Deliberately writing a serious version of events related from a story which was originally quite lighthearted, "serious" in this case being more bleak, horrific, dark and/or possibly sadistic. Indeed, Dark Fic veritably ''wallows'' in (or savors) misery and darkness. This is sometimes satire, based on memes, or just writers flexing their creative muscles and showing us certain {{canon}}ical elements [[FridgeHorror that have the potential to be]] NightmareFuel. Or maybe the writer just [[ForTheEvulz enjoys depressing people]] with [[YouCouldHaveUsedYourPowersForGood their writing style]].

When badly done (especially when the original work was a comedy), it will do nothing but {{squick}} readers, who will [[DarknessInducedAudienceApathy quickly abandon it]]. [[{{Narm}} Or make people laugh]]. Well done, though, it can provide an intense and unsettling view of something supposedly familiar. [[BlackComedy Or it can make people laugh]].

The FanFic version of DarkerAndEdgier. Related to {{Grimmification}}. Often the result of FridgeHorror, in which case it is the fandom equivalent of AscendedFridgeHorror.

Contrast with FixFic. A Dark Fic may or may not be the end result of a DeconstructionFic. If the series was already dramatic and dark, it shouldn't really be here (e.g. it's impossible to make a dark fic of ''Series/TheWalkingDead'' unless you ''really'' take it to another level).

Comedies or series on the "idealistic" side of the SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism tend to inspire Dark Fic; similarly, "realistic" or darker stories inspire {{WAFF}} fanfic.

!!Examples (sorted by medium of origin)

!!Series with their own pages:
* DarkFic/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5914673/1/Hate Hate]]'' is an example of taking something that was already sad (Elysia's father's death in ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'') and making it absolutely horrifying. She [[spoiler:blames Sheska for Hughes's death and turns to Envy for comfort, ending up as his lover. Elysia then tortures and rapes Sheska, causing a miscarriage, and tries (though ultimately fails) to kill her.]]
* ''[[http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/66460.html The]]'' ''[[http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/66269.html Cripple]]'' ''[[http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/66615.html Arc]]'' a pre-''Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheConquerorOfShamballa'' fic where Edward is completely dependent on Hohenheim due to having no friends, no money, no alchemy, inferior prosthetics and nowhere to turn to. At first, Edward starts to accept Hohenheim as his father, only to turn out that Hohenheim isn't supporting him for free, [[HourglassPlot doesn't want a ''fatherly'' relationship,]] [[ParentalIncest and wants Edward]] [[SexForServices to pay him back.]] [[AbusiveParents And he makes sure that Edward continues to have nowhere else to turn.]]
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''
** Possibly the ultimate example of a well-done Dark Fic is ''[[http://web.archive.org/web/20071202084045/www.allaboutranma.com/fanfics/Bitter_End/bitterend.html The Bitter End]]''. It [[{{Deconstruction}} deconstructs]] the {{fanon}} " psychobitch" Akane into a real person with a real mental disorder, and then follows this premise all the way to its dark, bloody and horrifying conclusion.
** ''[[http://www.thekeep.org/~mike/imbs.html Ill Met By Starlight]]'' is the other great ''Ranma'' Dark Fic.
** Another popular Dark Fic is ''Can't Let Go''. It's about how both Ukyo and Mousse decide to deal with the ones they're infatuated with.
* Take any story where females [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale regularly beat up the male leads,]] such as ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf, LightNovel/TheFamiliarOfZero, Manga/{{Naruto}}'', or ''Manga/LoveHina'', and you'll have quite a few fics written about how the male lead is ''not'' shrugging off a casual MegatonPunch thrown his way, but is sent to the hospital or even fights back or the Tsundere going around killing men and ends up being Killed herself.
* ''Manga/KOn''
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6377396/1/Spiral Spiral]]'' features a lot of dark themes.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon''
** The series had a bit of a dark turn in its final season, where a renegade magical girl tries to destroy the world and nearly succeeds. ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4743777/1/The_Golden_Queen_of_Shadow_Galactica The Golden Queen of Shadow Galactica]]'' tells her side of the story, taking cues from the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] but featuring a dream sequence from the [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]], and has what would definitely be considered a bad ending.
** Deconstructed in ''[[http://www.lethesbanks.com/BestFanfiction/in_dktws.txt The Dark, Twisted, Grotesque, Violent and Generally Perverse Adventures of the Sailor Scouts!]]''. Written under the conceit of the main characters reading through various fanfic "scripts", it manages to touch on every facet of ''Sailor Moon'' darkfic ever to exist.
** ''Deaths of the Senshi'' is quite good once you get past the squick. [[spoiler:And they get better in end, so don't be too afraid.]]
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/922343/1/Usagi_is_Dead_Usagi_is_Dead_Hip_Hip_Hip_Hooray Usagi Is Dead Hip Hip Hooray]]''. The title only gives you the very barest inkling: it ''starts'' with an unspeakably horrifying tragedy that subverts the entire original show, and only gets worse from there.
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5926174/1/The_Last_Light The last Light]]'' is a short crossover in which the whole concept of the Sailor Crystals is given the ''Series/DoctorWho'' treatment. Equal parts Tearjerker and Nightmare Fuel.
** ''[[http://beaulieu.free.fr/smoon/fanfic/damaged.txt Damaged]]'' was a long-ago well-regarded darkfic in which one of the senshi is lost, presumed dead, in a battle with the Dark Kingdom. Lacking any explanation for what happened to her, officials turn their attention to the remaining girls, and their lives fall apart in different ways. But it's the ending that packs the real punch...
** A highly popular yet unfinished Dark Fic is ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/117422/1/A_bDangerous_b_bPairing_b A Dangerous Pairing]]''. The story features an evil version of both Usagi and Mamoru.
* There are quite a few ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' fanfictions which explore the whole [[ChildSoldiers children-as-warriors]] idea, as well as killing for money and the short life expectancy of ninjas. The only reason the setting of ''Naruto'' isn't already dark is purely because it chooses not to focus on such things, being a {{shonen}} series:
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9068922/1/Atonement Atonement]]'' is a chilling description of a scenario in which a curious doctor delves into the case of a permanent psych-ward patient and regrets it. [[spoiler:Naruto ends up in the psych ward by undergoing serious torture, losing one of his hands, going blind, having his chakra pathways destroyed due to forced extraction of Kyuubi, and ends up developing a split personality to cope: he ends up thinking he's Sasuke.]]
** Website/FanFictionDotNet abounds with fanfiction describing Naruto's all-out, lifelong struggle to utterly decimate the Leaf Village because people hated him (he recognizes [[http://www.narutobase.net/manga/Naruto/485/13 this]] ''[[http://www.narutobase.net/manga/Naruto/485/14 possibility]]'' himself). These are usually chock full of tales of him being beaten, burned, stabbed, mugged, occasionally raped (if the author is going for some real shock value), harassed, having his house destroyed, and generally just doing everything possible to make him [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds kill everything forever]].
** In dark fics featuring Hinata as the main character, you can bet Hiashi is going to be subject to {{Flanderization}} as a JerkAss, TheAntiChrist, [[KickTheDog kicker ]] and [[ShootTheDog shooter of dogs]], ManipulativeBastard, SmugSnake, all-around not nice guy and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking not paying attention to traffic lights]]. All this despite the fact that in canon, he isn't really such a bad guy, just proud and strict. He's revealed to be quite a sympathetic character quite early on, as well. The same goes for her sister Hanabi, mixed with BitchInSheepsClothing, due to her vague nature. However the manga suggests that she really is just a normal kid, and a nice sister at that, and the anime follows that through.
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4645982/1/ Ten Thousand Fists]]'' involves him getting an [[WesternAnimation/{{Ben10}} Omnitrix]] filled with anime characters in place of aliens. And you know its a Dark Fic when Chapter 1 has Iruka tortured, mutilated, and killed with the same happening to Naruto, who only lives due to a DeusExMachina. Then we find out he suffers the usual gamut of beatings, burnings, dog maulings, rapes, etc. And somehow it manages to get '''worse''' [[spoiler:once Kakashi shows up]].
** ''Fanfic/{{Team 8}}'' is one of the most popular ''Naruto'' fanfic and has its fair share of darkness. Almost [[BigScrewedUpFamily every Hyuuga]] [[RonTheDeathEater is a complete jerk]] (especially towards Hinata). Kurenai has a DarkAndTroubledPast, and Naruto suffered near-systematic abuse prior to becoming a ninja that goes way beyond what the manga implies.
%%** ''Naruto Veangance Revelaitons'', was said [[WordOfGod by the author]] to be an attempt at a dark fic, and there is no shortage of terrible happenings in there, including mass murder, rape (by "[[DesignatedHero heroes]]" and villains alike), and [[spoiler:the end of the world]].
* ''Manga/LuckyStar'':
** The doujinshi ''Webcomic/{{Lonely Kagamin}}''. The TrueCompanions have split up, they've all gone to college, and Kagami is stuck in a depressing rut in which she no longer socializes with anyone, and is apparently in a class with [[VisualNovel/{{Clannad}} Nagisa Furukawa and Tomoyo Sakagami]] (that and [[CloudCuckoolander Tsukasa]] has become a {{Main/Jerkass}} who can't keep a boyfriend and apparently has always hated Kagami). Until Konata walks back into her life... only now Kona-chan is a suicidally depressed loner who [[SelfHarm cuts herself.]] They fall in love and sleep together... and then Kagami wakes up and realizes it was AllJustADream and [[DownerEnding goes back to her painfully stagnant life]]. (Which, itself, was AllJustADream, and Kagami wakes up to find Konata next to her. Apparently, the DownerEnding was an AprilFools joke meant to depress the reader; a follow-up that is more fluffy than resolving .)
** Lonely Kagamin? How about Bulimic Prostitute Kagamin?. That's what you'll find in ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4997283/1/Lucky_Star_Blues Lucky Star Blues]]''.
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4511680/1/Tsukasa_is_Pregnant_and_Other_Such_Stories Tsukasa is Pregnant and Other Such Stories]]''. It takes a special kind of dementia to unleash the SugarApocalypse on ''Anime/LuckyStar''. Chapter 5 especially shows the disturbing aftermath of BreakTheCutie on [[spoiler:Tsukasa]].
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8561233/1/The-Loss-of-Innocence The Loss of Innocence]]''. As if the aftermath of BreakTheCutie in the entry above was disturbing...
** ''FanFic/FallingStars'', a FusionFic with the ''Manga/LuckyStar'' characters replacing the cast of ''VideoGame/{{Fallout 3}}'' and casting Konata as The Lone Wanderer as she and her friends deal with the dangers of the [[AfterTheEnd Capitol Wasteland]].
** ''FanFic/StarsAbove'', a crossover with ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' of all things.
** ''FanFic/TheDayEverythingChanged'' has Kagami getting brutally beaten by a sadistic, even realistic bully wielding a pocket knife and a metal pipe. She probably would have killed her, too, [[BigDamnHeroes if Konata hadn't intervened]]. The story ends on a light note, though, with Konata and Kagami undergoing a RelationshipUpgrade. The sequel, ''FanFic/HolidayVacation'', is ''much'' lighter in tone, focusing on Konata and Kagami's relationship over Christmas break, as well as Tsukasa and Miyuki, as well as Yutaka and Minami, becoming couples, and the second sequel, ''FanFic/LuckyStarAfterStory'' has all three couples getting married, plus focus on a group of [=OCs=].
* The [[spoiler:Dark Blues]] arc of ''Anime/MegaManNTWarrior'' spawned about a million of these. Many of them [[YaoiGuys shipping]].
* ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'' is a manga series about [[MoeAnthropomorphism personified countries]]. It goes without saying that darker stories--especially involving [[PsychopathicManchild Russia]] or any colonial power, past or present--based on actual historical events are not uncommon.
** A rather popular subject among these is the UsefulNotes/ColdWar. While Russia is almost always shown as the PsychopathicManchild he is, the portrayal of America [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation varies]].
** Fanfiction regarding UsefulNotes/NaziGermany writes itself.
** Another popular subject is the conflict between North and South Korea. North Korea is usually portrayed as a [[BrokenBird hardened woman]] [[LadyOfWar soldier]] whose goal is to force her brother South Korea to accept communism--whether he likes it or not. The conflict usually is portrayed as bloody and [[TearJerker tear-jerking]], and both Russia and America have no qualms about taking advantage of it.
** Many fics involving colonialism, especially in regards to the British Empire, plunge straight in to darkfic territory in a brutal analysis of the implications of colonialism for the personified countries - anything regarding the Opium Wars is practically guaranteed to be this trope.
** There are also quite a few darkfics based around the end of Prussia or the Berlin Wall, which usually involve him being kidnapped and tortured/raped by Russia for a few decades. Any fic about Russia and the Soviet countries is practically guaranteed to have him do horrible things to them, esspecially [[TheWoobie Lithuania]], Latvia, or the aformentioned Prussia.
** In the case of works like ''Fanfic/NineteenEightyThreeDoomsdayStories'', this can also be subverted. Nations die and suffer from the aftermath of [[AfterTheEnd Doomsday]]. But further down the line, things ''do'' [[AWorldHalfFull get better for at least some of them]].
* ''Fanfic/{{The Road You Choose}}'' is a collection of works based off of the Pokemon anime, with a few key differences. Aging, Misty, and Aura.
* ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'':
** One particularly disturbing example is the FusionFic doujinshi ''Manga/DriftingClassroom'', a horror tale void of any of the series' humor, optimism or light-heartedness. It involves the school, with everyone inside, being sent to a barren world. They split into factions over whether they should attempt to find a way home or try to start a life in the new world. [[spoiler:People start dying, [[NightmareFuelStationAttendant Osaka]] finds a gun in a paper bag and begins killing the other girls, Chiyo winds up getting the gun but Osaka stabs her in the throat. Then Chiyo sees Chiyo-Daddy after she dies, who is actually God or something, then wakes up to find it's AllJustADream and everything's fine.]]
** There is a {{Hentai}} doujinshi (links will not be provided - BrainBleach is expensive) which revisited Osaka theorizing about what would happen if Chiyo got kidnapped. It's a {{Hentai}}. Do the math.
** ''[[http://www.shoujoai.com/fanfics/?series=azumanga&fanfic=ontheroad&parte=1 I'll Be On The Road Again]]'', in which Kaorin realises that she can never have Sakaki, and ends up killing herself by driving her car into a wall. Short and eerily In Character.
** ''[[http://florestica.com/dbsommer/azumanga/ar/index.htm Azumanga Royale]]'', which is a crossover with, well, ''Literature/BattleRoyale''. And it's ''hilarious'', thus proving that you ''can'' make a series DarkerAndEdgier and still keep it funny.
-->'''Yomi''': ''Tomo-chan, my best buddy in the whole world, wait for me so we can 'team up'! I'll introduce you to my new friend, Mr. Spiky Bat! He's been wanting to meet you for a real long time. I think you're going to become real close!''
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6637295/1/Differing_Paths Differing Paths]]'', in the genre of "Tomo-as-badass-cop" fics. Not entirely serious, but contains severe, near chapter-to-chapter MoodWhiplash. This is the kind of thing that goes straight from a hilariously meta ''Manga/LuckyStar'' crossover, to Tomo [[{{Fingore}} torturing]] Kaorin.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2063982/1/Control Control]]'' is a Yukari/Minamo fic where, to start things off, Yukari has a secret drug problem. It only gets grimmer from there.
* ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha'':
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4380342/1 The Name of War]]''. There's no external enemy, just the [=TSAB=], and the divisions in squads and families are heart-breaking.
** Anything by [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/246069/Extrinsical Extrinsical]] is not for the faint of heart.
** Also, ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3780371/1/Scars_of_Time Scars of Time]]'' and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4003923/1/Distant_Sky Distant Sky]]''. (The latter contains ''VisualNovel/{{Planetarian}}'' '''spoilers!''')
** ''Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha [=BetrayerS=]'' is something of a household name for ''Nanoha'' darkfic, not so much because of blood, gore, and murder, but because of how thoroughly and gleefully it subverts the original's enlightened ideals of ThePowerOfFriendship, honest communication, and family bonds. The author instead turns the story into a ''Literature/GameOfThrones''-level political clusterfuck, where Hayate masterminds armed coups, Nanoha has to fight Fate (again) and Subaru for reasons she is not allowed to explain to them and vomits blood every morning from overexertion, and a 9-year-old Vivio has to fight both of her mothers in a bid for galactic dictatorship.
* The two 'Karakura Cops' stories. It places the ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' characters in a police force setting and the Espada are a terrorist group who brutally murder almost the entire cast. Apart from containing cannibalism, suicide and child murder, it actually starts off as a light-hearted comedy.
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' fandom might be collectively the crowning champion of this trope. The series was the poster boy for darkness to begin with, but amongst fans known for [[EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory analysing everything down to the smallest detail]] the ability to tease out the smallest aspect and expand upon every twisted meaning or interpretation is phenomenal. A far from comprehensive list:
** [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/64284/Random1377 Random1377]] is another prolific ''NGE'' darkfic author, with entries such as ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1259313/1/The_Lifespan_of_a_Love_Affair The Lifespan of a Love Affair]]'' (a deconstruction of the [[MayDecemberRomance Misato/Shinji pairing]]), ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1747319/1/Let_She_Who_is_Without_Sin Let She Who is Without Sin]]'' (about a SerialKiller), and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/483402/1/Aoi Aoi]]'' (includes Shinji being killed in the first chapter, and falls apart from there).
** ''FanFic/ScarTissue'' is also a good one: Asuka blames her scars and death in canon on Shinji and punishes him by subjecting him to constant emotional, physical and sexual torture, and Shinji takes it all because he thinks he deserves it after defiling her and leaving her die right before ending humanity. Meanwhile Shinji's low self-esteem and self-hatred has become a split personality tortures him in the form of hallucinations. And that's only the backstory; the fic itself begins after [[spoiler:Asuka beating him so brutally that he has to be taken to the hospital and she finally realizes her actions have been horrible.]] On the other hand, the fic inverts the usual darkfic formula in that it [[MustMakeAmends starts off dark and gets progressively lighter]].
* ''Manga/SoulEater'' has been getting a few, too. For example, ''A Souls Songbook'' is a AlternateUniverseFic where the battle between Shinigami-sama & Asura eight centuries ago [[ForWantOfANail went the other way]], resulting in a CrapsackWorld run by the witches, the Kishin [[ReligionOfEvil is worshiped by the mainstream religion]], and the {{Shapeshifter Weapon}}s [[WhatMeasureIsAHumanoid are considered things.]]
* Shadow Cell's ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny'' [[http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/shadowcell/ retelling,]] it brings much of the Zeta out of Destiny's retelling.
* ''FanFic/TheCriesOfHaruhiSuzumiya'' is a ''LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya'' darkfic by way of crossing it over with ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'', and manages to be ''darker than both of the source materials''. It contains {{fingore}}, child murder, [[YourHeadAsplode heads exploding]], [[spoiler: maggots bleeding out of a girl's privates, and just what would happen if two of the most powerful characters in fiction went insane.]]
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6487049/1/The_Rise_and_Fall_of_Captain_Garlock The Rise and Fall of Captain Starlock]]'' is this for ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'', with Simon crossing the DespairEventHorizon and vowing revenge against the beastman. It ''still'' didn't become full darkfic, but, [[ForegoneConclusion you got the picture]].
* ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02''
** ''[[Fanfic/Digimon02TheStoryWeNeverTold The Story We Never Told]]'' is a darker retelling; the violence level is ramped up, there's distrust between the two generations of Digidestined, and there's a anti-Emperor [[LaResistance resistance]] that quickly becomes [[FantasticRacism vehemently anti-human in general]], and quickly turns most of the Digital World against the kids.
* ''Manga/DeathNote'' isn't exactly a cheerful story to begin with, but ''Fanfic/TheFaceless'' explores the FridgeHorror of having a realm of Death Gods feeding off human lifespans '''''all the time''''' and what happens [[BrokenMasquerade when humans learn this]]. They begin killing each other because of it, resulting in a [[AfterTheEnd Post Apocalyptic]] [[NietzscheWannabe World of Nihilism]].
* ''Negimaru'', a Dark Fic for ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'' made by the same people who made ''Drifting Classroom'' above and ''[[Manga/ReTake Evangelion RE-TAKE]]''. It's about Chisame’s alter ego Idol character getting beaten by her fellow classmates in Internet popularity polls so she schemes of a plan to destroy their reputations online by using her *ahem* cosplay skills. [[spoiler:Her plans succeed a little too well, and... let’s just say she gets too involved in her plan...]]
* Also made by Studio Kimigabuchi is a ''Manga/SgtFrog'' doujin titled ''Hikari No Kuni''. Which shows a dark version of an alien invasion from Keron.
* ''Fanfic/MarieDSuesseAndTheMysteryNewPirateAge!'' deliberately invokes as many ''Manga/OnePiece'' fanfiction cliches as possible, then breaks down and explores what would happen in those cases if [[RealityEnsues reality ensued]]. The results are often both hilarious and horrific.
* ''FanFic/{{Respect}}'' is a WhatIf ''Anime/SmilePrettyCure'' story that examines what would happen if timid crybaby Yayoi Kise made a contract with [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica Kyubey]] in order to stop a [[TheBully bully]] from tormenting her. Needless to say, things go downhill quickly.
* ''Webcomic/NanasEverydayLife'' delves into themes darker than ''Manga/ElfenLied'', and that's saying something!
* ''[[http://azeira.deviantart.com/art/A-Madman-s-Circus-Part-1-314368512 A Madman's Circus]]'' is a ''Manga/DeathNote'' FusionFic with [[Music/{{Vocaloid}} Vocoloid's Dark Woods Circus]] where [[LightNovel/AnotherNote Beyond Birthday]] runs a CircusOfFear. [[spoiler: [[JerkassWoobie Poor, poor Light Yagami]]...]]
* Based off ''Manga/ToLoveRu'', "[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10223400/1/To-Love-DEATH To-Love-DEATH]]" is all this. Taking a silly romantic comedy like ''To-Love-Ru'', allow the characters warm your heart, then get destroyed with zombies!
* The ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' fanfic ''FanFic/PersephonesWaltz'' manages to be even ''bleaker'' than its notoriously depressing source material, with an incredibly detailed exploration into someone's [[SanitySlippage slowly collapsing sanity]] and the horrible things that people can be driven to in desperate situations. About halfway through Sayaka [[spoiler:brutally ''stabs Homura to death'' (it doesn't stick)]] and it isn't even the most horrifying thing that happens.
* ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'' fans are very prone to this. Many up the violence from the anime.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10632027/1/Pathways Pathways]]''. Just the cover art alone, with a bloody Pikachu looking especially nightmare-fuelish is enough to warn that this fic is quite dark.
** ''Fanfic/TheDarkSideOfInnocence'' is a James/Jessie fic where James is given a [[PsychoSerum drug that makes him more violent]] by Giovanni. It features several graphic deaths, such as [[spoiler:Giovanni being eaten by his drugged Persian]].
* With ''Anime/KillLaKill'' being a rather controversial show, this can be a given, however, some of said fics are often more graphic than the anime is:
** ''If I've Been Enveloped in Tenderness'' is a rather grim and ''explicit'' fic. To elaborate, Ragyo won and there is a very high body count with Mako's parents, Nudist Beach, and two of the Elite Four being executed. The fic can be found on Archive of Our Own, where it is rated thusly.
** ''Fanfic/MaimDeMaim'' isn't as dark but it does have it's moments. A key point would be what Ragyo did to Mr. Tapatio or Nui's backstory, rather, ''what'' she did in said backstory.
** Like the abovementioned, ''FanFic/AMinorMiscalculation'',have more detailed deaths than in the original anime, the first chapter opening to Mako and Mataro losing their parents to Nui in very ''graphic'' fashion.
** ''Fanfic/TheCrimsonGarment'' and most of what can be said is that Satsuki has a lot psychological issues and the fic is a dystopian fantasy where most parents only see their kids as a means to an end (Mako's parents don't), death rates are high, life is determined by your grades (''80%'' fail the test), and the world is a rather depressing combination of a CrapsackWorld and WretchedHive. Essentially, it's like ''Anime/KillLaKill'' meets ''Anime/AkameGaKill'' and ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', with some bit ''Anime/ElfenLied'' in a ''[[Literature/TheHungerGames Hunger Games]]'' like setting.
** ''[[https://fanfiction.net/s/10230396/1/At-the-End-of-Days At the End of Days]]'' (extended version can be read here: [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/4753601/chapters/10867715]]) is a fic that takes place sometime after Ep. 18 and, well, [[spoiler: getting rid of Ragyou]] didn't kill them off she like said, instead, they've gone haywire, bring the end of the world. It's a also a DeathFic, as most of everyone that Satsuki and Ryuuko knew are dead, included [[spoiler: Mako, Iori, and three of the Elite Four]].
* ''Anime/OsomatsuSan'':
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/6926230/chapters/15799885 I With A Reputation For Follow-Up Suicide]]'' is a {{novelization}} of a [=MAD=] of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlmRNU9eAO4 the same name]]. All ''six'' of the brothers are DrivenToSuicide, one by one.
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/5698546/chapters/13127149 Death In The Family]]'' has Ichimatsu [[SiblingMurder killing]] Karamatsu.
** Ichimatsu participating in SelfHarm and/or contemplating suicide is a surprisingly common fandom plot. [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11759064/1/Are-You-Okay Here]] is a particularly heartbreaking example, and [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11865004/1/ESP-Kitty-s-Return another]] by the same author.
** One particularly famous Pixiv comic had Iyami and Chibita solve a murder mystery where the sextuplets were hacked to pieces, only to find out [[spoiler: Osomatsu did it, then hid the fact that he wasn't among them by rearranging the body parts so each body looked like someone lost a part when hiding their corpses.]]
** After learning that ''Manga/OsomatsuKun'' had a chapter where a robber dragged Osomatsu into being his partner in crime, fans started writing and drawing plenty of fic where the memory still haunts Osomatsu in his adult years. Either the robber returns and pulls him back into that life, or it turns into AlternateUniverse fic where he kidnapped Osomatsu and subjected him to a lot of physical and mental (and occasionally sexual) abuse when they ran away together.

