Doctor Who has a long history of fan-fiction in non-text formats, as well as a long and proud history of promoting fans into ShowRunner status. The AudioPlay/DoctorWhoAudioVisuals cassette tapes, for example, were circulated from 1985 to 1991 by Creator/NicholasBriggs and other future Promoted Fanboys -- who now run the official AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho and have adapted many of the stories into canon.

The Doctor Who Project by Bob Furnell and others
* Recommended by @/Clendy82
* Synopsis: Perhaps the largest and longest running Doctor Who fan fiction series in existence. Running continuously since 1999, the Doctor Who Project has had twelve seasons and counting of high-quality prose, ranging from short stories all the way to epic length novels. The first two stories star the Seventh Doctor before he regenerates and the series continues with an original "Eighth" Doctor onwards. For fans of older Doctors, there is a "Brief Encounters" section featuring stories starring the television Doctors with elements of the main [=TDWP=] series. Today the series stars the [=TDWP=] Tenth Doctor and continues to provide the very best in new Doctor Who stories with an old school feel.
* Comments: With a series of such breadth and variety as the Doctor Who Project, there are going to be a lot of hits and misses as far as individual readers' preferences are concerned. Stories like "Nine Days" and "Journey's End" in the [=TDWP=] Ninth Doctor's era are held up as particular common favorites, though. To help deal with the fact that a dozen seasons' worth of near novel length stories can lead to a bit of ArchivePanic, the series editors have released a comprehensive series bible giving details on every published story, including trivia and plot synopses,

The "This Time Round" Archive by various.
* Recommended by @/DaibhidC
* Now has its own Trope Page
* Synopsis: A MetaFic series set in a pub outside Doctor Who continuity, where the characters go between stories. And the surrounding town. And the creche, where the SpinoffBabies stay and have a storybook that forces their adult counterparts to act out fairy tales. And the HighSchoolAU, Primary/Elementary School AU, and Retirement Home AU.
* Comments: Particularly recommended is B.K. Willis's To Die For series in which, free from the burden of her canonical personality, Nyssa is reimagined as an inventive psychopath with a grudge on Adric (who keeps coming BackFromTheDead). It's much better than that makes it sound.

* Synopsis: A webcomic that is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. Ten Doctors, many companions, and just about every enemy from the TV series that wasn't dead at the end of their arc.
* Comments: A fun read, although a little slow at times.
** Seconded by cg12345. Very much.
** @/UncloudedTJ: Very well done but if you want to read through it faster try the second link as it's faster to download them and read rather than use the archive.
** Also recommended by @/DigiFlame. Continuity Porn in its most concentrated form.
** @/Revelo: I also recommend this, really well written, fantastic art and a TARDIS full of lore and continuity porn with some awesome and heartwarming parts thrown in too.
** @/Scionofgrace: Recommended wholeheartedly! So many, many awesome moments.
** @/YYZ: Also to be recommended is one of Morris' subsequent stories, which features the Third Doctor in Elizabethan England.
*** I don't have a troper page yet, so I'll just sign using my real initials for now (and I'll change it once I make one), but I, ZT, agree, and would like to say that the other Doctor Who stories Rich has done, despite being crossovers with series I'm unfamiliar with, are awesome as well. Also, I feel that "the Ten Doctors" is possibly the greatest Doctor Who story ever.
** Teorwyn: This is the story that introduced me to the Whoniverse. Even though I didn't have any idea what was going on when I started, the story, convoluted as it was, let me pick things up as I went along and left me wanting more. HIGHLY recommended.
** Finister2: So good you'd think it was in canon.
** MrThorfan64: One of my favourite stories in any medium. Better then most Doctor Who stories.
** darksecret: For New Who fans, this is a great introduction to the Classic Doctors. Definitely worth a read.

The Crossover Adventures by Aron Toman
* Recommended by @/SilentHunter
* Synopsis: Basically a bunch of audio plays where the Doctor (played by Toman) and some original companions, plus Frobisher, as well as characters from Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer, Franchise/Scream and Franchise/TheMuppets.
** @/SilentHunter has only listened to "A Time Lord in Prince Henry's Court", a humorous tale set in 16th-century France, but it's a highly recommended tale of forbidden love, apples and Leonardo da Vinci.

Talk To The Hand Series by Wynter Eyez
* Recommended by Fiasco
* Synopsis: A hilarious series that details the adventures of 10.5 (aka Handy, 10th Doctor Duplicate) living in Pete's world and coming to terms with his strange genetic quirks while having fantastic and hilarious adventures. It starts with
** 1) Crossed Wires, which is followed by
** a Christmas special: A Glorious Mess
** 2) Straight Up With a Twist
** 3) This Immortal Coil
** 4) Romantic Entanglements
** 5) Coming Undone
** 6) Why Torchwood Banned Recreational BodySwapping

* Synopsis: Explorations of the Doctor's enduring impact on the universe, funny bits that feel like they were lifted right out of the show, fix fics you never knew you needed...everything you could ask for from a fanfic writer, really.
* Comments: Her individual fics have been recommended often enough on this page already, but everything by Lyricwritesprose is worth reading. The stories feel like they were lifted out of canon, the characterization is always spot-on, and the writing is top-notch. Be sure to take a look at the TARDIS-centric pieces!

