Rape can be a profoundly horrifying experience; affecting the victim, [[AttemptedRape potential victim]], witness, even [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone the rapist themselves]]. Effects on mental health can trigger or exacerbate disorders like depression and/or SanitySlippage. The event can be traumatic enough that the person never recovers. This is typically used as a subtrope of RapeAsDrama or RapeAsBackstory, to justify a character's attitudes/behaviours. Because of the sensitive subject [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment don't opine on how accurate the fictional portrayal is.]] FridgeHorror and DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything can come into play here if a situation features a character getting approached/handled in a rough manner in a way that sets them off or makes them feel like they have been violated when they may not have been. Some characters will deliberately act violent to someone as a way to deliberately trigger them in a mind game situation.

This reaction can be TruthInTelevision, but not one of the OmnipresentTropes. No two people react to a traumatic experience in exactly the same way, even when exposed to the same trauma and there is no "right way" to cope. Professional counseling is advised regardless of how well they react to the initial trauma because the right therapist can prevent lingering issues from festering and [[CharacterDevelopment developing into a mental health issue]].

This trope can also result from {{Gaslighting}} the victim -- that is, making him or her question their own recollection of the assault. If enough people question whether or not they consented, or even if there ''was'' a rape at all, this can kickstart the issues mentioned above.

* ''LightNovel/{{Sukisho}}'': In the game its revealed Sunao was raped by Aizawa and his men during his time in the lab. In the series proper Sunao clearly suffers from PTSD as a result and has abandonment issues. He even tries to stab Aizawa with scissors in a moment of insanity in the anime.
* ''Manga/{{Basilisk}}'': Kagerou was [[BrokenBird never very stable to begin with]], and [[spoiler:getting raped and brutally tortured by Tenzen drove her off the deep end completely]].
* In the ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist'' 2003 animé, it was implied that Rose was raped by Amestris soldiers. She went mute after that. [[spoiler:She does eventually get better.]]
* ''Anime/PerfectBlue'':
** Mima begins to lose her grip on reality after she is supposedly raped for a film during her new acting career. [[MindScrew Or does she get raped?]] After this scenario is shown, we hear a bell ring and a director yell "Cut!" and the movie continues into more twists and turns. Also Mima gets photographed by a borderline rapist who convinced her to get naked for him to photograph. He gets uncomfortably close to her while she's naked and takes obscene pictures of her. The risqué photo shoot is indispersed with shots of her stabbing the hell out of the photographer. Also, it's implied the stabbing was Rumi's doing.
** Zigzagged with Rumi. During Mima's implied rape scene for a movie she's filming it is at that point where [[SanitySlippage Rumi starts to lose it]] as she's watching the recording, crying hysterically. You realize that Rumi may already have been unstable and delusional but this and the risque photo shoot were the things that pushed her permanently over the edge. Or even worse, if Rumi was already delusional, she thought she was seeing herself getting raped, because she [[IJustWantToBeYou saw herself as Mima]]. It gets worse when you consider just how strongly she protested Mima doing it in the first place and how it connects with the conclusion of the Show Within a Show.
* ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'':
** Casca went mute and regressed to a childlike state after [[spoiler:a horrifying rape at the hands of her former commander turned demon god Femto]] during the Eclipse. It's also implied that she's becoming [[TheInsomniac an insomniac]] as a result. And she slaughters some men after the Eclipse who attempted to rape her. It's implied that the demons who stripped her naked during the Eclipse went further than that, as we see one sticking tentacles in her mouth as it's stripping and groping her with the others. One also tried to rape her with a spike on its head and would have succeeded if it hadn't of stopped to watch Femto being born. During these moments we see her sanity get destroyed and she retreats into herself. During later chapters when two characters get a first hand look at the horrors Casca endured during the Eclipse they are scared out of their wits.
** Guts is a more mundane/less supernatural example. He UsedToBeASweetKid, but now he's a ByronicHero with some serious issues that also HatesBeingTouched. He became this way after he was raped as a kid -- exacerbated by the fact that it came about due to betrayal by his adopted father -- and it just got worse with the Eclipse where [[spoiler:he was ForcedToWatch the above-mentioned rape in circumstances that [[MindRape all but mirrored his own traumatic childhood ordeal]]]]. Let's just say that he has all the reason in the world to want Griffith dead.
** Princess Charlotte lost it when her ''own father'' tried to rape her because she was starting to resemble her mother. This alienated her from him and when his health suffered due to the horror and guilt over what he had almost done she refused to see him on his death bed and we see her crying BrokenTears over the whole ordeal.
** It's weird that the Torture Technician never mentioned it in his graphic description of what he did to him over a year, but Griffith was probably castrated during his torture. It was probably the first thing to go, in fact, since his crime was having sex with Charlotte, so it would make sense that the instrument used to commit the crime would be the first to be destroyed. He probably didn't get there because Guts rammed his sword through him, and the door. However, by the completely depraved tone the guy spoke as he talked about Griffith and his beauty and how Griffith was made of fine material for the man to do his stuff on.. He might have also done... [[RapeAsDrama other things]] to Griffith. If the man's job was to make Griffith suffer as much as possible, sexual abuse has to be taken into account as well as physical. The implied rape as well as the other aspects of his DespairEventHorizon led to him to try to commit suicide and become irreversibly evil. Even before that Griffith prostituted himself to an old man to fund his army and he's clearly hurting something fierce afterwards showing that it wasn't wanted on his end and he scratches his arms till they bleed.
* In episode 20 of ''Anime/CrossAnge'', it turns out that this is the reason [[spoiler:Jill lost it; the original Libertus had ended in failure because Embryo raped her in both mind and body]].
* ''[[Manga/WolfGuyWolfenCrest Wolfen Crest]]'':
** Konuma Ryuuko is a nymphomaniac middle-schooler with what appears to be profound psychological damage from repeated rapes in her past, which made her a nihilistic sociopath.
** Later, Haguro tries to use gang-rape on HotTeacher Aoshika to BreakTheCutie in regards to both her and Inugami. [[spoiler:It '''almost''' worked.]]
** Haguro raped and beat Chiba out of jealousy because of Chiba talking to Inugami when Haguro wasn't around and it doesn't end pretty for him.
