The Gilligan Cut is a classic staple of comedy in which someone announces something forcefully and the scene immediately cuts to the same character doing something in direct contradiction to what he just said.

For example, a character protests vehemently, "What, you expect me to wear a grass skirt, stand up on top of the Empire State Building and belt out the chorus of 'New York, New York'? Well, I'm not gonna... I'm just not gonna..." which promptly cues a WhipPan over to said character wearing a grass skirt on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building, singing "Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today / I want to be a part of it, New York, New York!"

The Gilligan Cut. Comedy ain't pretty.

Simply put, if the character says "I'm not doing this", no matter how many times they say it, chances are the character ''will'' do this for the sake of comedic effect, while responding "I can't ''believe'' I'm doing this". May involve a bit of LeaningOnTheFourthWall when the victim will demand to know how they were talked into this situation.

Often combined with a SmashCut if the transition is especially quick or the character is cut off mid sentence. Compare ImmediateSelfContradiction where the contradiction is immediate in-universe.

Not to be confused with a DescriptionCut, which is where a description of what a character is probably thinking/doing is immediately contradicted by the character in question. See also IronicEchoCut. Another way of TemptingFate. Contrast IKnowWhatWeCanDoCut. Not to be confused with CutawayGag.

Note of historical interest: This was the first trope ever to be put on TV Tropes.

* There's a life insurance commercial that uses the Gilligan Cut to demonstrate how often life can interfere with our plans. Guy says he'll never get married- Gilligan Cut to him buying a wedding ring. Guy and wife say they'll never have children- Gilligan Cut to the delivery room. Guy and wife say they'll never move to the suburbs- well, you get the picture.

* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''
** The second movie has this, and plays with it at the same time. The women of the group are being abducted by unknown shadowy creatures one by one. Currently, Akane is the only one they can use as bait, except everyone's looking at male Ranma. Cut to female Ranma struggling against the pole she's been tied to. Of course, there's a kettle on the top of the pole, it's clearly a trap, and Ranma was only acting like s/he was tied up.
** Happens when Akane becomes injured and unable to participate in the Martial Arts Gymnastics tournament. They try to convince Ranma to change into a girl to take her place but he loudly protests that there is no way he is putting on a leotard. Cut to Ranma wearing a leotard.
*** While there was a bit of time between the protest and the wearing of the leotard in the anime, the above scene was done with a single cut with Gilligan-esque sound effects in ''RanmaAbridged'', complete with appropriate setup.
---->'''Ranma:''' Oh no. There is no way I'm going to be wearing a leotard for the sake of others.\\
''(Gilligan Cut)''\\
'''Ranma:''' I can't believe I'm wearing a leotard for the sake of others.
* In ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'', Ed and Ling are [[spoiler:trapped in Gluttony's stomach.]] A tired Ling collapses and Ed tries to get him to get up again by starting to walk away while repeatedly saying he's leaving without him. We then cut to Ed carrying Ling over his shoulder.
* In ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'', right before Jiraiya leaves to investigate Akatsuki's ties to Amegakure, he goes to Tsunade's office, and, instead of just telling her that he thinks their leader is there, suggests they go out for a drink and talk at the bar. Tsunade rightfully points out that as a [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking Hokage]] with many ninja in the field, she can't just go out and get plastered in the middle of the afternoon. Cut to the two of them at a bar, Tsunade clearly getting plastered, and Jiraiya telling her she should take her own advice.
* Happens in an early episode of ''Anime/SoRaNoWoTo''. Kanata and Noel think that they saw a ghost in the barracks of their base. Kureha disagrees, suggesting that they're seeing things. Rio agrees with Kureha... cut to Kureha and Kanata standing at the entrance to the barracks, with Rio ordering them to investigate before turning around and running herself (and shouting those orders from a safe distance, no less).
* In ''Manga/{{Minami-ke}}'', after Chiaki laughs at Kana's anti-rain charm idea:
-->'''Kana:''' I'm going to roll you up in a sheet and hang you!\\
'''Chiaki:''' Okay, if you think you can do it, go ahead.\\
''(cut to Chiaki wrapped in a sheet, hanging on a rope tied around her waist)''\\
'''Chiaki:''' For real?
* From ''LightNovel/KazeNoStigma '' ("Catherine Returns"):
-->'''Jugo:''' Perhaps if this girl were to challenge her true feelings, Ayano will be a little nicer to Kazuma, before it's too late.\\
''(cut to Ayano punching a drawing of Kazuma taped to her pillow)''\\
'''Ayano:''' Stupid Kazuma! I hate you! Do you hear me? You make me sick!
* In a recent chapter of ''Manga/GambleFish'', Tomu asks Mika if he could sit on her shoulders so he can get a better look at the cracks on the cave's ceiling. She refused, saying that it is usually the woman that sits on top, but he debates that with her being a tennis pro, her legs are stronger to support them. She ultimately suggests they RockPaperScissors for it. The next scene, she is seen caring him on her shoulders cursing that she should have never gambled with a cheating gambler.
* ''Manga/FujimuraKunMates'': [[ChasteHero Fujimura]] suspects that two of his [[UnwantedHarem unwanted girlfriend candidates]] are up to their usual no good hijinks. But he refuses to spy on them for ethical reasons. Next page, he eventually gives in.
* The first episode of the ''[[Anime/TenchiUniverse Universe]]'' canon of ''Anime/TenchiMuyo'' has Tenchi's dad, Nobuyuki, vowing to stay up all night to protect Ryoko. One Gilligan Cut later, he's asleep on the couch.
* The first chapter of the very short lived gag manga ''Chagecha'' from the creator of Manga/BoboboboBobobo, we get this fine example with Masoto feeling confident about the titular Yankee BadAss Chagecha taking on a whole Yankee gang from Guerrilla High.
--> '''Masoto:''' This may be foolish talk but... with you, I feel we can win...//
-->''(cut to Guerrilla High School where they are facing HUNDREDS of Yankee gang members along with their mechanized leader which is a basically LITERALLY a GIANT head)''//
-->'''Masoto:''' I'm sorry Senpai... it's really hopeless...
* A bit more subtle than most cases, but ''{{Anime/K}}'' has a scene where Yashiro says he always thought the prime minster was the most powerful person in Japan. Cut to the prime minister, who is currently bending over backwards to appease the whims of an AncientConspiracy.
* In episode 2 of ''LightNovel/SakurasouNoPetNaKanojo'', [[NoSocialSkills Mashiro]] tells [[CloudcuckoolandersMinder Sorata]] to take off his clothes. He protests, but complies when she asks if taking her clothes off would make him comfortable. Later she tells him she wants to touch him, but he adamantly refuses. Then the next scene shows her sitting on top of him on the bed.
* In ''TheTatamiGalaxy'', [[NoNameGiven Nameless Protagonist Guy]] declares that he would never fall for the scam of buying tons of new-age "health products" to gain higher rank in their cultish organization and possibly meet [[UglyGuysHotDaughter the leader's attractive daughter]]. Next scene, he's receiving a huge package of the stuff, and has started working several jobs so he can buy it in ever-increasing quantities, all for the sake of his hopeless obsession with said daughter.
* ''{{Manga/Saki}}''
** Just before Shizuno's quarter-finals match begins, she tells everyone to leave things to her. It cuts to late in the match, when Shizuno is behind by a fair margin, and has to desperately struggle to get to second place in order to advance.
** This happens again midway through the lieutenant match in the semi-finals, when Ako discusses her strategy against Takami.
-->'''Shizuno''': So what's the plan? [[spoiler:Try to avoid dealer repeats and when you are in tenpai as dealer, say you aren't?]]
-->'''Ako''': That's right. [[TemptingFate A pretty simple counter strategy]].
-->''(cut to the match)''
-->'''Ako''': [[OhCrap Or so I thought! This is bad!]]
** In ''Manga/SakiShinohayuDawnOfAge'', Kanna Ishitobi has never encountered anyone who can defeat her at games, not even mahjong. When she goes up against Hayari Mizuhara (who, in the present, is a professional mahjong player), Kanna dismisses her as an airhead and thinks her victory is certain. The next page, Kanna is sitting, shocked, after losing to Hayari.
* ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' in episode 10, albeit certainly not in a comical way: [[spoiler:After Mami, Sayaka, and Kyouko are killed, Homura attempts to calm Madoka down (Madoka had just performed a MercyKill on a psychologically broken Mami who found out the true nature of Witches firsthand) by saying they can defeat Walpurgis Night ([[IHaveManyNames Walpurgisnacht, Nox Walpurgis, Warupurugisu no Yoru]]), it cuts to them lying on their backs, close to turning into Witches (though, strictly speaking, they ''did'' defeat Walpurgis Night).]]
* In ''Anime/YuGiOhCapsuleMonsters'', this happens early on after Yugi defeats the Trents.
-->'''Yugi:''' I'm sure by now they've realized we're not in India anymore!\\
'''Joey:''' This guide to India is useless!

* Jim Gaffigan had this experience:
--> '''Wife:''' I think I'd like to go blueberry picking. Maybe we should go blueberry picking.\\
'''Jim:''' I remember thinking ''No. No fucking way.'' You can't even get migrant workers to do that stuff. But the weird thing is, not even 10 seconds later, there I was picking blueberries.
* Larry the Cable Guy had a running gag of this sort throughout one of his shows. For instance, his wife urged him to shave his balls. Like he was going to do that. "So there I am, shaving my nut sack...."
* The late great Robert Schimmel was another fan of this one too:
--> "Yeah, like I'm going to stick my dick, which shoots a liquid, into something that ''plugs into the wall''. ''[{{Beat}}]'' So I'm on the floor fucking this thing..."\\
"My wife says, 'I don't know! Maybe we should take it to the vet.' I said, yeah, why don't you just let me take him for a ''drive''. We're gonna take a five-dollar rabbit to the vet?! ''[{{Beat}}]'' So we're at the vet..."
--> "'Honey, I don't want a knotted rag up my ass.' 'Well, how about a string of beads?' I said, 'What are you, Monty Hall? This isn't ''Let's Make a Deal'', here.' But then, I figured, you only go around this crazy old world once, and besides, who's gonna know? ''[{{Beat}}]'' So, I'm at the hospital, getting the beads removed...."
* Garry Shandling, in his HBO ''Stand Up'' special:
--> So she says, "Why don't we put the dogs in the car and take them with us?" I said, "No, no. I'm not putting these dogs, that I don't know, in the car." Right? "No." So I put 'em in the car....

