mode chapter wherein he and Liu Kang search for Kitana:
-->'''Kung Lao:''' I hope your girlfriend is worth Lord Raiden's anger, Liu Kang.
-->'''Liu Kang:''' Notice that I am ignoring you.
* There are examples of this trope in ''VideoGame/BaldursGateII''. Jaheira does it at least twice (once in an incident involving a magical locket, another when you are awakened by bandits).
* Implied usage in ''[[VideoGame/HalfLife2 Half-Life 2: Episode 2]]''. A random resistance member asks Alyx "So, is he your boyfriend or something?" in regards to Gordon. Gordon himself is out of earshot before her answer is heard.
** However, she doesn't really object when her own father hints at it being quite obvious. And she seems much more embarrassed about her father talking about such things, then about what he said.
* "Adell and I are enemies!" practically becomes Rozalin's CatchPhrase in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 2|CursedMemories}}'' (and Adell is just as quick to deny it too). [[BelligerentSexualTension They fail to fool anyone]].
--> '''[[GenreSavvy Etna]]''': Awww, you have one of ''those'' kinds of relationships!
** And in the good ending, [[spoiler: when she starts turning into an EldritchAbomination, he ''[[CoolDownHug snogs her back to normal]]'']].
** By ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|A Promise Unforgotten}}'', most characters skip the girlfriend/boyfriend step and assume that they're already married.
--->'''Adell:''' We're not married! Just because [[InnocentCohabitation we live under the same roof]]...
--->'''Rozalin:''' Adell! This is not the time to mention that!
** There's also Prince Laharl, who will actively deny that there's anything between him and his vassal Etna. Or his live-in angel Flonne. This is in spite of him spending an awful lot of time around them and being very comfortable with them (he has a strong aversion to women with... developed bodies, and both of them are {{Pettanko}}). Jennifer is absolutely convinced that there's something going on between them.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Sam and Max|FreelancePolice}}'' Episode 201, Sybil and Abe Lincoln were not dating... up until Max begins insisting that the meeting is something absolutely crazy.
* Played with in ''VideoGame/DevilSurvivor''. When first speaking to Gin, he asks who the player is. The player can either say their name or "[[TheChick Yuzu's]] boyfriend". If the player chooses the "other" option, Yuzu [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial gets very shocked]].
** She has a similar reaction later, when [[TheLancer Atsuro]] jokes that Haru might be her competition for the protagonist's affections.
** The same thing happens to Yuzu's ''VideoGame/DevilSurvivor2'' counterpart, Io. During a Fate Event in which Io is trying to talk a boy out of suicide, the player can choose to introduce himself as her boyfriend. She of course denies it but, being a fairly bashful character, is more flustered than anything and decides to take it as a joke, as the player character apparently likes to joke a lot.
* Makes an appearance in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 3}} Portable'' when playing as a female main character. If attending the Summer Festival with Akihiko, a takoyaki vendor will ask if she is his girlfriend, prompting him to stutter an angry denial. It's as if the idea had crossed his mind before... This also happens frequently with femele protagonist and [[PlatonicLifePartners Junpei]].
** The Summer Festival example can occur in the male protagonist route too. Notably, if you go with Yukari, [[StoryBranchFavoritism she doesn't deny it, even if you haven't started a romance with her yet.]]
* This is invoked in ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn]]'' when Ike asks Haar why Jill isn't with him. Haar denies anything beyond friendship towards Jill. Two chapters after this base conversation, Haar can recruit Jill into the Greil Mercenaries. Of course, if Haar and Jill get an A-Rank support formed, the ending will imply a marriage between the two without actually saying anything specific.
-->'''Haar:''' She is simply the daughter of my dead teacher. Nothing more.
* In ''Franchise/DeadOrAlive Dimensions'', some characters ask this question about [[VideoGame/NinjaGaiden Ryu Hayabusa]] and Irene, prompting him to deny it.
* ''VideoGame/ArTonelico2''. Cloche would like you to know that Croix is her dog and bodyguard, NOTHING ELSE! The fact that she goes on dates with him is completely irrelevant.
* ''Franchise/DragonAge'':
** Makes an appearance in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins Witch Hunt'' when Ariane inquires about the exact relationship between a romanced Male Warden and Morrigan. Apparently when he thinks no one is looking, the Warden often absent-mindedly plays with the ring Morrigan gave him, causing Ariane to wonder if her knowledge of the significance of humans sharing rings is accurate.
--> '''Warden''': We are ''not'' married... [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial if that's what you are asking]].
** Returns briefly in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'', if Hawke romances Fenris and later has him in the party with Merrill. Merrill has great fun teasing Fenris about the "puppy eyes" he gives Hawke any time they aren't looking. He responds to her declaration that "You're in love!" with a very flat "I am not," which is interesting because if anyone else brings it up to him, he has no difficulty acknowledging it.