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/YoungAvengers'': Being a RealityWarper whose powers can manifest subconsciously, it's easy to write Wiccan in the most [[FridgeHorror creepy light imaginable]] without making him OOC. [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/189471 This fanfic]] takes the cake.
* ''ComicBook/JohnnyTheHomicidalManiac'' is [[VillainProtagonist pretty]] [[CrapsackWorld dark]] on its own, to the point that even its LighterAndSofter derivatives would be considered pretty twisted in a majority of the other fandoms. The darker stuff can still outdo the original if done right, with such shining examples as the ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3558377/1/Little_Red_Letter Little Red Letter]]'' trilogy (which among [[MindScrew other things]] kills any [[ForegoneConclusion hope]] for the fan-beloved {{child|renAreInnocent}} Comicbook/{{Squee}}) and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6356806/1/Beyond-the-Wall Beyond the Mirror]]'' (enjoy the [[YouCantFightFate fatalism]] and [[LossOfIdentity horror]] of the {{world|HalfEmpty}}).
* ComicBook/DisneyDucksComicUniverse got on dark story titled ''Webcomic/TheAdventuresOfGyro'' which involve the friendly inventor Gyro Gearloose going disturbingly insane and doing some truly despicable things to other characters (from kidnapping and starving their children to burning down their home) with complete lack of motivtion and while having a deadpan expresion on his face which makes the entire thing extra eerie (even if some parts are clearly played for [[BlackComedy laughs]]). [[http://panmilus.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-adventures-of-gyro.html DarkFic indeed...]]
* ''FanFic/{{Eugenesis}}'' is an incredibly dark continuation of ComicBook/TheTransformers, one that plays the horror of war utterly straight, and subverts or even outright averts some of the usual tropes of Transformers fiction. Characters, even important or beloved ones, can die horrible and sudden deaths. And that's before we even get to [[BodyHorror what the villains of the piece do]].
* ''ComicBook/SonicTheComic'':
** Fan-artists like coating Super Sonic in blood and upping the violence of the series.
** ''Webcomic/SonicTheComicOnline'' is a fan-continuation of the original comic. It has delved into DarkerAndEdgier and BloodierAndGorier aspects, most infamously [[spoiler:Tekno suffering SanitySlippage and attempting to kill a villain]].

* The ''Franchise/{{Batman}}''[=/=]''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug'' crossover, ''Fanfic/MiraculousKnight'', tonally hews closer to stuff like the ''WesternAnimation/DCUniverseOriginalAnimatedMovies'', the ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamSeries'', the ''Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy'', the ''Film/DCExtendedUniverse'', and the ''Ladybug'' promotional video than ''Miraculous'' proper or, say, the ''Franchise/DCAnimatedUniverse'' as people are seriously hurt or even killed over the course of it and doesn't avoid WouldHurtAChild.

