''Dumb and Dumber'' is a 1994 comedy film starring Jeff Daniels and JimCarrey, directed by the Farrelly Brothers. Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) is a friendly, though somewhat sadistic and ''more'' than somewhat dimwitted, limo driver who lives with his {{Heterosexual Life Partner|s}}, Harry Dunne (Daniels), a friendly, less sadistic than Lloyd, though still dimwitted dog groomer, in their Rhode Island apartment. Lloyd's life is turned around when he falls in love with Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly), a rich female client who leaves her briefcase at the airport. Lloyd talks Harry into going on a road trip to Colorado to return it. Thus, they hit the road in Harry's dog shaped, dog grooming van, unaware of what the briefcase is actually full of: ransom money, which means that Lloyd and Harry are being trailed by two hitmen, along with anybody else they piss off along the way.

Gained a {{Prequel}} in 2003, ''Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd'' which [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin details the meeting between the two]] during their high school years.

In 2012, it was announced a sequel would be filmed with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels returning along with the original directors, but appeared headed to DevelopmentHell with Carrey's soon-after departure, with the actor citing a lack of enthusiasm and support from the studio. In late 2012, however, Bobby Farrelly said Carrey was back on board (with Carrey starting to talk about the project himself soon after) and shooting would start in 2013 once Daniels finished his commitment to ''TheNewsroom''.

Provides examples of:
* AnticipatoryBreathSpray: Except he misses his mouth entirely, causing EyeScream in the guy standing directly beside him.
* AnimatedAdaptation: The Hanna-Barbera-produced ''Dumb and Dumber'' cartoon in 1995, which featured a [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything female beaver]] named Kitty as the [[StraightMan Straight Animal]] to Lloyd and Harry.
** A female beaver named Kitty. Now there's a ParentalBonus.
* AntiHero: Both Lloyd and Harry count as Type I's
* AssholeVictim: Mental.
* AttemptedRape / NearRapeExperience: Sea Bass attempts it on Lloyd.
* BadOmenAnecdote: Lloyd tricks Sea Bass and his friends into picking up Lloyd and Harry's tab at a restaurant. They rush off in their van before Sea Bass can catch them. While on the road:
--> '''Harry''': That was great! Did you come up with that yourself?
--> '''Lloyd''': No, I saw it in a movie once.
--> '''Harry''': Let me guess, they get away scot free?
--> '''Lloyd''': No! Even better, they catch up with a guy a few miles down the road and slit his throat. It was ''good''...
* BeatStillMyHeart / AndShowItToYou: During his dream sequence, Lloyd rips the Kung-fu Chef's heart out of his chest and shows it to him (before putting it in a doggy bag and giving it back).
* BigDamnHeroes: Harry has two of these moments: in the gas station bathroom where he foils Sea Bass' AttemptedRape of Lloyd and again in the hotel near the end [[spoiler:when he's accompanied by the FBI]].
** Although the first was unintentional.
* BookEnds: Lloyd grabbing Harry by the head and saying "Do you realize what you've done?!"
* BriefcaseFullOfMoney: It drives the plot.
* BrickJoke: The woman that Harry offends at the gas station shows up later in the film [[spoiler:and reveals herself to be a FBI agent]].
** The blind kid Lloyd sold the dead bird to appeared in tears in a news report on TV much later in the film.
--->'''Mary''': "Who are these sick people?"
** In one of the alternate endings, the blind kid-dead parakeet joke would have been taken even further: [[spoiler:in this ending it turns out that the blind kid is the nephew of Lloyd and Harry's butler at the hotel in Aspen [[FromBadToWorse and Lloyd and Harry were asked to babysit him.]]]]
* BulletProofVest: When [[spoiler: Harry]] is shot by [[spoiler: Nicholas]], it's revealed he's wearing one of these. Lampshaded by Lloyd when he asks, "But what if he shot you in the face?"
* ButtMonkey: Oh so many. Mental, Sea Bass, the blind kid, and Harry and Lloyd themselves.
* CheckPlease
* ChekhovsGunman: See BrickJoke.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: ''So'' many times.
