Denver pot dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) gets his money and stash stolen. His boss offers to waive his debt ''and'' pay him a hundred thousand dollars if he [[RoadMovie goes to]] [[SouthOfTheBorder Mexico]] to pick up [[BlatantLies "a smidge--maybe a smidge and a half"]] of marijuana from his supplier for him. Or he can just kill him now.

David decides a single man would arouse suspicion at the border, so he decides to recruit himself an All-American family for cover: His stripper neighbor Rose (Creator/JenniferAniston), a local teen runaway Casey (Creator/EmmaRoberts), and the dorky teen next door Kenny (Will Poulter). HilarityEnsues.

Although the film received mixed reviews from critics it was a huge success with audiences, earning $266 million worldwide while only costing $37 million to make. It was the most financially successful live-action comedy of 2013. A sequel is rumored to be in development, with some sources reporting that Jennifer Aniston is being paid $15 million to reprise her role as Rose.

!!Tropes used in ''We're the Millers'':

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys:
** Tattooed bad boy Scotty P. attracts the attention of Casey.
** Possibly why Rose was with her ex-boyfriend, who ended up leaving her in a lot of debt and stole all of her money before abandoning her.
* AlmostKiss: Happens between [[spoiler:David and Rose near the end of the film, but they are interrupted by Casey.]]
* AmusingInjuries: Kenny after he gets bitten in his crotch area by a tarantula. And since he's allergic to the spider venom, it grows comically large, which Casey films.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse:
** Brad wants David to do a drug smuggling run for him to Mexico. He offers not only to waive what David owes him, about $43,000, but also promises to pay him $100,000 for it. David refuses initially, because he doesn't want to risk being caught as a drug smuggler. Brad then reminds him that he has no choice in the matter.
** David does this to Rose as well. Not being very fond of him, she understandably refuses at first. However, she quits her stripper job after her boss says he wants her to have sex with the customers, and she also gets an eviction notice, so the money he was offering her for a brief job suddenly doesn't sound so bad.
* AntiHero: David and the entire family actually; Rose and Casey have {{Jerkass}} elements (if not to the extent of David) and Kenny is a ClassicalAntiHero.
* AsideGlance: David gives one during Rose's stripping scene, with a big smile.
* AssholeVictim: Brad, David's "boss" with the drug dealing. He wants David to simply bring some drugs in from Mexico in exchange for forgiving his debt, and paying him $100,000 as well. However, he doesn't mention some key details, which gets David in a lot of trouble along the way, [[spoiler:such as they were taking the drugs from a rival drug lord, and he also had no intention to pay David for it, hence why he was agreeable when David demanded $500,000 as hazard pay. Then the Drug Enforcement Agency storms Brad's mansion shortly afterward, with David promising to testify against Brad and Pablo in exchange for not going to jail.]]
* BecomingTheMask: The band of misfits actually starts turning into a family.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between David and Rose. It's even lampshaded by Don in a scene on the Extended Edition Blu-Ray/DVD.
* BenevolentBoss: Pablo Chacon has a whole little community inside his fortified compound, including the families of employees. He's also understanding and pragmatic when he realises One Eye has been duped, and later seems genuinely upset by the frequency with which his lieutenant is getting beaten up by the good guys.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Don rescues the Millers, along with his wife and daughter, from One-Eye after the latter brandishes a gun on them.
** Kenny does one moments later, [[spoiler:punching out Pablo when he attempts to pull the second gun out to shoot them.]]
* TheBigDamnKiss:
** Kenny and Melissa
** David and Rose, not two seconds later.
* BigSisterInstinct: Despite not actually being Kenny's sister, Casey often shows that she cares deeply about him.
* BillingDisplacement: Jennifer Aniston got top billing over Jason Sudeikis.
* BikiniBar: Not even Boner Garage takes her top off in the strip club, despite it being seedy enough that the owner is telling his strippers to have sex with customers for money.