Crystal Rose of Pollux
* Recommended by: Zelda12343
* Synopsis: Her Doctor Who Fanfics, which range from short drabbles to multi-chapter fics, focus mostly on the Second Doctor and Jamie. The full timeline of her works can be found here on Tumblr.
* Comments: I cannot recommend her writing enough. Her characterization is flawless, not just for the Second Doctor and Jamie, but for every canon character they come into with. In spite of her rather timey-wimey writing, which could potentially cause a snarl in the timeline, is excellently handled. Her plots are very engaging, and often quite funny. Best of all, however, is that fact that pretty much every chapter involves some heartwarming moment or other, often courtesy of Jamie.
* Now has a tropes page.

betawho
* Recommended by: @/SanDemonMax
* Synopsis: An author who specializes in short Doctor Who fics following Eleven and company, with occasional multi-chapter fics, and/or fics following other Doctors.
* Comments: When I say short, I mean short. One of his fics, titled Prey, is exactly 49 words long. 25 of those are his Once A Fanfic thanks yous at the end. And yet even at just 24 words for the story proper, it's a brilliant read.

Dobby's Socks
* Recommended by Katherine-Sanderson
* Synopsis: A team of three authors that write really, really good Doctor Who fics with both really sad and really heartwarming moments. There are a mix of both One-shots and longer fics. Mainly about the 10th and 11th Doctors.

yonderdarling
* Reccomended by NCToni
* Comments: An impressively prolific, gloriously in-character Twelve/Missy writer, exploring the good (domesticity, cuddling, fondness, and bickering) the bad (conflicting, well, everything) and the ugly (astonishingly well-written smut) of their relationship. Everywhere from the humor of being walked in on (by a perfectly characterized Bill and Nardole, no less) to the heartwrenching reality of the decisions they have to make.

* Synopsis: The world has ended. This is a lie. Too bad no one told Rose, Jack, and the Doctor.
* Comments: Not only one of the best pieces of fanfic I've read in this fandom, but possibly of all time. The plot, the UnreliableNarrator, and the ending... to say too much about it would be to spoil it, but it's a must-read. The Doctors' Mission Statement by nichelle.hp

Psycho Savior, qu'est-ce que c'est? by kalima
* Recommended by cg12345, @/MsShaw, @/Nightsky, @/LongLiveHumour, Tropers/CaptainColdCutCliche
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: The Ninth Doctor rescues a screwed-up suicidal girl, and rescues a living piece of architecture.
* Comments: This story features a pretty dark take on the Ninth Doctor, who was never exactly a sunshiney kind of guy to begin with. Fortunately the writer never forgets that the Doctor is, in fact, a Big Damn Hero which keeps the story firmly on the side of pretty damn good. Great acidic dialogue between nine and the girl (Emily), as well.
** Seconded ten times over by Tropers/CaptainColdCutCliche. This fic needs to be read. The dialogue is wonderful, and Nine's characterization is just incredible.

Flowers on Fire by etherati
* Recommended by Loki, seacloudsky
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Author's summary: They burn, in the darkness and the light, circling round each other like binary stars just on the edge of nova. They both burn, but they do not burn the same. Theta, Koschei, and their successors.
* Comments: Long one-shot, spanning from academy era to new Who series three finale. All I can say is really really good. Really.
** Seconded by seacloudsky. This fic is a nice study for those interested in the Master's and the Doctor's relationship, with a clear depiction of the author's interpretation of Gallifreyian society.

The Women by Nostalgia (Mentions of femslash, potentially upsetting, abortion)
* Recommended by Molly, @/AnonymousMcCartneyfan
* Status: Complete
* Pairing(s): Martha/Lucy (but not the focus)
* Synopsis: It is so sort that I can't really give any explanation without spoiling it.
* Comments: It is a complete tearjerker and is so well written.
** @/AnonymousMcCartneyfan: Risking spoilage: Lucy Saxon is mentally unstable after "The Last of the Time Lords." Martha Jones tries to help.

After Life by Amy Wolf
* Recommended by @/DMint, @/AnonymousMcCartneyfan, @/Lullabee, @/DigiFlame, @/Nightsky
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Rationally speaking, you know youíre not dead. Also, there arenít eight other people in here, and you arenít trapped in Jean-Paul Sartreís vision of Hell. A JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind during the early hours of his regeneration into the 10th Doctor, After Life is told from the perspective of the 9th Doctor. that looks into how the 9th Doctor blames himself and the 8th Doctor for the Time War, his previous eight selves' light treatment of the Daleks, and how the 9th Doctor tries to learn to forgive himself and the Eighth Doctor for destroying Gallifrey.
* Comments: An awesome read. Written in Second Person POV... and it works.
** @/DigiFlame: Each chapter presents something unique.

A Different World by Lady Clark-Weasley of Books (AU)
* Recommended by Ryan Lohner
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In "Doomsday", it's the Doctor who gets trapped in the parallel world, leaving Rose alone. The TARDIS makes her into a Time Lord and she picks up the show's canon from there.
* Comments: For most of season three this is a pretty rudimentary AU fic with Rose largely just cut-and-pasted into the Doctor's place. However, when the Master shows up the story suddenly clicks into high gear as we get a great and truly different take on the events of those episodes. It largely stays that way from then on.
** Quite contrived, a lot is unexplained, and the style feels a bit silly and forced.

From This Day To The Ending Of The World, by Ice Blue Nothing
* Recommended by @/Nightsky
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: The TARDIS, with the freshly regenerated Ninth Doctor inside, crashes onto a planet at the end of the war. Nine tries to put his life back together.
* Comments: What's that, you say? You want an Eight -> Nine regeneration story? That is completely awesome? Here you go, then.
** Seconded by @/MasterFerret - This is the best fic, by far, that I've read of Nine's regeneration. The Time War sequence is beautifully written, and the work as a whole seamlessly transitions from Classic to New.

Frozen Hearts by bibliophile1887
* Recommended by @/MakiP, Vorel_Laraek, @/Nightsky, seacloudsky
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Peri comes to terms with the Doctor's new incarnation while the Doctor tries to keep her from freezing to death.
* Comments: It's quite lovely, a bit angsty, but very good; it really shows how much the Doctor cares about his companions, even after regenerating. I'm not sure if it is friendship or shipping, could be either.
** All of what the above says and more. Peri and the Doctor's relationship is portrayed beautifully, as is the Doctor's regeneration.

