Ongoing series or individual works of SequentialArt in book or magazine form; not noted on the list are the ''vast'' number of independent or 'underground' publications available. Despite the name, many such are not particularly "comic" at all, which has lead to the use of the term "Graphic Novel" in describing works with TrueArt aspirations--though some consider such phrasing needlessly pretentious. It has since acquired a more technical meaning, but debate and pretension rage on.

What has happened is that the term has helped give original sequential art in a dedicated publication format a long overdue respectability in North American mainstream culture, as evidenced by its growing presence in public library collections.

Graphic novels is also the overall term for illustrated stand alone books or series that tell full stories but with pictures integrated into or as a large part of the story text. Many of these are MiddleGradeLiterature or YoungAdult books. Graphic novels of this style started to rise to prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and some may be rereleased stories of a book or book series from the past as a revival of the series.