* BiTheWay: Edie is fairly happily married to Don, but admits a few times to having gotten excited when she touched Rose's breasts.
* BookEnds: The Youtube videos near the beginning and end.
* ButtMonkey: Kenny. In one example, while they're boarding a plane, David and Casey both give the TSA official their driver's license. Neither one of them look like they do in the picture, and the official lets both of them pass without incident. He then looks at Kenny's license, and though he looks no different in his picture, the official orders a full body search on him.
* CarFu: Kenny accidentally runs over One-eye while they're attempting to escape. The latter must be MadeOfIron because he's able to get back up moments later with Pablo's assistance and fire at the Miller's RV while they're fleeing the mechanic shop.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Casey talking on her phone immediately after the three thugs attempting to steal it divert their attention to David and his drug money instead as if it were a really minor inconvenience rather than the real danger she could have been in had Kenny and David not of intervened.
* CasualKink:
** Casey likes to be strangled when she makes out with a guy.
** Edie wants Don to use his zip cliffs on her once he gets his mojo back.
* ChekhovsGun:
** Rose reading the RV instruction manual comes back when David's pushing it too hard blows the radiator hose.
** Kenny learning how to kiss.
** Kenny learning about not hesitating to do things. David teaches him to count to three, but later when he tries it out, Casey tells him to do it after counting to one. [[spoiler:Casey's method comes in very handy later when he simply punches Pablo instead of waiting.]]
** The tarantula in the fruit basket.
** Brad's new skylight.
* ChekhovsGunman: Don, whose occupation becomes very important in the climax.
* ClusterFBomb: Comes from Kenny when he gets bitten on the testicle by the tarantula.
* ConscienceMakesYouGoBack: David tries desperately not to do this, but he does.
* {{Corpsing}}: David and Rose try very hard not to laugh when Kenny starts singing to the radio. Rose almost succeeds.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy:
** The border guard at the US checkpoint when the Millers attempt to return into the US grows suspicious of David after he fails to answer the officer's questions. He is about to check inside their RV for any contraband, but thankfully they are saved by some Mexicans who had hitched a ride and attempt to escape into the US, which then causes the officer to divert his attention and mention this happens quite often.
** Pablo Chacon was smart enough to put a GPS tracker on the drugs his henchmen gave to David. He also lays a trap for them at the mechanic shop, and continues to pursue them with the mechanic's truck after they accidentally smash his car while escaping earlier.
* TheDitz: Boner Garage.
* DeadpanSnarker: Applies to David, Rose, and Casey.
* DistractedByTheSexy: This is how Rose manages to get the drop on Pablo and save her "family" from being executed.
* EggSitting: The Millers have to wrap a pack of marijuana in a blanket and pretend it is a baby to stop the others from seeing it. When the pack eventually gets thrown into the street and run over, Casey quickly covers by claiming she was taking care of a pack of herbs for a school project.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Boner Garage (although she doesn't think it's embarrassing).
* EmbarrassingTattoo: Scotty P's neck tattoo (although he clearly has "No [[RougeAnglesOfSatin Ragrets]]"...)
* EurekaMoment: David conceives his "let's pretend to be a family" plan after seeing a police officer helping out a family in a RV.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: The One-eyed henchman is very upset when Kenny sheepishly declines a gift basket from the former's mother.
* [[EvenEvilHasStandards Even Jerkasses Have Standards]]:
** David spends most of the movie being a Grade-A {{Jerkass}}, but he makes it clear that he has one rule: He doesn't deal pot to kids. Period.
** Pablo is no doubt a heinous drug lord, but after David pleads for the other's lives, the former tells the latter he'll kill him first so that he doesn't have to witness the others being killed.
* EvilVersusEvil: Brad versus Pablo.
