We sincerely hope you weren't planning on sleeping anytime soon. Creepypasta is a collection of [[NightmareFuel creepy, frightening, and/or utterly terrifying]] stories that originated from and still are floating around the internet. The name itself is a portmanteau of "copypasta", a term for pieces of text — most commonly long-form jokes — that are commonly copied and pasted throughout the internet, and "creepy". They can range anywhere from [[GhostStory ghost stories]] or [[MindScrew mind-bending]] [[SurrealHorror tales of terror]], to [[TheSlenderManMythos stories about slim businessmen]].

There are several common traits among them:
* A lack of disclaimer from their authors stating the work is fiction, which may cause the lines of reality and fantasy [[ParanoiaFuel to blend]]. Often, real or well faked place names, character names, or website names are used. [[note]](Here, "well faked" is defined as requiring an average person to do research to discover fictionality.)[[/note]]
* [[FirstPersonPerspective A first person perspective is used.]] This is done easily in text-based pastas, but can be accomplished in video-based pastas through [[FoundFootageFilms "found footage"]] camerawork and storyline.
* [[SurrealHorror Creepy or surreal imagery.]]
* The transformation of something from wholesome to perverse. Things that were once considered fun and entertaining are found to have a mysterious, dark underbelly. For example, [[DeadBart a lost episode of a children's television program found to contain a bizarre or frightening narrative]], a haunted amusement park, [[BenDrowned an obscure or haunted videogame]], etc.
* [[NothingIsScarier A fear of the unknown.]] This is where Creepypasta takes a page out of HPLovecraft's writings — Creepypastas almost always include supernatural malevolent entities, but almost never are they vampires, demons, or witches. Rather, it is an "it", [[TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow a force that humans have no understanding of]]. Perhaps one of the most popular (and one of the few named) examples is [[TheSlenderManMythos Slenderman]].

[[SchmuckBait Archives where they can be found]] are [[http://www.creepypasta.com/ here,]] [[http://creepypasta.tumblr.com/ here,]] [[http://inuscreepystuff.blogspot.com here,]] [[http://www.creepypastaindex.com/ here,]] and [[http://terrortortellini.blogspot.com here.]] There's also [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Creepypasta_Wiki a Wiki for Creepypastas]] and [[http://terrortortellini.freeforums.org a forum for the Creepypasta community.]] Can be found in illustrated form [[http://www.youtube.com/user/TheHolderOfTales here.]]

[[RightBehindMe Just don't look behind you, 'kay?]] Often the subjects of [[AlternateRealityGame ARGs]], because audience participation can add whole new levels of NightmareFuel. Sometimes, these may actually have a decent ending.

Not to be confused with [[FlyingSpaghettiMonster pasta that may be creepy]].

* [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com/The Zeddicker Casefiles]]: a serial blog that seems fairly new but is updated regularly. It combines the HardboiledDetective genre with dark fantasy. Not as nightmare inducing as some of the other links here, but it's really meant to be a paranormal detective story. That said, some elements of NightmareFuel are scattered throughout.

Creepypasta has also been subject to [[DramaticReading dramatic readings]] by a online group called ''WebVideo/TheMidnightSociety'' that post their work on YouTube. Of them, the most prominent member is [[http://www.youtube.com/user/MrCreepyPasta/videos MrCreepyPasta]]. He has a list of links to the others members' YouTube channels on his own. !!Creepypastas contain examples of:
* AbandonedArea: {{Abandoned hospital}}s, {{abandoned playground}}s, {{abandoned warehouse}}s, and {{haunted house}}s are the common ones amongst the ''abandoned areas'' selection.
* AbusiveParents: May be the source of some revenge-story Creepypasta.
* AdultsAreUseless: Adults may not be able to help...
* AdultFear: One ''Sims'' creepypasta describes the clown coming up to the house and kidnapping the player's Sim Children.
** [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com Zeddicker]] starts off in his first novella trying to track down a missing teenage girl.
** This is actually quite common in Sims Creepypastas:
*** Your Friend features a Sim family being burned alive while one of the parents is out.
*** Sim Albert has this as well.
* AGodAmI: Sonic.exe's line of "I AM GOD" implies that he at least thinks this applies. Whether it actually does or not is hard to tell.
* AlienGeometries: Common, considering that a lot of 'pastas are meant to be in the MindScrew-y nature.
* AllHallowsEve: These can and do take place at ''any'' time of the year, but God help any unfortunate soul who is the main character of one that does take place as Halloween, considering how potent some of the horrors in these are ''at regular times of the year.''
* AllInTheEyes: Often crosses over with [[RedEyesTakeWarning red or black eyes take warning]].
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Slenderman gets this a lot, due to his ambiguous nature.
* AlternateRealityGame: Many Creepypastas with engaging AudienceParticipation evolve into [=ARGs=]. WebVideo/BenDrowned and TheSlenderManMythos are notable examples.
* AluminumChristmasTrees: A surprising amount of creepypastas have their entire story based on things that are actually ''real''! Some examples include ''Hello Kitty Murders'', ''Rap Rat'', and many lost episodes. [[note]]Granted, most lost episodes won't involve the characters being killed or raped, like the creepypastas, but they do exist.[[/note]]
* AlwaysNight: A few, but mostly subverted as a lot of the horrors of these stories usually don't even bother [[DaylightHorror waiting for night]] to come out.
