It is Continuation several years after the end to the My Little Pony series. Twilight Sparkle is working on her crowning achievement, a potential way to harness the energy of the Elements of Harmony for everyday use. But something goes wrong during the experiment. Disastrously wrong. Now the experimental apparatus is a smoking ruin and Princess Celestia lies wounded, unable to remember the events of that fateful day. As she struggles to recall what exactly happened, the Princess must wrestle with trust issues about her sister, her growing feelings for her former student, and the relentless task of maintaining her characteristic composure throughout it all.

Composure is a deep, beautiful story that focuses on the emotional development of and relationships between Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Twilight Sparkle.

The story is one of the MLP fanon's two premiere Twilestia ship-fics, along with , which has a DarkerAndEdgier take on the whole affair.

Be warned, the author updates only about once every 3-6 months and the story is only half-way done.

* BadassTeacher: Princess Celestia has fought in so many wars that her first action upon waking up in the burning wreckage of her student's experiment is to attack her with precise military moves, despite having multiple serous injuries, because she thought she was an enemy. She got better.
* BadDreams: Princess Celestia keeps dreaming of her sister's transformation to her Nightmare Moon a millennium ago. She tries to hide it from Luna, with limited success.
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: [[spoiler: While inside Princess Celestia's dreamworld, Luna must fight against her sister's SuperpoweredEvilSide while simultaneously trying to free her from the Symbolism thorns of TheCorruption, all while the dreamworld collapses.]]
* BeautifulDreamer: When Princess Celestia and Twilight Sparkle share a bed due to Celestia's nightmares.
* BeneathTheMask: Princess Celestia is in love With Twilight Sparkle. [Unfortunately, her queenly mask is so strong that she hides this truth even from herself .
* BirdsOfAFeather: Pair together the two most intellectual characters on the show? Sure!
* BitCharacter: Those of Twilight's research assistants that get lines.
* BrokenAce: Princess Celestia is a Type 2. Her efforts to maintain a mask of composure over her true self are very damaging, .
* BroughtDownToBadass: Princess Celestia's first action after being blown up and waking up in a field of rubble, unable to use magic or fly, next to a pony she does not recognize? Attack her with Badass enough force to shatter stone.
* BroughtDownToNormal:After being blown up, Princess Celestia is unable to use magic thanks to a horn injury.
* CainAndAbel: A millennium ago, Princess Luna grew envious of all the attention that Princess Celestia got instead of her, she turned evil and attempted to eliminate her sister to bring about eternal night. Celestia was forced to fight back and banish her beloved sister to the moon. Luna's betrayal and the subsequent fight still haunt Celestia.
* CelebCrush: Twilight Sparkle had one on Princess Celestia. Of course, it helps when said celebrity is your teacher.
* CelebrityIsOverrated: Princess Celestia realizes that it is her subject's expectations of her to be invincible that cause them to refuse to look at her directly when she is wounded and thus illustrating her fallibility. It unnerves her.
* ChildMage: Twilight, in her youth.
* ChildProdigy: Twilight Sparkle was a magical and literary prodigy since the pony equivalent of six.
* CompleteImmortality: The Princesses, probably. Neither have aged in a millennium and Celestia survived being blown up with only a burn, a concussion, and a gash in her head.
* TheConfidant: Subverted. Princess Celestia briefly considers telling Twilight Sparkle about her extensive efforts to maintain her public image, but decides not to, as this would put an unnecessary burden on her.
* Continuation
* ConverseWithTheUnconscious: Twilight admits out loud that she loves Princess Celestia when she is cradling her broken body. Celestia not only does not hear this, but wakes up disoriented and attacks Twilight, not remembering who she is and thinking her an enemy.
* CoolTeacher: Princess Celestia was this to Twilight Sparkle before she graduated.
* CoolBigSis: Princess Luna to Celestia.
* TheCorruption: Represented by thorns in Celestia's dreamworld.
** Luna fell to it in the past, an event that Celestia cannot stop dreaming about.
** [[spoiler: While exploring Celestia's MentalWorld, Luna accidentally pushes her sister into her SuperpoweredEvilSide, causing the thorns of TheCorruption to wrap around her and plunge into her.]]