The Game by Vic Taylor
* Recommended by: Purple Bouncy Ball
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: The Doctor and the Master play the Game, because by now, it is all they have left.
* Comments: This is a short oneshot detailing the dynamic between the Doctor and the Master, narrated as if by someone telling a story. It is well worth the five minutes it will take you to read, and it is so far one of the only fics I've seen that can say so much in so few words. It is poetic, painful, saddening, pity-inspiring, and most of all, accurate.

Children of Galifrey by Hand of Omega
* Recommended by A Random Whovian
* Status: Dormant
* Synopsis: A series of drabbles featuring the Master and the Doctor as children. Can be considered slashy, but it's mostly friendship. Filled with Classic Who references and a lot of different genres.
* Comments: An amazing piece of work, honestly. Great for fans of New Who and Classic Who alike.

Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctorís Exile Very Deeply Indeed by x_los
* Recommended by [=CookiesAreNice=]
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Humour - follows an ExpandedUniverse character's increasingly irritating encounters with the Doctor
* Comments: You don't need to follow the EU to find this absolutely hilarious - the lovesick Master, the Doctor completely blind to the chaos he causes, the one scene only visits by companions, and possibly the best humorous characterization. Just read the thing.

Alone by Melora maxwell
* Recomended by dalekandrew, beeruckzII
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Enter the mind of the last Dalek.
* Comments: An excellent novelization of the episode Dalek, as seen through the eyes of the titular OmnicidalManiac WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds. It WILL pull your heartstrings.
** I think this story is brilliant! Even though it's told through the first person POV of a Dalek, which may seem strange, the way the author handled the emotions, the perspective and the actual interpretation of the episode and the Dalek's "feelings" was superb! Definitely check it out if you're a fan of the Daleks.

Operation Awesome by AND
* Recommended by @/LadyOfProcrastination, beeruckzII

* Synopsis: A different sort of Journey's End FixFic. spoiler: Does Donna really need to remember her travels with the Doctor to unlock the confidence and strength she found on her travels with him? Doesn't that suggest that there's something wrong with living on Earth? Sarah Jane and Torchwood gang up to save Donna - one way or another.
* Comments: The title says it all, really. Best Journey's End FixFic I've read.
** Beautiful story. It ties up everything so nicely, keeps everyone in character and makes me feel just a little bit better about what happened to Donna. A must read for Donna fans and for those suffering emotionally from the ending of Journey's End.

Turn Your Back by Singe
* Recommended by:psyzygy51

* Synopsis: Ten short stories showing the different Doctors' reactions to nudity. MUCH better than it sounds.
* Comments: Gen with hinted Ian/Barbara, Liz/Brigadier, Sarah Jane/Four, Ace/Seven, Martha/Ten. Maybe. if you squint. Humor/fluff. You'll probably find at least one CMOF or CMOH.

* Comments: "The planet isn't some sort of trap, or hellworld, or property of something unimaginable. It's just -- protected." Short and brilliant. I love how the Doctor's influence has turned Earth into both NightmareFuel for invaders, and a beacon of hope for those in need.

* Synopsis: There is a reason why the Doctor has never had all that much luck repairing the chameleon circuit. TARDIS POV on why she sticks with the police box shape.
* Comments: Perhaps she needs words. Reassuring words. Something to mark her as a friend, something that tells the primitives that she's useful and helpful and not going to hurt them. * Comments: Wow. Kudos to the author for making FIVE freaking terrifying without him seeming out of character. Seriously. He never raises his voice, he's never anything less than exquisitely polite, but the whole time there's just pure, PapaWolf, Oncoming Storm fury lurking underneath. BewareTheNiceOnes, indeed.
** [=LongLiveHumour=]: Dark and very well handled. Excellent writing style, too.

The Forgotten by AKs-on-show

* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: A young Australian woman named Sophie is forced to rely on someone for the first time in her life when the people around her start vanishing, and her universe literally begins to collapse. Her only hope is a man that calls himself the Doctor.
* Comments: The first in what looks like it'll be a rather long series. Featuring a new Doctor and a new companion, this story spends a lot of time introducing them. Interesting characters, even if the prose is a little boring. Give it a look! You might even enjoy it.
** You'll find a lot more of it here, although the series seems dead now, and right at the moment everything was coming to a resolution. Sigh.

Practical Mythology by lyricwritesprose (again)
* Recommended by DWMP, @/LongLiveHumour
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In which Jack Harkness is disabused of two false notions: that he is a coward, and that Time Lords never existed outside of myth.
* Comments: There is a reason why lyricwritesprose's name keeps showing up on this page. This is one of their longer works and they think it isn't the best "Jack's-first-days-on-the-TARDIS" fic out there but I'm pretty sure it is. Warning for some graphically described BodyHorror in the last chapter.
** This is among the best fanfics I have ever read. It's about Jack, but there's also some good stuff about the Doctor's PTSD, and the adventure part of it is creative and believable.

Past Due by Cryptile
* Recommended by @/LongLiveHumour
* Status: Dead
* Synopsis: The Doctor gets in over his head searching for a dangerous relic from the Time War, meaning that Jack and Rose will have to bail him out. Too bad he's packed them off on a holiday.
* Comments: Easily one of the best fanfics I've ever read. The plot draws you in, a net of beautiful writing threaded with humour. Cryptile writes a bloody good Nine. Sadly unfinished at twenty chapters and likely to remain so, but I still recommend it: for some reason it gives a lot more closure than most deadfics.

