First came Film/TheMysterians, then Film/BattleInOuterSpace. Then in 1977 the loose trilogy of Toku alien invasion films was concluded with Great Planet War (惑星大戦争, Wakusei Daisensō), screening in the U.S. as The War in Space.

Hot on the heels of Creator/GeorgeLucas completely upending blockbuster cinema, leaps into SpaceOpera using the considerable box of tools available to them. Galactic empires, laser pistol battles, and zooming starfighters galore!

Essentially the last tokusatsu film Released by Toho until Film/TheReturnOfGodzilla, and thus the last of the informal "Showa" era.

!!This film contains examples of the following:

%% * AlienInvasion: That's what we're all here for, yes?
%% * CoolAirship: The Gohten
%% * DeathRay: Abounding, on both sides.
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: The Gohten's dock is hidden beneath an island.
* GoGoEnslavement: For all its obvious FollowTheLeader qualities to Star Wars, it was ahead of the curve on putting the captured female lead in revealing attire.
* LatexPerfection: A mild example, as the only point of the Yomi masks seems to be to conceal their blue skin.
%% * SpaceIsNoisy: Par for the course.
%% * SpaceRomans: The Yomi follow this aesthetic, for whatever reason.
* TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture: Released 1977, set in 1988.
%% * Venus-Shattering Kaboom: Literally how the movie ends.