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* As shown above, a running gag in CarlBarks' (and, later, other authors') [[ComicBook/DisneyDucksComicUniverse Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge]] comics.
* Also a running gag in ''{{Bone}}'', where somebody will say, "Those rat creatures [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough would have to be pretty stupid]] to [fill in the blank]!" In the next frame, we see the rat creatures have done just that, and the same person will say, "Stupid, stupid rat creatures!"
* ''ComicBook/{{Empowered}}''
** [[AlphaBitch Sistah Spooky]] gets one of these during her BackStory. A rather plain black girl in a school full of Blonde Bimbos, she summons a demon to take revenge -- only to be told that he can't act against other clients. He then offers her the chance to enroll in the same program to [[DealWithTheDevil sell her soul for beauty]], which she emphatically rejects. The next page has her admiring her new body, and receiving a phone call from Hell saying that there was a minor problem with the spell, making her a VainSorceress on top of things.
** There's no way [=ThugBoy=]'s going to wear his old Sparta-esque "Centurion 3000" minion costume with the breastplate nipples and short skirt. No way in hell. Nuh-uh.
--->'''Empowered:''' Put it on, '''please'''.\\
''(cut to him wearing the costume)''
* Appears in the second issue of ''TheLeagueOfExtraordinaryGentlemen''. Mina Murray, Captain Nemo and Allan Quartermain are investigating a school under the guise of a married couple and their manservant. They are given two rooms for the night, one with a couple's bed and another with a shabby servant's bed.
-->'''Nemo:''' ''(to Murray)'' The sooner we have a good night's sleep and can be gone from here, the better. You, of course, will take the single room.\\
''(cut to Nemo and Quartermain sitting on the single bed)''\\
'''Quartermain:''' Women.
* Used in the Swedish comic-strip ''ComicBook/{{Rocky}}'' when the title-character freaks out when he runs into Martin, the man who stole his ex-girlfriend, only to learn that she in turn had left Martin.
-->'''Rocky:''' Ha, suits him right. If he thinks that I will forgive him, he must think again. Rocky '''never''' forgets a wrong-doing.\\
''(cut to the two of them lying in the grass with a empty bottle of vodka in between them, stupidly drunk)''\\
'''Rocky:''' All women are '''WHORES!'''\\
'''Martin:''' Just what I was going to say.
* [[http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/pg02.jpg/ This page]] of a ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'' comic featuring Lola Bunny working at a pizza joint. Her boss offers her to wear a pizza suit while participating in a Delivery Girl Pageant, but she refuses to do so:
-->'''Lola:''' Whotta ''freak-show''!\\
'''Boss:''' You are ''going'', of course.\\
'''Lola:''' Are you ''nuts'', boss? ''Parade'' around a stage like a ''trick Spaniel''?\\
'''Boss:''' Sometimes ''dignity'' must be ''sacrificed'' in the name of ''free advertising''.\\
'''Lola:''' Easy for ''you'' to say, Huactui! What's in it for ''me''?\\
'''Boss:''' Oh... not much, I suppose. Just a spotlight in front of ''movie directors''... ''agents''... available ''millionaires''...\\
'''Lola:''' Perhaps I was too hasty?\\
'''Boss:''' ''That's'' the spirit! Now ''put on'' the ''outfit''!\\
''(cut to Lola wearing the pizza suit in front of a cheering crowd)''\\
'''Lola:''' I ''hate'' my boss...
* A variant played for incredibly dark comedy appears in Mark Waid and Alex Ross's ''ComicBook/KingdomCome''. Superman prevents a group of DarkerAndEdgier heroes from letting a [[InnocentBystander bystander]] get killed, then gives them a genuinely moving Superman-style lecture about the value of human life. The next panel is Vandal Savage [[NeckSnap breaking a woman's neck]] [[EstablishingCharacterMoment because she put the wrong amount of sugar]] [[KickTheDog in his coffee.]]
* Another dark variant appears in ''ComicBook/IdentityCrisis'' when Sue's murderer is revealed and argues "You can't just throw me in some cell and toss the key!" Cut to [[BedlamHouse Arkham Asylum]].
* Several times in ''ComicBook/MyLittlePonyMicroSeries'' Issue #3, typically Rarity commenting on how the next day can't be any worse before she goes to bed and finding out the next panel it is much worse.
* In the first issue of ''The Order'', the fledgling team defeats a villain who was causing a huge wildfire in Los Angeles, and are so happy they decide to have a night on the town. Avona isn't so sure, but Maul doesn't see any harm in it: "What are they gonna do, ''fire'' us tomorrow?" The next day, everyone who went out that night is fired -- turns out they violated the morality clause in their contracts.
* Subverted and then reaffirmed in ''ComicBook/YTheLastMan'': Yorrick states confidently that he's ''sure'' that his girlfriend Beth has been doing just fine in Australia for the last two years. The next panel is a close-up of a woman's badly rotten corpse in Australia. The panel after that is Beth looking at the corpse, but otherwise just fine. After a few more panels, however, she's kidnapped.

* ''ComicStrip/CalvinAndHobbes''
** Happens often, especially when Calvin refuses to take a bath. The next panel will have him in the bathtub complaining.
** This moist and delicious cookie for the win:
--->'''Mom:''' Time for your bath, Calvin.\\
'''Calvin:''' Sorry, I'm in denial about baths.\\
''(cut to shot of Calvin in the bathtub)''\\
'''Mom:''' Fine. Go ahead and deny it.\\
'''Calvin:''' No one respects my denial.
** There was also this memorable exchange:
--->'''Calvin:''' I don't think I'll go to school today.\\
'''Mom:''' ''I'' think you will.\\
'''Calvin:''' '''I''' think I won't.\\
''(cut to Calvin grudgingly waiting at the bus stop)''\\
'''Calvin:''' Rats.
* Lampshaded in ''Daddy's Home''. Elliot asks his dad if they can take a pelican home with them. Dad: "We are not bringing that pelican home with us, and that's final!" In the next panel, Elliot says, [[http://www.creators.com/comics/daddys-home/64077.html "Cut to plane ride home ..."]], and, sure enough, the third panel shows the pelican on a plane going home with the family.
* In France during the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreyfus_affair Dreyfus affair]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Caran-d-ache-dreyfus-supper.jpg this cartoon]] by Caran d'Ache:
-->'''Top:''' Above all, let's ''not'' talk about the Dreyfus affair!\\
'''Bottom:''' (They talked about it...)
* Often a source of Comedy in FoxTrot: Once, Peter gloats to Jason that the torrental downpour would have to force Roger to cancel the day of golfing that Peter had been roped into. It then cuts to Roger and Peter on the golf course, in the middle of a torrential downpour and the latter expressing hatred of Jason's laugh.
** Also, reversed: Peter asks for advice from Roger regarding pulling an all nighter study period, to which Roger cites drinking coffee, splashing cold water on his face, and as a StopGap measure, play really loud music. It then cuts to Andy and Roger's bedroom with loud music blaring in the background, and Andy asking irritably if Roger also remembered to tell Peter about why he was [[PersonaNonGrata expelled]] from three fraternities with the implication that Roger's all nighter methods got him expelled from them.
* [[http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ga/2012/ga121212.gif This]] ''ComicStrip/{{Garfield}}'' Christmas strip:

* This occurred in the ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' fic ''FanFic/UninvitedGuests'' after Hitsugaya snapped, had a massive breakdown, and ran off to try to kill the BigBad single-handedly.
-->'''Matsumoto:''' Now, Captain Hitsugaya is, well... a Captain. So he's faster than we are, no doubt, but we can probably still catch up to him, just because he's going to be in the living world for a long time. ''(meanwhile, elsewhere...)''\\
'''Urahara:''' Well, yes, I suppose I can get you to Hueco Mundo for your top-secret mission.

** When Goku asks where Bulma is after reaching Namek, Krillin comments she's probably doing something girly. Cut to Bulma fighting a giant crab with heavy metal playing.

** When Gohan asks to go check on his father who has been taken away to receive his heart medication, Piccolo assures him that Goku's fine. Cut to Goku screaming in agony.
* The ''StarCraft'' custom campaign, "The Shifters". The pre-mission briefing for Chapter 3, between space-pirate Yvonne and his girlfriend/XO went thusly:
-->'''XO:''' Please tell me you have a plan. We're not just going to walk in the front entrance, are we?\\
'''Yvonne:''' Of course not! I may not have a plan, but I assure you, we won't be walking in the front entrance.\\

* A rare text-only example happens in chapter 10 of ''{{Fanfic/Anthropology}}''. [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Bon-Bon]] receives a letter from Lyra stating she is moving out, with enough rent to last a few months. Bon-Bon thinks Lyra has finally gotten over her obsession on humans and has found a high-paying musical career. Cut to Canterlot Castle, where [[spoiler:Princess Celestia has turned Lyra into a human and is sending her away to find her real parents.]]
* ''[[FanFic/JusticeLeagueOfEquestria Mare of Steel]]'': At the beginning of the second arc, [[GeneralRipper Steel Wing]] is ranting about [[BewareTheSuperman how Rainbow Dash/Supermare is a threat]], and is probably "in her secret lair, plotting [Celestia's] downfall"... cut to Dash waking up from a nap in one of Applejack's trees.

* In ''Fanfic/TheLifeAndTimesOfAWinningPony'', Sparkler makes a Pinkie Promise that she has no romatic interest in Cloud's cousin Star Kicker. "Less than two hours later, I caught Star and Sparkler making out behind the equipment building. So much for Pinkie Promises."
* From ''Fanfic/ATasteOfTheGoodLife'':
-->Pinkie had been a mistake, of that he was certain. Every restaurant had stumbles the first week, it was just the nature of putting together so many moving parts for the very first time. As soon as they hit the first snag, he’d call her back here, blame it on her, and fire her. She wouldn’t be here for more than a quarter hour, then the Knoll could finally get serious.
-->Four hours later, he was still waiting for something to go wrong. This was inconceivable. Even the best restaurants he’d ever worked at had a few plates sent back, or customer complaints about incorrectly prepared food every night. But somehow, against all odds, everything was working perfectly today. On opening day, when the wheels should have come off within the first hour.

* ''Disney/MulanII''. "Fearless, loyal, and disciplined... China's most honorable and noble soldiers..."
* ''Disney/TheLionKing'' uses a Gilligan Cut just before Simba & Co.'s battle with Scar and his hyena minions.
-->'''Timon:''' [[WeNeedADistraction A diversion?]] What do you want us to do, dress in drag and do the hula?\\
''(Gilligan cut)''
-->'''Timon:''' LUAU!!!
** Bonus points to Nathan Lane for ad libbing the "dress in drag and do the hula?" bit.
** In the Broadway Musical version, it becomes "What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the Charleston?" Cut to Timon wearing a flapper hat and doing the Charleston in front of the hyenas; the change makes sense mostly because it's easier for the actor on stage to only have to hide one hat instead of a grass skirt and a lei.
* Made even funnier in ''Disney/TheLionKingOneAndAHalf'' sequel, where Timon and Pumbaa are heading to the Pride Lands to help Simba, with Timon saying [[UnreliableVoiceover this is their glorious moment]], then it cuts to that scene.
--->'''Timon:''' Heh heh. Let's just cut to the chase, shall we?

In an effort to try to convince Bill how wildly out of their depth they would be, Richie says, "After you shoot it and it keeps coming, you can try your slingshot on it. And if that doesn't work, I'll throw some of my sneezing powder at it." Cut to the next section where Bill and Richie are about to head to the haunted house, and Bill reveals that not only has he brought the gun but the slingshot too. The boys laugh about that, then Richie reveals that he brought the sneezing powder too. [[spoiler: And on this trip, the sneezing powder proves to be the most effective weapon. On a later trip, one of their other friends uses Bill's slingshot to shoot the monster with a silver slug and nearly kills it.]]
* ''Literature/{{Catch 22}}'':
** The narrator gives a description of how great Appleby is and asserts that everybody likes him. In the very next line, Yossarian says, "I hate that son of a bitch."
** Another example occurs in the fourth chapter.
--> "Know what I mean? You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours."
--> Yossarian knew what he meant.
--> "That's not what I meant," Doc Daneeka said, as Yossarian began scratching his back.
* This moment in ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecrets'' in which the trio discuss how they can get permission to get a book out of the restricted section of the library.
--> '''Ron:''' "Oh, come on, no teacher's gonna fall for that!" said Ron, "they'd have to be really thick..."
--> [Next chapter]
--> ''Since the disastrous episode with the pixies, Professor Lockhart had not brought live creatures to class...''
* In Erich Segal's ''Literature/LoveStory'', when Oliver and Jennifer first meet, she doesn't think he's as intelligent as she is. This exchange takes place:
--> "What the hell makes you so smart?"
--> "I wouldn't go for coffee with you."
--> "Listen--I wouldn't ask you!"
--> "That is what makes you stupid."
--> That closes the chapter. The next one begins,
--> "Let me explain why I took her for coffee."
* "Literature/TheMartian", wherein Mark makes water out of hydrazine and his oxygen stores, and ends Day 34 of his journal by writing "I have a chance to live after all!" The next journal entry starts with "I am fucked, and I'm gonna die!" Turns out that his hydrazine-to-water process led to a huge concentration of highly combustible hydrogen in the Hab (his Mars dwelling).
* ''Literature/ThisBookIsFullofSpiders'': Dave breathes a sigh of relief and asserts, "There will be no outbreak." The next chapter heading is "15 Minutes Before the Outbreak."
* In [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assia_Djebar Assia Djebar]]'s 1985 novel ''Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade'', two 19th-century Algerian rulers, Mohamed ben Kadrouma and Si M'hamed, have a conversation in which Si M'hamed is clearly trying to talk up his son to ben Kadrouma, who has a beautiful and marriageable daughter named Badra. Ben Kadrouma sees right through Si M'hamed's matchmaking scheme and says to himself, "I will never give him my daughter." In the very next scene, Badra is told she is to marry Si M'hamed's son within the week.