A Kinder Cartography by Noldo
* Recommended by @/LongLiveHumour
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: A map of the world in names; the Doctor and his companions.

Alien Abduction by JJPOR
* Recommended by genisgone
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: [=UFOs=]! Men in Black! Psychedelic Hippies! Tentacle-Beasts from Dimension X! New Mexico, 1968: Evil lurks beneath the Diablo Mesa as the Doctor and Romana take on the might of the Military-Industrial Complex; the Military-Industrial Complex probably ought to be very scared.
* Comments: An excellent adventure that feels like you're watching it on television instead of reading it. JJPOR combines Douglas Adams-esque narrative wit with sharp dialogue and a host of intriguing and amusing side characters, including a woman who develops quite the adorable crush on Romana. Romana in particular shines in this piece, and plays an active role, equal to the Doctor's. Alien Abduction reminds this troper of the best of the Doctor Who novel writers. This is truly professional quality writing and the incorrigible Fourth Doctor at his best.
** Seconded by Veanne, who thinks this fic is hilarious. You'll laugh your pancreas out.

You Better Watch Out by Suzanne
* Recommended by: genisgone

The New Three Doctors by Jason.

Le Donne Che Piangono (The Weeping Women) by Aralias

A Discourse on the Medical Risks of Regeneration by Pencil Guardian
* Recommended by: genisgone
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: On Gallifrey, the newly-minted Third Doctor gets a checkup.
* Comments: Despite the fairly simple sounding blurb, this is a thoughtful and at times quite funny fic with an ending that's not quite tragic. Not really a spoiler for The War Games, as everyone already knows what happens at the end.

, said the nightmare by guardingdark
* Recommended by: genisgone
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: The story goes that before there was anything, there were the Outer Gods. This is not that story.
* Comments: Absolutely the Doctor Who for you if you like very, very inhuman Time Lords, the Expanded Universe, daemons, and aliens who don't follow human gender binaries. It's on the short side, but the depth of story it alludes to without actually delving into, is huge, and fantastic.

* Synopsis: It has been suggested that after his eighth regeneration, the Doctor begins lying about his age. The official explanation is that he has simply lost track. This is a third possible explanation for the discrepancy between his ages in the new and old series.
* Comments: This story will make you feel very, very small. It's a brutal, mind-bending, cosmic-scale take on the Time War, complete with some of the most terrifying uses of the timey-wimey ball anyone's ever come up with--all in less than ten thousand words. Teyke's Doctor is alive on the page, walking that same line between "almost human" and "really, really not" that he does on the show. Also, the ending. You will never forget the ending.
** This story manages to convey the insane tactics, horror, and impossible scale of a war across realities.

* Synopsis: The Doctor (Fourth) and Sarah Jane land on an unknown planet as a result of a distress beacon making the TARDIS' systems go haywire. Things only go downhill from there.
* Pairing(s): POSSIBLY light Four/Sarah, if you turn your head, squint, and read into things. Aside from one line from one character, though, even that's stretching it.
* Comments: I can't say enough good about this fic. It's of medium length, and will probably take only about an hour to get through, but it'll be an hour well spent! Four and Sarah Jane are almost perfectly in-character, the pacing is perfect, the OCs are amusing and believable, and the ending of each chapter is a mild cliffhanger. In other words, this is an episode from the show that was never made. Not to mention the fact that the friendship moments between Four and Sarah are adorable.

* Synopsis: A set of connected one-shots, celebratory of the 2nd Doctor (though they do not exclusively feature him). "He was erased from his own memories, and what little he does remember is confusing and contrary. And yet he shaped them all into the versions of himself that survive to this day. A closer look at The Second Doctor, and how very vital he was and will be to them all...even if they can't remember him."
* Comments: The fic is very obviously celebratory of the 2nd Doctor, and finds very interesting ways of showing how he left his mark on all his future incarnations without stretching canon too much. The reason I absolutely adore this fic, though, is what it does to canon without technically breaching it; before reading this, I completely dismissed a lot of ideas in the Expanded Whoniverse, such the Looms and the history of Gallifrey, Rassilon, Omega, and particularly the Other. This fic looked at it all in a completely new way and I lapped it up! This author properly paces backstory and foreshadowing, enough to whet the reader's appetite, and does an excellent job of giving characters introspective/tender moments without going OOC.

Reality by "LovelyAmberLight"
* Recommended by "Blueu22"
* Status: Ongoing
* Author's Synopsis: A more realistic story of a whovian getting stuck in the "Doctor Who" universe. This isn't the typical "Yay, I met the Doctor" story. If you suddenly found out the Doctor was real, wouldn't you be a little scared? That would mean all the monsters were real too! WARNING: Trying the first quick chapter, may result in who-fic addiction. (Not responsible for binge reading) :)
* Comments: This fic truly is a binge read. I'm absolutely in love with it! The protagonist, Lilly, is a very human and realistic character. She is an 18-year-old college student who absolutely loves Doctor Who, especially number 9, but when she mysteriously finds herself in the whoverse her life becomes something of a nightmare. With The Doctor not believing she's from a universe where his life is a children's show, being diagnosed as "time sensitive", and caught in a 5 billion year paradox Lilly needs to learn how to navigate through life with The Doctor without accidentally destroying the multi-verse.
** Seconded strongly by this troper. LovelyAmberLight writes a very good Nine, brooding, dark, and occasionally goofy, with definite fatherly tendencies towards Lilly. Jackie Tyler, of all characters, is given a wonderful introduction and the character development she always deserved. Also, the main character, Lilly, is the best OC I've ever seen, in any fic. She is very real, terrified by the new universe she's in, but still incredibly brave. The plot is complex, twisting, and full of paradoxes - be sure to pay attention! All in all, an excellent fic.