[[folder:Film - Animated]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime'' : Rhombus's ''Fanfic/TheSevenHunters'' has the premise "What would happen if Littlefoot and his friends were suddenly turned into carnivores?" and it plays the premise to its logical, horrifying conclusions.
* ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'' fans are incredibly prone to this. It could be argued that dark fics even outnumber the happy fics. Anything from angsty fics dealing with topics like incest or Elsa's powers, to [[DrivenToSuicide suicide fics]], to fics dealing with politics and the consequences of an EndlessWinter, and fics that make Elsa a murderous villain (or anti-villain) are commonplace.
* Considering how cruel nature is and how dark the films are, it's unsurprising that ''Disney/TheLionKing'' has a lot of these (especially fanart). A popular [[FandomSpecificPlot concept]] revolves around Zira murdering Simba's and Nala's first cub, Kopa (a semi-official character from books that predate the sequel film), and that being why she was exiled.
* ''Disney/{{Tangled}}'':
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/1123577 Fractals & Flames]]'' revolves around something that appears in quite a few ''Tangled'', and less so ''Frozen'', works: What if Rapunzel's or Elsa's powers made them [[TheAgeless immortal]]?
** In ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/4326594 Unraveled]]'' Rapunzel is immortal and has trouble [[WhoWantsToLiveForever dealing with it]].
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10034019/1/Prisoner-of-Time Prisoner Of Time]]'' and ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9638917/1/Time-Passes Time Passes]]'' both feature an immortal Rapunzel and her dealing with her troubles as she goes through the centuries. [[spoiler:In both she dies when the sun finally goes out]].
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/503575 Flynn Rider And The Feral Princess]]'' has Gothel's abusive qualities ramped up significantly. Rapunzel is [[WildChild feral]], [[OlderThanTheyLook severely stunted]] in terms of growth, and suffered horrible abuse.
** Fanfics like ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8859473/1/Missing-Mother Missing Mother]]'', ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8111263/1/Mourning-Mother Mourning Mother]]'', and ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6694533/1/Nostalgia Nostalgia]]'' deal with Rapunzel averting AngstWhatAngst and having trouble adjusting to the reveal that Gothel kidnapped her and was using her for her powers.
* ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/4255110 Three Wishes]]'' is a ''Disney/{{Aladdin}}'' fic where Jasmine brutally tortures Jafar. It also has him [[RapeAsDrama sexually abusing her]] in the past.
* Both ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10658046/1/Dreams Dreams]]'' and ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/1595678 Destiny]]'' have several Franchise/DisneyAnimatedCanon films as really being AllJustADream set either while a main character (usually the main female) is dying or while they are going through their miserable lives.
* ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/373563 Consumed]]'' is a ''Disney/{{Cinderella}}'' fanfic where Cinderella gets revenge on her step-family. Cue Cinderella getting Anastasia assassinated, having her body fed to her mother and sister (off-screen), and getting both of them put into jail for assumed murder and cannibalism. [[spoiler:Drizella opts to [[{{Better to Die Than Be Killed}} kill herself instead of being hanged]]]].
* ''Fanfic/LostTalesOfFantasia'', now with its own page, combines every Franchise/{{Disney|AnimatedCanon}} story (every single one) into a single world, while answering some FridgeLogic questions with FridgeHorror. Why are Disney/PeterPan's ears pointy? [[spoiler:Tinker Bell was his mother. She almost died in childbirth due to the size difference]]. Why is Captain Hook such a bumbling figure compared to the original works? [[spoiler:He's holding back a little because Peter's his son. He only wants to kill Tinker Bell, and only because he's slowly been driven mad by the forces of Hell. By the way, Hell is [[Disney/AliceInWonderland Wonderland]], and the Queen of Hearts is an EldritchAbomination]]. Oh, and the story takes place during World War Two. So Hitler has a VillainSong.
* Jeftoon01 has drawn a series called [[http://jeftoon01.deviantart.com/gallery/11344500 Twisted Princess]] wherein various [[Franchise/DisneyPrincess Disney Princesses]] are portrayed in macabre styles, ranging from creepy to plain horrific. Each drawing has an accompanying short story that details how the princesses came to share such dark fates. He is also working on a similiar set, Twisted Fairies, with descriptions connecting fates of each disney Fairy to a larger MythArc. [[http://jeftoon01.deviantart.com/gallery/26266974 Here y'go]].
* Some morbid ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut'' fans seem to be keen on the idea of Riley dying. This is a plot point in the stories ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11415751/1/The-Death-of-Riley The Death of Riley]]'', ''[[Goodbye, Riley https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11599094/1/Goodbye-Riley]]'' ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11349155/1/Until-the-End Until the End]]'' (added angst because it's due to a sickness), and ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11335768/1/Going-Dark Going Dark]]''.

[[folder:Film - Live Action]]
* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}''
*** Margo_Kim's [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/541006 "The Value of Strength"]] has the premise "what if [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica Steve Rogers]] is secretly a complete sociopath?" and ruthlessly reinterprets the events of the film and its [[Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger predecessor]] and predicts the future actions of the character based on that.
*** In ''[[http://avengerkink.livejournal.com/6021.html?thread=9006213#t9006213 Steve He Saved for Last]]'', Tony flips a coin every New Year's Eve to decide whether to spend the year good or evil. This fic is what happens when he flips evil.
*** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/591731 Draining the Oasis Dry]]'' features a Bruce Banner and Tony Stark who are secretly evil, and, as a couple, are sexually aroused by murdering people in situations where they've ostensibly attempted to SAVE them.
** ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''
*** There was nothing light about the Winter Soldier's capture, brainwashing, and abuse depicted in the film. However, ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/1815529/chapters/3897427 Chyetirye]]'', the first part of the FanFic/{{Ipseity}} series, focuses not only on torture, but also on sexual abuse inflicted onto him and the resulting [[SplitPersonality Dissociative Identity Disorder]].

* ''Literature/WheresWally'':
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9183160/1/Searching Searching]] is a one-shot describing a darkly different interpretation of the Where's Waldo scenes that makes entirely too much sense.
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11025163/1/What-Is-Lost What Is Lost]] is a story about an OC named Gabby who has never able to find Waldo due to being red/green colorblind, and when she finally admitted her condition to her class, she was constantly ridiculed. Suffering from anxiety and self-harm because of this, she blames Waldo for it all. When her only friend gives her a magic ''WW'' book, they enter it to find Waldo and presumably do something nasty to him. Sadly, [[DeadFic it ends there]], but the fact that somebody had the idea at all is mind-boggling.
* ''Literature/TheLordOfTheRings'' fandom has plenty of these, many involving Elves and HoYay. However, one fan fic stands out as being extremely disturbing: ''And These Pearls That Were Her Eyes''. A story based on ''Literature/TheSilmarillion'' segment about the last king and queen of Númenor, it's a dark tragedy about spousal violence and rape. (Not that ''The Silmarillion'' isn't pretty dark to begin with.)
* ''Literature/GoodOmens''
** If you ever wonder why the obvious plot bunny of "what if Aziraphale was the demon and Crowley the angel?" hardly ever pops up, read ''Fanfic/TheSacredAndTheProfane''. It proves that the only way to pull this off without completely abandoning canon characterization is to [[{{Deconstruction}} deconstruct]] the traits that would otherwise be out of place when on the other side. Aziraphale's affability becomes the [[StepfordSmiler facade]] Zirah assumes to convince others ([[WhatHaveIBecome and himself]]) that he's really an angelic soul when he's not [[DissonantSerenity casually offing]] [[AxCrazy people]], and Crowley's [[HoYay tendency to]] [[NobleDemon be not so evil]] around Aziraphale is translated into Caphriel's [[LoveMartyr inability to let go of his love for]], and what passes for a relationship with, Zirah. Armageddon ''is'' still being averted seems to take most of the edge off... and then an exception to the canon-established EverybodyLives outcome occurs: [[spoiler:Caphriel ''kills'' Zirah to get over his unhealthy love for him, so neither of them gets a happy ending.]] And all because an angel [[ForWantOfANail had the wrong thought in the wrong place.]]
** A good number of fics about a Second Apocalypse that the characters [[YouCantFightFate have no hope of averting]], Crowley and/or Aziraphale being punished for averting Armageddon or their [[SlashFic love]], or Crowley revealing that his NobleDemon personality was an act all along and making Aziraphale suffer for his misguided trust/love. Some of them are competently written, while others plunge straight into DeusAngstMachina territory.
* ''Literature/PercyJacksonAndTheOlympians'' and ''Literature/TheHeroesOfOlympus'' have developed a niche fanbase filled with these, mostly due to [[CreepyAwesome dark!Percy]] and his OneSceneWonder fight with Akhlys. Some, like [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/6366367 this one]] attempt to resolve his inner turmoil, while some, like [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/3538292/chapters/7786868 this one]], simply enjoy and explore the theme.
* Due to its nature, ''Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'' is rich with possibilities. The Phantom is a StalkerWithACrush, who has been watching a little girl for years as she grows up (hidden behind her mirror, no less), who has a history of assassination and dark magic (among other things), and whom most of the fans ''still'' want to see get the girl. Ironically, this goes back to the original interpretation of the character, prior to [[AudienceColoringAdaptation the musical version]], which made the Phantom LighterAndFluffier.
* Many, '''many''' ''Literature/HarryPotter'' fanfics. Before book 7, most were of "What if Voldemort wins" variety ([[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1090830/1/Amicus-Draconis-1st-Cycle-Cycle-of-the-Badger Cycle of the Badger]], for example). After that, they mostly flesh out the what was happening with the rest of the wizarding world during the book. Also the First War is quite popular.
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2963321/1/Oedipus_Flower Oedipus' Flower]]'', where Harry's parents survived and Voldemort wasn't around, so Harry himself was the villain. By the end of it, Harry had killed his own brother and almost killed his father, plus raping his mother and sister.
** ''Hogwarts Exposed'' is something of a Dark Fic, full as it is of rape, pedophilia, torture and bodily functions; the author [[FlipFlopOfGod disagreed with himself]] as to the extent to which this was intentional.
** The Padfoot Tragedies series, a "what if" story except the what if in question is "What if Sirius killed himself in his sixth year following years of abuse from his family, pedo!Fenrir Greyback and Hogwarts head girl, and BastardBoyfriend!Remus? And that meant the Voldemort never fell? And then Sirius somehow comes back from the dead 20 or so years later?"
** How do you make a magical world even darker? By crossing it over with ''Franchise/{{Hellraiser}}'' in [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2452681/1/Evil_Be_Thou_My_Good/ "Evil Be Thou My Good"]]. It's actually a bit of a subversion as things end relatively happily... [[spoiler:so long as you are Harry or one of his friends. The Dursleys, Death Eaters, Umbridge... yeah, things don't go well for them.]]
* ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'':
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4516602/1/The_Paper_Doll_Kindergarten The Paper Doll Kindergarten]]''. Remember Nessie (or Renesmee Carlie, if you prefer), Bella's super-quick-growing genius vampire baby? Well, Nessie isn't happy. Sadly, this fic is no longer available for whatever reason.
** "[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8285629/1/What_Dreams_May_Come What Dreams May Come]]", which just applies the "vampire hypnotism" found in so many other works of vampire literature to Twilight, while simultaneously showing Edward in the most creepy possible light. MindRape ensues.
** Nessie inspires a lot of this. There are two companion fics, called "[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4567400/1/Seven Seven]]" and "[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4942443/1/Eighteen Eighteen]]" which deal with two possible interpretations of her strange aging.
** For a look at the horrors of imprinting from the other side, ''FanFic/ForYouIWill'' {[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7586237/1/For-You-I-Will found here]]) is an ''incredibly'' dark work that has Embry imprinting on a vagrant named Melanie Sampson. Everyone promptly accepts it as True Love like in the books... except [[TheSociopath Melanie]] is ''nothing'' like the other "wolf girls", and starts using the [[MoreThanMindControl imprinting bond]] to get away with [[DomesticAbuse abusing]] Embry and getting him to do all sorts of horrific things with her. [[spoiler:By the end of the fic, Melanie is forcing Embry to help her brutally sodomize and murder brown-haired women. [[HopeSpot Jacob and the other werewolves manages to figure this out]], but the story ends with Melanie ordering Embry to secretly kill them all, so they can't interfere.]]
* Creator/NeilGaiman has written a ''Literature/TheChroniclesOfNarnia'' darkfic called "The Problem of Susan" about Susan after her siblings are killed so they can stay in Narnia. It involves [[spoiler:White Witch/Aslan sex]]. He also wrote ''Snow, Glass, Apples'' which makes "Literature/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs" much darker by telling it from the Queen's point of view and making Snow White the villain.
* ''[[http://karaokegal.livejournal.com/913625.html A Shot of the Needful]]'' deals with manipulation, alcoholism and sexual abuse... in the ''Literature/JeevesAndWooster'' fandom. [[spoiler:It doesn't end well.]]
* The ''A dance of Shadow and Light'' series by [[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/3779251/Ocadioan Ocadioan]] takes the ''Literature/InheritanceCycle'' and makes it significantly darker and more brutal. Especially as of ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9998018/1/Phoenix-fire Phoenix Fire]]'', where the body count in the first ten chapters alone reach above 250,000.
* ''Literature/WinnieThePooh'': [[http://www.skrause.org/humor/poohgoesapeshit.shtml Pooh Goes Apeshit]] (extremely not safe for work, lunch, or your sanity).
* ''Literature/TheMysteriousBenedictSociety'':
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9536599/1/It-Wasn-t-Sleep It Wasn't Sleep]]'' is about Katie dying on a mission. Sticky [[BigSleep mistakes her for sleeping]].
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6502542/1/Invincible Invincible]]'' is a graphic Katie death fic.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8283245/1/The-Rain-s-Fault The Rains Fault]]'' has Reynie dying after a fire breaks out while he's visiting a circus.
* ''Literature/{{Worm}}'':
** ''FanFic/{{Cenotaph}}'' both plays this straight... and inverts it. On one hand [[spoiler:Taylor's father is murdered by Bakuda and she almost dies]] on the other, Taylor doesn't spend the first month of her cape career fighting for her life against ''both'' sides of the law.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11359049/1/Stepping-On-Worm Stepping On Worm]]'' by the infamous Perfect Lionheart wants to think it's a FixFic. But the changes made to the background setting end up creating a far darker and more disturbing world than canon - for one, a notorious supervillain is the power behind the US government - and things just get worse from there.

