* Most everyone believes that Georges died in World War I... While he may not have died ''in'' the war, he, as a legend, died ''with'' the war. It takes a big emotional journey for him to reclaim his place in history.
* ''Hugo'' was designed to be shown in 3-D, which, when done well, can make audiences feel like they're part of the action or even [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou give them a sense of peril]]. The movie also pays tribute to the early days of film, when moving pictures such as ''A Train Arrives in the Station'' and ''Film/{{The Great Train Robbery|1903}}'' were shockingly realistic to viewers. One scene shows audiences jumping in their seats to avoid a train that is seemingly coming toward them.
* Georges Méliès asks, when he sees [[spoiler:''his'' automaton]] if this is a ghost. At first glance, he seems to be delusional. Later, turns out he is ObfuscatingStupidity and knows very well what this is. But there is another layer in it. [[spoiler:It's a ghost from his past!]]
* The movie's tagline is, "One of the most legendary directors of our time takes you on an extraordinary adventure." It seems like this is supposed to be emphasizing Creator/{{Martin Scorsese}}'s involvement to sell tickets, but when you think about it, [[spoiler: it could also be referring to the "legendary filmmaker" Georges Méliès, since so much of the movie revolves around the "emotional journey" caused by his movies, and he ends up setting most of the plot in motion]].

* The movie takes place in 1931. Assuming that there isn't going to be AlternateHistory and most of the characters intend to stay in France, [[LaResistance what's going]] [[LesCollaborateurs to happen]] to Hugo and friends [[ThoseWackyNazis in the]] [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII 1940's?]].
** Georges Méliès died in 1938 according to Website/TheOtherWiki. The others are a matter for WildMassGuessing. The [[WMG/GrandUnifyingGuesses Actor Rule]] doesn't bode well for Hugo...
** Jeanne d'Alcy died in 1956, and the inspiration for the character of Isabelle (Méliès's granddaughter, Madeleine) lived until July of 2018, and both of them were living in France. It may be tough, but it sounds like the characters will make it out alright. Plus, Hugo is no stranger to bad conditions, so he can adapt.