** Inugami gets to witness first hand as Aoshika's getting gang raped because Haguro recorded it and put it on the internet. The normally stoic wolf has full blown BrokenTears as his MaskOfSanity breaks.
* ''Manga/DeadmanWonderland'': One of the factors that made Genkaku AxCrazy was how he was raped as a teenager.
* ''[[Manga/BlackButler Black Butler II]]'':
** The most notable happens in the second season, considering Alois' whole life is a bit of Fridge Horror. After his little brother and entire village are killed, this already slightly off boy (who laughed cheerfully as he robbed the dead) begins living as a true city street rat. Knowing how things like that work out, and especially after seeing his reactions to things later on, it's quite obvious that this young boy solicited himself for food or shelter before he even hit a double digit age. Think about this: Jim is only around 11 when he goes to Earl Trancy's manor. There, he living with a bunch of boys in the same condition, being bathed and treated like cattle, all while being a sex slave to an old man. At the age of 11. It's quite obvious even then he is not a virgin, as he dolls up and puts on a beautiful red robe, seducing the old man expertly until the guy's kissing his feet. He even becomes the favorite boy, taking place for the man's son who vanished as a baby - the real Alois Trancy which allows him to take the name Alois after Claude kills the Earl. Episode 8 shows that Alois was raped by the former Lord Trancy. It's implied that this helped make him so Ax-Crazy ó he's shown to have been a little off-kilter even before the event, having joked about his entire village dying and happily looted their corpses when they actually did, but his violent tendencies seem to date from it, not to mention his compulsive promiscuity.
** Ciel is implied to have been raped in addition to [[SlaveBrand other]] [[ForceFeeding tortures]] [[TraumaCongaLine he]] [[DealWithTheDevil endured]] when being held captive by a fanatical cult. Poor Ciel who UsedToBeASweetKid becomes a ByronicHero who's greatest wish in life is to get revenge on those who caused him and his family to suffer such humiliation. In chapter 71, when Maurice rips apart Ciel's shirt with scissors, it seems indicated that this reminded Ciel of his traumatic history, as he freaks out something fierce when Maurice does this indicating fear of possible rape at the hands of Maurice and his goons. Some flashbacks Ciel had during the Ship Arc reveal that before being sacrificed, Ciel had his shirt ripped apart with a knife, cut the same way Maurice tore the shirt, indicating possible rape at the hands of the cult. This is not helped how in the opening song of season 3 we see an image of Ciel being manhandled to the ground in the past by the cultists.
* ''Manga/BlackLagoon'':
** Rape and torture is implied to have been what made [[CreepyTwins Hansel and Gretel]] so AxCrazy. Hansel and Gretel were so crazy because raping, torturing, and killing were the only ways to avoid being raped, tortured, and killed. In a horrifying (but textbook) example of operant conditioning, the constant negative reinforcement led directly to their psychotic behavior. The truly horrifying thing is that this is the natural human response.
** Revy being raped by a corrupt police officer and having an uncaring abusive dad turned her from an optimistic, religious child to a [[BrokenBird spiteful]], mood swinging, gun-crazy, [[FaithHeelTurn God-hating]], [[HiredGun gun-for-hire]] with an occasional tendency to go on psychotic rampages if not for [[LivingEmotionalCrutch Rock]].
* In ''Manga/PeacemakerKurogane'', Suzu becomes AxCrazy and a DepravedHomosexual after an old man rapes him.
* Legato Bluesummers from the ''Manga/{{Trigun}}'' manga is shown to have been raped (possibly numerous times) by the town mayor, or something like a mayor. As you might guess, he's now quite AxCrazy.
* ''Manga/FutureDiary'': [[spoiler:[[BrokenBird Tsubaki Kasugano - The 6th]] was kept as a mix of SexSlave and puppet leader by a ReligionOfEvil.]]
* In ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'':
** [[spoiler:Alucard, aka Vlad Tepes Dracul of Wallachia]] was sexually abused as a child during his time spent as a political hostage for his father under the Ottoman Empire by the sultan. Currently, he's clearly off his rocker.
** Seras is a cute vampire girl who gets embarrassed when Alucard asks if she's a virgin, and her screaming angry and flustered towards the lecherous Pip Bernadotte and Wild Geese's "Sexual Harassment". Later, we learn that Zorin opened up her memories and revealed that her mother's corpse was raped after she was killed right in front of Seras on the night her entire family was slaughtered. No wonder she's so uncomfortable about it. ... Also, Seras was nearly raped by a vampire in the first episode/chapter. And there's the oft-glossed-over part where she was being groped by ghouls (they also forced apart her legs) prior to going into a blood-rage as a result of her HatesBeingTouched BerserkButton being pressed in an early OVA. She also has nightmares about how she is threatened with rape attempts and two male villains and one HeroAntagonist have made rape overtures towards her.
* In ''VisualNovel/SchoolDays'', [[{{Yandere}} Kotonoha's]] mental and emotional breakdown hits her fully after she's raped by [[spoiler:her StalkerWithACrush, Makoto's best friend Taisuke.]]
* ''Manga/SakuraGari'':
** A big reason Souma is so messed up and a DepravedBisexual is because of all the rape and other trauma he endured in his past.
** Masataka himself [[DrivenToSuicide nearly splinters mentally]] after he endures being raped by Katsuragi and Souma.
* In ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', Asuka crosses the DespairEventHorizon and ends up catatonic after her MindRape. By WordOfGod we're supposed to understand that she literally gets raped. Several dubs/scanslations have her actually say "I've been raped/violated!" and "it's raping/defiling my mind/soul!" as she's psychically tortured by the Angel.
* ''Manga/KazeToKiNoUta'':
** Gilbert is utterly messed up from suffering rape and other kinds of trauma in his youth.
** Auguste and Rosemariné (to an extent) as well, as [[spoiler:Auguste was raped by his stepbrother and Rosemariné was raped by Auguste when Rosemariné was fifteen]].
* Hinako from ''Manga/BitterVirgin'' was traumatised by [[spoiler:years of sexual abuse]] at the hands of her stepfather. This severely messed with her mental state and caused her to develop an aversion to men and HatesBeingTouched except by Daisuke. She gets better through her relationship with Daisuke.
