A [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8937106/1/The-Dragon-and-the-Bow fanfic]] made by Finmonster, a fuse fanfic between ''WesternAnimation/{{Brave}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon''.

Political marriages are nothing new. Times are hard even in the harsh Northlands, with dragons and marauders in abundance and allies few and far between. But when Hiccup and Merida are forced together to forge an alliance between Berk and the Highlands, will the result be heartbreak or will unexpected feelings defeat an ancient evil that threatens to turn the world to ash?

There are 40 chapters and the story is completed.

Takes place after ''FanFic/HeavensLight''.

!!This fanfiction series contains examples of:
* AbsurdCuttingPower: For a saber, Bemühen can cleave through a wooden training sword pretty easily.
* AbusiveParents: Gobber's father was fond of stealing, killing, and raping, so it's not surprising that he wasn't a great parent.
* ActionDad: Merida and Hiccup's fathers, Fergus and Stoick, are both hardened warriors and are shown to be very skilled.
* ActionDuo: Merida and Hiccup. Stoick and Fergus make a pretty good team when they try to fight off Mor'du as well.
* ActionGirl: Merida's great with a bow and arrow, Astrid carries around a waraxe, and Ruffnut is no pushover with a hatchet and knife.
%%* {{Adorkable}}: Hiccup and Fishlegs.
* AintTooProudToBeg: Snotlout asks Hiccup if he can lead the team to impressed his father.
* AlmightyMom: Elinor prevents Fergus and Stoick from tearing each other apart, and by extension helps prevent another war from breaking out between the Highlanders and Berk Vikings.
* AlphaBitch: In the earlier chapters, Astrid is very mean and spiteful and looks down on just about everyone.
* AlternateHistory: Merida is a descendant of Boudica, who was a real life leader in ancient Britain and fought the Romans.
* AlternateUniverseFic: Ever wonder what it would be like if ''Brave'' and ''How to Train Your Dragon'' took place in the same world?
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Hiccup, and Fishlegs have been looked down on their whole lives for their intellectual ways, and Merida is treated poorly at first for being a Highlander. It is revealed in the past Gobber faced this for being half-Highlander, though except for a few individuals, he is largely accepted by the village.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParent: Fishlegs's mom, Ribbon Ingerman, was in the stands waving enthusiastically to her son. Much to his humiliation, especially when she makes herself "presentable" in front of Princess Merida.
* AnArmAndALeg: Just like the movie, [[spoiler: Hiccup loses a foot in the final battle.]] The story goes into more detail about it.
* AnAxeToGrind: Mor'du and Astrid prefer waraxes, and Ruffnut uses a hatchet.
* ArrangedMarriage: Between Hiccup and Merida. One of the driving aspects of the plot.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Mor'du, who can hold his own against both Fergus and Stoick, is the defacto leader of the Vendal.
* AuthorAppeal: Like most of Finmonster's work, The Dragon and the Bow is a crossover story.
* BeardOfBarbarism: Mor'du sports one of these, as does Stoick.
* BearsAreBadNews: While they're not actual bears, The Vendal wear bear pelts, wield clubs tipped with bear claws, and tend to rip people apart. Their leader, Mor'du, is also known as the Demon Bear. There's enough of a theme to get the point across.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Hiccup and Fishlegs, Snotlout and Tuffnut found out the hard way in chapter 8
* {{BFS}}: Mor'du wields an obsidian claymore that's as big as he is.
* BigBad: [[spoiler: The Red Death, an giant intelligent dragon who destroyed the united Viking kingdom centuries ago.]]
* BiggerBad: [[spoiler: At the end of the story, Loki warns Hiccup of a great shadow spirit that threatens the whole world.]]
* BigShutUp: What Snotlout gets from Hiccup after teasing him too much about how much Merida hates him.
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: Mor'du's claymore and axe are made of obsidian for maximum coolness.
* BladeOnAStick: Tuffnut prefers a double-bladed spear during dragon training.
* BladeReflection: Bemühen's surface is surprisingly well-polished for its age.
* BraveScot: The Highlanders all naturally fit this trope.
* BreathWeapon: Each species of dragon has a unique breath weapon, ranging from simple fireballs to purple blasts of lightning. It's also mentioned that dragons can only use their breath attacks a certain number of times before having to rest.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Fishlegs stands up to his father Fishguts for the first time after he insults Hiccup and Merida. Hiccup also makes it clear in chapter 8 that he doesn't appreciate Gobber's unsupportive attitude. Gobber does apologize for it.
* CatFight: Between Merida and Astrid in chapter 7.
