A horror/fantasy/mystery series of novels, fifteen and counting plus associated short stories and comic miniseries and the like, by Creator/JimButcher. Harry Dresden is a [[OccultDetective wizard and private detective]] operating out of modern day UsefulNotes/{{Chicago}} (he's in the phone book under "wizards"; surprisingly, he's the only entry), and reluctantly hired by a special police task force as a consultant on supernatural crimes. The GenreSavvy protagonist cracks jokes about the UrbanFantasy-DungeonPunk setting and the tropes it uses.

Harry meets a wide variety of characters in the series, including Karrin Murphy, the ActionGirl cop who's [[BrokenMasquerade aware of the city's supernatural underworld]]; Bob, [[SealedBadassInACan a spirit of intellect who lives in a skull]]--human-shaped ghost in the television series--is Harry's literal MagicalComputer; Michael Carpenter, a modern-day [[ThePaladin paladin]] wielding a [[CoolSword holy sword]]; Billy the [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent Werewolf]] and his pack of Alphas (a group of young [[HeroicWannabe heroic wannabes]]); Thomas Raith, the LoveableRogue [[strike:incubus]] [[HornyDevils White]] [[DeadlyDecadentCourt Court]] [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampire]]; Harry's on-and-off love interest [[HotScoop reporter]] Susan Rodriguez; and Molly Carpenter, Michael's oldest daughter and Harry's [[TheApprentice apprentice]]. Like many detective stories, Harry meets a ridiculous number of [[FemmeFatale femmes fatales]], [[TheDon crime bosses]], and [[{{Mooks}} hired goons]], which is frequently [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] in the series.

Butcher has promised that all of the stories will eventually be republished in Dresden-exclusive anthologies; the next full-sized collection after ''Side Jobs'' will be called ''Brief Cases'', which will include the Bigfoot trilogy, the eight uncollected stories above, and "Zoo Day", a new novella (originally announced as a spin-off novel at [=EasterCon=] 2015) centered around Maggie and Mouse. It is scheduled for release in summer 2018.

In addition to the prose works, there are six graphic novel stories:

# ''ComicBook/WelcomeToTheJungle'' (set before ''Literature/StormFront'')
# ''ComicBook/GhoulGoblin'' (set after ''Literature/FoolMoon'')
# ''ComicBook/WarCry'' (set after ''Literature/DeadBeat'')
# ''ComicBook/DownTown'' (set after ''Literature/WhiteNight'')
# ''ComicBook/WildCard'' (set after ''ComicBook/DownTown'')
# ''ComicBook/DogMen'' (set after ''ComicBook/WildCard'')

Finally, the Dresden Files has been adapted into a [[Series/TheDresdenFiles drama series on the Sci Fi Channel]], a [[TabletopGame/TheDresdenFiles tabletop RPG]] which is [[DirectLineToTheAuthor written from the characters' perspective]], and a [[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/the-dresden-files-cooperative-card-game cooperative card game]] which funded on Kickstarter at over half a million dollars.

WordOfGod says that the series will have at least twenty books, which will then be capped off by an apocalyptic trilogy. Because, to quote the author, [[RuleOfCool "Who doesn't love apocalyptic trilogies?"]] In August 2011, he also hinted that the titles of the final three books would be "Stars and Stones," "Hell's Bells," and "Empty Night," because "they're called curses for a reason."

In addition to the page links at the top, there is also a [[ShoutOut/TheDresdenFiles shout out]] page. The recap [[Recap/TheDresdenFiles page]] is under major construction, so help with it would be appreciated.