* AndIMustScream: How more than a few of these end.
* AnonymousAuthor
* ApocalypticLog: '''Oh, yes.'''
* AscendedMeme: Sometimes the update notes for ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'' will have "Removed Herobrine" in the list somewhere. FridgeHorror kicks in when you realize that he's been "removed" well over a dozen times by now, which means [[NotQuiteDead he keeps finding a way back in]].
** The ''SpongebobSquarepants'' episode "Are You Happy Now?" is said to have been based off of "Squidward's Suicide".
* AssholeVictim: The 3 bullies in Jeff The Killer.
** Cicci in [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com No Pity for the Dead]].
** In [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Cell_Phone_Game The Cell Phone Game]] the narrater's girlfriend, Stephanie, twice attempts to displace her curse onto [[ThoseWackyNazis the school Neo-Nazi]], with this trope as her justification. [[spoiler: Stephanie herself ultimately becomes this after she is dragged away, since she'd [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope jumped off the slippery slope]] by that point.]]
* AudienceParticipation: Some of the best ones add new levels of scary by hinging the ultimate fate of the main character by how much help the audience at home are. You fail, TheHeroDies. For that matter, [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou the viewers might be]] [[ParanoiaFuel next.]] One less serious creepypasta actually was ''based'' around this, where the object of it was to add new paragraphs.
* BeingWatched: It wouldn't be one of these if this didn't happen every other 'pasta.
* BittersweetEnding: While most creepypastas end with a DownerEnding or NoEnding, ''Pokemon: Lost Silver'' ([[WildMassGuessing presumably]]) ends with the protagonist coming to terms with his death, after having a successful career as a Pokemon champion. Even then, this can still be taken as a downer from a [[StrawNihilist nihilist]] point of view, that his success will eventually be erased after his death.
** Lost Silver: Hidden, however, shows that there may be something much more sinister going on.
* BizarreAlienBiology: Certain monsters display this.
** Jeffs from the Worm Jeff Saga have a gland that produces a powerful acid located near the stomach, and Drone Leaders have this replaced with an organ filled with what is essentially lighter fluid, which they ignite using a "flint" in their mouths to spit huge fireballs.
* TheBlank: [[TheSlenderManMythos That goes without saying...]]
* BloodFromTheMouth: So common that on the wiki, it's considered a cliche.
* BodyHorror: In all their utterly terrifying glory.
** Of note are the inhabitants of [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-house-that-death-forgot.html Granny Royce's Road House]]. [[spoiler: None of them can die, despite them all having been slaughtered in various horrific ways. One of them was a pregnant woman with a permanent cut-open womb and a ''living zombie baby inside her''.]]
** Also is [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Pocket_by_ManufacturerINC The Pocket]], [[spoiler: where a guy's best friend, and later, his wife get eaten by what appears to be a [[Franchise/DeadSpace Necromorph]] {{Expy}}]], and [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Eyeless_Jack Eyeless Jack]], [[spoiler: where the protagonist gets [[OrganTheft his organs stolen]] and [[ImAHumanitarian eaten]] by a HumanoidAbomination]]. [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Unbranded_Laptop Unbranded Laptop]] has [[spoiler: a kid dismember herself with a hacksaw.]]
** Certain scenes in [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com No Pity for the Dead]] involve this.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: See AudienceParticipation.
** The whole point of [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/03/they-are-watching-me-and-now-they-are.html They Are Watching Me. And Now They Are Watching You]]. It's written like a story, but it begins with the narrator telling you that he is praying that no one reads this, and ends with him [[spoiler: apologizing to you that you read it, and that as a result, if you ''stop'' reading it, the creatures in the story will come after you]].
* BroughtDownToNormal: In "The Worm In Paradise", [[spoiler: Slenderman is temporarily stripped of most of his powers and is forced to rely on his wits (and tentacles.)]]
* BrownNote: Several involve ''something'', be it a video, picture, music, etc, that causes people to go insane, or worse.
* ButNowIMustGo:
** [[spoiler: "Love" and "Sim Albert" feature these as the TwistEnding]].
** [[spoiler: Howard]] near the end of ''They Are Watching Me. And Now They Are Watching You''.
* ClicheStorm: An interesting example - the Creepypasta Wiki even has [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Creepy_Cliches a list]] of "Creepy Cliches". (seeing these cliches in a story is generally considered to be a sign of a poorly-made creepypasta.)
** Played straight in [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com The Zeddicker Casefiles]], which purposefully try to evoke PhilipMarlowe or SamSpade, right down to the PrivateEyeMonologue.
* ClippedWingAngel: Drone Jeffs in The Worm Jeff Saga. Though that's little comfort when [[ZergRush dozens of them]] of them are slashing at you with thier claws and eating your flesh!
* CreepyBasement: And make sure to keep it locked up tight.
* CreepyChangingPainting: In ''Vile Design''.
* CreepyChild: Frequent.
* CreepyDoll: ''"Lucy wants to play with you, '''forever and ever..."''''' Heck, so many CreepyDoll pictures were added onto the wiki that they said "NO MORE DOLLS".
** In the original story, completing Sonic.exe caused the entity to materialize right behind you as this.
* CreepyGood: Occasionally.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Well, these have to scare you somehow.
