->''"Shit just got real."''

''Bad Boys'' is a 1995 action comedy film, directed by Creator/MichaelBay, and produced by Don Simpson and JerryBruckheimer, producers of ''Film/TopGun'' and ''Film/BeverlyHillsCop'', and starring Martin Lawrence and WillSmith. The film also spawned a 2003 sequel, ''Bad Boys II'', which in turn spawned a video game adaptation, ''Bad Boys: Miami Takedown''.

Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Smith) are best friends and detectives in the narcotics division of the Miami-Dade Police Department. They have just completed the biggest bust of their career, having confiscated about 100 million dollars worth of heroin. Which would have probably earned them an award or two...if the heroin wasn't immediately stolen from supposedly secure police vault. Now the two partners have some investigation to do, while the Internal Affairs Office is threatening to shut down their entire division and Howard, [[DaChief their chief]], is getting desperate for a breakthrough. Their main suspect is Fouchet (Tcheky Karyo), a French drug-lord active in their area. Their only lead to him is Julie Mott (Tea Leoni) who recently witnessed her best friend get killed on his orders.

The film was a box office hit, earning $141,407,024 worldwide. With about 66 million earned in the United States market, it was the 26th most successful film of its year. Critically it was considered a failure, mostly for being rather formulaic. It helped reinvigorate the buddy cop genre.
----
!! The movies contain examples of:
* ActorAllusion: In the first movie, Julie asked Marcus if he "felt funny" and he answers "Well, I'm not a comedian..."
* ArmedAltruism: Syd's rescue in ''Bad Boys 2''.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: At the end of the confrontation with the convenience store clerk.
-->'''Mike:''' Now back up, put the gun down, and get me a pack of Tropical Fruit Bubblicious.
-->'''Marcus:''' And some Skittles.
* AxCrazy: Fouchet, the villain in the first movie. His plan seemed to involve killing everything he came into contact with.
** Johnny Tapia in the sequel. His idea of conducting a business deal is to have one member of the negotiating party ''chopped up in his mother's kitchen and stuffed into a tortilla bin''. It's his idea of "leverage". If that does not work, he'll gun for their families.
* BackToBackBadasses: The opening of ''Bad Boys 2''.
* BigLittleMan: A hacker is helping the heroes and gets into an argument with one of them. When he stands up to start shouting, it's revealed that he's much taller than "the short one" who's arguing with him.
* BlackAndNerdy: The convict who hacks into databases for the duo. Complete with Urkel glasses. By the sequel he's apparently been released and is either a civilian or got hired by the police.
* BulletTime: Occurs in ''2'' during the opening shootout with TheKlan which ends with Marcus getting ShotInTheAss.
* ButtMonkey: Marcus, who is not pleased of being the one getting the short end of the stick. [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] right at the beginning of the first movie.
--> '''Marcus''': Why do I always get the big thick muthafuckas?
* TheCameo: Dan Marino in the second movie; the boys steal the Caddy he was test driving and later remark that "he should definitely get this car -- well, not ''this'' one, I'm gonna fuck this one up, but one just like it".
** CreatorCameo: Before they take Marino's car, Marcus attempts to commandeer a crappy hatchback driven by Michael Bay himself.
* CarFu: Attempted by the bad guys in the second movie's freeway chase, by means of sending cars off a commandeered car carrier at Mike and Marcus' vehicle.
--> '''Mike''': These dudes are off the chain!
* ChaseScene: It's not a Creator/MichaelBay movie without one. It's also not a Creator/MichaelBay movie if something doesn't get trashed. Like a boat or a whole slum, for instance.
* ClusterFBomb: More so in the sequel than the first.
** In a specific scene in the first film, Mike gets into one about why he's not just a "rich kid playing cop".
--->'''Mike:''' "Fuck you, and fuck them, and fuck ''everybody'' that's got a problem with Mike Lowrey!"
--->'''Marcus:''' "I love you, man."
--->'''Mike:''' "Fuck you, Marcus!"
* ColdOpen: Both movies have a scene before the title.
* CoolCar:
** In the original, Mike Lowrey's 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 (less than 1,000 were made) and the AC Cobra 427 driven by Fouchet in the finale car chase.