[[folder:Live Action TV]]
* The infamous ''Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers'' fanfiction ''Agony In Pink'', the far-too-long story in which the original Pink Ranger, Kimberly, is kidnapped, raped, tortured and snuffed by Lord Zedd in ''very'' graphic fashion. Some believe it caused an "international incident" (if being mentioned as a reason for filtering a site counts as such) and may have been the reason that Website/FanFictionDotNet stopped allowing NC-17 stories.
** Series/PowerRangers in general seems to lend itself to darker fanfiction, though very few as dark as the above. There's a lot of potential darkness in a teenage strike team fighting aliens with the entire world at stake, and almost none of it gets explored on-screen in the TV-Y7 franchise where the heroes (very nearly) always win.
* ''Series/{{Smallville}}'', being the origin story for TheCape, Franchise/{{Superman}}, was fairly light until [[KnightOfCerebus Bizarro]] showed up, and more so after [[InvincibleVillain Doomsday]] entered the picture in season eight, but Dark Fics in the cheerful early seasons is quite common. ''[[http://two-of-us.svtometropolis.com/viewstory.php?sid=669&ageconsent=ok&warning=4 Crisis]]'', for example, with graphic descriptions of sexual assault, torture, attempted murder and copious amounts of angst.
* ''Series/BattlestarGalactica2003'' has, among others, ''[[http://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/the-long-war-nubsg.250397/ The Long War]]''. Rather than chase after the Galactica and search for Earth, the POV fleet decides to remain at the colonies and keep fighting the cylons. Despite a few victories and poor cylon tactics, they are slowly suffering from attrition and the cylons are starting to learn. The fleet's commander is slowly going insane and the overall outlook looks even bleaker than the television series.
* ''Series/DoctorWho'' is almost custom made for this. Even beyond the Doctor being a [[TheWoobie well-baked angst muffin]] with psychological scars so deep you can fit entire lost civilisations in them, the legions of vicious, dangerous and destructive AliensAndMonsters that have been featured, the sheer potential of a vehicle that can appear anywhere in time and space, and a universe that is [[TheWorldIsAlwaysDoomed Always Doomed]] all combine to contain endless possibilities. Fans have not ignored any of this.
** On a more subtle note, ''[[http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=7981&warning=Adult Psycho Savior, qu'est-ce que c'est?]]'' features a pretty dark take on the Ninth Doctor, who was never exactly a sunshiney kind of guy to begin with. Fortunately, the writer never forgets that the Doctor is, in fact, a [[BigDamnHeroes Big Damn Hero]], which keeps the story firmly on the side of pretty damn good.
* ''FanFic/{{Day of the Barney|Trilogy}}'', which depicts [[Series/BarneyAndFriends Barney the Dinosaur]] as an evil immortal overlord bent on conquering the world (his first and only successful attempt involves inciting every child in the world into a riot against everyone else) with a major case of hypocrisy, not being afraid to murder in graphic manners while maintaining his sickeningly sweet personality. Oh, and his backstory holds him responsible for killing the dinosaurs, corrupting Caligula, unleashing the Black Plague, rescuing UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler and leading ThoseWackyNazis to Anne Frank.
* Remember the ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' episode with many Enterprises and a reality where [[spoiler:"Federation has lost and Borg are everywhere"]]? Well, there is a fanfic about it [[http://mabus101.livejournal.com/109438.html here]].
* Speaking of ''Franchise/StarTrek'', [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/125463/Djinn1 Djinn1]] is particularly good at this trope. See: the Original Series stories ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1228353/1/Dream_Until_Your_Dream_Comes_True Dream Until Your Dream Comes True]]'', ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1673933/1/Banshee Banshee]]'', and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2290262/1/Witness Witness]]''. There are many more; those are just the exceptionally good (and exceptionally dark) ones.
** There are also some ''very'' dark ''Franchise/StarTrek'' fics and fanart depicting the [[AlternateUniverse Mirror Universe]]. One such fic is Naraht's ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/series/4619 How To Advance Your Career Through Marriage]]'' series -- taking the thesis put forward in Diane Duane's ''TNG'' Mirror Universe novel ''Dark Mirror'' that Mirrorverse Picard was [[UriahGambit much less... scrupulous about his attraction to Jack Crusher's wife]]. It focuses on Dr. Crusher's conflict about their undeniably imbalanced, ''profoundly'' unhealthy relationship and its impact on her family and well-being, while navigating a perilous Enterprise where assassination as a means of advance in rank is commonplace. (And it turns standard Picard's fondness for ''Theatre/{{Hamlet}}'' into a bit of a bleak stealth joke.)
** In ''FanFic/AnEnduringSong'', Deanna Troi dies and Riker mourns her.
* The Fanfic/MarissaPicard storys [sic] are light-hearted ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' fanfiction centering on one MarySue character. These fanfic stories have attracted some of ''their own fanfics'', including some that are very dark indeed (such as ''[[http://home.ix.netcom.com/~mblackwl/darkm_1.txt Dark Marrissa #1: The Master Builders]]'' and ''Marrissa Pays Off Karma'').
* Many ''Series/{{Mash}}'' fics focus on Hawkeye Pierce struggling to adjust to life after the war and often end with him being DrivenToSuicide. Arguably justifiable, as he always was a little bipolar and [[spoiler:had a complete psychological breakdown in the series finale that caused him to be committed to a mental hospital.]] Fanfic writer Meredith Bronwen Mallory has some disturbingly well-written darkfics on Website/FanFictionDotNet. Mostly SlashFic, but all haunting and brilliant.
* ''Series/ICarly'' can get some pretty bleak fics:
** They're usually based on Sam's potentially abusive mother, or the potential for a Sam/Freddie relationship to go horrifically off the rails and end up with Sam physically abusing Freddie (often including rape).
** In the [[LesYay Carly/Sam]] fandom, fanfics relating to Sam's behavior pop up, especially self harm (cutting, drugs, alcohol abuse, etc) related ones.
** In [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6544954/1/iNternet-A-Tale-of-Unspeakable-Cruelty-and-Terror one fic]], the gang holds a segment on iCarly where anyone can suggest a website and they'll visit it. Someone links them to various {{shock site}}s. Needless to say, the kids are scarred and it doesn't get any better from there.
* There's a popular type of dark fic called JDA in ''Series/{{Scrubs}}'' fan fiction. In them, JD is often suicidal, abuses drugs, and has cancer in a few of them.
* ''Series/StargateSG1'' has the Eurydice Verse, in which ''the damage doesn't reset itself after every episode''. The author probably thinks the characters should be a ''lot'' more screwed up than they appear to be in {{Canon}}.
* ''Series/HarpersIsland'' has a lot of darkfic based on the BigBad's plan succeeding.
* Believe it or not, Website/FanFictionDotNet's small cache of ''Series/EverybodyLovesRaymond'' fanfic consists ''almost entirely'' of Dark Fic, which is pretty surprising for a sitcom. There are a couple of fics where Debra cheats on Ray with Robert (including one where the result of this action is both Ray and Amy becoming embittered, dark souls who join forces to plot revenge, if I remember correctly), one where Marie has a heart attack and the other characters stand around sneering and laughing at her instead of calling an ambulance, and one that features teenaged versions of Ray and Debra as angst-ridden {{Emo Teen}}s who spend an afternoon cutting themselves.
* ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' has an ''[[http://himym-darkfic.livejournal.com/ entire livejournal community of darkfic]]'' -- an impressive feat for any fandom, let alone a ''sitcom''. Most of them involve various main characters getting into abusive relationships (either with each other or with one-shot or original characters, but most often Barney/Robin), extreme genre shifts changing the setting from comedy to crime/drama or thriller/horror multichapter stories, or subjecting one or more of of the characters' pasts to a CerebusRetcon, again, usually involving abuse. [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1768063/idioticonion idioticonion]] is one of the fandom's most prolific darkfic writers.
* ''FanFic/HuntingTheUnicorn'' is a ''Series/{{Glee}}'' fic that's heavily influenced by ''Literature/TheLastUnicorn''. It {{deconstruct|ionFic}}s Kurt and Blaine's [[TastesLikeDiabetes sugary,]] [[ButNotTooGay chaste]] romance by exposing just what would make them (and ''especially'' Blaine) act like they do in the show. According to readers, the effect is [[TearJerker heartbreaking]].
* Although ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'' is pretty dark to start with, some fanfics manage to make it [[UpToEleven worse]], usually through a lot of torture and rape. One fic springs instantly to mind when [[SoullessShell Evil!Sam]] decides to make Dean his sex slave, mostly through raping the living daylights out of him, all in a world where [[HellOnEarth Hell had taken over]]. And any fic that takes place in the AlternateUniverse shown in [[BadFuture "The End"]], where the Sam and Dean [[TheBadGuyWins fail to stop The Apocalypse]] from happening and Sam agrees to be Lucifer's vessel.
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3779708/1/A-Sweater-Stitched-with-Lies A Sweater Stitched in Lies]]'' is a dark fic of ''Series/TheCosbyShow'' (yes, really) featuring murder, attempted murder, insanity, meth addiction, domestic and child abuse, and lots of sex. Sondra goes insane after Elvin and the twins are murdered in their home (or she murders them, it's not clear), and everything goes downhill from there, with the family falling to pieces while trying to cope.
* ''Series/TheAddamsFamily'':
** In ''FanFic/MorticiaIsPregnant'', Morticia gets depressed twice (suicidal the first time), kidnapped twice, raped once, and severely injured twice. Also, [[spoiler: Gomez, two fetuses and one OC baby of Morticia die.]]
** ''Fanfic/DoYouStillLoveMe'' focuses on Morticia dealing with being raped.
* The ''Series/MorkAndMindy'' fanfic ''[[https://www.wattpad.com/125688574-together-just-not-our-day Together]]'' is practically like a soap opera: first Mindy thinks she has a cold...which turns out to be the flu, Lily (the neighbour) gets [[RupturedAppendix appendicitis]] and Mork gets low blood sugar, then when they get better, Mork and Mindy [[FeudEpisode have a falling-out]], then when they make up, then Lily deals with an abusive boyfriend named Logan, then Mindy feels sad on Mother's Day because [[MissingMom her mother's dead]], then Lily gets lonely and dislikes her job, so she quits it, then they think Mork has to leave...but he doesn't...but he gets [[AmnesiaEpisode amnesia]]...then he goes back to normal but he and Mindy fight again, they make up but Lily gets insecurities...
** Another ''Mork and Mindy'' fanfic that is dark is ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5545639/1/Goodbye Goodbye]]''. Basically, Mork gets severely injured in a car accident, then he dies, and seven years later, Mindy [[spoiler: goes insane and eventually kills herself.]]

* Music/{{Vocaloid}} has some pretty dark fanfics:
** Such as ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7757302/1/From_Concert_to_Chaos From Concert to Chaos]]'' which involves Miku and Rin's {{Evil Counterpart}}s rushing the stage ''during a concert'' and beating the daylights out of them ''in front of over 16,000 fans''.
** If you think that's bad, [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5639070/1/Looking-for-You-in-the-Sky These]] [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8794148/1/Darker-than-Death-Puppy-Mill three]] [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8400019/1/Darker-than-Death-Dust-in-the-Corner stories]]. (Last one mildly NSFW) are ''even worse''.
* ''Music/TheProtomen'' ''is'' a dark fic for ''VideoGame/MegaManClassic''.
* Almost all SlashFic for Music/XJapan is this in some way. For very, ''very'' valid RealLife reasons (namely, two of the original band members are ''dead'' after lives spent struggling with mental illness and alcohol/drug abuse, one of the three surviving original members spent 12 years in a dangerous ScamReligion before getting out, one is a hardcore alcoholic, and one has had a life of physical and emotional illness ''and'' the loss of a parent and a soulmate from self-inflicted deaths). The ''happiest'' any fic that is more than a one-shot PlotWhatPlot story ''can'' plausibly get there is EarnYourHappyEnding - and even some of that, when written involving Taiji before [[AuthorExistenceFailure 2011]], [[RealLifeWritesThePlot became much]] [[GutPunch more sad]].

[[folder:Newspaper Comics]]
* ''ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}}'':
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3174346/1/High_School High School]]'' probably takes the cake. All the characters are teenagers. [[spoiler:Pig-pen gets Violet pregnant. Snoopy gets rabies, kills Woodstock and Linus and infects Sally with the disease. Schroeder is a [[DepravedHomosexual gay psychopath]] who kills Lucy, kills the rabid Snoopy, and then admits his love to Linus as he dies. Peppermint Patty and Marcie are {{les|Yay}}bians with AIDS. Charlie Brown is {{emo|Teen}} and commits suicide.]]
** The ''Webcomic/WeaponBrown'' series is a twisted version of the Peanuts characters All Grown Up in a post-apocalyptic world. Nearly ''everything'' that's ever been on the funny pages makes a cameo, but notable major characters are "Chairman Horns" from ''ComicStrip/{{Dilbert}}'', "Warden King" and The Wizard from ''ComicStrip/TheWizardOfId'', "Anne" from ''ComicStrip/LittleOrphanAnnie'', and "Pops" (from ''Thimble Theatre'', but you know him better as ComicStrip/{{Popeye}}). And then there's [=CAL-v.1n=].
* It probably won't take long for someone to find a ''ComicStrip/CalvinAndHobbes'' dark fic, such as ''FanFic/CampNightmare''. Calvin is signed up for a day camp which has a really cheery atmosphere and people dressed like clowns...[[spoiler: then Calvin and Hobbes discover a room full of the corpses of partially eaten children and it goes all downhill from there]].
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4567411/ Tiger Chronicles: Catch 22 Syndrome]]. In it, after narrowly avoiding summer school in a heavy-handed boot camp, Calvin begins to research this supposed place of reform... only to find a conspiracy devoted to barbaric ideology. Very dark and with heavy themes of child abuse, but beautifully-written.
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12285813/1/Stripes-or-Pink Stripes or Pink]] is a crossover between ''Calvin and Hobbes'', WesternAnimation/ThePinkPanther, and [[spoiler:Franchise/NancyDrew]]. It features elements that are pretty dark for C&H and PP, such as a criminal organization that sends a cold-blooded attacker after [[spoiler:Nancy]], [[AdultFear putting Calvin and the others in danger.]]
** ''Calvin and Hobbes'' invites a whole category of DarkFic, dark cartoons, etc., in which Calvin comes to realize that Hobbes is really a stuffed toy, and the live tiger was a figment of his imagination.
* Arguably, ''Webcomic/GarfieldMinusGarfield''. [[ComicStrip/{{Garfield}} Jon]] is clearly insane in those, after all...

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* Somehow, someone managed to write darkfic for ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'', the God-tier of {{Crapsack World}}s. In ''FanFic/TheShapeOfTheNightmareToCome'', the [[BloodKnight Orks]] and [[HordeOfAlienLocusts Tyranids]] fuse to become an unimaginably powerful new organism to eat a ''third'' of all life in galaxy, the Astronomicon collapses leaving humanity to [[VestigialEmpire fracture into innumerable fiefdoms]], the [[TheLegionsOfHell hordes of Chaos]] spew from the [[NegativeSpaceWedgie Eye of Terror]] to carve a quarter of the galaxy as their dominion, [[EldritchAbomination the Void Dragon and the Nightbringer]] awaken to lead their legions of impossibly advanced machines, the numerous vicious aliens the Imperium was holding back come out to play, and all of even the most marginally heroic characters die, go insane, or [[HeWhoFightsMonsters become monsters]]. The sequel, ''FanFic/TheAgeOfDusk'', is in some ways ''worse''. Although it [[AWorldHalfFull does get better in places]]...
* Some of the FlavorText in TabletopGame/TwilightSparklesSecretShipficFolder references what appear to be dark fics. The most common source is Of Ponies And Peril, which apparently has Rarity as an evil dictator and might also involve time travel somehow...

* ''Theatre/LittleShopOfHorrors'' is somewhat dark at times on its own, but somewhere on Website/DeviantART, some fanfics are, instead of a surreal musical romantic comedy from the 80's based off of a dark comedy from the 60's, quite dark and dramatic, such as [[http://mjsmoothcriminal999.deviantart.com/art/Seymour-s-Nightmare-155889912 Seymour's Nightmare]].

