->''"Cleopatra's nose, had it been shorter, [[ForWantOfANail the whole face of the world would have been changed.]]"''
-->-- '''Blaise Pascal'''

One of a number of seemingly arbitrary aesthetic rules in our society is that smaller is considered to be better where noses are concerned. This trope is an aversion to that; someone is considered attractive because of their big nose. [[TropeNamer Named]], of course, for the Egyptian queen Cleopatra, who was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world in her time, in spite or perhaps ''because'' of this facial feature.[[note]]It should be noted that contemporary writers spoke mostly about how beautiful Cleopatra's ''voice'' was.[[/note]]

Although women are hit with the whole "smaller is better" thing more, this trope isn't exclusive to one gender.

Also known as Greek Nose and Roman Nose. Compare to UnkemptBeauty, {{Meganekko}}, BigBeautifulWoman/ BigBeautifulMan, and {{Adorkable}}, other tropes that defy society's rigid standards of beauty. Related to MatzoFever and LatinLover. Because BeautyEqualsGoodness, this is often the opposite of the SinisterSchnoz.

[[folder: Anime And Manga ]]

* ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' loves this trope, with numerous major and background characters sporting unique noses without resorting to {{Gonk}}. [[ActionGirl Annie]] Leonhart is the primary example, but also included are [[TeamDad Reiner]] Braun, [[TallDarkAndHandsome Bertolt]] Hoover, [[{{Meganekko}} Hange]] Zoe, and [[TheNoseKnows Mike]] Zacharius.
* Nico Robin, and [[spoiler:her Mom]], from ''Manga/OnePiece''; pretty much the only characters drawn as such, [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters which is]] [[CastOfSnowflakes saying something]].
* [[NationsAsPeople Russia]] from ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'' has a large nose that manages to make him look more cute.
* In the most recent {{Cyborg 009}} reboot, 002's GagNose became this. [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks The fandom was displeased, to say it politely.]]

[[folder: Comic Books ]]

* ''ComicBook/{{Asterix}}''
** In "Asterix and Cleopatra", Cleopatra is drawn with a huge pointy schnoz, under the phrase that "she would be less famous if her nose was any shorter". Likewise throughout the book, characters (including Caesar) comment on how she has such a pretty nose. However, in the later book "Asterix and Son", Cleopatra is drawn with a typical ''tiny'' nose.
** Goscinny and Underzo note that a large nose is drawn as a size of character-warmth, with all the good (male) characters-- especially Asterix and Obelix-- having huge, bulbous Snuffy Smith-like noses, while the evil characters have small ones. They themselves have noticed this isn't always the case, since some of the most sweethearted characters in the whole series, like TheIngenue Panacea and LovableCoward Justforkix, have tiny noses, and some very nasty characters have huge ones, such as Brutus or Tremensdelirius. They said a better rule might be that good characters tend to have round noses and evil ones possess hooked ones, which fits Brutus and Julius Caesar, but Getafix is one of the most good characters there is and has an enormous hooked nose, and Caesar [[NobleDemon isn't too bad a person at heart either]]. There definitely is a rule for who gets what nose, but it's a more complicated one.
** Note that attractive women (Falbala, Geriatrix's wife) have normal noses, but all the comical women have cartoonish noses. Same goes for the men, comical characters and the Gauls have huge proboscis monkey-esque noses.
** The comic's version of Julius Caesar is quite handsome, with his huge, hooked Roman nose being mentioned as a specific CharmPoint.
** Inverted once in ''Recap/AsterixAndThePicts'', where the Gaulish women develop a huge shared crush on a Pictish warrior - not because of his [[WalkingShirtlessScene great body]], [[TheWoobie vulnerable personality]], intelligence and gorgeous red hair, but because his tiny nose makes him look exotic to them.

[[folder: Film ]]

* In one of the ''Franchise/SherlockHolmes'' movies with BasilRathbone, Holmes decoys an assassin by using a bust of Julius Caesar to produce a similar silhouette in his window. He quips: "Throughout history, Watson, prominent men have had prominent noses."
* ''Film/TheTruthAboutCatsAndDogs'' isn't about a big nose, it's about short, stumpy, dark-haired but smart Creator/JaneaneGarofalo, compared to tall, skinny but dumb blonde Creator/UmaThurman (who, ironically, has an almost classically big nose, compared to Janeane's smaller one).
* In ''[[OceansEleven Ocean's 13]]'' Linus disguises himself with a big prosthetic nose which the woman he seduces for a con seems to really love. Although part of it might have been the aphrodisiac cologne...
* Egon Spengler of ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}'' may count. He has the biggest nose of the cast, but in the collective universes of the movies, cartoons, and comics, he's generally considered the most physically attractive by many female characters they meet, to the point that it may be considered a RunningGag.