--> '''Fenris:''' There are ''no'' puppy eyes.
* In ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'', EDI and Joker strenuously deny they've been flirting. The entire crew of the ''Normandy'' aren't convinced. They basically give up all pretense by the time ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'' rolls in.
* In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'', Tifa says this to Aerith about Cloud.
* In ''VideoGame/BlazBlue'', [[FieryRedhead Tsubaki]] has a crush on [[TallDarkAndSnarky Jin]], but tries to downplay it whenever pressed, usually going into this trope. [[LittleBitBeastly Makoto]] is quick to point out that [[EveryoneCanSeeIt she's not fooling anyone]], [[StreetSmart least of all her]].
* ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}:''
** During the later ranks of her social link, Yukiko tells the [[PlayerCharacter Protagonist]] that they have been spending so much time together that the staff at her family's inn assumes that he is her boyfriend. She denies it, of course, but by then it's pretty clear that she ''really'' wants to be proven wrong, the sooner the better.
** Chie and Yosuke. Kanji at first assumes they are a couple, much to Chie's annoyance. Incidentally, if Chie is the [[PlayerCharacter Protagonist's]]romantic partner and date to the Summer Festival, she has this as a knee jerk reaction to a vendor calling him her boyfriend, only to realize that it is, in fact, true.
* Double subverted in ''VideoGame/AVeryLongRopeToTheTopOfTheSky''. Yvette constantly insinuates that Gainer and Luca are in love, but Gainer deflects the accusations quite convincingly--no over-the-top denials or excessive exclamation points. We also see that they've comfortably stayed JustFriends for quite a while, and [[IntergenerationalFriendship Luca's quite a bit older than him anyway]]. Then in one of the NewGamePlus MultipleEndings, he uses [[spoiler:Ubiquity's simulation]] to create a fawning clone of her and lives out a fantasy of happy, married domesticity with it, implying he does have romantic feelings for her after all.
* In ''VideoGame/GravityFallsLegendOfTheGnomeGemulets'', Dipper and Pacifica seem to deny that their hug from the episode "[[Recap/GravityFallsS2E10NorthwestMansionMystery Northwest Mansion Mystery]]" ever happened. Mabel sounds like [[ShipperOnDeck she knows otherwise]].

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* ''Franchise/AceAttorney'':
%%** In the ''Phoenix Wright'' manga collection, Pearl asks Phoenix about his relationship with Maya, and is met with five Psyche-locks, which within the games, signify a secret that is as well-guarded as possible.
** Gumshoe outright uses this line for defense, as well, with regards to [[{{Dojikko}} Maggey Byrde]]. Phoenix doesn't buy it for a moment.
--->'''Phoenix:''' (Note to self: Gossip with Maya about this later!)
** Apollo has this reaction in ''[[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyDualDestinies Dual Destinies]]'' when Klavier assumes Athena is his girlfriend.
* Everyone seems to be under the impression that Toko and Reiji have some kind of relationship in ''VisualNovel/KaraNoShoujo.'' Rather than being defensive about it, Reiji is mostly bemused.
* Yamato in ''VisualNovel/MajiDeWatashiNiKoiShinasai'', regarding Miyako, all the time--though he's [[JustFriends actually got a reason to do so]]. Except, of course, in her path, where he comes around rather quickly once he's made his decision. There are also choices in the game where, if you actually say she ''is'' your girlfriend, you'll immediately end up in an ending with her, whether you were joking or not.
* Rin Tohsaka in ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' can get like this. Especially prevalent in one scene in "Unlimited Blade Works", where Shirou can warn Lancer to stay away from Tohsaka, to which she keeps desperately denying that she and Shirou are in love, while Shirou just smirks and doesn't deny anything, and Lancer laughs his ass off at Rin's reaction.
-->'''Rin''': Why are you not saying anything? This is looking as if we actually are in love!
-->'''Lancer''': (laughing) Please. There's no "as if" about it!
* In ''Higurashi Daybreak'', the ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'' fighting game, when you're playing Story Mode as a Keiichi-Rena team, most of the adults will ask if you're a couple. Rena is delighted at the notion, but Keiichi protests. This actually becomes the stakes for the last two battles, thanks to a LoveTriangle with Mion at her most {{Tsundere}}.

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* Mike and Lucy in ''Webcomic/BittersweetCandyBowl'', during the old series.
* ''Webcomic/DragonTails''. No matter how upset he gets when he learns that she's taken quite a liking to a French gargoyle named Jacques, Lemuel stubbornly insists that his penpal Firewing is not his girlfriend.