* In ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'', both Miaka and Yui experience rape attempts and go through BreakTheCutie.
** Nakago was made a SexSlave when he was young. This was his StartOfDarkness.
* In ''Manga/CountCain'', Augusta went insane after giving birth to her brother's ChildByRape and had to be institutionalized. When Cain, not knowing she was his mother as well as his aunt, went to visit her in secret, she freaked out and [[DrivenToSuicide threw herself out the window]]. At the end of the series, [[spoiler:we learn that this is a subversion. While Augusta really did go insane afterwards, she had been more than willing to sleep with her brother all along.]]
* ''Manga/SensualPhrase'': In the manga, Aine's raped by a high-ranked executive who had a beef against Sakuya. Poor girl nearly splinters mentally after that.
* Zigzagged all over the place in ''Manga/HaouAiren''. [[spoiler:Reilan was driven to bitterness and insanity after she gets gangraped by the mooks of her fiancé Hakuron's rival and forced into prostitution]], and she gets so broken that [[spoiler:she invokes the trope via setting her love rival Kurumi to be gangraped in front of Hakuron himself to specifically mess with the girl's mind. Even when Kurumi is rescued, Reilan uses this as a part of a ''ThanatosGambit'' as well, so she gets broken anyway -- but by the end, she gets ''somewhat'' better.]] And also, [[spoiler:Kurumi is raped ''by Hakuron himself'' in front of a newfound friend... and ''that friend'' [[GoMadFromTheRevelation is the one who goes crazy instead]], which leads him to ultimately [[TheHeroDies shoot Hakuron dead]].]]
* ''Manga/ACruelGodReigns'': In the manga, Jeremy is repeatedly raped and beaten by his step-father, Greg Roland, which [[spoiler:eventually drives him to tamper with Greg's car, killing him.]] For the rest of the series, Jeremy is haunted by images of Greg talking to him, leading him to become [[spoiler:a drug addict and a prostitute in an attempt to forget.]]
* ''Manga/AngelSanctuary'': [[spoiler:Sevotharte, a.k.a. Lailah]] was raped by jealous co-workers, which led to... [[TraumaCongaLine several]] [[DealWithTheDevil bits]] [[ANaziByAnyOtherName of]] [[MoralEventHorizon nastiness]].
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'':
** Overlaps with [[spoiler:OrphanageOfFear ''and'' BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil]] in the case of [[spoiler:Miyo Takano]] in the manga version.
** It is implied that [[spoiler: Rena's rampage in Ibaraki was sparked by a rape attempt by the three boys she injured]], [[HatePlague but there were other]] [[ParentalAbandonment contributing factors]].
* [[spoiler:Tamura]] from ''Manga/BokuraNoHentai''. He's the most unhinged [[spoiler:of the protagonists]] and displays behaviors [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior unhealthy]] for a 13 - 15 year old. It's shown he has repressed memories of a neighbor who made him crossdress and molested him as a young child.
* ''Manga/TokyoGhoul'':
** Ayu aka Nutcracker is a promiscuous scantily dressed ghoul who preys on men and women. She once ate a beautiful woman's face and has the standard attack of stomping on a man's genitals and sucking them up. It's implied Ayu either was sexually assaulted in the past, prostituted herself to get money or a mix of both, as a flashback has her thinking "I need money" when looking up at three sketchy looking guys with slasher smiles.
** Tooru Mutsuki is implied to have been raped by his father after he physically abused him by holding his head under water and leered at him, and later [[StalkerWithACrush Torso]] as well. The first event is implied to have been the reason Mutsuki decided to live as a male and is why he finds MaleGaze to be disgusting. The second event makes him break down in tears and believe that he's cursed because of him being taken advantage of by men in his life, namely his father and Torso. Both of the implied rapes make Mutsuki snap and causes him to [[spoiler: kill his father, his family, and brutally maim and kill Torso in revenge. His maiming of animals and keeping a collection of their tongues while tearfully denying and repressing all these memories is also implied to be a result of the trauma of physical and sexual abuse by his father and the murder he did of his own family and his own twisted way of coping]] Also, he has scars on his breast and in chapter 13 the words "rape" "rape" "rape" "a woman" come to his head when men give him the MaleGaze in a club. After both sexual assaults Mutsuki succumbs to full on AxCrazy-ness.
** In one scene we see Big Madam fingering Juuzou's mouth while talking about how pretty her "Rei-chan" is and then reaching down to grope his genitals beneath his dress prior to [[GroinAttack castrating him with a hammer]]. It's his past, combined with sexual assault as well as physical abuse and torture that made Juuzou lose his sanity, though he gets better with [[LivingEmotionalCrutch Shinohara's influence]].
** Shortly after [[spoiler: Seidou's ghoul surgery]], Dr. Kanou visits him and mentions that when he comes back later, he'll be collecting various samples...including semen which is implied he'll acquire through forced ejaculation. The scene fades there, leaving that piece of the experimentation to the audience's imagination. The horrors he experienced of the ghoul world as a human as well as the torture Kanou put him through made him [[AxCrazy who he is today]].
** The above implies Kanou did the same to Kaneki when he made him into a half ghoul and there's also the implication that Yamori assaulted him sexually or possibly castrating him in addition to torturing him by putting a centipede in his ear which Yamori describes it as a "violation" and repeatedly cutting off his fingers and toes. It's no surprise he becomes a cold merciless AntiHero.
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'': When Aizen has Orihime kidnapped, Orihime is subjected to psychological conditioning, mental torture, implied rape threats, physical abuse and being forced to watch Ichigo have a hole ripped through his chest, Uryuu having his arm diced off and the enemy being completely untouched. All of this culminates in her having a breakdown. The sexual part of Orihime's BreakTheCutie is more blatantly in the manga, where Nnoitora not only forces her to watch as Tesla beats Ichigo bloody, but restrains her and puts his fingers up her mouth (like it was done to the above mentioned Juuzou), [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar which is actually *a kink often used in hentai and live-action Japanese porn*]]; for all effects Nnoitora was ''molesting Orihime in front of Ichigo'', and it had to be {{bowdlerize}}d in the anime by simply [[HandGagging putting his hand over her mouth.]]