[[folder: Literature ]]

* In the fairy tale ''[[http://allfairytales.wordpress.com/2006/12/31/the-fairy-book-by-dinah-maria-mulock/ The Prince with the Nose]]'', a prince is cursed as a baby with a really big nose, and as he grows up, everybody tells him stuff like this: "Oh, what a handsome nose you have, so classic, just like Romans" etc.
* A play on this trope: In the fourth book of the ''{{Uglies}}'' series, Aya believes her nose is ugly because it's large (and she hasn't received the pretty surgery yet). Frizz tells her that although it may not fit ideals of glamour, it's unique and still looks pretty in its own way. [[spoiler:In the end, Tally convinces Aya to keep it.]] In the first book, Tally complained that her nose wasn't big enough.
* Holly Short, of the Literature/ArtemisFowl series, is mentioned to have a hooked nose in her initial description, but is nonetheless described as pretty.
* Some depticions and adaptations of ''Literature/{{Ivanhoe}}'' give [[MatzoFever Rebecca]] this
* The titular detective in the ''Literature/LordPeterWimsey'' novels is often described as having a beak of a nose. Harriet Vane found him attractive, although it took several novels of Wimsey being a DoggedNiceGuy to finally win her over.
* From ''Literature/TheWheelOfTime'' series, Faile ("falcon") is described as having a nose befitting her namesake. At first Perrin wonders if this makes her beautiful or not. Later on, [[HappilyMarried he decides it does.]] Although when she compares herself to [[TheVamp Berelain]], Faile thinks her nose is too big and [[ACupAngst her bosom too small]].
* The Pirate Captain in the ''Literature/ThePirates'' series self-describes his 'stentorian' nose as one of his best features.

[[folder: Live Action TV ]]

* In ''Series/TheXFiles'' episode "The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas", the old lady ghost refers to Mulder as such: "The gangling fellow, with the... er... distinguished profile."
* ''Series/DoctorWho'':
** In one ''Series/DoctorWho'' tie-in novel (Fourth Doctor), the narration made much of his "patrician nose".
*** The Fourth Doctor also really likes his own nose, specifically mentioning how attractive he finds it when first seeing himself after his regeneration. He also likes his nose enough that several of his {{Character Tic}}s involve gesturing with his finger on his nose, such as rubbing it to display thought, or pushing the tip to the side to indicate that someone else is right - which becomes a MythologyGag when he[[note]]more specifically, a distant future incarnation of the Doctor who has taken on the form and personality of the Fourth Doctor again for unclear reasons[[/note]] does it in his [[TheCameo cameo]] in "Day of the Doctor" - "[[VisualPun who... nose?]]"
*** In the 50th Anniversary Story ''The Roots of Evil'', the Fourth Doctor encounters a statue of the Eleventh Doctor (built by inhabitants of a space station obsessed with exacting revenge upon him). Leela finds the statue handsome. The Doctor specifically does ''not'' because the nose is far too small.
** Rory wouldn't have the same {{adorkable}} cuteness without his big nose. The Doctor assigns him the code name "Nose" because of it, but it certainly doesn't seem to have put Amy off, and the TARDIS calls him "the pretty one" (relative to Amy, who's a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kissogram#Variants kissogram]] in-universe and is played by a real-life model). [[spoiler: Oswin]] also calls Rory "The Nose" and says he can fence with the Doctor's [[LanternJawOfJustice chin.]]
* On an early episode of ''Series/{{Glee}}'', Rachel was told by a {{Jerkass}} choreographer to get a nose job. This has some RealitySubtext because LeaMichele had also been told multiple times that if she wanted to be famous, she would have to get a nose job.[[note]]Also happened to Music/BarbraStreisand, who Rachel was compared to.[[/note]] In a later episode, when Finn breaks her nose, Rachel is offered a nose job. She appears to be all for it - and not for [[BlatantLies the reason she says]] (it could improve her singing) but for the fact that she wants to look like Quinn. The club talks her out of it and convinces her that her nose is beautiful.
* [[LovableSexManiac Ravenna]] from the Argentine series ''Series/LosSimuladores''.
* A discussion of "pretty" from ''Series/NewsRadio:''
-->'''Beth:''' Pretty means pretty. Cute means pretty but short and/or hyperactive - like me.
-->'''Lisa:''' Uh huh. What is beautiful?
-->'''Beth:''' Beautiful means pretty and tall.
-->'''Lisa:''' Gorgeous?
-->'''Beth:''' Pretty with great hair.
-->'''Lisa:''' '''Striking?'''
-->'''Beth:''' '''Pretty with a big nose.'''
-->'''Lisa:''' Voluptuous?
-->'''Beth:''' Pretty and fat.
-->'''Lisa:''' Sexy?
-->'''Beth:''' Pretty and easy.
-->'''Lisa:''' Exotic?
-->'''Beth:''' Ugly.
* In an episode of ''Raising Dad'' Sarah becomes insecure about her nose and plans to get a nose job to fix it. Her friends and family all try to talk her out of it but she's determined to get it. At the end of the episode she talks to a popular girl she'd wanted to be like and hears that the girl wants to have all sorts of surgery done on herself, shocking Sarah who thinks the girl looks just fine. Thus she learns her Aesop.
* Vince Noir of TheMightyBoosh has a large and oddly shaped nose. He's also incredibly popular with both sexes to the point that people falling in love with him at first sight becomes a RunningGag. In an early episode he claims that his "jutting" and exaggerated features are what make him memorable and attractive.