Adopting the name of the Doctor, the new Time Lord travels through the six dimensions of space-time in his TARDIS trying to discover what caused his transformation... forgetting that there is Power in a Name.
* Comments: A 4-part series that while it is a Gary-Stu SI it is well written, well executed, and just...well everything. It uses the Dr.Who series as a base and then blends in other series perfectly : Star Wars(Old republic Era), Star Trek, The Dresden files, Legend of Korra, VideoGame/MechWarrior, Mass Effect, and plenty of other shout outs as well. The main character(Known as the SI doctor by WOG) is both likeable and relatable. This series needs more attention than it is currently getting. See for yourself.
** By far one of the best fan fictions I have ever read. And I don´t believe that it is that much of a Gary-Stu. (At least not more than the real Doctor himself) While a SI, the story is very well thought out and some has ideas that i have never seen in a FanFic bevor. It has absolutely hilarious moments (Like the reaction of people who knew Doctor Who as a TV-Show before and don't let me start with the Power Rangers.) and very heart wrenchingly sad scenes. And often it really feels like Doctor Who. I still have no idea why it is so unknown. So go and give it a read!

* Synopsis: Doctor Who / WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic crossover (WAIT! SIT DOWN, I'm going somewhere with this). Equestria experiences a series of strange events, culminating with an eccentric brown stallion literally falling out of the sky in a smoldering blue box. In her bid to get answers, Twilight embroils herself and her friends in an ancient war between two powerful races, one that may well destroy the multiverse with the aid of a Horror from Beyond.
** Here's a hint: The two races are NOT the Time Lords and the Daleks, you've likely never heard of one of these races, even you Whovians out there. Yes, that was a challenge.
** While the Identity of the races isn't a secret , not only is it a treat for those who've seen "The Shakespeare Code" and read the New Series Adventure Forever Autumn, but also an amazing [[spoiler:Re-imagining of the MLP Movie villains Hydia, Draggle, and Reeka as Carrionites]].
* Comments: A more ambitious read than others as it is written as a Doctor Who episode first, and a crossover second. Very solid writing and spot-on characterizations can be found in this cool fic. If you give it a chance and get past the head scratching nature of the premise and this fic becomes a tightly written joy to read. The Doctor's characterization as 'Ten-but-a-pony' creates some very interesting (read: hi-freaking-larious) interactions with the MLP main cast and also makes for some truly awesome moments, his lines are best read in a David Tennant voice. The characterizations of the ponies is spot on, beyond my ability to convey in words actually, so it is better read than told. GO. READ.
** Seconded here, the quality of the writing and characterisation speaks for itself, but it also gets points for the way it makes things DarkerAndEdgier while more optimistic and cheerful at the same time. The way it expands on the Friendship is Magic universe and the sheer depth it goes into things is amazing.

Too bad there are creatures in the universe with an interest in time travelers and the energy they emit. On the bright side, sometimes all you need is a good Doctor to step in and save the day.
* Comments: Essentially a vehicle to explore the idea of Marty [=McFly=] as the Tenth Doctor's companion. What is really fascinating about the whole thing is that Doctor [=McFly=] manages to capture the 'voice' of both Marty and the Doctor extraordinarily well, combining the two and generating genuine character interactions which work. With the stories organized into episodes (beginning with Frozen In Time, it makes for a nice, quick read. * Recommended by Tropers/HG131, Tropers/SchizoTechnician

* Synopsis: The second and third fic here are sequels to the first one. All of them are Doctor Who/Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer crossovers, with the second one also crossing over with Series/Angel (A Hole In The World, to be exact). There is some romance in them () but that is not the main focus of the stories.
* Comments: These two fics are amazingly well written, all of the dialog is in character and it, in my opinion, meshes the Whoniverse and the Buffyverse quite well. The third one is currently in progress, though, and the writer's music selections in the second one leave something to be desired.

