Works that have a same-gender and/or transgender romance as a major theme.

In the West, gay and lesbian romances aimed at UsefulNotes/{{LGBT}} readers have existed as a publishing niche since the 1950s, but are still relatively obscure (and SturgeonsLaw and TheTheoremOfNarrowInterests applies to what can be found). Most broadly-known Western same-sex and LGBT romances are aimed at general audiences, and have a tendency [[BuryYourGays to be tragic]].

In Japanese media, these have more well-defined genre expectations and usually fall into the YaoiGenre (m/m romance for a female audience), {{Bara}} (m/m romance for gay/bi men), and YuriGenre (f/f romance generally, although there is a separation between works for men, for women in general, and for lesbians in specific).

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Literature/ArashiNoYoruNi'' was [[WordOfGod always this]], but became most obvious after the 2005 animated film, when both lead characters were cast with unmistakably male voices. It's about a wolf and a goat who become best friends, however, it's tinged with [[HoYay romantic]] [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything subtext]].
* ''Manga/BokuNoFutatsuNoTsubasa'' is a RomanticComedy with an intersex protagonist.
* ''Manga/WanderingSon'' is a SliceOfLife revolving around [[{{Transgender}} two transgender children]]. While Takatsuki (a trans boy) doesn't have any major crushex, the trans girl protagonist has had quite a few crushes on girls ([[IfItsYouItsOkay and Takatsuki himself]]) and even gains a girlfriend halfway through the manga.
* ''Manga/SweetBlueFlowers'', by the same author as ''Wandering Son'' has a predominantly straight cast overall, but the ''main'' characters are mostly lesbians.
* ''LightNovel/{{No 6}}'' is officially a [[{{Dystopia}} dystopian]] SciFi story, but the [[HomoeroticSubtext heavily romantic]] relationship between the two male leads is a major theme throughout. By the end of the story, [[spoiler:they're the OfficialCouple.]]
* ''Manga/OffBeat'' is an OELManga about a bored TeenGenius named Tory who becomes intrigued by his mysterious new neighbor, Colin, and how this chance meeting blossoms into a relationship between the two boys. [[spoiler:They have their BigDamnKiss in the penultimate chapter, and the epilogue hints that their relationship continues into adulthood.]]
* ''Manga/OhanaHoloholo'' is a part SliceOfLife, part romance story revolving around two bisexual women who used to date and are now trying to live together platonically.
* ''Manga/BokuraNoHentai'' is a OtokonokoGenre deconstruction where the main characters are a straight trans girl, a straight crossdresser, and a gay crossdresser. Marika has feelings for both of the others main characters, Ryousuke eventually falls for Marika, and Parou likes both. There's also the LongHairedPrettyBoy Satoshi who has feelings for Marika [[BiTheWay no matter her gender]].
* ''Anime/YuriOnIce'' revealed itself to be this after seven episodes of (very intense) ShipTease, [[spoiler:as Victor and Yuri have their BigDamnKiss and eventually get engaged]]. It's also crucial to [[spoiler:Yuri]]'s character development and career arc as a skater.
* ''Manga/{{Yuureitou}}'' is a mystery-murder manga about a {{NEET}} named Taichi who befriends a {{bishonen}} trans man named Tetsuo. There are [[CastFullOfGay a lot of gay and bisexual characters]]. [[spoiler:Taichi and Tetsuo are the OfficialCouple.]]
* The ''Adolescence of Utena'' movie of ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'' fame is more blatant about Utena and Anthy's romantic relationship, one that's sealed with a kiss by the very end.

* ''Faith and Buffy's Super-Happy-Ending-Bedtime-Story'' [[http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-13766/DreamSmith+Faith+and+Buffy+s+Super-Happy-Ending+Bedtime+Story.htm Story's Page on TtH.]]: This is an epic telling (three novel-length installments so far and counting) of the love affair between Buffy and Faith, in a version of the universe that is as close as possible to what we saw in the show itself. The story takes no shortcuts--the two girls start as enemies, and the transition to loving relationship is slow, and strewn with setbacks.
* In Creator/{{Vathara}}'s ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/617011/1/Desert-Fox Desert Fox]]'', there is a lesbian couple consisting of a human and a gargoyle, both original characters. The human is a Native American woman and undercover DEA agent and they're both on the run from drug smugglers.
* [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Trowa and Quatre]] of Creator/{{Vathara}}'s ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1792282/1/Upon-A-Fiery-Steed Upon a Fiery Steed]]'', who come from another solar system instead of ours in this AU fusion where there's apparently so much acceptance that the word for "spouse" is "life partner."
* One of the main subplots in ''[[FanFic/TheSurprisingAdventuresOfAGlaceonInUnova The Glaceon and the Shadow]]'' is a very cute romance between Larissa and Sofia, which triggers major character development for both of them.
* It's shaping up to have at least some elements of this in A New Day of the FanFic/MassFoundations series between Eric Grimes of our world and Garrett Pitt, an OriginalCharacter of the Franchise/MassEffect universe.