* In ''Series/{{Selfie}}'', the episode "Untag My Heart", Henry is grilling Eliza on her "relationship" with coworker Freddy. There is a direct cut revealing Eliza's lies. "Do you two ever make advance plans" "Kind of" *Cut to Eliza in bed recieving a text of 'Sup?' from Freddie. She jumps out of bed to go meet him.* "Have you and Freddy ever been on an actual date?" *Cut to Eliza dancing at a club when she gets another "Sup?" text from Freddy. She rushes out of the club* "Eliza, have you and Freddy ever even been outside together?" "For the most part" *Cut to making out in his apartment* "Does his wraparound terrace count?"
* ''Series/BabylonFive'': Londo and G'Kar are on Centauri Prime just when yet another conflict between the Centauri and the Narns starts, and a Centauri official demands G'Kar to be imprisoned as a security liability until the crisis is over. Londo responds "Where he goes, I go", and turns to G'Kar to comment that even one as arrogant as him wouldn't dare to imprison his own Prime Minister. Scene cut, and they're both standing in a cell, and Londo shouts "Shut up!" to G'Kar before he can say anything.
* In a segment of ''Series/BeakmansWorld'' on magic, Phoebe complains how they're gonna make her the bubble-brained assistant just because she's a girl. Beak says, "If anyone around here is going to be humiliated, it certainly won't be you." Everyone agrees, including Lester... until he realizes what that means. A half second later, WhipPan to the stage, and Lester as the bubble-brained assistant, complete with costume.
* ''Series/BigTimeRush''
** From the episode "Big Time Demos":
-->'''Kelly:''' What are you gonna do, ''chimp-nap'' Lolo and ''train'' him to like Big Time Rush?\\
''(cut to the studio where Lolo is across from them)''\\
** Subverted in "Big Time Wedding", when Mrs. Knight says that she absolutely refuses to marry Buddha Bob. Cut to the two at the Palm Woods pool in wedding clothes, where a "sermon" is reciting a passage and asks Mrs. Knight if she's sure about this...and she refuses.
** And lastly, in the pilot, a Gilligan Cut without the cut. Gustavo yells at Kendall, saying that he absolutely refuses to take James, Carlos, and Logan with him to Los Angeles. Kendall says, "So... we have a deal." And Gustavo agrees.
** In "Big Time Pranks" Gustavo and Kelly just pranked each other, Gustavo suggested that they should call it even and shook hands. "Ten minutes later" Kelly's hair is messed up, Gustavo is ducked taped to a chair, and the room is trashed.
** Also, in "Big Time Superheroes", after an officer bails the boys and Gustavo out of jail, he warns them to stay away from Hawk Records. Gustavo promises to do so...then we cut to Rocque Records, where Gustavo asks how they're gonna get back into Hawk Records.
* On ''Series/BoyMeetsWorld'', Cory wants to dress up as a girl as part of a "[[BlackLikeMe Chick Like Me]]" plot, but when he tries it out he looks very unconvincing. He and Topanga then suggest that Shawn do it instead, to which Shawn refuses. Cut to school the next day where Shawn is dressed as a girl.
* On ''Series/BreakingBad'', Marie is giving a sponge bath to her husband, Hank, while he's recuperating from surgery after being shot. He's reluctant to leave the hospital, while Marie wants him home, so Marie strikes up a deal: if she can make his... you know... stand up, salute, and... ''you know''... within one minute, he will leave the hospital. He laughs at her, saying that there is no way, just no w--... jump cut to an annoyed Hank being wheeled out of the hospital, followed by a smirking and, presumably, triumphant Marie.
** Similarly in episode "Face Off": when Hank is in protective custody asked to go to the DEA office to help with an interview, Marie says there is "No way he is going, end of story." Cut to Hank down at the office.
* ''Series/BreakoutKings'' would use these as scene cuts, usually with a WhipPan.
* In the pilot episode of ''Californication'', when Hank and Mia met in the bookstore she said this "Well, now I'm definitely, for sure, absolutely not going to sleep with you." One cut later...
* One episode of ''Series/{{Cheers}}'' had Sam and Robin competing in a series of contests. One of these is who can make the better billiard shot. Robin suggests wagering a dollar on the shot. Sam agrees, but comments "I don't see the big deal over a dollar." They make their shots. Cut to Sam holding the dollar up while he and the gang dance out of the back room chanting "Kiss Him Goodbye".
* ''Series/{{Chef}}'' did this all the time.
* ''Series/{{Dexter}}'' has one of these when the title character goes after a new killer who poses as a car salesman. He's duped quite well in a funny moment.
-->'''Dexter:''' I go in there to hunt a serial killer, I come out with a new car. How the hell did that happen?
** In his defence, it was a great car for his purposes (transporting his victims).
* ''Series/DoctorWho'' has one in the Tenth Doctor episode "Rise of the Cybermen", combined with JanitorImpersonationInfiltration:
-->''[The Doctor and Rose are on a hillside outside the Tyler estate. A limo passes them.]''
-->'''The Doctor:''' They've got visitors.
-->'''Rose Tyler:''' February the 1st. Mum's birthday. Even in a parallel universe, she still loves a party.
-->'''The Doctor:''' Well, given Pete Tyler's guest list, I wouldn't mind a look. And there is one guaranteed way of getting inside. ''[flips his psychic paper]''
-->'''Rose Tyler:''' Psychic paper!
-->'''The Doctor:''' Who do you want to be?
-->''[Cuts to the Doctor and Rose, dressed as waiters, carrying trays out of the kitchen with the rest of the wait staff]''
-->'''Rose Tyler:''' ''[annoyed]'' We could have been ''anyone''.
-->'''The Doctor:''' It got us in, didn't it?
-->'''Rose Tyler:''' You're in charge of the psychic paper. We could have been guests, celebrities, Sir Doctor, Dame Rose. We end up serving. I had enough of this back home.
-->'''The Doctor:''' If you want to know what's going on, work in the kitchen.
** Another one happens in the Eleventh Doctor episode "Cold War", with the Doctor telling Clara that there is absolutely no way she is going into the room to negotiate with the Ice Warrior. The next scene has Clara entering the room.
** One with a tiny, although cryptic bit of lead-in happens in "Robot". Harry blocks the door and orders the Doctor to go back to sickbay and sleep because he isn't going to leave this room. The Doctor looks around in obvious distress, trying to prove he isn't sick, then finds a skipping rope and starts skipping while counting a rhyme. Cut to Sarah and the Brigadier discovering Harry banging on the inside of the cupboard in which the Doctor had tied him up with the skipping rope and hung him upside down before leaving in the TARDIS.
* In one [[DVDCommentary commentary]] on ''Series/FatherTed'', Graham Linehan called this trope the "bicycle joke", giving an example that begins with the line "You'll never catch me riding a bicycle".
-->'''Dougal:''' If you're a solicitor, then I'm [[Music/CultureClub Boy George]]!\\
''(cut to Dougal sitting in a crypt, rocking in a traumatized fashion)''\\
'''Dougal:''' Karma karma karma karma chameleon...
* The first episode of ''{{Frasier}}'' has Frasier closing a scene by refusing to let Eddie, his father's dog, move in with them. The very next scene opens with Eddie staring at Frasier on the couch.
* ''Series/{{Friends}}'' has one in the One Where Rachel Quits, when she says that it feels so good that she doesn't have to serve coffee ever again. Cut to her new job, where a man tells her how her superior wants his coffee.
* ''GavinAndStacey'':
-->'''Bryn:''' There is no way you are getting me out clubbing in Cardiff tonight!\\
'''Bryn:''' I never thought you'd get me out clubbing in Cardiff tonight!
* Used for an extremely rare dramatic effect in the HBO Miniseries ''GenerationKill''. The Marines of First Recon is stopped in the middle of the night at the edge of the Euphrates River, preparing to launch an assault into Nasiriya.
-->'''Lt. Nathaniel Fick:''' I promise you, we will move out under cover of darkness.\\
''(cut to a nervous-looking Cpl. Harold James Trombley as 2nd Platoon's Humvees drive over the bridge into Nasiriya in broad daylight)''
* The trope namer, ''Series/GilligansIsland'', has a number of these. The best known is probably in "Gilligan The Goddess", where a group of natives -- who presumably have contact with civilization -- visit the island searching for a "White Goddess" to AppeaseTheVolcanoGod. Mrs. Howell volunteers, but the Goddess must be a maiden. Ginger and Mary Ann simply refuse to take part. The men decide that one of them should dress up in drag allowing the castaways to follow the procession and look for possible visiting ships. When it becomes apparent that the task will fall to Gilligan, he immediately protests, "I'm not gonna dress up like a girl, and you can't make me!". Immediate cut to Gilligan dressed as a woman (and still saying "You can't make me, ''you can't make me!''"). This scene was used in promos for the syndicated show for years.
* ''HogansHeroes''. In "Everyone loves a Snowman", Hogan and his men are trying to hide a recently downed bomber crew and the Gestapo finds and needs to fill a false tunnel in the barracks. Hogan tells the airmen not to worry, "There are twenty barracks on this base and we have tunnels to all but one, barracks 4." Cut to the men standing in front of Barracks #4.
* From one episode of ''HomeAndAway'':
-->'''Cassie:''' I am not getting in Brad's car with you! ''(cut)'' I don't know how you talked me into this.
** And Jules doesn't know either.
* ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' uses this from time to time.
** Subverted in Season 2: the gang sits on a bench and Lily says "I'm sure we won't be waiting long." Dissolve to a group of five elderly people (of the corresponding genders) in exactly the same positions. Of course, the old people had simply taken their place when the group had taken a trip to the vending machine.
** In the episode where Ted and Barney drunkenly talk about getting Robin back:
-->'''Barney:''' I should probably leave... before I do something I regret...\\
''(cut to Barney on the street outside Robin's apartment)''\\
'''Barney:''' ROBIN...ROBIN, I LOVE YOU!
** Another example is in early season 6. Barney needs help moving, and asks for help. The gang point out that not even he, the master manipulator, can get them to help him move. Barney smiles, loosens his tie, cricks his neck, flexes his knuckles, takes a breath and...
-->''(cut to the gang in Barney's mother's house, packing boxes)''\\
'''Lily:''' How the hell did he do that?
** In the second episode of Season 7:
-->'''Marshall:''' I wanna be the kind of man my child can look up to. So, sweeping declaration, I am never getting drunk again as long as I live. ''(the rest of the gang laughs)'' I'm serious! ''(scene briefly stops so Future Ted can narrate)''\\
'''Future Ted:''' Kids, it's not that your Uncle Marshall had a drinking problem. But whenever he made a sweeping declaration like that, [[LampshadeHanging you pretty much knew]]...\\
''(the next day, Marshall walks in drunk)''\\
'''Marshall:''' I DID IT AGAIN!\\
'''Future Ted:''' But I'm getting ahead of myself.
** In the Season 7 episode "The Broath," Barney swears Ted to secrecy that he is going to move in with Quinn, a stripper who had just taken him for over $700 and "whatever my Rolex is worth." Cue...
-->'''Ted:''' (to the gang at [=McLaren=]'s) Barney's moving in with a stripper who's going to take all his money!!
* ''Series/{{Justified}}'': Arlo to Raylan: "You're not gonna arrest me!" Cut to Raylan dragging him off in handcuffs.
* "The bicycle joke" happens about OncePerEpisode on ''LastOfTheSummerWine'', exactly as Linehan describes.