* Agatha Heterodyne in ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'' gets steamed if anyone [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20050511 suggests]] she and Gilgamesh Wulfenbach are lovers... at first. Later she just stammers [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20071119 flustered denials]] (usually to someone who would respond to screaming with a BootToTheHead). Her {{fangirl}}ing over his DeathRay working is ''entirely'' beside the point. Really.
** Inverted earlier, when she's pretending to be someone's girlfriend, and has to stop herself from giving it away. [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20030620 "I NEVER! He's nnn-" "…'nnn'? As in NNNOT your boyfriend?" "...as in 'nice.' He's really nice."]]
** Abner starts to say this, but is [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20050117 corrected]] by Pix with a smooch.
** Agatha [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20090417 rants about this as she casually takes care of Castle Heterodyne's various defenses]], which actually leads to it asking her to turn her death ray down.
** Violetta learns the dangers of it [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20091021 here]].
** Airman Axel Higgs steadfastly denies that he cares about Zeetha.
--> '''Higgs''': Uh--she--she ain't ''my'' Miss Zeetha, sir.
-->'''Tarvek''': Oh, [[SarcasmMode heaven forbid]]. I'm sure you'd desert your post and hare off to save ''any'' green-haired amazon.
** And of course parodied between Agatha and Moloch Von Zinzer, only the relationship in question is "minion".
-->'''Tarvek''': You really are the best minion ''ever''.
--> '''Moloch''': I am ''not'' her ''minion!''.
* Used by Ash in ''Webcomic/{{Misfile}}'' [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=405 here]], not even [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=420 she believes that]] though.
** Inverted later on, with an example of "''[[http://www.misfile.com/?page=1212 you]]'' are not my girlfriend".
* [[ChivalrousPervert Konstantin]] with [[CatGirl Anya]] in ''[[Webcomic/TsunamiChannel Experimental Comic Kotone]]''. See [[http://www.tsunamichannel.com/index.php?date=2002-09-27&comic=ExCoKo here.]]
* Played with in ''Webcomic/FriendlyHostility'': Fox normally has no problem in referring to Collin as his boyfriend, but when Collin shows up while his coworker Derringer is pestering him about becoming buddies, he quickly rushes to loudly introduce him to Derringer as his "BEST FRIEND". Collin just as quickly walks off before he gets mad enough to do something he'll regret.
* Issac and Joy in ''Webcomic/NamirDeiter'', though it's only by mutual agreement (and a boatload of issues) that they're not.
** Except they've recently been upgraded to Beta/Tertiary couple, after an argument while on a double-date (with different people).
* Shadehawk and Crossroad in ''Webcomic/AntiheroForHire'', though with all the {{U|nresolvedSexualTension}}ST between them, some feel it's only a matter of time. The most notable example is [[http://www.antiheroforhire.com/d/20080505.html here]]:
-->'''Hector:''' Looks like your girlfriend's coming to the party.\\
'''Shadehawk:''' Ugh. You are such a depraved monster. Insinuating that she's my girlfriend, I mean.
* In ''Webcomic/TheInexplicableAdventuresOfBob'', Bob frequently has to reiterate to his girlfriend Jean that there is nothing between him and the alien Princess Voluptua. Despite the fact that they have kissed. And that Voluptua is now stationed in Earth's solar system. And that she is a {{Stripperiffic}}ally-clad HelloNurse of the first order. [[spoiler:Because Bob knows that she is in fact, under her disguise, a giant alien ''bug.'']]
* Boris, the robotic spider in ''Bugs'', has shouted more than once that a real spider with a keen interest in him is not his girlfriend.
* Zoe from ''Webcomic/SluggyFreelance'' invokes this trope after several of her friends [[http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=080930 hold an intervention]] for her because they think she's dating Torg.
* Kitti and Sky in ''Webcomic/DividedSky'' are both in denial of their feelings for each other, despite everyone else picking it up.
* A customer in ''Webcomic/WelcomeToTheConvenienceStore'', when asked about his female friend, said she was a "friendly woman person".
* [[http://www.shapequest.net/?id=113 Lance says this about Silvia]] in ''[[http://www.shapequest.net Shape Quest]]''.
* ''Webcomic/{{xkcd}}'' demonstrates that this retort can be [[http://xkcd.com/539/ defeated by statistics]]
* ''Webcomic/SequentialArt'' give us Art and Kat's reaction to the suggestion they are [[http://www.collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.php?s=404 a couple]]. The next strip [[FemaleGaze shows more]].
* In ''Webcomic/GunnerkriggCourt'' [[http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=741 Zimmy]] offhandedly refers to Jack as Antimony's boyfriend after she [[spoiler:restores his sanity]] and explains what happened leading up to it. Antimony thanks her, but adds "Also; not my boyfriend." This sets up the latter ShipTease in [[http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=797 this strip]]. Maybe because after [[JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind this adventure]] Two Strange Girls already knew [[RescueRomance his attitude]].