** In the sequel, Lowrey's Ferrari 575M Maranello (Michael Bay's own 550 Maranello was used in the freeway chase sequence) and a 2003 Buick Blackhawk concept.
* ContinuityNod: "Now ''that's'' how you 'sposed to drive/shoot! ''From now on, that's how you drive/shoot!''"
** The aforementioned computer hacker, who shows up as a convict in the first film and a police consultant/employee in the second.
* CowboyCop:
** Lampshaded by their boss, Capt. Howard in a hilarious scene in the sequel:
---> I can't believe you guys. Do you get up in the morning, call each other up - "Good morning, Marcus." "Good morning, Mike." "How you doin'?" "A'ight." "So, how are we going to fuck up the captain's life today?" "Gee, I don't know, I don't know... Ooh, look! Over there. Let's kill three fat people and leave them on the street?"
** Captain Howard in the first movie has a similar line:
---> "Ho! ''What'' did I say? Did you hear what I said? I heard what I said 'cause I was standing here when I said it! I ''told'' you. I ''told'' you to secure a witness. ''Not'' to shoot up a neighbourhood! ''Not'' to do another dead body! Just get the dope back and do it ''quietly''."
** Also mocked in the first movie when after revealing his plan to catch the bad guy towards the end of the film, Mike exclaims: "My shit always works sometimes!"
* CupHolders: Marcus complains about Mike's Porsche not having any, which really gets Mike's goat.
* DaChief: Captain Howard.
* TheDanza: Theresa Randle as Theresa Burnett.
* DeadpanSnarker: Julie.
--> "Gee, Julie, what have you been up to the last couple days? Nothing. Just hanging out, handcuffed to steering wheels."
** Capt. Howard, during one of his calmer moments. Which is rare.
---> "What is your job description?" (points at the two protagonists) "Yeah, you two. What is your job description? T.N.T. - Tactical Narcotics team. Keyword - ''tactical.'' It means '''finesse'' and ''subtlety'' in achieving the goal.' Tell me, gentlemen, what was subtle about your work today?" (said while next to a screen with an exploding car from the shootout Mike and Marcus were just in.)
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The discussion between Mike and Marcus in the sequel about the aftermath of Mike shooting Marcus in the butt immediately turns into one big gay joke.
* TheDragon: Roberto in the second film (until he [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness outlived his usefulness]]), and then Carlos.
* EmbarrassingOldPhoto: Marcus' fro.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Mike and Marcus fighting in their very first scene, and then using that fight to get the drop on some would-be robbers.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: There's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhxmszpKSyQ Bay's signature 360 steadicam shot]]... and then there's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUZ9qAOaN5Q this scene]]. See also OrbitalShot.
* [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas Even A Bad Man Loves His Mama and Daughter]]: Johnny Tapia.
* EvilIsHammy: Any bad guy who appears in each movie has the tendencies to do this - most notably Johnny Tapia.
* ExiledToTheCouch: Marcus in the first movie.
* FatAndSkinny: In Bad Boys I, the two carjackers and Fouchet's two [[TheDragon dragons]].
* FlashedBadgeHijack: {{Parodied| Trope}} in the sequel, where an attempt to commandeer a rundown car leads Marcus to get yelled at and told to commandeer a better car. See also TheCameo.
* FrenchJerk: Fouchet again.
* FunWithAcronyms: The '''T'''actical '''N'''arcotics '''T'''eam in ''2''.
* GunsAkimbo: Mike Lowrey.
* HairTriggerTemper: Fouchet, the villain of the first movie. Never does one of his scenes go by without him getting pissed about something.
** Johnny Tapia basically has two personality modes; seething anger and UnstoppableRage. Meanwhile, Marcus and Captain Howard attend anger management classes, and it still doesn't keep them from yelling at the top of their lungs whenever something goes wrong.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler: Johnny Tapia, after receiving a headshot delivered by Marcus, drops himself on a minefield.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Prevalent in the sequel.
--> '''Mike:''' We ride together. We die together. [[TitleDrop Bad Boys]] for life.
* IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer
* InnocentInnuendo: See DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything.
** In the first movie, Marcus did not pick the right time to call home to check on his wife and Mike, sparking his jealousy-driven actions in the next scene.