* ''{{Lost}}'' has a couple of darkly humorous examples:
-->'''Abaddon:''' Everything relies on you getting them in, getting them out, and preventing anyone from getting killed. Think you can do that?
-->'''Naomi:''' Sure. Why not?
-->[[spoiler:Cut to Naomi's corpse.]]
-->'''Miles:''' If Faraday said get people off the Island... I'd do it.
-->'''Dr. Chang:''' Well, then let's hope he knows what he's doing.
--> [[spoiler:Cut to Faraday's corpse.]]
* ''Series/MamasFamily'' pulls this move in season 1 episode 2. Vint declares to his mother that nothing can make him stop seeing (his mother's mortal enemy & neighbor) Naomi Oates. Immediate cut has Vint doing the very thing. They're married by episode 4.
* So fast you might miss it: On ''MadMen'', a flashback features a younger Don Draper offering to buy Roger Sterling a drink and listen to anything he had to say. Roger Sterling snidely retorts "It's 10 a.m.!" Cut to him enjoying a drink with Don.
* Done constantly in ''MarriedWithChildren'', usually after Al says something to tempt fate.
** In one instance, Marcy was telling him he needed to see a dentist due to his bad teeth, but Al reassures her that his teeth do not hurt and never have. Gilligan Cut to later in the night as Al screams "'''''Now''''' my teeth hurt!"
** In the episode "Oldies but Young 'Uns", Al becomes obsessed with finding an old song. When he eventually sees it in a record store, the cashier says that it costs 60 dollars:
-->'''Peggy:''' 60 dollars?! For a record? Hey, look. You must look at my husband, and mistake crazy for stupid. He's not paying sixty dollars for a record, and if he does, [[CurseCutShort I'll kiss your]]--\\
''(cut to Al and Peggy entering their house, Al with the record in his hand, and Peggy wiping her mouth)''
* ''MenBehavingBadly'' writer Simon Nye has declared his hatred for this trope, considering it a sitcom cliché, and managed to get away with only using it once in the entire run of MBB (Ken has taken over the pub; Gary declares that he and Tony will not set foot in there again until Les is restored as barman -- Gilligan Cut to him and Tony convivially sharing a drink with Ken inside the pub).
* From ''Series/{{Merlin}}'' in the episode "To Kill the King", Morgana challenges Uther.
-->'''Uther:''' Take care child, or I'll have you restrained.\\
'''Morgana:''' You just try.\\
''(scene cuts to Morgan being dragged into a cell by the guards and chained to a wall)''
** From "The Gates of Avalon" comes two slightly more humorous examples:
--> '''Uther:''' If this were a time of war, I would have you flogged.\\
'''Merlin:''' (overeager grin) And as it's not, we'll forget it just this once?\\
''(cut to Merlin in the stocks)''\\
'''Merlin:''' I'd forgotten how much fun this is.\\
and then again, later:\\
'''Merlin:''' You know, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this whole deception lark.\\
''(cut to Merlin in the stocks. Again.)''
* ''Series/{{Monk}}'' has a number of interesting Gilligan Cuts.
** In "Mr. Monk and the Missing Granny", Monk and Sharona are seen at a homeless shelter. Monk asks if there is a more subtle disguise that will prevent them from standing out. Cuts to Monk and Sharona at the serving counter.
** In ''Mr. Monk Is on the Run Part Two'', Stottlemeyer makes Natalie promise not to look for Monk after he fakes his death. Natalie promises to leave him as is. She promises and....the scene cuts to her hurriedly packing a suitcase.
** In "Mr. Monk Buys a House", it happens twice in the same conversation between Monk and [[CrookedContractor "Honest" Jake Phillips]], when he announces he needs to repair some frayed wiring that's a fire hazard:
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' Adrian, I'm a surgeon. It's just gonna be like taking out an appendix - a little incision, snip, snip, snip, pop over with the wire, and the fixture, a little spackle, a little paint... ''[smiles while indicating "and then, good as new"]''
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Is it going to be, you know, like ''[imitates the sound of a drill]'' messy?
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' Nah, no way. You won't even know I was here!
-->''[Cuts to Jake punching a large and very messy hole all the way through the wall with his hammer, sending debris flying everywhere while Monk wears a face protector and cringes with every swing of Jake's hammer. After a few swings, Jake stops]''
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' Uh-oh.
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Uh-oh? Uh, again uh-oh? ''[Jake shakes his head vigorously]''
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' I do not like the look of this. All right, we've got a little problerino. It's what we call a "glitch".
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Yeah, yeah, okay.
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' You see this pipe? ''[taps at the one in question with his hammer]'' Right there? That's your primary water line. It's corroded.
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Of course it is.
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' Almost all the way through. Could burst any time. ''[turns to Monk]'' I thought-I thought that you got this place inspected!
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' I did! I did!
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' ''[incredulous]'' What, was the guy blind in both eyes? All right, listen to me, Adrian, I've gotta be honest with you, because I respect you very much: ''[points]'' this whole section has to go...
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Oh no!
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' ...right here, which means ''this'' wall, ''that'' wall, and this half of the floor.
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' What about that half?
-->'''"Honest" Jake Phillips:''' That's gonna have to come up, too. But I know a great plumber. His name is Ramone. They call him "Honest Ramone".
-->'''Adrian Monk:''' Of course they do. ''[Cuts to Monk and Natalie sitting on the stairs, cringing as Jake and Ramone hack away at the wall]''
* ''Series/MyHero'' season 1 episode 3 when George is trying to wash his super hero outfit.
-->'''George''' Tyler! Do you know how to work washing machines?
-->'''Tyler''' Do I know how to work washing machines?
-->''(cut to kitchen filled with bubbles)''
-->'''Tyler''' No
* A rare dramatic Gilligan Cut occurs in the ''MySoCalledLife'' episode "Life of Brian":
-->'''Brian:''' ''(voiceover)'' I vow to never again show up at Angela's door with some lame excuse!\\
''(cut to Brian at Angela's door talking to her dad about something he supposedly borrowed from her)''
* ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'' loves to put this trope in the mouths of the victim-movie's characters.
-->'''Character in {{Film/Mitchell}}''': I am not bringing that shipment in and that is final.
-->'''Tom Servo''': Doo-dle-oo-dle-oo-dle-oo, the shipment's in!
* ''Series/TheMentalist'': When Jane suggests to Lisbon that she should blackmail Ardiles in the fifth season, she asks how would she do that, since she has nothing on him. Jane then recommends her to turn to the most gossipy person she knows in search for a rumor that could get her leverage on Ardiles. Cue GilliganCut to Lisbon talking with [[GossipyHens Brenda]].
* ''Series/MythBusters''
** Reversed in an episode where they tested a bulletproof plexiglass, because Jamie said it was bulletproof. Jamie: "[[ExactWords I never said it was bulletproof]]". Cut to an older episode, with Jamie gesturing to the substance and saying "It'll stop a bullet". Repeated for comic effect.
** Also reversed on Adam during the ''AmericanGraffiti'' myth with his prediction of the outcome, which led to him popularizing the now-famous "[[IRejectYourReality I Reject Your Reality And Substitute My Own]]" line.
* In an episode of ''Series/NedsDeclassifiedSchoolSurvivalGuide'', to cheer Ned up and get him to stop thinking about Susie, Cookie and company intend to take Ned to a part of the school devoid of girls and flowers: the gymnasium. Cut to them arriving at the gym doors and entering...only to find that the Garden Club is using the space to build an Arbor Day float. In short, the room is filled with flowers and populated by girls.
** Later in the episode:
--> '''Ned''': Well then, I'm going to write Martin that tip. (Cut.) I can't think of one!
* ''{{Series/Psych}}'' uses this sometimes. One example from Season 5, episode 14, "The Polarizing Express" (and yes, it's a ChristmasEpisode), when Shawn and Gus are on a stakeout:
-->'''Gus''': Shawn, you need to try to take a nap. You look tired.
-->'''Shawn''': ''(scoffs)'' Gus. Don't be Keith Sweat now. I'm sharp as a tack.
-->''(scene fades to Shawn sleeping, with a superscript: "Exactly 7 minutes later")''
* In the ''Series/RumpoleOfTheBailey'' episode "Rumpole at Sea," Hilda wants to take a Mediterranean cruise. Rumpole doesn't. He tells Hilda to get one thing clear: that he is not going on any cruise ship, no, no, NO...[ship's foghorn blows]
* Creator/StephenColbert does this right before the interview with his first-act "mini guests". First, he furiously rails against something or someone in the intro, and then he cuts straight to welcoming that person to his show. "[...] I will never, in a million years, ever understand what Jake Tapper was thinking! Here to tell me what Jake Tapper was thinking, please welcome the host of 'This Week', Jake Tapper."
* Subverted in ''TheMightyBoosh'' when Howard refuses to dress as a panda, saying no man should ever be forced to do that. Cut to Vince dressed as a panda instead.
* In one episode of ''Series/{{Sherlock}}'', Sherlock is testifying in court against Moriarty, and launches into his typical lightning-fast deductions, stepping on the toes of almost everyone in the room. The judge finally calls him out on it, saying "Do you think you could go for just a few minutes WITHOUT SHOWING OFF?!" Sherlock opens his mouth to reply, and... the scene cuts to him being led into a cell.
* Variation both in the original series ''and'' TheMovie of ''TheBeverlyHillbillies'': Granny loudly declares her opposition to leaving, stating that they won't get her out of her rockin' chair. The next scene shows the truck packed and loaded, including Granny's rocker. Granny's still in it.
* ''Series/{{Wings}}''
** In the episode "Death Becomes Him", Joe and Brian accidentally fly the wrong corpse in for a funeral. Brian suggests that Joe masquerade as the dead man until they have time to switch the bodies.
-->'''Brian:''' Get in the box, Joe.\\
'''Joe:''' No! There is no way I am getting in that box.\\
''(cut to Joe in the casket at the funeral)''\\
'''Joe:''' ''(thinking)'' I can't believe I got in the box!
** Subverted in the episode "I've Got a Secret". Alex confides to Helen and Antonio that she once posed in {{Playboy}}. When Joe and Brian discover that Antonio knows a secret about Alex, they begin to badger him.
-->'''Joe:''' Come on. Tell us what you know.\\
'''Antonio:''' I can't. I won't. There is no way you're ever getting this out of me.\\
''(Cut to Lowell walking into the office later that day with a large stack of magazines)''\\
'''Lowell''' Okay, this is the last of them. Every {{Playboy}} from '85 to '89.
** However, the cut ends up being deceptive, as it was not Antonio who blabbed, but Helen.
* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'' and ''Series/{{Angel}}'' made frequent use of these.
** "Bad Eggs":
-->'''Willow:''' Maybe you could get Angel to help you find the Gorches.\\
'''Giles:''' Good idea. Strength in numbers.\\
'''Xander:''' Oh yeah. I see a lot of hunting getting done in that scenario.\\