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Subverted, it’s actually flailing, messy and it’s implied Celestia actually wakes up independently of Twilight’s rather pathetic attempts.
* CrushBlush: Twilight, frequently.
* CuteBookworm: Twilight Sparkle
* DarkAndTroubledPast: The Princesses had one. It still haunts Celestia.
* DivineDate: It is a romance fan fiction between a god empress Alicorn and a powerful but mortal unicorn.
* DreamingOfThingsToCome: Princess Celestia's graden dream could mean many things and is given different meanings by different characters.
* DreamSequence: Princess Celestia's garden dream in chapter 3. It also includes DreamingOfThingsToCome (maybe) and a whole lot of Symbolism.
* DreamWalker: As expected of the Alicorn of the Night, Princess Luna is able to explore and manipulate others' dreams.
* DudeShesLikeInAComa: [[spoiler:Much of Twilight’s angst comes from this (along with general PTSD and guilt over blowing her up in the first place), as her reaction to Celestia’s seemingly dead body is to kiss the Princess repeatedly. Not only is it a lot more icky than any ‘true loves kiss’ (as Celestia is covered in blood at the time), Twilight later convinces herself that it was some sort of rape and she’s an awful pony for doing it.]]
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Twilight finally confesses her love to Princess Celestia after the latter had been blown up in her experiment.
* EmpathicEnvironment: Princess Celestia's MentalWorld's environment conforms to her mental state at the time. [[spoiler: Thus when she is accidentally pushed into depression and a mental breakdown by Luna, the MentalWorld starts attacking Luna and collapses.]]
* EmperorScientist: Though she doesn't seem to have much time for it anymore and is somewhat unfamiliar with a modern lab setup, Celestia is mentioned to have been quite the scholar and scientist in her younger days. When she attends Twilight’s first test of her new theories she has to resist the urge to make suggestions unless asked, reminding herself that this is Twilight’s project.
* EnvironmentalSymbolism: Princess Celestia's MentalWorld symbolizes her mental state, and so the environment changes to conform to and symbolize aspects of her current thoughts. Also, in her garden dream, the plains represent life and the horizon represents death. There is much more symbolism in that dream than is possible to detail here.
* ExplosiveInstrumentation: Twilight Sparkle's experimental apparatus. To be fair, though, it was subjected to two orders of magnitude more energy than was expected.
* FantasticScience: The scientific system of Equestria revolves around studying magic. Twilight Sparkle's ground-breaking thesis is about the amplifying effect friendship has on magic.
* FirstLove: Twilight has loved Celestia ever since she saw her at the Summer Sun Celebration back when she was a filly, and has carried a torch for her ever since.
* FlashbackNightmare: Princess Celestia keeps dreaming of the moment her sister turned evil and tried to kill her.
* TheFourLoves: Celestia and Luna disagree on what Celestia feels for Twilight Sparkle. Celestia insists that it is Phileo, Luna is sure that it is Eros.
* GaussianGirl: When Twilight Sparkle casts an illusion spell on Princess Celestia to hide her burns, it shows as Twilight Sparkle sees her. The effect is equivalent to a Gaussian blur.
* God Empress: The perception of Celestia as this is the source of much of her problems. She realizes from the horror shown to the very concept of her being injured that she IS her subjects state, religion and piece of mind, and that the idea of her being mortal and fallible terrifies them.
* GoingCritical: Twilight's experiment, which is the magical equivalent of a nuclear reactor, does this just before it explodes.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Twilight Sparkle attempt to create a method to generate energy from the Elements Of Harmony. She succeeds and generates so much energy that the experimental apparatus overloads and explodes.
* GoneHorriblyWrong:
* GreenEyedMonster: Princess Luna seems to be very susceptible to this, even after her SuperpoweredEvilSide was destroyed. She becomes jealous of Twilight Sparkle's relationship with her sister, fearing that the unicorn was taking her spot in Celestia's heart. She got better after she realized that Celestia's love for Twilight was not platonic.