[[folder: Toys]]
* The original [[Toys/LEGODinoAttack Dino Attack]] line was just a couple of guys with high-tech vehicles and over-the-top weaponry fighting mutant dinosaurs in a city for no particular reason. ''Roleplay/DinoAttackRPG'' manages to take the vague premise and run it into a much DarkerAndEdgier drama. In the RPG, the mutant dinosaur rampage isn't just affecting a city, but it's a global catastrophe ([[spoiler: planned by [[EldritchAbomination the Darkitect]]]]). Instead of just four guys, there are over two hundred people fighting to save the planet, many of whom have [[DarkAndTroubledPast depressing backstories]], psychological issues, and [[CharacterDevelopment character arcs]] with tragic consequences. The rest of the story is filled to the brim with death, destruction, genocide, drugs, alcohol, sexism, smoking, homophobia, child abuse, murder, betrayal, and torture, just to name a few. There's even an [[WhatIf alternate ending]] that ends with an EarthShatteringKaboom and [[KillEmAll everybody dying]]. Did we mention this was based on a Franchise/{{LEGO}} line?
* ''Franchise/MyLittlePony'' had a few of these even predating ''Friendship Is Magic''. While not particularly gorey they tend to be darker than the series, dealing with death and averting the [[AngstWhatAngst usual apathy]] the ponies have towards danger. For example, in ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/980998/1/Eternal Eternal]]'' it's shown that the unicorns are [[Really700YearsOld incredibly old]] and [[TheAgeless immortal]]. Unicorns are essential to the balance of the universe.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''Franchise/CrashBandicoot'': ''FanFic/OutcastBandicoot'' is an incredibly dark and gritty take on the ''Crash Bandicoot'' series. It focuses on the character of [[Characters/CrashBandicoot Crunch Bandicoot]], who is abducted from his home and forced into slavery by Dr. Neo Cortex.
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'': ''FanFic/PrisonIslandBreak'' makes most DarkFic look like a cookbook ''right from the start'', taking the best part of the franchise to prison. We're talking Sonic the Cop Killer here. It's not just the way that the writer seems to find a new way to violate basic human rights in every chapter. It's not even the way that despite the torture, the graphic rape, the murders, the savage bloodshed and the strong drama, they successfully maintain the character's core personalities. It's the way they continue to give their readers the gut-churning feeling that they actually DidDoTheResearch.
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8578349/1/When-Angels-Deserve-to-Die When Angels Deserve to Die]]'', an extraordinarily violent ''VideoGame/SeikenDensetsu3'' where the (surviving) characters get routinely killed, tortured, mentally broken or worse.
* ''Franchise/MegaMan''
** ''[[http://maelgrim.tripod.com/rockint.html Rockman: the Robot War]]'': Creative liberties with the characters aside, the result is a deconstruction of the games: Wily [[spoiler:starts out trying to prove that removing humans from industry would destroy mankind, aligns with the Human Supremacy League, a robot hate group/terrorist organization, but is ultimately driven insane from his efforts]], why the human military doesn't get involved in the fighting, the robot masters are mass produced, and Rock is creative with his weapons, like using Rolling Cutter to [[spoiler:decapitate Iceman]].
** One can't mention "Mega Man" and "Dark Fic" in a single sentence without thinking of Music/TheProtomen first.
** ''VideoGame/MegaManX'', being a DarkerAndEdgier SequelSeries, has a lot of potential for dark fics, considering that most of the enemies are driven insane by a virus and that there's a near genocidal war going on. Darkfics usually center on torture/rape by Mavericks, fanatic between humans and reploids (usually where reploids are [[JustAMachine badly mistreated]]), and the horrible things that could happen if [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Zero ever truly went evil]].
* ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'':
** Yahtzee of ''WebAnimation/ZeroPunctuation'' fame [[http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/reviews/animalcrossing.htm managed]] to make ''Animal Crossing'' look like ''Franchise/SilentHill''.
** ''LetsPlay/TheTerribleSecretOfAnimalCrossing'' makes the above look like ''Franchise/CareBears'' [[JustForFun/XMeetsY meets]] ''Franchise/TheSmurfs'', managing to turn the DS ''Animal Crossing'' into the most depressing and psychotic thing imaginable. Mention "the Mouse" anyone who read the LP and watch them shudder.
** [[http://www.bogleech.com/ Scythemantis']] contribution to ''Animal Crossing'' darkfic, ''[[http://www.bogleech.com/ac.html WHERE AM I]]'', is a combination of SurrealHorror and one man's descent into madness.
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/2721266 Reset]]'' deconstructs the concept of what happens when you reset your town. There are heavy implications the previous protagonist died.
** ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/1754917 Destroy Me, Please]]'' has the player character as [[DrivenToSuicide suicidal]] and destroying their house so they won't leave anything behind. [[spoiler:Isabelle [[InterruptedSuicide saves them]] though.]]
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9591353/1/Happy-Birthday Happy Birthday]]'' has the mayor missing for twenty years, which is implied to be the player not playing their game anymore. Isabelle displays UndyingLoyalty despite all of this and stays in the town despite everyone leaving and it turning to shambles. [[spoiler:She dies at the end.]]
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11452943/1/Isabelle-wants-to-leave Isabelle Wants To Leave]]'' is a horror fic involving a glitchy copy of ''New Leaf''.
* Chewbot's other LetsPlay, the one (link missing) of ''VideoGame/TheOregonTrail''. It turns a gentle educational sim into a hellish-and-funny action thriller.
* ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'' fans just seem to refuse to give the characters (especially the Pyro) happy backstories.
** ''FanFic/WithApologiesToHarlanEllison'', which is a horrifying homage to ''Literature/IHaveNoMouthAndIMustScream'' with a twist, with several sequel fics written by different authors.
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6653732/1/ Why The Rainbows Make Me Cry]]'' has its' fair share of tragic character backgrounds. This time around, the focal character turns out to be the [[JerkAss Scout]], explaining why he tends to get upset over a certain line of Spy's dialogue... and dear god, the explanation is just [[TearJerker heartrending]]. [[spoiler:Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to be a KarmaHoudini.]]
* The {{Webcomic}} ''[[http://www.mighthavebeen.net/ My Name Is Might Have Been]]'' is a darkfic based on ''VideoGame/GuitarHero'' and ''VideoGame/RockBand''.
* ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'' is very far toward the idealistic side of the [[SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism sliding scale]], full of bright colors and empowering morals. But since almost none of the characters have any [[ParentalAbandonment living family]], the Exspheres that give the protagonists extra power are not only made from [[PoweredByAForsakenChild human souls]], but those souls are implied in some cases to be [[AndIMustScream still conscious]], and you have the option of [[spoiler:killing the HandsomeLech]], the canon seems practically ''designed'' to inspire Dark Fic.
* This is extremely common in ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' fanfic. Like ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'', the canon certainly gives many hooks for dark fics, what with the Nobodies and their quasi-existences, the various Disney villains, and such. And if all else fails, one can exploit TheMultiverse to simply send the cast to a [[CrapsackWorld particularly dark setting]]:
** There are numerous "Organization 13 running a brothel" fanfics, which generally focus on "LOL SEX MAKES MY FIC EDGY." One fic, ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3335160/1/o_b_l_i_v_i_o_n oblivion]]'', is inspired by Toni Morrison's ''Literature/{{Beloved}}'', beginning with Axel having killed the rest of the Organization and being haunted by Roxas, who is violently unhappy about his state. Most people focus on the unsettling plot and Roxas The Angry Ghost, but the aching dynamic between Axel and Roxas has been commented on by more discerning readers.
** One of the better examples of this genre is ''All_the_Roads_We_Have_To_Walk All The Roads We Have To Walk'', which tosses Sora through a keyhole into a "shadow dimension" of sorts and charges him with finding a way home. Despite being a darkfic, the series maintained much of the tone of the original series simply by taking the darkest moments of the games and using them as a baseline for the overall tone of the series; it isn't dark so much as it is dark''er'', and much closer to the center of the [[SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism Sliding Scale]] than the main series. Granted, there are some ''very'' dark moments (just to name one, Halloween Town comes with its' own {{Heartless}} {{Expy}} of [[Franchise/SilentHill Pyramid Head]]) but the situation ''never'' feels completely hopeless, and the series comes [[FanFicRecs/KingdomHearts highly recommended]] even for people who usually avoid darkfics like the plague.
* In-universe example: ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor'', at one point, involves Luigi going off on his own journey through the Waffle Kingdom, which is, if anything, rather comical (as his helpers will tell you). At some point, a book of his travels is published, which surgically removes any comedy his journey may have had and replaces it with overly-dramatic PurpleProse.
* ''VideoGame/{{Bully}}'' fandom had some of this. It's not even that optimistic a fandom. Some of it's well pulled off - [[{{Deconstruction}} taking things that were punchlines in the game and making them shockingly serious]] - and some of it... [[{{Wangst}} isn't.]]
* ''VideoGame/{{Touhou}}'' games are based on {{Excuse Plot}}s of some {{Youkai}} being dumb or just plain bored and end with a SpotOfTea or some similar meeting of all the main characters, [[ImprobablyFemaleCast heroines]] and [[GoodAllAlong "villainesses"]] alike, but for every {{WAFF}} or SliceOfLife fanfiction there's a darkfic to counter it. The mountains of FridgeHorror and being a definite CrapsaccharineWorld don't exactly help, humans almost completely at the mercy of the incredibly powerful youkai that can (and have) put the entirety of Gensokyo at risk on a whim, and despite [[CuteMonsterGirl their appearance]] a lot of characters are derived from and/or have the potential to be some truly horrifying creatures.
** Almost every Western fan will know what you're talking about if you mention ''[[http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Doyora A Bad End]]''. It ''starts'' with an AxCrazy Kaguya declaring war on Gensokyo, and escalates from there. It is running on RuleOfFunny - no one cares about anyone dying and it runs on BlackComedy.
** ''Fanfic/TouhouIbunshu'' is an AlternateUniverseFic that takes a far more "realistic" view of the aforementioned powerful creatures and the incidents they cause, explored in detail to milk the threat they represent for all it's worth, with things such as an [[MadwomanInTheAttic insane]] {{p|ersonOfMassDestruction}}owerhouse, a [[ManipulativeBastard scheming]] [[RealityWarper quasi-god]], and a [[WhoWantsToLiveForever deranged immortal]] portrayed as terrifying as they can possibly be.
** ''FanFic/ImperfectMetamorphosis'' is a DeconstructionFic not only of the games itself, but of popular {{Alternative Character Interpretation}}s and {{Fandom Specific Plot}}s in the fandom, and boy does it show. The ''[[NonIndicativeFirstEpisode first chapter]]'' ends with a character getting ''eaten alive'', ''two'' different {{Eldritch Abomination}}s start having their fun, there's brutal violence, MindRape, [[ScienceIsBad horrifying experiments]], and the main characters are too busy with their politics and centuries-old grudges to do anything about it. Even the [[NarrativeFiligree ancillary]] WorldBuilding shows that Gensokyo is a nasty place for the unprepared and unwary.
** And then ''WebAnimation/DiamondInTheRoughTouhou'' manages to challenge both fics above by simply having the least amount of modifications to the source material, showing how dark things can get to outsiders, [[DeconstructorFleet deconstructing the entirety]] of the SelfInsertFic tropes.
** ''Reimu Surrenders and is Destroyed'' is considered one of the most repulsive {{Hentai}} {{Doujinshi}}s to be released about the series (once again links will not and '''should not''' be provided) which involves a BroughtDownToNormal Reimu encountering a lowlife in an alleyway. Once again, it's a {{Hentai}}. Do the math. '''Graphic''' for it's eleven-page length (a safe way to put it), to the point that several hentai sites don't even allow it.
** ''[[http://www.touhou-project.com/storylist.php?title=A+Scarlet-Stained+Memoir&author=&board A Scarlet-Stained Memoir]]'' is a finished CYOA that takes a darker view of the Touhou universe, particularly the Scarlet Devil Mansion and it's residents.
** We have the ''Fanfic/Gensokyo20XX'' series, in which most of it main portion of which is a of [[AlternateUniverseFic Alternate Universe Fics]] and [[DeathFic Death Fics]], which is kicked off by Gensokyo's destruction and things have downhill since then, with insanity, persecution, suicide attempts, and various other things. By Gensokyo 20XXV, it lightens up.
* One of the more well written dark fics in the VideoGame/SoulSeries is an as yet completed fic called ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4475270/1/The_Pitfalls_of_Madness The Pitfalls of Madness]]'' featuring the main character Cassandra slowly going insane.
* The ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' fanfic series, beginning with ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4273176/1/Eromenos_The_Beginning Eromenos: The Beginning]]'', is pretty awful. It features Cloud getting raped by Sephiroth, and its sequels make Cloud into a sadistic abuser himself.
* ''WebAnimation/DeadFantasy'' combines characters from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'', ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'', and ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' and puts them in darker and more violent situations than in their respective canons (especially for the former two).
* ''VideoGame/KatamariDamacy'':
** A parodic example: ''[[http://www.gametrailers.com/video/katamari-damacy-once-upon-a/58485 Death Ball]]'', ''Katamari Damacy'' in the style of ''ComicBook/SinCity''.
** ''FanFic/KatamariDamacyTheShockingTrueStory'' features heavy amounts of AndIMustScream.
* The very aptly named ''KnightsOfTheOldRepublic'' fic called ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1883982/1/bWorst_b_bCase_b_bScenario_b Worst Case Scenario]]''.
* ''VideoGame/SpaceChannel5'' has some pretty dark fics despite being a happy series. ''[[http://smashqueen.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2pk47c Space Channel Sacrfice]]'', which crosses the series with ''Alice Human Sacrifice'', and ''[[http://smashqueen.deviantart.com/#/d2tiq0p Light Character Study: Purge]]'', which gives a new look on Purge, one that people may miss.
* ''VideoGame/DragonsLair'' has inspired a darkfic that can be found [[http://mcbain755.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2sh8hq here]].
* The normally comedic ''VideoGame/SpaceQuest'' has [[http://wiw.org/~jess/fanfic.html at least a couple]]. ''The Middle of the Night'' deals with Roger not quite being the idiot he appear to be. ''Burn, Xenon, Burn'' follows Roger's son from the future, the horrific implications of ''VideoGame/SpaceQuestIVRogerWilcoAndTheTimeRippers'', and portraying an extremely unflattering depiction of Xenonian society.
* This seems to be a popular trend in ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' fanfiction, though in a world with [[OlympusMons god-like beings fighting each other]] a certain amount of dark is expected when [[HumansAreBastards humans]] control them:
** The multiple-novel-sized ''[[http://web.archive.org/web/20120626101741/http://members.iinet.net.au/~aceywacey/pokemon.htm Pokemon Master]]'' claims to be "the first major '''Dark''' ''Pokemon'' Fanfiction released on the Internet", while ''FanFic/LatiasJourney'' is a standout example.
** Cornova's Fanfic/PokeWars, comprising of multiple stories, is a particularly dark example that shows what has become of the world when Ho-oh decides to commit genocide against the human race.
** There's an urban legend of a hacked ''Pokemon'' game dubbed "Pokemon: Lost Silver" that is pretty macabre, nightmareish and MindScrew-y. It's unknown whether the game was real, or the guy who wrote about it just made it up, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKnCBwsa-bU but it exists now]].
** Similarly, the {{Creepypasta}} "Pokemon Black" (these days it's usually dubbed "Creepy Black" or something along those lines to avoid confusion with [[VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite the Generation V title]]) grants the player a Lavender Town ghost as a permanent party member, with the ability to [[KilledOffForReal curse]] enemy Pokemon and their trainers. At the end the would-be KarmaHoudini protagonist is himself cursed by the ghost, resulting in a fade to black, a game freeze, and a deletion of the player's save file.
** Quite a few Webcomic/NuzlockeComics could be counted as this, though the successful ones are closer to EarnYourHappyEnding. They still generally involve a ''lot'' more death and angst than the source material, and one fan comic in particular even has multiple references to ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion''.
* For the ''Franchise/ProfessorLayton'' games:
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12448932/1/Don-Paolo-s-Day-Planner Don Paolo's Day Planner]], which is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin a page out of Don Paulo's day planner.]] Don Paolo has usually been a straightforward DastardlyWhiplash, often [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain played for comedy]] with a mildly sympathetic backstory. This fic gives the readers a look into his mind, and reveals just how [[DespairEventHorizon depressed]] and AxCrazy he really is, while undergoing SanitySlippage. The whole thing is played for BlackComedy.
* ''VideoGame/TheSims'', due to how players can essentially create their own stories in the game, has a large roster of Dark Fics. [[http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sims_Wiki:Fanon_Portal The Sims Wiki's Fanon Portal]] features a lot. One in particular, "[[http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Fanon:Night_of_the_Living_PlumbBob Night of the Living PlumbBob]]," stands out. It features Sunset Valley being victim to a zombie outbreak, many characters dying, such as [[spoiler:Erin Kennedy, Gwen Glover, Agnes Crumplebottom, and CORNELIA AND MORTIMER GOTH (implied)]], and TheGovernment choosing to destroy Sunset Valley completely.
* ''Fanfic/QueenOfSorrow'' and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4977757/1/Curse_of_the_Triforce Curse of the Triforce]]'' by the same author do this for ''VideoGame/FireEmblem'' and ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'', respectively, mostly by applying the the realistic dangers and side-effects of a real war to the setting.
* ''Raccoon'' is a ''Franchise/SlyCooper'' kill fic (Dimitri brutally tortures and murders Sly), which, to some, has to be read to be believed. The author apologizes in advance to anyone who gets nightmares after reading it.
* ''VideoGame/CaveStory'' is plenty dark to begin with [[SurpriseCreepy despite first impressions]], but ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2914689/1/The-Stranger-I-Knew The Stranger I Knew]]'' makes things even worse, [[spoiler:complete with a DownerEnding]]. If you didn't hate the Doctor before, you will after reading this fic.
* ''Fanfic/TheNextFrontier'' ended up becoming this by the standards of the ''VideoGame/KerbalSpaceProgram'' fandom, especially in the last act. It doesn't go into {{gorn}} territory, in fact by the standards of what it's a crossover with it's fairly tame, but it still has a significant amount of on-page violence.
* A good portion of ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' fanfics are this, especially those based on ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' and those based on ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess''. Averting BloodlessCarnage and delving into the psychological aspects of the series is a common occurrence:
** ''FanFic/ZeldasHonor'': Despite being based on a game franchise aimed at kids and youth, the story is quite dark; enveloping themes such as war, death, rape, abortion and more in graphic detail. A far cry from the sunshine feel of most Zelda games.
* ''FanFic/FateDeceived'' follows after the events in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'', although ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'' was meant for an older audience anyway, this FanFic takes it to a whole deeper level with the level of maturity in relationships between the teenage protagonists, sexual tension and actions as well as the over the top violence and sequences.
* Deconstructing the premise of VideoGame/PlantsVsZombiesGardenWarfare is already a rampant FandomSpecificPlot for the whole franchise, but some particular fics stand out for how dark they are in comparison to others:
** The series starting with ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11462596/1/PVZGW-I-ll-Fight-Till-The-End I'll Fight 'til The End]]'' is filled with enough themes of abuse and war trauma to not fit on this page (it even ''starts'' with the protagonist completely pushed into a corner knowing that the [[ChildSoldiers almost-underaged]] leader was willing [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior to beat him to a pulp after being told that zombies do have feelings.]]) One prime example of the themes present occurs in the sequel, where [[spoiler:the protagonist finds his DisappearedDad and remembers just ''why'' he ran away from him and invoked an inversion of IHaveNoSon. He then [[FromBadToWorse enters a trance and kills his own father]] as a KarmicDeath for the latter's disregard for human life. It's enough to scare his lover and second-in-command into slapping him and forcing his team to desert him. Followed by what is [[SerialEscalation collectively an essay's worth]] of MyGodWhatHaveIDone. [[TearJerker Ouch.]]]]
* Even a fluffy game about fashion like ''VideoGame/StyleSavvy'' has dark fics:
** In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8215755/1/Help-Me Help Me]]'' the protagonist suffers from an eating disorder and depression brought on by body shaming. She is eventually DrivenToSuicide.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11280160/1/Know-Me Know Me]]'' has the protagonist as a StepfordSmiler who is losing her identity as she becomes more popular in the fashion industry.
* ''Fanfic/OfSheepAndBattleChicken'', written by ''[[http://logicalpremise.org/ Logical Premise]]'', is this to ''VideoGame/MassEffect''. The civilised Galaxy is [[CrapsackWorld not a nice place to live]], [[EldritchAbomination the Reapers]] are capable of [[RealityWarper warping the reality]] and [[UnscrupulousHero Sarah Shepard]] is, well, known as TheButcher.

* ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'' has more than a few dark fics due to the sheer amount of FridgeHorror it has. Most commonly focused on the doomed timelines, but several [=AUs=] about a dystopian non-sgrub Alternia, a post-game world where either trolls or humans have enslaved the other species, or just canon continuity stories with a lot of rape, death, {{Wangst}} and abuse. One such fic is ''Reprise'', which is essentially 30-odd chapters of Gamzee Makara being ''horribly'' raped and tortured by his ancestors, the [[MonsterClown Grand Highblood]] and [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen the Condesce]]. The sequel, ''Fanfic/{{Hivefled}}'', is similarly dark (though less graphic) and expands on the setting and characters' history in ways which serve largely to make things somehow even worse, for example Gamzee only being one in a ''[[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters very]]'' long line of victims, but at the same time maintains the potential to EarnYourHappyEnding.
* [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4647681/1/FROST This]] might be deserving of note for being a dark fic in Website/FanFictionDotNet's rather small ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'' section. The actual comic got hit by CerebusSyndrome for a while, but ''ye gods''...

[[folder:Web Original]]
* A disturbing amount of Website/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses fanfiction is Dark Fic (the other half is CrackFic), mostly due playing crazy comedy characters for drama and the challenge of still keeping their personalities intact is more fun than it should be.
** FanFic/ThatGuyWithTheGlassesInSpace. If a group of nerdy, fun internet personas becoming {{br|eakTheCutie}}oken - but very, ''very'' Badass - [[TheWoobie woobies]] due to war and experiments isn't dark then we don't know what is.
** The Hooker Verse doesn't do too badly either in this department, either. The only difference is that it replaces war with, well, the internet personas either whoring themselves out, becoming pimps or paying for said whores.
* ''FanFic/MurderersRow'' is a '''brutal''' prison AU fic for ''Machinima/RedVsBlue''. There is [[KilledOffForReal death]], [[ColdBloodedTorture disembowlment]], and [[RapeAsDrama a terrifying rape scene.]]
* The fiction blog ''Literature/HitherbyDragons'' tries this with many of its entries, spanning from ''TheSmurfs'' (undergoing the Trail of Tears), to ''MyLittlePony'' (during the apocalypse), to ''Glow Worm'' (as a demon, fighting a doomed battle against worse horrors), to ''Literature/TheLionTheWitchAndTheWardrobe'' (the heroine dies early on), to stereotypical high school MagicalGirl stories (the magical girls are the Four HorsemenOfTheApocalypse). In the bittersweet style of Hitherby, some such stories (like the one where Series/{{Teletubbies}} are suffering eternal punishment for their sins) turn things around on the reader ''again'' and manage to end on an uplifting note, while others do not.
* ''Literature/SailorNothing'' takes the ''Franchise/SailorMoon'' style MagicalGirl genre and {{deconstruct|ionFic}}s it into a realistically horrifying tale similar, yet different to ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''. The story follows a teenage girl who, after [[JumpedAtTheCall jumping at the chance to be a hero]], spends most of her time fighting evil rather than making friends, doing well in school, and generally living her life. This is made worse by the fact that it is during high school, so her social reputation is constantly demolished, and that she can never truly quit being a hero.
* A popular meme on Website/{{Tumblr}} involves "genre swap" -- i.e., taking carefully-selected screenshots of a particular fandom and arranging them and moderately manipulating their tint, exposure, brightness, etc to make them fit a completely different genre. You've got some dark-to-light -- ''Series/{{Dexter}}'' as a romantic comedy! ''Series/BreakingBad'' as a Rogers and Hammerstein musical ("Albuquerque's Alive With The Sound Of Dealing")! -- but others are light-to-dark, such as ''Series/{{Glee}}'' as a [[http://all-delightedpeople.tumblr.com/post/8243635716/genre-swap-glee-as-a-horror-film horror film]], ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' as a [[http://echofades.tumblr.com/post/3623885710 murder mystery]] (involving the murder of the eponymous mother), or ''Disney/{{Tangled}}'' as a [[http://skysearcher.tumblr.com/post/9674849908/genre-swap-tangled-as-a-psychological-thriller psychological thriller.]]
* Given the material, some of the timelines and stories on Website/AlternateHistoryDotCom arguably fall under this in relation to AlternateHistory. These are generally brutal, {{Crapsack World}}s ranging from victorious Nazis to [[WorldWarIII nuclear holocaust]]. One specific example would be ''Literature/AWorldOfLaughterAWorldOfTears'', which follows the unforeseen consequences of Walt Disney's election into the White House.
** ''Literature/ForAllTime'' is basically what happens when FinaglesLaw is applied to history. Here, FDR dies of a stroke two weeks after Pearl Harbor, leaving the far less competent Henry Wallace in charge of the country during World War II. GoneHorriblyWrong doesn't even begin to describe it. Here, the most marginalized and insane figures become prominent leaders, ranging from President [[spoiler: Jim Jones]] to Emperor [[spoiler: Jean-Bedel Bokassa]] of France to [[spoiler: Andrei Chikatilo]] becoming premier of the Soviet Union, nations break up, genocides and civil wars happen on a daily basis, and nuclear and chemical weapons become common tools for war.
* The infamous ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'' fanfic ''Blood Rose'' is pretty much the embodiment of this trope. Gore, graphic violence, cannibalism, and sexual assault are relatively common (and sometimes take place ''all at the same time''.) What makes it even more disturbing is that Ruby, who is easily the most innocent and naive person in the show itself, is generally the one doing all of this. Unlike most fanfics of this degree of violence, though, it actually has a pretty decent plot.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}}'':
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3366212/1/The_Burbank_Confession The Burbank Confession]]'', where toons experience prejudice from humans, to the point that one who is seen AT ALL is shot with a turpentine bullet. Dot flips off a cop, bloody battles ensue, [[spoiler:BUGS FRIGGING BUNNY]] DIES, and many other equally pleasant things happen.
** ''[[http://http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6260773/1/Bonds Bonds]]'', in which the Warners, years after the end of ''Animaniacs'', along with the rest of the cast of the show and a few characters from ''WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures'' and ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'', confront a mystery regarding the death of Slappy and the disappearance of toons in North America. It also features a very unique view of the world in which not only ''Animaniacs'', but all cartoons co-exist. Oh, and also has romance.
* Somewhat "closer" to the original Looney Tunes is ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5504529/1/Rules-of-Survival Rules of Survival]]'', in which the author speculates on the origins of PettingZooPeople in the least over-the-top way possible (at least at first). It's mercifully short, but an alternate title may as well be "How to turn '[[WesternAnimation/BugsBunny What's up, Doc?]]' and '[[WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck You're dethpicable]]' into {{Tear Jerker}}s."
* ''Franchise/{{Transformers}}''-related Dark Fics are not uncommon. Unsurprisingly, they tend towards war stories.
** For example, fan-comic "[[http://tf-war-journal.deviantart.com/ War Journal]]" ends with an outnumbered, outgunned group of Autobots preparing to make their last stand... A [[BolivianArmyEnding Decepticon Army Ending]], if you will.
* There are a number of ''Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' Dark Fics. The general public may look upon the Turtles as kid friendly fare thanks to AdaptationDisplacement, but the fics in question hearken back to the days of the original comics, which got pretty damned dark and violent. Yoshi's backstory alone was nowhere near kid-friendly. There is a [[http://www.fanfiction.net/community/Beautiful_Dark/14830/ Fan Fiction Dot Net community]] devoted to these darkfics, many of which are quite well-constructed.
** ''Webcomic/MutantNinjaTurtlesGaiden'', a fancomic that deals with the four turtles growing up with psychological problems after a horrific incident, wrapped up in a mystery regarding a new turtle (who has his own set of issues).
* ''WesternAnimation/KimPossible'':
** Darkfics for the series are not uncommon either, usually involving the return of Ron's [[SuperpoweredEvilSide evil side]], or Kim turning to evil. [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3962528/1/Karma One featuring Kim]] holds that the [[MirrorMoralityMachine good/evil switching]] [[AppliedPhlebotinum device]] will make a moderately good person moderately evil, and a very good person ''very'' evil. Having been through it, Kim tortures Shego with scalpels and pliers for her amusement. It's well written, but (obviously) ''really'' unpleasant.
** The other main style is turning HarmlessVillain Dr. Drakken into someone... {{not so harmless|Villain}}.
** A common FandomSpecificPlot involves what if Shego hadn't been unharmed at the end of ''So The Drama''. What if she thought Kim had tried to kill her, or even what if Kim ''did'' kill her?
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1695555/1/Paragon Paragon]]'', pictured above. It's a very well done horror story that involves Josh Mankey cursing Ron with the ability to [[ISeeDeadPeople see the dead]]. His ultimate goal is to [[GrandTheftMe use Kim as a vessel for his mother's spirit]], since she is the paragon of perfection in his eyes. [[spoiler:The story ends with Ron's spirit in Josh's body, so Kim can finally be with him without worrying what the rest of the school thinks, but the experience has left them so psychologically damaged that they decide to [[SuicidePact kill themselves.]]]]
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3565753/1/The-Touch-of-Green-Fire The Touch Of Green Fire]]'' has Shego ending up with a life-threatening illness and Kim having to save her while [[LesYay dealing with her own feelings for Shego]].
* There are fan made webcomics of both Nickelodeon's ''WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Doug}}'', the latter dealing with Doug seeking revenge on Skeeter for raping and killing Patty, after which it became SoBadItsGood.
* ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'':
** [[TheMovie "The Ultimate Enemy"]] from [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2874003/1/Anathema Dark Danny's POV]], or [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3088970/1/Benediction him escaping]], or [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2910656/1/Checkmate Danny joining Vlad]] and ''staying'' even ''after'' a death threat to Jazz is lifted.
** Despite its generally lighthearted mood, the show has proven itself to be incredibly prolific when it comes to fics regarding torture, experimentation, and dissection. One of the most famous of these is ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7476808/1/ Phantom of Truth]]'' by [=HaiJu=]. Told from Maddie Fenton's perspective as she observes the infamous Phantom in a government facility, the fic contains several instances of electrocution torture and in one chapter includes an incredibly detailed description of the severing of Phantom's hand. Another one is ''FanFic/LabRat'' by [=AnneriaWings=]. Not for the faint of heart, this 20K+ fic is one of the goriest dissection fics out there.
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' seems to practically hemmorhage darkfics. For an example of a Cartman centered dark fic, we have ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4855701/1/bPlaying_b_bGod_b Playing God]]'', in which Cartman [[spoiler:matter-of-factly and ''brutally'' murders Kenny ([[TheyKilledKenny yeah, we know]], but it's taken seriously this time) as an ''experiment to see if he'd come back after being murdered in cold blood'']]. Everyone being in-character makes it worse.
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' fandom breeds darkfic almost as much as it does {{shipping}}. While vastly varied, it can generally be divided into three main groups: a) From before the series begins, speculating on what a ''century long'' war would do to the world, b) During the series, exploring the minds of what are essentially ChildSoldiers and the implications of a lot of the on-screen nastiness (such as the main characters' impressive body count), as well as the depredations of [[TheEmpire the Fire Nation]], or c) Set after the series, deconstructing the HappilyEverAfter ending on the entirely reasonable basis that a lot of the Fire Nationals aren't just going to accept peace, and the rest of the world isn't going the let them go unpunished. AlternateUniverseFic, for example the Fire Nation winning the war, is also popular.
** Anything serious by [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1549499/marvel26 marvel26]] can give chills. ''Especially'' when the FridgeLogic behind it all makes sense. His story ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4198758/1/Manifest_Destiny Manifest Destiny]]'' is a chilling depiction of the Dark Side of Aang's love for Katara to it's extreme. And by the same author is ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4845588/1/His_Fathers_Son His Father's Son]]'', a story that explores Zuko as Fire Lord Post-Series.
** [[http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Avatar_Wiki:Avatar_Fanon The ATLA Wiki's fanon portal]] features a large number of DarkerAndEdgier sequel fics, AU fics, and prequel fics. A:TLAR gets some attention purely for being recognized as being one of the closest to an unacceptable (by ATLA wiki rules) R rating, without being out-and-out graphic. My Own Savior is particularly dark.
** ''When All Your Dreams Come True'' is easily one of the darkest out there. Zuko succeeds in capturing Team Avatar early in their journey. The result? Sokka is quickly KilledOffForReal; Katara [[TongueTrauma has her tongue cut out]] and is made into a training exercise for Firebenders to practice fighting a Waterbender, eventually ending up like a proto-Hama; Aang is [[EyeScream blinded]] and condemned to spend the rest of his life as a prisoner; Toph, who doesn't even appear in Book One, ends up dying as well; Finally, Zuko is driven insane by his guilt and drinks himself into oblivion. He ends up creating an elaborate delusion where he joins Aang and teaches him firebending, falls in love with Katara, and they go on to overthrow Ozai and end the war.
** For some reason the author gave it a T rating, but ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7181212/1/Lady-Noir Lady Noir]]'' is creepy, especially given that in ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'', Aang is dead and Katara is alive.
* While ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'' isn't exactly a cheery series to begin with, it usually addresses dark and serious issues (the main character ''is'' trying to enslave and/or genocide humanity, after all) with relative sarcasm or surrealism. Fanfiction writers, on the other hand, often take these more seriously, which is relatively easy to write considering the CrapsackWorld in which the series occurs. Often this includes a.) Zim destroying the world and feeling bad about it afterwards, b.) Dib killing Zim and feeling bad about it afterwards or c.) Zim or Dib simply realizing how horrible their lives are and killing themselves.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'' has enough of these to create a [[http://www.fanfiction.net/community/Dark_Fairly_ODD_Parents_Fanfics/3386/ community for them]].
* There exists a Dark Fic, aptly (ironically?) named "Twilight on London," that manages to turn much of the Creator/{{Disney}}[=/=]Creator/DonBluth Mouseworld on its head and rework it into a [[Film/TheGodfather Godfather-like]] tale taking place in 1800s London, replete with sex, beatings, murders, and all-around Canon/character-breakage.
* It is pretty much natural for ''WesternAnimation/ChipNDaleRescueRangers'' FanFiction to be DarkerAndEdgier than the show itself. Yes, it is about cute and fuzzy little rodents, but these cute and fuzzy little rodents are quite elaborate and multi-dimensional characters in a rescue and [[TheyFightCrime crime-fighting]] team. Many fans feel that Creator/{{Disney}} never really fleshed out the potential of the latter. So must ''CDRR'' FanFiction sends the Rangers into way bigger and more dangerous cases than the show and drives them to their limits and beyond. While not taking anyone OutOfCharacter, building up on established character traits instead, it tends a lot more into action-adventure and drama. Most ''CDRR'' fics that aren't DarkerAndEdgier are parodies on something because there are hardly any SliceOfLife fics.
** ''[[FanFic/TheNowakverse Under The Bridge]]'' is about Gadget's [[LongLostSibling long-lost twin sister]] who wants to kill Gadget because she thinks their father rejected and tried to drown her because she was born as a one-armed albino and not a cute little blonde like Gadget. After several unpleasant encounters, the latter opts for drastic measures to save herself and her friends. It was eventually given a [=MSTing=] co-written by author John Nowak himself.
** ''Webcomic/OfMiceAndMayhem'' is a webcomic (or rather a graphic novel) based on the cartoon that delves into a lot of dark subject matter surrounding a GovernmentConspiracy.
** The ''Rescue Rangers'' fanfic tradition already started out a great deal DarkerAndEdgier than the show itself when its very first real FanFic ever written, ''Fanfic/RhymeAndReason'', was released in 1996: A mysterious villain sends Chip on a dangerous quest all over the city to find his teammates whom said villain threatens to kill by sunset — and puts through an individually tailor-made physical and emotional wringer.
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4602078/1/Challenge_of_the_Super_Friends_The_End Challenge of the Super Friends: The End]]'', where the Legion of Doom travel to a horrific Lovecraftian universe and end up like victims in the ''Film/EventHorizon'' and ''Franchise/{{Hellraiser}}'' films, while the WesternAnimation/{{Superfriends}} themselves become fascistic and attempt to make their world a utopia in the villains' absence.
* Dark ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'' fics are surprisingly (?) common. There's ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4958913/1/The_Reverse_World The Reverse World]]''. ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6139187/1/Lacrimosa Lacrimosa]]'' (seems to be a DeadFic) involves an old partner of Perry's torturing Phineas [[ForTheEvulz for the funsies]]. ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5578088/1/Over_Complexity_is_a_Wonderful_Thing Over Complexity is a Wonderful Thing]]'' and its sequel, ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6214119/1/DoubleCrossed_and_Back_Into_the_Fray DoubleCrossed and Back Into the Fray!]]'' are AlternateUniverse {{War Fic}}s involving the occasional... rather graphic scene (including Irving being blown to dust by a grenade, though it's not like some of the fanbase would mind). [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6085942/1/Discovery_The_Shadow_Chronicles_1 The]] [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6130006/1/Not_The_Only_Ones_The_Shadow_Chronicles_2 Shadow]] [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6366598/1/Shadow_Chronicles_3_Painful_Truth Chronicles]] are pretty basic Dark Fic.
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6572573/1/For_Every_Action For Every Action]]'', a rather disturbing take on ''WesternAnimation/AtomicBetty''. The plot involves the eponymous hero getting sucked into an alternate universe, where ''she'' is the [[BigBad dictator]]. [[HilarityEnsues Various death and carnage ensue]].