* ''Manga/{{Loveless}}'': Soubi, after having been raped by his teacher as a teenager, has become an ExtremeDoormat with severe issues.
* ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'': [[spoiler: Touga]] is raped by his stepfather in the movie which makes [[DepravedBisexual all his relationships with both men and women fall into nightmare territory.]] He [[TheCasanova goes through woman like tissue paper]], [[spoiler: sleeps with Miki in a scene hinting at dubious consent in the novels]], has a close relationship with his adoptive sister Nanami, has a thing for Utena (and approaches her in the novels after his 'scene' with Miki which makes Miki worry for her), and is implied to have slept with Akio and Saionji. He also is best friends with Saionji and he deliberately acts behind the scenes to get Saionji expelled from school. The relationship between Nanami and Touga especially falls into NoYay, thanks to her sheer obsession with him and the way he emotionally manipulates her. It all reaches a head in episode 32, in which Touga suddenly tries to rape Nanami in Akio's car (which she fights off in horror) and he gets angry because if sex isn't what she wanted, then what does she want? Actually, the sheer level of bullshit he pulls on her in that episode is nightmarish in itself. That Touga's idea of family love has been so completely warped by the rape makes the entire mess between the two of them chilling, to say the least.
** And the dubious nature of the sex scene between Akio and Utena in episode 33, seeing as how she's fourteen years old and he's way older than her, and the topic of discussion. You won't be thinking of sandwiches the same way again for a good while afterwards. All the more nightmarish when you see her gasping in pain and kanji reading afterwards [[MadnessMantra "Stop it...stop it...stop it..."]]. It's like she's desperately trying to retain her sanity and sense of self and get her mind off of the dubious situation with Akio by talking about what she should make for lunch tomorrow.
** Akio's relationship with Anthy is incestuous as its revealed they're sleeping together with the implication being that he raped her before. Her past, along with the dubious nature of her sexual relationship with her own brother, and her [[FateWorseThanDeath fate to be stabbed by humanity's hatred forever]] make it obvious why she is the ExtremeDoormat BrokenBird we know today.
* ''Anime/{{Texhnolyze}}'': Onishi's secretary Michiko, by the end of the series, has been raped and abused so much by a trio of remaining Luxites that she's barely responsive and only asks to be killed.
* ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere'': Sara is made to be a SexSlave rather than a ChildSoldier and is assaulted at least once. The second time she's had enough and brutally beats her attacker to death. When she found out she was pregnant from the rape she was planning to drown herself in Zari Bars' main source of water. Not to mention trying to induce abortion by smashing a rock against her stomach.
* ''Manga/SeraphOfTheEnd'': Mito is driven to a nervous breakdown when she is nearly raped by Guren who is NotHimself from being goaded on by his demon in the novel and Shigure and Sayuri are nearly raped as well and are deeply sickened by the experience and try to kill themselves by chewing on a poison capsule to avoid being raped/killed. Saito stops them however and Guren arrives to save them. It's also implied that Ferid assaulted Mika or at least Mika's reaction to Ferid forcibly drinking blood from him is reminiscent of a rape victim especially since it gives the biter and the bitee immoral pleasure. This, along with other factors, led to his utter cold nature following becoming a vampire and hatred of all vampires and humans except for Yuu.
* ''Manga/{{Adekan}}'': Shiro and Anri by way of SoBeautifulItsACurse. Several people try to sell their services in prostitution and both were made sex slaves in their youth. Not to mention the innaproriate touching by people who find them attractive be they [[EvenTheGuysWantHim man or man]]. Both have knowledge of how to seduce people or using their beauty to get what they want. It's implied a past of sexual assault and other hardships led to Anri becoming a psycho and Shiro to be as closed off emotionally and merciless when fighting as he is. Also a side male character went through numerous BreakTheCutie hardships one which included Anri going through the motions of attempting to rape him. All of this splinters him mentally.
* [[SugarAndIcePersonality Mizore Shirayuki]] from ''Manga/RosarioToVampire'' reacts [[DefiledForever this way]] to [[AmbiguouslyGay Miyabi]], [[spoiler:even though he only went as far as stealing a kiss and handling her a bit forcefully]]. Still, that alone would have been a very traumatic experience, especially since she was so emotionally fragile to begin with. She proceeds to [[DrivenToSuicide jump out of a window]], only for [[TheHeart Kurumu]] to save her in a combined CrowningMomentOfAwesome and CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming.
* ''LightNovel/StrawberryPanic'': Hikari is targeted for AttemptedRape thrice. (Twice by Kaname and once by Yaya) Both experiences terrorize her and make her withdraw into herself expressing HiddenEyes. Although Hikari forgives Yaya for her previous sexual harrassment, she's naturally still scared to get close to her after that. The way she visibly flinches around her, and Yaya's guilt ends up in her refusing to go to the Etoile competition, with Tsubomi comforting her so she won't have to be all alone.
* ''Manga/ElfenLied'': Maya. It's heavily implied in the anime, after running away from home after refusing to stay and let her step father sexually abuse her again that she was planning on committing suicide. She leaves her shoes on the shoreline and starts to wade out into the ocean, but turns back when she hears a puppy barking. Supplementary materials confirm that Mayu cannot swim. The rape also soured her attitude towards men in general but she does get better.
* It was obvious in ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' that this happened to Shouto's [[AnIcePerson mother]], who was forced to marry [[VillainWithGoodPublicity Endeavor]] and repeatedly give birth until he's got a kid with [[ComboPlatterPowers the right power combination]] (a.k.a. [[ChildByRape Shouto]]). The sheer trauma of going through such order, plus living in the same house with her rapist and seeing Shouto's face with his fire power despite still loving her son eventually caused the poor woman to snap and permanently scar the child's face with boiling water.
* ''Manga/DescendantsOfDarkness'' has the reveal of Dr. Muraki having impulsively raped thirteen-year-old Hisoka, then cursed him so that he slowly and painfully died over the course of three years as major character development for both of them. Made particularly painful by Hisoka being an empath who can feel other people's emotions especially strongly through physical contact, to the extent that Tsuzuki grabbing him when he's upset causes Hisoka to scream, making it a sort of Mind Rape too.