** ''Very'' prominent example in ''The House That Death Forgot'': [[spoiler: ''He'' will kill you in a variety of painful ways, but even though you're dead, you stay conscious, mobile...and ''your mortal wounds will continue to cause you pain''. And if those wounds are visible, you pretty much stay out of sight to avoid horrifying people.]]
* CrustyCaretaker: If you suspect you are, in fact, the star of a creepypasta. Listen to these guys when they tell you not to go into the [[AbandonedWarehouse abandoned warehouse]].
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: See YouthIsWastedOnTheDumb.
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Love "Love"]] - a girl finds a note addressed to her on her computer, describing all the paranormal activity and shadows she's seen her entire life. [[spoiler:It was a soldier who made a promise to her dad, shortly before they were both killed in war, to look after his soon-to-be-born daughter. Since the daughter turned 18, he decided [[ButNowIMustGo his work was done]] and to give her some closure on the weirdness.]]
** [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com Zeddicker]] describes himself as "somewhere between" the angels and demons in his town.
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Willow_Men The Willow Men]] has a bunch of otherwordly, [[{{Expy}} Slenderman-esque]] creatures that whisk their victims away and horribly torture them until they die. However, since they only do this to people who have committed horrible crimes — such as the protagonist, who murdered his wife — they come across as {{Well Intentioned Extremist}}s at worst.
* DarkWorld: Where a lot of the central characters end up before the end of the tale.
* DeadlyEuphemism: "GO TO SLEEP"
** If you fail any of the "[[UnusualEuphemism games]]" in ''How To Play Alone'', you '''''fail'''''...
* DeadlyHug: The turn-into-a-monster variant (often accompanied by a BedmateReveal) is popular.
* DeadlyPrank: The backstory for a few of these.
* DeathByMocking: If the hero character is especially dumb.
* DefangedHorrors: Averted. Don't expect the hero(es) to get off that easy.
* {{Defictionalization}}: Many video game Creepypastas have been made into actual games or [[GameMod mods]]. Highlights include Creepy Black, Sonic.exe, Herobrine...
* {{Demonic Possession}}: A person, animal, or inanimate object may end up being controlled by an evil spirit... and causing great havoc.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: In ''Russian Sleep Experiment'', a group of test subjects deprived of sleep slowly go insane, performing gruesome self-mutilation and cannibalism. [[spoiler:At the end, only one is left alive, and a researcher is locked in a hospital room with him. When the panicked researcher asks the subject what he is, he gives a SlasherSmile and says that he has essentially become the embodiment of all the fears humans have while awake. The researcher stares in horror... [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome then promptly draws his sidearm and]] ''[[MugglesDoItBetter blows that son-of-a-bitch's lungs out.]]'']]
** What does Zeddicker do when confronted with a demonic being? Pull out his gat and start shooting. [[spoiler:It doesn't do much good, though.]]
* DirtyCop: The Sheriff in ''[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Texas_Blood Texas Blood]]''
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: A few creepypastas sound like they could possibly be sexual assault.
* DontGoInTheWoods: Averted. Staying out of the woods won't save you.
* DracoInLeatherPants: '''JEFF''', to the point that most stories about him are written by fangirls.
* DrivenToMadness: But of course.
* DrivenToSuicide: Though [[AndIMustScream that doesn't always work...]]
* EasterEgg: The subject of many video game Creepypastas...
* EldritchAbomination: Z̵͍̖̹̹̈ͣ̒̅̅LA̸͙̜̝̟̜̲͛ͅL̢̧͈͉̯͙͆ͧ͘G̢̬̣͌̿ͮ̍̿ͦ͗̚͠O̫̾́ͩͫͤ͛̉̔́ͣͧ͐́̚҉̫̘͎̪̟͠ͅEC̡̨̺̻͕͔̼͉̺̑ͥͅO͎͇̞̹̮̭̱ͭ́͑̀͋ͪM̴̖̩͖͓̪̐̍ͯͬ͐E̴̪̯͙̜͚̝̋ͮ͊ͩ̏KUT̳̮̂͊EͯH̶̛͉̞͉͕̩̻̽̃̀
** MissingNo. He corrupts the world, can delete your Hall of Fame records, and is always shifting.
** Whatever Probst has let through the barrier into our world in [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com No Pity for the Dead]].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Jeff, the mass murdering psychopath who's entire life revolves around making living things dead [[spoiler:lets a little baby live when he encounters it in the crib. Saying that he'll get to him when he's seen more of the world. Until then, he tells the baby to go to sleep and hands it its teddy bear. Then leaves.]]
* [[EvilPhone Evil Everything]]: Evil mirrors, evil bums, evil houses, evil video games, evil cars, evil dolls, evil children, '''[[EverythingTryingToKillYou everything is out to get you]] in these stories.'''
* {{Expy}}: [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Jeff_The_Killer Jeff the Killer]] is basically The Joker with an origin story and a heaping helping of UncannyValley. He's even got two joker origins incorporated into his, with the chemical alteration of his face and a GlasgowGrin carved into it.
** Speaking of Jeff, Worm Jeff is this for the Jason parasite from Jason Goes To Hell. However, as the author explains on the Website/DeviantART copy of Evil Never Dies, this was unintentional as she had never seen the film until she had other people look at it on Creepypasta Wiki chat and someone pointed out the similarities between it and Worm Jeff's life cycle. In addition, There's another nod to the Joker in the "mythos", as the substance secreted by Worm Jeff's stinger that slowly turns victims into Jeff The Killer or mutants that resemble him is called "venom", after Joker Venom, which it was clearly inspired by.