* FailedASpotCheck: One-Eye gives the drugs to David after the latter says he's there to pick up drugs for Pablo Chacon. [[spoiler:Pablo Chacon then shows up later with another white guy, and says he was going to personally supervise the drug smuggling, but One-Eye states they thought David was the person his boss was talking about. Pablo coming in to check on them personally suggests they have done this in the past.]]
* {{Fanservice}}: Rose's strip tease in the garage.
* AFatherToHisMen: Pablo Chacon, despite being a drug lord, seems to actually take care of his men. The first evidence of it is seen when David picks up the drugs, and they see kids running around the courtyard. And despite One-Eye screwing up the drug mission, he doesn't suffer a YouHaveFailedMe moment. Pablo later even states he hates what keeps happening to his henchman whenever they run into Millers while at the carnival near the end of the film.
* FauxAffablyEvil:
** Pablo Chacon, who tends to banter with the Millers at gunpoint, as if he might actually spare them, only to reveal he plans on killing them no matter what.
** Brad Gurdlinger who pretends to be friendly and affable, but is actually a backstabbing dick.
* FiveManBand:
** TheHero: David as the closest thing they have to a leader.
** TheLancer: Rose as the person who often defies David and is often the next person they look to for guidance.
** TheSmartGuy: Casey as the one who usually thinks of solutions.
** TheChick: Kenny is the most soft-hearted of all of them.
** TokenEvilTeammate: Brad, although he doesn't come along with them. If he wasn't evil, he could have easily been DaChief.
* GilliganCut: When they pass the fireworks stand, Casey, Kenny, and even Rose says they should stop for some. David refuses, and tries to put his foot down on the matter. The next scene then shows them setting off one firework, and then they continue on with the trip.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: When Edie asks if she can touch Rose's breasts, David says he has no problem and Don quickly puts on his eyeglasses.
* GoodFeelsGood: David is asked this at the end of the film, [[spoiler:by Don, who turns out to be a DEA officer. He claims turning in a drug lord doesn't feel as good as getting paid a lot of money for it, but then changes his mind and says "maybe a little bit".]]
* GoshdangItToHeck: Edie's "swearing", which consists of such foul utterances as "crumbums" and "Oklahoma".
* GroinAttack: Kenny gets bitten on the testicle by a tarantula that [[SquirrelsInMyPants crawled into his shorts.]] His testicle gets incredibly swollen, and he has to be taken to the hospital.
* HiddenDepths: Kenny can actually rap pretty good.
* HilariousOuttakes:
** In the credits, one is a prank on Jennifer Aniston, during the "Waterfalls" scene...only they replace "Waterfalls" with [[ActorAllusion the theme from]] ''Series/{{Friends}}''.
** Emma Roberts, who plays Casey, displays a DumbBlonde moment in one of the out takes, when she's unable to open a mini-fridge in one scene. She pulls really hard on it, but is unable to open the door. After struggling for a few more moments, a crew member then simply pushes the handle slightly, and the door opens up.
* HollywoodNerd:
** Take the gorgeous Molly Quinn, put her in a [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings "What Would Frodo Do?"]] T-shirt, and presto! Instant love interest for Kenny.
** TruthInTelevision: Molly Quinn is a [[OneOfUs/TVDweebs huge nerd in Real Life]].
** Also lampshaded [[spoiler:at the end of the film when David walks in on Rose wearing glasses and using a laptop computer. He says "Look at this sexy nerd."]]
* HypocriticalHumor:
** When David lectures the kids about how they aren't a family and this isn't a family trip...it sounds a lot like a an angry father ranting, complete with, "[[StockPhrases Don't make me turn this (vehicle) around.]]"
** When the "family" is stopped by a Mexican bike cop he either wants a bribe of $1000 (which David doesn't have) or a sexual favor. When it turns out that he's gay, David orders Kenny to suck his dick. As they deliberate on how to proceed, the cop asks if he's going to receive fellatio or "1000 pesos", which is about $80, David just pays him off and remarks that he can't believe Kenny was going to suck the cop's dick.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: During the scene where the Millers are fleeing the mechanic shop, Pablo Chacon and One-Eye shoot at them. None of their shots hits any of the Millers, nor does it seem to damage the RV at all.