** Extra points for 1) the heavy implication later on that Muraki's mother molested him and 2) the possibly-accidental revelation that twelve-year-old Muraki Kazutaka looked frighteningly identical to little Hisoka. So...yeah, he was working out his own backstory issues there, too. Also he aims an incredible amount of HoYay to Tsuzuki which becomes horrifying when he reveals that he wants to revive his dead brother, put his head on Tsuzuki's body and then kill him again.
* ''Anime/{{Gankutsuou}}'': Andrea is a psychotic man into very twisted things who wants to force his half sister Eugenie to marry him but she wanted to be with Albert. Before Albert could return to Paris, Eugenie tried to leave the Danglars mansion. This unfortunately results in Andrea giving chase and sexually assaulting Eugenie, psychologically scarring her and manipulating her into staying.

* The ''Series/{{CSI}}'' fanfic "[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4828756/1/Face_The_Music Face the Music]]" by Elm22. Granted, part of Grissom's mental affliction was the torture that went with the rape, but the rape still played a big part in the problems he struggled with.
* Light in the ''Manga/DeathNote'' fanfic "Broken"
* Maka and admittedly [[spoiler:Soul]] in the ''Manga/SoulEater'' fanfiction "[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6340224/1/Scars_and_Stitches Scars and Stitches]]".
* Gamzee in {{Fanfic/Hivefled}}, sort of. There are definitely other factors involved (such as the non-sexual [[BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil torture]] that accompanied it, building up an immunity to [[FantasticDrug sopor slime]], and highbloods tending to be a little 'off' anyway), but the rape ''really'' isn't helping things.
* Averted in ''FanFic/RosarioVampireBrightestDarkness Act III''. Aside from having to be healed after taking a paralyzing hit to the spine, Tsukune walks away from getting raped by a [[DemonicPossession ghoul-infected Kokoa]] none the worse for the wear.
* This played with in ''Fanfic/Gensokyo20XX'', with Ran and Yukari at different points. According to WordOfGod, this would be a tad downplayed, as Yukari's experiences did have an effect on psyche, as some of her then mental illness did point to that. This was later elaborated on in the ''Gensokyo Diaries'', when she placed in an asylum so she could learn how to readjust and get counseling for her trauma or, as she calls it, "mental difficulties". On the note of the Ran, this subverted initially in that she was almost raped but apparently played straight after she was raped which leave her cataleptic. Later on, played straight, it becomes apparent she is suffering [[spoiler: from a form of [[https://ohl.rainn.org/online/resources/how-long-to-recover.cfm RTS]]]]
* Some [[RecursiveFanfiction fan written sequels]] for the ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'' fancomic called the "Financial Crisis Gang-Rape" will explore this, either with the victim (America) turning into an [[UpToEleven extreme]] StepfordSmiler, or just becoming flat out AxCrazy and taking bloody, violent revenge on his assailants.
* The first part of the FanFic/{{Ipseity}} series has Bucky sexually abused by his captors, which leads to him developing [[SplitPersonality DID]], along with a few other mental disorders among the other personalities.

* In the classic silent film ''Film/TheWind'', Creator/LillianGish, who is already being driven around the bend by the neverending titular wind, finally cracks completely when the bad guy rapes her.
* ''Film/AnAmericanHaunting'' claims that the Bell Witch ghost was caused by [[spoiler: John Bell molesting his daughter Betsy]].
* In ''{{Film/Centurion}}'' being raped was one of the many things that turned Etain into the sadistic Roman-hating BloodKnight she is. The others - watching her mother and sisters being raped and murdered, and having her tongue cut out.
* The sister of the {{Anti Hero}}ine in the ''Film/DirtyHarry'' sequel ''Film/SuddenImpact'' becomes catatonic after the two of them are gang-raped.
* Subverted in ''Film/TheGeneralsDaughter''. It turns out that [[spoiler:it wasn't her brutal gang rape during military school that lead to the late Elisabeth Campbell's SanitySlippage. [[ParentalBetrayal The betrayal of her General father]], who refused to investigate the crime further because he thought they wouldn't be able to apprehend the suspects and because he allowed himself to be bought out by his own superiors, was the event that broke her mind and sent her into a downward spiral]].
* In ''Film/LaPielQueHabito'', Norma's (near) rape left her in a traumatic state where she wouldn't even recognize her father anymore and which ultimately made her commit suicide.
* A variant in ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet'': Judge Turpin drugged Barker's wife and raped her. Afterwards, she [[spoiler:AttemptedSuicide, which likely gave her physical brain-damage and led to her becoming a crazy derelict]]. The insanity is still causally connected to the rape, but with an extra step in between.
* ''Film/ISpitOnYourGrave'': After Jennifer is brutally gang raped it causes her to lose it and get revenge on her attackers by horrifically torturing them to death.
* In the movie ''Film/{{Precious}}'' and the book ''Push'' it was based on the titular Precious is sexually abused by her father and is implied to have had the same thing happen to her by her mother, who also piles emotional and physical abuse on her. Precious finds a way out of her traumatic daily life by escaping into daydreams. In her mind, she has created an alternate world where she is loved and appreciated.
* ''Film/GirlWithAPearlEarring'': Griet is nearly raped by Van Ruijven and when he leaves her she is shown clenching on to her clothes he tore open looking lost and terrified beyond belief. Afterwards she's noticeably more quiet than usual.
* ''Film/RedEye'': Lisa was hinted to have been raped in the past and attacked with a knife. Jackson accosts her in a airplane bathroom presumably to trigger her. These occurrences made her firm in the belief that she would never be attacked that way again and stabs him in the neck with a pen she had stolen.
* In ''Film/ANightmareOnElmStreet3DreamWarriors'' it's revealed Freddy Krueger is a ChildByRape (his mother was raped repeatedly by inmates after being accidentally locked in a tower. When they found her she was barely alive and committed suicide as a result of Freddy later getting out of prison and the reminder of the rape.
* ''Film/TheWorldOfKanako'':
** [[spoiler:The narrator]] finally snaps after being raped by [[spoiler:the prostitution ring, and becomes violent himself]].