* GuiltComplex: Twilight Sparkle seems susceptible to these.
* HeldGaze: Lampshaded, as Celestia tries this with Twilight simply because she heard it in a poem once, and figured she should see if it's really as romantic as they say.
* The High Princess: Princess Celestia forced herself into this role. Her almost compulsive efforts at image maintenance (Symbolism symbolized by a WhiteMaskOfDoom in the dreamworld), the emotional effects of her subjects seeing her as anything less than perfect, and the emotional repression that she does to make this possible are the core sources of conflict in the story.
* HotScientist: The other researchers certainly have this opinion of Twilight Sparkle.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Twilight has this sort of reaction when she thinks Celestia had died trying to prevent her experiment from cascading.
* HowWeGotHere: Sort of. There is a brief prelude, then it skips to the hospital. The story then proceeds from there, with frequent flashbacks to the missing segment of time.
* ICanStillFight: One serious early complication of Celestia's head injury is her recurring belief that she's been attacked, and her attempts to fight back. Her reaction to Twilight Sparkle trying to get her some much needed medical help is to try and kill her in her disorientation, which apart from delaying her treatment was very likely to cause her further injury.
* InMediasRes
* InstantMysteryJustDeleteScene: The story skips from the morning before Twilight arrives to Celestia lying wounded in a hospital room after the explosion. Much of the plot involves Princess Celestia trying to figure out what exactly happened in between.
* InvisibleParents: Twilight Sparkle's family is conspicuously absent.
* JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind: Celestia and Luna embark on a trip though Celestia's MentalWorld in an effort to discover what happened during Twilight's catastrophic experiment. It does not end well.
* JustThinkOfThePotential: Twilight Sparkle is attempting to convert the power generated by the Elements of Harmony, magical crystals capable of defeating gods, into energy usable to power appliances like lamps.
** spoiler:Celestia sees even more potential, realizing that it is the same energy that provides her powers and immortality. Her first thought is the possibility of using it on Twilight, chronologically the earliest hint that Celestia's feelings are far stronger than she's letting on.
* TheKingdom: Except ruled by Princesses
* LaserGuidedAmnesia:
** Princess Celestia wakes up in the hospital with bad burns, an inability to use magic, and no memory of anything after her sister visiting her room that morning, including what happened in Twilight Sparkle's disastrous experiment. Thanks in part to her DarkAndTroubledPast and AnxietyDreams about nightmare Moon returning, Celestia assumes that her sister turned evil again and attacked her. This both illustrates Princess Celestia' love for Twilight, as she immediately sets out to find her and causes the Princess great guilt for mistrusting her sister when she finds out what really happened.
** The Princess later has a minor freak-out the night after her accident when she wakes up next to Twilight Sparkle and does not remember what happened the entire day before, meaning that the amnesia extended to both before and after the explosion.
* LongingLook: Celestia and Twilight Sparkle both have their share of them, especially Twilight.
* LoveAllegory: One possible interpretation of Princess Celestia's prophetic dream.
* LoverAndBeloved: The story is slowly heading this way.
* LoveHurts: Through convoluted logic and a healthy smattering of guilt for the explosion that hurt Princess Celestia, Twilight Sparkle convinces herself that being in love with Princess Celestia is an extraordinarily cruel act of manipulative treachery. She reacts accordingly. Celestia on the other hand feels love is something she cannot entertain, as her role as Princess precludes any such selfishness and any relationship she has is tainted by power imbalances.
* TheMatchmaker: Luna .
* MadeOfIron: Ponies are normally tough, but holy wow Celestia. Her injuries from the accident seem pretty bad, but when the true extent of it becomes clear it’s easy to see why people are so surprised that she didn't instantly become chunky salsa. Later it backfires, as her metabolism is just too tough for sedation and pain killers to work properly.
* ManipulativeBastard: Luna thinks Celestia's this, and though she has good intentions it's easy to see why.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: An immortal Alicorn and a powerful but mortal unicorn
* Matriarchy: Although the world is generally pretty gender equal, the two rulers of Equestria are both female.
