''X-Men: Days of Future Past'' is the 2014 sequel to ''Film/XMenFirstClass'', based on the Creator/MarvelComics story of the [[ComicBook/DaysOfFuturePast same name]]. It is also the seventh installment in Fox's ''Film/{{X-Men}}'' franchise.

In the [[TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture near future]], mutants have become an endangered species, hunted by the [[KillerRobot mechanical "Sentinels"]] of Trask Industries. With nowhere else to turn, Professor X and Magneto [[EnemyMine band together]] for a final desperate plan: use experimental TimeTravel technology to send one of their own into the past, and [[SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong stop the war between man and mutant before it ever begins]].

The film is directed by BryanSinger, of ''Film/XMen1'' and ''Film/X2XMenUnited'' fame, with ''First Class'' director Matthew Vaughn serving as a producer. Many actors from ''First Class'' and the original ''X-Men'' film trilogy also return, such as JamesMcAvoy, MichaelFassbender, Creator/PatrickStewart, Creator/IanMcKellen and Creator/HughJackman. Creator/PeterDinklage also joins the cast as Bolivar Trask, among other newcomers.

!!Tropes applying to this film:

* AbilityOverAppearance: In the comics, Bolivar Trask is an older man and of average height, a far cry from Peter Dinklage, the acclaimed actor portraying him.
* AdvertisedExtra: AnnaPaquin as Rogue. She even got her own ''Empire'' cover despite the fact that most of her scenes were cut from the final film.
* AgeLift: [[ScarletWitch Wanda Maximoff]] makes an appearance, but as {{Quicksilver}}'s ''younger'' sister rather than his twin.
* AIIsACrapshoot: In Wolverine's own words, the Sentinels were created to kill mutants, but quickly turned against their human masters and began hunting them as well.
* {{BFG}}: True to the comics, Bishop has one.
* TheBusCameBack: Toad finally returns for his first appearance since the original X-Men movie.
** BusCrash: [[AllThereInTheManual The tie-in website]] reveals that [[spoiler: Angel and Beast]] from ''Film/XMenTheLastStand'' were killed (by Sentinels and human rioters respectively) a few years before the events of the movie.
* CivvieSpandex: Evan Peters has said Quicksilver does not wear a costume, but instead has a "cool jacket" and a pair of goggles.
* ContinuityNod
** A museum exhibit showing mutant artifacts from the 60s' has Sebastian Shaw's helmet, one of Angel Salvadore's severed wings, and Havok's X-Men uniform on display. Each of these were presumably recovered from the final battle in ''X-Men: First Class''.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: The Sentinels
* HideYourPregnancy: Since Halle Berry is pregnant, Storm's role will be rewritten to keep her out of action scenes.
* TheHunter: Sentinels.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: Young Erik has grown increasingly amoral since his actions in ''First Class''. Also lampshaded by his older self.
-->'''Wolverine:''' And where do I find you?\\
'''Magneto:''' On a different path... a darker path...
* KillerRobot: The mutant-hunting Sentinels, manufactured by Trask Industries.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters
* MentalTimeTravel: 2023 Wolverine's mind gets beamed back in time into his younger self's body in the 1970s.
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack:
** The BadFuture X-Men wear practical black body armor.
** Subverted with the 70s-era X-Men, who sport their colorful blue and yellow uniforms from ''First Class''.
** Set photos show the young Magneto clad in a costume that looks like a cross between his red comic book outfit and the black suit Ian [=McKellen=] wore in the original trilogy.
* MythologyGag
** Wolverine's future outfit has yellow and blue elements as a nod to his classic comic book outfit.
* PornStache: Bolivar Trask.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The ageless Wolverine gets sent back in time instead of Kitty Pryde, as film Kitty wouldn't have been born in 1973.
* RaceLift: Blink is played by Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. She's the daughter of two white Jamaicans in the comics (Or at least she's generally treated as such with the idea that her skin tone and elf-like ears are the result of her mutation and were present from the day she was born), though she lives in the US.
* RecycledTrailerMusic: The trailer uses both [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQXVzg2PiZw Adagio in D Minor]] from ''Film/{{Sunshine}}'' and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOFZSnz9J3s Journey to the Line]] from ''Film/TheThinRedLine''.
** The original trailer shown at Comic-Con used "Time" from ''Film/{{Inception}}''.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong
* TheSeventies: Part of the film takes place in 1973.
* SeventiesHair: "Young" Professor X still has a full head of hair, though he now resembles a counterculture beatnik.
* ShoutOut:
** In one scene, Wolverine takes [[http://www.empireonline.com/gallery/image.asp?id=76451&caption=&gallery=4854 these]] 7 bullet wounds to the chest that together look like the Big Dipper, in a reference to the classic AfterTheEnd Japanese manga, ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar''.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the original story, future Wolverine died pretty quickly [[TheWorfEffect to show just how deadly the future Sentinels were]]. In the movie, he's one of the main characters and the one who travels back in time in the first place.
* StealthPun: The temp score used in the Comic Con trailer is a Creator/HansZimmer piece called "[[TimeTravel Time]]".
* TimeShiftedActor:
** Josh Helman plays young William Stryker, replacing Danny Huston as [[XMenOriginsWolverine middle-aged Stryker]] and Brian Cox as [[X2XMenUnited old Stryker]].
** JamesMcAvoy plays young Professor X, while Creator/PatrickStewart portrays old Xavier.
** MichaelFassbender plays young Magneto, while Creator/IanMcKellen portrays old Magneto.
** Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as the young Beast, while Kelsey Grammer will cameo as middle-aged Beast.
** Evan Jonigkeit plays a younger version of Toad, replacing Ray Park.
* TookALevelInBadass: In comparison to ''Film/XMenFirstClass'' where her only physical scenes involved weight training and her shape changing abilities used only as a distraction to aid someone else, Mystique has developed into using some of the acrobatic fighting style that her older counterpart from the original trilogy excelled at.
* WhoShotJFK: Apparently, Magneto had been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and this is what brought mutant powers into the mainstream public eye. He insists he was actually trying to ''stop'' the assassination, and implies that it was actually [[TheStarscream Mystique]], disguised as Lee Harvey Oswald, who killed him.