** This is left ambiguous with [[spoiler:Kanako]]. While one of the [[spoiler:child molesters]] claims that [[spoiler:Akikazu had sex with his daughter years ago, after which she became the evil person she is, and he]] seems to be very capable of doing it, we never see if this is really true or not.

* Averted in ''Literature/DragonBones'': No rape victim ever becomes ax-crazy, and the fact that Ward's mother is TheOphelia is not only due to (implied) marital rape, but the overall abusiveness of her husband and her own drug abuse that resulted from it. Some people behave in a seemingly irrational way, like [[spoiler: Garranon]] who is in a relationship with a man who is responsible for the murder of his father and his own rape, but apart from such isolated coping mechanisms, the characters get to keep their sanity.
* ''Literature/TheChroniclesOfThomasCovenant'' has this as a major theme. Covenant rapes a girl early in his first visit to The Land, and it haunts him throughout the ensuing stories. Part of the consequences is that Lena (the girl) definitely loses it because of the rape.
* ''Literature/TenderIsTheNight'': Nicole's sexual relationship with her father when she was a teenager (hence statutory rape) leads to her becoming schizophrenic.
* ''Literature/{{Speak}}'': The book centers around a teenager named Melinda, who's just entered the 9[[superscript:th]] grade. She's not exactly the most popular kid in school, due almost entirely to her calling the police at a WildTeenParty last summer. After the events of said party, Melinda goes from a bright, outgoing, friendly teenager to a bitter, angry, depressed one. Her grades go down the toilet, her parents are alarmed, and Melinda can't find the words to tell anyone what really happened; eventually, she [[TheVoiceless stops speaking almost entirely]]. She also self harms with a paper clip once and seems to have a form of PTSD due to the event; she sees a frog they are going to dissect being pinned down in science class and has a FreakOut as she remembers her own situation (later revealed) to be similar to the frogs. The plot mostly centers around Melinda's gradual decline, up until TheReveal of how she [[spoiler:was raped by Andy]], and then her gradual climb out of the hole.
* Nimue in ''Literature/TheWarlordChronicles'' wasn't the most stable person around to begin with, but her rape at the hands of King Gundleus pushed her over the edge. When she got over the worst trauma, she was actually grateful in a way, as a great priestess must pass through three severe trials on their path to true power according to her beliefs, and the rape counted for two of them. But it doesn't prevent her from exacting revenge brutal enough to make battle-hardened warriors cringe when she gets Gundleus in her hands.
* In ''Literature/ThePerksOfBeingAWallflower'', [[spoiler:Charlie's aunt was raped as a young girl, which led to her having serious psychological issues, which is why she herself molested Charlie which led to Charlie becoming a shy wallflower and suicidal as well as depressed.]]
* Justified in ''Literature/CodexAlera'', in which Odiana was driven mad by being raped while wearing a discipline collar just as her powers as TheEmpath were coming in. Being forced to feel pleasure, both due to the discipline collar and being able to feel what her rapists were feeling broke her mind, and left her the AxCrazy PsychoForHire [[TheOphelia Ophelia]] she is today.
* In the second book of ''Literature/TheSwordOfTruth'' series, [[spoiler:a queen (Kahlan's sister)]] is [[PrisonRape left in a prison for a few days with several criminals]]. She is rescued right before an execution. At first, she's catatonic, then suicidal, then she seems to recover, but ends up incapable of fighting the very enemies who threw her in the prison.
* Zarate Arkham in Daniel Gonzalezís horror novel ''Un grito en las tinieblas'' was raped by her father, causing her several psychological problems and was submitted once in a mental institution. This is a major plot in the novel.
* Nadine Cross become catatonic after being forcibly impregnated by Randall Flagg in ''Literature/TheStand''.
* ''Literature/ASeriesOfUnfortunateEvents'': Throughout the series, Count Olaf hints at having a VillainousCrush on Violet and having inclinations of meaning to rape her which terrifies her and understandably {{Squick}}s her out. It's implied in the first book when one of Olaf's mooks has Violet captive and reassures him "I understand boss. She's yours boss." that the hook handed man is reassuring Olaf he won't lay a hand on Violet because Olaf wants to be the first one to sexually assault her and lay claim to her. Olaf also rubs a knife against her thigh in the second book and in the tv series touches Violet while telling Klaus he'll touch whatever he wants. The Hostile Hospital book mentions that Olaf was the one to prep her for surgery (ie. changing her into the hospital gown). Given that, the fact that Violet seems much more prone to having breakdowns after the eighth book (PTSD, much?), and how much more smug Olaf acts around the children, Olaf may have done more than just changed her clothes while he had her in his clutches. He also refers to her good looks more than once as do other male characters all of which traumatized her.
* Carnival from the ''Literature/DeepgateCodex'' series. The rape was particularly brutal, and even after three millennia, she's still not over it.
* In Mary Gentle's ''Literature/AshASecretHistory'', Ash, aged eight, is raped in the book's very first pages. She kills her attackers, and this begins a life of violence. It's part of what makes her into someone who's callous and lacking in introspection.
* In Fifty Shades of Grey, Christian Grey was underage when an adult woman had sex with him. He denies that this was rape, and the heroine is jealous instead of disgusted when she meets his rapist, but in any case it was statutory rape. Considering his inability to differentiate between consensual sex and rape in the relationship with Ana, it is highly unlikely that this sexual abuse didn't affect him negatively.
* Part of the reason that Kennit, of the ''Literature/LiveshipTraders'' trilogy, is so messed up is that he was repeatedly raped (among other abuse) as a child. This leads to...repercussions, later.
* ''Literature/SisterhoodSeries'' by Fern Michaels: The first book Weekend Warriors reveals that three bikers raped Kathryn Lucas in front of her disabled husband, and they knew that her husband was disabled and helpless to stop them. Naturally, she was left badly scarred by this. The book has her and her new friends track down the three bikers responsible and give them the John Wayne Bobbit treatment in order for her to obtain closure in this matter. After that book, her attitude remains as combative, confrontational, explosive and fiery as ever, which suggests that her behaviour may simply be part of who she is, and not just the result of her being raped. Or perhaps that the scars were too deep to be healed by one act of vengeance....