* MentalWorld: Chapter 7 is dedicated to exploring Celestia's with the effects of both uncovering what happened at the accident and .
* MentorArchetype: Celestia.
* MonumentalView: Princess Celestia's room has one. She can see the entire princessdom, including Ponyville.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Subverted. Princess Luna She actually gives her a version of this speech in which she asks Twilight not to steal her sister away from her and displays the occasional bout of jealousy, but is eventually thrilled to realize that her sister really does loves Twilight Sparkle and fights to get them together.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: According to Varanus, Celestia would have been able to work out her problems and would have been able to enter a relationship with Twilight in due time. Luna forcing the issue causes everything to go horribly wrong.
* NighInvulnerable: Princess Celestia survived being blown up with only a concussion, LaserGuidedAmnesia, a burn, and a gash near her horn.
* NightmareSequence: Princess Celestia's dreams about Nightmare Moon.
* NoAntagonist:
* NotHimself: Although it has never been stated outright, it is implied by Twilight Sparkle and Princess Luna that Princess Celestia was acting extremely OutOfCharacter after being blown up, up to and including attacking both of them.
* NotSoStoic: [[spoiler: Luna attempts to force Celestia to show her true feelings about Twilight Sparkle. The results are not pretty. Do not force Celestia to ruin her composure. Ever.]]
* ObliviousToLove:
** Celestia slightly plays this, as she performs some pretty impressive mental acrobatics to convince herself that her love for Twilight is simple affection, and that Twilight's love is a simple childish crush.
** Twilight Sparkle believes her crush on Celestia is completely unrequited and is simply oblivious to the admiring gazes from many of her assistants, especially Peppermint Jam.
* OnlyMostlyDead: Princess Celestia after being blown up.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Twilight Sparkle is one of the most powerful unicorns to have ever existed and holds one of the Elements of Harmony, the most powerful magical artifacts to exist. She is a genius who is pioneering an entire new branch of magical theory, and her quick notes would be the equivalent of a doctoral dissertation for any other pony. Celestia is an immortal Alicorn god empress with control over the sun and wielded all six Elements of Harmony into battle before. No contest.
** Also a big part of Luna’s character. Though she’s empathic, kind, powerful, intelligent and regal, her subjects still consider her a poor second place to her sister and Celestia runs rings around her in any emotional confrontation. Luna’s search for self respect and her attempts to find the slightest flaw in her sister’s near perfect composure becomes the source of much of the fic's plot.
* PairTheSmartOnes: A genius who revolutionized magical theory with her discoveries and her teacher in a romantic entanglement.
* PerpetualSmiler: Celestia, though the story is hinting atdark overtones to this.
* PrecociousCrush: Twilight Sparkle had one on Princess Celestia since she was young. It lasted into adulthood and only intensified with time.
* PrincessesRule: Princesses Celestia and Luna
* TheProfessor: Twilight Sparkle is steadily moving in this direction.
* QueerRomance: The story is slowly but steadily heading this way.
* RealityIsUnrealistic: spoiler: Celestia’s sudden revival from death seems rather dramatic, but people can quite easily be unconscious with their eyes open and Twilight herself admits that she is too over-stressed and untrained to effectively determine whether Celestia had a pulse or not.
* ReadingsAreOffTheScale: Well, they were until Twilight's assistants adjusted the scale to measure in units two orders of magnitude higher.
* RedShirt: Although none of them die, Twilight's research assistants play this role.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Princesses Celestia and Luna were already old 1000 years ago.
* RenownedSelectiveMentor: Princess Celestia, a PoliticallyActivePrincess Alicorn with enough raw power to drag an enormous flaming ball of gas through the sky took Twilight Sparkle under her wing.
* SanitySlippage: The entire story has been a very subtle one for Princess Celestia, dropping Foreshadowing hints about her emotional instability and constant compulsive maintenance of her composure that are only noticed upon re-reading the entire fic.
* SealedEvilInACan: In Princess Luna's back story, she fell to her SuperPoweredEvilSide, Nightmare Moon, and waged war on her sister attempting to bring about eternal night. Eventually, Princess Celestia was forced to banish Luna to the moon. Although Luna got better, their past conflict continues to haunt Celestia.