** However, in the short term at least, this turns out to be true. Jack has a crush on Zimmy of all people, and Annie, at the time of making the aforementioned statement, held a hidden grudge against Jack. They're likely in for more teasing of that sort now, though, considering that as far as their classmates are concerned [[http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=694 Jack publicly gave Annie a note]] and some of them saw them amiably chatting then going off on their own for a night. Of course, there's a nonromantic explanation for those, but others don't know that.
* Liu Wong and Fang Lin in ''Webcomic/HowIKilledYourMaster''.
* ''Webcomic/FarOutThere'' had Trigger and Layla both respond [[http://faroutthere.smackjeeves.com/comics/1027274/page-28-i-dont-think-thats-very-funny-at-all in this manner]] when Ichabod suggested they were a couple. [[LikeBrotherAndSister They actually mean it]].
** Then it happened [[http://faroutthere.smackjeeves.com/comics/1090281/page-302-well-that-was-almost-romantic/ again]]. Unfortunately, it was Trigger's crush who though he and Layla were an item.
* When Lemon and Lime first meet Alice in [[http://evilplan.thewebcomic.com Evil Plan]]'' they immediately that she's Kinesis' girlfriend. Alice's words say no, but her expressions says [[http://evilplan.thewebcomic.com/comics/367192/dont-assume-that/ differently.]]
* ''Webcomic/GeneralProtectionFault'' has Patty [[http://www.gpf-comics.com/archive.php?d=20101011 laying it on a bit too thick]] about her not-boyfriend:
-->'''Dwayne''': That was quite an adventure you guys had. How's Dexter?\\
'''Patty''': Argh! Not you too! Look, we are ''not'' dating! We made peace! That's it! Not seeing each other, not dating, not engaged, not getting married, not breeding! "Friends" is pushing the definition! We just aren't fighting anymore!
* Several people in ''Webcomic/QuestionableContent'' refer to Angus as Faye's boyfriend or something similar before they are officially an item, but have admitted their mutual attraction. Faye denies this.
* Justin of ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'' insists vehemently that Elliot is not his boyfriend. [[SubvertedTrope He's telling the truth]]--Elliot is already taken and it [[IncompatibleOrientation wouldn't work out anyway]].
** The ''Summer'' arch had Susan stating that Eliot isn't her boyfriend to a number of people when he decides to take a job at the same video store as her. Time will tell how this will go though.
** After the time skip to ''End Of An Era Part 2'', it's become obvious that the two have become much closer and are mutually attracted. [[http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2013-04-23 They've even specifically denied being a couple in several of their video reviews.]]
* The eponymous ''Webcomic/{{Sarab}}'' say this about Karin. In front of her. She does not take it well.
* In ''Webcomic/BlueYonder'', Lena's saying this produces a rather different effect, [[http://www.blueyondercomic.net/comics/1316065/blue-yonder-chapter-1-page-31/ as she faces him down for claiming it.]]
* In ''Webcomic/EarsForElves'', Donny sees Tanna walking arm-in-arm with Rolan. Donny infers that Rolan must be her boyfriend, and finds this disgusting; Tanna [[http://www.earsforelves.com/archives/490 protests madly]]. [[http://www.earsforelves.com/archives/528 A while later]], Donny tells Tanna that her new boyfriend isn't so bad after all; her reaction is to say that Rolan is not her boyfriend.
* In one story arc for ''Cheer!'', Lita forces Alex (who is a girl, yes) to take her out to dinner to a steak house. She also forces Alex to go to the dinner wearing a nice suit. Cue Alex spending most of the evening telling the restaurant staff that she is ''not'' Lita's date and ''not'' a "sir".
* In ''Webcomic/{{Footloose}}'', Jenny refers to Keti as Dan's girlfriend - she, Dan, and Iordan insist she isn't in unison, Keti and Dan being genuinely {{Squick}}ed by the idea, and Iordan having a vested interest in Keti being single.
* In ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'', Terezi seems to inspire a lot of this. Karkat repeatedly denies having a "thing" with her when numerous other characters [[EveryoneCanSeeIt notice their bond]], and Dave denies dating her when Karkat starts [[TriangRelations getting jealous]].
* As far as Lisa and Ally of ''Webcomic/{{Sunstone}}'' are concerned; she is just the woman I live with, have lots of kinky sexy with, and spend most of my time with. This delusion is upheld by the characters so they don't have to question whether they are homoromantic or if the other reciprocates; but all their closer friends can see through it.