* Comments: crossover. No, don't run away yet, I swear it's good!
** @/Kraken17: Read it. IT'S GOOD!
** @/SadisticApathy: Any one of the half-dozen scenes between the Doctor and River is worth it.
** Brilliant. Every single person is exactly in character. One of the best fanfictions I've ever read.
** Raz_Fox: Sweet Gallifrey, this Fic is the best I've ever read. The author has a perfect grasp on the Tenth Doctor's personality!
** @/UncloudedTJ: Has perfect characterization and an awesome villain that doesn't seem to be forced at all. Definitely worth the read if you're a fan of either series.
** Mariecat: Sixthed! Loved every word and everything makes perfect sense in either series.
** @/Squall: To quote the Ninth Doctor: fantastic. And I'd give a lot to see a sequel, preferably where River travels with the Doctor for a year in the comparative space of ten to fifteen seconds.
** @/KathrynShadow: Eighthed. Definitely. It... I... There are no words. It is amazing in every possible way. Seriously. Go read it. NOW.
** Trimeta: Ninthed. Seriously, a must for any fan of both series. Even if you're not normally into fanfic, read this. (Though I suppose if you're not normally into fanfic, why are you on the fanfic recommendation page? No matter, stop reading what I'm typing and go read this story.)
** @/randomfanboy: Tenthed! Characterization is spot on! Writing is good! Worst I can say is that it feels a bit weird when things get too Doctor Who-ish (i.e. when the very Who-ish villain shows up) but it's many good aspects outweigh that one bad one.
** @/Scionofgrace: Eleventhed! This is one high-quality fic. It does justice to both universes, and the climax is chilling.
** @/Revelo: Twelved! This is one of the best crossovers I've read, both universes are integrated seamlessly, everyone is right in character and with a villain that doesn't feel out of place. Why are you still reading this page, go read the story!
** Zankaru Zelladonii: Bloody fantastic read!
** @/Sakan4k If you like both Series/Firefly and Series/DoctorWho, you'd be a fool not to read this. Never have I heard a character's voice in my head so clearly as I have reading this. Everything is spot on.
** Jerenda I've never seen Firefly, but I may just have to after reading this. Ten's personality is so perfect, it makes me want to hug him and cry all at the same time! <3 This is why I have not given up on fanfic writers yet, because every so often they come up with something as gorgeous as this beauty.
** [=TurnTable=] also agrees. Never before in a fanfiction had she seen such strong characterization and voice - for every single character, no less.
** @/Karasu91 seventeenthed. The writing and the characterisation are nothing short of sublime. The author makes the Tenth Doctor so flawlessly fit inside the Firefly Verse, with believable interactions between the characters that respect their personalities so well that you cannot help to add this to your personal canon. Every single character is well rendered, with dialogue that seems to come right out of the original shows, and the plot is good and intriguing enough to leave you dying to see it on screen, closing your eyes to see the scenes in your mind's eye and hear the Doctor's Theme played on an Old West guitar. A must read for every Series/Firefly and Series/DoctorWho fan!!
** mestizaa: Eighteenthed. This troper is usually quite dubious about crossover fics, but this one made it work. Like really, really, really well. It stays true to both fandoms, and even if you're not familiar with Firefly, it's worth the read.
** [=LondonPurple=]: this is getting a bit ridiculous, but nineteenthed. Brilliant character portrayal, tight story writing, great mythology integration. An excellent story, worth reading alone for the spot-on depiction of the Tenth Doctor.
** @/StClair: Guess that makes me a nice round twenty. It's kind of scary how well the Doctor meshes with the crew of Serenity, Mal and River especially (and it's very sweet watching him with Kaylee too), and everyone just crackles.
** Magyareagle: And number 21 goes to me. I've watched one Doctor Who episode in my entire life, but am a huge fan of firefly, and this captures the cast perfectly.
** theSnazz: Twentyseconded! Brilliant! What can be said about this fic that hasn't already been said? JUST READ IT ALREADY.
** @/KingPenguin23: Twenty-thirded. This is the fanfic that convinced me to give fanfic a chance. I couldn't possibly recommend this more strongly for a fan of either series.

It weaves in the romance of Harry and Ginny, as well as those present in the Arthurian Mythology in a fascinating and completely brilliant manner that left leaves the reader in awe. * Comments: Primarily a TNG crossover, although with time travel, some other eras come up as well. The focus is more on character interaction than big dramatic action scenes, with decent character voices throughout.
** Seconded. Nearly every show, excepting [[Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine [=DS9=]]], is represented here and the Doctor plays off of them all brilliantly. The writing is excellent and the ending revelation is a thing of beauty.

* Comments: Machiavelli tells a story that is at once funny, heartfelt, action packed and horrifying, all while staying true to both universes and characters. All of the Eva characters get moments to shine, and the Sherlock/Watson like dynamic of the Doctor and Shinji is a joy. While it primarily features the Tenth Doctor, Machiavelli finds a creative way to work in the Time-Lords other incarnations at many points. Just read it, it's good.

With the Stars in Our Rear-view Mirror by Della19
* Recommended by: Krysstinia
* Status: Complete, First in a series
* Synopsis: As described by the author: There is a three year gap, ages 19-22, in the records of one James Tiberius Kirk, recently Captain of the USS Enterprise - an absence so absolute that it almost seems that he was not even on the planet Earth during that time, yet there also exists no record of a passage off world. When pressed, Jim will say only that he was travelling during that time, with only a set of wheels and the stars in his rear-view mirror. This, as it turns out, is not entirely the truth. It is also not technically a lie. Or, conversely, the Doctor has a fondness for them, these pink and yellow humans, these heroes. Rose Tyler, Defender of the Universe; River Song, The Impossible Astronaut; James Tiberius Kirk, Captain of the Enterprise. These legends, who belong first to history are far too tempting to resist, especially for the Doctor, who is perhaps the most dedicated historian there ever was.Or, the one where the Doctor accidentally crashes in Jim Kirkís backyard and then takes him to see the stars, and you know, in general shake up the universe. Needless to say, itís a ride. Mostly gen, pre Kirk/Spock, background River/The Doctor, Sarek/Amanda.

* Crossover With: Series/Torchwood
* Pairings: Jack/Ten, with heavy past Jack/Ianto
* Synopsis: Jack struggles with his identity after the events of Children of Earth, which becomes more complicated when he runs into the Doctor.
* Comments: There's some slash, but it's really not the focus (and if it bothers anyone, aside from a stray awkward kiss, nothing actually happens until the epilogue-which is set well after the story proper-and it's easy to just skip over). Ten is hilariously in character and gives Jack the support he needs after COE-which takes the form of giving him hard time while adventuring in a way only the Doctor can. Ianto's memory is present throughout and unlike in a lot Torchwood/Who fics, Jack's relationship with Ianto is not brushed away as only being something on the side for fun in order to make way for a new paring, There's a nice mix of humor, angst, and action true to the show.