** "You mean, not good like... one out of a hundred?" "I'd say more like one out of a million." "...so you're telling me there's a chance!" "Husband!? Wait a minute... what's all that one-in-a-million talk?"
* CoolCar: The Shaggin' Wagon. They even have it back in the cartoon.
* {{Corpsing}}: During the "Most Annoying Sound" scene (which was ad-libbed by Jim Carrey), it's obvious that the actor who plays Mental is trying very hard not to laugh.
** Before the camera cuts to a close-up of Mike Starr (Mental), you can see Jeff Daniels start to laugh.
* DiabolusExMachina: [[spoiler:Not only does Mary have a husband, Harry and Lloyd stupidly turn down the job opportunity of a lifetime that involves rubbing oil all over supermodels.]]
* DinerBrawl: Averted. Sea Bass just spits in Harry's burger, and then gets conned.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:Harry appears to have been shot dead by the BigBad near the end, but it turns out he was wearing a BulletProofVest.]]
* TheDitz: Lloyd and Harry personify this trope.
* DownerEnding: Subverted.
** They had planned on shooting an alternate ending where they got on the bus, but JimCarrey disagreed, arguing that Lloyd was [[TooDumbToLive too stupid to consider it]].
* DoubleStandardRapeMaleOnMale
* TheDragon: Mental is this to [[spoiler:Nicholas]].
** Shay is this to Mental.
* DrowningMySorrows: Lloyd does this when he believes that Mary stood him up.
* DyingCurse: The duo accidentally poisons a hitman chasing them, and he dies screaming "You... son of a bitch!" And Harry gets sad.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: "You don't kill people you don't know. That's a rule!"
* EvilLaugh: Lloyd's sadistic laugh after exacting revenge on Harry.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Some people have found that, rather than being funny, the movie is just... dumb.
* ExtremeDoormat: Harry. Throughout the movie, he comes off as a little smarter and more sensible than Lloyd but for the most part goes along with everything Lloyd does partly because he's just very passive.
* {{Fanservice}}: Mary during Lloyd's dream sequence.
* GreasySpoon
* GroinAttack: Lloyd's dream sequence includes an extremely exaggerated one.
* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: Sea Bass wears a cap that says "Wine Em, Dine Em, 69 Em". Made all the more ironic by the fact that he solicits gay sex in gas station bathrooms.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Probably some of the most iconic examples.
* HilarityEnsues
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:Mental dies after accidentally taking rat poison pills that he intended to spike Harry and Lloyd's drinks with.]]
* HypocriticalHumor: "Can't be too careful, lots of bad drivers out there."
* IconicOutfit: The paired blue and orange tuxedos.
* [[IAteWhat I Drank What?]]: The scene where a cop pulls Lloyd and Harry over. He asks for them to give him their "beer", which is actually Lloyd's urine. He drinks it, much to his displeasure after doing so.
* ImagineSpot: Lloyd has two: one while driving, which causes him to almost crash, and one at the end in a faux-TwistEnding, wherein he [[spoiler:blows away Mary's fiancee]].
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: "Harry! You're alive! And you're a horrible shot!"
* IncrediblyLamePun: "Life's a fragile thing, Harry. One minute you're chewing on a burger, the next minute you're dead meat."
* IndulgentFantasySegue: Near the end when Lloyd [[spoiler: imagines killing Mary's husband]].
* ILikeThoseOdds. Qualifies as sort of a SugarWiki/{{Heartwarming Moment|s}}.
-->'''Lloyd:''' I want to ask you a question... straight out, flat out... and I want you to give me an honest answer. What do you think the chances of [[FreudianSlip a guy like you and a girl like me]]... ending up together?
-->'''Mary:''' Well Lloyd... that's difficult to say... you really don't...
-->'''Lloyd:''' Hit me! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
-->'''Mary:''' Not good.
-->'''Lloyd:''' ''(gulping)'' You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
-->'''Mary:''' I'd say more like... one out of a million.
-->'''Lloyd:''' ''({{beat}}, then grins happily)'' So you're telling me there's a ''chance''.