* Used to effect in Nick Cave's And the Ass Saw the Angel when toward the end, the narrator reveals that he got raped one time. He's already so completely insane that its lack of effect on him feels wholly in-character.
* In "Books of the Raksura", the main character, Moon, a Raksura, never saw another member of his species and didn't even know how they were called or if he was the only one left. Moon was desperately trying to find any signs, anything about his race, until he found a city attacked by the Fell, a race of vicious flying predators who eat intelligent beings. There, a Fell ruler (always male gender) called Liheas tried to brainwash him into thinking he was Fell too, and then raped him, after which Moon realized he was not one of them and broke the ruler's neck while the ruler was sleeping, then set the room on fire and escaped. Because of this traumatic event, he stopped all attempts to ever try to find his race, didn't care anymore about himself for a long time, and became cynical, wary and distrustful of others, especially of the Fell and even more of the Raksura.
* ''Literature/LetTheRightOneIn'': In the book Hakan starts off as a pedophile murdering someone for their blood, which is pretty creepy to begin with, and just gets worse as the story goes on. The incident when he pours acid over his face stands out, along with all the subsequent descriptions of what his face looks like afterward. Mindless!Vampire!Håkan is even worse, especially when he tries to rape Eli. Cranked up to eleven when Eli as he escapes nigh rape, unwittingly traps Tommy inside the completely dark bomb shelter together with Disfigured!Mindless!Zombie!Rapist!Vampire!Håkan for several hours. Tommy manages to pull through, but is clearly not all that well adjusted afterwards. Also, Eli's castration scene reads like a sexual assault affecting their sense of self and perhaps their sanity worst of all.

* Jan from ''Series/DaysOfOurLives'' was an AlphaBitch before she was raped. Afterwards, she turned crazy.
* In ''Series/{{Oz}}'', Beecher's rape at the hands of Schillinger definitely didn't do any favors for his mental health.
** Same deal with Cyril.
** Adebisi brutally rapes the semi-conscious Schibetta at one point. As a result, Schibetta, traumatized by the rape, begins losing his mind and is transferred to the psych ward.
** A homophobic rapist is targeted by Schillinger and his gang. Beecher gives up protecting him after the guy was such a {{Jerkass}} to him leaving him open to being raped by Schillinger and his mooks. A later scene shows him laying in the fetal position naked on the ground following the rape looking traumatized and covered in scratch marks and bruises.
** James Robson is a murderer who enjoyed raping other inmates. It is later revealed that he himself was raped as a child. He was also clearly traumatized after he was raped with a spoon by a brawny inmate who promised him protection in return.
* "Revenge", the very first story on ''Series/AlfredHitchcockPresents'', played on this idea without using the R word. A woman already recovering from a nervous breakdown is "assaulted" in her trailer. Her husband looks to avenge her by killing her assailant. One day, she points the man out to her husband, and he does the deed. [[spoiler:Then she points to another man, and another, and another.]]
* Darcy from ''Series/DegrassiTheNextGeneration'' is date raped at a party and later contracts Chlamydia. Afterword, what was originally an innocent Christian school girl quickly loses her mind and pretty much becomes a ticking time bomb of hell. She slices her wrists, nearly slices her neck (before cutting off a chunk of her hair), and even lies to the school administrators that a teacher who was trying to help her through it all had molested her, resulting in his suspension.
* An episode of ''Series/LawAndOrderSVU'' (Behave) has probably the most justified version of this ever seen. The victim of the week was an ordinary woman with an ordinary job and dreams and the like until she was assaulted several years in the past by the VillainOfTheWeek. The aggressor was never caught, but she moved on, went to college, and had just about graduated when the same man found her and assaulted her again, having tracked her down using a stolen driver's license he had taken the first time he attacked her. As far as the after-assault investigation went, same result. Far more traumatized this time, she moved across the country, slowly recovered, got engaged, and was just a couple weeks away from being married... when the same man tracked her down ''again''. The stress and trauma eventually broke apart her engagement and the victim became a total recluse, working from home, having groceries delivered, not leaving her apartment more than once a month if she could possibly help it, and basically dealing with a full dose of the most High Octane ParanoiaFuel imaginable... until during the one day she absolutely had to leave her home for something work-related, the man finds her '''yet again''', this time beating her bloody in the process, which is what leads into the start of the episode. As it happens, the villain was a successful travelling executive who ''had a collection'' of these women across the country, who used their stolen [=IDs=] to track them down and assault them repeatedly until he became the first thing they think of when they wake up and the last thing they think of when they go to sleep, feeding his ego with the idea that every minute of their lives revolves around what he's done to them and what he'll eventually do again. Even for [=SVU=] villains, he is quite beyond the pale.
* Brother Justin has this effect on several young women in ''Series/{{Carnivale}}''. It's implied to be at least partially due to his nature as the AntiChrist, although there are also visible bruises showing that physical abuse is also part of it.
* ''Series/TheOuterLimits1995'' episode "A Stitch in Time", where a woman is raped/assaulted as a teen and grows up to be a mentally-unbalanced scientist who builds a time machine and uses it to go back and execute serial killers before they target anyone. Her ensuing RippleProofMemory does not help with her ongoing mental stability. [[spoiler:This is ultimately resolved when a cop goes back in time and saves her from getting raped in the first place. Her altered present self is significantly better off as a result.]]
* ''Series/OrangeIsTheNewBlack'': It's hinted that Pennsatucky's initial insanity was partially caused by a RapeAsBackstory plot in her youth. Later, she genuinely tried to become a better person and to help people in her own way and loved animals, namely ducks. However, after she was raped by a guard she withdraws into herself, keeping to herself, and hiding under her hoodie. She also states in a emotionless manner about how she used to like ducks but not anymore after the guard showed her the ducks and treated her with kindness before later raping her. While he's doing that she looks like she's repressing her emotions and feelings about the whole event and shutting herself down to avoid the reality of what is happening to her. She later appears willing to go along with Big Boo to get revenge on the guard. Also, from a young age Pennsatucky prostituted herself and been occasionally raped, believing it was normal because she learned this philosophy from her mother during a disturbing sex talk.