* InterrogationByVandalism: In the sequel, Marcus and Mike get the location of the Haitian gang's hideout by doing this to Icepick's shop.
* IntoxicationEnsues: While searching the mortuary for evidence, Marcus accidentally ingests two hits of ecstasy. Right before going to Captain Howard's house to get a warrant to go after Tapia.
** Played for laughs at first, but later Howard has to call experts in order to figure out what to do to keep Marcus's brain from frying. Turns out, a cold shower works wonders.
* KillItWithFire: Both of [[spoiler: [[TheDragon The Dragons]]]] in the first film die this way.
* KnightOfCerebus: Fouchet. There's absolutely '''nothing funny''' about him, and every time he appears, the film dramatically loses its comedic beats.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: Mike is really excited when he meets Dan Marino.
* TheKlan: Mike and Marcus shoot it out with a chapter of the Klan in ''2'''s first major shootout.
* LandMineGoesClick: The ending of the sequel.
* TheLoinsSleepTonight: Marcus suffers a bout of this in ''2'' after getting ShotInTheAss. He only gets better after accidentally ingesting two hits of X (see above).
* {{Lzherusskie}}: PeterStormare.
* MisplacedNamesPoster: The poster for ''2''.
* MoeGreeneSpecial: Mike gives one to an unfortunate gangbanger that tries to peek through a bullet hole.
* MoodWhiplash: Max's friend calls the PD crying about [[spoiler:Max's murder]]. At which point, the chief of police and Marcus get into an argument about how to impersonate Mike.
* [[MuggingTheMonster Mugging The Miami Cops]]: The two carjackers at the beginning of the first movie had the bad luck of choosing to jack one with Mike and Marcus inside:
-->'''Mike:''' Let me tell you how bad a day you're having: right now you're jacking a couple of cops.
* NonIdleRich: Mike chose to become a cop despite being born into wealth. This became a DiscussedTrope when Marcus mentioned everyone thought Mike was "a rich kid playing cop".
-->"What, I'm supposed to ''apologize'' for my family leaving me money? All I ''ever'' wanted to be was a cop! I go out there and take it to the max everyday! I'm the first guy through the door and I'm always the last one to leave the crime scene! So you know what? Fuck you, and fuck them, and fuck ''everybody'' that's got a problem with Mike Lowrey!"
* OhCrap: After realizing their [[InnocentInnuendo post-"shot-in-the-ass"]] [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything conversation]] in the tech store was being transmitted on a TV in the main lobby.
* OnlyInMiami: The heroes are a couple of {{cowboy cop}}s working for the Miami PD.
* OrbitalShot:
** In the original, after Mike saves Marcus from being hit by the taxi during Julie's kidnapping.
** In ''Bad Boys II'':
--->"Shit just got ''real''."
* PlausibleDeniability: A bunch of {{Cowboy Cop}}s, SWAT and DEA agents are about to sneak into Cuba to [[StormingTheCastle hit the home]] of a drug dealer who kidnapped one of the cops' sister. The CIA has been wanting an excuse to take him down, so naturally they give them a few nudges in the right direction. That's not a Black Op, it's [[PapaWolf Family Business]]!
* PreMortemOneLiner: Marcus in the first movie: "You forgot your ''boarding pass!''"
* ProductPlacement: The Cadillac in the second movie, coincidentally the same one used in ''Film/TheMatrix Reloaded'', which co-stars Will Smith's wife, Jada.
* RareGuns: In the original, Fouchet attempts to pull out a four-barrel COP .357 Derringer, which is no longer in production.
* RasputinianDeath: Fouchet's fat henchman in the first film. He gets shot in the chest by Lowrey with a shotgun, falls backwards into a high voltage transformer which electrocutes him, and the resulting sparks ignite the jet fuel at his feet, setting him on fire.
* ReadingYourRights: Marcus rattles these off during a car chase. The villain, of course, is in the other car.
-->'''Marcus:''' You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do will be held against you in a court of law.
-->'''Mike:''' What are you doing?
-->'''Marcus:''' (determined) Getting it out of the way!
* RealityIsUnrealistic: Okay, so apparently our Bad Boys happen to have a friend, who happens to have a brother, who happens to be a commander in an anti-Castro militia named Alpha 66, who happen to have enough guns and bombs to assault a fortified mansion in Cuba. In fact, there really is an Alpha 66, and they really have stocked up enough firepower to launch a big hit-and-run in Cuba, as they're storing up for an eventual invasion.