** Jeff now has his own army of expies, enough to make the Creepypasta Wiki ban the so called "Jeff Formula".
* EyeScream:
** Expect a few eyes to be poked out. [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-house-that-death-forgot.html Melinda]] [[spoiler: stays alive after having her eye stabbed and her brain punctured...''and has to live with the pain of that for all eternity''.]]
** Sonic.exe's eyes bleed constantly.
*** And when he gets to Sally in the sequel, her eyelids get sewn shut.
* FatalFlaw: Many creepypastas have one that renders them laughable if you know what to look for.
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Some ritual genred creepypastas fall into this. ''How To Play Alone'' seems to avert this. Except chapter 06 "Lose", [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin in which you will lose no matter what, if you start the game]].
* FanworkBan: There's a [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Furbearingbrick/No_More_Spinoffs:_Desperate_Struggle long list]] of pastas you are no longer allowed to make spinoffs or fanquels of on Creepypasta Wiki. The reason for this? For a long time people were posting nothing BUT spinoffs, and very few original pastas were being written. There's a loophole in this, however: you can post the story elsewhere and link to it on your user page, or use Spinoff Appeal to have the admins review it and add it to the wiki if it "passes." Furbearingbrick, the admin who decreed the no-spinoffs rule, said this about Evil Never Dies (which was written shortly after the ban was enacted): [[HypocrisyNod "I AM AWARE OF THE IRONY."]] Recently subverted with the creation of the [[http://creepypastaspinoff.wikia.com Creepypasta Spinoff Wiki]] and [[http://spinpasta.wikia.com Spinpasta Wiki]], two wikis where you can post spinoffs.
* FightingAShadow: In the Worm Jeff Saga, even if you DO manage to kill Jeff The Killer, he'll just escape the corpse of his host and find a new body to possess. This happens so often, in fact, that Jeff has ''weaponized'' this concept, medling the corpses of former hosts together into huge, organic "tanks" called Jeff Crawlers. Also, in "Please Follow Me", it's revealed that he keeps a literal ''horde'' of former hosts, which live in a cave under the city! Oh, and [[OhCrap they're breeding.]]
* [[FinalGirl Only Person]]: The main characters are often the only human characters of any significance in these.
* FollowTheLeader: Count how many HauntedTechnology pastas came after WebVideo/BenDrowned.
** This trope used to be such a problem with Jeff The Killer (too many pastas were just the original Jeff story with the SerialNumbersFiledOff, to the point where Jeff became an OverusedCopycatCharacter) that "Jeff-inspired" stories were banned on Creepypasta Wiki.
** Jeff's not the only one. This trope is such a problem that Pokepastas, Lost Episode stories ''and'' Slenderman stories have all been banned from the wiki.
* FoodChainOfEvil: ''The Horrors hunger...''
* FourthWallObserver: [[WebVideo/BenDrowned You shouldn't have done that.]] No, really. You shouldn't have.
* TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou: No, no it will not.
** If you stop reading [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/03/they-are-watching-me-and-now-they-are.html They Are Watching Me. And Now They Are Watching You]] after you've finished it... ''They'' will come for you. Go back to the top and read it again. Don't stop.
* FreakLabAccident: How more than a few of these came into existence.
* FridgeHorror: There are some creepypastas that in themselves may not be as scary; but when you see it...
** Others conclude with the protagonist realizing that something mundane actually means something is very wrong indeed. For example, ''[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Barbie.avi Barbie.AVI]]'' concludes with the protagonist wondering why an abandoned house still has the plumbing hooked up, and ''[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Basement The Basement]]'' ends with the protagonist discovering a footprint outside his back door, meaning someone else entered the house to watch his neighbor die.
* GenreSavvy: The gravedigger from ''[[http://www.creepypastaindex.com/creepypasta/sarah-o-bannon Sarah O'Bannon]]''.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: With the popularity of MagicalRealism in Latin America, it's not difficult to come across creepypastas in Spanish or Portuguese, or readings of them.
* GhostlyChill: Whether or not they're actually ghosts sometimes doesn't matter. No matter the Horror, the main character will probably experience this at some point.
* GloriousMotherRussia: Is MemeticMutation on capitalist internet to rewriting creepypasta as if taking place in Soviet Russia. Thick and heavy FunetikAksent is spelling in text, and GratuitousRussian using sometimes. Result of tales is often change, as true Soviets able to endure much more grueling punishment than weak American dogs. Vodka is much present, and many things - bodies, important papers, sometimes even ArtifactOfDoom itself - burned for warmth without second thought. Such is life in Moscow. Some of there provide ample NightmareRetardant.
** One example of disgusting American pasta [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Bad_Dream here]] and its glorious Russian version [[https://encyclopediadramatica.se/Creepypasta/Russia_spoofs#Devochkamoya_Bad_Dream here]] (Encyclopedia Dramatica may not safe to open in capitalist workplace. You need '''real''' job ploughing fields, is only solution).
* {{Gorn}}: Some pasta writers just plain don't do subtlety.
* GuardianEntity / GuardianAngel: Sometimes, a few Creepypastas may play with these tropes and have it be revealed that the paranormal activity is actually them. [[spoiler: Best examples are in "Love", in which the paranormal activity is revealed as a GuardianAngel, and "The Man in the Purple Shirt" where the titular title is actually a GuardianEntity against a HumanoidAbomination.]]