* Norma Bates of ''Series/BatesMotel'' was sexually assaulted by her brother, and is later raped by Keith Summers in her own kitchen. Because of this her mind is a psychological mess and she's smothering and controlling of her son Norman. She also kills her rapist.
* ''Series/RizzoliAndIsles'': In "No One Mourns The Wicked", Dr. Victoria Nolan becomes a serial killer after being raped and getting pregnant by her own father. Mom and Dad were her first victims, and might have been excusable, given the situation. However, her body count rose, especially after she found her son, and started teaching him to become a serial killer as well.
* ''Series/PrisonBreak'': T-Bag's FreudianExcuse for his behavior as a DepravedBisexual pedophile rapist is that he was a ChildByRape and abused physically and sexually as a kid.
* ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'':
** Implied to have happened to Sam while [[spoiler:in Hell. The first time he has a hallucination of Lucifer, he greets him with "Hi, Sam. Long time, no spooning." It's compounded further when he tells him, "You're my bunkmate. My bitch. In every sense of the word." and refers to him as "bunk buddy"]]. Crosses into FridgeHorror. More or less confirmed in [[Recap/SupernaturalS07E15RepoMan "Repo Man" (S07, E15)]]: [[spoiler:Lucifer]]:''' That's what I'm talking about, Sam. Real interaction again, I miss that--the rapier wit; the wittier rape. It's implied the abuse Sam suffered from Lucifer led to him developing PTSD hallucinations about it. Sam confirms this to Dean in season 11.
** Implied heavily between Alastair and Dean too. The former mentions "poking and prodding" ''way'' too often. Dean mentions "They sliced and carved and tore at me in ways that you...until there was nothing left." Unsurprisingly he's even more messed up after his tribulations in hell, which he [[StepfordSmiler tries to cover up]].
* PlayedForLaughs in an episode of ''Serires/FlightOfTheConchords'' which has Bret dating a woman who becomes increasingly pushy and aggressive in demanding sex from him, finally outright lying to and manipulating him to get him to capitulate. It's a little shaky on how it's portrayed; Bret is clearly traumatized afterwards though and is shown taking a ShowerOfAngst.
* ''Series/{{Rectify}}'': In a flashback, Wendall reveals to Daniel, while masturbating, that he had participated in gang raping Daniel in the shower, and Daniel mentions how he was gang raped repeatedly while in prison. That, combined with his DarkAndTroubledPast before prison, and the [[GoMadFromTheIsolation being isolated from reality]] in a completely white room with nothing to stimulate him helped to push him down the SanitySlippage path combined with his CloudCluckoolander ways and tendency to act withdrawn and keep to himself as well as have anger management problems. Amantha, Daniel's sister, states outright to Jon that Daniel is "damaged" as a result of his time in prison.
* Alan Shore of ''Series/BostonLegal'' was raped by a friend of his mother's when he was fourteen. It's implied this is why his interactions with women are, in general, so messed up.
* In the ''Series/MastersOfHorror'' episode "Imprint", the prostitute eventually reveals that a big part of why she's so emotionally scarred is her horrific youth, where she was separately raped by both her father and a local Buddhist monk.
* ''Series/MelrosePlace''. Jane goes off the deep end after being raped by ex-lover Richard, first stalking and terrorizing and eventually killing him, then stalking and terrorizing her other ex-lover Jake (who she pushed away after the rape) and his new girlfriend. She finally checks herself into a hospital for treatment.

* In the Music/ThreeDaysGrace music video "Never Too Late", a woman is almost driven to suicide (she works through her issues, though), and we learn that she became that way as a result of possible physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a man in a striped sweater.
* Chester Bennington of Linkin Park revealed in a interview that he was sexually abused by a older friend of the family for a few years. This, coupled with his parents divorce, led to him to develop serious mental disorders, depression, drug addiction, and anger problems. [[spoiler: tragically he committed suicide on July 20th 2017]].

* In ''Theatre/AStreetcarNamedDesire'', Blanche's descent into insanity becomes especially evident after [[spoiler:Stanley rapes her]].

* The Whistleblower DLC for ''VideoGame/{{Outlast}}'' has Eddie Gluskin, also known as the Groom. Having been sexually abused by his uncle and father as a child, he became obsessed with sexuality and marriage, and was already a serial killer before coming to the asylum. The experiments conducted on him there only made him worse. When you finally meet him, he has already mutilated and killed dozens of other (male) inmates, turning them into his 'brides' - and he attempts to do the same to you. He fluctuates from using creepily loving terms ("Darling!") to crazily misogynistic ones ("Filthy sluts. You're like all the others.") to outright death threats ("You don't deserve my children. You don't even deserve to live."). Gluskin is quite an unusual example as he isn't obsessed with one individual in particular; anyone he sees as being a candidate for becoming his 'bride' can fall prey to his desire, usually fatally. Although it is possible that since Waylon has survived the longest and would have been his last victim, Gluskin was "attached" to him the most, especially since he held his hand before he died.
* It's strongly implied in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates'', and ''especially'' in the Japanese version, that [[spoiler: Niles]] was sexually abused during his days as a StreetUrchin. The immensely sucky life he lived in his early years leads him to have... serious issues.

* ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'': There's a RunningGag of Peter being raped by such things like worms, pie smoke/aroma, a breeding bull, a bug, etc. It's implied this, combined with the other crap he endures, is what led to his ExtremeOmnisexual occasional AxCrazy persona who has committed almost every crime under the sun. He also uses SelfHarm on himself quite frequently. He's shown to be very traumatized after the rapes as well.
** Meg spends her free time trying to get a boyfriend (this even includes her falling for the family dog Brian when he was nice to her) and in episodes like "Stew-Roids" and "Dial Meg For Murder" she appears to exhibit attraction toward Connie, a girl who constantly bullies her. Some episodes depict her being both emotionally fragile and disturbed, derived from a desperation for love and attention, and she self harms herself as well. "Dial Meg For Murder" implied she'd been on both ends of multiple PrisonRape situations, in a women's correctional institution. As a result she came back home as a cold-hearted convict who terrorized everyone who ever made fun of her, including her dad, even though she had already been disturbed before the rape it definitely didn't do any favors for her mental health.
%% No real life examples, please!