Ghosts in the Sun by ZTX
* Recommended by: Dangly Legged Owl
* Status: Two parts completed, a third has been announced.
* Crossover With: Music/DangerDaysTheTrueLivesOfTheFabulousKilljoys
* Synopsis: The Doctor encounters the Killjoys when the TARDIS crash lands in the Zones of 2019 California. Soon after, he finds himself face to face with one of his most hated enemies: the Weeping Angels. To keep his new friends from certain doom, the Doctor must discover the truth about a strange notebook from the 1940s and solve the mystery of the man called Michael Milligram ...
* Comments: Although this crosses over with a concept album by My Chemical Romance, it is by no means an RPF! The Eleventh Doctor shares the starring role here with the fiery-haired rebel leader, Party Poison; the sequel adds Clara (and Cybermen). Longfic that's right up there with Moffat's best episodes where timey-whimeyness and unexpected turns are concerned. The author has a great grasp on the Doctor's personality as well as on the storytelling of Doctor Who in general. She's also seriously good at invoking the desolate post-apocalyptic world of the Killjoys and creates enjoyable characters in a story filled with action and awesome that can also be, at times, surprisingly heartwarming. Some knowledge of the Killjoys universe is required - though I believe the first story at least can be read even without that - as well as familiarity with the latest series of Doctor Who.

* Comments: The story is well paced and well balanced giving all the various worlds and character their own time to shine. It's a fun and exciting story with humor and touching and emotional moments. Some subtle hints of romance and not so subtle hints of romance.The story does well to connect the worlds without feeling forced and makes the characters feel like their connections are natural and fit with the established canon. It also puts some characters like Excalibur in new light. It actually makes you feel sympathy with either an annoying character or just a pure comic relief character. * Comments: This is probably the best Code Lyoko crossover ever written. No cheap shots taken, nothing felt forced. * Comments: Seriously epic WIP. Slight crossover with Series/Torchwood, as Ianto Jones is a main character and they briefly mention the Hub. * Comments: This story is, without a doubt, the most well-written, intriguing Doctor Who fic I have ever encountered. The author said she wanted to avoid the "Doctor and Master at Hogwarts" cliche, and she succeeds wonderfully. K/T isn't the focus - it's a character study of Koschei and his descent from a (relatively) innocent boy to a man the reader can see as having the seeds of Delgado's Master. * Comments: One of the few Doctor/Rose fics out there where Rose is decidedly not a PuritySue, or even a particularly good person - no matter how hard she tries to be. * Comments: There isn't a way to overstate how phenomenal this fanfiction is. It follows the life of Alan Turing from the end of WWII to the end of his life, and details his complicated relationship with the Doctor during that time. Without giving away too much (though nothing history doesn't already tell you) the story's ending has left me in tears both times I've read it. While an alien hunts her and preys on children, Rose meets a remarkable man called the Doctor. Suddenly her childhood is full of adventure, aliens and lots of running that will change the course of her life. First in the Guardians of the Universe series.
* Comments: This is the first in a series called 'The Guardians of the Universe', and it's a very intricate and detailed universe that uses material from Old Who, New Who, SJA, and basically everything within the Whoniverse. Like the show itself, it has season-arcs, spanning every story, but also deals with an alien-of-the-week type of situation. I loved it the moment I started reading, but part 3 (The Companion Connection) is by far the best one so far. It centers around Rose, but it also features every single one of the other companions and their Doctors. A must-read for every Rose lover out there.

The "plot" consists of Davros and the Daleks struggling with the Master (Two of them!) and the Cybermen over control of Japan while the Third Doctor arrives and meets the typical anime ActionGirl for a companion. Eleven is Cool by humansrsuperior.
* Recommended by Nadilune
* This vid is pure joy. It perfectly shows this incarnation of the Doctor's personality : dorky, flaily, fun.
* Synopsis: The Doctor is cool. An Eleven appreciation vid

Geronimo by KatrinDepp.

* Another vid about Eleven. Lighthearted, fun, with a catchy and appropriately-titled song. Just watch it, you won't stop smiling.
* Synopsis: The Doctor antics in series 5 and 6.

Glósóli by such_heights.

* Gorgeous. A layered, meta-driven view on series 5 and 6. It's amazing, epic, thoughful, and has the Ponds being their adorable selves.
* Synopsis: "That's a fairytale." "Aren't we all?"

The Adventure by Calapine.
* Recommended by Nadilune
* This one involves all the eleven Doctors and their companions, and it's truly magnificent. Definitely worth a look or three.
* Synopsis: A nice trip through time and space.

48 Years of Doctor Who -- Marching On by xxdrosexx.
* Recommended by seacloudsky
* Synopsis: All eleven Doctors and a large amount (if not all) of the companions, with the clips matching perfectly with the audio. As a anniversary video, it also has a bit at the beginning which is as much a dedication to the series, as it is to its world.

Dalek Tales - The Dalek That Time Forgot by Lee Adams.
* Recommended by remorium1
* Synopsis: History is in peril, the crack in the universe is changing the very fabric of reality. Upon leaving Earth, the New Paradigm see an opportunity which will lead one Dalek on its path to destiny. Dalek Caan will be the savior of the Daleks...
* This is a very well written fan video, animated and voiced by the same person, and it neatly fills the plothole of how Dalek Caan got into the time war in the first place. It's three parts plus an epilogue, and is well worth a watch.

Next Stop Everywhere by Katdepp
* Recommended by: genisgone
* Synopsis: A lovely and thoughtful introspective on River's life and relationship with the Doctor. Very shippy.
* Comments: Nicely edited, and a treat for fans of River and the Eleventh Doctor.
** Also from the same video maker and also about Doctor/River And Strike the Timelord Dead. Recommended by wolfpuppy.

Sail by Karaaislin
* Recommended by: genisgone
* Synopsis: This is a difficult video to describe; it can be loosely summed up as a speculative trailer on what the creator thinks would be a cool plot for series seven, but that doesn't really cover it at all. Without any spoilers, it involves Rose coming back in a way that's intriguing and original, despite only having clips from series two and Journey's End to work with.
* Comments: It's excellently edited, and the plot is fascinating. It's not overtly shippy despite Rose's return, and the twist is one you probably didn't see coming.
** The Rose thing still seems contrived and unexplained. Though the twist is decent.