* HauntedHeroine: Somewhat subverted, as Creepypastas don't tend to favor either sex. Just say ''Haunted Person''.
** Howard and Samuel the narrator could both qualify in ''They Are Watching Me. And Now They Are Watching You.''
* HauntedTechnology: [[WebVideo/BenDrowned ''You've met a terrible fate, haven't you?'']]
* HellHotel: '''Yes.'''
* HiddenElfVillage: A sinister version of this occurs in "Please Follow Me".
* {{Hipster}}: [[http://www.trollpasta.wikia.com/Broseph.doc Broseph]] seems to fit.
* HiveMind
** Zͦ̏̍͊͏̺̮A̩̙̫̳̥̹͐̾͌ͭ̀L͊͑҉̪̬͍͉̬̟G̴O͍͖̪̼͋̈ͮ͒̋
** A rather literal example in the Worm Jeff Saga with the Drones.
* HumanoidAbomination: The most common one of all.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: More like ''hunting a member of a species who just thought they were the most dangerous game.''
* IAmNotShazam: Worm Jeff is just a nickname given by the author to the mind-controlling parasitic antagonist, to avoid confusion with his hosts (which are also called Jeffs) and the "canon" Jeff. Everyone in-universe calls him Jeff, Jeff The Killer, or Master.
* ImAHumanitarian: Nice knowing you...
* IndianBurialGround: A few, but really, just about ''any'' kind of burial ground can be enough to set off the events of these.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Possibly either how the horror started out, or what the protagonist will experience by the end.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: [[http://mrprinceawesomeness.deviantart.com/art/Jeff-the-Killer-rewritten-350058609 This]] alternate take on the original Jeff The Killer story recasts Jeff as one of these.
* IronicNurseryTune: Just pray they aren't reading ''Ring Around The Rosies''.
** [[{{WebOriginal/TheSkinDaddy}} Hum, hum, hum a little tune...]]
* ItCanThink: And usually more intelligent than whoever it's tormenting.
* ItWontTurnOff: Part of the time, but turning it on to begin with was probably enough to render whether it was on or off in the first place moot.
* LifeOrLimbDecision: Literally.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Sally, at least on Website/DeviantArt, gets a lot of this.
* LightningCanDoAnything: Played with in "One Door Closes, Another One Opens." Jeff was transformed into Worm Jeff by being struck by ball lightning [[spoiler: as he was dying]], but it is strongly implied that it may not have been lightning at all.
* TheLittleShopThatWasntThereYesterday: Be GenreSavvy not to shop there. One example of this that pulls it off rather well is [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/WWF:_Cancelled_in_Your_House_PPV WWF: Cancelled In Your House PPV]].
* TheManBehindTheCurtain: The aptly titled [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Lost_Episodes "Lost Episodes"]] reveals all "haunted" lost episodes may have been created by a [[spoiler: a mentally dysfunctional social outcast]].
** There is likely someone, or something, that has taken notice of Zeddicker and is sending all its agents to him.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: Some creepypasta are totally ambiguous as to whether it's supernatural or not.
** Perfect examples of this are the Franchise/{{Pokemon}} creepypasta Ghost Black and Lost Silver, which are simply the author describing what appear to be nothing more than very morbid ''Pokémon'' rom hacks that were written to cartridges. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise and nothing strange happens to the author of either other than them being incredibly freaked out about it. Supernatural possibilities come from wondering who in the world would do this and why. (On top of the fact that hacking the games to such an extent has only recently become possible)
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Helen "Helen"]]: The narrator finds his grandfather acting bizarrely in his new apartment, claiming someone named "Helen" is taking over rooms and making threats. Turns out some computer virus has been downloading obscene material and relaying threatening messages through a Bonzi BUDDY called "Helen," and with the computer gone the grandfather starts getting better. The narrator still thinks it's weird that there's no documentation of the virus online.
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Toadman "The Toadman"]]: The narrator is an elderly man who recalls an event in his past involving a being called the Toadman. It's left ambiguous whether or not the Toadman is supernatural.
* MarkOfTheBeast: The [[http://laserpotato.deviantart.com/#/d5pwf97 Mark Of Jeff.]]
* MetaOrigin: ''[[http://www.slimebeast.com/stories/lost_episodes.php Lost Episodes]]'' is meant to be one for the "Missing Episodes" sub-genre of Pasta that sprang up after Suicide Mouse and Candle Cove.
* {{Minimalism}}: Most, if not all, creepypastas are a tale of a one or two (three, tops) human characters and a single monster in usually one location. Many [[TheSlenderManMythos Slender-blogs and Vlogs]] avert this. Most notably, EverymanHYBRID has LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters. On top of that, the most popular blogs tend to acknowledge each other's existence and even have characters interact with each other, effectively turning them into a MassivelyMultiplayerCrossover and creating the closest thing to a canon the mythos has.
* MissingEpisode: Lots of creepypastas concern missing episodes.
** This trope is so prolific that there's a pasta, known appropriately enough as [[http://www.slimebeast.com/stories/lost_episodes.php ''Lost Episodes'']], which tries to provide a MetaOrigin for such [[MissingEpisode Missing Episodes]].
* MonsterClown: Bubby and Stubb.
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Extra_Ketchup Apparently monster clowns run a burger joint now]].