* ''Webcomic/{{Rhapsodies}}'' Paul and Nancy [[http://rhapsodies.wpmorse.com/comic/love/ insist]] they are JustFriends... [[FriendsWithBenefits good friends]]
* In ''Webcomic/{{Housepets}}'', Zach uses this line when found in a [[http://www.housepetscomic.com/2014/11/26/no-time-for-playing/ compromising position]] with the wild possum Jess. In defiance of how the trope usually goes, she interrupts him and completely ignores the accusation; they're in a crisis situation. [[RelationshipUpgrade But a few hours later...]]
* In ''Webcomic/{{Avialae}}'', every relative that sees Gannet and Bailey together assume that they're dating. This is not helped by Gannet's complicated hang-ups with relationships making him fine with doing everything with Bailey ''but'' calling their outings together "[[NotADate dates]]".
-->'''Gannet:''' They think we're dating. This isn't going to help.
-->'''Bailey:''' And we're not?
-->'''Gannet:''' ''No.''

[[folder:Web Original]]
* In ''WebVideo/TheGuild'', Codex insists that "there is no circumstance under which [she and Zaboo] are together in any shape or form". [[StalkerWithACrush Zaboo]] feels differently.
* Simon from ''Literature/ShadowOfTheTemplar'' takes this to new heights when he tells Jeremy that he's not even his friend despite them being familiar with each other in the horizontal position. [[spoiler:He ''does'' answer "maybe" instead of denying the possibility outright when the criminal who kidnapped Jeremy asks him if he's his boyfriend, but goes right back to denying it soon after.]] ''Then,'' when he finally overcomes enough (but not all) of his [[ObliviousToLove Selective Obliviousness]] and {{Tsundere}} issues to call Jeremy a friend, Sandra scoffs and says that they're "special friends" at the very least, to his chagrin.
* In "Thanks For The Feedback: Date With Doug," WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick denies having any attraction to WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic. It was a little too firm to be believed anyway, but lost all credibility when Doug and Lindsay confirmed later that the characters had already had sex at this point.
** She does it again (just with the word "ally" instead of "boyfriend") when Creator/MaraWilson wants to kill her to hurt him, but contradicts herself a few minutes later when they both mope about missing him.

* In ''Literature/StatlessAndTactless'' Joe is convinced that Soo and Ian are dating because they occasionally allude to meeting offline. Any incident involving such an event getting mentioned invariably leads to the group getting sidetracked to refute it.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In the "Bro-Down Showdown" episode of ''WesternAnimation/SonicBoom'', Eggman refers to Amy as Sonic's girlfriend. Sonic denies it, but the game show they're both on indicates a wrong answer. Technically, it was because Sonic and Eggman's answers didn't match, but the timing of the "wrong answer" light is still very suspect.
-->'''Eggman''': If you fight my robot, we'll be disqualified and you'll never win that couch for that whiny little girlfriend of yours.\\
'''Sonic''': She's not my girlfriend!\\
''(the game show light indicates Sonic's answer is wrong)''
* ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'': Sam and Danny frequently insist "We're not lovebirds," even though they end up [[RelationshipUpgrade becoming just that]] in the GrandFinale.
** Also counts as ironic BookEnds. In the beginning of the first episode, they're protesting vehemently that they do not have a relationship. At the end of the last, they finally kiss.
* ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'': Robin ''really'' ticks Starfire off when he says this in the episode "Stranded". Can't really hold it against him though, as thanks to her established role as TheDitz, {{Cloudcuckoolander}}, being raised [[AliensSpeakingEnglish by aliens]], etc., he naturally assumed she didn't even know what a girlfriend was. He is sadly mistaken, as she is quick to inform him. It actually makes the current situation dangerous, as Starfire's powers depend on her emotions, and being confused makes her unable to use them; not good, seeing as they are on a planet with a hostile environment.
** That and the episode "Date With Destiny". Robin invokes the trope name, but this time, against Kitten.
** "Stranded" also gives us one of the best responses from someone who speaks broken English. Watch it [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlM06RuvCF8&t=1m20s here, starting at 1:20]]:
---> '''Starfire''': I am not your friend?\\
'''Robin''': Uh...\\
'''Starfire''': I am not a girl?
** As noted on the show's page under this trope, Robin and Starfire had actually been on kinda-"dates" before. Starfire's belief that they were in a relationship wasn't exactly unsupported.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'': Francine and Arthur simultaneously fulfill this trope in an early episode.
* ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'': In her debut episode, Nigel tells his friends this about Lizzie, who actually ''is'' his girlfriend, because he's embarrassed. After this episode, however, he stops hiding it.
** Don't forget Wallabee and Kuki (Numbuh Four and Numbuh Three).
--> '''Numbuh 4''': We're going to save her, and this time ''ItsPersonal''!