''(cut to Buffy and Angel making out in the cemetery)''\\
'''Buffy:''' You know, this isn't hunting in the ''classical'' sense...

'''Cordelia:''' They've got the forbidden love of all time. They've been apart for months. Now he's suddenly human. I'm sure they're down there just having tea and crackers.\\
''(cut to Angel pouring himself some tea while Buffy munches on some crackers)''
** Plus, there's the scene that references the title of the episode. Buffy is in tears, and swear she will never forget that day. Then, the Elders press the ResetButton, and Buffy (along with everybody else except Angel) has forgotten everything that happened that day.
** "Over The Rainbow":
-->''(Angel and the gang get into a fight)''\\
'''Wesley:''' I think we're winning!\\

''(cut to Buffy dressed in a ConspicuousTrenchcoat and sunglasses, lurking behind Dave)''

** A flashback in "A Hole in the World" shows Fred packing up and moving to L.A., against the wishes of her parents. Fred promises them she'll live a boring life -- cut to the present day where [[BewareTheNiceOnes Fred]] is [[ScreamingWarrior screaming]] while [[KillItWithFire incinerating wall-hugging demon eggs]] in a sewer [[FireBreathingWeapon with a backpack flamethrower.]]

'''Dean:''' ''(outside)'' I don't trust him.
** In 7.01, when Dean has been caught breaking into a house:
-->'''Dr. Weiss:''' Don't move.
-->'''Dean:''' Look, I don't want to hurt you.
-->'''Dr. Weiss:''' ''(after a pause)'' I'm the one holding a shotgun, son.
-->'''Dean:''' Yeah, I realize that.
*** Cut to Sam and Bobby coming in to find the doctor and his wife gagged and tied to chairs.
-->'''Dean:''' Sam, Bobby, meet Dr. and Mrs. Weiss.
* In the first season of ''Series/TeenWolf'', Jackson is telling Lydia about a bunch of movies that he heard were good, but she keeps replying no to all of them, until Jackson finally snaps:

-->'''Jackson:''' Can somebody help me find The Notebook?
* ''TopGear''
** In series 5, episode 2, there are two in rapid succession.
-->'''James May:''' All you have to do [to enter the competition] is answer this very, very tricky automotive question: "Which Italian super car maker features a prancing horse on its logo?"\\
''(cut across the studio to Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond)''\\
'''Jeremy Clarkson:''' I have absolutely no idea...\\
'''Jeremy Clarkson:''' Uh, anyway... Ferrari! A couple of years ago, they introduced this amazing new hyper car called the F60, and we've been trying ever since to get hold of one.\\
''(assorted talk about the trouble they had, getting their hands on one to drive)''\\
'''Jeremy Clarkson:''' And then, out of the blue, Nick Mason, who's the drummer with PinkFloyd, telephoned to say that he's got an F60 which we could borrow, if we promised to plug his new book. Well, we aren't really allowed to plug stuff on ''Top Gear'', but I said to him, "Look, if we can have your F60, I'll slide a couple of references in, and I don't think any of the bigwigs'll notice...\\
''(cut to segment backed by the Pink Floyd track "Astronomy Domine")''
** It should be noted the rest of the segment was packed full of Pink Floyd tracks, as well as numerous "The only thing as awesome as this car is this book I've been reading" lines.
** Another example, from the Vietnam episode:
-->''(Hammond and May are sitting comfortably in a bar, drinking)''\\
'''Hammond:''' Do you think he's enjoying his first biking experience?\\
''(cut to Clarkson, riding a beat-up Vespa, decked out with a plethora of mirrors, most of which are reflecting the headlight directly into his eyes)''\\
** And from the same episode:
-->'''Clarkson:''' ''(voiceover)'' Still, at least I'd been assured it wouldn't rain.\\
''(fast cut to Clarkson, Hammond, and May riding their motorbikes in a teeming Vietnamese monsoon)''\\
'''Clarkson:''' Name an upside to this, mate! ''Name ONE upside!''\\
'''May:''' Well, you're not hot anymore, are you?
** And still from the same episode:
-->'''Clarkson''' ''(with his bike having broken down yet again)'' Still, at least my mates wouldn't leave me behind this time.\\
''(cut to Hammond and May driving away at top speed)''
** From series 16, episode 3, where they go to Albania:
--> '''Clarkson:''' ''(After reading a letter requesting a car test for the Albanian Mafia)'' This caused one hell of a row in the office. The producers said, 'We should go out to Albania and do the test,' and we said, 'No! We can't be seen to be helping the Mafia!' We were ''adamant''. We said, 'this is our line in the sand. We will, not, go.'\\
''(Cut to ferry from Corfu to Albania)''
* Episode 4 of ''Series/KamenRiderDragonKnight'' has Maya tell her friend she will not get coffee for anyone. The next scene has her getting coffee for the woman she is working with.
* ''Series/KrodMandoonAndTheFlamingSwordOfFire'' has an episode where Matt Lucas's character says to his girlfriend (who has just contracted a serious illness) that he is not going to let her die. The next scene has him crying over her grave.
* ''OneFootInTheGrave'' enjoys these. Example:
-->'''Victor:''' [[PunctuatedForEmphasis I. Do. Not. Want. A Dog!]]\\
''(cut to Victor building a kennel)''
* ''TheWestWing'': Josh has made a political deal that helps the White House but screws over Mandy, his old girlfriend:
-->'''Mandy:''' You know what the worst part about this is?\\
'''Lloyd Russell:''' Well, I think you dinged up your suspension pretty good.\\
'''Mandy:''' No, Lloyd, it's the party they're having, right now, in the West Wing, at my expense.\\
'''Russell:''' They're not having a party in the West Wing.\\
'''Mandy:''' I've worked with these people for two and a half years. They like to win and they like to gloat.\\
'''Russell:''' These people are professionals. A blow was struck against party unity today. No one is going to be gloating.\\
''(scene cut to Josh's office)''\\
'''Josh:''' Victory is mine, victory is mine. Great day in the morning, people, victory is mine!\\
''(everyone applauds as Josh dances and pounds on his chest)''
** Series/TheWestWing also had a variation with no actual cut. For example, when Joey is first introduced she repeatedly tells Josh she wants to meet the President, Josh tells her that absolutely will not happen, then the President walks in and introduces himself to Joey.
* ''60 Second Sitcoms'' were minute-long sitcom parodies (complete with opening and ending titles) that TV Land used to show between programs. One called ''Spin and Cutter'' was a parody of this trope.
-->''(spin and Cutter trudge into the living room)''\\
'''Spin:''' Thank goodness that's over!\\
'''Cutter:''' Yea. Well, one good thing...\\
'''Both together:''' At least YOU got that letter back!\\
''(they both look at each other as we cut to... both of them in a two-man horse costume)''\\
'''Spin:''' Wait, these aren't security guard costumes!\\
''(cut to the two of them in security guard uniforms breaking into an office)''\\
'''Spin:''' Someone's coming! Quick, out on the ledge!\\
'''Cutter:''' That's dangerous! We're on the 40th floor!\\
'''Spin:''' More dangerous than the Boss finding us in his office after hours?\\
''(cut to Spin and Cutter as angels)''\\
'''Spin:''' Well, at least it can't get any worse.\\
'''Cutter:''' Spin, old buddy, for once I think you're right.
* Ron Swanson in ''ParksAndRecreation'' promises Leslie that he and his psychotic ex-wife Tammy are just going outside for a quiet talk. Cut to them making out through the bars of their holding cells the next morning.
* Lampshaded by Pete in ''Series/ThirtyRock'':
-->'''Liz Lemon:''' [[TemptingFate How could Tracy possibly get in trouble on a walking tour of Boston?]]\\
'''Pete:''' SmashCut [[MediumAwareness to...]]
** Played straight in season 3, episode 21:
-->'''Kenneth:''' ''(showing several guests of Jack's around)'' And this is the backstage area.
-->'''Jack:''' Kenneth, I'd like to speak with Mr. Green for a moment.
-->'''Kenneth:''' And as head of this tour, I'm going to deny your request.
-->''(SmashCut, almost before Kenneth even finishes the word "request", to Jack's office where he's sitting with Milton Green.)''
* In the ''Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine'' episode "Visionary":
-->'''Sisko:''' And Major, when you're with the Romulans, try to be... diplomatic.\\
'''Kira:''' [[FieryRedhead I'm]] [[BlatantLies always]] [[HotBlooded diplomatic!]]\\
''(cut to Major Kira meeting with Romulans)''\\
'''Kira:''' That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard and I resent the implication!
** In "Take Me Out to the Holosuite," Sisko has assembled his own baseball team to take on his Academy rival, Solok. When Cassidy asks him why he's taking it so seriously, he tells her about how Solok has spent his life flaunting his own superiority, and then makes her promise not to tell the team. One scene transition later, she's told the team everything.
* ''Series/YesPrimeMinister'' does this in the episode "One of Us":
-->'''Hacker:''' Don't discuss this with Arnold until I've spoken to him.\\
'''Humphrey:''' ''(indignant)'' Of course not, Prime Minister, I wouldn't dream of it.\\
''(cut to a visibly-distraught Humphrey taking a sip of wine)''\\
'''Humphrey:''' So what do you think I should do, Arnold?
* ''Series/{{Reba}}''
** In an episode, Reba's son-in-law becomes a driver in a pizza joint while having no vehicle of his own, so he requests Reba to drive him for deliveries. Reba refuses and refuses...and cut! In the next, scene she ''is'' driving her son-in-law for deliveries, albeit reluctantly.
** In an earlier episode, her ex-husband begs her to come with him to help him spread his father's ashes on a golf course. She declares, "Uh-uh! Those [[PuppyDogEyes puppy-dog eyes]] aren't gonna work on me anymore!" Cut to the golf course, where she stands next to him holding a rake.
* The ''ICarly'' special ''iQuit iCarly'' had this:
''(cut to Spencer and Gibby being thrown into a garbage dumpster)''\\
'''Spencer:''' ...They have our boat.
* In the ''{{Victorious}}'' episode "The Wood":
-->'''Beck:''' The producers took two seperate phone conversations and cut them together!\\