* ImportantHaircut: David's transformation from drug dealer to wholesome American father.
* InsistentTerminology: The Millers are drug smugglers, not dealers.
* InstantWebHit: [[spoiler:The video that Casey takes of Kenny's swollen testicle becomes a popular internet video by the end of the film.]] Also, the film begins with David watching a bunch of silly Youtube videos.
* IronicEcho: "Kind of a dick move, don't you think?"
* {{Jerkass}}: David starts out as one but finally evolves into a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at the end.
* KarmaHoudini:
** The gang who attacks Casey [[spoiler:and robs David,]] which sets the plot in motion never faces any repercussions.
** Rose's ex-boyfriend. Though he's never seen on screen, she mentions later in the film that he left her after maxing out her credit cards and taking all the money in her bank account. This helps explain why she was so distressed at the eviction notice, along with why she suddenly decided to help David in his wacky plan and asked for a seemingly large sum of money.
* LetsGetDangerous: [[spoiler:Near the end of the movie, Don disarms and subdues a Mexican drug cartel enforcer using nothing but a mug.]]
* LoopholeAbuse:
** After hearing that they were smuggling drugs, Don says that he'll have to arrest the Millers. However, because of everything that's happened up to that point, he says he'll do it right after he hugs his wife and daughter. He then hugs them a very long time, which clues them in to escape.
** Don does this again for David in the next scene, after the latter delivers the drugs to Brad. [[spoiler:]]
* MadeOfIron: During the escape from the garage, David clubs the one-eyed henchman in the head with a heavy monkey wrench. The one-eyed henchman shrugs it off easily. Getting [[CarFu run over by a large RV]] apparently doesn't faze him much either, and he's able to get up and shoot at them moments later.
* AManIsNotAVirgin: Everybody naturally assumes that the stereotypically dorky Kenny is a virgin...and they're correct. They are surprised he had never kissed a girl, though.
* MsFanservice: Rose
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Kenny revealing David to be a drug dealer to the three thugs at the beginning of the film causes him to get assaulted by them.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Kenny attempts to save Casey from being assaulted by three thugs at the beginning of the film, but he's easily overpowered by them. David tries to intervene, but Kenny accidentally reveals that he's a drug dealer, causing them to attack David and rob him blind. Casey meanwhile, just walks away and continues talking to someone on her phone as if what just happened was a minor inconvenience.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: Not only is Rose's "baby" flung through the air onto a road, not only is it run over, but it is hit by a semi...and then another one, and another.
* NoSell: David attempts to knock out One-eye with a large wrench. It doesn't work.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Said by Kenny when David catches him kissing Casey.
-->'''David''': [[PracticeKiss It looks like Casey is teaching you how to kiss out of pity.]]
-->'''Kenny''': Then it is what it looks like.
** [[spoiler: And then Melissa catches them, too.]]
* OneDialogueTwoConversations: When the corrupt Mexican cop was asking for a bribe and he and David argued numbers, the cop meant pesos and David thought he meant dollars.
* OverreactingAirportSecurity: When the TSA officer is checking the "Millers'" [=IDs=], he doesn't see anything suspicious about David and Casey's driver licenses (David is unshaven and has a different haircut in the photo, while Casey has a dozen piercings in hers), although their pictures look ''very'' different from their current looks. Kenny looks exactly like his picture... and he gets strip-searched for that.
* PracticeKiss: Kenny is taught to kiss by Casey... and Rose, too. Oh, and David watches. [[spoiler:Melissa catches sight of this as well shortly afterwards.]]
* RagingStiffie: During Rose's striptease, Kenny has to adjust his shorts. David slaps him.
* ReallyGetsAround: Boner Garage (as implied by her nickname). When she finds out that she's now expected to have sex with the customers, she's excited about it.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Don.