Marble House by hollywoodgrrl
* Recommended by: Maxwell_Edison
* Synopsis: "There's one thing I always wanted to ask Jack. Back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. The man who appears out of nowhere and saves the world; except sometimes he doesn't. All those times in history where there was no sign of him... I wanted to know why not." ó Gwen Cooper, Torchwood: Children of Earth
* Comments: Retells "Human Nature / Family of Blood" on both the macro (impending World War I and the Doctor's true nature) and micro (the love story between John Smith and Joan Redfern, Martha's experiences of traveling in the TARDIS) levels. Impossibly well put together, using actual source footage from World War I, text from the show, and a number of other tricks, none of which seem remotely gimicky. Beautifully edited and challenging. Has more than a few moments which can genuinely be described as "spine-tingling." A masterpiece of the fandom.

Enlightenment (Special Edition) Fan Trailer by biggerbaddaddy

* Synopsis: A fan-made trailer for Enlightenment.
* Comments: A brilliant, epic trailer for one of the most visually stunning serials of the Classics Series.

Obedience by Brotherhood Studios
* Recommended by: TheTroperBeforeTime
* Synopsis: It begins as a simple enough thriller, with a captive being forced to participate in a twisted take on Staneley Milgram's "Obedience to Authority" experiment; it then spirals into tonal shifts, over-the-top acting, and the ultimate twist that reveals it was a Doctor Who fan film all along.
* Comments: An class film that clearly went above and beyond. Yes it's an amateur short film, but it was made by people who obviously had a ball making it.

WHOLOCK by John Smith
* Recommended by: ThatRandomGuy42
* Synopsis: "Months after an encounter with a mysterious 'Doctor', Sherlock becomes obsessed with discovering more about this impossible man... until the man makes an unexpected return."
* Comments: It's a short, beautifully crafted fan creation that depicts The Doctor meeting Sherlock. The entire thing is comprised of assets from both shows so it really looks like they are both there together, edited to almost perfection. It must be seen.

* Synopsis: A music video that pairs Doctor Who with the song "What If" by Safty Suit.
* Comments: It's a beautiful video that shows the relationships between the Doctor and his companions. The song completely fits Doctor Who.

Gallifreyan Girls by TeaTime4MadGirls
* Recommended by: phoenixyfriend
* Synopsis: When Romana heard that Gallifrey had returned, she decided to gather up all the Doctor's favourite Time Ladies and throw a little party...
* Comments: A silly and fun little music video featuring the various Time Ladies (and Rassilon) in a parody of Music/KatyPerry's "California Gurls."

Never Look Away by Purplefringe

* Synopsis: A study in Clara's relationship with the Eleventh Doctor.
* Comments: Beautifully edited and fast-paced, and the choice of song is superb. Not-quite Eleven/Clara.

Doctor Who Title Sequence by Billy Hanshaw
* Recommended by: genisgone
* Synopsis: ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin
* Comments: An excellently rendered concept for Series 8's opening credits
** More than that, it was seen by Creator/StevenMoffat who liked it so much that he asked the creator to come in and recreate it with some slight tweaks (such as a real, official photo of the Capaldi Doctor), and it now graces the episodes of series 8.

Doctor Who Parody by The Hillywood Show
* Recommended by: caledonian812
* Synopsis: What happens when you combine the Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the Tenth Doctor's run. Pure awesomeness.
* Comments: A lot of love went into this production. Costumes and makeup on the actors are spot on, effects are brilliant, and you actually feel that it's Ten and his companions singing along. Absolutely a must see.

The Animated Adventures of Doctor Who by Stephen Byrne
* Recommended by: Xalfrea
* Synopsis: A fan-made opening for a hypothetical Saturday-Morning animated series of Doctor Who, done in a style and tone of WesternAnimation/GravityFalls. Starring the Twelfth Doctor and a younger Mabel-esque Clara, it is made with the intent of being LighterandSofter with a more humorous bent to it than the main show.
* Comments: Like many fan-made things, it makes you wish it were real. Plus, if you are a fan of WesternAnimation/GravityFalls or have watched the show, you can really appreciate it even more. A must-see if just for 40 seconds of fan-made fun and enjoyment.

Time Traveller Boyfriend by MASHED

* Synopsis: A fan-made trailer for a Doctor Who dating sim, complete with Japanese voice-over and references to both Classic and Modern series.
* Comments: One can easily tell from this video that some very dedicated, hardcore Whovians put it together. Take care to read the small text and any words that show up on-screen!

Seasons of War by A Crow Trod
* Recommended by: SamTheAwesome
* Synopsis: Seasons of War' is an unofficial short film, which features the character of the War Doctor from the BBC TV series, and has been created to help promote an anthology of specially-commissioned stories about him - all in aid of the UK charity, Caudwell Children.
* Comments: A fantastic short film about the War Doctor and people affected by the time war. Must see!

The Time War by Babel Colour
* Recommended by: TimeLordVictorious
* Synopsis: A fan-edit of footage from both the modern and classic series, with voice-overs about the Last Great Time War and who fought in it, taken from not just the classic and modern runs, but also several Big Finish audios. It was made several years before the War Doctor was created, and thus features only the Eighth and Ninth Doctors.
* Comments: It still holds up today, and covers a good portion of the Time War, from beginning to end.

What If Doctor Who Wasn't Axed? by DaDoctorWhoFan
* Recommended by: Mr.Krabs
* Synopsis: A whole series of videos that a beg a take on the question of what other episodes of Doctor Who would there have been if it wasn't cancelled after the airing of Survival in 1989. The first season works on the documentary that was made for the DVD of Survival in 2007 which since then has gone onto expanding so much further than you would ever imagine!
* Comments: Brilliant series once you get into more of the other seasons, especially after the year 2000!