''(Tori holds her hands out in questioning; cut to the Black Box theater)''\\
'''Producer:''' ''Yeah'', we took two seperate phone calls and cut them together.
* ''Series/TheSarahJaneAdventures'' episode "The Nightmare Man Part 1" features this exchange:
-->'''Luke:''' Are you really gonna make scrambled egg? Remember what happened last time?\\
'''Sarah Jane:''' I think I can manage.\\
''(cut to Clyde reading a text message from Luke)''\\
'''Clyde:''' "Mum just set the kitchen on fire again."
* Done in reverse order in the BackToFront ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' episode "The Betrayal":
-->'''FDR:''' Are--are you dense? I said I wanted you to drop dead. Now... drop dead!\\
''(slams the door in Kramer's face)''\\
'''Kramer:''' I knew it... Stupid Jerry...\\
''(cut to Jerry's apartment, ten minutes earlier)''\\
'''Jerry:''' Kramer, I know what I'm talking about. There's no way FDR wants you to drop dead.
* ''Series/{{Taxi}}''. A Gilligan Cut without the cut: the gang is helping Jim out at his new bar. Jim hears that Alex plays piano and loudly introduces him as a performer. Alex adamantly states that he won't play -- a gorgeous woman sidles up to him and purrs "I'd ''love'' to hear 'Ebb Tide'." Alex promptly launches into "Ebb Tide".
* In the ''NoOrdinaryFamily'' episode "No Ordinary Quake", Jim & Stephanie are talking about how to test their son JJ for superpowers
-->'''Jim:''' So what're you going to do, honey? You gonna tell your son you don't believe him and, what, ask him for his DNA?\\
'''Stephanie:''' I think I can come up with a more subtle approach.\\
''(cut to Stephanie the next day, placing a cup on the table in front of JJ)''\\
'''JJ:''' You want me to pee in a cup?
* Played with, perhaps unintentionally, in the ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' episode "Spectre of the Gun": the group decide they'll wait right here until 5:00, when they're scheduled for the shootout at the OK Corral (ItMakesSenseInContext), but are instantly teleported there.
* This happened at least once per episode in ''Johnny Tolengo'', where Juan Carlos Calabró played a snarky pop singer half his own age.
* In the US version of ''Series/{{Shameless}}'', Sheila gets upset when Frank asks her to make some phonecalls for him without asking questions ([[ItMakesSenseInContext it makes sense in context]]). To make it right and get his way, Frank offers to disguise himself any way she likes, and there would be no safe word. Cut to Sheila happily making the phonecalls after that.
* From an episode of ''Series/SledgeHammer'', when it's suggested that the police hold a fund-raising telethon:
-->'''Captain Trunk:''' That is the most preposterous thing that I have ever heard! We will have a telethon over my dead body!\\
''(cut to Trunk singing "[[StandardSnippet Hava Nagila]]" at the telethon)''
* In the ''Series/SpartacusBloodAndSand'' episode "The Thing in the Pit", Spartacus is condemned to fight in the pits, as is Kerza.
-->'''Kerza:''' I'm not dying in the pits. I'll show these cunts. My cock was forged in Vulcan's flames! I will [[PunctuatedForEmphasis fuck! Them! All!!]]\\
''(cut to Kerza in the Pit, getting beaten to death)''
* In the BBC adaptation of ''[[Literature/MissMarple The Body in the Library]]'', Colonel Bantry's "I am ''not'' going downstairs to ask if there is a body in my library" is instantly disproved.
* In part two of the ''Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder''/''[[Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm Ninja Storm]]'' crossover episode, Blake insists that there's absolutely no way he's going to follow Hunter and Cam into the Abyss of Evil to reclaim their powers. Cut to him wearing a helmet and rappelling gear, stating once more for the record that he thinks this is a bad idea before they begin climbing down.
* From ''TheWorstWitch'' when Mildred is having trouble with her part in the broomstick tableau:
--> '''Maud:''' It'll be fine, you'll see. Everything will go click.
-->''Cut to Mildred crashing into the bins on her broomstick''
--> '''Mildred:''' You call that 'going click'?
* ''RizzoliAndIsles'': In "Seventeen Ain't So Sweet", we cut from Jane telling Maura that there is no way she is going to her high school reunion, to Jane and Maura at Jane's high school reunion.
* ''Series/LawAndOrderUK'' DS Ronnie Brooks is musing over the possible location of evidence in an assault case. His gaze turns towards a Dumpster. Following his gaze and realizing what he's thinking, his partner DS Matt Devlin yelps, "NO! ''No way'', Ron!" Sure enough, the next scene is of the two of them at the garbage dump, sifting through the trash, with Matt griping and complaining the entire time while Ronnie gleefully teases him.
** In another episode, the detectives want to review evidence from an old case and realize that they need to discuss things with the CPS. Their superior mentions that CP Alesha Phillips was the prosecutor on the case, at which point, she and Brooks give Devlin a look, to which he gives a very startled DoubleTake. The next scene is of Devlin trying to sweet-talk Alesha into giving them the necessary files. (To be fair, we never see him refusing to do this, but he's clearly not thrilled about having to use their mutual attraction to garner information from her).
* ''{{Scrubs}}'': In the episode "My Porcelain God", the Janitor accuses J.D. of telling people about the roof toilet (after he had asked him not to earlier in the episode). J.D. responds, "first of all, why would I tell anyone? And secondly, no one has epiphanies on the john!" Cut to Dr. Cox having an epiphany on the roof toilet, presumably giving him the idea to put a patient in Dr. Kelso's office when there are no beds elsewhere.
** In one episode, Elliot talks about how great [[RomanticFalseLead her fiancee Keith]] is, saying he would walk through fire for her. A Gilligan Cut shows the Janitor trying to convince Keith to ''[[LiteralMetaphor literally]]'' walk through fire to prove the his love for Elliot, though Keith refuses to.
* ''AustinAndAlly'': A staple of the comedy on the show. They happen repeatedly and often back to back in the same scene. Sometimes they don't even do a cut, they just have the person wander into the shot doing the Gilligan action. An example from ''My Tab & My Pet'' where the group have to wait in line for a new computer tablet:
-->''Ally'': I wish I didn't have to work today, I need to be in that line.
-->''Trish'': Relax, it's not like Dez is there by himself, Austin is with him and Austin would never leave the line.
-->''Austin'': *Enters ''Sonic Boom''* Hey guys. I left the line.
-->''Ally'': Why?
-->''Austin'': I needed a break.
-->''Ally'': You left Dez there by himself?
-->''Austin'': It's only been 5 minutes, do you think Dez is just gonna let people go in front of him?
-->GilliganCut to Dez letting people in front of him.
* A recurring bit in ''ThatMitchellAndWebbLook,'' is "Get Me Hennimore!" an AffectionateParody of [[TheSeventies seventies sitcoms]], every sketch beginning with Hennimore's boss setting up an obvious opportunity for Hennimore to botch (such as showing a recovering alcoholic a set of antique golf clubs with an identical-looking novelty liquor cabinet nearby) and getting his assurance that he'll get it right this time, at which point the sketch immediately cuts to the "end of the episode," with the boss walking in on the extremely predictable disaster.
* In the ''Series/BoardwalkEmpire'' episode "Family Limitations", Margaret asks Eddie whether Nucky is nice man, which Eddie confirms he is. Then we cut to Nucky in his office insulting Luciano.
* One episode of ''Series/TeenWolf'' starts with Jackson and Lydia sitting in Lydia's car outside a video rental store, Jackson trying and failing to convince Lydia to watch ''Film/{{Hoosiers}}''. Finally, he gets frustrated with her complete dismissal of his opinion, and this happens:
-->'''Jackson''' I am ''not'' watching ''Film/TheNotebook'' again!
-->''(cut to Jackson inside the store)''
-->'''Jackson:''' Can somebody help me find ''Film/TheNotebook''?
* ''Series/ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphia'' loves to play with this trope with the episode title cards. For example:
-->'''Mac:''' You guys have nothing outside this bar.
-->'''Dennis Reynolds:''' Don't worry, Mac. We'll be just fine.
-->''(Cut to title card: "Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare")''
** Or even more bluntly:
-->'''Dee Reynolds:''' There's no way I'm dating a retarded person.
--> ''(Cut to title card: "Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person")''
* ''Series/OnceUponATime:''

* A very early episode of ''Series/{{Zoey 101}}'' had this, when Zoey is telling Chase about how living with Quinn is giving her a hard time:
-->'''Chase:''' You can't just look a girl in the face and say, "I don't want to live with you anymore."\\
''(cut to Quinn's room where she is looking at Zoey)''\\
'''Quinn:''' Zoey, I don't want to live with you anymore.
* ''Series/ColdCase'': In "Saving Sammy", Valens and Vera go to interview a witness who is autistic. Valens tells Vera to take his yellow tie as the witness does not like the colour yellow. Vera refuses. The next shot has them walking into the autistic boy's room. Vera is not wearing his tie.
* ''Series/{{Hustle}}'': In "Picasso Finger Painting", we cut from Sean protesting there is no way he is going back to Mad Dolly's to Sean at Mad Dolly's, still protesting.
* DobieGillis was the first American TV show to use this extensively. In fact it could be argued that it deserves to be called a Dobie Cut, since almost all of them happened as a reaction to something said while addressing the audience.
* Done in the ''Series/DoctorWho'' bio-documentary special ''Film/AnAdventureInSpaceAndTime'', when Verity is trying to sell William Hartnell on the idea of the series. When she describes the "state of the art facilities", we cut to the Lime Grove studio in disrepair and when she talks about how the sound effects are created with the latest technology, we cut to FX wizard Delia Derbyshire scraping metal keys across piano strings to create the signature TARDIS sound effect.
* ''Series/RaisingHope'' features one of [[BlackComedy the darkest takes]] on this trope in the pilot episode, when Lucy, eight months pregnant and on Death Row, tells Jimmy, "There's no way they're gonna kill the mother of a six-month old baby!" Cut to the witness area, with Jimmy and the baby in attendance as she gets put in the electric chair.

''(Cut to Lister and The Cat scrubbing floors)''

''(Cut to a {{montage}} of everyone Jimmy and Gretchen interacted with during the episode, about to have their hearts broken/lives ruined.)''

* Machinima/Supermarioglitchy4sSuperMario64Bloopers: Parodied (and possibly PlayedForLaughs) in "Boil the Big Bully":
-->'''Bully Boss:''' The only way I can let you live is if you can transform into a Pepsi machine...\\
'''Mario:''' Hmm...\\
''(Cut to a room in Peach's Castle, with Mario as a Pepsi machine. Mario barfs out soda and a moment after closes his mouth. He then burps.)''\\
'''Mario as a Pepsi Machine:''' Hey! That was pretty good!

* Parodied in a sketch on ''Radio/JohnFinnemoresSouvenirProgramme'' about a {{sitcom}} character [[WrongGenreSavvy trying to get by in real life]]. On one occasion, he's asked to do something silly for charity, and outright refuses to do it. He then starts preparing for it anyway, to the confusion of the other characters who've, naturally, [[RealityEnsues already arranged for someone else to do it]].
* In the radio play adaptation of ''[[Franchise/{{Tintin}} Tintin in Tibet]]'', Haddock is reluctant in tagging along on a trip to Kathmandu.
-->'''Haddock:''' I'm not going! And when I say "no", I ''mean'' "no"!\\
'''Haddock:''' [[AsYouKnow So, we're in Kathmandu...]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/FengShui'', in keeping with the action/comedy genre, actively advised this as a way of resolving disputes with recalcitrant players. If one person adamantly refuses to go along with something, Gilligan Cut to him going along with it anyway.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''Flight of the Amazon Queen''. Joe King escapes from the hotel room he was locked up in, but is caught by two goons at the hotel entrance.

'''King:''' Oh yeah? What are you going to do? Take my clothes from me?\\
''(cut to Joe King back in his room, in underwear)''\\
'''King:''' Me and my big mouth...
* There's a text one at the start of ''Big Shell Evil'' in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid 2'''s "Snake Tales". '''Jorge-052:''' Still can't believe Holland said yes to this.

She's hostile from the moment he introduces himself as an expert in satanic studies and tells him to get out, even more when he suggests that the owner of the shop can help him with his research. She angrily spits out that the owner, her father, committed suicide two months before. After pulling his foot from his mouth, the hero awkwardly offers the girl to make it up to her with a cup of coffee. She replies that she should say "no"... cut to them in bed.

** Far earlier, in the "I can Fly" arc, Dr. Lee realized Tip was bullshitting her:

* ''Webcomic/RomanticallyApocalyptic'': [[http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/83 GOD DAMN IT]]

* In ''BobAndGeorge'', [[http://www.bobandgeorge.com/archives/000420c Protoman is confident that his replacement can handle Dr. Wiley. Cut to Dr. Light musing that Protoman may be right about the folly of uselessly arming household servants.]]
* Happens twice when Nat is sick in ''Webcomic/SatanAndMe''.
* ''Webcomic/SketchComedy'': inverted [[http://thesketchy.com/ic/2011/04/12/minecraft-drama here]]: three panels of a dramatic duel between Howard the Wizard and Death, then a cut to Karen expressing her relief that the comic lately has been drama-free.

