* In the real world, the RX-78-2 and the other Project V mobile suits were decked out in a {{Toyetic}} paint scheme to sell the show to kids. In-universe, they were prototypes, and ''prototype jet fighters in the 1970s and 80s were painted in similar bright and bold colours''. [[http://zone-five.net/showpost.php?s=d4151f6c1769d0e0b55a06f7af485210&p=80989&postcount=10 Here's an example.]]
** In the case of the RX-78-2, a mostly white paint job also makes sense for a machine meant to operate mainly in space - IRL, spacecraft are often painted white as a form of passive cooling, since white reflects light and thus heat, and overheating is a constant risk in a vacuum where heat cannot disperse except by radiation.
* Why do Zeon mobile suits always have that one red eye? It's a VisualPun of sorts on how they never seem to win. In Japanese culture [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daruma_doll daruma dolls]] are used as a sort of good luck charm to wish for success in an upcoming endeavor, like studying for an exam or running for political office. You paint on one eye when you start and the other when you succeed. The implication is obvious.
* Beyond just having to use what they had lying around with the large assortment of tanks and other vehicles for combat, it makes sense why they sort of disappear the deeper you get into the Universal Century: short of hover technology that would take another century to really hone down, the more advanced the Mobile Suits got, the worse it became for mixed infantry and armored support. A single tank's cannon with a limited turning speed and movement inhibited by its terrain would be utterly crushed by Mobile Suits able to use virtually any surroundings as cover, fire with less mobility issues from almost any position, and generally be less of a sitting duck in a heated firefight. Plus, the scalability of humanoid machines for construction and combat work alike becomes invaluable in a world that managed to create the tech to such a refined degree.
* By choosing to use colonies instead of the planets, the writers cleverly sidestep the research work needed to make terra-forming seem scientifically plausible.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn'' reveals that the goal of Side colonies wasn't to colonize the solar system to begin with, [[spoiler:but to give Earth time to heal itself.]]
* Whenever Revil puts his flag on a ''Magellan'', the name has a deeper meaning:
** At Loum he commanded from the ''Ananke'', meaning "necessity" in Greek. Someone in the Federation sees war as NecessarilyEvil... And Revil agrees.
** In the counteroffensive his flagship is the ''Phoebe''. In Greek mythology Phoebe is one of the original Titans, grandmother of Artemis (goddess of the Moon and the hunt), Apollo (god of arts, medicine, the Sun, and prophecy), and Hecate (goddess of crossroads and magic), and is herself associated with the moon and prophecy. This should be obvious.
*** FridgeHorror: Phoebe is a Titan. [[Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam Looks like he had fanboys who didn't get what he actually wanted]]...
* Quite a lot of ink has been spilled to justify why the crew of the White Base reported Char's Zaku going [[Main/RedOnesGoFaster three times faster]] than the others. Most of the writers forget that there is no such thing as Main/SpaceFriction and therefore ''no top speed in space''; as long as a vehicle is carrying enough reaction mass, it just needs to keep the thrusters burning to accelerate and it can reach any speed the pilot likes. Char's Zaku doesn't need to have thrusters three times more powerful in order to go three times faster; all it needs is a pilot who's [[Main/AcePilot just that skilled]] and [[Main/DrivesLikeCrazy just that reckless]].
* Somewhat debatable, but Zeon is called a Principality, even though it's lead by a Archduke. Website/TheOtherWiki, however, notes that "principality" can denote any society lead by a monarch, no matter what they call themselves. This bothered Fred Schodt, though, and when he translated Tomino's novels he changed the name to "The Zeon Archduchy"; as with all his other changes (Sha for Char, Zak for Zaku, et cetera), it never caught on. The whole thing makes a bit more sense given the nation's backstory. Even after the Zabi family took power and declared themselves royalty, Zeon was still (at least nominally) a semi-autonomous Federation state for a while before they began to push for full independence. Degwin calling himself Archduke instead of King or Emperor was a sop to the Federation's authority. [[{{Woolseyism}} On the other hand, the official English version's more ambiguous "Sovereign" and "Principality" come off as a lot more canny]]. A principality can, like a duchy, refer to the domain of a noble in a larger empire (as in the principalities of UsefulNotes/TheRomanEmpire or the "princely states" of India during UsefulNotes/TheRaj) but it has ''also'' been used to refer to small, independent or semi-independent states like those that eventually unified to become Germany and Italy. It's hardly a stretch to think of Degwin, [[TheEvilPrince and especially Ghiren]], presenting themselves to the Federation as the former while plotting to become the latter.

* At the beginning of the series, various stray shots kill Frau's family and nearly blows Amuro himself up multiple times. Except ''none of it'' was the attacking Zaku who was notably avoiding shooting at civilians, but the inefficient Federation weaponry. In fact, the very shell that blows up two soldiers carrying the Gundam manual, which causes it to end up in Amuro's hands, was pure unintentional CollateralDamage of a curved shot completely missing its target and right over his head. ''The entire series started because of a misfire.''
** Amuro's first kill is also the perfect example of how horrible collateral can be in the franchise between Mobile Suits. The engine exploding is equivalent to a miniature nuclear bomb going off, blowing a hole through Side 7 like it's paper mache (and unwittingly spacing his father in the process). This is only the ''beginning'' of the series before their cores expand and the power becomes more and more extensive and necessary, meaning their latent dangers from core explosions just get worse and worse for any potential population center warfare.
* At first glance Lalah's cheerful appearance seems out of place, considering her past is similar to that of [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn another young lady]]. But then it's revealed that the Flanagan Institute considered her their star student and she was subjected to testing out Newtype weaponry, and later in ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack'' Char reveals he regrets using Lalah like a machine. Adding this together, it begins to sound ''very'' similar to a certain girl in ''Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam'' who was a Newtype guinea pig for weapons and subjected to massive amounts of torture and MindRape, while displaying an identical cheerful disposition that seemed off. [[TheWoobie No wonder Lalah seemed happy after she died.]]
** Let's not forget that, ''before'' being taken in by the Flanagan institute, Char found Lalah in the streets. Who knows what kind of life she left back then.
*** According to a 1997 novel, she was a child prostitute. Indicating that, unless the scientists at the Flanagan Institute were completely abusive, life there was indeed much better that what she had before.
** This explains why Lalah doesn't realize Char is a villain: she has seen the absolute best of his personality (in fact she brings some of the best out of him) and has no idea what else he has done.
* If Miharu hadn't died to the Gunperry's missile backblast or the fall into the ocean below, by some misfortunate miracle, she was in direct waters and almost immediate exposure to the nuclear explosion of the Zeon submarine a ready combat sight distance away from their own vessel. Death by the other two means would be a mercy by comparison to being unwittingly left for dead at the edge of irradiated waters.