* ChildByRape: Gobber's mother was taken from her Highland home during a Viking raid and brought back to Berk by Gobber's father. She gave birth to the man's child and did her best to raise Gobber properly.
%%* CharacterDevelopment
* CleanCut: Hiccup's saber Bemühen cuts through a wooden training sword with surprisingly little effort.
%%* CoolOldLady: Hilde and Gothi.
* CreepySouvenir: The Vendal tend to take the heads of those they've killed during their raids.
%%* CrossoverShip: Hiccup and Merida
%%* DarkerAndEdgier
* DefrostingIceQueen: Astrid, over the course of the series.
* DisappearedDad: Astrid is especially bitter about her father's death in the war between the Berk Vikings and the Highlanders, and takes it out on Merida.
* DoubleWeapon: Tuffnut uses a double-bladed spear.
* DropTheHammer: Fishlegs uses a warhammer to fight a Grunckle head-on, and Snotlout carries around a mace. Hiccup also smacks Snotlout and Tuffnut with his blacksmith hammer after they've thoroughly insulted him.
* DualWielding: Mor'du can use his claymore and war axe at the same time. Ruffnut also uses a knife and hatchet for dragon training.
%%* EarnYourHappyEnding
* EngagementChallenge: Hiccup has to go through a ceremonial one to win Merida's hand.
* EvilIsBigger: At twelve feet tall, it's no wonder Mor'du is known as the Demon Bear.
* EyeScream: [[spoiler: Hiccup kills Mor'du by shooting him in the eye with an explosive arrow.]]
* FanArt: There's fan art [[http://frostymaggie.tumblr.com/post/44637798678 here]].
* FatAndSkinny: Fishlegs and Hiccup
%%* FireForgedFriends
* FunetikAksent: How the Highlander accent is written.
* FusionFic: Between ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Brave}}''.
* GeniusBruiser: Fishlegs can stand toe-to-toe with a Gronckle and reads more than any other Viking in Berk.
* HalfBreedDiscrimination: Gobber is half-Highlander and suffered from a large amount of discrimination on Berk when he was young. He still suffers it from some people and he wonders if Hiccup and Merida's children will suffer from it as well.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: In chapter 9, Rapunzel and Quasiomodo from Finmonster's other fanfic ''Fanfic/HeavensLight'' make an appearance.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Hiccup prefers the light weight of his saber Bemühen over more traditional, and heavy, Viking weaponry.
* HeroesWantRedheads: Merida and Hiccup, the two redheaded heroes of the story, [[spoiler: eventually fall in love.]]
* HornyVikings: Most of the Berk vikings are described wearing horned helmets.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: Hiccup just wants to be respected by his village and his father.
* ImAHumanitarian: The Vendal not only love to raid and plunder, but also enjoy munching on the occasional villager.
* JockDadNerdSon: Whereas Stoick is a stocky warrior who fights dragons, Hiccup is a scraggly blacksmith who usually gets by with his smarts. Similarly, Fishguts scolds his son Fishlegs for reading too much and spending his time with Hiccup and Merida.
* KnifeNut: Ruffnut uses a knife along with her hatchet when in dragon training.
* LargeAndInCharge: You can tell Mor'du is the leader of the Vendal because he's the biggest and strongest among them.
* LightningBruiser: Mor'du can keep up with Merida, fight two people at once, and block arrows all at the same time. Night Furies are also renowned for their speed and powerful plasma breath.
%%* LiteralAssKicking
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Gobber describes shields as the most essential equipment for a would-be dragonslayer, and against most attacks, his advice proves true. Inverted, however, when a Gronckle's fireball blasts Merida's shield to splinters.
* MarriageBeforeRomance: Somewhat, as Merida and Hiccup are engaged before they meet one another.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Whereas Merida is great with a bow and sword, has a fiery temper, and doesn't mind a little danger, Hiccup prefers to work on gadgets and his sketches.
* MissingMom: Hiccup's mother is dead by the beginning of the story [[spoiler: having been murdered years ago by Alvin the Treacherous]].
* MixedAncestry: Gobber's mother originated from the Highlands, and his father was a Berk Viking.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Although she's a lithe teenager, Astrid seems just as strong as some of the more built Vikings in Berk.
* MusicSoothesTheSavageBeast: [[spoiler: Merida sings a song together with a Nadder, which has the effect of making it docile and nonviolent.]]
* MythologyGag: The name of the story is taken directly from ''[[WesternAnimation/{{Brave}} Brave's]]'' working title, which was "The Bear and the Bow."
** Hiccup and Fishlegs being best friends is a nod to the [[Literature/HowToTrainYourDragon original book series]].
* NamedWeapons: As Hilde mentions, any weapon worth its salt has a name. The saber Bemühen is one such weapon.