-->'''Gavin:''' I've got a plan B.\\
'''Tariq:''' What? We pay in gardening?\\
''(cut to Tariq digging in the garden)''\\
'''Tariq:''' I was only joking!\\
'''Gavin:''' Oh, come on! You missed -- you missed a bit there. It's not forever! And just think about what we're getting for it.\\
''(cut to a dusty old garage full of cardboard boxes)''\\
'''Tariq:''' I thought you said it was perfect!

'''Crow:''' Hold me.
* A veritable RunningGag of WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic. He's constantly thinking that movies could only be made sillier, stupider, or worse if they do the ''one thing''... that they're about to do.

* One happens during the ''WebVideo/TwoBestFriendsPlay'' video of ''VideoGame/{{Portal 2}}'' when Chell is going through GLaDOS's old chamber:

* ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnold'' absolutely loves this trope.
** "Arnold as Cupid", S1:
-->'''Oscar:''' Don't worry, Arnold, I can't lose. ''(cut)'' ...I can't believe I lost.
** "Das Subway", S1:
-->'''Helga:''' No subway for me. Not no way, not no how. I am '''NOT''' taking the subway. ''(cut)'' ...I can't believe I'm taking the subway.
** "Big Caesar", S2:
-->'''Gerald:''' No way, Arnold. There's ''no way'' we're fishing in a swan boat. ''(cut)'' ...I can't believe we're fishing in a swan boat.