* The brilliant ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'' fanfic ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3851787/1/The_Jokers_Wild Joker's Wild]]'' shows what happens when you take a mass murdering psychopath like ComicBook/TheJoker and put him into a light hearted series like the ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'' cartoonverse. It's moments of horrific slaughter are matched by twisted humor. Not surprising considering it's about [[MonsterClown the Joker]].
** The [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4230566/1/Recovery sequels]] [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7255749/1/Titanomachy tops]] it up even further as it explores the negative implications of their actions, brings up sensitive issues like PTSD and rape full front and has the titans commiting a FaceHeelTurn that is apparently portrayed as a good thing.
* ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfTheGalaxyRangers'' was already pretty vicious for a mid-[[TheEighties eighties]] cartoon, but when the fanfic writers get a hold of it, they have zero problem playing up [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar the stuff the writers only got to hint at]], like the [[TrainingFromHell brutality of Wolf Den]], [[CorruptBureaucrat the corruption in Earth's government]], etc. One of the show's writers, Chris "Kaymo" Rowley, made the mistake of joking about the villainess's sexual tastes to the fanfic writers. [[ForegoneConclusion You can probably guess what happened next]]. Taking the crown is [[http://www.annkniggendorf.de/gr/timeline.html Ann Kathrin Kniggendorf]]. Very well-written and exceptionally brutal. The scariest one is "Raumjager," (a timeline where UsefulNotes/NaziGermany not only won, but has gone on to conquer the galaxy, and the normally persecuted Shane is now considered a paragon of the ubermenchen ideal...scarier when you remember [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff that the writer is German herself]]). The nastiest is "The Lie" - massive {{Squick}}, RapeAsDrama, and a very unsettling ending on top of it.
* Unsuprisingly, ''WesternAnimation/JimmyTwoShoes'' is lending itself well to this. Being a kids show that takes place in {{Hell}}, it was asking for it. Take for example, [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5952152/1/Death_among_Misery Death Among Misery]], an unfinished story where an evil being far older and more powerful than even TheDreaded Lucius I returns to terrorize Miseryville and it apparently has some connection to the backstory of Lucius VII and Heloise. Gets a bit gory at some points, case in point.
* Go to a ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}}'' fan site and look for fanfics written by the "Angst Lords" - a number of Dariafic writers who really turn the screws to the characters in the show. What makes the majority of these fics really dark is that they're also really well-written.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'':
** ''Most Wanted'' (since deleted) includes [[spoiler:Mr. Krabs dying (implied), some mysterious knocking and a wolf kidnapping [=SpongeBob=] and throwing him in the back of a truck in chapter 5 (including Mr. Krabs almost being killed in chapter 2), glass getting pushed onto [=SpongeBob=] in chapter 6 leading up to when his arm almost gets sliced off.]] [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking More outrageous, it's rated T.]]
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6916184/1/ Felony]]'' deals with some mysterious disappearances that have been going on in Bikini Bottom in the past few years. Spongebob is getting worried, but he and Patrick decide to go to Goofy Goober's for some ice cream. They end up [[DrunkOnMilk getting drunk]], just like in TheMovie, and get into a barfight. Spongebob is taken to the emergency room, but is ok. Patrick, however, is nowhere to be found. [[spoiler:It turns out Plankton captured Patrick and took him over to the Chum Bucket. Patrick also learns where all the citizens have been disappearing, and what [[IAmAHumanitarian Plankton's been making his chum out of]].]]
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9034613/1/Mortal-Man Mortal-Man]]'' is darker than what the show handles however it isn't uncharacteristically dark. It is about how Spongebob deals with Mermaid Man's death. In the cartoon Mermaid Man has been PutOnTheBus as his voice actor, Creator/ErnestBorgnine, died.
* ''WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy'':
** ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5065029/1/Eddward# Eddward]]'' - Edd has enough of it and decides to murder all his tormentors. [[Administrivia/YouHaveBeenWarned Rated M for all right reasons]]. Its sequel ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5085379/1/Johnny Johnny]]'' is even more terrifing, [[spoiler:going straight into CosmicHorrorStory territory.]]
** ''[[http://http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6920956/1/Forfeit Forefit]]'', which shows what would happen if Ed, Edd and Eddy still maintained their childhood problems four years after the show's end. Gets even darker as the chapters progress.
** Not a fic but there is a popular theory that everyone is DeadAllAlong. It's not taken seriously enough to be {{fanon}} however it has a lot of fanworks about it.
* Two fanfictions in form of webcomics by Creator/{{Bleedman}} are this for various cartoons. ''Webcomic/PowerpuffGirlsDoujinshi'' is this mostly for ''WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory'' and ''WesternAnimation/AtomicBetty'', [[spoiler:having Dee Dee, Mandark and Sparky being killed off]]. ''Webcomic/GrimTalesFromDownBelow'' is this for ''WesternAnimation/TheGrimAdventuresOfBillyAndMandy'' with a bit of other cartoons, by having villains like [[WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom Dark Danny]] and [[WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls Him]] living up to their villainous potential the boundaries of kid-friendly shows couldn't let them dwell into.
* ''FanFic/VindictiveHandOfVengeance'' is a ''WesternAnimation/Ben10UltimateAlien'' fanfic in which Gwen Tennyson is framed for murder and thrown into the Null Void for 16 years. She escapes and sets out on an elaborate RoaringRampageOfRevenge while trying to piece her life back together.
* The ''[[WesternAnimation/BlinkyBill Adventures of Blinky Bill]]'' fanfic ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7782580/1/ Scars Are Forever]]''.
* ''WesternAnimation/YinYangYo'':
** The fic ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5626292/1/ Re: Yin Yang Who?]]''.
** Also, ''Fanfic/CalamityHoppers''.
* Among the increasing amount of ''WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball'' dark fics, there's ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7892013/1/The_Amazing_World_of_Gumball_Rise_of_Darkness Rise Of Darkness]]'' and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7890944/1/Gumball_and_The_Orb_of_Corruption The Orb Of Corruption]]'' both of which are very dark, but especially the latter.[[note]] By the end of Chapter 5, hundreds of innocent tourists at a theme park have been massacred and/or corrupted and turned "horribly evil", Gumball's family have almost been killed repeatedly, and poor Larry has died in a fire at a convenience store.[[/note]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama'':
** ''[[Fanfic/LegacyTotalDrama Legacy]]'' is all about [[DeathFic the repercussions of a violent death]], and the death itself (or more precisely, the mortal wound) is fairly graphic. All this from a comedic show.
** ''Fanfic/TheLegendOfTotalDramaIsland'', a reimagining of the first season, is one of the darkest, if not the darkest [[FandomSpecificPlot competition stories]] in the fandom (at least among those stories where most of the cast doesn't [[TenLittleMurderVictims get murdered]] or have to [[DeadlyGame fight to the death]])--and mostly just because it plays for drama incidents that the original played for laughs.
* ''Fanfic/{{Reborn}}'', as a crossover between ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda2'' and Franchise/TheCrow, is naturally this.
* ''[[http://imago.hitherby.com/2004/02/rainbow-noir/ Rainbow Noir]]'' and its prequel, ''[[http://imago.hitherby.com/2009/12/rainbow-noir-the-mountains-and-the-sky/ The Mountains and the Sky]],'' are a pair of philosophical Literature/HitherbyDragons crossover stories between ''WesternAnimation/RainbowBrite'' and ''Franchise/CareBears'' that focus on the reveal that Wisp is an ArtificialHuman, the death of Starlite, the off-screen destruction of Rainbow Land, the introduction of Nihilism Bear, and the creation of a CrapsackWorld where there is so little color that people will kill each other to get it. Fun!
* ''WesternAnimation/RegularShow'' fan fiction ''Asleep in a Blizzard'' pairs Benson with a snow globe named Evelyn, who suffers at the hands of an abusive boyfriend and [[spoiler: dies with Benson's child (how does candy dispenser sex work?) and Benson kills said abusive boyfriend.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls'' has many especially when you have villains like HIM running around:
** One of the most notable that stands out is Parsec's ''FanFic/ImmortalitySyndrome'' and it's sequels in which [[spoiler: Blossom dies in a battle with Mojo, is resurrected, but after seeing TheNothingAfterDeath, decides to go on a KillEmAll spree. And it just goes downhill from there. The only thing that keeps it from being completely depressing is the final series, ''Solitary Vigil'', in which Bubbles goes to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong.]]
** There is also ''FanFic/{{Villain}}'' which shows what would happen if one of the girls would do FaceHeelTurn. A lot of people die.
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6581000/1/The-Utonium-Trials The Utonium Trials]]'' portrays the girls as immortal and ageless beings who are precocious to CreepyChild levels. The government catches wind of them and takes them from their father because they're artificial humans deemed a danger to society
** The ''FanFic/{{Ladder}}'' series is about the girls each dying but being brought back to life [[spoiler:repeatedly]]. It delves into the psychological aspects of both that and dealing with the sudden loss of family.
* The ''WesternAnimation/LittlestPetShop2012'' fic ''Fanfic/TheTimesTheyAreAChangin'' is all about BreakingTheFellowship: Penny Ling is forced to leave the group when her owners move away, causing the remaining pets' relationships with each other and Blythe to deteriorate.
* ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3442555/1/Street-Sharks-Redux Street Sharks Redux]]'' is what happens when ''WesternAnimation/StreetSharks'' is re-written to include all the FridgeHorror. Events made considerably darker than in the series (such as [[spoiler:the experimentation and brainwashing of Slammu]]), and it delves into a lot of the psychological horror a person would face if they found themselves mutated against their will and forced into hiding while worrying about their loved ones.
* ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'':
** ''[[http://summerlightning.tumblr.com/post/67295734799/ Spindle, Spire]]'' takes the series' CosyCatastrophe and turns it into an AfterTheEnd setting that would make ''VideoGame/{{Fallout}}'' crap its pants. If you don't get bitten by a zombie, eaten by diredogs or have raiders do... [[NoodleIncident things]] to you, you'll eventually rot from the inside out anyway, the only semblance of civilisation is under threat from a previously unknown brainwashing monstrosity, and the main characters are inflicted with every manner of BodyHorror. This eventually culminates in [[spoiler:an ending that ''might'' be called {{bittersweet|Ending}} if you tilt your head and squint a lot.]]
** ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10264436/1/Purpose Purpose]]'' by ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/4816479/nrbuer nrbuer]]'' deals with a confused Finn who eventually joins the isolated human survivors as he is no longer needed as the hero in Ooo. Following this event, Finn eventually leaves Ooo forever and decides to live with the humans for three years. Until the entrance of the AT characters directly caused a spiralling turn against Finn's life, from the loss of his human lover, to the war between humans and mutated creatures as a result of perceived racism and the BigBad Lucien's desire to restore humans to its rightful place. There is also Flame Princess's BrutalHonesty policy taking into its brutal conclusion that caused the Fire Kingdom citizens to dethrone and loathe her because of it, massive distrust between many people, even having an internal war such as the Fire and Candy Kingdom and deaths for many named characters like Cinnamon Bun and Moe.
* ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' has a ton of then. Given the show's nature, this isn't really surprising. It's a horror centric children's cartoon dealing with the supernatural. It's pretty much ''asking'' for dozens of dark fics:
** There is a popular [=AU=] known as "Reverse Pines". As the name implies, it is a role-reversal [=AU=] where Dipper and Mabel are villains. They go into full-blown CreepyTwins territory, murder people, and have supernatural powers.
** [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9626776/1/It-runs-in-the-family It Runs In The Family]] is about Gideon's sadistic cousin, Cashmere Gleeful, getting revenge on the Pines family for getting Gideon arrested and put in jail.
** The same author wrote another story called [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9339288/1/The-seven The Seven]].
** There's also [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9392526/1/Behind-The-Mask Behind The Mask]].
** Behold [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9658620/1/Mabel-The-Sweater-Knitter Mabel The Sweater Knitter]], the Cupcakes of Gravity Falls.
* ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo'' tends to lend itself heavily to these kind of things. One standout example is the fic ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3742061/1/The-Mystery-Machine The Mystery Machine]]'', where Mystery Inc, having grown up and [[BreakingTheFellowship gone their separate ways]], meet again when Fred finds the Mystery Machine, which is now nothing more than a rusting heap of metal in a dump. Daphne and Fred were married, but then divorced, Shaggy is a homeless bum who makes his home in the aforementioned Mystery Machine and [[spoiler: Scooby is dead]]. Shaggy tries PuttingTheBandBackTogether, but Daphne coldly tells him that they can't and that NothingIsTheSameAnymore. It ends with Fred leaving a bawling Shaggy in the Mystery Machine.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}}'' (and by extension ''WesternAnimation/AllGrownUp'') fans have "[[WebOriginal/TheRugratsTheory The Rugrats Theory]]". As the name implies it's a theory however it [[FandomSpecificPlot spawned a lot of fanworks]]. As the story goes, the entire series is a product of a delusional Angelica and everyone is DeadAllAlong. Chuckie died with his mother, Tommy was born stillborn, and the twins were aborted. Fans differ but Dil is often depicted as the only living character; Kimi and Susie are [[FanonDiscontinuity ignored]]. The "theory" was never supposed to be serious and is just an interesting DarkFic [=AU=].
* ''WesternAnimation/RainbowBrite'' has quite a few as it's a surprisingly dark MagicalGirl cartoon. ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2618635/1/The-Rainbow-Connection The Rainbow Connection]]'' has Wisp running away after a traumatic event, growing up into an adult, and [[spoiler:Stormy]] going on a graphic murder spree.
* Dark ''WesternAnimation/{{Jem}}'' fanfics tend to lean on two sides: DeconstructionFic or normal DarkFic. The former often has Jerrica being portrayed as a BitchInSheepsClothing who toys with her boyfriend's heart and takes being Jem so seriously it tears the band apart. The latter lean towards being Misfits fics that deal with their {{Dark And Troubled Past}}s, DaddyIssues, and in general rougher topics that the cartoon ever did. In fact the [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/255035/1/A-Peace-of-the-Bands first]] ''Jem'' fanfic on Website/FanFictionDotNet was a dark fic where [[spoiler:Roxy]] drowns.
* ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5814421/1/Believing-In-Magic Believing In Magic]]'' deconstructs the topic of the ''WesternAnimation/BluesClues'' and deals with Joe growing up. It's a subtle, realistic take on the series and it delves into the fact most of the characters in the series aren't real, or don't appear to be to most. It's one of the few serious fics for the series.
* ''WesternAnimation/MakingFiends'' is a dark cartoon so naturally this occurs. ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8404380/1/Paint-it-Green-Blue-Black Paint It Green, Blue, Black]]'' is a horror fic that gives us a backstory about Charlotte: her parents were murdered [[HarmfulToMinors in front of her]] and she [[RepressedMemories repressed the memories]]. Charlotte undergoes a SanitySlippage after remembering this [[spoiler:and murders her grandmother]]. Vendetta is presented as a JerkWithAHeartOfJerk who doesn't have any issue with murder and it contains some romance between the two.
* The ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'' fandom is full of fanfics that are [[TrollFic intentionally 'mature' and offensive]] however some are unironic but handle issues above the target audiences level. ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3508375/1/How-To-Break-A-Family How To Break A Family]]'' involves D.W. being kidnapped. It gets [[FromBadToWorse worse from there]]. Thora dies of a heart-attack after hearing the news, Mrs. Read and Mr. Read divorce after the kidnapping, Arthur and Kate grow up dysfunctional, and there is a lot of violence. Other fics [[VerySpecialEpisode emulate]] the series and deal with rough but still age-appropriate topics.
* The ''FanFic/MoreThanMyFriend'' series of ''WesternAnimation/FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends'' fanfic is light on darkness compared to other fanfics but is still dark in its own right, especially when compared to the source. The spinoff material is more fluffy. The first fic is about Mac being abused by his BigBrotherBully and forced to buy drugs for him. The second [[SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome begins with]] his brother and mother dying in an accident, Mac being sent to an orphanage, and Frankie deciding to take him in.
* The fan-artist Twisted-Wind has many dark and often bloody artworks of WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse and WesternAnimation/OswaldTheLuckyRabbit. Most of their comics are this as well (such as their SteamPunk AU or their ''Literature/{{Dracula}}'' AU
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse'':
** ''The Loud Comic'', or ''I Love My Brother'' is a fan comic revolving around Luan Loud, a psychopathic {{Yandere}} who is introduced violently murdering Ronnie Anne as to get rid of any potential rivals to her brother's affections, later finding out that Lynn is another rival and having a meltdown over it.
** ''Fanfic/RequiemForALoud'' is a very popular ''Loud Family'' fanfic where Lincoln gets diagnosed with a terminal illness and is given only a few weeks to live. Its popularity has [[FollowTheLeader inspired several similar stories]].
** ''Make It Wit Chu'', a fanfic that's about Lincoln being ''raped'' by his elder sisters.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThomasTheTankEngine'':
** ''Webvideo/Shed17'' is a Mockumentary detailing the truth about ''WesternAnimation/ThomasTheTankEngine'', specifically that all the talking trains are the result of [[StupidJetpackHitler horrific Nazi science]] that fuses human biology with machines with very mixed and often bloody results.
** ''[[http://danbooru.donmai.us/pools/11741 Pilots of Sodor]]'' takes the trains (though with a bit of AnthropomorphicPersonification) and puts them in a post-apocalyptic wasteland fighting for their lives in mecha based off their original selves. It also throws in some dark {{Mythology Gag}}s to the source: You know how Henry gets trapped behind a tunnel wall because he doesn't want to leave? Here, he's trapped in a room because he ''killed half the staff'' during a battle.