[[folder: Mythology and Religion ]]

* Many depictions of {{Satan}} and [[HornyDevils incubi]] from the Middle Ages give them large noses [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar as metaphors for being]] [[EvilIsSexy well-endowed]].

[[folder: Video Games ]]

* Both [[http://images.wikia.com/zelda/images/5/54/The_Legend_of_Zelda_-_Twilight_Princess_Official_Soundtrack.png Link]] and [[http://zeldapower.com/images/tp/art/art_concept_zelda_full.jpg Zelda]] have a relatively large nose for {{Animesque}} Characters and they are both considered some of the best looking video game characters out there. [[http://www.zeldawiki.org/images/4/4c/Zelda_and_Peach.jpg Here]] is a picture of Zelda standing next to Peach for a comparison.
** When ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword'' came out, a good number of fans complained about Zelda's nose being changed from "regal" to "unassuming".
** The entire Gerudo race has this as a defining trait along with being almost entirely female. You could also argue that Ganon has one, backed up by his [[DracoInLeatherPants legions of fangirls]].
* Fenris (along with most of the other redesigned elves) and Anders of ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' both have prominent, large noses. They're both presented as desirable, in and out of universe.
** So does Alistair of ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins'', who is also presented as desirable - it seems that blond or white-haired MrFanservice guys with prominent noses are a signature of the series.
** ''VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition'' has Josephine, who is not only a romance option but a noblewoman and the hero's political / economic advisor.
* Lance Galahad of ''VideoGame/BrainDead13'' probably has this. [[http://www.mobygames.com/game/3do/brain-dead-13/screenshots/gameShotId,504879/ This picture speaks for itself.]]
* [[VideoGame/TheVoid Ava]] is TheVamp and has a [[http://ice-pick-lodge.wdfiles.com/local--files/turgor:ava/Ava.jpg classical profile]] to go with the Egyptian theme of her chamber.

[[folder: Web Original ]]

* In ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'', Baron Klaus Wulfenbach has a rather large nose (first seen in profile [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021211 here]]). It seems to get bigger proportionally [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20070706 as the comic goes on]].

[[folder: Western Animation ]]

* Mike Chilton in ''{{WesternAnimation/Motorcity}}''.
* Lucy in ''WesternAnimation/DespicableMe 2'', it actually causes some trouble when it and [[spoiler: Gru's long hooked nose get in the way of kissing at their wedding.]]
* Pearl from ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse''. It's actually interesting to note that, in the show's original pilot, her original design gave her a much smaller looking nose. The pointed nose she sports in the show proper is actually only one of many changes that were made to her design (as she was the character whose design arguably got the highest amount of changes going from pilot to final).