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: A common characteristic of the antagonists in these stories.
** Mr. Widemouth.
** Jeff The Killer.
** Worm Jeff is described as having lots of little shark-like teeth.
** In Please Follow Me, Pedro is described has having teeth like "a mouthful of knitting needles." Ditto for the transformed Jack in "Trust Me, Part 2".
* TheMostDangerousVideoGame: Just ask Ben.
* MundaneGhostStory: Perhaps most terrifying of all, some of these stories use completely plausible set-ups and even twist endings. ''[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Texas_Blood Texas Blood]]'', for instance, reads less like a straight-up horror story and more like an excerpt from a particularly dark & gritty cop/thriller novel.
** ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nukoTQyeYz4 Belle Plaine, 1965]]'' highlights the terrible fact that, despite the common assumption that [[spoiler: parents will always know their child]], [[AdultFear it sometimes simply isn't true]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Frequently, as a source of PsychologicalHorror. Even when it isn't outright stated, the protagonist usually has some role in allowing some horror or other to spread/escape.
* NightmareFace: Many, especially Jeff the Killer's.
** Sonic.exe has bleeding, black eyes with red pupils and quite possibly the most sadistic grin ever seen.
** And then there's Smile Dog, Mr. Widemouth, the Suicide Mouse image... Creepypastas are FILLED with these.
* NightmareFuel AND HOW!
* NoFourthWall: [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou Sometimes the fourth wall is not enough]]. Other times, it isn't even there at all...
** [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/03/they-are-watching-me-and-now-they-are.html They will come for you. They will remove you. And then... and then...]]
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: "Love", mentioned above, is about one of these. Unlike most though, he's not evil at all, though he gets ''scary'' when he's pissed.
* NothingIsScarier: The very backbone a lot of these are built on.
* NotUsingTheZWord: Averted. If the Horror of the story is a old chestnut monster, the protagonists are usually quick to identify them by name.
* OffscreenTeleportation: The Horror present is often capable of this.
* OhCrap: Word on the Creepypasta grape vine is that the creators of SMILE.jpg and Suicide Mouse.avi worked together on a little project called "[=BarelyBreathing=].exe"
** "And if you EVER come across a file name [=BarelyBreathing=].exe... for God's sake, [[ShmuckBait DON'T OPEN IT.]]"
* OnceIsNotEnough: Protagonists are usually GenreSavvy enough to realize this, but that doesn't normally save them.
* OneCurseLimit: Worm Jeff's mind-link keeps his infectees from falling prey to mind manipulation from other Creepypasta entities. This has only been demonstrated to be true with Slenderman so far, but that alone should let you know how untouchably powerful Worm Jeff's mind control is.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Anytime someone starts acting unusual, run.
* OrganTheft: Keep a close eyes on your liver, mate.
* OrificeInvasion: Yes, given that most of the Horrors are [[PersonalSpaceInvader personal space violators]].
* OuterLimitsTwist: Expect this to pop up a lot.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The Broken Glass Beast, from "A Touch Of Glass." A magical construct made of multicolored broken glass is certaintly not the first thing that comes to mind when you imagine bloodsuckers.
* PaedoHunt: "[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Salt_House Salt House]]"
* PainfulTransformation: Jack's agonizing transformation into a Drone Jeff in "Trust Me, Part 2"
** It sure sounds like [[spoiler: Cicci's transformation hurts.]]
* ParanoiaFuel: Oodles and oodles of it!
** If you read [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/03/they-are-watching-me-and-now-they-are.html They Are Watching Me. And Now They are Watching You]] in the dark, or if a shadow shifts while you read it... *shudder*
** Is there broken glass on your floor, with shards whose colors don't match those of the object that was broken? The [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/A_Touch_of_Glass Broken Glass Beast]] could literally be out for your blood.
** [[http://trollpasta.wikia.com/wiki/Broseph.doc Broseph.doc]], if you value cheese puffs or have an abnormal fear of hipsters.
** Ever mouthed the words while you read? Had a song or part of a song in your head and couldn't get rid of it? Shake your leg while you sit? Talk in your sleep? [[https://zeddicker.blogspot.com You are probably possessed]].
* PersonalHorror: All the time.
* PsychologicalHorror: The very fabric of most of these.
* PuppeteerParasite: Worm Jeff is one of these, at least after his host has completed their transformation.
** The otherworldly beings in [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com No Pity for the Dead]].
* PurpleProse: Often combined with {{Gorn}} to rather unfortunate effect.
* RealityEnsues: [[http://spinpasta.wikia.com/wiki/Jeff_the_Killer:_Rewritten This story]] takes a decidedly more realistic take on Jeff The Killer. [[spoiler: Jeff's murder spree ends soon after it begins. Jeff may be a psychopath but he's still just a 13 year old who cut his face up. He's effortlessly fought off in his last two attacks and the GlasgowSmile and burns he gave himself end up quickly getting infected and he dies after only a few days. The story ends with the implication that any other "Jeffs" that we see in stories are just copycat killers inspired by him.]]
* RedSkyTakeWarning: [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Sky_at_Night "Red Sky at Night"]], of course.
* TheReveal: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_uSGFuXfQU This version of "The Third Wish"]] shows us ''who'' the old man is. [[spoiler: And it holds true to his old adage: "[[ElvisPresley Wise men say only fools rush in]]."]]