** After some thought, Merida names her yew bow Sealgair, which is Gaelic for "hunter." Fishlegs, not wanting to be left out, considers naming his hammer after a famous Viking jarl.
* NoodleIncident: Hiccup just mentioning an unspecified incident with an invention of his called the Borer is enough to make Gobber shudder. In a later case, Fishlegs bursts into Gobber's smithy with a large chunk of dragon dung. He immediately forbids Hiccup from asking him where he got it or how he found it.
* NoYouGoFirst: Happens comically between Hiccup and Stoick. Hiccup attempts to tell his father he's no longer interested in dragon training, and Stoick tries to tell Hiccup that he's decided to let him take part in the lessons.
* OneHandedZweihander: Mor'du prefers to wield his massive weapons in one hand, so he can use both at the same time.
%%* OriginalCharacter
* PapaWolf: Gobber, as Snotlout and Tuffnut found out in chapter 8.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Not at first mind you but throughout the story Hiccup and Merida grow closer and by chapter 20 they [[spoiler: have their first kiss.]]
* PublicExecution: Astrid states that she wished that Merida had killed Hiccup in the arena. It would have given Berk an excuse to have Merida and her family killed.
* RagingStiffie: Hiccup in chapter 23.
-->'''Merida:''' Doon boy.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: If his size doesn't scare you away, Mor'du's red peeps surely will.
* RedHeadedHero: Both Merida and Hiccup have red hair.
* RPGMechanicsVerse: Fishlegs can describe any species of dragon in terms of its stats.
* SealedEvilInACan: [[spoiler:The Red Death has been sealed in the Nest for centuries by Hilde]]
* ScaryTeeth: Considering his teeth have been sharpened to points, it's no wonder Mor'du's chompers qualify. Toothless has a retractable pair of sharp teeth as well.
* ShoutOut: There are several throughout the story.
** There are multiple shoutouts to ''Literature/TheThirteenthWarrior''. The Vendal are based off of the Wendal, and the Viking prayer is directly from the movie. Chapter five, "Eaters of the Dead," is named after the book's original title.
** Chapter eighteen is titled ''[[Literature/ADanceWithDragons A Dance with a Dragon]]''.
** While the trio are fleeing the Monstrous Nightmare with Fishlegs carrying them, Hiccup looks back and shouts, ''[[Film/JurassicPark "Must go faster! Must go faster!"]]''
** During a funeral for the Vikings killed in a Vendal raid on Berk, Stoick sings ''[[Film/TheHobbit "Misty Mountains Cold"]]''.
** Merida sings ''[[Film/JoyeuxNoel "Hymne des Fraternisés"]]'' to soothe an angry Nadder.
** [[spoiler:The Red Death's BadassBoast is similar to Smaug's from ''Literature/TheHobbit''.]]
* ShoutOutToShakespeare: Chapter eleven and twelve are called "Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble," and "Toil and Trouble" respectively, two famous lines from ''Theatre/MacBeth''.
** Which, humorously enough, is set in Scotland.
* SinsOfOurFathers: Because her father was killed in the war with the Highlands, Astrid is initially hostile towards Merida.
%%* SongFic: Type II.
* TastesLikeFriendship: Hiccup and Toothless share a fish (a raw fish... which Hiccup only gets to eat it after Toothless regurgitates some), and thus a friendship is started.
%%* TeethClenchedTeamwork
* TeethFlying: During the final battle, Mor'du hits Fishlegs across the face with a backhand and knocks some of his teeth out.
* TheApprentice: Hiccup is Gobber's apprentice blacksmith.
* TheBully: Several, but Snotlout in particular goes out of his way to pick on Hiccup.
* TheDreaded: Stories about Mor'du are used pretty frequently to scare children, and the Night Fury is only spoken about in whispers. The Red Death also qualifies.
* TheFairFolk: The [[FauxFlame Wisps]]. They're also said to have the power to [[spoiler:[[WindsOfDestinyChange change fate]].]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Merida give one to Astrid for the way she treat her the whole story.
%%* TheStationsOfTheCanon
* TheSouthPaw: It takes Merida's insight to show Hiccup that he's left-handed, since he's always been told that using weapons right-handed is the correct way.
* ThreeAmigos: Hiccup, Merida, and Fishlegs.
* {{Tomboy}}: Ruffnut, Astrid, and Merida all qualify for a variety of reasons.
* TomboyPrincess: To her mother's chagrin, Merida prefers riding horses and shooting arrows to her royal duties.
%%* TookALevelInJerkass
* TrainingFromHell: Gobber runs a mean dragon training course.