[[folder: Real Life ]]

* There's a myth going around that a man's nose is proportional to [[GagPenis another part]], thus [[BiggerIsBetterInBed making him more desirable]].
* Presumably, the Creator/ChristopherEccleston EstrogenBrigade feel this way...
* An old joke: "He has a Roman nose... roamin' all over his face!"
* Legendary actor Creator/GeorgeCScott [[http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/d9/d1/91/d9d19164f2cad5cd4bbf94c7a0b8579e.jpg had a legendary nose]], as a result of its being broken five times in bar brawls.
* Sarah Natochenny, Russian-American model/stage actress/voice actor in Pokemon is a good example of a pretty young woman with a big nose. She seems to be careful to pose in ways that make it look more beautiful than comical.
* PenelopeCruz, LeeleeSobieski, RachelWeisz, Dame Creator/HelenMirren, Creator/ElisabethMoss, Creator/ZoeBell, NataschaMcElhone, Creator/DreaDeMatteo, [[CrossingJordan Jill Hennessy]], JudyGreer, Creator/KateWinslet, Creator/ClaudiaBlack, the aforementioned Creator/UmaThurman, Creator/FeliciaDay, Creator/LauraDern, Creator/MelanieLaurent, Creator/KellyMacdonald, Creator/KatDennings, Creator/EvannaLynch, EmilyBrowning, Music/BarbraStreisand, Music/LadyGaga, Music/SaraBareilles, SarahJessicaParker, Creator/MerylStreep and [[TheHouseOfWindsor Diana, Princess of Wales]] - all notably attractive, and all with decidedly large noses.
* SergeGainsbourg
* In the 1960's, this was one of the reasons RingoStarr had so many fangirls. Of course, that didn't stop his nose from becoming a running gag.
* Jennifer Grey actually ''ruined'' her career because of this. She got a nose job, and immediately her career went in the toilet. Turns out her fans ''liked'' her big nose.
* Many people thought Music/AshleeSimpson also looked better before her nose job.
* Internet critics NoahAntwiler, ObscurusLupa and PushingUpRoses. All tend to have this exaggerated a bit in their title cards, so they definitely know it's their most striking feature.
* Creator/AdrienBrody's nose contributes to his unconventional good looks.
* Figure skater Evgeni Plushenko.
* Thomas Gould's famous [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kamehameha_I_head_to_waist_5111.jpg statues of Kamehameha the Great of Hawaii]] give the late king this feature, [[HistoricalBeautyUpdate even though he looked more like]] [[http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/58/Kamehameha_I.png/349px-Kamehameha_I.png this.]]

His legions of fangirls don't mind in the least (and at least a few like him '''because''' of it.)
* [[https://twitter.com/undeux Adult entertainment star April O'Neil]]
* Jacqueline Emerson (Foxface from ''Film/TheHungerGames''). Overlaps with WhenSheSmiles, because her nose looks even bigger when she smiles.
* Actor/comedian Paul Rust has an especially magnificent hooter. In fact, when you type his name into Google, 'Paul Rust nose' is one of the first suggestions.
* Jari Maenpaa of ''Music/{{Ensiferum}}'' and Wintersun has quite an impressive one. [[http://fuckyeahjarisnose.tumblr.com/ There's even a blog dedicated to it, although it hasn't been updated in a while]].
* [[{{Series/Grimm}} Sasha]] [[{{Series/Caprica}} Roiz]]
* As some examples already show, [[http://24.media.tumblr.com/0c62516e1f358be7da52c3d3dc2d9444/tumblr_mqjld0r9jm1rl2xsfo1_1280.jpg this is pretty common among Russians.]] Russians are known for having beautiful women and big noses, so [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs beautiful Russian women with big noses]] crop up.
* The StatueOfLiberty has a 4 and a half long schnoz that's a bit long for her 10 by 17 foot face that gives her a look of graceful dignity.
* NoelFielding has a uniquely shaped and self-admittedly large nose but it doesn't stop him from being one of the sexiest men alive with hoards of fans of both genders.
* [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Aki Angela Aki]]'s classic Roman profile, while unusual for a Japanese, is easily explained by her being Japanese-''Italian''-American, and her nose, while undeniably large and hooked, only adds to her rather unconventional beauty.