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Hippie The Hippie.]] You might not get it right away. [[spoiler:The "hippie" is Jesus, and the "end of the world" he mentions is Rapture.]]
* ROMHack: Some of these Creepypastas are this.
* {{Room101}}: In any that take place in hotels.
* RoomFullOfCrazy
* RuleOfScary: Some of these monsters and horrors make no damn sense in design or motive. More often than not, ''that's exactly what's so scary about them.''
** Who is [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-house-that-death-forgot.html ''he''?]] And where did ''he'' come from? What does ''he'' want?
* RussianReversal: In Soviet Russia, Creepypasta [[BlackComedy darkly humorous]].
* SafeZoneHopeSpot: Averted. Don't count on there being one, bucko.
* ScreamerPrank: ''The .GIF'', which is about a smiley face made up of a mouth and eyes cut-out, which turns into a frowney face. Then, it screams at you, shows some horrific imagery, and closes your internet browser. People who watch it in it's entirety are found dead with a smiley face [[CouldntFindAPen drawn in blood]] next to them. Luckily, the image board immediately takes it down it and bans whoever tries to re-upload it, possibly the only use of the "removed it after 5 minutes and blocked me" cliche' for a benevolent reason, ever.
* SchmuckBait: You just ''had'' to click that link.
** Don't click reload on the website in [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Click_Reload Click Reload]]. If you do, however, then [[ResetButton never stop clicking reload]].
** Click a link? Merely ''reading'' [[http://thereissomethingbehindme.blogspot.com/2012/03/they-are-watching-me-and-now-they-are.html They Are Watching Me. And Now They Are Watching You]] is enough to make ''Them'' come for you.
** Also, do not watch Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv. Even though you can find the full video very easily, despite the story's claims. In fact, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf6Geh82vXg here it is]].
* SelfDeprecation: Why not turn your own critics into [[http://slimebeast.com/stories/the_crap_in_the_sack.php the narrator of you next story?]]
* SerialEscalation: How many more powers can Slenderman have?
* ShockSite: Some of the more disturbing images associated with creepypasta, like SMILE.jpg or Jeff The Killer, are frequently used for this purpose. Sometimes, like with Normal Porn For Normal People, a Creepypasta is centered ''around'' a supposed ShockSite that is too scary.
* ShoutOut: To us(!) ''[=SimAlbert=]'' describes the emponymous character's Sim!Family as "what TV Tropes calls 'DysfunctionJunction'".
* SinisterScrapingSound: I hope you're not honestly dumb enough to go investigating it.
* SlasherSmile: Any creepypasta monster has about a 50/50 chance of having a really creepy smile.
* SnowMeansDeath: A [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Stoic_Gaze recent]] addition to The Creepypasta Wiki kicks off when it randomly begins snowing in the middle of May...
* SnuffFilm: The creepypastas titled "Snuff Film". The first posits that many snuff films have been made and distributed around the world dating all the way back to 1896, with the latest hailing from 1984 [[spoiler:and all of them have the exact same nineteen year old girl as the "star".]] The second describes a bunch of snuff films in gory detail, the very worst one being saved for the end [[spoiler:which the narrator considers their finest work.]]
** This may be the subject of a creepypasta.
** HappyAppy has a lot of this, and says the trope by name.
* SoBadItsGood: The Creepypasta website has a sister site, Crappypasta, where the rejected submissions go. Some of them are so god-awful it's hilarious.
** [[http://trollpasta.wikia.com/wiki/DETH_TRUMPET Deth Trumpet]] deserves special mention for its sheer lulziness.
* SpookyPainting: Check.
* SpookyPhotographs: Double check.
* StandInPortrait: The above two sometimes turn out to be this.
* StylisticSuck: [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Anasi%27s_Goatman_Story Anansi's Goatman Story]] is supposed to have been written by a teenager on 4chan, so it has an abundance of cursing and poor grammar. The readers seem to be [[BrokenBase split]] on whether this is too distracting or whether it makes the story more realistic.
* SturgeonsLaw: There's a lot of CreepyPasta. Most [[MemeticMutation famously]], WHO WAS PHONE?
** And then there's [[http://trollpasta.wikia.com/wiki/DETH_TRUMPET Deth Trumpet]]...
* SubvertedKidsShow: Many of the "lost episode" and "The Truth Behind [show]" 'pastas, describing horrific episodes that never got aired (or were [[HilarityEnsues mistakenly aired]]) and putting forth theories that the characters are based off dead children respectively.
** DarthWiki/CandleCove and HappyAppy are about "children's shows" that quickly gain a supernatural bent.
** [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/SALLY._EXE Sally.exe]] (a sequel to Sonic.exe), which describes a disturbingly edited episode of SonicSatAm and a scary RomHack. (Two 'pastas for the price of one!)
* SugaryMalice: [[spoiler:Maria]] from [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Welcome_Home "Welcome Home"]].
* SuicidalOverconfidence: In "One Door Closes, Another One Opens", this is the cause of Jeff's [[spoiler: PlotTriggeringDeath.]]
* SuperSpit: Worm Jeff and his "Jeffed" hosts can spit acid as a self-defense measure.
* SurrealHorror: This isn't just the backbone or essence of CreepyPasta. This is the very string they're woven out of!
* TearsOfBlood: So common as to be a cliche.