-->'''Arnold:''' Stinky, we are '''not''' calling our go-cart the ''Mauve Avenger''. ''(cut)'' ...I cannot believe we called our go-cart the ''Mauve Avenger''.
** "Dinner for Four", S3:
-->'''Helga:''' Look, I am ''not'' gonna go back in there, tell them the truth, and [[WorkOffTheDebt wind up washing dishes]]. ''(cut)'' ...I can't believe I told them the truth, and I wound up washing dishes.
** "[[BrokeEpisode Rhonda Goes Broke]]":
-->'''Rhonda:''' You may have lost your dignity, but I certainly haven't lost mine! There is no way I am recycling old bottles and cans ''to pay for my LUNCH!''\\
''(cut to Rhonda prowling through a dumpster)''
* ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''
** DoubleSubversion in the episode "Death is a Bitch". Death asks Peter to take over for him by crashing a plane full of people, and Peter absolutely refuses.
-->'''Peter:''' Forget it, Death, I'm not gonna do your dirty work! There's no way I'm getting on that plane! Absolutely no way, and that's final.\\
''(cut to Peter, still standing in place)''\\
'''Peter:''' See, I'm still here and there's nothing you can say that'll change my mind.\\
'''Death:''' Either you kill them or I kill you.\\
''(cut to Peter on the plane)''
** In another episode:
-->'''Lois:''' Peter, I'm getting a little worried about Chris. All he does lately is sit alone in his room talking to that zit.\\
'''Peter:''' Relax, Lois. What's a zit gonna do? Talk to him and tell him to sneak out of the house and cause trouble?\\
''(cut to Chris having already snuck out of the house)''\\
'''The zit:''' Now light it, ring the doorbell, and run like hell!
** Subverted in the episode "The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire". Peter remarks that he and Brian shouldn't tell Cleveland that his wife is having an affair. That's the last thing they want to do. Gilligan Cut to Peter and Brian having done everything else in the world, so since there's nothing left to do, they might as well tell Cleveland that his wife had an affair.
*** And in the same episode, after Peter and Brian have found out that Quagmire was the one who slept with Loretta, Quagmire begs them not to tell Cleveland, which Peter says he won't do. Cut to Cleveland at the Griffins' house, where Peter is telling him just that.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Freakazoid}}'' provides a subversion. Freakazoid declares emphatically he is not going into the sewers after Cobra Queen. We cut to the sewers; the camera pans around, but Freakazoid isn't there. Cut to him sitting at home, watching ''WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}}''.
-->'''Freakazoid:''' ''([[AsideGlance to audience]])'' See? I said I'd never go.
** Ultimately double subverted, however; after a commercial break, Freakazoid's down in the sewers on his way to confront Cobra Queen.
** Later Invoked (and outright lampshaded) in "Candlejack", where Freakazoid encounters a villain who can only capture those who say his name aloud.
-->'''Steph:''' Don't say his name!\\
'''Freakazoid:''' You mean, don't say "Candlejack?"\\
''(Cut to Freakazoid being tied up with everyone else.)''\\
'''Steph:''' ''(disappointed)'' Freakazoid, why did you say his name?\\
'''Freakazoid:''' ''(overly excited)'' 'Cuz I wanted to one of those really funny things, like in -- you ever watch ''Series/FTroop'' where Agarn says, "There's no way I'm wearing a dress! Absolutely not! No dress," and Forrest Tucker's like, "Yeah, you're wearing that dress, you're gonna wear that dress," and then they wipe -- [[SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud blrblrblrbllrbrl]] -- and Agarn's wearing a dress.\\
''(Cut to such a scene from ''F Troop'')''\\
'''Agarn:''' ''(in a high-pitched falsetto)'' Yoo-hoo! Loco Brothers! Look who's here for you!\\
''(Cut back to ''Freakazoid'')''\\
'''Candlejack:''' Oooh, I love that bit!
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}''
** ''Without'' a cut in "A Fishful of Dollars":
-->'''Fry:''' What a weird dream! I'll never get back to sleep! ''(falls back into bed)''
** "Obsoletely Fabulous" Has this gem:
--> '''Sinclair:''' Why would you wanna watch TV when you can watch a snail crawl for hours on end?
--> '''Bender:''' That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
-->''(Cut to the robots watching a snail crawl.)''
--> '''Bender:''' Oh, man! He's never gonna make it over that next pebble! Wait, wait! Oh, my God! He made it!
** In the episode "Time Keeps on Slippin'", time-skips are setting up natural Gilligan Cuts. Though oddly this is a bit of a subversion as a subplot is Fry (and the audience) trying to figure out what worked.
-->'''Leela:''' ''(on Fry loving her)'' I appreciate it, but nothing you can do will ever, ever make me...\\
'''Preacherbot:''' ... man and wife!
** There is also this one, after Fry asks to enter the basketball game against the Harlem Globetrotters:
-->'''Fry:''' We're 35 points ahead with two minutes left. What could possibly--\\
''(Time-skip to Fry holding the ball; the crowd boos as a Globetrotter takes the ball and scores)''\\
'''Marv Albert's head:''' Globetrotters win, 244-86.
** The children in a localized skip:
-->''(Child 1 watches old man walk out of the SSI office)''\\
"Stupid senior citizens. Why should we have to pay for their social security benefits?"\\
''(local time skip to them being elderly)''\\
"I deserve free money!"
** Everyone is trying to figure out how to stop the time skips:
-->'''Hermes:''' I think I know how to stop the time skips. We'll just...\\
''(time skip to everyone in a naked conga line)''\\
'''Hermes:''' I don't know how this was supposed to work.
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark''
** "Woodland Critter Christmas":
-->'''Narrator:''' So he [Stan] picked up the cubs and down the mountain he stormed, and took them to where abortions are performed.\\
'''Stan:''' No, he didn't.\\
'''Narrator:''' Yes, he did.\\
'''Stan:''' No, he didn't!\\
'''Narrator:''' Yes, he did.\\
'''Stan:''' No, he didn't!\\
'''Narrator:''' [[RuleOfThree Yes, he... (cut) ...did!]]\\
'''Stan:''' Aw, God damn it!
** Used twice in the episode "Butt Out": first, a team of cheesy motivational performers visit the school assembly to discourage smoking:
-->'''Actors:''' Remember kids, if you smoke, you could grow up to be a failure. Worse yet, you could grow up to be dead! So don't believe what those evil tobacco companies tell you! Yeah, because if you don't smoke, you could grow up to be just like us!\\
''(cut to the four boys coughing as they desperately smoke behind the school)''\\
'''Stan:''' Here, gimme another one, gimme another one!
** Also in "Butt Out":
-->'''Kyle:''' If we go to the tobacco company, I know exactly what will happen: they'll take us in, and then Rob Reiner will show up with all of the townspeople holding torches or something, and there'll be a big showdown until we talk about what we learned, and changed everyone's minds, this is all following a formula!\\
'''Stan:''' So it's either deal with all that, or get grounded for three weeks...\\
''(cut to the townspeople surrounding the tobacco company, holding flaming torches)''\\
'''Kyle:''' God dammit!
** From "Tsst":
-->'''Cartman:''' ''(Who is residing beside a trash bin in the rain)'' This is BULLCRAP! Mom'll break soon. I can outlast her.\\
''(Cut to his house, where Liane is making a calligraphic painting and he arrives)''\\
'''Cartman:''' Alright, I'm back.
** "Asspen" opens with all the boys' parents having drinks together, and the Stotches saying how glad they are that Butters finally seems to have finally made some close friends. Cut to the kids watching TV, and Cartman urinating on Butters while he's asleep.
* ''DrawnTogether'' had one episode where Foxxy Love was vehemently protesting she would not run a suicide hotline, only to have her agree to it after the cut. She lampshades it by muttering "Goddamnit!".
* Played with in ''CourageTheCowardlyDog''. Muriel decides to take Eustace and Courage on vacation, but Eustace insists that he's not getting out of his chair. Cut to a view of the boat sailing off. Then cut to Eustace sitting in the same chair on the deck of the boat. "Nope. Not getting out of this chair."
** This is almost certainly borrowed from ''TheBeverlyHillbillies'', as mentioned above.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBatman'' provides a bit of an odd example in "Artifacts":
-->'''Mr. Freeze:''' The cryo-chamber. Cold enough to put me on ice until someone wakes me up and puts me back together.\\
'''Gray:''' ''(Who is thousands of years in the future)'' Still can't believe some fool woke Frost up and put him back together.
* ''George Shrinks''. Becky asks George if anyone will mind the fact he's taken a number of parts from household objects to build his ghost catching machine. George says that they won't even miss them. Cut to Junior finding the wheels off his toy car gone, Mom noticing the vacuum cleaner has had parts ripped from it and Dad finding his tape deck has vanished.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'' episode "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy", Professor Membrane explains that any attempt to travel back in time and change history is [[ButterflyOfDoom likely to create a future that is worse for the traveler (or cause, say, a giant fish in a bear suit to attack Tokyo).]] The Professor finishes, [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough "Anyone who would want to build a space-time object replacement device is a complete moron!"]] Of course, the next thing we see is Zim saying "Gir, the space-time object replacement device is ready!"
* ''WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants''
** {{Double subver|sion}}ted in the episode "Born Again Krabs". Mr. Krabs prepares to take a bite out of an old, filthy, tainted patty. Just as he is about to bite down on it, the shot cuts to an ambulance, implying that Krabs was now being rushed to the hospital. As it turns out, the ambulance was only passing by the Krusty Krab. Krabs comments on it, then takes a bite out of the patty, and the cut is played straight afterwards.
** Played straight in "Can You Spare a Dime?". After quitting his job, Squidward claims that the town will soon be eating out of the palm of his hand. Cut to him sitting in a box asking for change from people walking by.
* Done on ''WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy'' in the episode "Sir Ed-A-Lot", where Sarah forces the Eds to play "princess" with her:
-->'''Eddy:''' Next thing you know she's gonna want a throne.\\
''(scene transition to later, with Sarah sitting on a makeshift throne)''\\
'''Eddy:''' ''(raises glass)'' A toast, to my big mouth!
* ''WesternAnimation/SonicSatAM'' has this (part of a plan to steal Robotnik's materials):
-->'''Sonic:''' A hedgehog never gives up.\\
''(cuts to middle of Robotropolis)''\\
'''Sonic:''' [[ISurrenderSuckers I give up!]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''
** Variation on the trope in the episode "Burns Baby Burns". Mr. Burns's son, an uncultured slacker voiced by Rodney Dangerfield, finds his father. Appalled by Larry Burns' antics, Burns disowns him. A saddened Larry walks late at night with Homer, trying to find some way of regaining his father's love.
-->'''Homer:''' Larry, there's only one sure way to make him realize how much he loves you, and that is a phony kidnapping!\\
'''Larry:''' Yeah, right. I dunno. Maybe I should just leave town.\\
'''Homer:''' ''(sing-songy)'' Phony kidnapping.\\
'''Larry:''' Nah, I know what I gotta do. I gotta clean up my act. ''(dramatic music swells)'' No more joking around all the time, no more slacking off at work, and most important, no more booze! I know I can do it!\\
''(cut to Burns at his front door, holding a note)''\\
'''Burns:''' ''(reading)'' Your son has been kidnapped.
** Double Subverted in another episode, when Homer accidentally leaves Maggie at a convent and they won't give her back. When coming up with a plan, Homer says he absolutely won't dress up like a nun. Cut forward to him...reaffirming he isn't dressed as a nun. Then Lisa says they don't need him to, and then he says "You sure?" and goes off screen for a second and comes back dressed as a nun saying that he has the costume already.
** During a DocumentaryEpisode titled "Springfield Up":
-->'''Declan Desmond:''' Are you two considering children?\\
'''(24-Year-Old) Homer:''' ''(scoffs)'' Kids? No way. You'll never see a couple of rug-rats tying me down.\\
''(cut to 8 years later with baby Bart and Lisa)''\\
'''(32-Year-Old) Homer:''' You better not put this shot after the one where I said I won't have kids. That would be a devastating edit.
** In "King-Size Homer":
-->'''Ralph:''' I heard your dad went to a restaurant and ate everything in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant.
-->'''Lisa:''' Hey, my dad may have gained a little weight, but he's not some kind of food-crazed maniac.
-->''(Homer drives by in a stolen ice-cream truck, vigorously stuffing his face.)''
*** ZigZagged, maybe, because Homer was actually using the truck to rush to the nuclear power plant to prevent a meltdown (and eventually succeeded), but seeing as Lisa didn't know that, it was still embarrassing.
** In "The Front":
-->'''Lisa:''' It's so sad that Krusty is ashamed of his roots.
-->''Homer walks into the living room with a plunger on his head''
-->'''Homer:''' Marge, it happened again!
-->'''Bart:''' What are you going to change your name to when you grow up?
-->'''Lisa:''' Lois Sandborne.
-->'''Bart:''' Steve Bennett.
* In ''WesternAnimation/SuperMarioWorld'': "What are they going to do? Banish us to the lava pit?" One cut later....
* ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfJimmyNeutronBoyGenius'' "Out, Darn Spotlight":
-->'''Jimmy:''' Ah, no big deal. I didn't really want to be in this play. ''(Cut)'' YOU GOTTA PUT ME IN THIS PLAY! I'LL DO ANYTHING! Even... ''(clears throat)'' Stage crew.
* ''WesternAnimation/KimPossible'''s brothers are suffering a bad cold and she's trying to keep them from sneezing everywhere:
-->'''Kim:''' I do ''not'' want to catch this.\\
''(cut to Kim in bed with a cold)''\\
'''Kim:''' How did I catch this?
** In the same episode, Ron and Doctor Drakken also catch colds after making similar statements.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/AlvinAndTheChipmunks'' episode, "Carsick", Dave and the Chipmunks are coming home from a long car ride. Simon and Theodore are starting to feel ill, but Alvin arrogantly says, "I ''never'' get sick!" Then it cuts to show Alvin in bed with a thermometer in his mouth.
* ''[[Disney/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians 101 Dalmatians: The Series]]'' has several different examples of these:
** In "Home Is Where the Bark Is", after Lucky says, "We are not moving," it cuts to show the pups moving.
** In "Shake, Rattle and Woof", when the pups notice the animals wearing embarrassing costumes, Lucky says, "You'll never see me in one of those get-ups!" Then comes the Gilligan Cut showing Lucky in an Elvis Presley costume.
** In "Walk a Mile In My Tracks", Pug's final test is egg-sitting. At first, Cadpig says that will be "easy-peasy"...that is until after the Gilligan Cut when it is revealed that Pug has to sit on the world's largest egg!
* In one episode of ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'':
-->'''Candace:''' Yes, they're building something. But I've realized that the problem is I always jump the gun. So I'm gonna wait until just the right moment... ''(stops and looks panicked)''\\
'''Stacy:''' Candace? Hello?\\
''(cut to Candace running with her phone in her hand)''\\
'''Candace:''' They're on the move, I'll bust them now! I'll bust them now!
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender''
** In "The Cave of Two Lovers", after the Gaang decides not to go through the tunnel:
-->''(an extremely large number of catapults shoot at them)''\\
'''All three main characters:''' AAAAHHHHH!\\
''(cut to them on the ground, singed)''\\
'''Sokka:''' Secret love cave, let's go.
** In "Runaway", Aang solemnly gives his "Avatar promise" not to go scamming people again. Cut, and we see a montage of them doing exactly that.
** In "The Puppetmaster", the gang is staying at a creepy inn. After hearing some creaky noises arround the inn, Sokka is, of course, completely scared shitless. Talking to Momo, he says, "I know, Momo, I'm scared too, I'll never be able to sleep like this." Cut, and we see Sokka deep asleep, snoring loudly, and drooling all over the pillow.
** In "Bitter Work", Toph is trying to teach Aang Earthbending, but he's having a little trouble doing it right. When Katara suggests Toph go easy on Aang, giving him "a little nudge in the right direction" to help him learn faster, Toph answers she's going to try that. Cut to an intense TrainingMontage where Toph is basically going DrillSergeantNasty on Aang.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddparents''
** A scene from episode "Nectar of the Odds", when Timmy wants to raise money to buy some shockingly expensive tickets from Francis to see Crash Nebula on ice:
-->'''Wanda:''' How do most ten-year-olds make money?\\
'''Timmy:''' A lemonade stand...oh no, there's ''no'' way, ''no'' way I'm selling...\\
''(cut to Timmy at the lemonade stand)''\\
'''Timmy:''' ... lemonade, twenty-five cents.
** Also, earlier in the same episode, it inverts this:
-->'''A.J.:''' What are you gonna do? Make three tickets appear like magic?\\
''(Timmy grins; cut to his home)''\\
'''Timmy:''' What do you mean I can't make three tickets appear like magic?!
** And in "Foul Balled":
-->'''Timmy:''' Stop laughing at my friend. You're still down 29 runs with 1 inning left. There's no way you can catch us!\\
''(10 minutes later, the Bankees are one run behind the Losers)''\\
'''Chester:''' I can't believe they're about to catch us.
** And in "Parent Hoods" when Timmy's parents are arrested by cops who confused them with the [[OutlawCouple Souvenir Bandits]] because [[CriminalDoppelganger they look exactly like them]]:
-->'''Timmy's Dad:''' We'll be out in no time. I'm confident that our American Justice System will see us through.\\
''(cut to Timmy's parents being tortured in prison)''\\
'''Timmy's Dad:''' Uh, this may take longer than I thought.
** And later in that same episode after Timmy's Dad accidentally [[spoiler: broke the Sacred Silver Sharpener]]:
-->'''Timmy's Dad:''' Now, now, darling, snugglebutt, don't worry. It was just an accident.\\
'''Timmy:''' Besides, I'm confident that our Canadian Justice System will see us through.\\
''(cut to Timmy and his parents being tortured in prison)''\\
'''Timmy:''' Uh, this may take longer than I thought.
** The list goes on...
* Also done in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'', when Danny comes up with an idea involving overshadowing Tucker:
-->'''Tucker:''' No way. Forget it. Absolutely not! NO!\\
''(cut to a scene where Tucker is overshadowed)''
** Oh the one in ''Mystery Meat'' has the (in)famous Meat vs Veggie related one.
-->'''Danny''': (in bed) Ah...Well, I'm sure everything will be back to normal by tomorrow.
--> *''Next day...''*
-->'''Danny''': Or ''not''. Maybe it'll be worse.
* An episode of ''WesternAnimation/DuckTales'' has Fenton tell his girlfriend that he'll be able to take a day off of work to go on a date with her. He says, "My boss never says no to me," but then it violently cuts to Scrooge saying "No!" to Fenton.
* From ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'' Christmas episode "For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls":
-->'''Stan:''' I promise I will not buy Steve a gun for Christmas.\\
''(cut to Stan handing Steve a machine gun)''\\
'''Stan:''' Happy Wednesday, son!
** From the first season episode "Stan of Arabia (Part II)"
-->'''Roger:''' Look, I don't know what you've heard about American girls, but we don't just jump into bed with someone we just met.\\
''(cut to Hayley in bed with a Saudi she just met)''
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic''
** Done in the episode "Call of the Cutie", ''without a cut'' thanks to the RuleOfPerception. With the camera close-up on her face, Apple Bloom insists that she isn't going to a party. After this, the camera zooms back out to show that the [[BehindTheBlack party had already started in the next room]].
** Done again, though with an actual cut, in the episode "Cutie Mark Chronicles," when the kids get bored listening to the adult ponies' various stories.
-->'''Scootaloo:''' These mamby-pamby stories aren't getting us any closer to getting our cutie marks... We need action, we need Rainbow Dash!\\
''(cut to Scootaloo looking very bored as Twilight Sparkle is now telling her story)''
* ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'', "Operation: CAKED-THREE". Numbuh Two explains his plan to attack the Delightful Children by using a weapon that uses "a kajillion eggs" as ammunition.
-->'''Numbuh One:''' That is brilliant!
-->''(Next scene, where the team decides to store the eggs in ''his'' room.)''
-->'''Numbuh One:''' This is '''stupid!'''
* ''WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow'', "Stimpy's Cartoon". When Stimpy finishes the eponymous cartoon, he rushes to arrange a meeting with (fictional) Golden Age cartoonist Wilbur Cobb. Ren quips "You're living in a dream world if you think the great Cobb'll see you!", which prompts a MatchCut to Ren in a suit, waiting with Stimpy in Wilbur Cobb's office.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheProblemSolverz''
** Done in "Videogamez".
-->'''Konishi:''' I warn you, though, the game is ''dangerous''. Don't let it suck you in.\\
'''Horace:''' No, it'll never suck us in.\\
''(cut to case identification card)''\\
"Case # 00101001: The Video Game That Sucks The Problem Solverz In."
** And again in "Fauxboro".
-->'''Alfe:''' Just don't tell Horace I've gone crazy.\\
'''Roba:''' Okay, I won't.\\
''(cut to Roba in Horace's room)''\\
'''Roba:''' He's gone crazy!
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePenguinsOfMadagascar''
** In the episode "Sting Operation", the title characters try to remove a hornets' nest, and fail.
-->"They took us by surprise that time. Took away our greatest weapons; stealth, and superior tactics. But that ain't gonna happen twice."\\
''(cut to the penguins being chased by angry hornets)''\\