--> '''Numbuh Two and Numbuh Five''': Wally and Kuki, sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
--> '''Numbuh Four''': Shut up! It is ''not'' like that! (starts blushing) She owes me a quarter!
* ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'': Obi-Wan's response to Anakin concerning Satine.
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'':
** Zuko snaps "She is not my ''girlfriend''!" at a waiter who calls a girl ''he was on a date with'' his "girlfriend", though it's not exactly an unreasonable assumption. Oddly enough, when Jun once called an archenemy his "girlfriend" a season earlier, he barely even reacted.
** Although they reacted far more strongly to Jun's accusation in the finale.
-->'''Jun:''' I see you worked things out with your girlfriend.\\
'''Zuko:''' She's not my girlfriend!\\
'''Katara:''' ''(simultaneously)'' I'm not his girlfriend!
** Also in the second episode:
-->'''Sokka:''' ''(referring to Aang)'' We're going to save your boyfriend.\\
'''Katara:''' He's not my…\\
'''Sokka:''' Whatever.
*** French version of the above:
-->'''Katara:''' He's not my boyfriend.\\
'''Sokka:''' Not yet.
** Also happens when Toph meets Jet for the first time (not having joined the group until after his first appearance):
-->'''Toph:''' Was this guy your boyfriend or something?\\
'''Katara:''' ''What?!'' [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys NO!]]\\
'''Toph:''' (''singsong'') [[LivingLieDetector I can tell you're lying…]]
* SequelSeries ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' continues the tradition in the episode "A Leaf in the Wind," when [[FictionalSport pro-bender]] and TheCharmer Bolin decides to lie to his gym-owner to let his new acquaintance Korra backstage:
-->'''Bolin:''' So, you see, we're together…\\
'''Korra:''' Well, not ''together''-together, more like friends.\\
'''Bolin:''' Right, ''friends''… no, no, I didn't mean to imply…\\
'''Korra:''' Oh, you implied it.
** Though this is somewhat PlayedWith, because while Bolin winds up falling for Korra, she [[SiblingTriangle falls for his brother]] instead.
* Played with in a late third season episode of ''WesternAnimation/KimPossible'', close to TheMovie and its RelationshipUpgrade angst bomb.
** ''The WesternAnimation/KimPossible Files'', a scrapbook published between the show's first two seasons, also has Kim denying the idea of her and Ron as a couple.
** Also surfaces between Drakken and Shego in the GrandFinale.
** And Monkey Fist also states this about [=DNAmy=] in "Gorilla Fist".
** The page quote from the third season's "Overdue" is particularly funny, because Ron says it out of nowhere.
** Really like with ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'', this show seems to have set a record for invoking this in the first episode. Only Ron said it into a megaphone...''while trying to get a date''.
--->'''Ron''': Contrary to popular belief, I am not dating Kim Possible.
* Used in one episode of ''WesternAnimation/WolverineAndTheXMen'' where Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch are kidnapped and trapped in a huge dome with woods inside, which is being watched by the BigBad… [[Film/TheHungerGames gee, that sound familiar…]]
--> '''Voice''' …and Nightcrawler tries to save the love of his life!\\
'''Nightcrawler''' She's not the love of my life…!\\
''[Awkward Silence]''
* The sentence on its own isn't even enough for Jenny in Sheldon's first appearance on ''WesternAnimation/MyLifeAsATeenageRobot'':
-->'''Jenny:''' Okay... listen up, because I'm only gonna say this once: Sheldon is '''''not''''' my boyfriend! I don't even know him! He's just some crazy, loser, stalker geek! He's not my boyfriend, he's not my friend, he's not my ''anything''!
** And Sheldon heard the whole thing. ''Ouch.''
*** It was bad enough that even the ''villains'' of the episode felt sorry for the guy.
* Said by Mac in the first episode of ''WesternAnimation/FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends'' featuring Goo. This was said not only due to Mac being eight years old and embarrassed, but also because it was true, and Goo was being a real pest to everyone. Naturally, no one believes him.
** Goo, who was [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} living in her own little world]] at the time, probably never even suspected that anyone (let alone ''everyone'') thought she was Mac's girlfriend.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Chowder}}'': the episode "Chowder's Girlfriend" was devoted to Chowder trying to convince Panini that ''he's not her boyfriend!'' Since that episode, he yells that at her if she so much as says "Hi!" to him.
** Oddly, most likely due to serialized series and a tendency to be aired "out of order", it's his response to her in the first aired episode as well.
** Even more strangely, at the end of the series [[spoiler: Chowder is married to her... or so Panini would lead the audience to believe.]]