* ThatsNoMoon: The final tree/stage visited in "[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Adam_%26_the_Tree_Climbers Adam & the Tree Climbers]]" [[spoiler: is actually what is presumably the game's final boss, the demonic Tree Caller.]]
* TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow: And you will either only know them for [[CruelAndUnusualDeath for a very short time]], or [[AndIMustScream for a very long time]] but [[BodyHorror forcefully and bodily silenced.]]
** The secrets of [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com The Codex Rusembrae]].
* ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight: And in the morning, and noon, and afternoon...
* ThisIsADrill: ''Salt House'' has the protagonist kill [[spoiler: the pedophile who kidnapped his son]] by shoving a power drill up his nose.
* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: The wiki has an entire category labelled "Mental Illness"
* TimeMaster: Jeremy, the antagonist of "The Strangest Security Tape I've Ever Seen" appears to be this. Then, it's implied that he's much, ''much'' worse...
* TomatoSurprise: Quite a few. For example, "[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/A_Diary_from_a_Dead_Planet_Called_Earth A Diary from a Dead Planet Called Earth]]".
** More examples are "[[http://wellhey.com/cold-oblivion/ Cold Oblivion]]", "[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Doors Doors]]", and "[[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Experiment_84-B Experiment 84-B]]"
* TooDumbToLive: How else do you think so many of the protagonists get hunted/haunted?
** This is especially true in TheMostDangerousVideoGame-style creepypastas. Unless there's a supernatural force forcing them to keep playing, you'll probably hear some variation of "I knew I should probably stop playing, but I didn't" at some point.
* TouchedByVorlons: In The Brother's Return, this is revealed to be how Worm Jeff was "born".
* TownWithADarkSecret: Every damn last one of them!
* TwistEnding: Expect this. A lot. The wiki has a category called "Shock Ending".
** [[http://www.creepypasta.com/the-twist-a-parody/ The Twist: A Parody]] devotes itself to this trope.
* TragicMonster: It's surprisingly rare to do this successfully (the original Jeff The Killer story tries to make the audience sympathize with Jeff and fails miserably, for instance) but when it's pulled off well, it's pulled off VERY well.
** General Angus from the Worm Jeff saga. He was [[IHaveYourWife blackmailed]], transformed against his will, and now he lives with the knowledge that he will never see his son again.
* TrollFic: An [[http://trollpasta.wikia.com entire wiki's worth!]]
* UncannyValley: In-universe; in [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Anasi%27s_Goatman_Story Anansi's Goatman Story]], when the creature is scratching at the trailer door, it begs for the protagonists to let it in (imitating their friend's words earlier). It is noted to lack normal speech cadence, which is one of the things that makes it obvious to the protagonists that what they are dealing is not human.
* UnusualEuphemism: The "'''games'''" in ''How To Play Alone''.
* UnwinnableByDesign: Chapter 32 "Go" is impossible to win, due to how the game is set up. You write the name down of... ''something'', which will hunt you down. You can't exactly win the game, as the first paragraph mentions [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption "This game will be played for an eternity".]]
* VeryLooselyBasedOnATrueStory: Authors of creepypastas take from real life events with often chilling skill.
** The author of ''They Are Watching Me. And Now They are Watching You'' very clearly has worked in a customer service call center.
* VideoGameCaringPotential: Sim Albert.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: Usually lampshaded, and often results in VideoGameCrueltyPunishment... that exceeds the fourth wall.
* ViralTransformation: More than a few protagonists ended up in the same boat as their tormentor.
* WhamLine: Oh, you best believe this occurs a lot.
** In [[http://zeddicker.blogspot.com No Pity for the Dead]]
-->'''Elmebrigge:''' "Well, some [of those possessed by ancient eldritch abominations] have been known to talk in their sleep. Others may shake their leg absent-mindedly whenever they sit for a while. Others, when they read something, say, a book or newspaper, will mouth the words to themselves. Some will have songs they haven't heard in years, or only know a few line of, recur in their heads in a seemingly endless loop."
-->'''Zeddicker:''' "That's impossible. That describes a lot of people."
-->'''Elmebrigge:''' "Yes, it does. Quite a lot of people. Millions, perhaps."
* WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief: One advice towards writing a creepypasta is to try to keep within the willing suspension of disbelief, especially when it comes to a video game Creepypasta.
* WritersCannotDoMath: "Russian Sleep Experiment", while an effective horror piece, has several discrepancies with the number of living subjects. At one point, before [[spoiler: any of them have died, the story describes the activities of two and then refers to "the remaining two" (there are 5 at this point). When they are removed from the chamber, one is already dead, one is killed during the struggle to remove them, and one dies on the operating table, yet the story continues as if three are still alive, not two.]]
** "Foreign Exchange Program" also states that twelve people were chosen - however, four decided to stay, two died off, and seven returned. Where did that thirteenth person come from?
*** Yes... where ''did'' the thirteenth person [[FridgeBrilliance come from]]?
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Jeff the Killer. That creepy person that murdered his family? He's only thirteen.
* {{Youkai}}: One of the earliest creepypastas (from way before the term was coined) was about a Bakeneko. Also, one of the webmasters of Creepypasta Wiki, Furbearingbrick, is (supposedly) a Nurikabe.
* YouthIsWastedOnTheDumb: You'd be amazed at how many are reliant on the main character ignoring all warning labels and sign posts for the fun to begin.
* ZombieApocalypse: The setting for some stories.