* {{Jerkass}}: Both are stone stupid, but while Harry is well meaning and even kind in his own bumbling way, Lloyd comes off as rather sadistic and highly mean-spirited, and not always obliviously.
* LaxativePrank: Lloyd does it to Harry as revenge, since he supposedly stole Mary from him.
* LethallyStupid: Lloyd and Harry can be destructive. They got to kill Mental and a rare bird. Lloyd also caused a car accident in the beginning and even poisonned Harry.
* LineOfSightName: When Harry and Lloyd get to Aspen, they decide to look Mary's name up on the local phone book (never mind she was vacationing there). Since Lloyd can't remember her surname (only that it starts with S), Harry suggests he check her briefcase. He looks at it and immediately shoots, "Samsonite".
* {{Malaproper}}: "I have a rapist's wit."
** "She sent me a John Deere letter."
*** "If I know Mary as well as I think I do, she'll invite us right in for tea and strumpets."
* ManlyGay: Sea Bass.
* MillionToOneChance: See ILikeThoseOdds above.
* MistakenForGay: When Lloyd and Harry stay at a honeymoon hotel on their cross-country road trip, Mental mentions it to Nicholas.
* MostAnnoyingSound: [[invoked]]The hitchhiker scene. The {{Trope Namer|s}}.
* MsFanservice: Rachel Nichols in the prequel.
* TheNineties
* ObfuscatingStupidity: The hitmen think Harry and Lloyd are doing this - the guy thinks a letter to the gas man is to him because of his stomach problems, and so on.
* OhCrap: Two instances, both with the same ScareChord. The first is when Lloyd is in a gas station bathroom, looks at some graffiti left by [[spoiler:Sea Bass]] and realizes he's right on time for "manly love". The second is when Harry suffers the effects of Lloyd's LaxativePrank and discovers that the toilet is broken.
** How about the look on Lloyd's face when [[spoiler:Harry told him that he thinks his ex-girlfriend Freda was seeing another guy...]]
* [[OneOfTheKids Two of the Kids]]: Harry and Lloyd.
* OnlySaneWoman: Mary
* PerverseSexualLust: Lloyd's Aspen dream.
* PlayingAgainstType: Jeff Daniels
* PopStarComposer: Todd Rundgren.
* PottyEmergency: Happens twice. Once to Lloyd, which leads to the "[[IAteWhat I drank what?]]" incident, and again with Harry, when Lloyd spikes his drink with laxative.
* {{Prequel}}: ''Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd''.
* PsychopathicManchild: Arguably, Lloyd.
* RagsToRiches: Harry and Lloyd go from a couple of unemployed losers to high-society snobs after finding out what's in Mary's briefcase.
* RoadMovie
* RuleOfFunny: The ''whole'' film.
* SexualKarma: Averted.
* ShoutOut: The protagonists Harry and Lloyd are named after silent film star Harold Lloyd.
* StalkerWithACrush: Lloyd to Mary.
* StealthPun: Lloyd's last name is Christmas. If he and Mary got married, her name would be [[PunnyName Mary Christmas]]. The [[UnratedEdition unrated version]] explains the joke.
* TackyTuxedo: Harry and Lloyd don some when they attend the Snow Owl Benefit.
* ThatCameOutWrong: "Mary... I desperately want to make love to a schoolboy!"
* ToiletHumor: One of which actually involves a (broken) toilet.
* TongueOnTheFlagpole: [[WhatAnIdiot "Oh, look, frost."]]
* TrailerSpoof: The trailer for ''Dumb and Dumberer'' disguised itself as a trailer for ''Literature/TheHobbit'', leaving every member of the audience sorely pissed.
* YouAnsweredYourOwnQuestion:
-->'''Harry:''' Freda and I had such a wonderful time. But right after the blue, she send me a John Dear letter.\\
'''Lloyd:''' Did she give you any reason?\\
'''Harry:''' Yeah I called her up. She gave a bunch of crap about not me listening to her or something... I don't know I wasn't paying attention.