* SexyMentor: Twilight thinks so of Celestia.
* ShiningCity: Canterlot
* SchizoTech: Mixed with a healthy dose of Fantastic Science. This world is developing their equivalent of the nuclear reactor and yet still relies on carriages and blimps for transportation.
* SiblingYinYang: Celestia represents the day while Luna represents the night. Luna is also the emotional and loud sibling compared to Celestia's quiet composure.
* SingleTargetSexuality: There is an implication that Celestia has never loved anyone romantically before Twilight.
* SleepCute: Princess Celestia and Twilight Sparkle. Even Luna can't help grinning.
* TheSmartGuy: Twilight Sparkle plays this role in the Elements of Harmony.
* SpearCarrier: Peppermint Jam
* SquishyWizard: The reason why Twilight Sparkle and her research team leave the lab building that contains their overloading experimental apparatus.
* StepfordSmiler: Celestia seems to be a mild Type A.
* TheStoic: Princess Celestia forced herself into this role after her sister's betrayal and never managed to break out of it. [[spoiler: Her stoic mask is so strong that breaking it releases her SuperpoweredEvilSide of repressed emotions.]]
* StopWorshippingMe : As normal Celestia has to throw a bit of this around, especially to Peppermint Jam and even to Twilight when she continues to call her Princess.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Both Princesses have one. Luna's was defeated years ago by the Elements of Harmony. [[spoiler: Celestia's is accidentally triggered by Luna telling her to give up her precious composure and admit her feelings for Twilight while in Celestia's dreamworld, which is affected by the whims of her emotions. Ooops.]]
* SurpassedTheTeacher: Twilight is now a specialist who knows more about the magic of friendship than Celestia ever did, to the point that she is devising a system to generate power from Harmony.
* ThirdPersonFlashback: All of the memories in the fanfic play out this way.
* TeacherStudentRomance: Averted by placing the fic AfterTheEnd of the series, when Twilight is a full blown adult who has left Celestia's guidance.
* TeenGenius: Twilight was one.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: Princess Celestia cannot remember what happened on the day of Twilight Sparkle's experiment because said experiment blew up, taking her with it. She only survived because she is MadeOfIron.
* TwiceShy: Celestia and Twilight Sparkle
* TheFogOfAges: During her dream sequence Celestia is reminded that each of the colors in her hair is so she would never forget someone who was once important to her…and she can't remember any of their names.
* UnrequitedLoveLastsForever: It is implied that Twilight Sparkle has been in love with Princess Celestia for several years now.
* YouWakeUpInARoom: Princess Celestia wakes up in a hospital room after Twilight Sparkle's experiment explodes. Thanks to her TraumaInducedAmnesia, her last memory is her sister entering her room that morning, she is badly burned, and using magic is painful due to a horn injury. She assumes the worst, that her sister turned into Nightmare Moon again and attacked her, and immediately flees the room looking for Twilight Sparkle. It is one of the earliest indications of her love for the unicorn.
* YuriGenre: Obviously
* WhatTheHellHero: Celestia decides early on that she cannot romance Twilight Sparkle, but her interactions with the mare are so flirtatious that even Twilight is forced to wonder if she’s doing it on purpose. Luna quite rightly calls her out on this.
* WebcomicTime: The story has so far taken up two days and three nights. The writing of the story has taken over a year.
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: Princess Celestia's SuperpoweredEvilSide sports one. It looks exactly like her face with her usual serene smile over her face, except that you can see her eyes through the eye-holes and they are red and tired. The mask cracks when the SuperpoweredEvilSide is released. The mask represents Celestia's composure. All her emotions were buried underneath it and have resulted in a monster.
* WizardingSchool: Princess Celestia's Academy for Gifted Unicorns
* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: Princess Celestia spent over 1000 years manufacturing her mask. It is so strong that it hides her love of Twilight Sparkle from herself and that [[spoiler: breaking it in the dreamworld releases her SuperpoweredEvilSide and a barrage of weaponized repressed emotions and memories]]. It gets to StepfordSmiler levels.