* RoadMovie: The plot of the movie is a small time drug dealer is asked to go to Mexico and bring drugs back into the US for his drug lord. Naturally things don't go very smoothly for them.
* ScarpiaUltimatum: The corrupt Mexican cop is looking for a "favor" in exchange for letting the RV full of marijuana pass. David starts to pressure Rose, but no, the cop [[NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat doesn't roll that way]].
** Subverted once it was revealed the thousand he asked before asking for the "favor" was pesos instead of dollars.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: Rose quits her job as a stripper when her boss wants her to start having sex with the customers.
* ShoutOut: David refers to the man who inspires his plan by using his family to avoid getting a speeding ticket as a "real life [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Flanders]]" due to his strong physical similarity to Ned Flanders.
* ShowSomeLeg: Why else have Jennifer Aniston play a stripper?
* SouthOfTheBorder: Part of the film takes place in Mexico, when David is attempting to pick up some drugs to take back to the US.
* SquirrelsInMyPants: Kenny is the victim when a tarantula crawls up his leg and into his shorts when he is driving. Kenny eventually gets bitten on his testicle.
* SteppingOutForAQuickCupOfCoffee: As a DEA agent, Don cannot allow them to leave once he finds out they are drug smuggling. Especially since they endangered his family with Pablo Chacon chasing them. He states that he will have to fulfill his duty of arresting them...just as soon as he finishes turning around to hug his family.
* [[HookerWithAHeartOfGold Stripper With A Heart of Gold]]: Rose
* TookALevelInBadass: Kenny. He changes from a dork who can't kiss a girl and doesn't know when to pick his fight to a man who floors a Mexican drug lord in one punch and stuns a girl to the point she loses all her anger to him before.
* TeamMom: Rose becomes this. She's GenreSavvy enough to realize Scotty-P is going to be a bad influence on Casey, and when Kenny gets bitten by a spider, she forces David to take him to a hospital to get treated.
* TeensAreShort: Inverted with Kenny, who is played by 5'11 Will Poulter. Played straight by the 5'2 Creator/EmmaRoberts.
* TooMuchInformation: The American tourists the Millers can't seem to get away from are having marital problems.
-->'''Edie''': I'm not as tight as I used to be. Sometimes Don just falls out. It's like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.
* TrashLanding: Subverted hilariously when David attempts this while running away from the three thugs. He drops his backpack down first, but it hits the lid, causing it to close, and he painfully lands on top of that instead of the softer garbage inside. Due to the pain, he's unable to move, and the three thugs then rob him blind.
* TrueCompanions: Despite not being related, David, Rose, Kenny, and Casey do start acting like a real family, bickering with each other and doing things together. David even comes back for them after he drives off when they find out how much he was really getting paid for the drug smuggling.
* UndersideRide: The Millers find a bunch of illegal immigrants hiding under their RV. They run away when they are discovered.
* VerbalTic: Scotty P., y'know what I'm sayin'? It really annoys David and Rose.
* WhatTheHellHero: David gets a couple of these near the end of the film when he begins to slide into {{Jerkass}} territory, such as when the other three find out he was going to get paid half a million dollars.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: Pablo does want to kill the Millers, but he is at least willing to listen to them plead for their lives first. Thankfully something happens that allows them to escape.
* WrongGenreSavvy: When David sees the plastic on Brad's floor, he thinks Brad is going to kill him. Turns out he was just having a new skylight installed.
--> '''Brad:''' ''"I've seen Series/{{Dexter}}."''
* YouHaveFailedMe: Surprisingly averted twice.
** Brad doesn't kill David outright for not paying him after he gets robbed by some random thugs. Instead he has him go on a little trip down to Mexico to bring some drugs back to him.
** Pablo doesn't kill One-Eye for his screw ups, and instead actually seems to care about his henchman, particularly as he keeps getting hurt during every encounter with the Millers after their first initial meeting.