[[folder:"Official" Examples]]
Examples that have actually been professionally released, for money:

* To begin, let's get the ElephantInTheLivingRoom out of the way: A ''lot'' of {{doujinshi}} (which can be considered drawn fanfic) do this, both {{hentai}} and non-hentai. Steer clear especially of the hentai ones if your tolerance level for your favorite characters being raped is in any way low, as that's one of the ''least'' horrible things that'll happen to them.
* But even among R-rated {{Doujinshi}}, artist Takotsuboya's works ''really'' push the darkness slider up to eleven. It's so messed up the sex is just a ''distraction'' from how incredibly dark things are getting. Be warned: any of these may send you into a depressing funk for quite some time.
** ''Manga/KOn'': The ''Takotsuboya K-ON Trilogy'', one of the more infamous works.
** ''LightNovel/{{Oreimo}}'': The siblings' personalities took a dark and twisted turn, and things get progressively worse with every page from there. Have fun!
** ''Anime/GirlsUndPanzer'': When you were watching the anime, did you ever think "this series is pretty cute, but it would be a lot better with more gore, PTSD, and war crimes"? No? Well ''somebody'' did.
** ''VideoGame/KantaiCollection'': The artist's most recent work. Imagine all the ship girls in a World War II setting. Now remember that most of the ship girls are from Japanese naval ships in World War II. Now, [[KillEmAll what was the fate of most of Japanese naval power in the war?]]
* ''Creator/ArchieComics'':
** ''ComicBook/{{Archie|Comics}}'' and ''ComicBook/ThePunisher'' met halfway in their unlikely [[ComicBook/ArchieMeetsThePunisher 1994 crossover]] in which The Punisher tracked an Archie lookalike to Riverdale with orders to apprehend rather than kill him. The original pitch involved Archie hiring The Punisher to kill a psychopath who murdered his entire family, but this was considered [[CerebusSyndrome too dark]].
** The above didn't stop them from coming up with ''ComicBook/AfterlifeWithArchie'' more than a decade later, which basically asks the question: "How would Riverdale handle a zombie apocalypse?" The answer is much, ''much'' darker than you'd think.
** Archie has since created an entire line of ''Archie'' horror series, such as ''ComicBook/ArchieVsPredator'' and ''ComicBook/ChillingAdventuresOfSabrina''.
* ''ComicBook/ArchieComicsSonicTheHedgehog'' crossed over with, of all characters, ''ComicBook/{{Spawn}}''. Naturally the latter was toned down in keeping with the former's (mostly) kid-friendly atmosphere, but still...
* The original ''Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland'' is so full of possibilities that it has spawned quite a few "legitimate" examples in modern times, the most notable being:
** The live-action [[Film/AliceInWonderland2010 Tim Burton movie]]
** The twisted stopmotion {{Film/Alice}} by Creator/JanSvankmajer.
** The video game series ''VideoGame/AmericanMcGeesAlice''.
** Dark fanfics and fan art abound staring Dodgson's heroine, [[RuleThirtyFour many of them of a more mature nature]] with a [[SheIsAllGrownUp teenage or adult]], HotterAndSexier {{Xenafication}} of Alice.
* The point of the ''Literature/{{Wicked}}'' series, applying this trope to ''Literature/TheWonderfulWizardOfOz''. It's a book series based on both the MGM film and original ''Oz'' books. Within the first section alone there is Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) being a ChildByRape, heavy religious themes, attempted baby murder, and several rather graphically described sexual scenes. That's not even getting into Elphaba's adulthood. ''Wicked'' is full of politics, violence, sex, and all sorts of other dark issues. The [[Theatre/{{Wicked}} musical]] is more family-friendly but is still dark fic material compared to the original ''Oz'' books.
* The play ''Theatre/DogSeesGod'' is something like the above ''Peanuts'' fic "High School", [[spoiler:though it gives Charlie Brown an EarnYourHappyEnding conclusion.]]
* Arguably, ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords'' was one for the entire ''Franchise/StarWars'' franchise, and one of the few dark fics to be an official part of the series.
* ''Literature/AFrozenHeart'' is a licensed book based off of ''Disney/{{Frozen}}''. As dark as the original ''Frozen'' is, the book is aimed at teenage and adult fans and thus is allowed more wiggle room. While not ''that'' dark, it does allude to Hans having SelfHarm issues and goes into depth on his abusive childhood.