* Tommy from ''WesternAnimation/RobotBoy'' doesn't like it when people call Lola his girlfriend.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/Ben10AlienForce'' episode "Plumber's Helpers", when Helen calls Kevin Gwen's boyfriend, she angrily denies it... despite the fact that a few episodes earlier, she was complaining that Kevin wasn't asking her out.
** Happens earlier in the series, too, in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", though not as drawn-out. Gwen lets Ben and Kevin climb into her room through the window, and her father asks if he's her boyfriend. They both quickly reply "No!" and Gwen blushes.
** In another episode, Ben simply asks her ''where Kevin is'', and Gwen launches into a full-blown rant about how he isn't her boyfriend.
* In ''WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko'', Yumi and Ulrich frequently state these kinds of denial, mostly spurred by Odd's innuendos or, in Yumi's case, her brother Hiroki's hounding. Yumi also says "He's not my boyfriend" about William, but in this case it is genuine, especially once he becomes an [[SixthRangerTraitor enemy]].
** Yumi manages to ''invert'', then play the trope straight, in just one line:
--> '''Yumi:''' Yeah? Well, it's not the same thing. I'm Ulrich's [[FreudianSlip girlfriend]]! I mean, I'm--I'm his good friend.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''
** Inverted in "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS4E15ILoveLisa I Love Lisa]]". Lisa Simpson to Ralph Wiggum. On a date. On live television. Preceded by a BigNo.
-->'''Bart:''' You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half!
** In the ''WesternAnimation/TreehouseOfHorror'' segment "The Fright to Creep and Scare Arms", Lisa reads the tombstone of Billy the Kid.
--> '''Lisa:''' 'I dream of a world without guns.' Don't we all, William?
-->'''Bart:''' Lisa has a dead boyfriend!
-->'''Lisa:''' He's not my dead boyfriend! He's a dead boy that happens to be my friend.
** Hilariously played with in "He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs", when Bart teases Homer about his appointment with Mr. Burns.
-->'''Bart:''' Hey Dad! Have fun with your boyfriend!
-->'''Homer:''' HE'S NOT MY BOYFRIEND!
* ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama''
** Courtney and Duncan.
** There's one between [[spoiler: Heather]] and [[spoiler: Alejandro]] shockingly. By the later episodes [[EveryoneCanSeeIt Chris and Duncan]] tease them about it.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheGrimAdventuresOfBillyAndMandy'':
-->'''Billy:''' ''(talking to Grim)'' '''She's not my girlfriend!''' I mean, she just happens to be a girl, who just happens to be my friend, just like I happen to be a boy, and you happen to be a ''skeleton''.
** For the record, he was referring to Mandy.
* Franchise/{{Batman}}, in one of his ''very'' rare flustered moments in ''[[WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague Justice League: Unlimited]]'', insists that his relationship with Franchise/WonderWoman is purely professional. It is then that he realizes that she's [[RightBehindMe right behind him.]]
** And in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold'', he acts the same way towards [[DatingCatwoman Catwoman]]. "My interest in her is solely about [[IsThatWhatTheyreCallingItNow rehabilitation]]." By the end of the battle, she's slipped him her phone number.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfJimmyNeutron'', Sheen desperately tries to make Libby hook up with him, but she tells him to "slow down" a bit.
* An episode of ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'' had a group of aliens mistaking Vicky for Timmy's girlfriend. Naturally, Timmy is repulsed by the idea.
* Done in the first episode of season 3 in ''WesternAnimation/AtomicBetty.'' When Betty finds out her best friend Noah has been kidnapped, Sparky makes a quip about going to save her "boyfriend," which prompts her to respond with this trope. Also comes with the obligatory ShipTease during the rescue of someone they think is Noah (but is actually a disguised infiltrator).
-->'''Sparky:''' "He's not her boyfriend." Yeah right! ''(turns to X-5)'' Would you kick that much booty if that were me dangling up there?
* A twist in ''WesternAnimation/{{WITCH}}'': Irma initially can't stand geeky Martin, but an unintentional romantic moment between them leads him to spread the word around that they're dating. Eventually Irma does develop feelings for Martin, but by then has publicly humiliated him and won't actually make a move. When BigBad Nerissa comes to school disguised as the hot new girl and casts a love spell on all the boys, Irma has to adamantly remind ''herself'' that Martin isn't her boyfriend and she has no right to get mad at him for fawning over Nerissa.
* Hilariously played in a HoYay situation by Ren in ''WesternAnimation/{{The Ren and Stimpy|Show}} Adult Party Cartoon'' episode "Ren Seeks Help". Ren decides to go to a psychologist and speak about his problems with controlling anger and thus his psychical and physical abuse of Stimpy. He starts with his childhood, [[AllPsychologyIsFreudian naturally]], and when he gets to the point of meeting Stimpy, he says a few words and then promptly stops.