* RuleOfThree: In the second movie. Three "Oh, shit"s in 12 seconds in the scene where the duo visits Captain Howard's house.
* RuthlessForeignGangsters: The very French Fouchet and the Cuban Johnny Tapia.
* SassyBlackWoman: As if the electronics store incident [[MistakenForGay wasn't]] [[HoYay awkward]] [[InnocentInnuendo enough...]]
-->'''Indignant Mother:''' In front of my babies, you've got porno and homo shows up in here? What kind of freak-ass store is this?! (Mike and Marcus walk by) Mmm... [[ValuesDissonance and YOU two motherfuckers need Jesus.]] (beat) [[HypocriticalHumor Cover your ears, baby.]]
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: In ''Bad Boys II'', Marcus' sister is kidnapped by the drug lord and taken to Cuba. Mike and Marcus intend to go rescue her themselves, but are then aided by a loose-knit group of law enforcement agents who decide to risk violating international law.
--> '''DEA Agent Snell''': We don't know you, but you look like you're about to do something stupid. I'm in.
** Which the CIA gets wind about and decides to make into an impromptu Black Op with a little discreet assistance.
* SeanConneryIsAboutToShootYou: The first movie's poster has Will Smith pointing a gun toward the viewer. In the poster for the second movie, it's Martin Lawrence who's taking aim.
* ShotInTheAss: Yeah. Marcus gets shot in the ass during ''2'''s opening shootout, leading to a series of awkward and badly worded moments later on.
* StormingTheCastle: In the sequel, Mike and Marcus (along with DEA, CIA and law enforcement agents) storm Tapia's villa in Cuba to rescue Marcus' sister before the local government catches them.
* StuffBlowingUp: It wouldn't be a Creator/MichaelBay movie without at least a few gratuitous explosions.
** The second movie ratchets it up and ends with [[spoiler:Mike, Marcus, and several other [=TNT=] officers going to Cuba to rescue Marcus' sister who the BigBad has kidnapped. Why does this belong here? THEY WRECK A SHANTYTOWN-SLASH-CRACK LAB ON THE WAY THERE, AND SLAM INTO THE US NAVY BASE, WHERE THE BIG BAD GETS HIS SHIT RUINED BY A MINE]].
** Before that they blow up a mansion -- a ''real mansion'' [[http://priceypads.com/29599/bad-boys-2-mansion-demolition/ that the owners didn't want and figured some lucky director ought to have some fun with it.]]
* SuicideByCop: Fouchet tries to goad Mike into doing this for him, but he only gets killed after he tries to pull a gun on Marcus.
* SwordOverHead
* TakeFive:
-->'''Marcus''': Mike. Go downstairs and have a Coke and a smile.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Lampshaded in-universe:
-->'''Store Clerk:''' ''[pointing a gun at Mike and Marcus]'' I blow you! And I blow you!
-->'''Marcus:''' "Blow me?" What the fuck? Naw, naw.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: "Hey, freeze, bitch!"
** "''You'' freeze, '''bitch'''."
* ThoseTwoGuys: The two Hispanic detectives Sanchez and Ruiz in the first movie, then Vargas and Reyes in the second.
* TimeForPlanB: in ''Bad Boys II'', this involves driving a Humvee through a house.
-->'''Mike:''' Plan B did ''not'' have this big-ass gun in it!
* TookALevelInBadass: Both of the main characters in the second film, especially Mike.
* TwerpSweating: And ''how''. Probably the best example ever in film history occurs in the sequel when Megan's date arrives.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: Discussed in-universe for humor. On Captain Howard and Captain Sinclair having yet another argument:
-->'''Mike:''' They should just bone and get that shit over with.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment
* VillainousBreakdown: Johnny Tapia has one in the sequel when [[spoiler: the team lead by Marcus and Mike blow his mansion up]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: Mike and Marcus are a solid Type 2.
* VomitingCop: Marcus in both movies.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Mainly the first movie, which begins with the duo bitching at each other.
* YouAreNotAlone: See ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight above.
--> '''Mike''': We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life.
