* Supposedly, the reason why Fogg wins the bet is because he forgot that, when he crossed the International Date Line, he gained a day. However, when he arrives to New York to take the ship that should supposedly bring them to London, he finds out that the ship departed just a few minutes before they reached the port. I know this is just so that it adds drama to the situation, but had everything happened as it was said, Fogg would have arrived one day before the ship departed for London, not a few minutes late.
* It also seems increasingly unlikely for Fogg to have forgotten about the International Date Line given that he had to keep readjusting his watch to the local time zone in order to catch all of those trains he took to finish the trip (and indeed, being able to line up train schedules once the intercontinental rail roads in the US and Europe started running was one of the major factors of establishing internationally recognized time zones to begin with).