-->'''Mr. Horse:''' ''(psychologist)'' Um... this Stimpy fellow. Do you love him?\\
'''Ren:''' [[BerserkButton NO! DON'T SPEAK TO ME OF LOVE!]]\\
'''Ren:''' Anyway, it's not like that! [[JustFriends Stimpy is my friend.]] [[BlatantLies Just a friend!]]
* Oddly averted in ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'': Leela wakes up from a dream about Fry (after the latter died), to find his jacket draped over her shoulders. She triumphantly yells "He's alive! HE'S ALIVE!", prompting her neighbor to yell through the wall "Shut up! My boyfriend's alive too!" Although Leela has been rejecting Fry's advances (and in obvious denial) for over two seasons by now, at the moment she's too ecstatic to remember that he's not supposed to be her boyfriend.
* Patrick had to go undercover (because he thinks someone is going to kick him out of town), so he dressed up as "Patricia". WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants had to tell a few folks "she" wasn't his GF.
* The WesternAnimation series of ''WesternAnimation/EarthwormJim'' is an inversion of this, where the eponymous mutated annelid insists that the ActionGirl Princess Whats-Her-Name (a CuteMonsterGirl who is basically an alien bug) is his girlfriend, even though nobody else around seems to think they're together. This includes the Princess herself.
** Jim laughs at this.
* On ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}},'' the title character kept saying this about her [[GirlOfTheWeek guy of the week]], [[HomeschooledKids Ted]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2012'', Michaelangelo ribs Donatello about his obvious crush on April, and Donnie responds with this remark.
** Then in "Monkey Brains", there's this exchange:
-->'''Raph:''' *''Laughing''* You got beaten up... by a monkey... in front of your girlfriend!?
-->'''Donnie:''' She's not my girlfriend!
* On ''WesternAnimation/SymBionicTitan'', Octus says these exact words to Lance and Ilana after they catch him with Kimmy. Of course, they kiss and start dating shortly afterward. Also, Lance and Ilana, who are masquerading as siblings, are asked this by their NosyNeighbor Barb. Ilana calmly states he's her brother upon first meeting her. However, they play this trope a bit straight when Siefert refers to Ilana as Lance's "lady."
-->'''Lance:''' [simultaneously] We're just friends!
-->'''Ilana:''' [simultaneously] He's my brother!
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretSaturdays'': A large chunk of the dialogue in "Curse of the Stolen Tiger" is devoted to Zak denying that he has a crush on Wadi.
* On ''Literature/{{Franklin}}'', this happens with the title character and Beaver's cousin Betty in "Franklin and Betty." They really are just friends, and though the ribbing causes Franklin to briefly break off the friendship, the story ends with Franklin (with some prodding from Bear) deciding that it's okay to play with Betty, regardless of what anyone else thinks. As for Beaver, she's thrilled, as she was becoming annoyed by Betty's moping. This also comes up with Samantha in ''Franklin and the Turtle Lake Treasure'', though by the end of the film, they definitely seem to be in PuppyLove.
* Oddly subverted in the ''WesternAnimation/{{Beetlejuice}}'' cartoon. Over the course of the series, the title character and his best friend encounter a number of characters who misinterpret the nature of their relationship, sometimes explicitly referring to her as his girlfriend. Neither one ever bothers to correct the misconception; then again, WordOfGod has indicated that it might not ''be'' [[GhostShipping a misconception]].
* ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnold'':
** Harold and Big Patty shared a CommonalityConnection and they hang out together. Stinky and Sid saw them and asked Harold if Big Patty is his girlfriend which got Harold saying this trope in verbatim.
** When Helga wrote "Arnold loves Helga" on the wall, she quickly erases her name and put Lila on it because her classmates including Lila are coming her way. This cause them to think Arnold has a crush on Lila which got her to ask him about it. Arnold denied that he had feelings for her until he really does which is ''after'' they stopped hanging out.
* ''WesternAnimation/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil'' has Star and Marco occasionally get their close friendship mistaken for this when they actually have crushes on other characters (Star with [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Oskar]] and Marco with [[UptightLovesWild Jackie Lynn-Thomas]]), leading to this line being uttered by either character.
* Happened once on an episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Kaeloo}}'', when Stumpy asks Kaeloo to [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar make babies with Mr. Cat]].
-->'''Kaeloo:''' Mr. Cat is not my lover[[note]]He does have a crush on her, but it isn't clear whether she likes him back or not[[/note]]!
* ''WesternAnimation/VoltronLegendaryDefender'': In "Taking Flight", Hunk gets defensive when Pidge teases him about wanting to rescue Shay, the Balmeran girl who helped him and Coran out in "Tears of the Balmera".
-->'''Hunk:''' She's not my girlfriend! She's just a rock that I met and admire very much.
